According to ESPN, the Yankees are open to parting with relief pitcher Camilo Doval. However, they would prefer to replace him rather than simply subtract a right-handed arm from their bullpen in the middle of the 2026 MLB season. As a result, many have pointed to Mets reliever Luke Weaver, who may be open to a change of scenery that wouldn’t require much of a fresh start.

“Luke Weaver. He is the reliever the [Yankees] need,” as commented by Jimmy O’Brien on Talkin’ Yanks. “The Yankees need someone who can replace Doval, someone who can get [right-handed batters] out. Go get him, the Yankees fixed [Weaver], go rescue him.”

Weaver could be back with Yankees

After claiming Weaver off waivers in 2023, the Yankees unlocked the reliever’s potential. Weaver went on to post two strong seasons in the Bronx, including a career year in 2024, when he recorded a 2.89 ERA and struck out 103 batters. Weaver signed with the Mets as a free agent ahead of the 2026 MLB season.

Although his production has been as good as expected, the Mets are struggling and appear to be trending toward becoming sellers at the trade deadline. Doing business with the organization in the Bronx is hardly an appealing option for the Mets, but the return could make it worthwhile.

For the Yankees, just how much they would be willing to give up for Weaver remains to be seen. Regardless, having to address the void left by Bellinger‘s injury certainly doesn’t help. Still, the Yankees are usually cunning enough to figure their way around trade deadlines.

Another thing to keep an eye on

Weaver isn’t the only Mets pitcher gaining traction ahead of the trade deadline. In fact, another arm generating buzz also happens to be a former Yankee. The Chicago White Sox have been linked to Clay Holmes in a move that could influence the odds of Weaver being traded.

Although Holmes has become a starting pitcher in Queens, he previously worked as a reliever in the Bronx. The chances of the Mets moving both pitchers seem slim, but nothing can be ruled out.

Weaver’s contract

Although Weaver is drawing plenty of interest ahead of the trade deadline, the Mets may not be in any rush to move him out of Queens. The 32-year-old is signed to a two-year, $22 million contract through 2027. Under that deal, Weaver is set to earn $9.5 million this season, followed by a $12.5 million salary in 2027, according to Spotrac.

Perhaps the Mets would prefer to trade him to avoid paying the larger portion of the contract, but parting with one of their top relievers—especially if it means strengthening the Yankees’ World Series hopes—may come with a price tag too steep for any interested team.

In the past, the Rangers have seen young players wear down under lofty expectations right from the start. With Smits, New York wants to get it right, and reports indicate Mike Sullivan and company are setting a clear ceiling for him. The higher a rookie flies, the harder the fall can be, and the Blueshirts want to avoid that scenario.

“The third-pair left defense spot is probably the highest Smits would get with a fully healthy defensive corps. That would bump Matthew Robertson to the extra defenseman,” Peter Baugh wrote on The Athletic.

NY Rangers addressed their defense

It was one of the main issues fans wanted fixed ahead of the 2026-27 NHL season. On paper, the Rangers have accomplished their goal. Their blue line now features several new faces while retaining cornerstone pieces like Adam Fox and Vladislav Gavrikov.

If the Rangers are serious about their new team identity—one built around Igor Shesterkin’s long-term commitment and a strong defensive foundation—then this offseason has them moving in the right direction. With the additions of Marcus Pettersson and Sean Durzi, along with the re-signing of Braden Schneider, even if only on a one-year deal, New York’s defensive corps is set.

NY Rangers plan to give Smits time

Whether Smits breaks out in training camp or needs more time, the Rangers aren’t burdening their first-round pick with sky-high expectations from day one. Sure, they’d like to see encouraging progress from the Latvian teenager, but they knew they were making a developmental selection when they turned in his name at the 2026 NHL Draft.

Smits could be in the lineup on opening night of the 2026-27 NHL season or begin the year in the AHL with the Hartford Wolf Pack, and the Rangers would likely be satisfied with either outcome. New York would love for Smits to suddenly blossom into an NHL regular and put up Matthew Schaefer-like numbers as a rookie, but that’s unrealistic—even in a city like the Big Apple.

At the end of the day, Smits is only 18 years old, and his only games in North America have come while representing Latvia at the 2025 IIHF U18 World Championship and the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship. The Rangers have made mistakes in the past, but they appear determined not to repeat them in the way they develop their top selection from the 2026 NHL Draft.

“I think that eventually Nicklas Lidstrom will be involved in some type of management capacity,” Jeff Marek commented on the Sekeres & Price podcast.

Considering Lidstrom is currently Detroit’s vice president of hockey operations, there’s reason to believe he could take over the reins as general manager. Lidstrom was appointed as VP of hockey ops in Jan. 2022, and a promotion might be in order for the 56-year-old ahead of the 2026-27 NHL campaign.

Red Wings face key decisions

While Larkin makes the Red Wings speculate about his trade list, the franchise still has to determine who will serve as general manager heading into the 2026-27 NHL season. Yzerman has stepped down in a move reportedly made to convince Larkin to stay in Detroit, leaving the position vacant.

Without a sitting general manager, the Red Wings have had to put several key decisions on hold. Among them is Alex DeBrincat’s future. Although reports indicate DeBrincat won’t follow Larkin’s lead and request a trade, the uncertainty is driving fans crazy, as the team’s leading goal scorer isn’t under contract beyond next summer.

Needless to say, Lidstrom—or whoever is ultimately appointed as the next general manager—will have to tackle these issues immediately. A lot is on the line for Detroit, and there is little time to waste.

Lidstrom’s résumé

Just like Yzerman, Lidstrom spent his entire NHL career with the Red Wings and helped shape the best years in franchise history since the Original Six era ended. Lidstrom wore the Wings’ sweater for 20 seasons, leading the club to four Stanley Cups (1997, 1998, 2002, and 2008).

Although the “Yzerplan” didn’t quite work out for Detroit, the Red Wings may believe Lidstrom can get the organization over the hump and back where it belongs. Whether Lidstrom will actually be promoted to general manager remains to be seen, and such a decision could draw mixed opinions among the fan base.

At the end of the day, no one can dispute Lidstrom’s NHL résumé as one of the greatest defensemen in league history. However, as an executive, his fingerprints are also all over a team that has now missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for 10 consecutive seasons.

Red Wings must snap playoff drough

As a player, Lidstrom never missed the postseason. As vice president of hockey operations, he has yet to help Detroit get back there. Whether that is a fair evaluation or not is up for debate, but the numbers are there. Just as they paint a clear picture of his success on the ice, they also illustrate how difficult things have been for the Red Wings’ front office in recent years.

Therefore, the fit simply makes perfect sense. Obviously, the Giants would have to part with significant assets to strike a deal with the Buccaneers, but the door is open.

Moreover, New York would have to foot the bill for at least a large portion of Vea’s salary in the 2026 NFL season, while also absorbing his cap hit. There are certainly hurdles standing in the way, but when the reward is arguably the best possible replacement for Lawrence, it could all be worth it.

“You have a quarterback on a rookie contract. This is the period of time you’re supposed to swing trades for 31 year old Pro Bowl defensive tackles looking for one last pay day. Vita Vea to the Giants makes too much sense,” Shaun Morash of Talkin’ Giants posted on his X account.

Why Vea could be perfect addition

Speaking of the best nose tackles in the NFL, it’s impossible not to mention Vea and Lawrence. So, after the latter asked out of New York and joined the Cincinnati Bengals, what better way to fill that void than by bringing in the player he has so often been compared to?

Indeed, the G-Men have been busy this offseason. They added several pieces to the interior of the defensive line in an attempt to make up for Lawrence’s glaring absence, but they could still find room for Vea alongside newly arrived D.J. Reader and Shelby Harris.

Moreover, as Morash pointed out, the Giants have Dart under a rookie contract through the 2028 NFL season and can exercise his fifth-year option for 2029. If there has ever been a time for Big Blue to go all in on a move for a veteran Pro Bowler, it’s now.

NY Giants can make it happen

Vea wants to get paid, and New York can foot the bill. Whether Vea wants to join the Giants, though, is a different question. Some reports indicate that he would like to return to his home state of California—or at least be closer to his roots on the West Coast.

Still, if there’s one place in the world that can make players overlook homesickness, it’s New York City. Plus, Vea’s contract has no trade clauses working in his favor to steer his way to his preferred destination.

At the end of the day, if Tampa Bay trades him, it will likely be to the highest bidder, and that could very well be New York if the Giants are truly interested in adding a 6-foot-4, 347-pound force to the interior of their defensive line.

Nabers can now gradually practice with his teammates under the coaching staff’s supervision. If he continues to progress as he has so far, there is little reason to be concerned about him missing the Giants‘ home opener against their NFC East rivals, the Cowboys.

“It will be a gradual process for Nabers and, barring any setbacks, it’s fair to be optimistic that he’ll be in the lineup against the Cowboys,” as reported by Dan Duggan on The Athletic. “The Giants are hoping Nabers’ earlier start to practice this summer has him ready for Week 1.”

NY Giants’ probable offense

Should Nabers be cleared to play from the outset of the 2026 NFL season, John Harbaugh could have an exciting offense at his disposal when the Giants take on the Cowboys at home. In addition to Nabers, Cam Skattebo’s health will be another storyline to monitor, but if both are available, Jaxson Dart will have the opportunity to pick up right where he left off.

Provided everyone stays healthy, the Giants’ offensive skill-position starters could be: Dart at quarterback, Skattebo at running back, Nabers as the primary wide receiver, followed by Darius Slayton and Calvin Austin III, with Isaiah Likely at tight end.

Considering Harbaugh’s style, the team could also lean on 12 personnel, taking a wide receiver off the field and pairing Theo Johnson with Likely at tight end.

Nabers’ medical history

Nabers has been out since tearing the ACL and meniscus in his right knee last season. The injury cut his sophomore NFL campaign short in just Week 4. Since then, Nabers’ recovery has been slow, and the road has been filled with hurdles.

During the offseason, a “clean-up” surgery to remove scar tissue raised alarms in East Rutherford, as the health concerns surrounding New York’s top receiving option suffered another setback in his expected recovery timeline.

Long time away for Nabers

Still, the NFL offseason is longer than that of any other major North American sport. That extra time has proven beneficial for both the Giants and Nabers. Even now, with training camp set to begin, the G-Men can afford to remain patient with their No. 1 wide receiver, as there is still time before the hourglass runs out and the season opens with a pivotal divisional clash against America’s Team.

How Nabers will look once he returns to the field after such a long layoff remains to be seen, but New York’s coaching and medical staffs are optimistic, while also being careful not to rush their best playmaker back. Even though it has been 10 months since the season-ending injury at MetLife Stadium, the Giants have no intention of taking unnecessary risks with Nabers.

“With Shesterkin and their defense, I think they’re going to be competing for the Jennings Trophy for the lowest goals against in the league. That’s what, to me, it looks like the Rangers are trying to do this year,” former NHL goalie Martin Byron stated on Rangers Recon podcast.

Whether the Rangers can truly become one of the NHL‘s best teams at shutting down opponents during the 2026-27 season may ultimately come down to Shesterkin’s performance. And if Sullivan and company want this blueprint to work over the long term, they need their star goaltender to be certain he wants to see out his contract in Manhattan.

Shesterkin’s future

So far, so good, but the speculation surrounding Shesterkin’s future remains loud, and another disappointing season may be the final straw for him. Shesterkin is entering the second year of his eight-year, $92.48 million contract.

On paper, being signed through 2033 on the richest contract ever handed to an NHL goaltender should leave little doubt that the Russian netminder is in New York City to stay. However, crazier things have happened, and if Shesterkin decides he wants out of New York, he can choose his destination thanks to his full no-movement clause (NMC).

A franchise like the Florida Panthers has long been mentioned as a potential landing spot, and if things don’t improve for the Rangers anytime soon, Shesterkin may very well decide to find out whether the grass really is greener elsewhere.

NY Rangers’ new defense

As badly as things went for the Blueshirts last season, they still finished in the upper half of the league in goals allowed. New York ranked 15th after allowing 249 goals in 82 games, or an average of 3.04 goals per outing.

Obviously, the fact that the Rangers ranked 10th worst in goals scored (2.87 goals per game) didn’t help and goes a long way toward explaining why they lost far more games than they won.

Heading into the 2026-27 campaign, however, things are looking up. New York’s revamped defensive corps includes Adam Fox, Vladislav Gavrikov, Marcus Pettersson, Sean Durzi, Braden Schneider, Urho Vaakanainen, and Matthew Robertson. Moreover, Vincent Iorio (RFA) and Alberts Smits (No. 5 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft) could also be added to the mix.

NY Rangers have high hopes

That blue-line core, combined with Shesterkin as the starter, Joonas Korpisalo filling in when needed, and Sullivan behind the bench, could very well set the Rangers up for a strong season.

The retool may hit paydirt right away for Chris Drury and company, but it may all hinge on New York becoming a defensive powerhouse, with Shesterkin serving as the cornerstone. Otherwise, it could all come crashing down like a house of cards.

However, while discussing the new bench boss in the Gateway to the North, McDavid said something that may have been aimed at Edmonton’s former head coach, Knoblauch, who led the team to consecutive Stanley Cup Finals in 2024 and 2025, but was fired after the 2025-26 NHL campaign.

“You name it, [Babcock] has done it. It’s a great opportunity for us players to be coached by somebody like him. Where our group is at and what we’re looking for, he’s a perfect fit. He’s not going to need to come in and find who he is as a coach,” McDavid admitted to media during a charity event in Toronto. “Our job as players is to be ready to go.“

Apparent shot at Knoblauch

Some might say it’s reading too much into McDavid’s words, but it can also be argued that nothing is said by accident. What exactly did McDavid mean when he said Babcock won’t have to find himself as a coach?

Reading between the lines, it certainly looks like a knock on Knoblauch, who had no NHL head coaching experience before taking over the reins in Edmonton—aside from a six-game shift to cover for New York Rangers’ David Quinn when he was placed on the COVID-19 protocol list.

Knoblauch did guide the team to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals, but he couldn’t get it done, and there was plenty of speculation that his game plan fell apart on the biggest stage, especially with the Oilers going up against a Florida Panthers squad that Paul Maurice had built to peak in the postseason.

The Oilers and their ghosts from the past

In 2024, the Oilers lost the final in seven games, but only after spending most of the series on the brink of elimination following Game 3. In 2025, Edmonton fell to Florida in six games, though that series felt far more lopsided than the final score suggested. Whenever the Panthers were clicking, they overwhelmed the Oilers, and Knoblauch had no answers.

Last season, Edmonton didn’t even make it past the first round against an Anaheim Ducks team that shocked the league, and that was ultimately the end of the line for Knoblauch.

Looking at the way most fans in the Gateway to the North talk about Knoblauch’s time, one may never guess his résumé included consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances. In a place that prides itself on being the City of Champions, second-place medals aren’t enough.

McDavid, Oilers set for new beginning

McDavid’s latest comments may shed some light on the reported tension between the players and the former coaching staff. If that’s the case, it also paints a clearer picture of why the front office landed on Babcock as Knoblauch’s successor. The hire made plenty of noise in its own right, and reportedly required the players signing off on the decision.

That’s where things stand for McDavid and the Oilers heading into a new season. Everything is new, except it sure doesn’t feel as such. McDavid has a new contract in the form of a two-year, $25 million extension, a new head coach, but the same old expectations—and the same old monkey on his back.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The Oilers can only hope the 2026-27 NHL season doesn’t follow the same script as its predecessors. Unfortunately for them, there are no guarantees.

Although the Red Wings are still processing the fact that Larkin wants out and Kane is gone, they can’t ignore the ticking clock ahead of the 2026-27 NHL season. Truth be told, that’s much easier said than done. On top of that, Kane’s media tour after returning to Chicago has only made things more difficult for Detroit, which may have just learned an uncomfortable truth about his departure.

“At the end of the season I thought I’d be going back to Detroit,” Kane admitted during an interview on Pardon My Take. “You know, things happen, and it’s like let’s just take our time, see what’s out there July 1st.“

Larkin’s trade request likely the last straw

Kane didn’t say it outright, but all signs point to Larkin’s trade request pushing him to test free agency. When Kane said “things happen,” he probably alluded to Larkin’s blunt decision. After three straight seasons in which the Red Wings missed the playoffs, learning that not even the captain believed in the organization’s direction—and wanted out of his home state of Michigan—might have been the final nail in the coffin for Kane’s time in Motor City.

At the end of the day, Kane will turn 38 next season and can’t afford to head into another campaign with low expectations for his team. He has previously explained why he sees potential in Chicago, in comments many believe Kane was taking a shot at the Red Wings with. Whether that was truly his intention, only Kane knows, and it matters little.

What’s clear is that Kane is convinced returning to the Blackhawks was the right choice and that his time with the Red Wings was nearing its end. He may not have realized it during the season, but Larkin’s trade request might have been what ultimately opened his eyes.

Detroit wouldn’t have paid Kane as much

Kane signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Blackhawks that caught the NHL by surprise. Many see the deal as an overpay on Chicago’s part. The reality, though, is that the Hawks have more than enough cap space to accommodate such a contract and knew that was the easiest way to put the matter to rest and avoid Kane signing elsewhere.

From a pure salary-cap standpoint, the Red Wings could also have paid Kane $8 million per year, but they are in a much different position with their roster, and it wouldn’t have been a wise move on their part. For the Blackhawks, on the other hand, paying Kane that much makes plenty of sense.

Moreover, Detroit gave Kane three consecutive one-year deals, during which he earned a combined $9.75 million. In just one season back in the Windy City, “Showtime” will almost match his career earnings during his entire stint in Motor City.

Couldn’t turn Chicago down

When every moving part is weighed, Kane’s return to Chicago made too much sense. He’s back in a city that adores him, where he has nothing to prove and everything to gain. That was far from his reality in Detroit, where Kane was a fan favorite but could just as easily end up in the media’s meat grinder after every team-wide misstep.

In the City of Big Shoulders, Kane is a walking legend, and he’s set to join a young squad brimming with potential and eager to take the league by storm. In Motor City, on the other hand, the future is uncertain, and the air seems to grow heavier by the minute.

If there is one saying the 49ers should be well familiarized with, it’s that when it rains, it pours. Sometimes, however, the downpour only lasts a short while. Fortunately, it turned out to be a false alarm. For a change, San Francisco could breathe a sigh of relief after an injury scare at practice.

“The 49ers announce that Romello Height had cramps,” Matt Maiocco from NBC Sports Bay Area reported on his X account. “Height sustained an injury in practice and was carted off the field. The medical staff appeared to be working on both his right leg and both arms.”

Height scares 49ers

It must have been some supernatural cramps for the 6-foot-2 rookie out of Texas Tech to require that kind of medical attention. Still, the 49ers will gladly take the outcome.

Had they lost their third-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft to a serious injury on Day 2 of training camp, it could have been a terrible omen for what the season might have in store in San Francisco.

The buzz around the Niners and their facilities

Much has been speculated about the 49ers’ facility and its proximity to an electrical substation, fueling all sorts of conspiracy theories across social media. If the team had lost one of its newest additions to a serious injury just days into training camp, that narrative would have been blown out of proportion.

The 49ers already have enough on their plate. They have no desire to add yet another concern with a serious injury this early in the calendar. Fortunately, Height’s case turned out to be nothing more than a scare.

For the time being, the team has no reason to worry about its rookie defensive lineman. Just to be safe, though, the 49ers’ nutritionists might want to add a few more pickles—and some pickle juice—to his diet.

Thus, the Giants are taking a closer look at Ahmaad Moses, who is coming off a tremendous senior year at SMU, but carries some health luggage that’s impossible to overlook.

“The New York Giants are working out former SMU safety Ahmaad Moses today, per source,” Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported on his X account. The Giants will open up training camp on July 28, only a day after Moses’ private workout.

For the time being, it’s unclear where Moses’ workout took place, though all signs point to West Virginia, where Harbaugh, his coaching staff, and the rest of the team are preparing for training camp in the Mountain State.

Health concerns around Moses

The first-year safety’s numbers speak for themselves. He recorded 104 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss (TFL), five interceptions, and even a sack last season. His career-year with the Mustangs earned him first-team All-ACC honors and put him on the map as a top safety prospect entering the NFL Draft. However, a herniated disc was discovered during his Combine process, which led to spinal fusion surgery.

“A spinal fusion surgery essentially takes two or more vertebra and grafts them together to form a solid column of bone. It may not be the best choice to treat a ruptured disc,” a 2019 article on Neurosurgeons of New Jersey states.

Needless to say, such a complex medical procedure raises question marks all around an NFL player. Especially one whose mobility is as crucial as a safety’s, and one with no previous experience at this level as an undrafted rookie. The Giants must tread carefully.

NY Giants’ depth at safety

And it’s not as if the G-Men are short on options in the safety room. As things stand, Big Blue boasts the likes of Jevon Holland, Elijah Campbell, and Raheem Layne at free safety, while Tyler Nubin, Jason Pinnock, and Beau Brade make up the strong safety group.

New York has already seen defensive backs go down with season-ending injuries, so the coaching staff may want to play it safe and stock up on depth options, just in case.

According to a report around the NHL, the Islanders have reached out to Laine and his camp. However, Laine’s next contract—if he even gets one—will look nothing like his previous deal, which was a topic of conversation in its own right. In fact, the Isles may be willing to offer Laine nothing more than minimum interest—and as a result—compensation.

“From what I’ve been told, the Islanders did have conversations with Patrik Laine’s camp when free agency opened. I don’t believe the Islanders were willing, or are willing, to offer Laine anything more than a tryout,” Stefen Rosner stated on The Elmonters podcast.

Much has changed for Laine

Back in July 2022, Laine put pen to paper on a four-year, $34.8 million contract in the NHL. Under that deal, he was set to earn an average of $8.7 million per season over four years. However, nothing went right for the Finnish sniper. From the moment he signed the extension in Columbus, Laine appeared in just 130 of a possible 328 games.

Not only that, but Laine was traded to Montreal in 2024. He showed flashes of his goal-scoring ability by scoring 20 goals in 52 games in Quebec’s Metropolis, but that was about it.

Last season, Laine underwent core muscle surgery. He was limited to just five games all season and wasn’t in consideration for a spot on the active roster during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Laine hasn’t played an NHL game since Oct. 16, 2025. Over his last 20 games across the past two seasons, he has recorded just six points.

Things aren’t looking great for Laine

All in all, the concerns surrounding Laine are numerous, and the guarantees simply aren’t there. As a result, any team interested in him will exercise extra caution and will likely prefer signing him to a professional tryout (PTO) rather than committing guaranteed money.

Whether Laine signs with a team or goes out of business in the NHL could come down to whether he looks anything close to the winger who once scored 44 goals in a season—or at least to the 20-goal scorer he was two seasons ago. Some believe Laine’s time in the league has come to an end. The truth is, he’ll have to earn his way back, even if that’s something a former second overall pick probably never expected to face.

It may be hard for Laine to accept, but that’s the direction things appear to be heading. From signing a contract with an $8.7 million cap hit to having to try out for a roster spot. Life comes at you fast in the NHL, and Laine’s journey is another example of it.

“Will DeBrincat leave the Red Wings? That seems unlikely,” Bob Duff reported on Detroit Hockey Now. “As long as Detroit brass is willing to pony up the cash for DeBrincat and pay him market value, expect him to stay put. DeBrincat likes it here.“

Coming off a career high in points while matching his career-best total of 41 goals, and entering the final year of his contract, there is really no reason why the Red Wings shouldn’t extend DeBrincat an offer he can’t refuse and keep their best forward locked up for the long haul. Larkin asking out is already one trade request too many for them.

Re-signing DeBrincat should be priority

Too much has gone wrong for Detroit as of late—regardless of whether it’s entirely the team’s fault or not—for the Red Wings to add another item to the list. If DeBrincat truly wants to stay with the Wings, it should all come together with barely a hiccup.

Although Larkin’s trade request has triggered a domino effect and played a role in Patrick Kane’s departure, it appears the captain’s desire to jump ship may have no bearing on DeBrincat’s vision for his NHL career. At least, it won’t lead him to such a blunt decision.

Maybe “The Cat” asks for a higher price to overlook the glaring issues within the franchise, but that could be about it. At the end of the day, he did register 85 points last season (41 G, 44 A), so DeBrincat is well within his rights to ask for a raise.

Risk of DeBrincat testing free agency

While the Red Wings may be confident DeBrincat won’t ask for a trade out of the organization, they have no way of knowing whether the 28-year-old Michigan native would be interested in testing the open market. Well, there is actually a way to find out, and all it takes is for Detroit to begin contract negotiations with DeBrincat and his camp right away.

Moreover, by doing so before the 2026-27 NHL season gets underway, the Wings could avoid a rough start affecting DeBrincat’s stance and pushing him toward free agency next summer. In more ways than one, the sooner Detroit gets to work with DeBrincat, the smoother the process could be.

However, there may not be much to be done as long as the Red Wings do not have a permanent general manager in place. And that, unlike DeBrincat’s future, is a decision that will take time and careful consideration. Both issues are on the scale: hiring Detroit’s next general manager to right the ship and re-signing their best forward. As impactful as DeBrincat is, he may have no way of competing with a decision as significant to the organization’s future as finding Yzerman’s successor.

DeBrincat’s current deal

DeBrincat is set to enter the final season of his four-year, $31.5 million contract. Under his current deal, DeBrincat carries a $7.875 million cap hit and is set to earn a total salary of $6.75 million in 2026-27, according to PuckPedia.

Since signing the deal in 2023, DeBrincat’s point production has steadily increased. Barring a disastrous season, his next contract should come with a considerable raise in average annual value (AAV). Whether he signs it in his home state of Michigan or elsewhere in the NHL, that’s the mystery.

DeBrincat may not want to request a trade and go down Larkin’s path, but as long as he remains unsigned throughout the upcoming season, the possibility of him testing free agency will always loom.

Although Kane sent the Red Wings an emotional goodbye message, he hasn’t hidden his pent-up frustration. Back in Chicago, he wants to make sure everybody is on the same page. Not many believe the Blackhawks will be a playoff team in the 2026-27 NHL season, but Kane doesn’t care.

While some believe Kane took a shot at the Red Wings when explaining his return to the Blackhawks, this latest comment wasn’t a dig at his former team so much as a reflection of how eager he is to make up for what went wrong in Detroit.

“I would love to see this team in the playoffs,” Kane didn’t stutter to confess in only his first days back on the Blackhawks, via CHSN. “I think it would be incredible to have some playoff games at the United Center again. That’s kind of where we are at. That’s probably the biggest goal.”

Kane says anything can happen in playoffs

Not many have the Blackhawks making the postseason on their bingo cards. Kane knows that. But that only adds another layer to why Chicago wants to prove fans and analysts around the NHL wrong.

It’s been a while since the Blackhawks last got a taste of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but if there’s someone who can convince fans in Chicago they have a chance, it’s Kane. After all, “Showtime” is synonymous with the Hawks’ dynasty, and perhaps a new one can begin as he joins Connor Bedard—who subtly asked to play alongside Kane on the top line—and the rest of the young core.

“In the playoffs, anything can happen. You’ve seen it with teams,” Kane commented. “[The Florida Panthers] were the last team in the playoffs [in 2023] they made it to the finals and then you see the run they went on. Vegas and Detroit had the same amount of points last year. Detroit misses the playoffs, and Vegas makes the Stanley Cup final. There’s so much parity in the league you just really need to find a way to get in.”

Tall order for Chicago

If Chicago makes it to the playoffs, anything can happen. The challenge is getting there, and that’s no small feat for a Blackhawks team that shares a division with the likes of the Colorado Avalanche, Minnesota Wild, and Dallas Stars, among other potential contenders.

Last time Chicago made the playoffs

The Blackhawks’ last playoff appearance came in 2020. After advancing through the qualifying round, Chicago lost to the Golden Knights in five games during the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the Edmonton bubble. The Hawks haven’t played a postseason game since.

If you only count full seasons with no asterisks, Chicago’s most recent playoff appearance dates back to the 2016-17 campaign. Nearly a decade has passed since the Predators swept the Blackhawks in the first round, a series widely regarded as the official end of Chicago’s dynasty.

Last time Kane played in playoffs

As for Kane, he hasn’t reached the postseason since the 2022-23 campaign, when he was with the New York Rangers and suffered a first-round elimination at the hands of the New Jersey Devils in seven games. For Kane, it’s been three seasons since his last playoff appearance—exactly the time he spent with the Red Wings.

Now back in Chicago, the memories of his glory years in the Windy City are impossible to ignore. However, Kane didn’t return to indulge in nostalgia. He wants more, and he’s making that clear from the very beginning.

However, Larkin has been spending a lot of time with the Hughes brothers (Quinn, Jack, and Luke), leading fans to wonder if there could be a fifth club added to the list in the not-so-distant future.

On Saturday night, Larkin joined the Hughes brothers and other friends for a night out at an exclusive nightclub in New York City. NBA stars like Jalen Brunson and Michael Porter Jr. were also among the attendees. Still, Larkin’s appearance alongside the stars from the Minnesota Wild and New Jersey Devils made waves across the NHL.

Larkin and the Devils

For the time being, there has been no progress in trade talks, though. Still, reports indicate Larkin is fully convinced on leaving the Red Wings. It may not be long before Larkin, still the team’s captain, realizes he’ll have to broaden his options and make the task a bit easier on his organization.

Thus, and considering Larkin’s friendship with Jack and Luke Hughes, many believe the New Jersey Devils could become the fifth option if Detroit asks Larkin to add another team to his trade list.

Larkin’s preferred teams

Larkin has made it clear he’ll be willing to waive his NTC if an offer comes through from one of the following teams: the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, or Dallas Stars. That’s the list, at least for the time being.

Detroit has no leverage, and whether it will ask its captain to expand the list or make do with it, only time will tell. The relationship seems past the point of no return and, even though the Red Wings reportedly demoted Steve Yzerman in an effort to keep Larkin, the trust has been broken.

Red Wings in a tough spot

Calling the Red Wings’ situation a shipwreck may be an exaggeration, but the captain is jumping ship regardless. Larkin’s trade request also triggered a domino effect, such as Patrick Kane’s decision to leave Detroit and take an apparent shot at the Red Wings while addressing his return to the Chicago Blackhawks. Many more pieces could soon fall.

As painful as it may be for the front office in Motor City to admit, Larkin isn’t the only headache awaiting the next general manager to take over following Yzerman’s demotion.

Why Devils make sense

The Devils make sense, as they boast a young core with plenty of promise. Had New Jersey not parted ways with GM Tom Fitzgerald, the Devils would have had another element working in their favor, as Fitzgerald was a member of Team USA’s management staff at the Olympics. Clearly, that event has had a major impact on Larkin and his career.

Whether New Jersey is a destination Larkin is seriously considering—and perhaps one that is on the bubble—remains to be seen. What’s clearer is that Minnesota emerges as the top landing spot for Larkin, and him spending time with Quinn Hughes only fuels that belief.

Still, it begs the question of whether the two younger Hughes brothers are doing their part to lure Larkin to New Jersey and, while they’re at it, bending Quinn’s ear as well. After all, Quinn could become a UFA next summer and playing with his brothers was always dream of his—one he never kept a secret.

As things stand, Larkin is holding his ground. However, it hasn’t done him much good. He hasn’t been traded yet, and with every passing day, more fans in Motor City are turning on him as the Michigan native’s story turns into a villain arc.

“Everyone he’s played with, he’s made them better,” Bedard said during an interview on OverDrive. “Probably the best hands ever in the history of hockey and one of the best passers, some of the best IQ. So if it’s me or whoever is playing on his line, it’s going to make that player so much better. I’d be very lucky to get some passes from him for sure.”

Bedard didn’t go over the top with his statement, yet he got his message across and made it clear just how much he’d like to play with arguably the best American skater in NHL history. The Blackhawks have time to decide what the best course of action is, and Bedard will likely be back on the ice by late October-November, but the young star has made his pitch.

Much-needed help for Bedard

It’s been a long time coming, but Bedard finally has the chance to play alongside an elite talent on Chicago’s top unit—even if it comes in the form of a 37-year-old Kane. Better late than never.

The Blackhawks’ potential forward lines are one of the most intriguing storylines heading into the new season, and even if Bedard isn’t available on opening night, he is already looking forward to sharing the ice with “Showtime.”

In the meantime, Bedard’s comments serve as a subtle “save me a spot” message to the organization. If one thing is clear, is that when Bedard speaks, Chicago listens.

Will Kane and Bedard play together?

Whether pairing Kane and Bedard on the top line is the right move, or whether the Blackhawks would be better off spreading out their talent across the top six, only time will tell. As with many things in Chicago lately, it will likely come down to trial and error. Those are the growing pains that accompany every NHL rebuild.

By now, the Blackhawks are all too familiar with them, and Kane will have to get used to them as well. It’s exactly what he signed up for when he put pen to paper on his new contract, a deal that underscores the organization’s urgency to help Bedard and the rest of the roster take the next step.

Under his new deal, Brissett is now set to receive $15.5 million in guaranteed money. Moreover, if he reaches certain incentives throughout the 2026 NFL season, his earnings could climb as high as $21 million for the season.

With Brissett locked in, the Cardinals have secured their quarterback room for the 2026 campaign. Not many expectations are being placed on Arizona, but rolling with a quarterback group accustomed to defying the odds and being overlooked may be exactly what the organization needs to put the league on notice this season.

Cardinals’ QB room

In addition to Brissett, who has now restructured his contract in Glendale, the Cardinals’ quarterback depth chart includes the likes of Gardner Minshew, rookie Carson Beck, and Kedon Slovis.

As things stand, Minshew is expected to be Brissett’s backup. However, reports out of training camp suggest Beck, who signed a $7.4 million deal with the Cardinals, could overtake him for the second-string spot on the depth chart. Who knows? Maybe Beck even gives Brissett a run for his money.

For the time being, the 33-year-old is Arizona’s No. 1 quarterback, but a lot can happen before the season kicks off. Moreover, if Brissett doesn’t get off to a strong start, the buzz around the franchise in the Copper State could quickly turn into calls for the rookie to take over under center.

Brissett’s revamped contract

After standing his ground for most of the offseason, Brissett finally got what he was after. Well aware that he will be Arizona’s starting quarterback this season, the veteran wanted a contract that reflected his status as an NFL starter. At the end of the day, only 32 players can claim that title, and Brissett’s restructured deal is more fitting.

Entering the second year of his two-year contract, Brissett was set to make less than $5 million in base salary this season. Now, his base pay will be more than three times that amount.

With the contract negotiations behind them, Brissett and the entire organization can turn their full attention to training camp and prepare for a challenging year in an NFC West that only seems to get stronger by the day.

The Giants confirmed that Cam Jones (linebacker) and C.J. Ravenell have been placed on waivers. As reported by Dan Duggan, Jones has been inactive ever since suffering an ankle injury while moving into his new home in New Jersey.

The NFL offseason often produces unusual stories, and Jones’ reported injury is definitely near the top of the list heading into the 2026 campaign. The Giants are still well stocked at linebacker, meaning Jones’ departure may become an afterthought by the time the season rolls around.

NY Giants’ depth at the position

With John Harbaugh at the helm and Dennard Wilson calling the plays, New York’s defense appears set for a big year, and the arrival of Arvell Reese may be the cherry on top of a stacked defensive unit that has no shortage of options at linebacker.

In addition to Reese, who will be the team’s primary Will linebacker, the Giants have Tremaine Edmunds at the Mike spot. Providing depth, Harbaugh can also count on Micah McFadden, Jack Kelly, Zaire Barnes, and Darius Muasau.

Final tweaks before training camp

The Giants will open training camp on Wednesday, July 29. After releasing Jones and Ravenell, New York has two open roster spots, and it may not be long before the coaching staff fills them. According to several reports, the G-Men could host private workouts with available players on Tuesday in hopes of making last-minute additions to the training camp roster.

“Berterame is doing well,” Inter Miami’s statement read. “He was discharged from the hospital today and is returning home after spending the night under observation at Montreal General Hospital.

“He sustained injuries to his left shoulder and nose as a result of the hard blow he suffered during the match. He will begin the corresponding recovery process in the coming days under the supervision of the Club’s medical staff. His progress will determine the timeline for his return to physical activity.“

What happened to Berterame?

Challenging for a high ball near the 70th minute of the game, Berterame was hit from behind by CF Montreal defender Efrain Morales, whose header attempt caught the striker in the shoulder and the back of the head. Berterame landed headfirst on the pitch, which explains the nose injury, and appeared to lose consciousness.

Inter Miami’s medical staff came rushing onto the field as players from both sides reacted and helped the striker while the medics attended to him. Berterame had to be stretchered into an ambulance and was taken immediately to the nearest hospital to Montreal’s home stadium.

According to the club’s latest statement, Berterame is doing well and is out of danger. Still, the scary scenes in Quebec’s metropolis, combined with the fact that it was a head injury, mean the Herons must be patient and take every precaution before Berterame returns to action.

When does Inter Miami play next?

Inter Miami’s next game will be against Columbus Crew on August 1. The Herons will return home, hosting the visitors from Ohio at Nu Stadium. Inter Miami has won six games in a row, going back to May, and will look to make it seven straight against Columbus.

Obviously, Larkin’s future—and how much the Red Wings can get in return—is the biggest item on the agenda in Motor City during the NHL offseason. According to reports, Larkin is fully convinced on leaving the Red Wings. That issue is virtually a done deal—pending, of course, a suitable trade offer.

However, several other roster decisions are on deck, and Alex DeBrincat is the biggest question mark. Contrary to Larkin, “Cat” may not be past the point of no return yet. The Red Wings will need to get to work soon, though, and it’s hard to sell any pitch to a player without a general manager.

“40-goal scorers such as DeBrincat are rare and hard to replace. That makes his future a key domino for the Red Wings’ direction,” Max Bultman and Shayna Goldman stated on The Athletic.

DeBrincat’s situation

DeBrincat is entering the final season of his four-year, $31.5 million contract. He played in all 82 games last season and led the team in goals and points (41 and 85, respectively). Aside from him, only Larkin topped the 30-goal mark in Detroit.

Even though the Red Wings boast an intriguing prospect pool, they may be naïve to believe they can replace that level of production if both Larkin and DeBrincat are gone by next summer. Thus, it’s clear the Red Wings must find a way to re-sign DeBrincat as soon as possible. However, the current state of affairs in Motor City makes that a near-impossible mission.

DeBrincat may want fresh start

At 28—he will turn 29 on Dec. 18—DeBrincat is in the prime of his career. If he were to test free agency, not only could he command a fortune, but he could also join a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. Though closing in on 600 career points (294 G, 301 A), DeBrincat has reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs only once.

Truth be told, it seems unlikely Detroit can convince the “Cat” to stay when the organization’s vision is in such a pickle, the homegrown captain has asked out, and a franchise legend has stepped down from the organization’s top front-office role to become a senior adviser. For the time being, Detroit has no general manager, and its odds of extending DeBrincat’s stay are not helped by that fact.

That would leave the trade route wide open for Detroit to exploit. It’d be deflating, as it would imply the Red Wings are giving up on their playoff aspirations, but it would also be the honest thing to do. If Detroit shops a 40-goal scorer at the deadline, they could come away with a king’s ransom. And it might be enough for the organization to push its pride aside and make the responsible—yet tough—call.

More concerns for Detroit

In addition to DeBrincat’s situation, the next GM in Hockeytown will have to address the net. As things stand, both rostered goaltenders (John Gibson and Daniil Tarasov) are on expiring contracts. Trey Augustine casts a light of hope in the prospect pipeline, but it may still be too much to ask for a rookie goalie to take over the reins as a 21- or 22-year-old.

Put into words, it may feel a thankless job, and perhaps that’s why a successor to Yzerman has yet to be named. “The Yzerplan” did not work out, and fans must now wait to see what new proposal is put forward inside the building on Woodward Avenue.

It may seem sudden or premature, but Gavrikov may not want to waste time on a non-contending team with his 31st birthday coming midway through the upcoming campaign. Gavrikov could still be rushing into a decision, but perhaps he’s seen all he needs to make up his mind about the way things are run in New York. Although he’s locked to the Rangers through 2032, he may be in a new NHL organization before next summer.

“There are still whispers that Gavrikov is not super happy with the direction of the Rangers,” Arthur Staple said on Rangers Recon podcast. “If things go bad, is he going to be a guy in Drury’s office saying ‘I think I’d like to go somewhere else’ in year two of a seven-year deal?”

Gavrikov’s trade clause

In the event Gavrikov asks out of New York, the Rangers’ front office would have a lot to take into account. According to reports, the Rangers may be giving Chris Drury two more seasons of leeway, but a trade request from Gavrikov—whom Drury signed to a seven-year deal—could change everything.

Not only did Drury commit to paying Gavrikov $18 million in total salary through the first two years of his deal, but he also gave him a full no-movement clause (NMC). If Gavrikov requests a trade, he would be in full control of where he goes next. As for what would be up to them, the Blueshirts could only hang on to the blueliner and watch a $7 million cap hit go to waste.

Clearly, Drury must hope there’s no fire behind the smoke and that rumors about Gavrikov’s growing frustration aren’t as serious as they’re being portrayed. Otherwise, it would be yet another front-office decision that blows up in New York’s face.

NY Rangers’ defensive depth

The Rangers did a good job addressing one of their biggest concerns this offseason. New York traded for Marcus Pettersson and Sean Durzi, drafted Alberts Smits with the fifth overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, and bought itself time by settling with Braden Schneider on a one-year deal.

It cost the Rangers Vincent Trocheck and a conditional 2030 first-round pick (top-10 protected), but it may all be worth it. That hinges entirely on how the Blueshirts perform next season. That’s usually how it goes. No one judges offseason moves based on first impressions in the summer. Their true impact is measured over the course of the season.

For the Rangers, the stakes are high. If they go off the rails like they did last year, Gavrikov may ask out, and who knows where the domino effect would stop. The speculation surrounding Adam Fox’s future would once again dominate the headlines, and perhaps the hometown player would finally walk into Drury’s office, knock on the door, and ask for a trade out of Manhattan.

New York set for crucial season

After the season New York has been through, some might say the only way is up. But that’s only a figure of speech, and the Rangers know things can always get worse. Winning usually fixes everything in sports, and in the City That Never Sleeps, it’s the ultimate medicine.

“Believe me that I didn’t notice [what was happening] at the time. I must have been celebrating with others, I didn’t realize. Certainly, that was inadmissible and intolerable for soccer players of that level,” de la Fuente said during an interview on Teledeporte.

“I had praised them every day going into the final, and still do, because they are great players. [Argentina] have a great head coach, who I’m sure went went through as hard a time as we did after seeing such reactions. What I do believe must be highlighted was our behavior. Especially after that kind of aggressions and provocations, our players always kept good sportsmanship.”

Reactions to the fight

De la Fuente isn’t the first—nor will he be the last—to speak on the incident. Argentina’s assistant coach Roberto Ayala expressed regret over his scuffle with Dani Olmo once the tension had settled after the heated showdown.

Moreover, Gavi addressed his fight with Leandro Paredes and the lack of a red card for the Argentine midfielder. As for Paredes, he hasn’t made any comment on the topic. Most likely, he won’t address it and simply move on.

How the fighting started

After referee Slavko Vincic blew the final whistle on extra time and Spain were crowned the 2026 World Cup champions, players on the bench flew onto the pitch. Some words must have been exchanged between Leandro Paredes and Eric García, as the Argentine shoved the Spaniard to the ground.

Gavi intervened but received the worst of it, being targeted by Paredes and, to a lesser extent, Thiago Almada. Lionel Scaloni stepped in to separate the fighting parties, while another quarrel broke out between Ayala and Olmo. After several intense seconds, the scuffle ended and the two sides went their separate ways.

With that, the 2026 World Cup had a conclusion on par with the extreme tension of the knockout stage, though far from what the spirit of sport and FIFA’s message aims to be.

Things have changed a lot since Kane and Toews last played together. However, Toews is still keeping up with news surrounding his iconic former teammate and the club he led to three Stanley Cups. When he learned of “Showtime’s” return to Chicago, the recently retired centerman shared a sincere message, confessing he was a bit jealous of the way Kane may get to close out his NHL career.

“Awesome news, pretty cool to see [Kane] get the chance to go back,” Toews admitted, per The Athletic. “We were texting and as happy as I am for him I told him I’m straight-up jealous that he’s gonna get to play for the Hawks again.”

Toews didn’t get that chance

After being away from the league on a life-changing personal journey centered on his physical and mental health, Toews announced his desire to return to the NHL for the 2025-26 campaign. Although Chicago was the first team anyone thought of when Toews’ name came up, the Blackhawks weren’t looking to sign the veteran center.

At the time, the organization remained committed to its rebuild and a 37-year-old coming off a two-year hiatus didn’t fit Chicago’s vision. Thus, Toews turned to his hometown club, the Winnipeg Jets, and fulfilled the only childhood dream he had yet to accomplish in his decorated NHL career.

Still, Toews has now confessed he would’ve liked to return to Chicago, and seeing Kane get that homecoming may strike a sensitive chord. It may be one of those things you don’t realize you want until you see someone else enjoying it.

Has Chicago changed its mind about rebuild?

Although the fan base in town is ecstatic about Kane’s signing, it does raise some questions. Should they be worried that the Blackhawks have gone off script and signed a veteran to a two-year, $16 million contract? Has the front office lost its way? According to Toews, Hawks fans have nothing to worry about.

“The team is heading in the right direction and [Kane] will bring such good experience and leadership for the young guys in that room,” Toews stated. “It will be cool for the young stars to see first-hand what impact they can have when ‘Kaner’ gets back on the ice at the United Center.“

The Blackhawks boast a youth-filled lineup that grew up watching Kane, Toews, and the Blackhawks build a dynasty in the City of Big Shoulders. Playing alongside “Showtime” will be a dream come true for many of them, and perhaps just what Chicago needs to finally move beyond the training-wheels phase of its rebuild.

Detroit is not only getting worse, but its nemeses are improving. That’s all the more reason the Red Wings must figure out a way to change Larkin’s mind or find an unbeatable offer on the trade market. Unfortunately for the organization in Michigan, both seem unlikely for the time being.

“Is the relationship with the [Red Wings] fixable, salvageable, or [Larkin] is dead set on what he wants; it seems like it’s the latter,” David Pagnotta said on the Daily Faceoff Rundown.

The Larkin effect

As reported by Helene St. James, the brass in Detroit is upset with Larkin—and for good reason. A captain asking out of a franchise would be a terrible look for any NHL organization, but especially for one that has struggled as much as the Red Wings in recent years.

At first, many believed Steve Yzerman stepping down from his role as executive vice president and general manager could be the first step toward reconciliation with Larkin. However, Yzerman remains a senior adviser with the Red Wings.

If it comes down to Larkin or Yzerman, the Hall of Famer who won three Stanley Cups in Detroit may have the upper hand, even if his work in the front office has left much to be desired.

Could Larkin change his mind?

Regardless, it may be too late for Larkin to get cold feet, even if he suddenly wanted to stay in his home state, where he has played hockey his entire life. Larkin’s trade request played a role in Kane’s decision to test free agency, likely affected Detroit’s appeal in free agency, and has already done enough damage.

At the end of the day, it may be best for the Red Wings to bite the bullet, accept a trade offer, and get it all over with. The problem is that Larkin is signed to a full no-trade clause. He has handed Detroit a four-team trade list that does little to help, leaving the Red Wings with their hands tied behind their backs.

Larkin and Detroit play the waiting game

The wait isn’t ideal for Larkin, either. Still, Larkin is 29 (he will turn 30 on July 30) and signed through 2031. Sooner or later, another organization will come to his rescue. As for the Red Wings, they won’t be thrown a lifeline, and no one will want to overpay for a player who is actively pushing to leave from the other side of the door.

With Kane back in town, the Blackhawks finally got the missing piece to their top six group. Although Bedard won’t be available to play in the first games of the NHL season, Chicago is confident it can weather the storm, and Kane’s arrival is perfect to accomplish that.

Whether Kane will join Bedard on the first line or play alongside the young duo of Frank Nazar and Anton Frondell remains uncertain, and head coach Jeff Blashill has plenty of time to figure that out. For the time being, the Blackhawks are pleased to look at their top six and see it filled with possibilities. For the first time in a long while, Chicago has options, and that’s all they could ask for right now.

Blackhawks’ potential lineup

Although Kane will turn 38 midway through the upcoming season, he has proven he can still hang with the best players and compete against the top lines in the NHL. Moreover, it’d be surprising for the Hawks to leave him out of the top six after agreeing to pay him $8 million per season over the next two years. If Chicago were after a bottom-six player, it could’ve signed three players for the price of Kane.

Clearly, Kane will headline the top six, and perhaps the top unit alongside Bedard. At the end of the day, that’s what fans want to see. Even if only sporadically, Nos. 98 and 88 will join forces time and time again.

How Chicago could adjust to Bedard’s injury

With Bedard out to start the campaign, there’s reason to believe Nazar could center the top forward line, while Frondell anchors the second line. Other pieces would also have to be reshuffled to fill the vacant spots, but the change down the middle would be the most notable. Thus, barring new injuries or setbacks, this is how the Hawks may lineup during their season opener:

As reported by Elliotte Friedman, Patrick Kane has signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. Under the deal, Kane gets the longer stay in Chicago he was reportedly after, rather than going through yet another contract year and nerve-racking offseason. “Showtime” is back in the City of Big Shoulders and is setting up shop on Michigan Avenue through the 2027-28 NHL season.

Although Bedard will be sidelined to start the NHL regular season (expected to miss September and October), Kane’s arrival should do wonders for the 21-year-old entering his fourth year in the league. Judging by how much money Chicago is investing in Kane at 37 (will turn 38 on Nov. 19), it’s clear the Blackhawks are growing anxious, and they don’t care to hide that from the rest of the league.

Kane’s new contract sets him for big raise

Coming off three consecutive one-year deals with the Detroit Red Wings, Kane informed the organization in Motor City he wouldn’t return—the franchise’s 10th straight playoff miss and Dylan Larkin’s ‘no way out’ trade request likely proved to be the last straw. It paid off for Kane, who is now set to make significantly more than he did in Detroit.

Kane earned a total of $9.75 million across his three seasons with the Red Wings. He will earn almost that much in just his first year back in Chi-town. During the 2026-27 NHL season, Kane will be the second-highest-paid player on the roster behind Bedard ($17 million salary this season).

In 2027-28, however, Kane will also drop behind Bowen Byram, whose six-year, $75 million extension will come into effect. Still, considering how much he was making in Detroit, Kane can’t complain. The cherry on top is that he gets to call the United Center home once again.

An unbeatable offer

While deciding between his hometown club and the organization that drafted him first overall was a difficult choice for Kane, the moment Chicago made its bid, the debate was probably over. No one saw such a deal coming, and it was certainly an offer the Sabres couldn’t match—and probably wouldn’t have been interested in matching.

The Sabres have roughly $5 million available in cap space, so they wouldn’t have been able to accommodate an $8 million AAV deal for the veteran Kane. Chicago, on the other hand, was well below the salary cap and was essentially negotiating with a blank check. In the end, the most logical outcome came to pass, and Kane signed with the Blackhawks.

Who knows? Maybe things don’t work out and Kane is traded to the Sabres before the deadline (more likely in 2028). For the time being, though, No. 88 is back in Chicago, and it seems that’s where he’ll spend the rest of his career.

According to a report, the Hawks—despite their pitch of going back down memory lane and reliving the great times “Showtime” enjoyed in the Windy City—have no better chance of landing Kane than the Sabres, and that may be the best they can hope for.

“I have no reason to believe it’s any better than 50% right now,” Al Cimaglia, former NHL Network Radio contributor, stated on his X account about the chances Kane signs with the Blackhawks. Basically, Kane’s future in the league could come down to a coin-flip.

Chicago doesn’t love its chances

Many could argue that a 50-50 chance is strong enough, but as Connor Bedard wishes for Kane to return to Chicago and the entire city is paying close attention, it still may not feel like enough. Especially when the Hawks are competing with the nostalgia of Kane’s childhood in Western New York.

If there’s one thing that can outweigh the city in which a veteran hoisted three Stanley Cups, it’s his hometown. Add the fact that the NHL organization in Kane’s hometown is in a much better position to compete for a Stanley Cup, and it may be all she wrote. In that sense, if Kane replicates Jonathan Toews’ career path, a Blackhawks reunion may never come to fruition.

Kane could do wonders for Blackhawks

It doesn’t take a genie to realize Chicago’s interest in Kane skyrocketed after Bedard underwent offseason shoulder surgery, which will sideline the franchise center for at least the first month of the NHL regular season. Still, Kane wouldn’t simply be a patch for the lineup—he could be the perfect linemate to help Bedard take his game to the next level.

So far, Bedard has been held back by injuries and a shallow roster, where his first-line teammates would mostly be top-nine forwards on the rest of the league’s teams. Even under those conditions, Bedard has stood out, putting up 203 points (75 G, 128 A) through his first three seasons (219 GP).

Blackhawks’ potential top-six lines with Kane

In the event Kane signs with Chicago—and once Bedard returns from injury—this is how the top six could look at the United Center on a nightly basis:

Over a month has passed since Larkin asked out of Detroit after failing to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the 10th straight NHL season. Not many would’ve guessed that by mid-to-late July, Larkin would remain in town, and Steve Yzerman wouldn’t—at least not in his role as executive vice president and general manager. The NHL often accustoms its fans to unexpected twists, but this may be one of the biggest so far this offseason.

With Yzerman now in a senior adviser role, many wonder if there’s a path for Larkin and Detroit to put the issue behind them and keep the disgruntled captain in town. However, such an option may not be on the table—or even under it.

“I don’t know if Dylan Larkin can walk this back. That would be a lot to walk back,” Helene St. James admitted during a recent appearance on TSN’s OverDrive. “It’s been going on now for two months.”

Detroit is upset

Not only did Larkin’s public trade request shine a bad light on the organization, but the timing wasn’t great for the Red Wings either. It gave them one more thing to deal with heading into the NHL Draft while leaving them with few trade options for their captain (Larkin initially presented the team with a three-team trade list, which he expanded to four teams weeks later).

Moreover, according to St. James, Larkin waited for the bigger portion of his salary to be paid before expressing his frustration in the ultimate way.

“The organization is upset with him for asking for a trade after they’ve paid down the chunk of the actual salary, $31 million over three years for that contract,” St. James added. “But I just don’t know even if it’s a different GM. Steve Yzerman still works for the team.“

Larkin’s contract details

Under the eight-year, $69.6 million contract extension Larkin signed back in 2023, the Red Wings’ captain was set to earn salary payments of $10 million, $10 million, and $11 million in the first three years. That amounted to $31 million through the 2025-26 NHL season.

Going forward, Larkin’s salary drops to $8 million through 2028-29. In 2029-30, Larkin will make $7.6 million, and $7 million in 2030-31 before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2031. Through the first three years of the deal, Larkin’s average salary was of $10.5 million. In the next five seasons, it will go down to an average of $7.72 million.

Clearly, Larkin and his camp knew when it was best to have enough. The fact remains, Detroit did little to help its case after missing the playoffs for a straight decade.

Larkin’s trade protection

As for Larkin’s trade protection, he’s under a full no-trade clause for the next two seasons. From the 2028-29 season onward, Larkin will have a modified no-trade clause (10-team trade list).

Based on the latest reports, Larkin has only given Detroit the green light to work out a trade with four teams: the Vegas Golden Knights, Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, and Dallas Stars. It may still not be enough for Detroit, which may cling to the frustrated captain until he gives the club more leeway and room to maneuver.

Larkin’s trade buzz

Working with such a limited pool of teams not only limits the Red Wings’ options, but also hurts their potential return. No team will overpay if it knows it is among such a narrow list. Everybody knows it, including Larkin. At some point, the organization will have to accept the conditions set by the player, or Larkin will have to be more easygoing.

Another alternative is that one of the four franchises given the green light comes forward with an offer too good to refuse. That feels like the least likely scenario at this point in the year.

Nobody knows how long it will take for either to happen. Until either party gives an inch, the mind games and tug-of-war will prevail. The 2026-27 NHL season is still a ways away, and for now, this is the status quo in Motor City.

According to Chris Chelios, Kane’s free-agency decision will come down to the Chicago Blackhawks or the Buffalo Sabres. It makes sense. Kane has called Chicago home for the vast majority of his NHL career, while Buffalo is his actual hometown and where, arguably, the greatest American player first laced up his skates.

Although the Blackhawks weren’t too interested in Toews last summer, Kane’s choice in 2026 does remind many of the former captain’s decision in 2025. Determined to make his return to the league, Toews chose the Winnipeg Jets in order to finally play for his hometown club. After one year back in Manitoba, Toews called it a career.

The current situation is different, mostly because reports suggest Kane is after a long stay with the Blackhawks. Regardless, he could still imitate his former sidekick’s journey if he chooses to return to his hometown in Western New York and play for a Stanley Cup contender in Buffalo. For the time being, Kane can straddle the fence, but at some point, he will have to choose a side.

Blackhawks need firepower

Chicago is well aware Kane isn’t the same electric kid who flew down the wing night in and night out a decade ago. Still, “Showtime” has a vision not many in the NHL can match and an ability to find teammates through traffic and impossible passing lanes. Moreover, Kane has put up more than 55 points in each of the past two seasons despite missing games.

With Bedard set to miss the opening month of the 2026-27 NHL season (offseason shoulder surgery), the Blackhawks have great use for a top-six forward and a strong voice of command. Kane could solve a lot of problems for Chicago, though it would also raise some eyebrows in the process.

Chicago can accommodate Kane

With more than $14 million available in cap space, per PuckPedia, the Hawks have the resources to make it happen. The bigger question appears to be whether they are willing to commit to a multi-year contract with Kane, who will turn 38 on Nov. 19.

In more ways than one, a multi-year deal might actually ease the workload for Kyle Davidson and the front office. As things stand, the Hawks are carrying 14 roster players on expiring contracts (seven UFAs and seven RFAs).

At the same time, the brass might believe that another contract decision is par for the course. When it might as well be the deal-breaker in a Kane-to-Chicago reunion, however, it may be wise for the Hawks to seriously consider a longer contract.

Though both rookies faced off in the 2026 College Football National Championship Game, there may be more differences than similarities between Mendoza (22) and Beck (24). Most importantly, Mendoza is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. That puts him in line for a ludicrous rookie contract that is planets away from Beck’s $7.4 million deal, as the latter was a third-round selection (65th overall) by the Cardinals.

As reported by Reuters, Mendoza is guaranteed a four-year, $57.2 million contract under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Still, while his earnings are virtually set in stone, he has yet to put pen to paper. The reason for the delay? Mendoza and the Raiders have yet to reach an agreement regarding the signing bonus.

Signing bonus dispute

According to CBS Sports, Mendoza and his camp are seeking a single lump-sum payment, which isn’t ideal from the Raiders’ point of view. The rookie quarterback isn’t interested in receiving smaller installments over time. Per Reuters, Mendoza is set for $38.1 million signing bonus.

For some time now, lump-sum bonuses have become the norm for the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL. Joe Burrow was paid the entirety of his signing bonus when he signed his rookie deal with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020, and every No. 1 pick since has followed the same path. The last first overall pick not to receive his signing bonus in a single lump sum was Kyler Murray in 2019 with the Arizona Cardinals.

The Raiders are used to paying signing bonuses in smaller installments and might not want to abandon that tradition. However, it’s also been a while since they selected first overall (2007, when they picked JaMarcus Russell). Times have changed, and this is the new norm, even if Raider Nation doesn’t love it.

Time’s running out

Beck and the Cardinals reached an agreement at the buzzer, and perhaps the Raiders will do the same with Mendoza. Arizona’s rookies reported to training camp on July 22, the same day Beck was signed to his rookie contract.

As for Las Vegas’ first-year players, they must report to the team facilities on July 23. Whether Mendoza will be signed by then remains uncertain. One thing is clear: if he doesn’t sign his contract, he can’t participate in training camp. And a rookie quarterback expected to start from Day 1 can’t afford such a start, no matter the college football pedigree he brings to the NFL.

According to a report, Kane is genuinely interested in returning to Chicago. However, if he is to go down that emotional path, he wants it to be worth his while. And while that would often mean being paid a king’s ransom, in this case it could have more to do with the length of the contract. If Kane heads back to Chicago, he may want it to be where he ends his NHL career—and that doesn’t necessarily mean he will hang up the skates after the 2026-27 campaign.

“The issue for Kane, if he comes back to Chicago, is he may not want to leave again, but still want to play a couple of more seasons,” Al Cimaglia, former Blackhawks contributor, stated on his X account.

Kane is tired of being on the move

Although he’s spent the last three seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, Kane couldn’t really call Motor City home as he was only signed to one-year deals. Every summer Kane spent in Detroit, he didn’t really know if he’d be back in the fall. The 37-year-old may want to do things differently now. And Chicago may be the place most willing to fulfill his desire.

Although the Blackhawks have expressed their future-focused vision time and again, they have had a change of heart, especially after Connor Bedard suffered an offseason injury. Perhaps, having an old fan favorite back isn’t the worst thing in the world, even if it means going back on their word.

Kyle Davidson’s statement

Amid the loud buzz surrounding Kane’s potential return to the City of Big Shoulders, general manager Kyle Davidson didn’t ignore the speculation and addressed it head-on with a sincere message.

“[Kane] has earned the right to take his time and make a decision. We’ll await his decision, but he knows our door is always open,” Davidson said in dialogue with TSN OverDrive. “He’s a Blackhawk at heart for life, even if he’s not wearing our jersey. We’ve got a great deal of reverence, respect, and love for Kane.”

Davidson’s latest comments are quite different from what he said back in 2024. Hindsight is 20/20, but even Davidson may be surprised as to how much his mind has changed in two years.

“[Kane] did have a really good year. I think we’re all really happy to see that. [But] we made some really tough decisions on some longstanding players. I don’t foresee us going back on that,” Davidson had said to Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times at the 2024 NHL Combine.

Kane’s options

For the time being, reports indicate Kane is down to two choices: the Chicago Blackhawks and the Buffalo Sabres. Both cities mean a lot to “Showtime,” with the Second City being where he started his NHL journey and won three Stanley Cups, while the City of Good Neighbors is where the Western New Yorker was born.

The Sabres give Kane a better chance at chasing another Cup, but they may not be able to commit to a longer term the way the Hawks might. Either way, and whichever organization Kane signs with, it won’t be an easy decision for the 37-year-old, who will turn 38 on Nov. 19.

Casemiro brings much-needed balance to the middle of the park, as well as experience. Although much has been said about Inter Miami’s knack for veteran players, they have missed a strong voice of command in midfield. Rest assured, Casemiro will make his voice heard. And if he plays at the level he did during soccer’s biggest tournament, then the sky may truly be the limit for the Herons. With him, Guillermo Hoyos can put together a formidable starting XI.

Obviously, Messi’s absence—he won’t play against the Chicago Fire in Inter Miami’s first game after the season resumed—is huge, but it’s only temporary. Soon enough, the Argentine ace will be back, along with Rodrigo De Paul, and things will go back to the way they used to be for Inter Miami.

When asked by Bolavip, Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter said he wouldn’t be surprised if Messi and De Paul played against them. It’s now been confirmed they won’t, but the same can’t be said for when Chicago and Inter Miami meet again in MLS on Sept. 9 at Soldier Field. Then, the Herons could finally field their ideal projected lineup, which has no shortage of firepower.

Inter Miami’s potential starting XI

On paper, there will only be one change made to the lineup. However, the impact it may have can’t be overlooked. Most likely, Hoyos will stick with the 4-3-3 formation, which makes Inter Miami an attack-minded side, while relying on Casemiro to keep things under control. The starting lineup could look like this:

Dayne St. Clair (GK); Ian Fray, Gonzalo Lujan, Micael, Sergio Reguilon; Casemiro, Rodrigo De Paul, Telasco Segovia; Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, German Berterame.

The right-back position is one that could go one of two ways. The starting job is mostly a toss-up between Ian Fray and Facundo Mura. Considering the fatigue sustained by fullbacks—tasked with running up and down the wing—it’s a position that is constantly changing. The same can be said about left-back, but Reguilon appears to have the upper hand over Noah Allen.

Casemiro’s impact

With Casemiro establishing himself in the central defensive midfield role, the Herons may find the missing piece to their puzzle. Obviously, the familiar faces would lead the attack up front, but they would have a lynchpin in the middle to keep them balanced.

Of the many adjectives available to describe Inter Miami, balanced usually isn’t one, as the Herons often find themselves in shootouts, just like their last game before the World Cup hiatus, which ended in a 6-4 win. Time will tell if Casemiro’s arrival will change that or not.

“The New York Rangers are hiring Jonathan Quick as director of goaltending development,” as reported by Mollie Walker of The New York Post on her X account.

After 20 NHL seasons, during which he hoisted the Stanley Cup three times and spent the last three campaigns in the Big Apple, Quick decided to retire after the 2025-26 season. However, he isn’t done with hockey just yet. Thus, he will be staying close to the rink—and, more specifically, the crease—where he made a living and became arguably the best American goalie in league history.

Revamped development group

The Rangers have heard the buzz. After struggling to develop many of their recent top picks into key contributors, they’ve finally had enough. In early May, New York announced Tanner Glass’ arrival as the new director of player development.

Now, the Broadway Blueshirts are adding more familiar faces to work alongside Glass. Quick will be tasked with overseeing the organization’s goaltending prospects. Moreover, Derick Brassard is also joining the group as a player development assistant, according to The Athletic.

The Rangers know just how high the stakes are. Indeed, they may be giving president and general manager Chris Drury two more seasons of leeway, but they want results, especially in player development. That’s why Glass, Quick, and Brassard have been brought in.

Quick’s new job

Under his reported new role with the Rangers, Quick will oversee the organization’s goalie prospects, likely including Dylan Garand, who is poised to be the third-string netminder during the 2026-27 NHL season but could very well earn a bigger role.

Whether that happens, or does so sooner rather than later, could very well be determined by Quick’s work alongside the 24-year-old, who was Quick’s teammate last season. Other goalies under Quick’s supervision will be Callum Tung and 2027 third-round pick Danai Shaiikov. Needless to say, Quick will have his hands full.

NY Rangers’ goalie room

Still, he may not be under as much pressure as Glass and Brassard, at least as long as Igor Shesterkin is content to stay in Manhattan and his presence keeps the spotlight away from concerns about the team’s goaltending depth. As long as Shesterkin is in net, the Blueshirts can out-goalie any team on any given night, and that’s enough to keep fans happy.

Moreover, Joonas Korpisalo’s arrival also provides a confidence boost in goal. With such an experienced tandem, the pressure isn’t on Garand to blossom into an NHL regular overnight, thus giving Quick more time to work.

For the retired goalie, it will also be his first experience in such a role, so he will need some time to settle in and get a handle of things. He’s been inside the building for a while, he knows the lay of the land, but this is still a new chapter for Quick. The Rangers would be wise to remember that.

Determined not to let the trees hide the forest, Infantino took to social media with a congratulatory—some might say commiserative—message for the runners-up, who now turn their sights to the future and the 2030 World Cup, where Argentina’s starting XI may be without Messi.

“What an incredible FIFA World Cup for Argentina! Unforgettable comebacks and a fighting spirit inspired millions and gave football fans around the world moments they will never forget,” Infantino wrote on his Instagram account.

“Returning to the FIFA World Cup Final after lifting the trophy in 2022 is a testament to your lasting excellence. Thank you for helping make this World Cup so special and for competing with such passion until the end.”

Infantino’s message timing

Infantino’s message congratulating Argentina comes at an opportune moment. It arrived amid worldwide criticism aimed at the national team—which Alexis Mac Allister ironically thanked after the 2026 World Cup.

Meanwhile another household name on the team, Rodrigo De Paul, took aim at conspiracists after the final. Instead, Infantino shined a light on the things Argentina did right rather than focusing on the controversies, most of which extended beyond Messi and his fellow countrymen’s control.

Infantino’s message for Spain

Before conspiracists cling to the message for Messi and Argentina to promote the idea that FIFA president Gianni Infantino favored La Albiceleste, it’s worth noting that he dedicated a post to each of the top four teams in the 2026 World Cup final standings.

“Sixteen years after lifting the trophy in South Africa, Spain are FIFA World Cup champions once again,” Infantino congratulated Spain. “Football has a new golden chapter to celebrate, and this achievement will be remembered for generations. Celebrate with your families, your supporters and your nation. You have earned your place in football history.”

Although the Spaniards are taking it with humor, as Lamine Yamal did while adding some fuel to the fire during the championship parade, Gavi has now set the record straight with a conscious message about his skirmish with Paredes and other Argentines after Spain won the 2026 World Cup.

“No, no, if I’m being honest I do not think [Paredes and the Argentine players involved in the brawl] should be suspended,” Gavi admitted to reporters back in his hometown of Los Palacios in Spain.

“I understand it doesn’t set the best example for children, but football has always had a more aggressive and intense side. For me, the most logic thing would have been to send [Paredes] off, and that should’ve been the end of it.” Even in victory, Gavi was very respectful, just as he was with his ultimate message of respect for Lionel Messi.

Paredes has yet to comment

Although he did take to social media after the 2026 World Cup final, Paredes hasn’t spoken about the hot topic regarding the postgame incident with Eric Garcia and Gavi. At this point, it’s safe to assume Paredes won’t mention it, not while the wound is still so fresh and open for Argentina.

Moreover, even though FIFA has reportedly made a decision on Paredes’ conduct, it’s possible that anything the Argentine midfielder comments could come back to bite him.

In pure Miranda Warning fashion, anything Paredes might say could be used against him. Perhaps, the better option is to stay silent and let the days go by. Maybe Gavi, Spain, and fans will forget or let it go, though it seems unlikely.

No red card for Paredes

Although initial reports indicated referee Slavko Vincic showed Paredes a red card after the final whistle—which is possible under the Laws of the Game—that has now been confirmed to be untrue. Thus, Paredes has gotten away with the ugly postgame fight.

As a result, he will not go through the trouble players face after receiving a red card at a World Cup. Paredes will receive no suspension or disciplinary sanction and is eligible to play for Argentina in upcoming fixtures.

Gavi may not agree with the decision, but he has bigger fish to fry and celebrations to attend as Spain celebrate their second World Cup.

Indeed, the 2026-27 NHL season is paramount for New York, but the way the Rangers have gone about their business suggests the president and general manager should be relatively safe through the upcoming campaign—if not beyond.

“By the time the 2027-28 season rolls around, the grace period will be over,” Vince Mercogliano stated on an article on The Athletic. Because the Rangers still own the rights to their first-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, they could live with a draft-lottery finish in the upcoming campaign. However, that could be as far as the patience runs for Drury’s tenure.

NY Rangers’ draft picks

New York’s offseason paints a clear picture of how the organization sees the future. The Rangers parted with their first-round selection in 2028 in the trade for Pavel Dorofeyev, as well as the 2030 first-rounder, which was sent to the Vancouver Canucks in the Marcus Pettersson trade. Both are conditional (top-10 protected), but the point remains.

The Broadway Blueshirts are setting a two-year window for their retool. The goal remains to become a playoff team next season, but even if they fall short, it wouldn’t be catastrophic.

Moreover, if they end up with yet another lottery pick in 2027-28, the Rangers could still keep their first-rounder and then, finally, enter a sink-or-swim campaign in 2028-29, because they would give up their first-round selection in 2029 regardless of where they finish in the standings.

When every moving piece is put together, it indicates Drury could have a two-year cushion. There is a scenario in which the Rangers carry out Drury’s plan without the president and GM, but the latest signs from the organization may put such a path to rest.

Drury is under contract

Not too long ago, Drury and the Blueshirts agreed to a multi-year contract extension (in April 2025). A lot has happened since then; key players have come and gone, and confidence in Drury may have wavered. Still, it’s one of those topics that can only be known for certain once an official announcement is made.

For the time being, fans should go about their days under the presumption that Drury is in New York to stay.

“[Was the officiating unfair?] No, we lost because Spain were better than us,” Scaloni confessed to reporters as he arrived at his hometown of Pujato in Argentina. “We’ve got to admit it, they played better. [Admitting that] will make us better in the long run.”

Although Scaloni believes Enzo Fernandez’s first yellow card was avoidable, he didn’t blame Vincic for the loss. It pains Argentina, but Spain were the better side in the final and, therefore, deserving World Cup winners. Despite Marc Cucurella rubbing salt in Argentina’s wounds during Spain’s parade, Scaloni isn’t above giving credit where it’s due, and he praised Luis de la Fuente’s side.

Exhausted Argentina

Scaloni also mentioned how Argentina arrived at the game battle-weary after exhausting and nail-biting showdowns in every round of the 2026 World Cup knockout stage. That fatigue was visible, as Spain appeared to outnumber Argentina in every area of the field.

In reality, it was because the Spaniards were better positioned and far more rested, allowing them to cover areas of the pitch that the Argentines simply couldn’t reach as quickly.
