4th of July, or Independence Day, has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but its traditions trace back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On 2 July 1776, the Continental Congress voted for independence, and the Declaration of Independence, drawn up by Thomas Jefferson, was approved two days later by delegates belonging to the 13 colonies.

From 1776 until this day, the birth of American freedom has been commemorated on July 4, with activities ranging from fireworks, parades, and concerts to simple family events and picnics. There are also additional public and private activities commemorating United States' history, government, and customs. The Independence Day is the National Day of the United States.

On 4 July 1777, in Philadelphia on the occasion of the first planned Independence Day, the practice of shooting fireworks off started. Following the War of 1812, when the United States confronted Great Britain again, the practice of patriotic celebration expanded even broader. The Fourth of July in 2021 falls on Sunday, July 4, 2021, with the federal holiday falling on Monday, July 5, 2021.
