MLB is reportedly reviewing three key factors as it prepares to hand down disciplinary actions following a heated bench-clearing incident between Los Angeles Angels slugger Jorge Soler and Atlanta Braves right-hander Reynaldo Lopez.
The MLB world is reeling following a violent on-field altercation between Jorge Soler and Reynaldo Lopez during yesterday’s matchup between the Los Angeles Angels and Atlanta Braves.

The brawl, which ignited near the pitcher’s mound, has triggered a league investigation. MLB officials are reportedly focusing on three critical criteria as they determine the severity of the impending suspensions and fines.

Based on precedent for high-profile brawls, the league is reportedly reviewing the incident through the following lens:

Instigation: Officials are reportedly identifying the primary aggressor who initiated physical contact.

Prior history: The league strictly penalizes repeat offenders; a clean record can often mitigate the length of a ban.

Injury status: The presence of injuries resulting from the fight significantly heightens the likelihood of a long-term suspension.

MLB: Last night in Anaheim, Reynaldo Lopez and Jorge Soler threw punches in a wild Braves-Angels brawl.pic.twitter.com/QRnlh5rUav
— SHARP (@SharpAGOfficial) April 8, 2026

Identifying which player may be held responsible

This answers to the following factors will likely determine the severity of the disciplinary action for either Angels or Braves‘ player:

The Instigator: Video replay appears to show Soler initiating the violence, throwing the first punch at Lopez after a heated exchange.

Disciplinary Record: Fortunately for both players, neither has a significant history of on-field violence or previous ejections for fighting.

Injuries: While no official injuries have been reported, the league is closely examining footage of Lopez, who appeared to strike back while still clutching the baseball, a move that often leads to increased disciplinary action.

Potential disciplinary fallout

Because both players engaged in overt acts of violence, the MLB Disciplinary Committee is expected to be firm. Based on recent league history, Soler and Lopez could be facing 6-to-10 game suspensions and fines ranging from $25,000 to $50,000.

While both players maintain the right to appeal the league’s ruling—which could potentially reduce the number of games served—fines are rarely rescinded. The final decision now rests with league officials, who are currently interviewing the umpiring crew and reviewing high-angle Hawk-Eye footage to capture any verbal provocations that may have sparked the chaos.

Walt Weiss praises Atlanta’s rotation as Grant Holmes fires six scoreless innings, underscoring the Braves’ early-season pitching strength in a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Atlanta Braves’ rotation showed early-season promise Friday, as Grant Holmes carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning and Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson hit back-to-back home runs to secure a 2-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Braves manager Walt Weiss praised the outing as a sign the staff is coming together despite offseason injuries.

“When you get good starts, the game tends to just fall into place,” Weiss said after the victory according to MLB.com, highlighting the contribution of both Holmes and the lineup.

After Albies highlighted the ABS impact, Holmes’ performance capped a strong start for Atlanta’s rotation, which leads the National League with a 2.06 ERA, while the bullpen has allowed just four earned runs over 28 1/3 innings (1.27 ERA).

Rotation showing early promise

Holmes returned after missing the final two months of 2025 with elbow issues, including a partially torn UCL and flexor tendon. He averaged 95.2 mph with his four-seamer and touched 96.9 mph twice, completing six scoreless innings.

“There’s always concern when guys have missed big chunks of time,” Weiss added. “They’ve been great so far. I can’t be more pleased with our starting pitching.”

Holmes’ return adds stability

Holmes’ offseason forearm work has him confident and effective, giving the Braves a reliable arm as they navigate early rotation depth challenges. Early results suggest Atlanta’s pitching staff could be the team’s biggest strength in 2026.

A successful ABS overturn helped Ozzie Albies ignite an eight-run inning as the Braves routed the Diamondbacks, underscoring how technology can shift momentum in MLB games.
A single overturned call by the Automated Ball-Strike system, completely shifted the trajectory of Thursday’s game for the Atlanta Braves, transforming what looked like a quiet inning into a full-blown offensive surge against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Ozzie Albies was at the center of it, sparking what ultimately became an eight-run fifth inning in a 17-2 rout.

“I’m happy they have that system… that changed the whole game,” Albies said via MLB.com, underscoring just how pivotal his successful challenge turned out to be.

What should have been a strikeout on a full-count pitch instead became a walk after ABS showed the ball missed the zone. That single moment kept the inning alive, and set off a chain reaction that fueled one of Atlanta’s most explosive frames in recent memory.

ABS decision shifts momentum instantly

The overturned call not only extended the inning but also appeared to affect the flow of the game. What could have been the third out instead became the starting point of sustained pressure on Arizona’s pitching staff.

Ozzie Albies starts walking to first before the result of the ABS challengepic.twitter.com/cXhvpAZ3R2
— Underdog MLB (@UnderdogMLB) April 3, 2026

Atlanta capitalized quickly, with key hits from Matt Olson and Austin Riley driving in runs, while additional walks and timely contact kept the inning going. Even another overturned call later in the frame helped extend the rally, showing how multiple moments tied back to that initial challenge.

Technology proves decisive in modern game

The Braves’ outburst highlighted how technology like ABS can directly influence outcomes beyond just a single pitch. What seemed like a routine strikeout instead became a turning point that reshaped the entire inning and widened the gap on the scoreboard.

For Atlanta, the result was a dominant victory and a reminder of how quickly momentum can shift. For Albies, it reinforced the growing role of ABS in today’s game — where one review can change everything.

Spencer Strider will open the season on the injured list, raising early questions for the Braves’ rotation as Atlanta manages multiple pitching injuries ahead of Opening Day.
The Atlanta Braves will begin the 2026 season without one of their top arms, as Spencer Strider has been placed on the injured list with a strained oblique. The decision comes just before Opening Day, creating immediate questions about the team’s rotation plans.

Braves manager Walt Weiss confirmed the situation after Strider was scratched from his final spring start. “I think we’ve gotten out in front of this thing to a degree… so we’re hoping it’s not going to be a big deal,” Weiss said via MLB.com. The right-hander felt discomfort following a Minor League outing, prompting the team to act cautiously.

Strider had shown encouraging signs this spring, posting a 3.24 ERA in limited action as he looked to build momentum following an injury-affected 2025 season. His absence now leaves a significant gap for Atlanta to address early in the year.

Rotation takes early hit

Losing Strider disrupts the Braves’ starting rotation at a critical moment. As one of the team’s most dominant pitchers when healthy, his ability to generate strikeouts and control games makes him a central piece of the pitching staff. And with the Braves dealing with multiple injuries apart from Spencer Schwellenbach, his absence only adds to the early-season pressure on Atlanta’s depth.

Spencer Strider #99 of the Braves pitches in the first inning of a game against the Pirates. Edward M. Pio Roda/Getty Images

The timing is especially challenging, as Atlanta enters the season already managing workload concerns and lineup adjustments. Without Strider, the Braves will need other starters to step up immediately to maintain stability.

Injuries continue to pile up for Braves

The Braves’ pitching concerns extend beyond Strider. Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep are both sidelined following elbow surgeries, while Joey Wentz is out with a torn ACL. Depth options are already being stretched, with Martin Perez potentially needed sooner than expected.

Despite the setbacks, Weiss remains confident in the group. “We’ve got a long way to go… there’ll be more punches along the way. But we’ve got some quality arms in this camp,” he said. How those arms respond early in the season could define Atlanta’s trajectory while Strider works his way back.

https://bolavip.com/en/mlb/braves-new-look-projecting-the-pitching-rotation-after-lucas-giolito-signing

Coming off his time with the Red Sox, Lucas Giolito signs with Atlanta, where he's expected to slide immediately into the heart of the Braves' pitching staff.
The Atlanta Braves are taking a calculated flyer on veteran right-hander Lucas Giolito, signing him to a one-year contract for the 2026 season.

After a rocky stint with the Boston Red Sox, Giolito looks to revitalize his career and stabilize an Atlanta rotation facing early-season depth concerns.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the deal is worth $6 million. For the Braves, it’s a low-risk, high-reward move; for Giolito, it’s a “prove-it” opportunity to rediscover the form that once made him an All-Star.

Where does Giolito fit in the rotation?

The biggest hurdle for Giolito is the calendar. Having signed deep into the spring, he has missed the bulk of the preseason. However, internal injuries have created a vacuum in the Braves’ staff.

Lucas Giolito #54 of the Boston Red Sox.

With Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach, and Hurston Waldrep all sidelined or recovering, Giolito is projected to slot into the No. 3 or No. 4 spot once he is fully ramped up.

A fresh start after a tough exit for Giolito

Giolito arrives in Atlanta following a turbulent 2025 campaign in Boston. While he posted a respectable 10-4 record over 145.0 innings, his season was marred by inconsistency, punctuated by 17 home runs allowed.

He was notably absent from the high-leverage moments of the Red Sox’s postseason run, which ended in an American League Wild Card loss to the New York Yankees.

In Atlanta, Giolito won’t be handed a job. He joins a mix that includes Chris Sale, Reynaldo López, Grant Holmes, Bryce Elder, and prospect Didier Fuentes. However, with the Braves’ depth currently tested, the door is wide open for a veteran of his pedigree.

Timeline for debut

Don’t expect to see Giolito on the mound for the March 27 season opener. The righty will likely require two to three weeks of “spring training” style buildup, either at the Braves’ facility in North Port or with Triple-A Gwinnett.

If the acclimation process goes smoothly, Giolito could join the big-league club by mid-April. For a Braves team looking to reclaim the NL East crown, a healthy and effective Giolito could be the missing piece of the 2026 pitching puzzle.

Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar will reportedly miss the 2026 season after testing positive for PEDs a second time, leaving Atlanta with another roster challenge ahead.
The Atlanta Braves will be without Jurickson Profar for the entire 2026 season after the outfielder’s appeal of a positive PED test was resolved, resulting in a 162-game suspension. The development delivers a significant blow to Atlanta’s roster heading into the year.

“Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar will miss the entire 2026 season after his appeal of a positive PED test was resolved,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported. “He will serve a 162-game suspension for testing positive a second time and will be ineligible for postseason play.”

Profar was coming off a 2025 season in which he hit .245 with 14 home runs, 43 RBIs, and a .787 OPS across 318 at-bats, while also adding nine stolen bases. He had shown early signs of consistency in 2026 spring training, posting a .300 average and .733 OPS in limited action.

Suspension removes experienced bat from Braves lineup

Before the suspension was officially confirmed after his second positive test, Braves manager Weiss had reacted boldly to Profar’s season‑long PED suspension, offering a firm stance on the situation. Across his MLB career, Profar owns a .245 average with 125 home runs and a .731 OPS in over 4,000 at-bats. His ability to contribute offensively while providing lineup flexibility made him a valuable depth piece for a Braves team with postseason expectations.

Braves must adjust depth amid unexpected setback

With Profar now unavailable for the entire season, Atlanta will need to rely on internal options or explore external moves to reinforce the outfield. The absence adds pressure on the roster to compensate for the lost production, especially as the team looks to remain competitive throughout the season without one of its experienced contributors.

The Atlanta Braves manager Walt Weiss offered a candid assessment of the roster's latest hurdle: the season-long suspension of Jurickson Profar.
The Atlanta Braves‘ 2026 campaign faced a significant hurdle this week following the announcement of Jurickson Profar’s season-long PED suspension. Tasked with navigating the fallout, first-year manager Walt Weiss took a firm but measured stance, addressing the veteran outfielder’s absence and its impact on the club’s championship aspirations.

“I was very disappointed and frankly stunned when we got the news,” Weiss told the Foul Territory crew regarding MLB’s decision. “I said last spring that he was a good guy, and I still believe that. He had to win us over—certainly win me over—and he did exactly that through his work ethic and presence.”

Despite the league-mandated 162-game ban, Weiss emphasized the positive legacy Profar built during the 2025 season. As a key mid-season acquisition, Profar became a vital spark plug for an Atlanta roster that fell just short of a postseason berth in a tightly contested NL East race.

“He was a tremendous teammate and a vocal leader in our clubhouse who played with a fierce edge,” Weiss added. “Nobody saw this coming. My message to the group, however, was simple: this doesn’t change our standard. We have to be ready to compete for the 2026 title regardless of who is in the lineup.“

Jurickson Profar #17 of the Atlanta Braves poses for a photo.

Profar’s 2025 impact by the numbers

Profar’s versatility was a major asset for the Braves during their late-season push. To illustrate the hole his suspension leaves in the 2026 roster, here is a look at his production from the 2025 regular season:

Games Played: 80

At-Bats: 318

Batting Average: .245

Home Runs: 14

RBIs: 43

OPS: .787

WAR: 1.3

This marks the second significant setback for Profar, who missed the first half of 2025 under a previous 80-game suspension. With the veteran now sidelined for the duration of 2026, the Braves are expected to pivot to internal options like Mike Yastrzemski to anchor the outfield and designated hitter roles.

Following the stunning 162-game suspension handed to Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar by Major League Baseball, Chris Sale weighed in on the veteran's season-ending ban.
Chris Sale is stepping into a leadership role for an Atlanta Braves organization already reeling from a massive blow to its 2026 lineup. Major League Baseball officially notified the Braves on Tuesday that outfielder Jurickson Profar has been hit with a 162-game suspension.

Faced with the stunning loss of the projected middle-of-the-order bat, Sale broke his silence Wednesday morning from the Braves‘ spring training facility. “It was tough when I found out about it,” Sale told reporters. “Obviously, for us at this time of the year, it’s a difficult setback. We were preparing for the season and getting the staff locked in to face it, so this is certainly not the news you want to hear.“

The Braves now face the daunting task of filling the void left by Profar, who had been a productive piece of the lineup last season and was slated to be the primary designated hitter for the 2026 campaign. Despite his performance on the field, the league showed no leniency for a repeat offender, leaving the front office scrambling just weeks before Opening Day.

“I think what’s really important for this clubhouse is to focus on the challenges ahead,” Sale remarked. “What happened has to be in the past for this franchise right now. We have to keep moving forward.”

Jurickson Profar #17 of the Atlanta Braves poses for a photo.

Sale emphasizes ‘Business as usual’ mentality post-suspension

With Profar’s status settled and an appeal process looming, Sale made it clear that the Braves’ focus remains on the roster currently in camp. The veteran left-hander also offered his perspective on how Profar handles the fallout of the year-long ban.

“I’ll leave that to him; I’m not sure what his path looks like from here,” Sale said. “But like I said, this changes nothing for our goals. There are other things we need to focus on as we gear up for the season.“

As Opening Day looms on the horizon, Sale’s insistence on a “next man up” mentality underscores the urgency within the organization. While the Profar suspension represents a significant hurdle, the Braves appear determined to distance themselves from the distraction and maintain their status as a National League powerhouse.

Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Atlanta Braves is set to represent Venezuela in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. In a recent interview, he revealed a friendly wager with New York Mets star Juan Soto, adding an extra layer of excitement to the tournament.
Anticipation is high for the World Baseball Classic, as the sport’s brightest stars are set to converge in a single tournament to compete for the title of champion. Japan currently holds the crown, but in this edition, other teams have strengthened their lineups in hopes of claiming victory. Two formidable contenders are the Dominican Republic, led by New York Mets standout Juan Soto, and Venezuela, spearheaded by Ronald Acuña Jr. from the Atlanta Braves.

In the build-up to the eagerly awaited clash between these teams, Acuna Jr. revealed a playful wager he made with Soto. “I’ve got a low-key bet going with Soto that nobody knows about. If the Dominican Republic wins, I’ll show up to the next game decked out in DR gear. But if Venezuela pulls it off, he’ll be the one sporting full Venezuela gear. That’s the bet!“ Acuna Jr. disclosed to Abriendo Sports.

This friendly wager adds an extra layer of excitement to the matchup between Venezuela and the Dominican Republic, scheduled for March 11. This game marks the final group stage showdown for both teams in the World Baseball Classic.

Soto and Acuna Jr.’s Teammates in the WBC

With this wager generating buzz around the upcoming showdown between Venezuela and the Dominican Republic, it’s worthwhile to examine the rosters each team will bring to the World Baseball Classic.

The Atlanta Braves are about to begin the 2026 MLB season with a lengthy list of injured pitchers, including Spencer Schwellenbach, who was limited to just 17 games last season.
The Atlanta Braves are facing a dramatic situation, not only because Spencer Schwellenbach is currently in OUT status following elbow surgery, but also because a recent injury update highlights a long list of arms dealing with issues, including Hurston Waldrep and AJ Smith-Shawver.

It was Nugget Chef of UNDERDOG on X (@jayhaykid) who detailed a full rundown of Braves pitchers tied to the rotation who are either recovering or sidelined. The list also includes Bryce Elder, who is not injured but has been struggling and is no guarantee to be reliable for the 2026 MLB season.

The Braves may have to move forward without Spencer Schwellenbach for quite some time. He underwent surgery on his pitching elbow on Feb. 18, 2026, and is expected to miss at least eight weeks of the upcoming season, meaning he will need to be replaced in the rotation.

Braves’ injured rotation arms

The list begins with those who will not be available at the start of the season. AJ Smith-Shawver appears there after contributing nine starts last year, finishing with a 3.86 ERA and a 3-2 record. For a 22-year-old pitcher, it could be considered a solid third season in the majors.

Chris Sale is also mentioned, not because he is injured, but because Nugget Chef raised concerns about his age. However, Sale delivered a strong season last year, going 7-5 with a 2.58 ERA, the best mark among the Braves’ starting pitchers. Although he made just 20 starts, it was enough to show he still has plenty left in the tank.

“Think we’ll circle back to this gaslighting in late May.
Ronald Acuña Jr. opened up about how his previous World Baseball Classic experience shaped his game and shares his excitement as he prepares to represent Team Venezuela in 2026.
Ronald Acuña Jr. is leaving Atlanta Braves camp to join Team Venezuela for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, and he reflected on how his previous WBC experience helped him.

Acuña showed he is ready on the field as well. In Atlanta’s final Grapefruit League game, he stole two bases in the first inning and hit a grand slam in the third, helping the Braves beat the Boston Red Sox 15-8.

“I think it helped a lot,” Acuña said, according to MLB.com. “There’s good hitting and good pitching and a lot of superstars playing. The last World Baseball Classic, I didn’t have a good Baseball Classic, but there’s a new Baseball Classic this year. So I’m excited.”

Representing Venezuela in the WBC

Acuña will join teammates Ozzie Albies, Jurickson Profar, Chadwick Tromp, and Nacho Alvarez Jr. for the WBC. He expressed pride in representing his country: “Every time we put on the jersey that says Venezuela, I’m so proud. I want to do something special for my country, and I want to make everybody proud,” Acuña said.
