“Today, the Yankees placed LHP Max Fried on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 8/14) with a left elbow bone bruise,” the team announced on its social media.

In true, yet extremely cruel, “an eye for an eye” fashion, the Yankees lose a left-handed starting pitcher as they activate another in Rodon. Fans knew the Bronx Bombers would have to make a roster move to accommodate Rodon, but not many expected to lose Fried in the process.

The 2026 MLB season has been truly testing, and it wasted no time proving Aaron Boone’s “incomplete” description of the Yankees true once again.

Through 15 games in the 2026 MLB season, Fried has posted a 2.81 ERA and a 2.8 WAR. Moreover, he has 86.1 innings pitched, 79 strikeouts, and a 0.996 WHIP. Fried had helped New York establish arguably the most dominant starting rotation in the American League.

As for Rodon, as he gears up to start against the Baltimore Orioles, he hopes to pick up right where he left off and turn it up a notch during the 2026 MLB campaign. Rodon has pitched 46.1 innings, striking out 52 opponents and posting a 1.252 WHIP. Moreover, his ERA on the season is 3.30, with a 0.7 WAR.

NY Yankees’ starting rotation

With Rodon coming off rehab and Fried headed to the injured list, the Yankees have witnessed their rotation shake up in the blink of an eye. Cy Young Award favorite Cam Schlittler and Gerrit Cole will still command the top of the depth chart.

However, they are both right-handed, and with Fried out for at least a couple of weeks, that leaves Ryan Weathers and Carlos Rodon in prime position to run away with the main LHP job. With Clarke Schmidt out as well, the last starting option is RHP Will Warren.

Needless to say, the Yankees have been through enough adversity all year long. There might be more where that came from, so the Bronx Bombers must buckle up for a bumpy ride. In more ways than one, this is their Odyssey.

According to Nestor Quixtan from Heavy.com, the Panthers might have the ideal replacement to Marchand in Laine, who is sitting around in free agency. Although there would be several questions to be addressed mostly regarding the contract term, Laine may have all the ingredients of the kind of player that thrives in Sunrise.

Doubted, mocked, called to an early retirement, yet fueled by it all. That’s been a recipe for success for the Panthers before. Under Bill Zito, the Cats have channeled the best from players many around the NHL had given up on. Laine could be the latest addition to that list, and why not? A new name engraved on the Stanley Cup by season’s end. Because if Florida can stay healthy, there aren’t many teams that can take them out in a best-of-seven playoff series.

Contract concerns for Laine and Panthers

For Laine, however, it would also be a matter of being offered a contract worth his while. Where exactly that line is, though, remains unclear. Coming off a five-game season and facing concerns on several fronts—including injuries and his overall ability to produce consistently—Laine may not be able to ask for much. The Panthers, moreover, can’t hand out too much, either.

Aside from the Vegas Golden Knights, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Dallas Stars, who are over the cap, the Panthers currently have the narrowest cap space, with a measly $34,000 available, according to PuckPedia. In order to strike a deal with Laine, the Cats would have to make a roster move and, even then, sign Laine to a bonus-laden, performance-based deal.

Whether Laine would accept such an uncertain contract remains the biggest question. As confident in himself as he might be, Laine is wise enough to know he’d much rather make guaranteed money than chase a potential fortune. Obviously, admitting that even he and his camp are wary of just how productive he may be would be a terrible look, so Laine won’t ever make that feeling public. But there’s reason to believe it’s an actual thought.

Would Laine be a good fit in Florida?

The Panthers know it might be unrealistic to expect Laine to return to his 40-goal form from back in 2017-18. At least not right away, but perhaps he can eventually and gradually grow into a more similar version of himself. Still, Florida won’t toss Laine into a top-six role, largely because they don’t have one up for grabs, either. Instead, the job vacancy is on the third-line wing, where Marchand played alongside Anton Lundell and Eetu Luostarinen.

The Panthers don’t know how long Marchand will be out, but it’s always best to prepare for the worst just in case. Laine would bring a very different style from Marchand, nowhere near as energetic or defensively committed, but he could compensate with depth scoring. He could also take a second power-play unit to the next level, granting the Cats a two-headed monster in the man advantage.

To Florida’s fortune, Lundell and Luostarinen can hold it down defensively well enough by themselves. There’s a reason they are mainstays on the penalty kill in Sunrise, and they could take on a little more of the dirty work to allow Laine some freedom to find open spaces in the offensive zone and set up shop. As long as Laine gets his scoring touch back and is available, there might be no problem with that strategy. That’s still a big if, though.

Florida need to fill Marchand’s void

Even at 38, Marchand is irreplaceable for the Cats. There’s no sugarcoating that fact. Still, Laine may be an intriguing option. A completely different one, at that, but one that Paul Maurice may be able to make work regardless.

The Panthers’ key to success, along with an excellent defensive system that grinds out opponents, has always been deeply rooted in their depth scoring and how the Lundell-Luostarinen-Marchand third line could operate in the Stanley Cup Final as efficiently as another team’s first unit.

With Marchand out, that strength will face headwinds. Laine, however, could be a great solution. Most importantly, an unexpected one that could take the league by surprise. Just when the rest of the NHL thinks they have the Panthers figured out, the latest back-to-back champions could pull a rabbit out of their hat.

Biggest question is contract-wise

If Florida can figure out a way around Laine’s financial and term demands and stay cap-compliant at the same time, it seems there would be no harm in giving the experiment a shot. Most likely, Laine will be after some kind of term and job security.

The Panthers, like virtually every team linked to Laine up until this point, may be wary of such a commitment. Florida will likely want to bring Laine in on a professional tryout contract (PTO) or a prove-it deal. Laine may have no appetite for that. Finding that sweet spot in between will be what makes or breaks this potential signing.

If there’s two things Zito has accustomed fans in Broward County to, it’s: winning and always finding a way to make roster-boosting moves. Those traits may also excite Laine, who is well overdue for some success at the NHL level and may be willing to loosen up his end of the rope just to join a Stanley Cup contender, arguably the biggest one in the league.

“Obviously, we had a [running back] go down. Praying for Turbo [Miller] and what he’s got going on,” Skattebo admitted to media after Monday’s practice. “But we had a guy go down, we’ve got to fill the void, you know?

“We got a guy go down, brought another guy in. Najee [Harris] is a great player. I’m super excited to get to know him, meet him, and play with him. Whatever comes, comes, I’m super excited.”

After the Giants received bad news on Miller’s injury following the preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings, the team wasted little time addressing it. Apparently, Skattebo also wasted no time subtly confirming New York’s next move.

Did Skattebo say a little too much?

Not only did Skattebo talk about Harris as if he were a sure-thing addition to the Giants’ roster for the 2026 NFL season, but there was another curious thing. Skattebo was in the middle of a sentence when he was interrupted—likely by a media spokesperson for the franchise—cutting his answer short.

Maybe it was to prevent Skatt from diving deeper into the details and potentially revealing something New York wants to keep from the public for a bit longer. Still, based on what Skattebo said and how he said it, all signs suggest Harris impressed during his visit to East Rutherford and will become the newest member of Big Blue.

No red jersey for Skattebo

Along with Harris’ visit to East Rutherford, the Giants’ practice on Monday made headlines as Malik Nabers participated in team drills for the first time. Sporting a red non-contact jersey, even though it was a non-contact practice altogether, Nabers sent a clear signal that he is closer than ever to making his long-awaited NFL return. Asked about Nabers’ red jersey, Skattebo made something clear. If he ever needs to wear one, something must be seriously wrong.

“I think the ankle has to be in the wrong direction if the #44 red jersey gets pulled out,” Skattebo joked, referencing his season-ending injury last year. As long as he can put on his cleats, pads, and helmet, the Giants will have Skattebo locked and loaded to use as much as they want, and he’ll be ready to run through a brick wall.

That’s what he brings to the table for New York and why the G-Men are confident that, as long as Skattebo and company are healthy, they have a shot. Skattebo doesn’t even have to be at 100%, just healthy enough to suit up. When the lights shine the brightest, it’s very difficult to keep him sidelined.

“I promise it’s close. I vow to you it’s close,” Josh Pate stated on the Josh Pate’s College Football Show. “I would say the highest-profile quarterback battle in the country right now [is] happening at Alabama. It’s very much up in the air. There are shades of gray here. There is no definitive one way or the other.”

Maybe not to this extent, but an evenly matched quarterback battle was to be expected in Tuscaloosa. DeBoer and the Crimson Tide knew that ever since Ty Simpson declared for the 2026 NFL Draft. According to reports, Mack and Russell are neck and neck, and even DeBoer admitted he is far from reaching a definite answer.

DeBoer’s honest message on QB1 battle

“I don’t feel closer [to making a decision on the starting quarterback],” DeBoer said, via Sports Illustrated, after Alabama’s first fall scrimmage. “As the scrimmage went on, both [Simpson and Mack] got better. Had their moments early where they could have executed better. They could use some help from some guys once in a while. They’re not going to be perfect all the time.”

Alabama still has time before making a decision. However, the sooner DeBoer and company can figure things out, the better. After all, there’s a reason why the old idiom exists that having two quarterbacks on a team means a team has no quarterback. Alabama will start the 2026 NCAA season on Sept. 5 against the East Carolina Pirates at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Whether Russell, the second-year quarterback in Tuscaloosa, or Mack, the more experienced Washington transfer who followed DeBoer to Alabama, will start remains uncertain. However, the Tide already know whom they will face throughout the 2026 college football campaign.

On that note, the clock is ticking for the Avalanche. An eight-year contract extension remains within reach for Colorado, but on a limited time offer. In fact, the Avs have less than a month before such a long-term deal becomes a thing of the past in the NHL.

Under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the NHL and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA), the maximum term for players re-signing with their teamswill drop from eight to seven years starting Sept. 16. That means the Avs have less than a month left before an eight-year deal for Makar is no longer a possibility.

A seven-year extension wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, and to some, it may make little difference. But Colorado’s front office would hope to keep Makar locked in for as long as possible. If a 10-year deal were possible, the Avs would hand their 27-year-old blueliner one in a heartbeat. Under the current regulations, however, eight is the most they can do, but not for long.

Makar might be waiting for Quinn Hughes

Makar has shown a willingness to re-sign in the Mile High City and might even be on board with a max-term extension, even if the current trend among NHL superstars is to sign shorter-term deals and maintain control over their futures. Regardless, a deal has yet to come to fruition, and most signs point to Quinn Hughes’ situation with the Minnesota Wild being responsible for holding Makar back.

Not because Makar is suspicious of staying with his team, as Hughes may be, but because he wants to know where the market is set for the best defensemen in the league. Whoever signs first between Makar and Hughes will most certainly set a new record for the highest contract for a defenseman in NHL history. Bowen Byram ($12.5 million AAV) currently holds the record, but Hughes and Makar will likely surpass him, and perhaps it won’t even be close.

Thus, there are reasons to believe the shoe won’t drop until one of Hughes or Makar signs first. Minnesota is under much more pressure to re-sign Hughes, so it’s reasonable to think he will go first, while Colorado is relatively relaxed, knowing Makar is much more convinced of staying for the long term than Hughes is.

Makar’s current contract

As it stands, Makar will enter the 2026-27 NHL season on a contract year. The six-year, $54 million ($9 million AAV) deal he signed back in 2021 will expire at the end of the campaign, meaning Makar is a pending UFA. Among active defensemen’s contracts in the NHL, the Avs’ blueliner ranks 13th in AAV and 32nd in total value.

Needless to say, Makar’s first extension aged perfectly for Colorado, but it’s outdated for the current market, and it’s about time the Avs footed the bill as Makar deserves.

Although Boone has provided a significant update on Bellinger’s return, the anxiety in the Bronx won’t calm down until he is officially back. For the time being, the Yankees will be without their best bats, and thus quiet, head-scratching, criticism-provoking offensive outings are to be expected on a troubling daily basis.

After New York avoided a sweep at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays with a 4-3 victory in the series finale, Boone was sincere while addressing the Bronx Bombers with the MLB postseason looming on the horizon.

“This season has tested our character and our resilience,” Boone admitted, via MLB.com. “It’s games like this we continue to find ourselves in. We just got to keep fighting and know that we’re an incomplete team, but we have a chance to be who we want to be.”

NY Yankees know they are short-handed

Boone didn’t sugarcoat his message, though he ended it with an encouraging exclamation point. The Yankees are missing key players in almost every area of the game. Moreover, as Carlos Rodon nears his return, Boone has another dilemma brewing.

The setbacks have not only put the offensive struggles in the spotlight, but the criticism has also been directed at Boone for his decisions regarding the lineup and, of course, general manager Brian Cashman, who is responsible for the Yankees’ rather quiet MLB trade deadline.

NY Yankees struggle to get hot

Since the deadline, the Yankees are 6-6, which perfectly reflects the team’s status. Instead of looking like a steamrolling unit, the Pinstripers appear bang average, and that simply won’t cut it come playoff time.

Fortunately, though, New York expects to be fully loaded come October, and that’s when Boone’s side may find its best self. Whether it will have enough firepower to go all the way, only time will tell.

If the Yankees fall short, it won’t take long before fans are at Cashman and Boone’s throats over their cheap, penny-pinching approach at the deadline. As Boone, Cashman, and every member of the New York Yankees should know by now, that comes with the job.

“The noise that I heard about Patrik Laine came on Day 1 of NHL free agency and Day 1 of NHL free agency only,” Stefen Rosner reported on The Elmonters. “The Islanders had talks with Laine’s camp. I didn’t believe they were willing to offer anything more than a PTO.”

If the Islanders were only interested in signing Laine to a professional tryout and the Finnish winger’s camp stood its ground, then it’s easy to see why talks between the two sides fell apart.

More than a month has passed since the start of free agency, and the buzz around Laine remains relatively dull, with the Islanders falling behind other candidates. Maybe Laine will land with a New York team, just not the one on Long Island.

NY Rangers and others interested in Laine

While the Islanders are reportedly showing their doubts about Laine and taking a backseat, their cross-town foes, the New York Rangers, appear to be more daring. A report from the Montreal Gazette placed the Rangers among the frontrunners for Laine as the Canadiens give up the once-lethal sniper to the highest bidder.

The Broadway Blueshirts aren’t the only ones in on the Laine sweepstakes, however. The Toronto Maple Leafs have been linked to the former Habs winger for a while now and remain arguably the safest bet to land him. Other candidates include the Tampa Bay Lightning, Philadelphia Flyers, and Minnesota Wild.

Figuring out Laine

As long as Laine remains an unrestricted free agent (UFA) in the NHL, however, every organization has a shot at him. Laine is up for grabs; the issue is that many teams are wary of pursuing him after watching his production drop to a bare minimum and concerns about his availability multiply rather than quiet down in recent seasons. Regardless, if any team can get Laine back to his best, it will be getting a top weapon.

The gist of the problem is figuring out whether the embers of Laine’s once red-hot scoring touch can still be reignited or whether they are a thing of the past. Figuring that out while avoiding a contract that could come back to bite an organization is the main issue and what is slowing down any progress between Laine and his camp.

Apparently, the Islanders have made up their minds and feel better off without him. Maybe they will have a sudden change of heart in the future, perhaps too late, or perchance just in the nick of time.

That was made clear as the 22-year-old issued a powerful and honest statement about his recent outings. Instead of searching for excuses, the former fourth-round selection in the 2023 MLB Draft vowed to improve and promised results to interim manager Andy Green and the devoted fanbase in Queens.

“I am not enthusiastic with how the results have been recently, but I am more than uber-confident that I am going to turn it around and I am going to finish the year how I am going to finish,” Ewing stated, via the New York Post.

Ewing’s first year in the Show

Selected with the 134th overall selection in the 2023 MLB Draft, Ewing patiently waited for his opportunity with the Mets. Finally, he made his debut in the Show on May 12, 2026, when New York blew the Detroit Tigers out of the water by a score of 10-2.

Ewing had one hit and two runs in his debut. Since then, Ewing has had his ups and downs, but particularly in August, his production has hit a big bump in the road. Still, the young center fielder expects to turn things up a notch soon and end the season on a bright note, albeit any postseason dream is already completely crushed for the Orange and Blue.

Ewing’s stats so far

Leaving this past month out of the equation, Ewing has batter at .265 with a .338 OBP, .399 SLG, and .737 OPS. However, his numbers so far in August bring Ewing’s stats down considerably. As a result, Ewing now averages .255 on the season, along with a .326 OBP, .386 SLG, and .712 OPS through 82 games with the Mets.

With the Yankees struggling to string together solid at-bats, ace Gerrit Cole urged the offense to step it up amid the absences of Bellinger, Stanton, and Judge. Unfortunately, no one knows for certain when the trio will return. That was made clear as manager Aaron Boone provided an uncertain timeline for Judge, and Bellinger didn’t do much to clear things up with his latest comments, either.

“I think that that would be very positive if I could [be activated before Sept. 1]. I’m feeling really good. I’m just kind of right on track of a normal strain,” Bellinger admitted to reporters, via NY Daily News. Bellinger did confess to feeling tightness in his hamstring, though.

By the way Bellinger phrased his answer, stating it would be “very positive” but making no comment on whether it would actually be realistic for him to be back before August ends, it appears he has his fair share of doubts. September 1 is an important date because that’s when MLB rosters expand from 26 to 28 players.

The sooner New York can get Bellinger back on the active roster, the better, especially considering Stanton and Judge must be activated, too, and are expected to return after Bellinger. If Bellinger returns before the roster deadline, the Yankees can make the pertinent change with time to breathe, and then it would only be a matter of activating Stanton and Judge to fill out the 28-man roster.

When the time comes, the Bronx Bombers will have to make a decision, and most signs point to one of Amed Rosario, Spencer Jones, or even the wet-gunpowdered designated hitter Ben Rice being demoted from the active roster.

NY Yankees need Bellinger back

Regardless, it would all be much easier if Bellinger returned from his Grade 2 hamstring strain before August ends. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees that will happen. Bellinger is on the right track, but even he didn’t dare make such a promise.

The veteran outfielder and first baseman knows that in a passionate market like the one in the Bronx, there aren’t many things as painful as unfulfilled promises. It’s better not to get ahead of oneself, even if it means putting the organization in a compromising position going forward.

“Aaron Boone said a timeline of a month ‘could be’ in play, though nothing is set in stone,” as reported by Gary Phillips from New York Daily News Sports on X.

The Yankees‘ manager avoided setting a formal one-month window for Judge’s return but did hint at it. It would be on par with the initial reports regarding the star slugger’s injury and projected comeback. Many reports suggested Judge would be back in mid-September, and Boone‘s timeline—uncertain and tentative as it was—would put him on track for that return.

NY Yankees are missing Judge

The Pinstripers desperately need Judge back. As of late, the at-bats have turned dry, leading to Gerrit Cole urging the offense to step up its production amid the absences. The recent hardships have also led to a mea culpa, as Jazz Chisholm Jr. got brutally honest about his struggles.

So far, the self-criticism has yet to translate into better results, though. As much as the Yankees yearn for Judge’s return—along with Cody Bellinger’s and Giancarlo Stanton’s—they know better than to rush their stars back, and Boone made that clear as well.

“We expect him back, but we’re in the early stages of baseball activity,” Boone stated, via USA Today, about Judge’s injury recovery. “Hopefully things continue to go well.”

NY Yankees won’t rush Judge

Timelines aren’t entirely solid, least of all those announced as tentatively as Judge’s latest one, and if the player isn’t fully healthy by the time the original target date arrives, New York will take as much time as he needs.

The Bronx Bombers themselves may not have that much time amid a heated postseason race, but that’s a different story. Whether it could come back to bite them or not, Boone and his staff have made their preference clear.

Regardless of what happens next, the Yankees must lie in the bed they’ve made and hope for a good night’s rest, even in the City That Never Sleeps.

With that in mind, it’s reasonable to understand why the Buckeyes have decided to change their annual celebration of graduating seniors, even if students and fans themselves don’t agree with it.

As the Buckeyes announced their home-game themes for the upcoming 2026 NCAA football campaign, something caught the attention of fans. Football’s Senior Day will be celebrated in the home opener (Sept. 5) against the Ball State Cardinals, rather than the typical home finale against Michigan. In that sense, Ohio State is shying away from tradition.

Unusual change to schedule

Instead of honoring the senior classmen on the Buckeyes’ football roster in the last regular-season home game, this time they will be honored in the home opener against an inferior opponent, and with the rest of the season still ahead. Considering Ohio State’s recent struggles against Michigan at The Horseshoe, it’s hard not to believe that had something to do with it.

The Wolverines won the last two games in Columbus and boast a favorable 29-27-2 record when playing Ohio State on the road. Maybe the Buckeyes don’t want their despised rivals from Ann Arbor to ruin what’s supposed to be a celebratory day—once again. Losing “The Game” stings badly enough; doing so at home only hurts more, and tarnishing the seniors’ final home game may be too much to bear.

Throughout the years, Senior Day has been held during “The Game” regardless, but it seems the Buckeyes want to break the trend and will go to any length to do so. Fans, however, disapprove. “Quit messing with traditions. Senior Day belongs on Nov. 28th! Something special about it on The Game,” a Buckeyes fan said in response to the team’s post. “Senior Day Week 1 is a terrible idea,” another user chimed in.

Ohio State’s home-schedule and game themes

Ohio State will host seven regular season games at The Shoe, starting off with Senior Day against Ball State in the first weekend of September and wrapping it up against Michigan in “The Game” on Nov. 28th.

While Ohio State steered away from tradition with their changes to Senior Day and “The Game”, they still didn’t name Michigan. Instead, that remained the same, with the Buckeyes referring to the Ann-Arbor school as That Team Up North (TTUN).

Schneider is a pending restricted free agent (RFA) in the NHL, meaning the Rangers run little risk of losing their young defenseman and would get a draft pick in return in the worst-case scenario. Still, the Blueshirts will likely hope to get a bit more in return for the 24-year-old blueliner.

At the very least, New York wants to set its own terms rather than conforming to the offer-sheet compensation set by the league. The signs point in the same direction, and that’s toward a trade. Whether it happens sooner or later remains to be seen.

“Braden Schneider is heading toward his last RFA summer, which should serve as a deadline of sorts,” Vincent Mercogliano reported on The Athletic. “An eventual trade for forward help remains a logical outcome, especially considering the new wave of defensemen who have recently been added to the pipeline.”

NY Rangers grow confident on defense

New York didn’t waste time during the NHL offseason. The blueline was an obvious area of need for Mike Sullivan and company, and Chris Drury and the front office made sure to fill every hole. Whether those solutions stick and meet expectations, only time will tell.

For the time being, however, it’s one less item on the Blueshirts’ to-do list. Thus, Schneider is no longer a vital part of the defensive corps, but he remains the team’s biggest (realistic) trading chip and the ace up their sleeve in a potential acquisition of a top-six forward, preferably a young buck.

The Rangers reportedly already know they must use their 2027 first-round pick on a center, one who could eventually replace Mika Zibanejad or J.T. Miller in the top six, but they could also explore the trade route for such a talent. Schneider may not be enough to acquire a top young prospect from another team’s pipeline, but no one really knows when it comes to trades in the NHL. To each their own.

After filing for arbitration, Schneider put the pressure on the Rangers and got himself a one-year, $5.5 million contract through the 2026-27 campaign. Considering Schneider has registered 87 points (20 goals and 67 assists) in 368 games with the Broadway Blueshirts, his $5.5 million cap hit may be more than what New York was initially willing to pay.

Still, with the salary cap rising and arbitration knocking on the door, the Rangers acknowledge it’s not terrible either. However, the team’s concerns are far from dissipated. The Rangers are still keeping a wary eye on their former first-round pick, and all the reports coming out of the Big Apple suggest the young defenseman will be traded.

Before or during the season, ahead of the deadline, as an RFA or as part of a sign-and-trade, there is no such thing as a wrong answer at this point.

With the trio of Bellinger, Stanton, and Judge out until further notice, the Yankees appear stuck in a Groundhog Day-like fate. Their latest outings look virtually indistinguishable from one another. New York’s pitching rotation looks dominant all game long, but the offense remains anemic, and eventually, a defensive breakdown decides the game. Sick and tired of watching this scenario unfold and determined not to let it linger any longer, Cole sent a strong message.

“We’re having a good time pitching and playing close games. Certainly we want to blow guys out and secure as many wins as possible,” Cole admitted, via the New York Post. “At the same time, we’re throwing the ball well, we’re playing good defense and we’re hanging in a lot of games, giving ourselves a chance to win.”

Cole calls out the offense

Obviously, Cole didn’t go as far as to throw his teammates under the bus. He didn’t need to, he still got his message across. It’s clear the subpar batting is costing New York in its race for postseason baseball, while the strong pitching is the main reason the Yankees are even in these games.

This topic is nothing new. Recently, manager Aaron Boone warned Jazz Chisholm Jr.—arguably the most disappointing Yankees batter during the 2026 MLB season—and even Chisholm Jr. was brutally honest about his at-bat struggles. As much as fans in the Bronx may want to use Jazz as a scapegoat, the problems in the batting order extend far beyond Chisholm Jr.

Clearly, and reasonably so, being without three of their most efficient and powerful bats (Bellinger, Judge, and Stanton) hurts. That’s still not an excuse strong enough for Boone and company to be complacent with the recent batting numbers. Empty at-bats and quiet innings continue to ruin otherwise great days and nights on the mound, and at some point, enough has to be enough, even without the three stars.

NY Yankees letting elite pitching go to waste

Cole didn’t name names or point fingers across the dugout, but he delivered a wake-up call regardless. The Yankees boast a Cy Young Award favorite in Cam Schlittler and arguably the best rotation in the American League.

Still, they have yet to firmly establish themselves as a playoff team in 2026. That’s mainly on the offense, as its production leaves much to be desired and has the red-hot pitchers scratching their heads.

Both quarterbacks will get their chance to command the Browns’ offense as they visit the Bears at Soldier Field. Exactly how many drives each signal-caller will have remains to be seen. Rather than focusing on defeating Chicago, Cleveland will be focused on its QBs, hoping to have an epiphany about who the starter should be during the 2026 NFL season.

According to ESPN, Watson will start the game under center, with Sanders expected to replace him, perhaps in the second quarter. Although that could indicate the veteran QB is ahead of the sophomore in the battle for the starting job, fans should wait before crowning a winner. On the other end of the field, Caleb Williams won’t play for the Bears, meaning the Browns have something less to worry about.

Sanders will get his chance next week

While Watson will be the Browns’ starting quarterback during Week 1 of the 2026 NFL Preseason, Monken and his staff have a plan in place. Next week, when the Browns host their Lake Erie neighbors, the Buffalo Bills, at Huntington Bank Field, Sanders will start for Cleveland.

Most likely, whoever gets the nod for Week 3’s showdown against the New England Patriots will be the one trending toward winning the quarterback battle. Still, that’s further down the road.

For the time being, both Watson and Sanders must focus on the task at hand, which is playing smart football against the Bears. Monken has high expectations for both quarterbacks and expects them to meet those expectations, even if it’s only over a couple of preseason drives.

What Browns are looking for out of Watson and Shedeur

“This is a coaching staff—brand new coaching staff, mind you—that has no preconceived notions of either quarterback. They’ve really given both Watson and Sanders a clean slate,” Courtney Cronin reported on SportsCenter. “It’s the two-minute drill that the front office is looking most closely at. And that will go as long as they’re splitting first-team reps.”

Just like in a two-minute drill, the pressure is on the Browns’ quarterbacks. The ball is in their court, and their future in the 2026 NFL season is in their hands. Oftentimes, preseason games are considered meaningless, but that’s definitely not the case for Cleveland, which is arguably the team to watch during this three-week stretch as it faces a crucial decision—one that will make waves and raise eyebrows regardless of who earns the starting job between Sanders and Watson.

“The fact neither player (Xhekaj and Bolduc) has signed yet leads me to believe they could become part of sign-and-trade deals,” Stu Cowan reported on Montreal Gazette.

Though a fan favorite, Xhekaj’s name isn’t new to the NHL rumor mill, with many reports linking the Canadiens’ blueliner to a trade before the start of the new season. Bolduc hasn’t been mentioned nearly as much since arriving in Montreal but is no stranger to it either, as he landed in the City of Saints in a trade from the St. Louis Blues.

Xhekaj’s situation

Xhekaj’s second NHL contract, a two-year, $2.6 million deal, expired after the 2025-26 season. The energetic defenseman remains an RFA, but the Habs have yet to hand him an extension. Although he was eligible, Xhekaj opted not to file for arbitration, making no use of the leverage-gaining maneuver.

Xhekaj and his camp aren’t asking for a big contract, and the Canadiens, who have over $9 million in cap space, could very well afford an extension. However, it’s clear the Habs have their doubts about re-signing the 25-year-old bottom-pairing defenseman.

Through 230 games in his career, Xhekaj has recorded 10 goals and 23 assists. At times, he may provide a spark for the team, but at others, he may turn into a liability. Last season, for example, Xhekaj tallied just four points but 116 penalty minutes (PIM) in 65 outings. In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Xhekaj appeared in 13 games for the Canadiens, logging only two points yet 28 PIM.

Bolduc’s NHL future

While Xhekaj came into the league undrafted, Bolduc was a first-round selection in 2021, which is part of the reason why his situation raises so many questions for Montreal. St. Louis had its doubts about him and chose to trade the Quebec native back to his home province.

However, his first year in Quebec’s metropolis wasn’t much better. Playing in a contract year with his entry-level contract expiring, Bolduc totaled 30 points in 78 games for the Habs. Still, it doesn’t seem to have been enough for the front office to be impressed. Bolduc wasn’t arbitration-eligible, unlike Xhekaj, who was but chose not to go down that path.

Different realities could lead to same fate

In many ways, Bolduc and Xhekaj’s situations have nothing to do with each other. It’s only that both situations lie in the hands of Montreal, and reports hint they could be in for a similar fate.

Offer sheets are another alternative, and perhaps a reasonable one for teams not looking to negotiate with the Habs. However, with both Bolduc and Xhekaj trending toward signing low-AAV deals, there’s reason to believe an offer sheet could be matched by Montreal, leading back to square one, where a sign-and-trade might be the most reasonable option.

“I don’t know [why it’s been a struggle for Chisholm Jr. this year]. Missing his pitch a fair amount. You have got to make hay when you get your pitches,” Boone said about Chisholm Jr., via SNY. “He’s making fairly good swing decisions, he’s not chasing, and there’s some patience in there. He just hasn’t gone on that hot streak really at any point [this season].“

Although the past few days have actually been encouraging for the Yankees, with Boone revealing important progress on Aaron Judge’s return and another injured player, Cody Bellinger, proving New York’s timeline wrong, Chisholm Jr. hasn’t jumped on the positive news train.

Instead, Chisholm Jr. has been arguably the most disappointing player on the Yankees throughout the 2026 MLB season. Fans often thought his slow start was just that, but as New York went deeper into the year, the 28-year-old never really found his footing—and still hasn’t.

Chisholm Jr. can’t afford such struggles

For a player on an expiring contract who is making $10.2 million in 2026, it may be inexcusable. Boone didn’t go as far as to say it, but he did hint at his disappointment with the way Chisholm Jr.’s contract year has gone.

Once the season comes to an end, Chisholm Jr. will become an unrestricted free agent in Major League Baseball. The pressure is definitely on him now. Barring a sensational late stretch and a come-to-life performance in the postseason, the second baseman will miss out on a lot of money on his next contract.

Many fans in the Bronx even went as far as to ask Brian Cashman and the Yankees to trade Jazz at the deadline. That didn’t happen, and New York will stick with Chisholm Jr. through the 2026 campaign.

However, the odds of him being back with the Pinstripers in 2027 are slim and only grow slimmer with every head-scratching at-bat. If he is back, it will be on a contract far different from the current one-year, $10.2 million deal he signed after barely avoiding arbitration.

Chisholm Jr.’s numbers

Chisholm Jr. has had a contract season to forget. His numbers are only better than those from his rookie campaign, in which he played just 21 games. Without a shadow of a doubt, this has been the worst season of his MLB career. Through 112 appearances, Jazz is batting .216 with a .296 on-base percentage, a .391 slugging percentage, a .687 OPS, and a measly 0.8 WAR.

“Everybody was happy that [Nabers] was out there. It’s a big step to get into team drills. For him to do that, it was a milestone, I would say, for our team,” Harbaugh told media after Nabers participated on team drills during the Giants’ latest practice.

Harbaugh and the Giants witnessed firsthand Nabers’ long recovery from the season-ending ACL and meniscus tear he suffered in Week 4 of the 2025 NFL season. As a new season draws closer, the G-Men acknowledge that Nabers is entering the home stretch of his rehab, and the light at the end of the tunnel is glowing brighter by the day. Still, New York is taking precautions.

NY Giants are patient with Nabers

Although Nabers participated in team drills and has seen his workload ramped up over the past few days, that’s not to say Harbaugh and his staff aren’t keeping a close eye on him. Nabers wore a red, non-contact jersey on Thursday when he took part in team drills, indicating he’s still not fully cleared for contact. Still, it wasn’t as if the defense handed anything to Nabers, either.

“He wasn’t untouched,” Giants coach Chad Hall said, per Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. “[During training camp] in West Virginia, that was like a glorified walkthrough. This was a lot more intense.”

No one would dare go too hard on Nabers, though. Malachi Fields may impress teammates and make a push to be WR2 on Big Blue, but everybody knows the top spot is reserved for Nabers. And the Giants are determined to have their star wide receiver return on his own terms, not rush anything, and certainly not cost him a shot at redemption by putting him in harm’s way.

Encouraging sign for Nabers

“Again: Everything points toward him being back for the start of the season,” SNY reporter Connor Hughes stated after Nabers’ latest participation in Giants practice.

That’s always been the goal for New York: having Nabers back for the Week 1 season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. It won’t be a smooth road ahead, as Nabers will have to clear more hurdles, but it seems he is on the right track.

“I would think [Larkin] will be accepted in the locker room,” Red Wings beat writer Ted Kulfan said on 97:1 The Ticket. “That won’t be an issue, things get worked out between those guys.“

While they may not all agree with Larkin’s decision to request a trade, NHL players can see where the center is coming from, and the Red Wings’ locker room is no different. Thus, Larkin may not be walking into the wolf’s mouth if he returns to Detroit, at least for training camp. How the loyal fanbase in Motor City would react, however, is another question.

Larkin trending to stay in Detroit for a while

“As we get closer and closer to training camp, I can definitely see Larkin at least reporting to camp and starting the season with the Wings,” Kulfan stated during his appearance on the radio show.

That would definitely be a risky strategy, though. Fans would most likely jeer Larkin every time he touches the puck if he starts the 2026-27 NHL campaign with the Red Wings after asking for a trade and triggering a costly domino effect in the process.

However, Detroit may have no choice but to go down that route. The Minnesota Wild need outside help to trade for Larkin, and no interested team is willing to meet the Red Wings’ demands, leaving Detroit facing a major problem in trade talks because of its high asking price.

Can Detroit and Larkin figure things out?

The simplest solution seems to be to try and figure things out. That will come at a cost, but if booing is the price to pay, then Larkin and the Red Wings will have to foot that bill. It might not last long.

If Larkin redeems himself and the team gets off to a hot start, all may be forgotten, and the captain might even change his mind about his plans for the future. Unlikely? Perhaps, but it still seems like the best shot both parties have at the moment.

Things can change when the puck drops, but until then, Larkin and Detroit will have to go through with the plan.

“I have been locked in on training camp and that’s been my number one focus. I have a lot of gratitude for my time at LSU and I’m proud of what my teammates and I accomplished there. Obviously there are issues to be worked out between my team and LSU and my hope is that it will get done privately,” Daniels wrote on a post on his Instagram stories. “My sole personal focus is on Commanders’ football. I realize the business of football is unique and I trust this can all be resolved.”

Unfortunately for Daniels, reports of his team’s cease-and-desist letter to his alma mater went viral and put him in a bad light in the eyes of NFL and college football fans. Moreover, it will be something many will keep an eye on, meaning Daniels may not be able to simply sweep it under the rug.

The root of the rift

Daniels’ legal demand to his former school indicates LSU can no longer use the quarterback’s name, image, and likeness (NIL). Once again, NIL is in the eye of the storm in college football.

However, that’s not exactly where the drama stemmed from. Instead, Daniels didn’t appreciate that the Tigers handed DJ Pickett, a sophomore cornerback, the No. 5 jersey, which Daniels wore when he won the Heisman Trophy in 2023, becoming the third Heisman winner in school history (Billy Cannon in 1959 and Joe Burrow in 2019).

No player has worn Burrow’s No. 9 since the historic 2019 college football season, and there’s an argument to be made that Daniels’ number deserved the same honor.

More drama in Baton Rouge

With this latest chapter, yet another dramatic layer is added to Lane Kiffin’s tenure in Baton Rouge, albeit he has yet to make his debut. Kiffin and LSU already have enough on their plate as they pay close attention to Sam Leavitt’s injury updates going into the new season, and a rift with a school legend is far from ideal. Perhaps unknowingly, Kiffin and the school brought an even bigger problem onto themselves.

It remains to be seen whether LSU will strip Pickett of the No. 5 jersey or if the school will double down on its decision, even if it costs them a relationship with an elite alumnus—and potentially leads to more legal troubles. Daniels hopes things can be worked out behind closed doors, but it feels unlikely considering the college and personal brands involved.

Starting quarterbacks—and NFL starters in general—rarely play more than a couple of drives in Week 1 of the preseason. For example, San Francisco’s quarterback Brock Purdy won’t play against Tennessee in the preseason. Regardless, Ward made his intentions clear as the Titans take on the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

“Cam Ward said he’s excited to get more than a couple of drives in the preseason game on Thursday. Ward said he’s looking forward to getting into a rhythm,” Turron Davenport of ESPN NFL Nation reported on his X account.

Ward won’t play much

Albeit his personal wish for the upcoming preseason game against the Niners, it’s unlikely Saleh and the Titans will risk Ward by playing him for too long. It’s only the first preseason game, at the end of the day.

As important as it is for Ward and Tennessee that the starting quarterback finds his footing before Week 1 of the NFL regular season, keeping him safe and away from injuries or setbacks is paramount.

Ward will get his chance to lead more than a couple of drives and play up to an entire quarter or half later in the preseason. For the time being, he must be content with stepping onto the field for a couple of drives.

Who will be playing instead of Ward?

Ward will start the game for the Titans against the Niners but will be replaced early on. Instead, backup quarterbacks Mitchell Trubisky, Will Levis, and Hendon Hooker will share most of the offensive drives.

They have much more to prove, as there is no debate over who the Titans’ starting quarterback is, but the QB2 role is still up for grabs.

Ward wants to walk his talk

Coming off a heated week of joint practices against the 49ers, Ward wants to send his message on the field. That’s not to say he didn’t engage in the trash talk throughout the week, though. According to reports from practice, Ward and San Francisco star Fred Warner went at it, though it was all in good competitive spirit.

“Yeah, [Warner was talking a lot]. I got him riled up a little bit. But that’s what I want to see. I want him to be at his best, so when I’m at my best, I know what I can and can’t do in a game,” Ward said after the Titans’ joint practice with the Niners. “He helped me out a lot. I started talking (expletive). The right things to say to a guy like that, because they don’t hear that a lot from specific quarterbacks.”

While Warner will likely play limited snaps as well in the opening week of the NFL Preseason, Ward is looking to send a message in the few plays he goes up against the 49ers’ starting defense, and show them he is nothing to play with entering his sophomore year in the league.

“They’re all going to play,” LaFleur told reporters about how he plans to use the Cardinals’ starters in Week 1 of the 2026 NFL Preseason. “It’s not going to be much. It could be one drive or, maximum two for those main guys. That includes Jacoby [Brissett].”

Brissett didn’t play during Arizona’s last-second loss to Carolina in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. Thus, this will be the first time fans see the Cardinals’ starting quarterback heading into the 2026 NFL season.

Brissett agreed to a contract restructure during the offseason, which only adds to the pressure on him to perform in 2026. An NFL preseason game against the Raiders—in which Brissett will likely only play a drive or two—won’t have any impact, but it will be something to keep an eye on heading into the new campaign.

Who will be Cardinals’ starting QB vs Raiders?

Brissett will likely command the Cardinals’ huddle for the first drive or two of the preseason matchup against the Raiders. However, that will be all fans see from him. Going down Arizona’s depth chart, Gardner Minshew and Kedon Slovis will replace Brissett against Las Vegas.

Brissett is the No. 1 QB in town and is set to make $15.5 million this season, so the Cardinals will keep him out of harm’s way during the NFL preseason as much and as best as they can.

Why Carson Beck isn’t playing tonight for Cardinals

Most fans hoped to see Carson Beck in the preseason matchup against the Raiders, but the rookie has been ruled out with a rib injury. Beck sustained the setback during the Hall of Fame Game and practiced through soreness and pain all week.

Ultimately, though, Arizona made the wise choice by declaring Beck out. Thus, the second chapter of Beck’s NFL journey through the desert will have to wait. Moreover, there won’t be a rematch—even if only for a few minutes—of the 2026 National Championship Game between Fernando Mendoza and Carson Beck.

Fans want to see Carson Beck

It wasn’t the toughest competition or the biggest of stages, but rookie quarterback Beck made a great first impression during the Hall of Fame Game. The Cardinals’ third-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft showed composure and a needle-threading ability that fans in the desert haven’t seen from a quarterback in a while.

Well aware that Brissett is the starting QB heading into the season and that may be the wiser decision, the fanbase still wants to see Beck more. Everybody knows what Brissett brings to the table; they want to see what Beck can do and whether Arizona has landed its quarterback for the future in the 24-year-old rookie.

Brissett is the sure thing. Arizona knows the veteran can keep them at a constant level, but with few sparks. With Beck, however, anything can happen. As a rookie, he will surely be more irregular, but the peaks may be higher. Injuries may be something to keep an eye on, though, as Beck has missed key moments in his college career due to health issues and will miss an NFL game because of one, too.

However, Bellinger continues to prove the Yankees’ initial timeline wrong as he is well ahead of schedule. It seems Bellinger will be the first of the trio to return to MLB action. Meanwhile, Stanton may only be a step away from returning and has started running bases, albeit to a limited extent—which Bellinger hasn’t done yet. Regardless, manager Boone believes Bellinger remains ahead of the rest of the injured stars.

“[Bellinger hasn’t started base-running yet], but Bellinger feels closer [to returning], though,” Boone admitted during an appearance on Talkin’ Yanks podcast. “He’s doing agility. I would expect that intensity to be pretty good this week. I would think we would get him into a game or two before bringing him.”

NY Yankees are on a roll

Injury-riddled or not, with or without Judge, Bellinger, and Stanton, the Bronx Bombers are putting up a resistance and staying afloat in the AL East race. New York is still several games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for the division lead and a spot in the American League Division Series, but the Yankees are still ahead of the Boston Red Sox in second place.

Moreover, the positive news come in bunches. Boone revealed important progress in Judge’s injury recovery, which only adds to the hype in the Bronx as the postseason draws closer, and the Pinstripers appear to be right on track.

NY Yankees’ lineup came to life

On top of it all, the starting rotation of Cam Schlittler, Max Fried, and Gerrit Cole is on a tear despite Carlos Rodon’s absence. Even Ryan Weathers is putting pressure on Boone to give him an even bigger role.

The offense has come alive after some rough outings, and Trent Grisham’s surge is a big reason, as is the immediate impact from rookie George Lombard Jr. Long story short, the Yankees are clicking, even without arguably their best hitters in Judge, Bellinger, and Stanton.

All that matters, however, is how the Bronx Bombers do in the postseason, and fans will have no fond memories of this 2026 campaign if it ends in the same old shaggy-dog story. The Yankees are well aware of that. And that’s another reason why Boone and company won’t rush any of his injured stars back onto the plate.

Just as the Red Wings face a major problem because of their high asking price for Larkin, the Wild lack the assets that would make Detroit interested in sending its captain to Minneapolis. Minnesota has seemingly accepted its fate.

Perhaps the only way the Wild could trade for Larkin is if another organization chimes in and lends them a hand. Indeed, the only way for Larkin to head to the Land of 10,000 Lakes may be through a three-way trade.

“The problem is the Wild’s assets are what they are,” Michael Russo reported on The Sheet podcast. “They aren’t going to suddenly magically give up [Matt] Boldy in a Dylan Larkin trade. So unless [the Red Wings] are going to want futures that aren’t sure things, I don’t know how that deal is going to get done. Unless it’s a three-way trade.“

Wild need to convince Detroit, not Larkin

Dealing with a player signed through the 2030-31 NHL season and under a full NMC, the Wild know they must sell their pitch to the Red Wings, not Larkin. In fact, the center needs no further convincing. Larkin wants to move to Minnesota, and he’s made that clear.

However, as much leverage as he currently has, he can’t automatically trade himself to the Wild. He needs the Red Wings to accept an offer so he can waive his clause. That’s where things get tricky. Detroit wants NHL-ready talent in return for Larkin, and Minnesota can’t afford to lose key pieces of its puzzle.

At the end of the day, the Wild are eyeing their first Stanley Cup in franchise history, and giving up too much for Larkin could result in them taking steps backward rather than forward. The most realistic scenario, as things currently stand, appears to be a three-team trade. Still, help would come at a cost for Minnesota, and all eyes across the NHL are fixed on Quinn Hughes.

Speak of the Devils

Anything can happen in the NHL, and the conclusion may not be the most logical. If it were, however, the New Jersey Devils would make a lot of sense. Perhaps they could help out the Wild by providing the assets the Red Wings are after in exchange for Quinn Hughes. It would definitely be an eye for an eye, and then some.

Still, it could happen, especially if the trade for Larkin ends up being delayed until the trade deadline, or if Hughes tells Minnesota he doesn’t plan on re-signing before, during, or after the 2026-27 NHL season.

Faced with the prospect of losing Hughes to free agency in the summer of 2027, the Wild may pull off a wild move. Such desperation may lead the team in Twin Cities to make a pact with the Devils. Make no mistake, the team in Detroit may have wings, but they are no angels, either. Minnesota should keep that in mind when negotiating in the near future. Every organization in the NHL only looks after itself, and no one is a philanthropist.

When Larkin requested a trade out of Detroit after the 2025-26 NHL campaign, he handed Steve Yzerman and the front office a three-team trade list, with reports suggesting a fourth candidate may have been added in the Dallas Stars. However, since then, Yzerman is no longer the Red Wings‘ general manager, and two teams have apparently taken themselves out of the sweepstakes.

According to a report from Michael Russo of The Athletic during an appearance on The Sheet with Jeff Marek podcast, the Florida Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights have no interest in Larkin. That would mean two of the three—or perhaps four—teams Larkin is willing to waive his NMC for aren’t asking him to do so.

Where Panthers, Golden Knights, and Wild stand

The Cats won two Stanley Cups in the last three seasons and made it to three of the last four Stanley Cup Finals. Moreover, the Panthers have their core locked up for the long term, and adding another top-six center in Larkin would be a luxury rather than a necessity.

As for the Golden Knights, they have made it to two of the past four Stanley Cup Finals and won it once. They have more than enough talent to be confident in what they currently put on the ice and may not want to go through the trouble of negotiating with Detroit and its steep asking price.

Minnesota, on the other hand, may have no choice but to go all in on Larkin. Lacking a true top center all these years, the Wild can’t let this chance go to waste, especially when a great candidate actively wants to join them. Whether the Wild could put together an appealing offer is another question.

The Wild are still lurking around Larkin

Larkin’s original three-team trade list included the Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights, and Minnesota Wild. Months after asking Detroit to trade him before the new NHL season, only the latter are showing interest.

However, Minnesota understands nothing can happen until Detroit finds its new general manager. Reports suggest the Red Wings are ready to hire their new GM, but until that actually happens, no one will pick up the phone on the Wild’s calls.

“The Wild still have interest,” Russo, who covers the Wild, reported. “So, [the Wild] have got to see who the [Red Wings’] GM is, and then if the Wild can make some sort of trade.”

Quinn Hughes is Wild’s secret agent

Having close ties with Larkin, Quinn Hughes spends much of his summer skating and practicing with the Michigan native in Ann Arbor, where the U.S. National Team Development Program has its headquarters.

Both Hughes and Larkin are products of the program and became even closer friends while playing for Team USA at the Olympics. (Hughes missed the 4 Nations Face-Off in 2025 due to injury.)

“The Wild are still really holding out hope for Larkin,” Russo stated. “Obviously, [Hughes] has a lot of inside information because he skates with Larkin on a daily basis in Ann Arbor. He knows Larkin’s preference would be to go to Minnesota, Vegas or Florida. But Florida and Vegas right now don’t have interest in him.”

Hughes and Larkin could help each other

Maybe Hughes can help Larkin find his way to the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Doing so would benefit the defenseman as well. Hughes has yet to sign an extension with the Wild, and there’s reason to believe he won’t put pen to paper unless he’s certain Minnesota is a contender for years to come.

The franchise finally landing a first-line center would go a long way. In more ways than one, Larkin and Hughes could help each other out, with the Wild being the biggest beneficiary.

“Aaron Boone said ‘probably’ when asked if Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton will be back before Aaron Judge returns,” Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reported on his X account.

In some ways, Boone’s update shouldn’t come as a surprise. Stanton is reportedly only one step away from being activated and has run the bases recently, while Bellinger continues to prove the Yankees’ original timeline wrong by staying ahead of schedule in his recovery.

NY Yankees await returns

Although the Yankees are managing to stay afloat in the American League Wild Card race, the Bronx Bombers could be walking into trouble, especially if their offensive struggles continue and the Pinstripers remain without Judge, Bellinger, and Stanton.

Asked when to expect the three key injured players back, Boone suggested the order of their returns is trending toward Bellinger, Stanton, and Judge. It makes sense, considering Bellinger has participated in batting practice recently, Stanton is back to running the bases in practice, and Judge has yet to return to baseball activities and was only recently cleared for “light activity.”

Where Bellinger and Stanton stand

During an appearance on Talkin’ Yanks, Boone commented that Bellinger isn’t “too far off,” but is dealing with some tightness. The Yankees won’t take any risks with the three-time All-Star outfielder, so Bellinger won’t be rushed back.

As for Stanton, Boone admitted there’s a scenario in which the 36-year-old requires a rehab assignment, such as the one Luis Gil is going through as he slowly prepares for his return to MLB action.

In his last outing for Aston Villa, Martinez kept a clean sheet as the Villains thrashed Freiburg 3-0 to crown themselves Europa League champions. During warmups for that final, “Dibu” suffered a fracture to the ring finger on his right hand, which prevented him from being at 100% during the 2026 World Cup. However, that’s not why Martinez will miss the UEFA Super Cup against PSG.

Instead, Martinez is still away from the team on vacation after reaching the World Cup final on July 19. Far from being controversial for the team, however, it was agreed upon with head coach Emery, who confirmed that “Dibu” won’t be part of Aston Villa’s starting lineup against PSG—and won’t even be on the squad for the Super Cup.

In addition, English internationals Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins are also on holiday after being part of the Three Lions’ squad that won bronze at the 2026 World Cup. As Emery explained, the three players who reached the latter stages of the tournament were given a four-week break. Aston Villa expect the trio to be back next week.

Maybe it will come back to bite the Villains, who need all the help they can get against European kings PSG. Still, Villa were always going to be underdogs, and this may serve as even more fuel for them.

Who will replace Martinez in goal?

With Martinez unavailable to Emery and his staff, all signs point to Marco Bizot protecting the net for the Villains against the Parisiens. The Dutch goalkeeper appeared in four games for Villa during the 2025-26 UEFA Europa League, all of them during the league phase, and conceded only one goal in a 2-1 win over FC Basel.

If the moves for Pavel Dorofeyev, Sean Durzi, Marcus Pettersson, and Oliver Bjorkstrand pay dividends, and the Blueshirts can mitigate the departures of Vincent Trocheck, Will Borgen, and others, then New York could be in for a rebound year. Who knows? Maybe even the playoffs.

However, there’s also a scenario in which the Rangers spiral out of control and are in for a repeat of last season. That means New York is just as likely to end up with a top-five pick as it is to miss the draft lottery entirely.

Regardless of what happens, the Blueshirts will still need to address the middle of their lineup, especially with the future in mind, as the Rangers lack a proven top-six center for years to come. Not even the buzz that the Rangers are among the frontrunners for Patrik Laine changes that fact.

NY Rangers need help at center

The Rangers currently feature Mika Zibanejad and J.T. Miller anchoring their top two forward lines. For the time being, they are more than enough talent for the Blueshirts to feel confident.

Both Zibanejad and Miller are under contract through the 2029-30 NHL season, and while that locks them down for the medium term in Manhattan, it’s no answer for the truly long term. Moreover, both Zibanejad and Miller are 33 years old, meaning they could be in for a considerable decline in production.

New York needs to inject youth into its top six, especially at center. That’s why a move for a player like Shane Wright would be reasonable, and why it makes sense that New York was reportedly pushed to go after the Seattle Kraken’s 22-year-old center. If that’s not the case, then the draft is the best alternative for the Rangers.

NY Rangers face different options to address center need

Obviously, it will all vary based on where the Rangers finish in the 2026-27 NHL season, but taking the best center available may still be reasonable. The Rangers could wait for their first-round pick next year to develop into an NHL-ready player, as Zibanejad and Miller can carry the top-six workload, for better or worse, in the meantime.

All that matters is that the Blueshirts find their answer. For the time being, Noah Laba isn’t quite at a top-six level, and there are no certainties to fill that role in the organization’s prospect pipeline, either.

Free agency would be another option, but there aren’t many intriguing centers set to become UFAs in the summer of 2027. In 2028, it could be much different, as centers like Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews may become free agents, and fans in New York know just how many times the Rangers have been linked to them. Perhaps it will finally come true.

New York must take action

Still, the Blueshirts must take matters into their own hands rather than speculate about the future of arguably the two biggest faces of the league. In more ways than one, drafting a center with the first-round pick in 2027 is the best decision New York could make, and one that could help Drury keep his job even if the 2026-27 season turns into a disaster in the Big Apple.

As reported by Jordan Schultz, the Giants will host Arnold for a visit on Wednesday. The former first-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft will be at Big Blue’s facilities in East Rutherford, where the G-Men recently resumed training camp after a two-week stay in West Virginia.

Accused of robbery and kidnapping, Arnold turned himself in to authorities on June 24 before being released from custody after posting bond. Detroit released its former first-rounder shortly after. It remains to be seen whether Arnold will be allowed to play in the 2026 NFL season, but the Giants are still doing their due diligence. They are far from alone, though.

Other teams in on Arnold

In addition to the Giants, Schultz’s report indicates that the cornerback has visited the New Orleans Saints, Houston Texans, and Seattle Seahawks. More visits and workouts may be to come as the 23-year-old defensive back out of the University of Alabama explores every option.

All the while, the federal investigation remains active as authorities look into Arnold’s case, in which he’s accused of “orchestrating the abduction and beating of three men whom prosecutors believe he wrongly suspected of having stolen from him,” via ESPN.

For the time being, Arnold has been ordered to remain in home confinement, with exceptions for travel to NFL games, practices, or league-related meetings, as well as legal proceedings. Thus, for the time being, Arnold faces no restrictions as he travels across the U.S. to attend team visits and searches for his next club.

Arnold’s stats

Through his first two years in the NFL, Arnold has played in 24 games, recording one interception, 18 pass deflections, a fumble recovery, and 70 solo tackles. The Lions selected him with the 24th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and signed him to a four-year, $14.3 million contract.

The Penguins are one of the teams that have explored trading for Pettersson, according to NHL Rumour Report. The Los Angeles Kings and Carolina Hurricanes were reportedly others.

While the Penguins could make an intriguing offer, it remains to be seen whether they could come up with a package that the Canucks would accept. Most importantly, though, Pettersson would have to give the green light. Unless that happens, any trade talk surrounding Vancouver’s center would become obsolete.

Complicated trade talks

According to Rick Dhaliwal’s report on Canucks Conversation, Vancouver tried to trade Pettersson during the 2026 NHL Draft, but to no avail. As Dhaliwal noted, “it’s a tough contract to move.”

Pettersson is under contract for the next six seasons, carrying an $11.6 million cap hit. The upcoming three seasons should raise eyebrows for potentially interested teams, as Pettersson will make $37.7 million over the next three years.

That includes an $11 million salary in 2026-27, $14.45 million in 2027-28, and $12.25 million in 2028-29. Throughout the final three years of his contract, his annual salary will drop to $8.7 million. Considering the league’s rising salary cap, that’s figure virtually every team can live with.

Moreover, Pettersson is signed to a full no-movement clause (NMC), meaning he has full control over his future. Unless he waives his clause, the Canucks can’t trade him, no matter how tempting of an offer lands on their table. And it appears Pettersson has no interest in moving out of Vancouver. Maybe only a Stanley Cup contender will make him change his mind. If that’s the case, the Penguins may be up for a steep climb.

Penguins aren’t contenders, at least at first glance

Rolling into the 2026-27 NHL season with the likes of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin still going, the Penguins have reason to be excited after reaching the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season.

However, to call Pittsburgh a championship contender would be a stretch, at least at this point in the offseason. Perhaps the Pens prove everybody wrong come October. Right now, however, betting against them winning the Cup feels like a safer bet.

Crosby is Pittsburgh’s ace

Still, with Crosby in town, the Penguins may make for a compelling argument to lure a player like Pettersson. Both are centers, so the odds of them sharing the ice would be slim, but being teammates and sharing a locker room and off-ice activities is still an attractive thought.

Needless to say, if Pittsburgh hopes to land Pettersson, it will have to make an offer worth Vancouver’s while without giving up too much in return, so that Pettersson remains interested in joining the organization.

As long as Sid the Kid is in the Burgh, however, the franchise in the City of Bridges may be able to connect with any player in search of a new beginning. It remains to be seen whether Pettersson falls into that category, or, at the very least, whether he can be convinced.

Stanton may be getting overlooked by the fanbase in the Bronx. At the moment, fans are too stressed about Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge’s injuries. However, they may have no reason to fret. Bellinger is reportedly proving the Yankees’ injury timeline wrong, while senior vice president and general manager Brian Cashman dropped a bold update on Judge’s return.

Hearing an encouraging update from Bellinger as Judge continues to progress, it appears the storm clouds tormenting Yankee Stadium have moved away, and the sun is finally coming out.. On that note, Stanton’s latest update hints that the good news may be coming in bunches for the Bronx Bombers, and the 36-year-old is only a step away from returning.

“Stanton will be back sooner rather than later,” Emmanuel Barberi reported on the 161st and River Ave podcast. “[Stanton] has been hitting this entire time. The second he starts running bases, [he could be back]. His hitting is at an MLB level right now. You can pop him into the lineup as long as he can base-run.”

Stanton is making progress

As reported by manager Aaron Boone over the past weekend, Stanton has “started the introduction to [running] some bases,” via MLB.com. What exactly that means for his full return to action is unclear, but it should hint that Stanton is on the right track, and his return may be ahead of schedule.

Dealing with a calf strain, Stanton was placed on the 10-day injured list (IL) back in late April and has yet to return. Long absences are nothing new to Stanton, as the Yankees’ designated hitter has now missed 250 games over the last four seasons (not including the current campaign).

Stanton has played in 24 games so far in the 2026 MLB campaign, tallying eight runs, 23 hits, three home runs, and 14 runs batted in (RBI). Additionally, the California native has posted a .256 batting average (AVG), .302 on-base percentage (OBP), .422 slugging percentage (SLG), and .724 OPS.

The small sample size on the year definitely plays a role, but Stanton still ranks fifth in batting average among Yankees batters.

After placing Bellinger on the 10-day injured list (IL) with a Grade 2 hamstring strain in his left leg, the Yankees set a four-to-six-week timeline for Bellinger’s return. A little over two weeks have passed since Bellinger’s injury designation on July 26, and a report suggests Bellinger is already nearing peak competitive form.

“Bellinger is ahead of schedule,” Yankees broadcaster Emmanuel Barberi reported on 161st and River Ave podcast. “I was talking to him, and he’s definitely ahead of schedule. The Yankees are being careful, rightfully so, because they don’t want to re-injure anything. If there was no timeline attached to this, [Bellinger] would be close to [being] back already.”

Learning that Bellinger is on the right track, along with Brian Cashman’s significant update on Aaron Judge’s return, means the best may be yet to come for the Yankees. Maybe it won’t be long before the Pinstripers’ batting order is back to normal.

NY Yankees need Bellinger, but need him healthy

Although Bellinger is sending all the right signals to the Bronx Bombers and appears to be nearing full health, the Yankees will be once bitten, twice shy. If there’s one thing worse than being without Bellinger, it’s having him return only to lose him for even more time, and possibly for good ahead of the MLB postseason.

Thus, Aaron Boone and company will be cautious. For the time being, the Yankees are managing to stay afloat in the postseason race even without Bellinger and Aaron Judge.

Indeed, New York is struggling at the plate, but it still manages to pick up wins against direct opponents. Having the duo back would help, but the Bronx Bombers know all that matters is being healthy by the time October rolls around.

Bellinger’s stats so far

Through 102 appearances in the 2026 MLB campaign, Bellinger has tallied 52 runs, 97 hits, 11 home runs, and 53 runs batted in (RBI). Moreover, the 31-year-old outfielder has posted a .259 batting average, .350 on-base percentage (OBP), .420 slugging percentage (SLG), .770 on-base plus slugging (OPS), and 3.9 wins above replacement (WAR).

After Kiffin’s dramatic departure from the University of Mississippi to take over as the head coach at Louisiana State University, the Tigers have been under the national spotlight. That means they have a lot to prove, and so does Arizona State transfer Leavitt. Although he could have made excuses just in case things don’t pan out, LSU‘s starting quarterback delivered a bold update on his health.

“I’m 100% right now, and I’ve been 100% for the past few months,” Leavitt admitted during a press conference on Monday. “I really don’t think about [the injury when I’m] out on the field. My health is one thing that I take very seriously. So, it was really never a question for me. So, yeah, I’m ready to go.”

Leavitt’s injury

Leavitt suffered a Lisfranc injury to his right foot in October 2025, which led to season-ending surgery. That was all she wrote for his time with the Sun Devils, as he would go on to enter the transfer portal and commit to Kiffin and the Tigers.

During the spring, Leavitt underwent a second procedure to remove the pins from his foot. As Leavitt noted during his media availability, he has no more “hardware” in his right foot and faces no setbacks or hurdles in his return to action.

With him fully healthy, LSU expects Leavitt to start in NCAA‘s Week 1, when the Fighting Tigers take on the Tigers from Clemson at Death Valley—the one in Baton Rouge—in a true battle of namesakes and a competition for bragging rights.

Leavitt’s stats in college

At six-foot-two and as a four-star prospect out of West Linn High School in Oregon, Leavitt has become quite the journeyman in college football. The redshirt junior redshirted his true freshman year at Michigan State, appearing in four games, before transferring to Arizona State, where he led the Sun Devils to a Big 12 Championship.

So far in his NCAA career, Leavitt has completed 376 of 612 passes (61.4 completion percentage) for 4,652 yards and 36 touchdowns. Leavitt has also rushed for 816 yards and 10 touchdowns.

His decision-making and tendency to play hero ball still raise eyebrows, but if there’s a school that can make the most out of such a talent, it’s LSU—and Kiffin is the head coach who can help make that possible.

Whether it’s some bitterness speaking or his most sincere thought, Kelly expects—like everybody around the college football landscape—a dogfight when the Tigers take on the Rebels at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. However, LSU’s former head coach—hired in 2021 and fired in 2025—predicts the home team to come away with the emotional victory.

“I think this really comes down to, you know, what quarterback plays better,” Kelly stated, via On3. “If Trinidad Chambliss plays to the level that we all think he can, this can be a game that Ole Miss beats LSU.”

The Tigers’ former head coach predicted this would be the program’s first loss of the 2026 NCAA campaign—and it may serve as a bucket of ice-cold water for Kiffin and LSU.

Kelly’s record prediction

Although Kelly believes Chambliss gives the University of Mississippi the edge over Sam Leavitt and LSU, his season prediction highlights how Kiffin’s team might recover from an early rude awakening.

Kelly predicted the Tigers to win their next six games after falling to the Rebels, including victories at Auburn and against Alabama. According to the former head coach’s expectations, LSU’s second loss of the campaign will come in Death Valley at the hands of the Texas Longhorns.

“This is difficult. I think that they probably get beat at the end here. I expect that Texas will win this game,” Kelly confessed.

All in all, however, Kelly predicts LSU will finish the 2026 NCAA season with a 10-2 record. With Kiffin’s Tigers’ losses coming against likely ranked teams, they should still make the College Football Playoff and may even make it to the SEC Championship Game.

Still, fans in Baton Rouge may not like the fact that the ex-head coach believes the Tigers will fall in the Magnolia State. The fanbase in Louisiana may not forgive Kelly for it. LSU at Ole Miss is arguably the biggest game of the season, not just for the Tigers and Rebels, but across the entire college football schedule.

According to Bellinger’s latest statement, the Bronx Bombers have reason to be excited. And with Brian Cashman providing an update on Judge’s return to action, the sun may finally be coming out for the Pinstripers. And right on time, as the MLB postseason rises on the horizon.

“I’m feeling good,” Bellinger told media, via RotoBaller, after taking part in batting practice during the weekend series against the Atlanta Braves. “I feel like I’m right on track.“ It appears that Bellinger is proving the Yankees’ injury timeline wrong.

Bellinger’s injury status

Bellinger has been out of the Yankees’ lineup since being placed on the 10-day injured list (IL) on July 26. Dealing with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, it’s been over two weeks since Bellinger suited up for the Pinstripers.

However, he’s ramped up his routine, taking part in batting practice, as well as running and throwing during practice. The initial expectation was for the former MVP and three-time All-Star to miss four to six weeks. Bellinger has been testing that timeline and may be back sooner.

New York will take every precaution, as it understands how valuable Bellinger will be come October, but if the offense continues to struggle as it has as of late, the Yankees may send the star slugger out to the plate sooner. Judge will take longer to get back in action, but both are trending in the right direction, and the Bronx Bombers have reason to believe. Additionally, Giancarlo Stanton seems to be one step away from returning to the Yankees’ lineup.

NY Yankees struggling without Bellinger and Judge

For the time being, the pitching rotation of Cam Schlittler, Max Fried, and Gerrit Cole will have to keep up their good work. With the headaches at the plate, New York’s best shot right now is by putting itself in low-scoring games.

So far, so good. But the sooner players like Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Trent Grisham can wake up, the better. If not, the Yankees may be left out to dry, waiting for Bellinger and Judge’s heroic returns while letting superb performances at the mound go to waste.

Thus, that is something to keep an eye on as Quinn Hughes makes up his mind. According to a report, the eldest sibling is keen on re-signing in Minnesota, but only if he gets to choose the term of his contract, putting him on track to become an unrestricted free agent in the same year Jack will become one in the NHL.

“I have believed that Quinn Hughes is going to sign [a three-year, $18 million AAV contract] in Minnesota,” Elliotte Friedman stated on NHL Tonight. “People are starting to wonder, what’s going on here. I don’t have any panic about it yet.”

Three-year deal would align Quinn and Jack’s contracts

With Quinn Hughes entering the final year of his six-year, $47.1 million contract, he is set to become a UFA in the summer of 2027. Thus, if he were to put pen to paper on a three-year extension with the Wild, he would postpone his UFA status until 2030.

That year is far from random. Jack Hughes will become a UFA in the summer of 2030, as well. The New Jersey Devils‘ star is signed to an eight-year, $64 million contract running through the 2029-30 campaign.

If Friedman’s estimation is correct and Quinn signs to stay in Minnesota for the next three seasons, then he and Jack could hit the market in 2030 determined to find a team that will have them both. Quinn will be 30 years old in the summer of 2030, while Jack will have recently turned 29.

Other alternatives

There is also the possibility that Quinn decides next season is his last in Minnesota and hopes to sign with the Devils in free agency, getting to play with Jack and Luke as well. If that were the case, the Wild would likely trade Hughes—Quinn has no trade protection—before the deadline to get something in return.

The Devils would be among the suitors, but they could also let Quinn be a rental for another playoff team and go after him in free agency. However, reports state that Quinn wants to show his gratitude to the Wild for pursuing him when he asked out of Vancouver and offer his services for a few more years in the Twin Cities.

Options abound, but it’s clear the Hughes brothers saga will be one to watch as the 2026-27 NHL season looms closer. If Hughes is unsigned by the time the puck drops, then the drama will truly skyrocket.

According to Herb Zurkowsky from the Montreal Gazette, the Rangers are one of the teams linked to Laine ever since free agency began in the NHL on July 1. Over a month has passed and not much progress has been made, but the Blueshirts could still be looking into the veteran winger.

When it comes to Laine, such a slow-cooking process was to be expected. Laine only played five games for the Canadiens last season and underwent core muscle surgery, so there are a lot of questions that need answering before any team makes him a contract offer.

If the once-lethal sniper can brush those concerns aside and prove himself, he could be an intriguing addition for a team like New York. That’s still a big if, and at a time when the Blueshirts need to bring certainties onto the roster rather than more question marks.

Do the Rangers need Laine?

Laine would bring many questions of his own if he were to sign in Manhattan. He has appeared in just 75 games over the past three seasons, which should raise concerns for any front office and coaching staff. However, there may be reason to believe the rest he had throughout the 2025-26 NHL campaign could pay off. Maybe Laine could come into the 2026-27 season energized. And for the Rangers, he could be a key addition.

Realistically, if he is at his best, Laine could be a 15-to-25-goal player for New York. As things stand, a third-line role would work best for both sides, with Laine also chiming in on the power play, where his sniper’s abilities would make him a headache for opponents.

However, it’s all potential. Everybody in the NHL knows what Laine is capable of in his prime; the gist of the problem is that Laine seems long gone from his peak form. It might take some time to get Laine back to playing with confidence, and an anxious market like New York may not give him that luxury. If the price is right, the Blueshirts could add Laine on a prove-it deal. The Rangers aren’t the only ones with that line of thought, however.

Maple Leafs showing interest

As reported by Zurkowsky, the Toronto Maple Leafs are another team interested in Laine. The Leafs’ appearance is unsurprising, considering they’ve been linked to Laine for some time now.

Still, it’s noteworthy that the interest remains the same despite the recent front-office overhaul in Hogtown. The Minnesota Wild, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Philadelphia Flyers are other franchises reportedly considering Laine.

Yzerman is no longer at the helm, yet Larkin is digging his heels in after asking out. However, with no team willing to match Detroit’s high asking price, the Red Wings face a major problem in trade talks. According to a report, the Red Wings’ best option is to make amends with their captain. How realistic that is, however, is another question.

“The best course still seems to be a reconciliation,” Helene St. James wrote on an article on Detroit Free Press about the Red Wings’ situation with Larkin. St. James also noted how cap-friendly Larkin’s contract is, and all signs point to retaining Larkin being much wiser than parting with the captain.

Larkin won’t budge, at least for now

Unfortunately for the Red Wings, their captain has made up his mind—or so it seems. Larkin is tired of missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs and signing up for déjà vu season after season. However, Larkin was also sick and tired of the direction the front office took and its approach to trade deadlines and free agency.

With Yzerman gone from his role as general manager and a new hire on deck, Detroit could take a significant step toward a peaceful solution with its upset star. That’s another reason why the Red Wings won’t trade Larkin until a new GM is in place.

That, and the fact that assistant GM Shawn Horcoff (currently handling day-to-day tasks) doesn’t have access to the red button that could complete the blockbuster trade ahead of the 2026-27 NHL campaign.

Red Wings may avoid trading Larkin

As long as Larkin is signed to a contract in Motor City, the Winged Wheel will keep at least one bit of hope. If no suitable offer comes through, the Wings will explore the options that are actually up to them, and it’s clear which is the best alternative.

If Larkin walks back his trade request, it would still take some time for him to rebuild his relationship with the devoted fan base, but that’s a problem for future Larkin.

For the time being, the Red Wings must take things one step at a time. Finding their next GM is paramount, as it will go a long way toward either making a truce with Larkin or burning that bridge to the ground.

“It’s clear that it’s a disadvantage; you don’t have to be [Albert] Einstein to realize it. The home team is waiting for you at their own place, with their own beds, meals and schedules. Obviously, it takes a physical toll,” Abreu said in response to Bolavip during a press conference on Saturday.

Although San Diego is only across the US-Mexico border for Tijuana, the Xolos first had to travel to Texas to play Austin in their debut at the 2026 Leagues Cup. Needless to say, it wasn’t a good start, as it put Abreu’s team with its back against the wall.

Abreu wants Tijuana to be cautious

Only a win will do for Tijuana against San Diego FC as the Xolos are playing for survival in the 2026 Leagues Cup. After losing to Austin in the opener, the Xolos can’t afford another defeat, and even a tie could be enough to eliminate them.

With everything on the line, Abreu still wants his team to be wary, as there is a long Liga MX season ahead. Perhaps because the tournament lacks prestige or Mexican teams believe they are at a disadvantage, the Xolos’ head coach didn’t show much urgency.

“We have to take precautions for when domestic league play resumes, but we should enjoy it and, above all, let the young players gain these experiences, which are fantastic for them,” Abreu stated in response to Bolavip.

Tijuana’s Leagues Cup schedule

After the 2-0 loss in the debut against Austin, Tijuana take on San Diego FC (Aug. 9) on the road before closing the first round of the 2026 Leagues Cup on Aug. 13 when they visit the Portland Timbers. Only days later, Liga MX action will resume and the Xolos are scheduled to go head to head with Cruz Azul on Aug. 17.

Missing their best player and the best in the world, Messi, Inter Miami struggled to create many chances against Monterrey. No one could break the deadlock until De Paul unleashed a rocket of a shot from outside the box, finding the bottom-right corner of the net to open the scoring in the Herons’ second game of the 2026 Leagues Cup.

As soon as the ball went in, De Paul removed his shirt. However, instead of showing off his tattoo-filled physique, the Argentine was wearing Messi‘s jersey underneath. De Paul turned his back to the stands and pointed to the number and name on his undershirt, sending a clear message of support to his best friend, who lost his father on Saturday.

On a day when Inter Miami mourned Jorge Messi’s passing, De Paul delivered a tribute that appeared to be taken straight out of a movie script.

De Paul was booked

Although he was wearing another jersey underneath, De Paul still removed one of his shirts after scoring against Monterrey. As a result, he was shown a yellow card by the referee.

Even though it was still early in the game and getting booked with most of the match left to play carried a risk, De Paul clearly couldn’t care less about the card and was going to honor Messi and his family regardless. Had De Paul scored later while already on a yellow card, he most likely would’ve removed his jersey anyway.

Some things are bigger than soccer, and De Paul made that clear with one of the most emotional moments of the season.

Meant to be

The fact that De Paul was wearing Messi’s jersey underneath his own shows just how confident he was that he would score and get a chance to honor his friend’s family.

De Paul doesn’t score often, which makes it all the more magical. That he scored tonight, of all games, and in the fashion he did made the moment even more special.

In more ways than one, it was reminiscent of one of Messi’s most iconic celebrations, when he wore Diego Armando Maradona’s jersey underneath his own Barcelona shirt days after the Argentine icon passed away in 2020.

Asked by Bolavip what facing Lozano would’ve meant for him—as “Tonio” Rodriguez and “Chucky” have been teammates before—the Xolos’ netminder sent his fellow countryman a special message. Moreover, he spoke about what a pity it was that Mora and Lozano couldn’t have starred in a Mexican present-vs.-future showdown.

“With [Lozano], I had the opportunity to play alongside him with the national team, so I know him well. He is a tremendous player, with great talent and quality. Of course, for the fans, it would have been a dream to see,” Rodriguez said in response to Bolavip during a press conference on Saturday.

“(…) a player who gave so many people hope, go up against this new star who is emerging in [Mora]. It would have been a match between the past and the present, or the present and the future. But, well, it didn’t happen that way.”

Rodriguez speaks on Lozano’s fresh start

Though watching from the other side of the border, Rodriguez shared San Diego FC’s Mikey Varas and Alejandro Alvarado’s happiness about Lozano getting to play “somewhere he can be himself.” The 34-year-old goalkeeper sent his former teammate a sincere message of joy.

“At the end of the day, I’m happy that ‘Chucky’ has an opportunity to play and that a place has been found for him. Because at the end of the day, the most important thing for soccer players is to be on the field,” Rodriguez stated.

“I’m happy that his situation has been resolved, and I wish him the greatest success because I know he will do very well. It would have been nice to have that matchup. The fans would have loved it, but it didn’t happen.”

Rodriguez dreams of national team call-up

During the press conference, Rodriguez was asked whether he still aimed to be called up to Mexico’s national team, even at 34, and the veteran netminder made his stance clear. As long as he is playing professional soccer, representing his home country will always be the goal. Certainly, it’s something for national team head coach Rafa Marquez to keep an eye on.

“[Lozano] was always a good teammate. Obviously, we are happy for him that he found somewhere he could keep playing,” Alejandro Alvarado said in response to Bolavip during Saturday’s press conference. “We are excited for him, we send him our well wishes, and we’re happy that he found somewhere he can play and just be himself.”

After appearing in more than 30 games for San Diego FC in 2025, scoring 11 goals and adding another eight assists, Lozano lost ground on the roster and hasn’t played at all during the 2026 season. Not in MLS nor the Leagues Cup. Clearly, his days in “America’s Finest City” were numbered. After much speculation, he was sent to the LA Galaxy on loan.

Mikey Varas opens up on Lozano’s loan

Because he was rarely used by Varas and his staff, Lozano’s exit from San Diego may have little impact on the squad, and Varas made that clear. When asked by Bolavip about Lozano’s loan deal, Varas sent a clear message.

“I’m happy that there’s a solution for the club and for [Lozano]. I’ve always said that he could continue his career,” Varas told Bolavip during Saturday’s Leagues Cup pre-match press conference.

“And his departure doesn’t affect the group at all because we’ve done all of this season according to our plan, and we’re ready. The most important thing now is to focus on this game, go out there and win in front of our fans.”

Potential Lozano-San Diego reunion

As Lozano vies to make the most of his new opportunity in Los Angeles, he already knows when he could meet with his former head coach, teammates, and club during the 2026 MLS campaign.

San Diego FC will host the LA Galaxy on Aug. 29. It remains to be seen whether Lozano will earn a starting role in the City of Angels, but it’s clear he will have his potential return to Snapdragon Stadium circled in red on his calendar.

According to Elliotte Friedman, the Red Wings are considering Jeffrey Greenberg to become their next general manager. Ilitch knows Greenberg personally, as the latter is currently the Tigers’ general manager.

While hiring a current MLB executive may sound surprising, Greenberg has NHL experience, having served as an associate general manager with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2022.

Detroit knows how much pressure there is to get its 13th general manager hire right, and perhaps the significance of the number adds to that pressure. Maybe Greenberg is the right call, even if it’s one alternative not many saw coming.

Tigers haven’t had much more success

Although Greenberg could turn out to be the solution for the Red Wings, his last few months at the helm of the Tigers haven’t been particularly kind to him. Recently, the Red Wings’ ownership set a bad precedent amid the Larkin rumors, and it was because the Tigers parted with their best pitcher ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

Greenberg did help the Tigers reach the postseason—which the Red Wings haven’t achieved in any season under Yzerman—but failed to win more than one round in any playoff appearance. Moreover, Greenberg’s 2026 season with the Tigers was far from memorable. Still, the hope remains that he can have better luck in the NHL with the Red Wings.

Reports state that Larkin’s trade request sparked a major front-office overhaul in Detroit, with the organization steering toward more analytics-driven staff, and that’s something Greenberg would check the box on. After all, he arrived in Detroit because of his analytics-based approach, and it could be the reason he gets a new job just blocks away from his current workplace.

Ilitch faces crucial decision

After the passing of his father, Mike Ilitch, in 2017, Chris Ilitch took over as the principal owner of the Red Wings. In 2019, he made his first big call, naming Steve Yzerman as general manager. Seven years later, his patience ran out.

Yzerman will still serve as an advisor to Ilitch, but the owner believes it’s time to make a sharp turn. Needless to say, Yzerman’s tenure has left much to be desired, and Ilitch understands he must right his wrong with his next GM decision.

Suarez was handed a six-game suspension after spitting on a Seattle Sounders staff member following the 2025 Leagues Cup final, in which Inter Miami fell 3-0. While several players were involved in a brawl and walked away without punishment, Suarez crossed a red line.

Although the Herons hoped an appeal would reduce the suspension, it was to no avail. As a result, Suarez will have to serve his entire ban in the Leagues Cup, and the Herons will have to make do with what they have.

Suarez is suspended for entire 2026 Leagues Cup

Because the veteran striker was handed a six-game ban and Inter Miami could play a maximum of six games in the 2026 Leagues Cup, Suarez would miss every outing should the Herons make it all the way to the final.

Guillermo Hoyos, Lionel Messi, and Inter Miami were well aware of Suarez’s suspension entering the tournament. Whether they agree with the organizers’ ban or not, the Herons have accepted their situation. If they want to make noise in the cross MLS-Liga MX competition, they will have to figure out a way to fill Suarez’s void.

However, there is also a scenario in which Suarez’s suspension carries on to the 2027 Leagues Cup—provided the Herons qualify to next year’s tournament.

What would happen if Inter Miami fall before the final

If the Herons are eliminated before the final, Suarez could have to serve the remaining games of his suspension during next year’s tournament. Moreover, if Inter Miami are knocked out in the round-robin stage, Suarez will miss the entire first round of the 2027 tournament as well.

Should the Herons fail to advance to the knockout stage next year, the Uruguayan could miss two entire Leagues Cups in a row. That may be looking too far ahead, though, as Suarez is under contract through 2026, but his future beyond that remains uncertain.

2026 Leagues Cup format for Inter Miami

Inter Miami will play three Liga MX teams—Atletico San Luis, Monterrey, and Leon—in the first round. If they rank among the top four MLS teams, the Herons will advance to the knockout stage. The elimination round begins with the quarterfinals and is played as single-leg knockout games, meaning Inter Miami could play up to six games.

“The Red Wings and Wild previously talked without finding common ground. The Red Wings aren’t enamored with the younger players the Wild are willing to give up,” as reported by Kevin Allen on Detroit Hockey Now.

Although the Red Wings have put Larkin’s trade on hold for the time being and are focused on their search for a new general manager, they have made their asking price clear.

Red Wings’ asking price for Larkin

While draft selections would come in handy, what Detroit is really after are NHL-ready players who can replace Larkin and replicate his production. The Winged Wheel has little interest in acquiring prospects who are still wet behind the ears. At least that was the plan before Steve Yzerman stepped down from his role as GM.

As things stand, Minnesota lacks the type of assets that would convince Detroit to green-light a deal. At least for the time being, there’s no chance the Wild part with any of Matt Boldy, Brock Faber, or Quinn Hughes.

However, given enough time, much could change. The fact that reports suggest Larkin could start the season with the Red Wings might actually be a good sign for a potential blockbuster trade.

Potential deadline trade between three teams

The Wild have made it clear they want—and hope—to re-sign Hughes as soon as possible. However, the delay in reaching an extension has created uncertainty. If the eldest of the three Hughes brothers enters the 2026-27 NHL season without a new deal, speculation will only intensify.

Minnesota’s need for a top-six center isn’t going away, and it could all lead to a blockbuster three-team trade involving the Red Wings, Wild, and New Jersey Devils. The organization in Newark knows that if Quinn Hughes reaches unrestricted free agency next summer, he’ll most likely be waiting for the Devils’ call.

However, there’s no guarantee he’ll make it that far. Minnesota will do everything it can to convince Hughes to stay, but if all else fails, the Wild could trade him before the deadline. Hughes’ expiring contract doesn’t include any form of trade protection, meaning Minnesota is free to shop him.

Such a trade will take time

All in all, every moving piece of this intriguing puzzle could fall into place and produce a three-team trade unlike anything the league has seen before. Larkin could still end up in Minnesota before the trade deadline. Quinn Hughes could reunite with his brothers at the Prudential Center, and the Red Wings could walk away with NHL-ready talent from both the Wild and the Devils.

It’s an extremely complicated scenario that hinges on far too many factors. Still, it may be the perfect storm. All it would take is patience. And even though Larkin wants to leave Detroit, he may be willing to wait a little longer. After all, the 30-year-old center must measure twice and cut once—and so must the Red Wings.

“There’s a lot of gravity to [Kane’s] presence. There’s huge value in that, but there are also some elements that, if the players aren’t prepared, they might be watching him a little too much. And they haven’t figured out what works for them or gotten comfortable in their own skin,” Davidson said during an appearance on CHGO Blackhawks.

Adding a seasoned NHL star like Kane could create a dilemma for the Blackhawks. Up until now, Chicago had stuck to its rebuilding plan—even if it had little to show for it. For better or worse, landing Kane was a massive shift in the status quo.

Double-edged signing for Blackhawks

Signing Kane is seen by some as the Blackhawks going back on their word and abandoning their previous approach. It doesn’t have to be that way, however. Only time will tell, though.

If Kane is willing to help the young squad in whatever role Jeff Blashill and company ask of him, his presence may bring nothing but positives. However, if the team can’t adapt to Kane—or vice versa—it could erase all the progress the Hawks made, especially late in the 2025-26 NHL season.

Kane’s presence could affect team at times

That’s easier said than done, and having Kane on the ice could lead players to force passes just to get him the puck. That’s one of the things Davidson and the organization hope to avoid. Kane is just another teammate, even if he was a childhood hero to many of Chicago’s young players.

It’s an intriguing aspect of “Showtime’s” return to the Windy City and something to keep an eye on heading into training camp and the regular season.

As a result, the Giants are making changes in 2026. Adapting to today’s NFL, New York understands that the “Tush Push,” or quarterback sneak, is one of the most effective plays in short-yardage situations when executed properly. The Giants’ division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, have mastered it, and Big Blue is looking to take a page out of its rival’s playbook—but not without a twist.

Instead of placing Dart under center, as the Eagles do with Jalen Hurts, New York will utilize a different position player, one Harbaugh has a great deal of confidence in. As reported by Bobby Skinner of Giants Nation Show, the Giants practiced the “Tush Push” with Patrick Ricard at quarterback.

Why the decision makes sense

The veteran fullback spent his entire NFL career in Baltimore before joining New York. Considering how long he’s known Harbaugh and how effective he can be in short-yardage situations, it’s no surprise he could become the Giants’ option for quarterback sneak plays.

More importantly, it would keep Dart from launching himself headfirst into the trenches. When it comes to the sophomore out of Ole Miss, any opportunity the Giants have to keep him out of harm’s way is a win. Harbaugh and the Giants still expect Dart to put his mobility to good use throughout the 2026 NFL season, but acknowledge that quarterback sneaks would be an unnecessary risk.

Plus, several teams around the league take their quarterbacks off the field—or at least away from the football—when calling those plays. Usually, a tight end replaces the starting quarterback in those situations, but a fullback can be just as effective. If every team had a fullback like Ricard, they would all consider him a better option than risking their franchise quarterback.

Concerns around Dart’s health

Although Dart was diagnosed with a concussion only once during his rookie season, he underwent several concussion evaluations throughout the year. Many of the hits to the head he took came on avoidable plays, raising questions about his playing style and how long he could sustain it.

Heading into his sophomore campaign, it’s clear Harbaugh and his staff are keeping a close eye on Dart’s tendencies and medical history. Fortunately for Dart and New York, Harbaugh has plenty of experience after working with Lamar Jackson over the past several years.

If Harbaugh can get similar production on the ground from Dart while reducing the injury risk, the sky’s the limit for the Giants. But if Dart can’t stay healthy, the G-Men won’t be able to spread their wings.

A move has yet to be made, and reports hint Larkin could start the 2026-27 NHL season in Detroit. Regardless, the captain reportedly isn’t backing down. Even though the Red Wings have put trade talks involving Larkin on hold, the 30-year-old center remains determined to be traded.

“Dylan Larkin has not budged on the request to be traded that he made shortly after the season ended,” Helene St. James reported on an article on Detroit Free Press. The ball is in the Red Wings‘ court, but they have no urgency to figure out a trade. At least, not as long as they are still searching for a new general manager to take over after Steve Yzerman.

Larkin’s trade rumors dwindle

Deep in the NHL offseason and with a very limited list of potential destinations, it’s only natural for the trade buzz surrounding Larkin to quiet down. That doesn’t mean he’s changed his mind, that the Red Wings have convinced him to stay, or anything of the sort.

The fact Detroit’s front office is undergoing significant changes doesn’t help, either. It’s difficult for teams to call Motor City when it’s unclear who will pick it up, and whether it is authorized to discuss potential trades.

As a result, and because the 2026-27 NHL season still feels a long way off, franchises are under no urgency to work out a deal. Larkin may be the only one feeling anxious, as he’d likely prefer to know where he’ll be playing as soon as possible.

Larkin holds the cards to his future

Regardless, he holds the upper hand with his no-movement clause (NMC), which essentially allows him to choose his next destination. If a team on his trade list makes an offer Detroit can accept, it will be up to the center to waive his no-movement clause and head to the airport.

A few months ago, when the trade request first became public, many thought Larkin would be wise to have his bags packed. Now, he might as well unpack—if he ever packed his things in the first place—and wait patiently.

His departure from Detroit has taken longer than expected, and it may take even longer. One thing appears clear, however: Larkin will leave Motor City sooner or later.

Larkin’s stats in Detroit

Ever since he was selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, Larkin has been a cornerstone of the Red Wings. He was a fan favorite right up until he requested a trade, leaving the organization in a difficult position.

Still, his impact is undeniable—even if he helped the team reach the postseason only once. Through 808 games, Larkin has recorded 276 goals and 367 assists for a total of 643 points. Surprisingly, he owns a plus/minus of -100 during his time in Detroit.
