A select group of players found themselves on the sport’s biggest stage again and again, turning postseason runs into defining chapters of their careers.
" title="NCAAF players with the most playoff appearances: Who holds the record in college football?" publication_id="BUS#/college-football/ncaaf-players-with-the-most-playoff-appearances">

College football playoff history has quickly become a measure of sustained excellence. Since its introduction, only a handful of programs have managed to turn regular-season success into repeat trips to the sport’s biggest stage.

Those appearances are rarely accidental. They reflect recruiting dominance, coaching stability and an ability to survive the sport’s narrowest margins year after year, even as the landscape around them constantly shifts.

As seasons stack up, patterns begin to emerge. Certain programs return again and again, shaping the playoff era and quietly separating themselves from the rest of the NCAAF world.

Which NCAA team has made the most playoff appearances?

Since the CFP began in 2014, Alabama has stood atop the leaderboard for playoff appearances, qualifying nine times through the 2025 season — more than any other program. They missed the field in 2019, 2022 and 2024, but otherwise have been a fixture in the postseason.

That consistency has translated into both championship opportunities and titles: Crimson Tide owns three CFP national championships (2015-16, 2017-18 and 2020-21) and has appeared in six title games overall. Their overall CFP record is 9-5, reflecting a pattern of deep runs and high-stakes matchups.

The Alabama Crimson Tide team in 2022 (Source: Emilee Chinn/Getty Images)

That string of selections spans most of the playoff era, reflecting both sustained dominance in the SEC and a knack for keeping pace with college football’s evolving postseason landscape.

Close behind Alabama are a handful of perennial contenders. Clemson and Ohio State have each punched their ticket seven times, carving out rolodexes of memorable playoff moments over the last decade.

Their repeated entries underscore not just raw talent, but cultures of high expectations and week-in, week-out excellence. Programs like Georgia and Oklahoma also feature prominently, each with five appearances as they continue to shape the contours of the narrative.

What these figures reveal isn’t just who’s been invited most often, but how the playoff has fostered modern rivalries and legacies. Consistent appearances have become a yardstick of elite status, with top programs using every opportunity to build lore, chase championships and cement their place in the playoff’s short yet storied history.

John Mateer’s Oklahoma Sooners couldn’t hold onto the lead against the Alabama Crimson Tide, bringing their College Football Playoff run to an end.
The Oklahoma Sooners’ dream of pulling off a big upset this NCAAF season came to an end. John Mateer and his teammates couldn’t hold onto the lead against the Alabama Crimson Tide, ultimately falling 34–24 at Gaylord Family–Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

From here on out, it’s a matter of regrouping for Brent Venables as he turns his focus to next season. The loss to the Tuscaloosa squad dropped OU to 0–5 all-time in CFP games—a thorn they’re eager to remove as soon as possible.

The question many are asking now is whether the Sooners’ project moving forward will feature John Mateer as the leader on the field, who still has one year of eligibility remaining.

“I really haven’t thought about it yet,” the redshirt junior said to the press after falling to Alabama. “I’m pretty sure I’ll take some time and weigh all the options, and we’ll see.”

What’s the situation with John Mateer?

Following their first-round playoff loss to Alabama, John Mateer faces a pivotal decision regarding his future with the Oklahoma Sooners. With one year of eligibility remaining, the redshirt junior must decide whether to return to Norman for another season or declare for the 2026 NFL Draft, where he is currently ranked as the No. 4 quarterback prospect by analyst Mel Kiper Jr. As the transfer portal opens on January 2, his choice will define the Sooners’ offseason and determine if he will lead the program into the 2026 campaign.

Mateer’s numbers this season at Oklahoma

During the 2025 season, John Mateer led the Oklahoma Sooners with solid overall numbers, recording 2,885 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He finished the campaign with a 66.5 QBR, showcasing his ability to manage the offense effectively despite facing elite SEC competition.

While his season ended with a tough first-round playoff loss to Alabama, these statistics highlight a productive debut year in Norman that has established him as a top prospect for the next level.

" title="Kalen DeBoer's net worth: How rich is the Alabama Crimson Tide head coach?" publication_id="BUS#/college-football/kalen-deboer-net-worth">

From small-town heroes to national icons, Alabama football has long been defined by those who turned Saturday afternoons into legend. Each era brought figures who carried the Tide’s weight, shaping both the game and the culture.

What started as grit on southern fields grew into a dynasty of unmatched dominance. Along the way, names etched in crimson became shorthand for excellence, their legacies stretching far beyond Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Generations of talent built more than a program, they built an identity. These players redefined positions to quiet leaders whose influence lingers and form the foundation of Alabama’s towering tradition in college football.

Don Hutson

Don Hutson (Source: AL)

In an era when football was dominated by ground attacks and tight formations in the 1930s, Don Hutson was an athletic marvel who literally invented the modern wide receiver position at Alabama. With the speed of a track star, his brilliance culminated in the 1935 Rose Bowl.

In that game, which clinched the 1934 National Championship, he captivated the nation with six catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns, earning him the title of “the greatest pass-catching speed merchant end” from West Coast writers. His performance not only secured a title but laid the foundation for the passing game, foreshadowing a revolution in offensive strategy that would take decades to fully realize.

Joe Namath

Joe Namath (Source: Encyclopedia of Alabama)

Before the white shoes and the swagger of “Broadway Joe” defined the NFL, Joe Namath was the quintessential Alabama quarterback, leading the Crimson Tide through a dominant 29−4 run under Bear Bryant from 1962 to 1964.

He brought a blend of big-city confidence and a powerful arm that was rare for the time, culminating in a National Championship in 1964. Although his career in Tuscaloosa was marked by both brilliance and the occasional injury, his impact transcended statistics.

He was the ultimate clutch performer and a celebrity playmaker who brought unparalleled star power to the quarterback position, forever elevating the profile of the Alabama program on the national stage.

Derrick Thomas

Derrick Thomas (Source: Alabama Athletics)

A ferocious and disruptive force, Derrick Thomas was the defensive nightmare of the late 1980s, becoming the gold standard for college pass rushers. As an outside linebacker, his speed and tenacity allowed him to shatter the line of scrimmage, setting an Alabama single-season record with an astonishing 27 sacks during his 1988 senior campaign.

That unparalleled dominance earned him the 1988 Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker and unanimous All-American honors. Upon leaving Tuscaloosa, he held the NCAA FBS career record with 52 sacks, a staggering figure that underscores his generational talent as an edge rusher and a testament to the aggressive defense that has always been a hallmark of the Crimson Tide dynasty.

DeVonta Smith

DeVonta Smith (Source: Sam Greenwood/Getty Images)

The “Slim Reaper” defied conventional wisdom about size and strength, carving out a legendary career that culminated in the ultimate individual prize for a receiver: the Heisman Trophy. DeVonta Smith‘s journey at Alabama was defined by clutch moments, from his game-winning catch as a freshman in the 2017 National Championship Game to his unstoppable senior season in 2020.

That year, he became the first wide receiver in 29 years to win the Heisman, leading the nation with 117 receptions, 1,856 receiving yards, and 23 touchdowns. He was an unguardable route runner and deep threat, who, despite his slight frame, delivered monumental production and secured two National Championships, proving that skill and elite separation trumped bulk.

John Hannah

John Hannah (Source: AL)

Widely regarded as the greatest offensive lineman in the history of football, John Hannah was the pillar of strength and intensity on Alabama’s offensive line from 1970 to 1972. Bear Bryant himself called him “The finest offensive lineman I’ve ever been around”.

His athletic prowess was not limited to the trenches; he was also an SEC champion wrestler and a record-holder in track and field, a unique multi-sport background that fueled his explosive technique.

He earned Consensus All-American honors in 1972 and captured the Jacobs Blocking Trophy. His unmatched drive and physical domination anchored the line and established the standard of excellence for which all Alabama blockers are measured.

Ozzie Newsome

Ozzie Newsome (Source: Encyclopedia of Alabama)

A versatile weapon who redefined the “end” position, Ozzie Newsome‘s impact was so profound that Bear Bryant once called him “the greatest end in Alabama history, and that includes Don Hutson”. As a four-year starter from 1974 to 1977, he was a relentless playmaker, finishing his college career with 102 receptions for 2,070 yards.

His stunning 20.3 yards per catch average stood as an SEC record for over two decades, showcasing his ability to turn routine catches into explosive gains. A Consensus All-American in 1977 and a two-time All-SEC selection, he was the catalyst for three SEC Championship teams, seamlessly transitioning from a dynamic receiver to a legendary foundational figure of the modern game.

Shaun Alexander

Shaun Alexander (Source: Elsa Hasch /Allsport)

Shaun Alexander was the powerful, versatile engine of Alabama’s backfield in the late 1990s, blending speed, vision, and touchdown production. His career in Tuscaloosa was highlighted by his All-American and SEC Player of the Year selection in 1999, but he made a singular statement earlier in his career by setting the Alabama single-game rushing record with a massive 291 yards—a mark that still stands today.

His legacy of elite production at the college level is literally honored annually, as the award given to the top freshman player in college football bears his name, underscoring his lasting importance to the sport’s history.

Bart Starr

Bart Starr (Source: Encyclopedia of Alabama)

The name Bart Starr is synonymous with five NFL championships, but the roots of his quiet, cerebral leadership were firmly planted at Alabama in the 1950s. A quarterback during a tumultuous, pre-dynasty period for the Tide (1952–1955), his time in college was not defined by championships, but rather by the sheer resilience and precision that would later make him a legend.

Though he didn’t receive All-American honors, he served as a foundation stone for the program, embodying the grit and toughness that Bear Bryant would demand from all his players, paving the way for the quarterback excellence that followed for generations.

Derrick Henry

Derrick Henry (Source: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

A physical outlier even among elite college running backs, Derrick Henry was a 250-pound freight train who shattered records and carried Alabama to a National Championship in 2015. His 2,219 rushing yards that season broke Herschel Walker’s long-standing SEC single-season record, while his 28 rushing touchdowns set a new conference mark.

His sheer dominance, particularly his historic 46-carry, 271-yard performance against Auburn, culminated in him becoming the second Alabama player to win the Heisman Trophy that year. He stands alone in football history as the only player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season at the high school, college, and professional levels.

Lee Roy Jordan

Lee Roy Jordan (Source: Encyclopedia of Alabama)

The spiritual and defensive leader of Bear Bryant’s first national championship team, Lee Roy Jordan set the tone for the relentless, physical defense that became the hallmark of the 1960s dynasty.

Playing center and linebacker, Jordan was the engine of a 1961 squad that went undefeated, allowing no opponent to score more than seven points in a single game.

His senior season was capped by a monumental performance in the 1963 Orange Bowl, where the unanimous All-American captain recorded a legendary 30 tackles in a 17−0 shutout victory over Oklahoma, cementing his status as one of the most dominant defenders in program history.

Cornelius Bennett

Cornelius Bennett (Source: Touchdown Alabama)

A three-time First-Team All-American, Cornelius Bennett was a prototype of the modern outside linebacker—fast, powerful, and utterly relentless against both the run and the pass. He was the anchor of Alabama’s defense in the mid-1980s and remains one of the most decorated defensive players the Tide has ever produced.

As a senior in 1986, he earned the Lombardi Award as the nation’s top lineman and finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting, a rarity for a defensive player. Selected second overall in the 1987 NFL Draft, his combination of elite athleticism and consistent production cemented his reputation as Alabama’s Player of the Decade for the 1980s.

Mark Ingram Jr.

Mark Ingram (Source: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Mark Ingram Jr. didn’t just win the Heisman Trophy in 2009; he reignited the Alabama dynasty. By claiming the award, Ingram became the first player in Crimson Tide history to win the Heisman, shattering a nearly eight-decade barrier and immediately establishing Alabama as a destination for the sport’s elite offensive talent.

The sophomore running back rushed for 1,658 yards that season and, critically, capped his historic run by earning Offensive MVP honors in the 2010 BCS National Championship Game, leading Alabama to their first national title in 17 years and serving as the crucial bridge between the program’s past glory and its unprecedented future under Nick Saban.

Tua Tagovailoa

Tua Tagovailoa (Source: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

The moment the current dynasty truly ascended is forever encapsulated by Tua Tagovailoa‘s 41-yard, game-winning touchdown pass in overtime of the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship—a play he executed as a true freshman reserve.

He quickly became the face of Alabama’s explosive, high-powered offense, and his 2018 season was arguably one of the most statistically efficient ever: he won both the Maxwell and Walter Camp awards, and his career passing efficiency rating of 199.4 remains an NCAA record.

Though his college career was shortened by injury, his unparalleled passing metrics and flair for the dramatic fundamentally changed the identity of the Crimson Tide offense, proving that Alabama could master both brute defense and elite aerial precision.

Julio Jones

Julio Jones (Source: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

A physical marvel who stepped onto the field and immediately elevated the Alabama offense, Julio Jones was the definitive alpha receiver during the earliest days of Nick Saban’s dynasty. Combining an NFL-ready 6′3″ frame with elite speed—developed through his high school state championships in the long and triple jumps—he was an instant star.

By the time he left Tuscaloosa, he ranked second in school history for career receptions and receiving yards, with his junior season culminating in First-Team All-SEC honors in 2010. His blend of size, hands, and game-breaking ability set a new ceiling for what a wide receiver could achieve in the program, quickly ushering in the modern era of high-powered Alabama passing games.

Amari Cooper

Amari Cooper (Source: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

The peak of receiving precision, Amari Cooper was a record-breaking machine whose junior season performance in 2014 is one of the most statistically dominant campaigns in Crimson Tide history. That year, he won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver, earning unanimous All-American status and finishing third in the Heisman voting.

He established himself as Alabama’s all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns, completely rewriting the program’s record book in just three seasons. His route-running artistry and electric speed turned him into the most prolific pass-catcher in the history of the legendary program.

Ken Stabler

Ken Stabler (Source: Sugar Bowl)

Nicknamed “Snake,” Ken Stabler was the embodiment of cool under pressure, a clutch quarterback who directed Alabama to a National Championship in 1965 and finished his college career as a First-Team All-American in 1967.

He is perhaps most famous for his “Run in the Mud” during the 1967 Iron Bowl, a slippery 53-yard scramble for a touchdown that showcased his improvisational genius and helped seal a famous victory.

While his professional career with the Oakland Raiders defined his legend, his daring play and unconventional style at Alabama gave the Bear Bryant program a dramatic, big-play dimension that helped secure its place in the game’s elite tier.

Dwight Stephenson

Dwight Stephenson (Source: Sports Illustrated)

Regarded by many in the NFL as the “best center to ever play,” Dwight Stephenson was the quiet, rock-solid centerpiece of Bear Bryant’s last great run of dominance. He anchored the offensive line for the Crimson Tide’s back-to-back National Championship teams in 1978 and 1979, leading the way through a remarkable 21-game winning streak.

A three-time All-SEC selection and All-American, his exceptional quickness and technique allowed him to consistently neutralize interior defensive lines. His tireless effort epitomized the selfless, winning mentality of the championship-era offensive line at Alabama.

Billy Neighbors

Billy Neighbors (Source: National Football Foundation)

A cornerstone of the offensive and defensive lines, Billy Neighbors was a true two-way star who captained the 1961 National Championship team—Bear Bryant’s first title at Alabama. He won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy in 1961 as the SEC’s most outstanding blocker and was named a unanimous All-American, leading an offense that powered an 11−0 season.

Crucially, he anchored a defense that only surrendered 25 points total during that perfect championship campaign, a stunning testament to the sheer physical control he helped instill on both sides of the ball for the emerging dynasty.

Chris Samuels

Chris Samuels (Source: Andy Lyons/Allsport)

Chris Samuels was the quintessential modern left tackle and arguably the most technically perfect offensive lineman to ever play for the Tide. A four-year starter, he famously never yielded a single sack in his 42 collegiate starts, an unbelievable measure of protection that cleared the way for running backs like Shaun Alexander.

In 1999, he was rightfully recognized as a unanimous All-American, winning both the Outland Trophy as the nation’s top interior lineman and the Jacobs Blocking Trophy. He provided the impenetrable foundation that allowed the late-90s Alabama offense to thrive.

DeMeco Ryans

DeMeco Ryans (Source: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

A quintessential Nick Saban-era defensive leader, DeMeco Ryans was the commanding inside linebacker and defensive quarterback for the Crimson Tide from 2002 to 2005. He was celebrated for his intelligence, ferocious tackling, and impeccable character, which earned him the prestigious Lott Trophy in 2005 for athletic excellence and off-the-field achievement.

That season, he was also named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and a unanimous All-American, leading Alabama to a dominant 10−2 record and a Cotton Bowl victory. His influence endures, as he transitioned his elite football mind into a top-tier NFL coaching career, a rare post-playing achievement for a Tide star.

Woodrow Lowe

Woodrow Lowe (Source: Alabama Sports Hall of Fame)

A true symbol of defensive consistency and durability, Woodrow Lowe was one of the greatest linebackers of the Bear Bryant era, achieving the rare feat of being a three-time First-Team All-American from 1973 to 1975.

Lowe, who helped guide Alabama to four consecutive SEC titles and the 1973 National Championship, set an Alabama single-season record with 134 tackles as a sophomore. His exceptional career tackles total of 315 remains one of the highest in school history, cementing his legacy as a relentless tackling machine and a pillar of the championship defense of the mid-1970s.

Najee Harris

Najee Harris (Source: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Najee Harris defined the do-it-all running back role for the peak of the Saban dynasty, combining rare size and power with the agility of a receiver. By the end of his career in 2020, he had become Alabama’s all-time leader in rushing yards, total scrimmage yards and total touchdowns.

He capped his senior year with the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s best running back, a unanimous All-American selection, and a second National Championship. His signature blend of highlight-reel hurdle runs and tireless production was the final, devastating piece of one of the greatest offenses in college football history.

Barrett Jones

Barrett Jones (Source: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Perhaps the most versatile and intellectually decorated player of the dynasty, Barrett Jones was the ultimate anchor of the offensive line, winning three BCS National Championships while starting at three different positions: right guard, left tackle, and center.

He is the only player in history to win both the Outland Trophy and the Rimington Trophy. Beyond his unanimous All-American status, he was a rare four-time Academic All-American, graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA and winning the prestigious William V. Campbell Trophy, showcasing unmatched excellence in athletics, academics, and community service.

Calvin Ridley

Calvin Ridley (Source: Sean Gardner/Getty Images)

Known for his smooth route running and breakaway speed, Calvin Ridley stepped in immediately following the departure of Amari Cooper to ensure the Alabama receiving corps remained elite. As a true freshman in 2015, he set the Crimson Tide single-season freshman record with 89 receptions and 1,045 yards.

He was a model of consistency, finishing his career ranked second in school history in receptions, a testament to his reliable hands and ability to create separation. He was a primary target and deep-threat presence on the 2015 and 2017 National Championship teams, consistently delivering explosive plays when the offense needed them most.

Johnny Musso

Johnny Musso (Source: Alabama Center)

Nicknamed the “Italian Stallion,” Johnny Musso was a running back icon for the Crimson Tide, leading the charge as Bear Bryant transitioned Alabama’s offense into the wishbone formation in the early 1970s. He was a two-time All-American and twice led the SEC in rushing, setting a school record with 2,741 career rushing yards that stood for 16 years.

He finished fourth in the 1971 Heisman Trophy voting and was celebrated as a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete, embodying the student-athlete ideal while serving as the rushing spearhead for the nascent phase of Bryant’s second championship dynasty.

In the sprawling saga of college football, a handful of programs have carved out legacies that stretch far beyond the scoreboard. These institutions have become synonymous with dominance, tradition, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

From the maize-and-blue mystique of Michigan to the southern swagger of Alabama, the sport’s most decorated teams have built empires on talent and a knack for rewriting history. Their stories are stitched into the fabric of Saturdays across America.

But greatness isn’t just measured in wins. It’s found in Heisman moments, packed stadiums, and decades of sustained brilliance. As the dust settles on another season, the numbers begin to speak—and some names echo louder than others.

25. Grambling State Tigers

Grambling State Tigers (Source: Football – Grambling State University Athletics)

Grambling State University, under the legendary coach Eddie Robinson, stands as a beacon of excellence in college football history. Robinson’s tenure from 1941 to 1997 resulted in 408 wins, 17 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships, and 9 Black College National Championships.

His influence extended beyond the field, producing over 80 NFL players, including Doug Williams, the first African American quarterback to win a Super Bowl. The Tigers’ rich tradition continues to inspire, with the Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium serving as a testament to their enduring legacy.

24. Clemson Tigers

Kelly Bryant, Deon Cain and D.J.
Clemson University‘s football program has ascended to national prominence, particularly under Coach Dabo Swinney. Swinney led the Tigers to national championships in 2016 and 2018, with the 2018 team often hailed as one of the greatest in college football history. Beyond championships, Clemson has secured multiple ACC titles and consistently produced NFL talent, solidifying its status as a powerhouse in the sport.

23. Boise State Broncos

Long snapper Daniel Cantrell #42 of the Boise State Broncos carries a flag in 2020.
Boise State University has defied expectations, emerging as a formidable force in college football. The Broncos have clinched 22 conference championships, including a national title in Division I-AA in 1980. Their 2007 Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma, featuring the iconic “Statue of Liberty” play, remains a highlight in college football lore. Boise State’s success is a testament to their resilience and strategic prowess.

22. Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia Bulldogs players walk onto the field in 2005.
The University of Georgia‘s football program boasts a rich history, with four national championships to its name. The Bulldogs’ 1980 team, led by coach Vince Dooley and star running back Herschel Walker, remains a pinnacle of college football excellence. In recent years, Georgia has continued its dominance, securing additional national titles and maintaining a competitive edge in the SEC.

21. Florida Gators

Members of the Florida Gators celebrate their 31-20 win in 2008.
The University of Florida‘s football program has achieved significant success, with three national championships in 1996, 2006, and 2008. Under the guidance of coaches Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer, the Gators became a formidable force in college football. Florida’s consistent performance and ability to produce NFL-caliber talent have solidified its reputation as a premier program.

20. Auburn Tigers

The Alabama Crimson Tide, under the leadership of Kalen DeBoer, are entering a new era in college football — this time without Jalen Milroe as the team’s centerpiece.
As final preparations are made to kick off a new college football season, the Alabama Crimson Tide are entering a new chapter. With Jalen Milroe off to the NFL, Kalen DeBoer is now tasked with rebuilding the puzzle — and one candidate appears to have the edge in the race to take over the starting quarterback role.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="SEO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football/kalen-deboer-net-worth" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20241126_BUS_280498_Kalen-DeBoer.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="Kalen DeBoer, the Alabama Crimson Tide coach, has accumulated an impressive fortune throughout his career.
There was plenty of speculation about who would take over the starting quarterback role in Tuscaloosa after Milroe declared for the Draft. That gave head coach Kalen DeBoer time to carefully evaluate his options.

In a recent conversation with the media, DeBoer spoke about the healthy competition for one of the team’s most important positions. While he acknowledged the battle is still ongoing, he admitted that one name currently has a slight edge over the rest — Ty Simpson.

“You mentioned Ty Simpson. We’ve made it known that if we played a game at the end of this spring – even right now, because it really wouldn’t change – we would have Ty as our quarterback,” DeBoer said on ESPN Sioux Falls. “But they’re all competing for the spot. Ty’s been around now. He’s seen it, he’s competed and has all the tools. Just like these other guys, he has all the tools to go out there and get the job done.

Quarterback Ty Simpson #15 signs autographs during the Alabama Spring Game at Bryant Denny Stadium on April 12, 2025 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

“And he’s done a really nice job of improving and looking forward to this opportunity that he’s waited a long time for, because he could’ve gone to – not any other, but a lot of programs in the country that would’ve been looking for a quarterback and had an opportunity a year ago already. He … has done just a great job of leading us so far here through this offseason.”

Ty Simpson chooses to stay at Alabama

When many thought Ty Simpson might enter the Transfer Portal in search of more playing time elsewhere, the talented quarterback ultimately chose to bet on himself and stay at Alabama — ready to compete for a spot on Kalen DeBoer’s team.

“I’m not gonna sit here and say it wasn’t hard because there were some days, I feel like God wasn’t on my side and I didn’t really understand His plan,” Simpson said at the Manning Passing Academy. “But I prayed about it. At the end of the day, there wasn’t anywhere else where I wanted to play. I felt that God had put me in Tuscaloosa for a reason. I always felt like I could accomplish everything that I could – still to this day, with winning a national championship and being a first-round pick there at the University of Alabama.

“And I couldn’t leave my friends, my teammates. Some of my best friends who are going to be in my wedding one day are my teammates there at the University of Alabama. Seeing them on a different sideline, it didn’t feel right to me. With Coach [Nick] Saban’s guidance and the guys who are on the team and go to school there, there was nowhere else I would rather be than the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.”

Once again led by Kalen DeBoer, the Alabama Crimson Tide will look to return to national prominence in the upcoming NCAAF season.
Alabama Crimson Tide remains one of the premier programs in college football, though last season they fell short of showing their full potential. Looking ahead, head coach Kalen DeBoer is focused on building the most competitive roster possible — and avoiding serious injuries will be one of the key factors in achieving that goal.

Ryan Williams, one of the key pieces in Alabama’s offense, ended spring practice with a little bit of a ding. However, the experienced HC eased concerns among fans by making it clear that he expects to have his wide receiver back by the summer.

“Unfortunately, at the end of spring ball, he suffered a little bit of a ding,” DeBoer said to the press. “He’ll be fine. He’ll be ready to roll here this summer. But going back all the way to January, just kind of him understanding — even from last season — where he needed to get better. It’s being stronger. He’s just younger. The body maturing, and then him putting the work in — just being stronger, more durable, those types of things.”

Williams was one of Jalen Milroe’s top weapons last season in Tuscaloosa, which is why expectations are high for him heading into the upcoming campaign. His physical condition will be a crucial factor in his ability to deliver once again.

The importance of the wide receiver unit for DeBoer

Kalen DeBoer has yet to officially name his starting quarterback, although Ty Simpson appears to be the frontrunner for the job. Still, the head coach is well aware that whoever takes the reins under center will need to be surrounded by a dynamic and explosive group of receivers — a key element in DeBoer’s offensive vision for the upcoming season.

“They all are just out there competing,” the HC said. “I like the mindset that is developing. I say developing because I think it’s something I think we’re capable of, but we’re far from there yet is to be the best receiving corps in the country. That’s not just one or two guys or three. That’s the whole unit. Whoever goes out there, we’re developing more confidence they can get the job done.

The post-Jalen Milroe era has begun at Alabama Crimson Tide, and Kalen DeBoer will need to decide who will be his starting QB for the upcoming NCAAF season.
Kalen DeBoer has once again been tapped to lead the Alabama Crimson Tide from the sidelines in the NCAAF. The key question facing the veteran head coach now is who will step up as the successor to Jalen Milroe, who is now playing in the NFL.

While the coaching staff is currently weighing three potential options to take over as the starting quarterback in Week 1, Coach DeBoer has yet to name a definitive starter. However, he did praise the work put in by Ty Simpson.

“Ty continues to, I think, trend upward,” HC DeBoer said during the Tide’s post-spring press conference. “I think all of them have really added to their game. They’re all at different spots because Keelon’s learning the system. The other two know it better, for sure. And Ty has been around and just has done a nice job. I think the trending upward is a big piece of it. Ty is an accurate thrower.

“There’s always gonna be balls that every guy wants back, but I think the ability to learn from your mistakes, learn from other people’s mistakes, be able to comprehend, not be overwhelmed, I think that he’s just had more time. But they’re all doing a lot of really good things together as a group.”

Ty Simpson #15 of the Alabama Crimson Tide breaks loose for a long run during the second half against Chattanooga Mocs at Bryant-Denny Stadium on November 18, 2023 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

As of now, DeBoer and his staff have three candidates competing for the starting QB job at Bama when the season kicks off: Ty Simpson, freshman Keelon Russell, and Austin Mack.

The decision on the starting quarterback has yet to be made

While many anticipate that Ty Simpson could emerge as Alabama’s next starting quarterback thanks to his experience over three seasons in Tuscaloosa, Coach DeBoer confirmed that it’s still too early to make any final decisions on the matter.

“Now, I will say, we’re not where we need to be at the quarterback position yet,” DeBoer said. “And so I feel like that exists within our team, to have that level be accomplished, but this is part of the process. I shared with our team, we’re not where we need to be as a team. I hope we don’t ever think that.

“It’s never been that case everywhere I’ve been, any year I’ve been a part of to where you finish spring ball in April and you’re like, ‘OK, we’re good to go.’ People ask, ‘Are you ready for the season?’ No, I’m not. We’ve got a lot of work to do between now and August, and I think that’s the case, I think, with the quarterback position.”

Beneath college football’s brightest lights, Jalen Milroe is quickly making noise. The Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback isn’t just fast on his feet — he’s fast becoming one of the most intriguing young talents in the NCAA.

From Texas roots to Tuscaloosa fame, he brings the kind of size, speed and strength that scream dual-threat. His path hasn’t been flawless, but his highlight reel and growth under pressure speak volumes about his upside.

With Alabama entering a post-Bryce Young era, he stands at the heart of a new offensive identity. His age, frame and raw ability have turned heads, and his full story is just beginning to unfold…

How old is Jalen Milroe?

Jalen Milroe was born on December 13, 2002, which makes him 22 years old as of April 2025. A native of Katy, Texas, he has quickly risen from high school standout to the face of Alabama’s offense — a journey still gaining momentum.

Jalen Milroe #4 of the Alabama Crimson Tide warms up before the game against the Georgia Bulldogs at Bryant-Denny Stadium on September 28, 2024. (Source: Todd Kirkland/Getty Images)

How tall is Jalen Milroe?

At 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 m), Milroe brings the kind of physical presence coaches dream of in a dual-threat quarterback. His frame allows him to navigate pressure in the pocket while maintaining the explosiveness needed to escape and create.

What is Jalen Milroe’s weight?

Milroe weighs in at 225 pounds (102 kg), a solid build that complements his play style. Whether powering through defenders or absorbing contact on the move, his weight plays a key role in his durability and versatility on the field.

Who is Jalen Milroe’s coach?

Jalen Milroe is coached by Kalen DeBoer, who took over the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2024 after the retirement of college football icon Nick Saban. Together, they’ve redefined what Alabama football looks like in a post-Saban era.

DeBoer arrived in Tuscaloosa fresh off a historic run with the Washington Huskies, where he led the team to the national championship game. His offensive pedigree and quarterback-centric approach marked a bold shift for Alabama, one that seemed tailor-made for Milroe’s dynamic skill set.

Jalen Milroe #4 of the Alabama Crimson Tide warms up before the game against the Georgia Bulldogs at Bryant-Denny Stadium on September 28, 2024. (Source: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Replacing a legend is never easy, but he wasted no time installing a fast-paced, aggressive system built around playmaking. For Milroe, the transition offered new challenges and freedom. The QB who once relied mostly on raw athleticism began to evolve into a more complete field general under DeBoer’s mentorship.

Jalen Milroe’s career highlights

Led Alabama to the College Football Playoff in 2023: After a rocky start to the season, Milroe found his rhythm and helped guide the Crimson Tide to the SEC Championship and a CFP berth, proving he could carry the team on the biggest stage.

Finished sixth in Heisman Trophy voting in 2023: Competing against the nation’s best, Milroe’s breakout season earned him national recognition — a sign of how far he’d come since entering the program as a backup.

Threw for over 2,800 yards and ran for more than 500 yards: With 23 passing touchdowns and 12 rushing scores, Milroe demonstrated his dual-threat abilities, often turning broken plays into explosive gains with his legs.

Scored five total touchdowns in the Iron Bowl against Auburn: In one of college football’s fiercest rivalries, Milroe delivered a statement performance, solidifying his role as Alabama’s offensive leader.

Both Super Bowl champion with the Philadelphia Eagles, Jalen Hurts, and Jalen Milroe have been two of the best quarterbacks in recent memory for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Jalen Hurts and Jalen Milroe have undoubtedly been two of the top prospects to recently come out of Alabama Crimson Tide in College Football. Hurts’ talent is so remarkable that he led the Philadelphia Eagles to victory in the latest Super Bowl, an achievement that his counterpart, Milroe, hopes to replicate with his own upcoming NFL career.

In a recent interview with the press, the former starting quarterback under Kalen DeBoer shared his thoughts on his relationship with Jalen Hurts and the impact the QB has on each game he plays with his team in the league.

“What I take from him is seeing how right looks like. Throughout the whole period of time, with him keeping his head down, continues to grind, keep refining his skillset, and just keep elevating. To me, that’s important in itself, whether it’s on the field and off the field, you look at the impact he had off the field — people misinterpret that as well,” Milroe shared on NFL Live.

Milroe stood out last season at Alabama for his impressive running ability, in addition to having an outstanding statistical campaign. Now, all that remains to be seen is what the future holds for him once the upcoming NFL Draft kicks off.

How Hurts has inspired Milroe

Jalen Milroe has repeatedly expressed his admiration for Jalen Hurts, highlighting not only the respect he has for the Eagles’ quarterback, but also the close relationship the two share. Milroe, who led the Crimson Tide during the most recent college football season, has made it clear that he hopes to achieve at least a portion of what Hurts has accomplished in Philadelphia.

“As a player that aspires to go to the NFL, it’s always unique that each starting quarterback in the league does something right. They have a certain skill set and a certain presence about them that makes them a starting quarterback. And he’s definitely one of them.”

Ahead of the NFL Combine, former Las Vegas Raiders General Manager Mike Mayock delivered a bold reminder to the rest of the league about Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe.
Teams in the NFL are crossing down the days to the 2025 Draft, with the ever present hope of finding a generational talent with their selections. Ahead of the Combine, Las Vegas Raiders former General Manager Mike Mayock issued a strong message on Jalen Milroe, making something clear to the rest of the league about the Alabama Crimson Tide prospect.

Milroe is one of the most polarizing players in the 2025 draft class, as opinions on the Crimson Tide quarterback vary widely—from those who believe he is elite to those who doubt he can be a starter in the league.

Milroe’s main strength is his mobility and scrambling ability, which places heavy scrutiny on his passing mechanics. The Alabama alum isn’t the first dual-threat QB to be judged based on his rushing skills, and he certainly won’t be the last.

The NFL Combine provides an excellent environment for scouts to assess how high or low they are on Milroe and the rest of the quarterbacks in the 2025 class. However, former NFL executive Mike Mayock is confident in the Alabama talent, sending a clear message to the rest of the league.

“Jalen Milroe is the guy that has first round talent all over him,” Mayock said about Milroe, via The Rich Eisen podcast. “Strong, fast, big arm but had a bad year this year, too many question marks. I’d love to get him in the second or third round and have no pressure to play him, let him absorb it and learn from it.”

Milroe’s stats during 2024 season

Milroe’s redshirt junior season was a rollercoaster, with great highs but also too many concerning lows. Alabama’s year as a whole mirrored Milroe’s campaign, but as the quarterback—the most difficult position in sports—Milroe became the face of the team that failed to reach ten wins in a season for the first time in over 15 years.

Jalen Milroe #4 of the Alabama Crimson Tide celebrates the win after a game against the LSU Tigers at Tiger Stadium on November 09, 2024 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Alabama closed out the 2024 NCAA season with a disappointing loss to Michigan in the Reliaquest Bowl, a game Milroe would love to have another shot at.

However, he can’t change the past. When it was all said and done, Milroe finished his campaign—and his last college football season—throwing for 2,844 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. His rushing ability was the highlight of the year, as he racked up 726 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground.

Prior to the start of the 2025 NCAA season, Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer dropped a firm reminder to his players about the program's mindset.
Kalen DeBoer knows that expectations for his second season at the helm of the Alabama Crimson Tide football program will be much higher after a disappointing 2024 campaign. Ahead of spring training, DeBoer made one thing clear to the players about what’s at stake this year.

Alabama will kick off their 2025 NCAA season with a big matchup against the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee. That game will have an immediate impact on what is a do-or-die year for the Crimson Tide. After missing the playoffs in 2024, Alabama cannot afford to repeat that disappointment in DeBoer’s second season in Tuscaloosa.

With much buzz surrounding the Tide’s starting quarterback position after Jalen Milroe’s departure for the NFL, DeBoer will need to name his replacement and stick with his decision in what is shaping up to be a pivotal season.

Whether Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, or incoming freshman Keelon Russell start under center for the Crimson Tide, DeBoer sent everybody on the team a very firm message about the upcoming college football season.

Head coach Kalen DeBoer of the Alabama Crimson Tide walks onto the field after defeating the Auburn Tigers 28 – 14 at Bryant-Denny Stadium on November 30, 2024 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

“Other than we want to, we need to be that championship program,” Kalen DeBoer admitted during an interview on The Will Cain Show. “And that just means you got to prepare at a championship level. We’re a year into it now, and it just feels completely different.

“You know, a year ago at this time, we were trying to hire about three more coaches this week with spring ball starting less than two weeks from now. So we’re in a much better position. It really means nothing. It’s still about the work, but I like where we’re headed.”

Sensing the pressure

While DeBoer may try to distract himself and the team from it, the undeniable fact remains ever-present in Tuscaloosa: Nick Saban has set the bar to the highest of standards, and DeBoer’s Alabama must prove it can replicate at least some of the success Saban had in the Yellowhammer State.

“I’m just disappointed that we didn’t do what we needed to do to get in this last year,” DeBoer said. “And that’s what we’re focused on taking care of here in this off-season, is to make sure we do what we’re supposed to do to get in, no matter how many teams are in it.“
