Making movies or a television series is hard, you have long days, and if you have to film at night, really long nights. In every movie set there are differences of opinions or differences of direction and this can become very grueling if cast members are not on the same page.
In the movies/TV Shows we are about to highlight, these co-stars for whatever reason just did not work well together. Be it for a co-star not acting professionally, not taking the role seriously, or let’s face it… some actors can be real primadonnas. Here are 25 co-stars that just did not get along off screen.
25. Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford
While filming the 1997 thriller, The Devil’s Own, Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt had differences of opinion on set, and Pitt himself was not too happy that the script he had agreed to do was drastically changed before shooting. In later interviews both actors have expressed admiration for one and other but when it comes to the Devil’s Own, both chalk it up to a bad experience.
24. Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp
It’s kind of shocking that two such seasoned and great actors such as Jolie and Depp did not work well together but that was the case in the 2010 movie The Tourist. For whatever reason Jolie and Depp did not have much chemistry during filming, according to some sources Jolie was unhappy that Depp did not get in better shape for the role and that he did not want to cut his hair.
23. Christopher Reeve and Marlon Brando
The original Superman was a classic, everything went right on the film, the timing, the casting, the music. It broke new ground and put Christopher Reeve and director Richard Donner on the map. What many don’t know is that Christopher Reeve was not too thrilled by some of Marlon Brando’s antics. Brando, who was paid a $2 million dollar salary for two weeks’ worth of work, at first did not want to be on set for his part, he did not memorize any of the lines, and according to Reeve milked it in as much as he could to “just get the 2 million and run.”
22. Robert Downey Jr. and Terrence Howard
In the first Iron Man it’s hard to remember that Terrence Howard was the original War Machine. While the Iron Man film series went on to be phenomenally successful, Howard was the odd man out. According to sources he was very hard to work with on set, and Marvel and director Jon Favreau were not all too happy with his performance, his character was recast in all future Marvel projects. The official response was Howard’s salary, the unofficial version is Downey himself pushed Howard out.
21. Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn
Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn starred in an unfunny movie called Four Christmases. According to reports Witherspoon, known for her serious take on every role, wanted to rehearse, while Vaughn was more into improvisation of many of the scenes. Neither approach worked as the film was a snooze fest. There were also reports that Vaughn would go out often and looking the worse for wear, which Witherspoon found unacceptable.
20. Will Smith and Janet Hubert
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was a huge hit and was a showcase of what would become the great career of Will Smith. Still there were tensions on set as Janet Hubert, Aunt Vivian, saw Will Smith as an egomaniac and things finally came to a halt in season 4 as Hubert’s role was recast. In future interviews Smith has stated that Hubert was a veteran actress who may not have taken to the idea of putting a show on a new face with little acting experience.
19. Bill Murray and Lucy Liu
Bill Murray and Lucy Liu just did not hit it off in the first Charlie’s Angels, with rumors of Murray criticizing Liu’s acting. Liu is said to have become infuriated with Murray and they had a major on set argument. When the sequel came around Murray did not return as he was replaced by Bernie Mac.
18. Michael Bay and Megan Fox
Shooting a Michael Bay movie is always difficult, a director known for just blowing things up rather than a coherent story. Fox was fired after filming 2 Transformers movies when she talked about Bay’s personality on set: “He wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is. So, he’s a nightmare to work for but when you get him away from set, and he’s not in director mode, I kind of really enjoy his personality because he’s so awkward, so hopelessly awkward.” Truth be told Fox’s star power was rising at the time and there were rumors that she was not too happy being nothing more than eye candy in the movies.
17. Alan Ritchson and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series
Alan Ritchson, who played Raphael, gave a surprising interview where he trashed the entire production staff of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies he was a part of. According to to Ritchson, the Ninja Turtle actors were in a contract limbo, working more hours than they should, there were many promises made regarding notoriety that were never delivered, and even complaining that when shooting for the day finished, the actors playing the Turtles did not even have a ride home.
16. America Ferrera and Lindsay Lohan
Ugly Betty has been adapted so many times we lost count, but ABC had its own version of the famed Colombian soap opera. When troubled actress Lindsay Lohan guest starred on the show it was reported that Ferrera, the show’s star, and Lohan just did not get along. Ferrera felt that Lohan was outshining her and Ferrera even wanted to have Lohan’s character arc cut short.
15. Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder
During the filming of Dracula it was rumored that the films two main stars Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder were not seeing eye to eye on many things. The crazy thing was that during rehearsals they two stars seemed to have gotten along, but when it came time to filming the movie that had drastically changed. Ryder has since come forward and has mentioned in several interviews that she was not treated right by Francis Ford Coppola, which Coppola has denied.
14. Charlie Sheen and Selma Blair
Let’s face it, Charlie Sheen, as the years have gone by is a creep. Blair was fired from the series she co-starred in Anger Management because she complained about Sheen’s “work ethic”. Sheen, who did not take any notes from the series he was filming, sent Blair a series of text messages where he used offensive language before firing her.
13. Ed O'Neill and Amanda Bearse
Married with Children broke so much ground and became a hit in the early days of Fox. Still the series which basically ran tension free had one main issue, Ed O’Neill and Amanda Bearse did not get along much as the show ran its course. Bearse who took on directing duties found O’Neill hard to work with and after some personal issues arised on set O’Neill made it known that he could have Bearse fired if he wanted to. Aside from some bad blood both Bearse and O’Neill finished the series together.
12. Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy
According to reports while filming Lawless in 2012, LaBeouf and Hardy actually came to blows on set after Hardy confronted LaBeouf for coming to the set drunk. According to Hardy himself, LaBeouf was able to knock him out because he was so drunk.
11. Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth
Beverly Hills 90210 was a teen sensation in the early 90s. On set things were just as dramatic as on the screen. Co-stars Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth just hated each other, in reality, the entire cast got tired of Shannen Doherty, who had become increasingly difficult to work with and she was written out of the show after season 4.
10. Shannen Doherty and Alyssa Milano
Shannen Doherty seemed to not have learned from that experience on 90210 as years later on Charmed she had issues with Alyssa Milano. Doherty complained that Milano brought too much drama to the set and did not focus on the work. Since then, the two stars have become friends, but at the time they loathed each other.
9. Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte
In the 1994 film I Love Trouble, Roberts and Nolte did not get along at all. Roberts hated Nolte’s macho attitude. So much so that Roberts would say things to Nolte that resulted in arguments on set. It is rumored that they hated each other so much that many scenes were shot with stand ins.
8. Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio
While filming the modern-day version of Romeo + Juliet, Danes and DiCaprio just did not get along. According to reports DiCaprio was acting a bit like a prankster and this annoyed Danes. DiCaprio on the other hand saw Danes as being too “uptight”.
7. Jerry Lawler and Jim Carrey
While filming Man on the Moon, Jim Carrey stayed in character during the whole production, something that annoyed the production staff and Jerry Lawler, the real-life professional wrestler who actually wrestled and was friends with Andy Kaufman. According to Lawler, Carrey wanted to take a piledriver, just like Kaufman did, but the insurance bond on the actor was so high that the stunt could not be performed. Lawler, afraid that he might be fired for spontaneously shooting a scene like that told the director, who then cut the day short and thus the scene could not be filmed. Carrey extremely angry had Lawler fired from the production. He was eventually hired back and today Carrey and Lawler have buried the hatchet.
6. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny
What!?? Yes, the two X-Files co-stars originally could not get along. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny would often argue about everything on set, mostly due to the fact that both actors believed the show would not last long. When the popularity of the show skyrocketed the actors found common ground and the rest is history.
5. Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro
On the set of Joker two incredible actors began to clash over rehearsing. De Niro wanted to do read-throughs of the script while Phoenix disliked said process and wanted to be more in the moment. The scene like the movie was amazing but still when you get two super heavy weights in a room, sometimes they clash.
4. Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze
On screen Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze sizzled with sensuality and sexiness. Off set they loathed each other. Swayze wrote in his memoirs that Grey would goof off on set and would get very moody. Many scenes were reshot due to Grey who did not look like she was having fun.
3. George Takei and William Shatner
Star Trek is a cultural icon of the United States and the world over. The popularity of the show spawned many series, books, and games. What might surprise fans was that George Takei and William Shatner were not the best ship mates. Takei claims that Shatner was very self-centered and egotistical; Shatner on the other hand said that Takei was just an unhappy person.
2. David O' Russell and Lily Tomlin
While filming the movie I Heart Huckabees director David O' Russell and actress Lily Tomlin went at each other. O' Russell, a director who has a history of abusing actors, went on a tirade on set trashing the set while yelling at Tomlin. The meltdown is a YouTube sensation and one of the most grotesque images of verbal abuse seen from Hollywood.
1. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams
The Notebook is one of those movies that either you love it, or you hate it. What people may not know is that the two stars could not stand each other on set. So much so that Gosling asked the director to bring a stand in to read McAdams lines. Crazy thing is that as the shooting progressed the two fell in love, can’t get any more Hollywood than that.
