In 2026, spending speaks volumes at Fenway Park. The Boston Red Sox have committed major money to a select group of stars and their payroll hierarchy offers a revealing glimpse into the franchise’s ambitions—and its biggest financial wagers.
Contracts carry their own narrative in the MLB and for the Boston Red Sox the 2026 payroll paints a picture of where the franchise’s priorities lie. With big money committed, expectations are unmistakably high.

In an era where pitching depth and offensive firepower come at a premium, the names leading the salary table represent more than just figures. They’re investments in performance, leadership and the hope of pushing deeper into October.

But what these numbers also reveal is how the Red Sox are balancing risk and reward—whether locking in long-term deals or paying for proven production. The story behind the roster’s highest-paid players shows how Boston plans to compete this season.

Who are the highest-paid Red Sox players in 2026?

Money shapes expectations in Boston and the 2026 payroll makes that impossible to ignore. The front office has doubled down on star power and frontline pitching, committing significant resources to a handful of names expected to define the club’s direction this season.

Garrett Crochet poses during the 2026 Boston Red Sox Photo Day (Source: Julio Aguilar/Getty Images)

According to Spotrac’s 2026 payroll data, left-hander Garrett Crochet leads the way at $28 million. After signing a long-term extension following his arrival in Boston, he enters the year positioned not just as the rotation’s anchor, but as the organization’s most expensive investment on the mound.

Veteran shortstop Trevor Story follows at $25 million, a figure tied to the multi-year deal he inked in free agency. His contract continues to loom large over the payroll conversation, especially as they look for stability and production.

These figures highlight more than just numbers: they outline Boston’s financial priorities. Pitching, veteran leadership and middle-of-the-order potential dominate the top of the ledger…

Aroldis Chapman made a striking statement about his desire to return to the New York Yankees, and the fan base seems to be on the same page.
When fans learn that some players are considering a return to their former teams, reactions can vary. However, in the case of Aroldis Chapman and his potential return to the New York Yankees, the reception is notably different. When asked about rejoining the Yankees next season, Chapman issued a firm statement, prompting an equally passionate response from fans.

In an interview with Swing Completo, Chapman expressed unequivocally that there is no chance he would come back to the Yankees. Following his statement, fans were quick to remind him of past grievances during his tenure with the organization, underscoring the mutual dissatisfaction.

“In Aroldis Chapman’s time as a Yankee: Didn’t show up to a mandatory workout ahead of the playoffs because he wasn’t guaranteed a roster spot in 2022; got a new tattoo during the season that became infected and was put on the 15-day IL; hurt the team’s postseason chances catastrophically in 2019, 2020, and 2022. The feeling is very much mutual,” a fan posted on X.

Another fan wrote: “I don’t think a single Yankees fan wants him back, he was terrible here,” and another one supported those comments “I wouldn’t want him back if he pitched for us for free. He has definitely turned it around in Boston – but he can’t pitch in NY.”

In light of Aroldis Chapman’s recent comments about the Yankees, here’s a compilation of him blowing games in pinstripes pic.twitter.com/mRJKuyMCKV
— Brandon 🇩🇴🇵🇷 (@BronxBombrs) October 28, 2025

At 37, Chapman is contemplating his future, expressing interest in playing for the Boston Red Sox next season. He joined the team this year in pursuit of another World Series title, but the Red Sox’s ambitions were cut short in their battle against the Dodgers.

Chapman’s full statement

Aroldis Chapman recently addressed rumors about a possible return to his former team, making it abundantly clear to fans and the organization that he has no interest in rejoining the franchise or taking any position with the team.

“No way. Not even dead. If I were told that I was being traded to New York, I’d pack my things and go home. I’ll retire right on the spot if that happens. I’m not crazy. Never again … I dealt with a lot of disrespect there,” Chapman stated.

Was Chapman important for the Yankees?

Analyzing Chapman’s tenure with the Yankees reveals that his performance did not quite meet expectations. Over seven years with the team, from 2016 to 2023, he took the mound 315 times in the regular season and made 17 postseason appearances wearing the iconic pinstripe jersey.

During his time in New York, Chapman allowed 185 hits, 106 runs, 96 earned runs, and 25 home runs. He also issued 153 walks, including 4 intentional, while striking out an impressive 453 batters.

Despite these figures, Chapman never secured a World Series title with the Yankees, and his postseason contributions were underwhelming. In 21.0 innings pitched during the playoffs, he gave up 12 hits, 4 runs, 4 earned runs, and 2 home runs.

Velocity has always been part of the New York Yankees’ mystique. From historic fireballers to today’s bullpen arms, speed on the mound carries a special weight in the Bronx, where a pitch’s sizzle can electrify an entire stadium.

In recent seasons, radar guns at Yankee Stadium have often become as much a spectacle as the scoreboard itself. Every blazing fastball is met with gasps, cheers and comparisons to legends who once defined the franchise.

Yet in a roster filled with power arms, only one can hold the title of fastest. That distinction sparks debates among fans, analysts and stat trackers alike—reminding everyone that pure speed remains one of MLB’s greatest thrills.

The fastest pitch in Yankees history: Who holds the record?

When it comes to sheer velocity in the Bronx, Aroldis Chapman is the undisputed king. On July 18, 2016, he unleashed a 105.1 mph fastball against the Baltimore Orioles, marking the fastest pitch ever recorded by a Yankees pitcher in the Statcast era.

Aroldis Chapman #54 of the New York Yankees celebrates their 5 to 2 win in 2017. (Source: Jason Miller/Getty Images)

The sheer force of that pitch left hitters staggered and instantly cemented his legacy as one of the most electric arms in franchise history. That record-setting night wasn’t an isolated incident.

He routinely threw pitches exceeding 100 mph, including multiple 104+ mph fastballs in the same game. His ability to combine velocity with pinpoint control turned the Yankees’ bullpen into a feared weapon, one capable of shutting down even the most potent lineups.

Every radar gun reading became a spectacle, energizing the stadium and leaving fans in awe. His dominance extends beyond regular-season games. In the 2017 ALCS against the Houston Astros, he delivered a 104.8 mph fastball under postseason pressure, proving that even the highest-stakes moments couldn’t slow his arm.

Across multiple seasons, he consistently sits atop Yankees velocity leaderboards, reinforcing the notion that speed isn’t just about raw numbers — it’s about impact, intimidation, and the kind of electric presence that only elite pitchers can bring to the mound.

In the vast universe of baseball, where records are forged and forgotten over time, there is one that remains etched in the collective memory of fans: the fastest pitch ever recorded in Major League Baseball.

Some whisper that others may have been even faster, thrown by legends from past eras, but without clear evidence, their existence fades into the air. Aroldis Chapman‘s record, however, remains steadfast.

Over the years, his name has become synonymous with speed, but beyond the numbers, his pitch represents something deeper—a breaking of limits that only a few chosen ones have had the privilege to witness.

What has been the fastest pitch in MLB history?

On September 24, 2010, at Petco Park in San Diego, Aroldis Chapman, a young relief pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds, threw a fastball that was initially clocked at 105 miles per hour (169 km/h).

However, later studies adjusted the figure to 105.8 mph (170.4 km/h), solidifying his status as the man who took pitching speed to new heights, according to sources like Pinstriped Nation and Ciber Cuba.

Although some skeptics mention legendary pitchers like Nolan Ryan and Bob Feller, whose pitches might have surpassed this mark, the lack of precise technology in their eras makes it impossible to confirm.

Thus, Chapman’s record stands firm, symbolizing an era where science and technology allowed for the exact measurement of his achievement. Few have come close to breaking the record, as reported by Sporting News.

Throughout his career, he continued to impress with his speed, recording multiple pitches exceeding 105 mph. This phenomenon not only highlighted his innate talent but also reflected the evolution of modern baseball.

Data analysis has allowed athletes to reach performances once considered unattainable. In this way, the “Cuban Missile” not only set a record but also embodied the spirit of innovation and improvement that defines the sport.

Even though we're quite deep into the offseason and most of the stars have already been signed, there are still some very good pitchers looking to find a new team.
If history has taught us something is that you cannot perform at the highest level unless you have some stellar pitching. Even some MLB teams that struggle to get hits have won the World Series thanks to their aces on the mound.

It doesn’t matter how manyruns you can put up or how good your defense is. The sad and hard truth is that no team can win unless it has some solid and reliable arms in the rotation and the bullpen.

Nonetheless, for whatever reason, some of the best hurlers in Major League Baseball remain unsigned this deep into the offseason. That’s why today, we’re going to make a case for the best pitchers still available.

MLB News: The Best Pitchers Still Available

3. Zack Greinke

    Zack Greinke – Getty Images

Even though he’s coming off a down year by his standards, the fact that Zack Greinke is still unsigned at this point in the winter is mind-boggling, to say the least. Especially considering he may not need a lot of money to join a contender.

Greinke has been one of the most consistent and steady contributors on the mound over the past decade or so. He’s better than most team’s fourth starter at the very least, so he should’ve gotten more interest in free agency.

2. Aroldis Chapman

    Aroldis Chapman – Getty Images

It seemed like the Aroldis Chapman era with the New York Yankees was all but over. And now that Brian Cashman has yet to re-sign the Cuban Missile after all the deals they got done, that might as well be the case.

Chapman has struggled with control and consistency as of late, and some believe his days as a closer are numbered. But he’s still one of the best RPs of the past two decades and should get another shot to prove his worth.

1. Nathan Eovaldi

    Nathan Eovaldi – Getty Images

Once again, Nathan Eovaldi was one of the few— if not the only— bright spots for the Boston Red Sox last season. He was efficient, consistent, and helped them stay in games even when their offense couldn’t get the job done.

But, considering how Chaim Bloom has handled his payroll over the past couple of years, a return to Fenway Park just doesn’t seem realistic at this point. Needless to say, multiple teams could and should be interested in his services.

New York Yankees star Aroldis Chapman - The Cuban Missile - knows that he's not getting any younger and is trying to add more diversity to his pitching arsenal.
The New York Yankees have put together one of the most overpowered offenses Major League Baseball has seen in a while. Slugging clearly isn’t an issue and their star-studded lineup promises to be a big threat year in and year out. When it comes to pitching, however, things get kind of rocky. Inconsistency, lack of depth, and multiple injuries have prevented the Bronx Bombers from getting back to the big stage, and some people question Aroldis Chapman’s ability to close out important games, as he’s been victimized by his opponents in the postseason as of late.

Chapman is known for his power and abilty to top the 100 mph mark with ease. However, he’s struggled with control and has been a bit of a coin toss when it matters the most for Aaron Boone’s team.

That’s why he’s trying to evolve and become a more complete and versatile pitcher, as he recently told The Athletic that he’s added the splitter to his repertoire now that he’s getting older and his speed may not be there every day.

Aroldis Chapman To Add The Splitter To His Pitching Arsenal

“I’m not 25 anymore. I’m older, I’m not throwing 105 miles per hour every day. That’s the reality. Believe it or not, I used to throw a splitter back in Cuba when I was a starter. It was a pitch that I had used way back, then later on when I came to MLB and I started pitching, they basically told me to not use the splitter anymore. That being said, it has always been a pitch that I felt comfortable throwing — in fact I feel more comfortable throwing a splitter than a changeup,” Chapman said.

The Yankees added Corey Kluber to their rotation this year in hopes of finally putting an end to their World Series drought but they’ll need their bullpen to also rise to the occasion, so hopefully, Chapman will be back to his best after two subpar seasons.

New York Yankees' star closer Aroldis Chapman was frustrated by MLB's decision to suspend him three games following the altercation with the Tampa Bay Rays.
The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays simply hate each other. It’s been like that for years and that’s not likely to change any time soon, with both teams fighting for the supremacy of the AL East.

Rays and Yankees are always a close pitch away from clearing the benches, and that’s exactly what happened a couple of nights away when Aroldis Chapman threw a 101 mph pitch over Mike Brosseau’s head.

Given the team’s histories, it’s pretty fair to think that Chapman did that on purpose. Then again, the flamethrower has had some struggles with his command and has barely pitched at all this season. Also, the Yankees were up 2 runs with 2 outs in the top of the 9th.

At the end of the day, Kevin Cash and Aaron Boone said some things, the players cussed each other out, and the league handed the Cuban a three-game suspension for his alleged role in the altercation.

Aroldis Chapman Will Appeal His Suspension

That’s why Chapman tried to clear the air and explain that he had no intention whatsoever of hurting Brosseau. He admitted that he’s struggled with his command all year long and it’s still trying to get back in shape:
