Moreover, gestures like Georgina’s latest gift to Antonela make that much easier. As for Ronaldo and Messi, it would likely take them playing together on the same team to bring their fans together. Unfortunately, that seems nearly impossible with both of them in the latter stages of their careers.

That was the million-dollar question. Considering how Christian Pulisic defended FIFA’s decision before USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino celebrated the overturning of Balogun’s ban, it looked like the United States would gladly include their newly eligible striker—and leading goalscorer at the 2026 World Cup—among the starters for the game against Belgium. And that they did. Balogun will be playing from the start for the USMNT against Belgium.

Gearing up for the elimination game between the USMNT and Belgium in Seattle (Lumen Field), both sides are well aware of what’s at stake. The Americans know what will happen if the USMNT wins, ties, or loses against Belgium, but it could all be in between question marks as Balogun will plays, and Belgium will contest that decision.

Belgium made it clear they won’t accept the legitimacy of the game if Balogun, who was shown a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, is allowed to play. Still, Pochettino and the USMNT aren’t letting the opportunity slip through their fingers. They were given the green light by soccer’s governing body, so why would they stop in their tracks?

Even if they risk Belgium taking legal action after the game, the Americans likely feel they have a much better chance of winning with Balogun on the pitch. And after watching FIFA make an extraordinary decision to benefit them, the Stars and Stripes might feel untouchable. Who’s to say Belgium will have any success in their claim against Balogun’s eligibility anyways?

USA’s confirmed lineup vs Belgium

All things considered, the USMNT is playing with house money, and it might have made little sense not to start Balogun against Belgium. Morality may have to be cast aside when survival in the biggest tournament in soccer is on the line.

Thus, the USMNT will put together the following starting XI to face Belgium at Seattle Stadium: Matt Freese (GK); Sergiño Dest, Alex Freeman, Tim Ream (C), Chris Richards, Antonee Robinson; Tyler Adams, Malik Tillman, Weston McKennie; Christian Pulisic, Folarin Balogun.

“[Yamal] needs to get used to criticism as quickly as possible if he wants to have a long career. But I also think he should focus on what he truly loves: the love from the fans, the passion of the supporters, and the atmosphere inside the stadium. That’s what I learned over time, that you should connect with the people who truly love you, and you should also have passion for what you do.

It’s easy to say now after seeing the end result, but it was also true before Guimaraes even had his attempt denied by Orjan Nyland.

Vinicius has scored 13 penalties in 19 attempts during his career, according to Transfermarkt. For Brazil, his numbers are even more head-scratching. Vini has converted just one of the three penalties he has taken while wearing the Verde Amarela.

Still, on the biggest stages, fans around the world expect their best players to rise to the occasion, regardless of what the stats say. Neymar, despite battling injuries and barely playing any minutes, did just that by scoring from the spot. Needless to say, both those losses hurt—and still do—more than the recent misstep against Norway. Looking at the glass half full, a fact remains: Brazil have never fallen short of the Round of 16 since the World Cup expanded beyond 20 national teams.

Still, reaching the Round of 16 only to be eliminated isn’t something Brazil will celebrate. They have won five World Cup titles and are far too big in the soccer world to cherish something so minuscule.

“This provision states that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee may decide to suspend the enforcement of a previously imposed disciplinary sanction. In addition, further sanctions may be imposed.’

Belgium want to be treated fairly
