Aaron Judge defended Anthony Volpe after the New York Yankees shortstop struggled during his first MLB appearance of the 2026 season.
New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge offered public support to Anthony Volpe after the young shortstop struggled in his first MLB appearance of the 2026 season during Wednesday’s 7-0 loss against the Baltimore Orioles, in which Max Fried couldn’t start.

Following the game, Judge encouraged Volpe to stay focused despite growing outside criticism surrounding his role and future with the organization. “Just take care of business,” Judge said about Volpe, according to Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media.

He also added, “There’s been a lot of questions, a lot of stuff going on with that, circling with the media, but the biggest thing is block out the noise. There’s going to be a lot of noise with it.”

Volpe finished the game 0-for-3 with a strikeout and also committed a late defensive error on a routine ground ball, a performance that only reinforced the idea that Anthony Volpe’s performance solidifies Jose Caballero’s role. The appearance marked his first MLB game since undergoing shoulder surgery last fall to repair a torn labrum.

Volpe facing growing pressure with Yankees

Volpe’s return comes during an uncertain period in his Yankees career after losing the starting shortstop role to Jose Caballero earlier in the season. The former top prospect was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre only because Caballero landed on the injured list with a fractured right middle finger.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone has reportedly indicated Caballero will regain the starting role once healthy, leaving Volpe’s long-term role unclear moving forward. The difficult return only intensified scrutiny surrounding the 25-year-old, who entered the season hoping to reestablish himself as an important piece of the Yankees’ future.

Judge continues backing Volpe publicly

Despite Volpe’s struggles, Judge made it clear that the organization still values the young infielder and believes he can contribute at the major league level. “Just go out there and play your game,” Judge added. “He’s a special part of this organization, a special player…so just block out the noise and just go do your job.”

The Yankees will now prepare for a three-game Subway Series against the New York Mets, giving Volpe another opportunity to regain confidence and potentially quiet some of the criticism surrounding his recent performances.

Munetaka Murakami tied Aaron Judge for the MLB home run lead while setting a Major League record during the Chicago White Sox loss to Seattle.
The Chicago White Sox continue to see the impact of Munetaka Murakami grow with every passing series, and Friday night brought another historic moment for the Japanese slugger. During a 12-8 loss to the Seattle Mariners, Murakami launched a first-inning home run that not only tied Aaron Judge, who recently reacted to Anthony Volpe demotion, for the Major League lead in homers, but also set a new MLB record in the process.

After the game, Murakami reflected on how the conversation around his game has changed since arriving in the majors. “In the first meeting, there were a lot of critical questions about me hitting the fastball and getting the velocity up,” Murakami said through interpreter Kenzo Yagi via MLB.com. “Now the results are coming to be, and I think the questions are coming differently at the moment. I want to ask you guys how I’m doing.”

The answer has become increasingly obvious across baseball. Murakami’s solo shot off Mariners starter Emerson Hancock gave him home runs in eight consecutive series openers, establishing a new Major League record. The blast also snapped a streak of five straight strikeouts while further cementing his role as the centerpiece of Chicago’s rebuilding project.

Murakami continues rewriting expectations in rookie season

Murakami’s latest homer traveled 380 feet to left field at 106.2 mph off the bat, according to Statcast. It marked the first opposite-field home run of his MLB career and pushed his season total into a tie with Judge atop the league leaderboard.

MUNETAKA MURAKAMI LEAVES THE YARD 😤

He ties the league lead with home run No. 15 😮 pic.twitter.com/jN5hIbf774
— MLB (@MLB) May 8, 2026

What has impressed the White Sox most is not simply the power production, but the consistency behind it. Murakami now has 15 home runs against 15 different pitchers, showing an ability to adjust against a wide variety of arms despite pitchers continuing to attack him differently throughout the season.

“During the season, there’s always good and bad, ups and downs,” Murakami said. “It doesn’t matter what the results are, but to prepare each day in the same routine and prepare myself for the game is most important.”

White Sox believe Murakami’s impact will continue growing

Chicago’s front office already views Murakami as one of the franchise’s foundational pieces moving forward. General manager Chris Getz revealed before Friday’s game that several MLB executives have congratulated the organization for signing the Japanese slugger, whose arrival has dramatically changed the perception of the team.

Getz also believes Murakami is still far from reaching his ceiling, especially as he continues adapting to how opposing pitchers are game-planning against him. His discipline, preparation, and work ethic have consistently stood out internally throughout the season.

For a White Sox team searching for long-term stability and star power, Murakami’s emergence has quickly become one of the most important developments of the season. And with his name now alongside Judge atop the home run leaderboard, the attention surrounding him will only continue to grow.

Aaron Judge reacted to the New York Yankees’ decision to demote Anthony Volpe as the team prioritizes performance amid a strong start.
The New York Yankees made a notable roster decision by optioning Anthony Volpe to Triple-A, a move that signals a shift in priorities as the club pushes to maximize its current performance. Veteran leader Aaron Judge addressed the decision, offering support for his teammate while acknowledging the team-first mentality behind the move.

“That was tough. Anthony’s my guy. I know he’s going to be more motivated than ever to come back here,” Judge said, according to SNY, while also reinforcing Volpe’s long-term importance. “…Anthony is a big piece of what we’re doing here… I’m excited to see him come back here.” His comments reflect both confidence in Volpe’s future and an understanding of the organization’s urgency.

The decision comes after years of backing Volpe as the franchise’s shortstop of the future, despite inconsistent offensive production. Now, with the Yankees competing at a 24-11 pace, the move suggests a growing emphasis on immediate results over long‑term projection.

Yankees reward Jose Caballero’s production amid lineup shift

With Volpe sidelined, Jose Caballero has taken advantage of the opportunity, delivering strong performances both offensively and defensively. His 2026 line — 119 AB, 16 R, 31 H, 4 HR, 13 RBI, 13 SB, a .261 average, .313 OBP and .725 OPS — underscores how impactful he has been. His .725 OPS, well above his career average, combined with his defensive reliability and baserunning impact, has helped stabilize the position.

Aaron Judge supports Anthony Volpe after the Yankees opt for a performance-driven roster decision. Vaughn Ridley/Getty Images

Judge emphasized the team’s mindset amid these decisions. “We’ve got a good ballclub… we’re fighting for our lives every single day. We’re trying to win every single ballgame,” he said. “So… we’re gonna do whatever’s best for the team. You appreciate that as a player.”

Volpe’s path back remains open despite temporary setback

Despite the demotion, the Yankees do not view this move as permanent. Volpe is expected to continue developing in Triple-A, with a return to the majors likely if his offensive production improves or roster needs shift.

Judge underscored Volpe’s value beyond the field. “He’s a big part of this clubhouse… he knows all of our swings… the guy is a student of the game,” he said. “We’re definitely missing him right now, but he’ll be back up here soon.”

The organization may also explore positional flexibility for Volpe, potentially increasing his chances of returning sooner. For now, the Yankees remain focused on maximizing their current roster while keeping the door open for one of their key young players to re-emerge.

Following another vintage performance, the New York Yankees’ captain Aaron Judge took a moment to weigh in on the organization's future, specifically addressing the rapid ascent of top prospect George Lombard Jr.
The New York Yankees are leaning on Aaron Judge to lead their latest charge toward a World Series title, but the captain is already looking toward the future of the franchise. While Judge handles business in the Bronx, 20-year-old infielder George Lombard Jr. is stealing headlines in the minor leagues, recently earning a high-profile promotion to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Yankees‘ captain didn’t hold back his praise for the former first-round pick. “He’s made some big adjustments over the past couple of years,” Judge told the media. “He’s going to play elite defense at third, short, wherever you put him. And at the plate, man, he’s using the whole field. He’s a great contact hitter, but he’s got some real juice behind it, too.“

Judge’s endorsement only fuels the fire for a potential MLB debut. While Lombard Jr. may still be a year away from a permanent role in the Bronx, the trust shown by the face of the franchise suggests the front office views him as a “when,” not an “if.”

As the Yankees navigate the 2026 season—which includes monitoring Gerrit Cole’s progress after his third rehab start Wednesday as he returns from 2025 Tommy John surgery—the focus on youth remains a priority. Manager Aaron Boone now has a blue-chip asset just one phone call away should the big league roster need an infusion of energy.

Rushing George Lombard Jr. to the big leagues would be a mistake.

Lombard is younger than Volpe when he made the Yankees in 2023, has hit worse than him in the minors, and hasn't even played in AAA yet.

He just needs a bit.

My Lombard piece for SI! https://t.co/tXhMmAckDm pic.twitter.com/lifndrnThe
— Joe Randazzo (@YankeeLibrarian) March 9, 2026

Cashman’s vision and the next wave

The hype surrounding Lombard Jr. isn’t new. Ahead of the 2026 season, General Manager Brian Cashman noted the infielder’s defensive versatility while emphasizing the need for his offensive game to mature. After Lombard slashed .312/.400/.571 in Double-A to start the year, it appears that development has arrived ahead of schedule.

Lombard Jr.’s 2026 breakout

Lombard’s credentials speak for themselves. After finding his power stroke in the Eastern League, he is now testing his mettle against Triple-A pitching. Here is a breakdown of his scorching 2026 campaign so far:

Metric

2026 Double-A Totals

Games Played

20

Batting Average

.312

On-Base Pct (OBP)

.400

Slugging Pct (SLG)

.571

OPS

.971

Home Runs

4

Doubles

8

Runs Batted In (RBI)

10

Stolen Bases

4

Runs Scored

18

The New York Yankees aim to preserve their strong record in the regular season despite the absence of Giancarlo Stanton, with Aaron Judge endorsing Jasson Dominguez as his replacement.
With captain Aaron Judge firing on all cylinders, the New York Yankees are looking to maintain their momentum despite a significant blow to the middle of the order. Giancarlo Stanton, who has struggled to find his rhythm through the first half of the campaign, is headed to the Injured List, opening the door for top prospect Jasson Dominguez to make his mark.

Judge didn’t mince words when asked about the promotion of the man nicknamed ‘The Martian.’ “He’s been raking in Triple-A,” Judge remarked. “I think he was definitely upset not making the team out of camp. I think he’s going to show up here ready to prove some people wrong and kind of send a message. I’m excited about it.”

While the Yankees await the return of key pieces like Anthony Volpe, Stanton faces a dual challenge: he must not only navigate his recovery but also address a slump that has seen his production dip well below expectations.

A roster in flux

The Yankees are also navigating a delicate situation with veteran Paul DeJong. Currently stashed in Triple-A, DeJong has reportedly issued an ultimatum regarding his contract status.

Jasson Dominguez needs more time in left. pic.twitter.com/GeKSR5kohK
— Yankeesource (@YankeeSource) April 24, 2026

For a front office focused on locking down a postseason berth, these internal roster battles are becoming a primary storyline as the regular season enters its final stretch.

What Dominguez brings to the Bronx

Dominguez offers manager Aaron Boone a level of tactical flexibility that Stanton—primarily a DH at this stage of his career—cannot. Dominguez can rotate between DH and the outfield, allowing Boone to rest veteran legs without losing a power bat.

Having already slotted in as the DH in the series opener against the Rangers, Dominguez allows the Yankees to bridge the gap left by Stanton without a significant drop-off in athleticism.

Fresh arms for the series finale

The youth movement isn’t limited to the batting order. Aaron Boone told Talkin’ Yanks that the club plans to call up Elmer Rodriguez from Triple-A. Rodriguez is slated to make his season debut in the series finale against Texas, providing a fresh arm for a pitching staff looking to close out the set on a high note.

Does order matter? NY Yankees’ Aaron Judge discusses his comfort level in the batting order

Aaron Judge continues to anchor the New York Yankees' offense as a primary catalyst, and the captain recently opened up about his comfort level within the team's batting order.
Aaron Judge remains the undisputed focal point of the New York Yankees‘ lineup. While the Bronx Bombers have endured a rocky start to the regular season, the Yankees’ captain has provided a steady offensive heartbeat. Recently, Judge was asked about his comfort level within the batting order and how the hitters ahead of him impact his approach.

“I just love having guys on in front of me. Especially if we’ve got Trent Grisham, Ben Rice, or Paul Goldschmidt getting on, there’s going to be some traffic out there,” Judge told reporters.

Judge’s power numbers have been elite, even as his batting average sits at a modest .232 through 22 games. In 82 at-bats, the slugger has already tallied nine home runs, 16 RBIs, and 18 runs scored, underscoring his vital role in the Yankees‘ run production.

His early-season surge has placed Judge on the verge of taking over the 2026 MLB home run leaderboard. However, individual brilliance hasn’t entirely translated to team success; despite a respectable 13-9 record, the Yankees continue to be plagued by defensive inconsistencies that have hampered their momentum.

Aaron Judge CRUSHES this ball 💪

It's his 90th career first-inning homer! pic.twitter.com/qoi7BULvu2
— MLB (@MLB) April 19, 2026

Does defensive positioning affect Judge’s production?

While Judge has seen time in a few different roles this season, he has returned primarily to his natural home in right field for the vast majority of his 22 starts. Managerial decisions have occasionally shifted him to the designated hitter spot, specifically during series against the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Angels to manage his workload.

After serving as the team’s primary center fielder in 2024, Judge has transitioned back to the corner in 2026. His appearances in center this year have been limited to late-inning defensive alignments, typically occurring when the Yankees burn their starting center fielder for a pinch hitter.

While the sample size for his defensive versatility remains small, his work in right field has been the constant. Currently, Judge ranks in the 43rd percentile for Fielding Run Value according to Statcast, a metric the Yankees hope to see climb as he settles further into the rhythm of the season.

Aaron Judge is slowly closing in on the top spot of the home run leaderboard. The 2026 season started a bit slowly for him, but he is now just a step away from taking over one of the most competitive races in all of MLB.
Aaron Judge hit his first home run on March 27, 2026, and bounced back quickly, going deep again the following day. He now sits at nine home runs on the season and is firmly in second place on the league’s home run leaderboard, currently led by Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros.

Alvarez holds a slim edge with 10 home runs and has been on a tear, homering in three consecutive games. That kind of streak is something Judge has not matched yet this season, though he has come close with back-to-back multi-game power stretches of his own. Alvarez also got off to a faster start overall, hitting three home runs back in March to open the year strong.

Judge’s most recent long ball came on April 19 against the Kansas City Royals, a game played as the Royals were dealing with internal tension involving Salvador Perez and manager Matt Quatraro. The New York Yankees took advantage of the situation, completing a sweep and improving to a 13-9 record.

No real threat at the top for Judge

Through just over 20 games in the 2026 MLB season, the home run leaderboard still looks wide open for Judge to take control. There is currently no clear, consistent challenger threatening his long-term push for the top spot.

Aaron Judge CRUSHES this ball 💪

It's his 90th career first-inning homer! pic.twitter.com/qoi7BULvu2
— MLB (@MLB) April 19, 2026

One of last year’s biggest power names, Cal Raleigh, who finished with 60 home runs in 2025 while Judge ended up fourth, has not been nearly as productive this season and no longer looks like a serious threat.

Another name on the list is Judge’s teammate Ben Rice, who has impressed early with eight home runs, tied for third alongside Munetaka Murakami and Jordan Walker of the St. Louis Cardinals. Rice is also hitting .338, making him one of the early breakout hitters of the season.

Interestingly, Judge is not currently leading any major batting category beyond home runs this early in the year. His strongest position is second place in homers, while he is also tied for fourth in total bases alongside three other players.

The New York Yankees topped the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday in a star-studded affair headlined by an MVP-caliber showdown between Aaron Judge and Mike Trout.
After the New York Yankees outlasted the Los Angeles Angels in an 11-10 slugfest on Monday, Aaron Judge couldn’t help but poke fun at his fellow superstar Mike Trout. The two perennial MVP contenders went toe-to-toe in a high-scoring affair that lived up to its billing.

“I was going to talk some smack to him after the one he hit all the way to the warning track and tell him to hit the weight room, but I didn’t get a chance to,” Judge joked with reporters. The lighthearted comment underscored the mutual respect in a rivalry featuring two of the game’s most decorated active players.

Judge turned in a massive performance, finishing with two home runs and three RBIs. However, Trout nearly upstaged him, matching the two-homer output while racking up five RBIs and three runs scored. While the Yankees secured the win, Trout arguably took the individual honors in this heavyweight head-to-head matchup.

The two clubs are set to square off again as the series continues, with the Angels looking to even the score behind Trout’s hot bat. Meanwhile, all eyes are on the Yankees’ Randal Grichuk; despite another hitless outing, the veteran outfielder received a vote of confidence from manager Aaron Boone as the team looks to get his bat on track.

Tale of the tape: Judge vs Trout in 2026

While their respective teams are hovering around the .500 mark early in the campaign (Yankees: 9-7; Angels: 8-9), both Judge and Trout remain the focal points of their lineups. Early-season jitters have kept their averages lower than usual, but the power numbers remain elite.

Here is how the two superstars stack up through the first 16 games of the regular season:

More fireworks in the Bronx?

This individual battle is far from over. With two games remaining in the set, both clubs are desperate to gain momentum and climb the standings in their respective divisions. After Monday’s offensive explosion, the expectation for high-octane baseball remains at an all-time high.

Fans and analysts alike will be glued to the box score to see which captain blinks first. As the rivalry continues to simmer, this series is quickly becoming a definitive early-season highlight for baseball purists.

Aaron Judge set the tone in the Bronx with a leadership message and a first-inning homer, guiding the New York Yankees to a home opener win over the Miami Marlins.
The New York Yankees kicked off their home schedule in style Friday night, with captain Aaron Judge sending a clear message about playing in the Bronx. Judge’s late-night directive of “Suits tomorrow” set the tone for the team ahead of the home opener at Yankee Stadium, ensuring everyone arrived crisp and prepared. The message carried over to the field, where Judge launched a first-inning home run to lead the Yankees to an 8-2 win over the Miami Marlins.

“There’s nothing like getting a chance to step into this box, in front of these fans,” Judge said according to MLB.com. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a game in April or a game in October. There’s no better spot.” The message extended beyond words, as Judge’s early home run demonstrated his commitment to leading by example.

Judge’s approach helped the Yankees seize control early. The team improved to 12-6 in home openers at the current Yankee Stadium, with timely hitting, aggressive base running, and disciplined play reinforcing the captain’s ethos — even on a night when league-wide storylines included Chase DeLauter leading MLB in home runs over Judge after just 4 games.

Setting the standard in the Bronx

Judge’s pregame message resonated throughout the lineup, emphasizing responsibility and focus in front of the home fans. The Yankees combined leadership and execution, with pitching staff holding the Marlins to two runs over 5 2/3 innings, highlighting how Judge’s mindset can elevate the entire team.

His leadership will be a cornerstone for the Yankees as they aim for a deep run this season.

In a surprising start, Chase DeLauter has opened the 2026 season as the home run leader, sitting ahead of Aaron Judge and other big names with twice as many long balls as the Yankees captain.
Chase DeLauter is doing everything right early this season, and in the recent series against the Seattle Mariners he delivered an impressive showing with four home runs. That performance has him sitting above Aaron Judge on the leaderboard after just the opening series of the year.

Judge, who also had a solid start with two home runs in the first three games, currently sits in sixth place on the MLB home run leaderboard, tied with several other players. It’s still early, and he has plenty of time to climb higher as the season progresses.

DeLauter’s hot start goes beyond the long ball. With five RBIs and a .353 batting average, he’s showing that the Cleveland Guardians could be in position to compete this season after taking three of four games from Seattle in the opening series.

Judge not leading any categories

After three games with the New York Yankees, Judge is not leading any major statistical category in 2026. The only areas where he ranks inside the top 10 are home runs and strikeouts, where he has seven, placing him seventh in that category.

Chase “Barry Bonds + Albert Pujols combined”DeLauter is not real

He literally just flicked a ball out the opposite way on a pitch that wasn’t even a strike against a Top 5 reliever in the game pic.twitter.com/vd3HPemAJf
— AT (@BaseballWRLD_) March 29, 2026

It hasn’t been a terrible start for Judge, though. He’s hitting just .154, well below DeLauter’s mark, but expectations remain high. Projections from Baseball Reference still have him finishing around a .302 average with at least 45 home runs this season.

What are the Guardians paying DeLauter?

DeLauter is currently playing under a one-year major league deal worth $3.75 million with Cleveland. It’s his first contract at the MLB level, and if he continues at this pace, he could be in line for a significantly bigger deal next season—though a potential lockout could complicate that timeline.

Captain Aaron Judge won his first ABS challenge, hit a two‑run homer, and explained how he plans to use the system strategically throughout the season for the New York Yankees.
Aaron Judge used the new Automatic Ball-Strike (ABS) system to his advantage on Friday as the Yankees beat the San Francisco Giants 3-0 at Oracle Park. In the sixth inning, Judge challenged a called strike against Robbie Ray and won. He then hit a two-run homer, giving New York the lead.

It’s a new part of the game,” Judge said according to MLB.com. “You’ve just got to get used to it. I’m a hitter. I’ve got to focus on hitting. I’m not going to try to challenge every single one I think is close, but if there’s a big spot where I think I’ve got a chance to flip the count, I’m going to do it.”

After Giants fans booed Judge on Opening Day, his next game brought a key moment: he challenged Ray’s 1‑0 slider, which ABS showed just missed the bottom of the zone, giving him a 2‑0 count. Seven pitches in, he crushed a 93 mph fastball 405 feet at 109 mph off the bat.

Giancarlo Stanton added a homer later in the inning. This was the 60th time Judge and Stanton have homered in the same game, and the Yankees are 53-7 in those contests.

Judge shows early-season advantage with ABS

Judge’s success shows how ABS can help hitters, especially those like him who often get strikes called on pitches outside the zone. From 2017 to 2025, Judge had more low strikes called against him than anyone else. His ability to adjust quickly to the new system gives him an early edge this season.

Yankees’ lineup delivers on both offense and pitching

The Yankees’ pitching and lineup clicked on Friday. Cam Schlittler and four relievers combined for a one-hit shutout, marking the first time in franchise history the team opened a season with back-to-back shutouts. With Judge and Stanton providing big hits, New York showed both power and smart play, starting the season on a strong note.
