Radko Gudas has decided to face the music for his actions as the Anaheim Ducks host the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Anaheim Ducks and Toronto Maple Leafs will go head to head for the first time since Radko Gudas‘ controversial hit ended Auston Matthews‘ 2025-26 NHL season. On the eve of a bad blood-filled showdown at Honda Center, the Czech defenseman is owning up for his actions. Gudas will play through an injury as the Leafs will surely be out for revenge.

“Stand behind my own mistakes. I want to address it myself,” Gudas admitted about his decision to play through injury and be active against the Maple Leafs, via The Athletic’s Jonas Siegel.

It’s not the first time Gudas has opened up about the aftermath of his knee-on-knee hit against Matthews. Gudas recently returned from his five-game suspension and admitted to feeling terrible about Matthews‘ Grade 3 MCL tear and quadriceps contusion in his right leg. Toronto’s captain is out for the remainder of the NHL season, and his timeline for the 2026–27 campaign remains up in the air.

However, this will be the first time Gudas and the Ducks face the Maple Leafs since their last meeting at Scotiabank Arena. Many players on the Buds revealed they wished they had jumped in and intervened after their captain went down with an injury. This time around, it feels like they won’t make the same mistake. Orange County may be stained red as the stage is now set for a bloodbath.

Auston Matthews is out for the season

The NHL is bracing for a grudge match

Though in opposite conferences in the NHL, there will be no shortage of vitriol when the Ducks and Maple Leafs take to the ice at Honda Center. Referees will have their hands full as Toronto will go after Gudas all night long.

Needless to say, neither Gudas nor the rest of the Ducks will serve as a training dummy for their uninvited guests. If the zebras don’t keep both teams at bay from the start, it will get ugly really quickly. Such is the anticipation around the league that president of the NHL’s Department of Player Safety, George Parros, will be in attendance in “The Heart of the City”.

Opposite presents for Ducks and Leafs

The Maple Leafs are essentially eliminated from playoff contention. Losing their captain for the remainder of the campaign only adds insult to injury, and this chance at revenge over the Ducks may be the only thing left for Toronto to look forward in its schedule.

Meanwhile, the Ducks are sitting on first place in the Pacific Division and are just inches away from clinching a playoff spot. As much as they want to hold their ground and fight back the incoming Leaf surge, the Ducks can’t lose sight of the bigger picture. The Ducks can’t afford to miss key players and receive suspensions.

However, they can’t put their players in harm’s way, either, as the Leafs may unleash their wrath. With Parros in attendance, the league may be looking to make an example of this showdown. Toronto can live with suspensions; Anaheim simply can’t. In more ways than one, the Ducks face a conflict of interest, whereas the Maple Leafs are on a mission to avenge Matthews.

As he makes his return to NHL action, Radko Gudas opened up on the controversial hit that ended Auston Matthews' season.
Radko Gudas is back from his five-game suspension in the 2025-26 NHL season. To no one’s surprise, it didn’t take long before the Anaheim Ducks‘ blueliner was asked about the knee-on-knee hit he delivered on Auston Matthews, and that has sidelined the Toronto Maple Leafs‘ captain for the remainder of the campaign.

“I really hate the way it ended up, the point of contact,” Gudas admitted, via Sportsnet. “I never want to injure anybody out there. I feel terrible about the outcome. I’ve got to learn. I’ve got to be better as a hockey player. It’s very unfortunate. I reached out to [Matthews], too. We spoke.”

Gudas’ reputation in the NHL has always centered around his aggressive playstyle. It’s no wonder he’s earned the nickname: “The Butcher”. However, the Ducks‘ blueliner has found himself in the eye of the storm recently due to two separate injuries to league icons, Sidney Crosby and Auston Matthews.

Gudas was involved in Crosby’s injury

During Team Canada’s quarterfinal matchup with Czechia at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Gudas finished a check on Crosby, who went down in pain. Contrary to Matthews’ injury, there wasn’t any sign of ill intent from Gudas.

Auston Matthews #34 of the Maple Leafs.

It was more of a freak accident. Crosby was stumbling, and his leg got caught awkwardly. When Gudas hit him high, the lower-body injury occurred. Canada lost its captain and Crosby went on to miss the semifinals, the final, and 11 games in the NHL.

As a result, fans both in the Great White North and the City of Bridges made a public outcry against Gudas. For Canadians in Toronto, that sentiment was only magnified after Gudas injured Matthews in a play that looked ugly from the start.

Gudas’ suspension history

Due to his style of play, Gudas has often found himself in the receiving end of supplementary discipline and sanctions. So far in his NHL career, the Department of Player Safety has suspended him five times. Indeed, the latest is his first in over seven years, but it’s yet another warning about the Czech enforcer’s reckless tendencies.

The NHL has fined Ducks forward Beckett Sennecke for embellishment after his second citation of the season, reinforcing the league’s enforcement of its diving policy.
The NHL has fined Beckett Sennecke of the Anaheim Ducks $2,000 for diving/embellishment, reinforcing the league’s effort to maintain discipline and integrity on the ice. The penalty comes as part of the league’s structured system to track and penalize repeated infractions.

NHL insider Frank Seravalli highlighted that this is Sennecke’s second citation under the league’s enforcement policy this season, noting that the fine aligns with the standard disciplinary measures applied in these cases.

Sennecke, who has appeared in 70 games during the 2025-26 season, recording 21 goals and 33 assists for 54 points. The fine, though financially minor, underscores the importance of discipline as the young forward continues to develop his NHL career.

NHL monitoring system and escalating discipline

The NHL Hockey Operations Department closely monitors every game, logging penalties and reviewing uncalled plays related to diving and embellishment. This system ensures consistency in enforcement and accountability across the league.

Beckett Sennecke #45 of the Ducks gets up slowly after a mid-ice hit. Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images

Sennecke’s first citation came after an incident against the St. Louis Blues on March 8, which resulted in a warning. His second offense, tied to a March 15 game against the Montreal Canadiens, led to the fine. On that play, Canadiens forward Josh Anderson was also penalized for holding, illustrating how embellishment often occurs alongside legitimate infractions.

What comes next for Sennecke and repeat offenders

With two citations already recorded, Sennecke now faces escalating consequences if additional violations occur. A third citation would result in a $3,000 fine, followed by $4,000 for a fourth and $5,000 for each subsequent offense.

For a young player, these measures serve as both deterrent and developmental checkpoint. The Ducks will expect Sennecke to adjust quickly, as maintaining discipline is critical not only for avoiding fines but also for sustaining credibility with officials and contributing effectively at the NHL level.

Toronto Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube criticized a “dirty play” after captain Auston Matthews leaves the game following a knee-on-knee hit from Anaheim Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas.
The Toronto Maple Leafs secured a 6–4 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night, but the result was overshadowed by a concerning injury to captain Auston Matthews.

The star forward exited the game after a hit from Radko Gudas, who had already injured Sidney Crosby, a play that quickly drew strong reactions from the Toronto bench.

The incident occurred during the second period when Gudas delivered the hit that forced Matthews off the ice. Officials assessed the Anaheim blueliner a major penalty and a game misconduct, allowing the Leafs to capitalize on a lengthy power play.

“That’s a dirty play,” head coach Craig Berube said after the game, according to TSN. “The league is obviously going to look at it and see what the suspension will be, or whatever happens.”

Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson reacted to the team’s shocking decision to trade longtime defenseman John Carlson ahead of the NHL trade deadline.
The Washington Capitals are still processing one of the most emotional moves of the NHL trade deadline after the organization dealt longtime defenseman John Carlson to the Anaheim Ducks. Veteran forward Tom Wilson acknowledged the impact of the decision on the locker room, as the surprising trade quickly sent shockwaves through the team and its fan base.

Carlson had been a cornerstone of the franchise for more than a decade, and the deal marked the end of an era in Washington. He was a key part of the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup championship and one of the organization’s most consistent leaders on and off the ice.

Speaking after practice, Wilson did not hide his emotions about the trade, delivering an honest message to the team while acknowledging the reality of the NHL business. “Today sucks. It’s brutal,” Wilson said. “I’m sure there are some guys that want to cry. That’s the reality of it. Today you can cry and tomorrow you got to wake up and be a big boy and play hockey. We have to do our job.”

Wilson reflects on long partnership with Carlson

Wilson and Carlson shared the ice for most of the winger’s NHL career. Wilson was selected by Washington in the 2012 draft and debuted during the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs, meaning nearly every game he has played at the NHL level included Carlson as a teammate.

Patrick Smith/Getty Images

Because of that history, Wilson admitted the change feels unfamiliar for many players inside the Capitals locker room. “It’s all I’ve ever known… There’s certain guys in the locker room that are just a north star a little bit,” Wilson said. “I never foresaw like a Capitals game without John Carlson in it.”

Capitals still focused on playoff push

Despite the emotional impact of the move, Washington’s season continues. The team remains in the playoff race in a tightly contested Eastern Conference, sitting just a few points outside a postseason position.

While the trade signals a significant shift for the organization, the Capitals will now rely on their remaining core to keep the team competitive down the stretch as they attempt to stay in the hunt for a playoff berth.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin didn't sugarcoat his feelings after learning John Carlson was traded to the Anaheim Ducks before the NHL trade deadline
The Washington Capitals continue to dismantle the team ahead of the NHL trade deadline, and Alex Ovechkin has had enough.
Watching Nic Dowd be traded to the Vegas Golden Knights sent a disheartening message to the players, but giving up Carlson to the Ducks was a massive blow that neither Ovechkin nor anyone else saw coming. Thanks to the trade, the Ducks added a Stanley Cup-winning defenseman while most of the league was asleep, including Carlson, who woke up to the news.

After hearing the news, Ovechkin dropped a blunt admission putting the front office on notice. “Alex Ovechkin said this is the saddest day of his career personally after John Carlson was traded,” as reported by NHL.com‘s Tom Gulitti. “Keep fighting. We’re still in this,” Ovechkin said to his teammates, via The Hockey News’ Sammi Silber.

Alex Ovechkin at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC.

Capitals on high alert

Ovechkin’s statement shouldn’t be overlooked by the organization. With much speculation around his future in the NHL, nothing can be taken for granted when it comes to “The Great 8”. Ovechkin has yet to sign a contract extension in Washington, as his five-year, $47.5 million deal (signed in 2021) is set to expire after the 2025-26 campaign.

If the Capitals miss the playoffs after separating Ovi from one of his longest-tenured teammates, the prospect of the leading scorer in NHL history leaving could become very real. Whether he would join another organization in the league or return to Russia remains to be seen, though he has admitted to plans for a return to Dynamo Moscow.

The Anaheim Ducks strengthen their roster by acquiring a Stanley Cup–winning defenseman from the Washington Capitals, adding experience and leadership ahead of the NHL trade deadline.
The Anaheim Ducks made a notable move ahead of the NHL trade deadline by acquiring veteran defenseman John Carlson from the Washington Capitals. The deal reflects Anaheim’s determination to strengthen its roster as the team pushes toward the postseason.

Carlson arrives with an impressive résumé that includes a Stanley Cup championship and more than a decade of experience in the league. The 36-year-old defenseman has continued to produce this season, recording 46 points while playing a major role on Washington’s blue line.

Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek expressed confidence in the impact Carlson can bring to the team during the final stretch of the season. “John Carlson brings leadership, character, a high hockey IQ and a presence to our lineup,” Verbeek said. according to NHL.com. “We are very excited to add a Stanley Cup winner to complement our group and make a big push down the stretch.”

Trade details and contract situation

In the trade, Anaheim sent a conditional first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft to Washington. If the Ducks fail to qualify for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, they will keep the 2026 pick and instead send their first-round selection in the 2027 draft.

John Carlson #74 of the Capitals skates with the puck. Patrick Smith/Getty Images

Carlson is currently in the final season of the eight-year, $64 million contract he signed with the Capitals in 2018. If a new deal is not reached before the offseason, the veteran defenseman could become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Carlson’s legacy in Washington

Selected by Washington in the first round of the 2008 NHL Draft, Carlson became one of the most accomplished defensemen in franchise history. He holds team records among defensemen in goals, assists, points, power-play points and games played.

He also played a key role in the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup championship, posting 20 points during that playoff run. Now, the Ducks hope his experience and leadership can help guide the team as it attempts to return to the postseason for the first time since the 2017–18 season.

As the Oilers return from the 2026 Winter Olympics with Connor McDavid at the center of attention, questions about his availability for tonight’s game against the Anaheim Ducks add intrigue to Edmonton’s NHL restart.
The spotlight on Connor McDavid has followed him from the 2026 Winter Olympics, where he starred for Canada men’s national ice hockey team, to the Edmonton Oilers’ schedule.

Questions started to swirl about his availability for tonight’s game against the Anaheim Ducks. After not being listed in the lineup sheets or seen in full practice since returning from international duty, there was uncertainty around whether the NHL’s reigning MVP would take the ice tonight.

Their early California swing takes on extra narrative weight with the hunt for crucial points underway. His status could quietly shape how the Oilers approach what promises to be a tightly contested Pacific Division showdown.

Is Connor McDavid playing tonight for the Oilers?

As the Edmonton Oilers prepare to face the Anaheim Ducks after the 2026 Winter Olympics break, Connor McDavid revealed he’s ready to suit up tonight. “Yup,” he answered when asked by Bob Stauffer whether he was good to go against the Ducks.

Connor McDavid of the Oilers celebrates a first-period goal in 2026 (Source: Leila Devlin/Getty Images)

McDavid, who captained Canada men’s national ice hockey team to the Olympic final and was among the tournament’s most productive players, was absent from the Oilers’ practice in Anaheim on Tuesday.

Head coach Kris Knoblauch has described the captain’s post-Olympic return as a slight delay rather than a full absence, easing concerns on his status. The coach is ultimately counting on the captain as the NHL season resumes.

Ahead of the Anaheim Ducks’ visit to the New York Rangers in the 2025-26 NHL season, Chris Kreider and Jacob Trouba voiced honest messages on their fresh starts.
Playing for the New York Rangers isn’t for everyone. Although Chris Kreider and Jacob Trouba did a phenomenal job in The Big Apple, they still appreciate the fresh scenery brought by their moves to the Anaheim Ducks.

Being an NHL player in New York City is a completely different experience than being one in Anaheim. Kreider and Trouba found out just that during the 2025-26 campaign. Both saw their time with the Broadway Blueshirts come to an abrupt end when being traded to the Ducks. Nobody expected Anaheim to compete this season, yet somehow someway, the Ducks are currently sitting in a playoff spot.

As the Ducks head East to take on the Rangers at the Madison Square Garden, Kreider and Trouba were asked about their NHL background. On that note, Kreider dropped a sincere admission on Trouba’s rebirthing in Orange County.

Kreider comments on Trouba

“Last year’s kind of a blur. The difference? [Trouba] doesn’t have the weight of the world on his shoulders,” Kreider stated on Trouba, via The Orange County Register. “It’s an incredibly hard thing to be the captain in that city. It’s an incredible honor. There’s a lot of responsibility that goes along with that. And I think being able to come out here and just play without worrying about some of those things might make it a little bit easier.”

Jacob Trouba playing for the New York Rangers

Since being traded to Anaheim on Dec. 6, 2024, Trouba has appeared in 85 games, registering 6 goals, 15 assists, and 21 points. His production has truly improved in the 2025-26 NHL campaign. Last season, the former Rangers’ captain was still being affected by the psychological factors behind such a sudden change. In the blink of an eye, Trouba went from being a captain in Manhattan to being the new guy in a locker room more than 2,700 miles away in Anaheim.

Trouba’s statement

Though Trouba never expected the organization he captained to ship him away in such a fashion, there were signs indicating a rift between the front office and the captain. Kreider’s trade came as bigger surprise.

“We’re having fun on the ice and smiling, I just think we’re a little more relaxed being out of the pressure or whatever you want to call it,” Jacob Trouba admitted about the former Rangers on the Ducks. “We’re just having a lot more fun.”

Despite boasting the third-most goals in Rangers history (326), Kreider was traded in the offseason with two seasons left on his seven-year, $45.5 million deal. Still, it wasn’t the worst thing in the world as Kreider joined former teammates Trouba and Frank Vatrano. Now, the chemistry is paying off, and the Ducks hope to prove it as they take on several familiar faces in New York City.

Chicago Blackhawks star Connor Bedard delivered a powerful message to the rest of the NHL after a candid encounter with the Anaheim Ducks.
Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks overcame a disastrous start to secure a key comeback win over the Anaheim Ducks. Several familiar faces reunited at the United Center when Ducks and Hawks went to battle, but there was no place for friendly chatter. Instead, the two sides treated fans to one heated showdown in the NHL season.

Two of the youngest rosters in the league provided one of the best games in the 2025-26 NHL season. During Joel Quenneville’s return to the Windy City, the Ducks came out of the tunnel looking shot out of a cannon. Anaheim scored twice in the opening minute, taking Bedard and company by surprise. The Ducks even took a 3-0 lead in the first period, but the Blackhawks never threw the towel, walking away with a 5-3 victory.

It wasn’t always pretty. More often than not, the game turned chippy, as stars on both sides of the ice went at it. Even Bedard got his hands dirty, as he starred a brief skirmish with Ducks forward Mason McTavish. After the game, Bedard didn’t stutter to put the rest of the league on notice. As skilled as he is, he isn’t afraid to stand up for himself when tempers flare and push comes to shove.

“It’s fun when games get feisty like that,” Bedard confessed during his postgame interview with Chicago Sports Network’s Darren Pang. Bedard sure proved he is up for the task when the tide gets rough, finishing the game with 4 points (2G, 2A). His magical 2025-26 NHL season continues, as the former first overall pick now registers 37 points (16G, 21A).

Bedard and McTavish went at it after the buzzer leading to a big scrum 😳 pic.twitter.com/aEdYb4LdPB
— B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) November 30, 2025

Bedard and McTavish go at it

Former teammates for Team Canada in the 2022 IIHF World Juniors, Bedard and McTavish sure seemed to have forgotten about their shared history during Chicago’s 5-3 victory. What started off as an argument—with slashes involved—at the faceoff slot led to a spat after the final horn went off at the United Center.

In between those two sequences, Bedard put the game away with an empty-net goal, which he celebrated by staring down the Ducks’ bench. Still, after the game, Bedard expressed nothing but praise for McTavish.

“Yeah, we are pretty close, actually. He is someone that always wants to compete. I was roommates with him. Everything we do, he’s trying to make it a competition,” Bedard commented on McTavish after the game. “I’ll probably go say hello to him right now. Such a great player. He’s a fun guy to play against.”

Blackhawks-Ducks could become a classic for years

Chicago and Anaheim boast the third- and seventh-youngest rosters in the NHL, respectively. With both sides taking massive strides this season, it’s easy to believe the Hawks and Ducks could spark a rivalry that lasts for years. Perhaps Sunday’s clash in the City of Big Shoulders will one day be remembered as the league’s first taste of an electric matchup between them.

Those who missed the meeting in Chicago will have another chance soon, as the Blackhawks visit the Ducks on December 7th, hoping to sweep the season series for the first time since the 2021-22 campaign.

Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan could make lineup changes as his team prepares to face the Pacific Division-leading Anaheim Ducks.
The Detroit Red Wings are preparing for a pivotal matchup against the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday, November 13th, at home, facing the top NHL team in the Pacific Division. After three consecutive home losses, the Red Wings are looking for ways to regain momentum and climb back up the Atlantic standings.

Coach Todd McLellan acknowledged the team’s struggles, noting that both the penalty kill and power play have underperformed, failing to generate consistent offensive pressure. Detroit has scored just two goals over its last three games, despite registering 45 shots against goaltender Arvid Soderblom on Sunday.

“You can see where we’re struggling,” McLellan said, according to RedWingsInsider.com. “A game ago, we got scored on once and it was a back-check and a sort out. That can’t happen. The first goal, we had a clearing opportunity with a two-on-one, and we didn’t get it out.”

Will McLellan revamp the Red Wings’ lineup?

McLellan hinted that adjustments could be on the horizon, aiming to improve both special teams and offensive production. “The third power-play goal, a walkout from below the goal line, we have the tools to take care of that and we just didn’t get it done. Much like our game right now where our power-play is scrambling, our penalty kill needs a polish up,” he said.

The Red Wings could see increased contributions from AHL call-ups, including top prospect Nate Danielson, who has been recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins. McLellan stressed ongoing discussions about how best to structure the lineup and deploy the team’s units.

Can the Red Wings find the spark they’ve been missing?

Detroit’s star forward Patrick Kane has yet to provide the offensive lift the team has needed in recent games. McLellan indicated that lineup adjustments could help create more scoring opportunities and maximize the roster’s talent. “There will be a lot of discussions over the next few days about what we do with the units,” McLellan added.

As the Red Wings prepare to host the Ducks, a team unexpectedly thriving in the Pacific Division, Detroit will need a combination of disciplined special teams, sharper finishing, and potentially a lineup shakeup to reclaim its competitive edge.
