The last time the Maple Leafs drafted first overall? In 2016, when they selected none other than Auston Matthews, who has recently been linked to trade speculation. While drafting McKenna could help change the narrative in Toronto following a rough 2025–26 NHL season, a report suggests the Maple Leafs may still need to show more in order to convince Matthews to stay put.

“Obviously, the first overall pick is a good sign. There’s a lot more that has to happen with respect to [Matthews]. There’s a lot more that has to happen with the Leafs, in terms of what additional moves they’re going to make,” David Pagnotta said during an appearance on Leafs Morning Take. “Across the board, these are all positive signs.”

Maple Leafs have work to do

Not all of the Maple Leafs’ struggles will magically disappear after the 2026 NHL Draft (June 26–27). Some might argue the work is only just beginning for the revamped front office in The Six.

Having a strong free-agency period will be crucial. In the meantime, the Buds will have to keep their heads on a swivel, as a trade request from Matthews could catch them off guard at any moment.

Fortunately for Toronto, four lottery balls made life much easier and allowed the organization to breathe a sigh of relief. If there truly was a serious danger of the captain jumping ship, McKenna appearing on the horizon may have the Maple Leafs shouting, “Land ho!”

Toronto needs more help aside from McKenna

Needless to say, drafting McKenna (or Ivar Stenberg) with the first overall pick would go a long way for the Maple Leafs to bounce back after their 32-36-14 finish in 2025-26. Still, no team that ever finishes in second-to-last place in a conference is just one player away from becoming a Stanley Cup contender. Matthews knows that, so he wants to see his club actually invest to overturn the recent struggles.

Toronto needs help across the board. Trying to convince Maple Leafs fans that drafting McKenna isn’t the right move would be senseless—and probably a lost cause. Still, there’s a legitimate argument to be made that the Buds’ biggest need actually lies on the blue line—and not on the wing, where McKenna makes a living.

The Maple Leafs could certainly use a high-end defensive prospect who could eventually join the team’s top pairing at Scotiabank Arena. Perhaps a right-handed defenseman like Chase Reid would be a perfect fit in Toronto. Had the Leafs landed the No. 2 pick, there might be a more serious debate about that possibility. However, with the first overall selection, the odds of them drafting anyone other than McKenna appear extremely low.

Maple Leafs’ prospects

As things stand, Toronto’s top prospects are winger Easton Cowan, right-shot defenseman Ben Danford, and goaltender Dennis Hildeby. The moment the Buds announce their first-round pick at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, that player will immediately jump to the top of the organization’s prospect rankings—whether it’s McKenna or Stenberg, the two most obvious candidates.

Anything can happen, but it appears GM John Chayka and senior executive advisor of hockey operations Mats Sundin won’t overthink the decision and will instead select the player who has long been considered the consensus No. 1 pick.

“Today we had another disagreement. During the argument, I accidentally hit a table, causing a small cut on my forehead that required a routine visit to the hospital. [Tchouameni] never hit me, I didn’t hit him either. Still, I reckon it’s easier for many to believe we threw hands at each other, but that didn’t happen,” Valverde said in a long statement through his social media.

With his post, Valverde quieted—or at least attempted to quiet—the noise surrounding Real Madrid, which has become unbearable. Especially as La Casa Blanca prepare for a crucial clash against Barcelona, in which their longtime Catalan rivals need just one point to clinch the 2025–26 La Liga title.

Real Madrid will intervene

Whether Tchouameni hit Valverde, Valverde hit Tchouameni, or the Uruguayan simply slipped and struck his forehead, it’s clear there is tension within the dressing room. For a club as massive as Los Merengues, this kind of drama has no place anywhere near the organization.

As a result of the recent pandemonium that broke loose in Valdebebas, Real Madrid are opening disciplinary proceedings against Valverde and Tchouameni in hopes of putting an end to one of the most frustrating seasons La Casa Blanca has endured in a very long time.

Frustration at an all-time high

Still, Real Madrid appear to have become a hotbed for drama, with Florentino Perez’s side seemingly jumping from the frying pan into the fire. A trophyless season has put players on the brink, and it all erupted as Valverde and Tchouameni reportedly exchanged words and hard tackles in practice.

“I’m sorry. I’m truly sorry because this situation hurts me, this moment we’re going through is painful,” Valverde admitted in his statement, perfectly summing up the sentiment behind closed doors in Madrid. Valverde—regarded as Real Madrid’s best player this season—went as far as to say: “We’ve wasted another year.”

Right before El Clasico

Somehow, some way, Real Madrid must change the narrative on Sunday when they take on Barca at a packed Spotify Camp Nou. Valverde won’t play, and it remains to be seen whether Tchouameni will feature or if he’ll be sidelined due to disciplinary action.

Regardless, if Los Merengues cannot climb out of the hole they dug for themselves, they could end the campaign in the worst possible fashion: watching Barcelona clinch the league title and celebrate in front of them while walking off the pitch crestfallen.

Santiago Bernabeu put it best: “Real Madrid’s shirt is white. It can be covered in mud, sweat, or blood, but never in shame.” Unfortunately for Los Merengues, the latest scandal has stained it with the latter two.

“Sorsby’s name hasn’t been in the conversation,” Peter Schrager stated on The Pat McAfee Show. “I’m told that the Browns are focused on Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders right now. They are so ecstatic about their draft.”

Even though Sorsby is a name to watch and Cleveland has long been rumored as a destination for virtually every available quarterback in the NFL, perhaps the tide has changed. With Monken at the helm, the Browns may finally be on the verge of finding stability. The league’s most beleaguered franchise could certainly use some calmer days for a change.

Why Sorsby could become available

It’s one of the biggest storylines in the league following the 2026 NFL Draft. After transferring from Cincinnati to Texas Tech, Sorsby was expected to become the starting quarterback in Lubbock. However, he could instead lose his eligibility after an NCAA investigation reportedly uncovered multiple bets placed by Sorsby—including several on Indiana Hoosiers games back in 2023, when he was still in Bloomington.

The NCAA prohibits student-athletes from betting on any NCAA-sanctioned sport. In cases where athletes wager on their own teams, permanent ineligibility becomes a very real possibility. As a result, Sorsby could be banned from ever playing college football again.

The NFL supplemental draft—which is held exclusively for players who lose their eligibility after the original draft—appears to be the safest route for Sorsby, who has reportedly entered a rehabilitation facility. However, even if he enters the supplemental draft and is selected by a team, most analysts believe the NFL would hand down a suspension of its own to the 22-year-old quarterback.

Will Sorsby enter the supplemental draft?

As things stand, Sorsby has yet to announce his decision, and he has until June 30 to do so. If he does declare and is indeed selected, Sorsby would be the first player to come out of the supplemental draft since safety Jalen Thompson was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in 2019.

In the grand scheme of things, whether he enters the NFL supplemental draft or not feels like a minor detail. Considering a gambling addiction is reportedly involved—and that Sorsby is now receiving treatment—it puts everything into perspective.

Still, from a football standpoint, several teams may show interest in him. However, for once, the Browns seem uninterested in acquiring yet another signal-caller. Cleveland seems content with a QB1 competition between Sanders and Watson and believes it is set with Dillon Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green rounding out the quarterback room in The Land.

The Giants announced that defensive linemen Elijah Chatman and Marlon Tuipulotu have been released. The move made sense, as New York currently employs a surplus of defensive ends and tackles. Since moving on from Lawrence, the G-Men have gone on a shopping spree in an effort to make up for the loss of their star defender.

Now, the Giants were left with little choice but to trim some of that depth. As a result, Chatman and Tuipulotu are now free agents. The former’s release had been reported and was somewhat expected, while the latter had signed a reserve/future contract with New York back in January.

NY Giants’ depth on defensive line

As it stands, the Giants have 10 defensive linemen under contract. Since Harbaugh tends to favor a 3-4 scheme, that means New York could put together 120 different combinations along the defensive line. Talk about keeping opponents on their toes. However, Big Blue won’t carry this current group into the campaign—more moves are expected before the 2026 NFL season.

For the time being, though, the G-Men boast the following options: D.J. Reader, Shelby Harris, and Leki Fotu, all of whom were signed shortly after New York traded Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals. The defensive line room is rounded out by Roy Robertson-Harris, Darius Alexander, Bobby Jamison-Travis, Sam Roberts, Zacch Pickens, Anquin Barnes Jr., and Ben Barten.

Giants’ offseason keeps up the pace

What starts hectic often ends the same way. The Giants’ preparation for the 2026 NFL season probably won’t be an exception. More likely than not, the releases of Chatman and Tuipulotu won’t be the final moves of a busy offseason in East Rutherford.

John Harbaugh and company have now gotten the ball rolling. The Giants announced they have parted ways with wide receiver Courtney Jackson. It’s not surprising, considering Jackson has yet to make his NFL debut and New York is facing a surplus of receiving targets. Jackson’s release may only be the tip of the iceberg.

Many fans believe his release may have something to do with Odell Beckham Jr. and his potential return to East Rutherford—seven years after his infamous trade to the Cleveland Browns. There might be some fire behind the smoke, although the Giants no longer appear urged to sign Odell.

Giants have enough WR options

Albeit conspiracy theories will continue to grow louder in the NFL, the truth is the G-Men must make room regardless of whether OBJ returns or not. With or without Beckham, the Giants could cut other WRs such as Jalin Hyatt and Isaiah Hodgins.

As it stands, New York has 12 wide receivers under contract. Organizations usually roll into the NFL season with six or seven—no pun intended—wideouts on the active roster. Needless to say, Harbaugh and his staff are up for some tough conversations.

Giants’ WR depth chart

Provided he doesn’t miss a step in his return from a torn ACL and meniscus, third-year star Malik Nabers is expected to resume his role as Jaxson Dart’s No. 1 target in 2026. According to Ourlads.com, Darius Slayton is listed as WR2, while Darnell Mooney is projected to start in the slot. Rookie Malachi Fields could certainly shake up the depth chart with a strong start to his NFL career.

Wide receivers such as Calvin Austin III and Gunner Olszewski may have an advantage in making the 53-man roster thanks to their contributions on special teams. Still, the sixth receiver spot is the one that could pose the toughest challenge for Harbaugh. Players like Hyatt, Hodgins, Ryan Miller, Beaux Collins, Dalen Cambre, and Xavier Gipson could all find themselves limited to practice-squad roles—or waived outright.

What’s next for NY Giants?

Needless to say, the Giants are in for a challenging preseason. New York may still add a piece here and there, but it appears the team’s spending spree is mostly over. For the time being, the G-Men will limit themselves to window-shopping.

In the meantime, the Giants will continue figuring out what their offense will look like in 2026 while awaiting any updates regarding Beckham Jr.’s potential return to the Big Apple.

Talks between Bedard and Chicago have been slow, with few updates as of late. However, things may be quietly simmering. With the NHL’s confirmation of the salary cap spike—which had already been reported and expected league-wide—it’s safe to assume extension negotiations are set to pick up pace.

“This is big for extension negotiations,” as stated by @NHLRumourReport on X. “Would not be surprised if we see some in the coming weeks now that the numbers are solidified.”

New salary cap details

As reported by Elliotte Friedman, the NHL has announced that the salary cap floor has been set at $76.9 million. The midpoint has been adjusted to $90.4 million, with the salary cap ceiling spiking to $104 million. In the 2025–26 NHL season, the floor was $70.9 million, with a $95.5 million ceiling. Moreover, the league has announced that the maximum salary will now be $20.8 million.

Kirill Kaprizov signed the biggest contract in league history ($17 million average annual value) in his eight-year, $136 million deal, which will begin next season. Under his current contract, he is set to earn an annual salary of $19.1 million in 2026–27, per PuckPedia.

Bedard’s contract projections

Bedard is expected to put pen to paper on a top-of-the-market contract, but all signs suggest he won’t demand a deal of that magnitude. Still, after playing through his three-year, $2.85 million entry-level contract, it’s time for him to earn a salary aligned with his role in Chicago—especially as he’s set to become the franchise’s next captain.

According to an April report from the Chicago Sun-Times, Bedard could sign for an AAV in the $13.5–15 million range. There might be a bigger dilemma surrounding the term of the contract. Starting Sept. 16, eight-year deals will become a thing of the past in the NHL.

When could Bedard re-sign with Hawks?

Both Bedard and the Blackhawks have expressed a willingness to make ends meet, and there should be no drama as the two sides work something out. Bedard is taking his time, Chicago won’t rush him, and a deal could be finalized at any point in the offseason.

Now that the league has revealed the full details of the 2026–27 salary cap, there are no lingering uncertainties that might make Bedard’s camp anxious. Everything is clear—Bedard knows what to ask for, and the Blackhawks will—perhaps with a few huffs here and there—agree and get it done.

“Truth is, Hyatt and Hodgins have been on the 2026 roster bubble since the second the 2025 season ended,” as stated by Ed Valentine on Big Blue View. “The hiring of Harbaugh as head coach made their mountain tougher to climb because neither contributes to special teams.”

The G-Men have already addressed their struggles at the wideout position with the additions of Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin III. Moreover, they selected Malachi Fields—whom the Giants have a clear role for—out of Notre Dame in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

If New York indeed brings Beckham Jr. back, it might effectively be all she wrote for Hyatt and Hodgins. Perhaps, the writing is already on the wall, even if Odell never returns to The Big Apple.

Hyatt’s numbers

Although the Giants could have an alternative plan if Beckham Jr. doesn’t sign with them, Hodgins and Hyatt may still not be part of the picture. Both have been in New York for a while, but time might be up.

Hyatt was selected by the Giants with the 73rd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Since, he’s appeared in 41 games. However, after 17 and 16-game seasons in 2023 and 2024, Hyatt was limited to just 8 appearances in 2025. Combining his last two years, Hyatt totals 13 receptions for 97 yards. The product out of Tennessee has yet to score his first touchdown in the league.

Hodgins’ journey with Giants

As for Hodgins, he was originally selected with a sixth-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, he wouldn’t make his NFL debut until the 2022 season. The Giants claimed him off waivers in November 2022, and Hodgins responded by catching 33 passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns, earning himself a one-year extension.

In 2023, he played in all 17 regular-season games for New York but tallied only 21 catches for 230 yards and three touchdowns. The G-Men would eventually cut him during the 2024 campaign. However, after brief stints with the San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers—during which he didn’t appear in a game—Hodgins made his way back to East Rutherford midway through the 2025 season when New York signed him off Pittsburgh’s practice squad.

Hodgins appeared in seven games last season, registering 10 catches for 115 receiving yards and a touchdown. In March 2026, the Giants re-signed him to a one-year deal. Still, with the latest additions, that job security may be hanging by a thread.

“It doesn’t figure that there will be a place for a 5-foot-10, 280-pound defensive tackle who doesn’t hold up well against the run because of his size. Chatman has been a nice story for the Giants, but his time might be up,” as stated by Ed Valentine of Big Blue View.

This report may include a hyperbole, as ESPN lists Chatman at 6-foot. Regardless of the inches’ difference, his impact on the Giants‘ defensive line has been minimal, and it’s not ridiculous to believe he could be cut before John Harbaugh and company put together the 53-men roster for the 2026 NFL campaign.

Chatman’s stats with NY Giants

The Giants’ projected starting defense for 2026 is one that sends chills down the spine of every offensive coordinator. The beleaguered unit may finally find some stability in the Big Apple. However, Chatman may not be part of the picture.

Through 22 games with the New York Giants (17 in the 2024 NFL season and five in the 2025 campaign), Chatman has recorded 24 total tackles (12 assisted and 12 solo), 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, and a fumble recovery.

However, his most encouraging numbers came during his first year in East Rutherford. In 2025, his already limited role was further reduced, and as a result, his numbers were far from jumping off the page.

Chatman spent five years at the collegiate level, playing for the SMU Mustangs. He appeared in 60 games during his NCAA career, recording 98 solo tackles (148 combined), 34 tackles for loss, and 13.5 sacks.

Chatman went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft. New York signed him as a UDFA, but it hasn’t panned out. Chatman is signed through the 2026 campaign, but with a cap hit of $1.075 million, it’s not as though that would stop New York from parting ways with him.

“Gavin McKenna won’t be on Team Canada’s roster for the Men’s World Championship. A group decision involving Hockey Canada and McKenna’s representatives feel it’s best to focus on the NHL combine,” Darren Dreger of TSN stated on his X account.

What’s more shocking than the fact McKenna won’t represent the Maple Leaf is that it was a mutual decision between the two parties involved. McKenna’s camp and Hockey Canada believe it’s best for the projected No. 1 pick to stay in North America and prepare for the NHL Combine and Draft.

Maple Leafs may have played a role in decision

Although the Toronto Maple Leafs have avoided committing to McKenna, the Buds’ influence may be showing—especially considering Hockey Canada’s management includes former Maple Leafs GMs Brad Treliving and Kyle Dubas, as well as Jason Spezza, who played for Toronto and served as a special assistant to the GM under Dubas back in 2022–23.

Perhaps the Buds had a hand in keeping McKenna on this side of the Atlantic and safe from potential setbacks or injuries while competing against some of the best players in the world. After all, the Maple Leafs are set to pick first overall for the third time in franchise history in 2026, and they aren’t letting anything throw a wrench in the works.

Although reports hinted that the hiring of John Chayka pushed Auston Matthews further away from the Leafs, winning the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery likely put an end to those concerns. Needless to say, every time Toronto has owned the first overall pick, it has worked out just fine.

The Maple Leafs have selected first overall twice in NHL history. The first time came in 1985, when they selected Wendel Clark, who went on to score 260 goals and tally 181 assists for a total of 441 points in 588 appearances for the Buds. The second time Toronto picked first in the NHL Draft was exactly a decade ago, when it selected Matthews, who was coming off a one-year stint in Switzerland’s National League. The current captain and franchise leading goal scorer requires no introduction.

The Buds don’t need the third time to be the charm—just another franchise-saving decision. McKenna might be doing everything by the book, leaving no doubts for the Leafs that he is the right choice at first overall. Still, many fans and analysts would have liked to see McKenna on the international stage, playing alongside the likes of Macklin Celebrini and the star-studded Canadian roster.

McKenna misses Worlds, Stenberg has yet to decide

With the 2026 IIHF World Championship (May 15–31) coming up, it remains to be seen whether Swedish prospect Ivar Stenberg—considered the second-best prospect by most, with some even rating him ahead of McKenna—will join Tre Kronor and represent his home country on the world stage.

Stenberg holds an advantage, as the tournament will be held in Switzerland, meaning he faces a much shorter trip than McKenna would. Perhaps Stenberg can improve his draft stock in the international tournament, so whether McKenna is making the right decision also remains to be seen.

However, GM Chayka steered away from announcing his organization’s intentions. When asked about the Maple Leafs’ upcoming first overall selection, the 36-year-old executive played his cards close to the chest.

“We haven’t had scouting meetings yet,” Chayka said, as reported by Chris Johnston. “Second day on the job.” Toronto’s cryptic response has built suspense around who will be the first player taken off the board in the 2026 Upper Deck NHL Draft.

Moreover, Chayka’s comment fuels reports around the league that Swedish winger Ivar Stenberg could emerge as the No. 1 pick. That would mean the prospect of a club like the New York Rangers drafting McKenna isn’t off the table, despite the Maple Leafs holding the first overall pick.

Maple Leafs could draft Stenberg

Contrary to what happened in 2023 and 2024 (Connor Bedard and Macklin Celebrini), the 2026 draft class doesn’t have a lock to go first overall. Mostly because neither of the top two prospects are centers. Indeed, McKenna is widely seen as the best player available, but there’s been growing buzz around Stenberg, who has performed well in a professional league (SHL) as a teenager.

Moreover, the Maple Leafs are now being run by Chayka and Sundin. Many analysts and fans believe that if there’s ever an organization that could lean toward Stenberg, it might be Toronto, which has named Swedish hockey legend Sundin as senior executive advisor of hockey operations.

Crucial decision for Maple Leafs

It seems that whichever prospect the Buds select, they can’t go wrong. Selecting McKenna would be the easier choice. If he doesn’t pan out, the outcry won’t be as loud as it would be if Toronto selects Stenberg and he doesn’t meet expectations.

The Maple Leafs are also in dire need of defensive help in their prospect pipeline, but it feels virtually impossible that they’d take a blueliner first overall. The odds of them trading down aren’t any better, either.

Thus, it seems the choice will come down to McKenna and Stenberg. Perhaps there isn’t even a decision to make. Maybe Toronto has already figured out who it wants, and Chayka is just playing things close to the vest. When it comes to the NHL, nothing is ever that simple.

McKenna vs. Stenberg: Stats comparison

McKenna spent the 2025-26 season at the NCAA level with the Penn State Nittany Lions. His arrival at the collegiate level shocked the entire hockey landscape, and he didn’t disappoint making an immediate impact. In 35 appearances for the school in State College, McKenna recorded 15 goals and 36 assists for a total of 51 points. His -7 plus/minus and 36 penalty minutes do raise some concerns, though, as does his physicality which was questioned throughout the season.

As for Stenberg, he flew mostly under the radar to fans in North America as he played for Frolunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). Still, he put up 33 points (11G, 22A) in 43 games while playing against grown men as an 18-year-old. Stenberg held his ground, and that give him an edge over McKenna, whom many expected to be even more dominant playing against fellow college students.

Both youngsters competed in the 2026 IIHF World Juniors. However, they didn’t meet, as Sweden went all the way to win the gold medal, while Canada fell in the semifinals to Czechia before winning bronze. McKenna finished with a 4-10-14 stat line, whereas Stenberg registered a 4-6-10.

As reported by Joe Fortunato on Blueshirt Banter, the Rangers may have a real shot at trading up in the 2026 NHL Draft. Not with the Maple Leafs, who won’t move an inch from their spot on the board, but with the San Jose Sharks—arguably the biggest winners of the Draft Lottery. New York could send its fifth overall pick, as well as a roster player—perhaps right-handed defenseman Braden Schneider, who fits the bill perfectly for San Jose’s needs—or more.

By moving up to No. 2, the Rangers would be knocking on the door of McKenna. Even though he is widely considered the best prospect in the 2026 class, Swedish forward Ivar Stenberg has been making noise of his own. Being taken off the board first overall is expected for McKenna, but it’s not a lock. A lot can happen before Toronto announces its pick at KeyBank Center on June 26.

For the Rangers, trading up is virtually a must. After dropping two spots and being set to pick at No. 5, the Rangers have multiple potential options, but none as exciting (on paper) as McKenna or Stenberg. If they move up to second overall, New York is guaranteed to come away with one of them. Climbing their way to No. 2 sets up a win-win scenario for the Blueshirts.

Why Sharks could accept such a trade

Indeed, the Maple Leafs won the NHL Draft Lottery—the sun is shining and birds are singing in Toronto. However, the Sharks may be even bigger winners than the Buds. Once again, chance has been on their side. San Jose jumped up nine spots to secure the No. 2 pick—its fourth straight top-five selection.

Having drafted Will Smith, Macklin Celebrini, and Michael Misa with their first picks in the past three years, it’s no secret the Sharks boast one of the best forward groups in the league for years to come. However, San Jose lacks talent on the blue line. It could always add another elite forward prospect, but it might become a headache down the line, especially when the time comes to accommodate Celebrini, Smith, Misa, and a potential addition like McKenna or Stenberg to top-of-the-market deals.

Instead, the safest option seems to be drafting a defenseman, which this class doesn’t lack. By moving down, the Sharks could come away with the best of both worlds by acquiring a current roster player and an exciting defenseman prospect.

Rangers-Sharks trade faces challenge

San Jose’s real concern centers around New York picking fifth. The consensus around the league suggests RHD Chase Reid will be the first blueliner off the board, and the odds of him being available at No. 5 seem low. Keaton Verhoeff may be available, but his size and concerning skating could make for a risky cocktail organizations might opt to steer clear of.

Perhaps San Jose is better off either “reaching” for a defenseman with the second overall pick or trading down with the Vancouver Canucks or Chicago Blackhawks (No. 3 and No. 4, respectively). If the Nucks and Hawks are interested in moving up, it might leave Chris Drury and the Rangers with no choice but to pull out the personal relationship card.

Rangers will try everything

All in all, a lot can happen in the coming weeks leading up to the 2026 Upper Deck NHL Draft. Obviously, for the Blueshirts to draft McKenna, they’d need the Maple Leafs to pass on him. It’s improbable, but not impossible. If that happens, the Rangers must give themselves a shot by being in the right place at the right time.

Fortunately for New York, it has friends in high places. What luck hasn’t given the Rangers, they could make up for by working some magic.

With the No. 5 pick, the Rangers face endless possibilities. However, they will most likely be off the race for the top prospects: Gavin McKenna and Ivar Stenberg. They are often considered 1A and 1B. Teams probably can’t go wrong by drafting any of the two. Whoever Toronto drafts first, San Jose will gladly take the remaining one—or move down to instead target a defenseman.

For the Rangers, however, the decision isn’t that easy. Whom they draft will depend entirely on what the Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks (No. 3 and No. 4, respectively) do. Based on Elite Prospects‘ power rankings of the upcoming class, the Rangers will most likely be choosing between defensemen Chase Reid, Keaton Verhoeff, and Carson Carels, and forwards Caleb Malhotra, Tynan Lawrence, Viggo Bjorck, and Ethan Belchetz.

That is, obviously, subject to change and will depend on how draft night unfolds. It will be interesting to see how New York rates these players and whom it believes to be the best player available when it is on the clock at No. 5 in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Top 10 in upcoming NHL Draft

The 2026 NHL Draft Lottery had fans at the edge of their seats. Against all odds, the Maple Leafs came away with the first overall pick. However, the San Jose Sharks may actually be the biggest winners.

For the fourth year in a row, the Sharks will draft inside the top 5 (2nd overall 2024, 1st overall 2023, 4th overall 2022). With the Sharks winning the second draw of the night, the first 16 picks of the upcoming draft were decided. Toronto picks first, San Jose second, and Vancouver—which held the best odds to win the lottery coming in—will go third.

With reports suggesting the hiring of Mats Sunding and John Chayka pushes Auston Matthews further away, the news of the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft could change everything.

Maple Leafs couldn’t have asked for better outcome

Still, that’s all talk about the future. All Maple Leafs fans care about is that their team just won the Draft Lottery. Although their odds dropped to 4.5% after the first two balls were drawn, the Buds pulled off an improbable comeback to secure the first overall pick.

The winning combination was 7-2-11-12. Now, the Leafs will select first overall for the first time since drafting Auston Matthews in 2016. Exactly a decade later, the Buds get another shot at revamping their squad. Perhaps it’s just what Toronto needed to convince its captain to stay and truly become a Stanley Cup contender.

Toronto’s luck in the NHL Draft Lottery must be studied. In the last 10 years, the Buds have missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs twice and they’ve come away with the first overall selection both times.

When is the 2026 NHL Draft?

The 2026 NHL Upper Deck Draft will take place June 26–27 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo. In the home of their despised cross-border rivals, the Maple Leafs may change the course of their franchise forever. How fitting.

The Maple Leafs are officially on the clock as they make up their minds. Gavin McKenna or Ivar Stenberg—that is the question. On their first day on the job, Sundin and Chayka already hold the future of the organization in their hands.

“At this point I can’t see the Giants trading Kayvon [Thibodeaux] before the season starts,” as stated by Anthony Rivardo of Empire Sports Media on X. “But at the deadline? Maybe.”

Such a move would make the most sense for the Giants. It’s too early to tell, and Thibodeaux might earn a spot in the lineup. New head coach John Harbaugh wants to give each player a clean slate, and that could be just what the Oregon alum needs in the 2026 NFL campaign—his fifth in the league.

Why waiting makes sense for NY Giants

First and foremost, injuries can happen. Though considered a rotational piece, Thibodeaux may see his role in New York expand overnight. In the meantime, the Giants continue to replace Dexter Lawrence by adding D.J. Reader to the defensive unit.

If the G-Men keep adding pieces to their front seven, it may not be long until they face an overcrowded room. That would drive them to make moves, and Thibodeaux is undoubtedly the biggest candidate to pack his bags.

In addition, teams interested in Thibodeaux may not be as willing to give up significant assets during the offseason. However, in the frenzy of the NFL season—when fans demand instant change and results—franchises may be more inclined to overpay.

Thibodeaux’s potential trade price

The Giants picked up Thibodeaux’s fifth-year option ($14.75 million salary) for the 2026 campaign. He will become a free agent next offseason. If New York sees no future for Thibodeaux in the Big Apple—as the selection of Arvell Reese suggests—it’ll be better off trading him before possibly losing him to free agency.

As it stands, Anthony Rivardo predicts Thibodeaux could yield a Day 2 draft pick (second- or third-rounder) for the Giants in a potential trade. However, that reported package could improve or decline depending on how he performs in the 2026 NFL season.

If New York gives up on the former fifth overall pick before the season, the asking price won’t change—for better or worse—and where’s the fun in that? All in all, provided the Giants play their cards right, they could come away with a substantial return. That largely depends on external factors, but for the G-Men, it’s mostly about playing the waiting game for now.

It was never a secret the G-Men needed to improve their defensive line after trading Dexter Lawrence, and they have now acted accordingly during the NFL offseason. The final pieces have been put together on the Giants’ probable starting defense in 2026 with Reader acting as Lawrence’s replacement.

Giants keep adding help on defensive line

Many expected the Giants’ shopping spree to end with the acquisition of Reader. However, senior vice president and general manager Joe Schoen seems determined to max out New York’s credit card and fill the shopping cart to the very top. Plus, it’s not his fault he keeps coming across unsurpassable offers in free agency.

Moreover, considering Lawrence was set to make over $20 million in the 2026 NFL season, the Giants will save a lot of money in the four additions of Shelby Harris (one-year, $3 million contract), D.J. Reader (two-year, $12.5 million deal), Leki Fotu (one-year, $1.3 million), and Pickens.

Every defensive lineman on the roster

As it stands, the Giants have a surplus of talents who can play on the trenches and disrupt opponent’s drives. According to Ourlads.com, New York currently employs 12 defensive linemen: D.J. Reader, Shelby Harris, Leki Fotu, Bobby Jamison-Travis, Roy Robertson-Harris, Elijah Reader, Sam Roberts, Darius Alexander, Marlon Tuipolotu, Zacch Pickens, Anquin Barnes Jr., and Ben Barten.

Obviously, cuts will be made, and the 53-man roster will look quite different. Regardless, having enough options is never a bad thing, especially for Harbaugh, who is entering his first year in East Rutherford.

Key info about Pickens

Coming out of South Carolina, Pickens was selected with a third-round pick (No. 64 overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. So far in his career, Pickens has recorded 44 total tackles (20 solo and 24 assisted), 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and a pass deflection.

Needless to say, Pickens’ numbers suggest he’s up for a steep climb to make the final cut in New York. Either way, the Giants will give the 6-foot-4 defensive tackle a chance.

After making 26 appearances for Chicago, Pickens was waived by the Bears prior to the 2025 campaign, and the Chiefs claimed him off waivers. Pickens played three games in Kansas City in he 2025 NFL season. A year later, Pickens went through the same process, only this time he’s landed in Big Blue.

Reader’s contract with the Giants shows New York has big expectations for the veteran nose tackle. The same could be said for the entire defensive unit in East Rutherford. Possibilities are endless for how the G-Men’s defense may look in 2026, but most starting lineups are enough to give fans hope. The Giants may not miss Lawrence after all.

According to Bobby Skinner of Giants Nation, this is how New York might line up in a nickel formation in the 2026 NFL season: Brian Burns and Abdul Carter as defensive ends, with D.J. Reader and Shelby Harris on the interior of the defensive line. Tremaine Edmunds would be joined by rookie Arvell Reese as the inside linebackers.

In the secondary, Paulson Adebo and Greg Newsome would be the No. 1 and No. 2 cornerbacks, though rookie Colton Hood could give both a run for their money. Andru Phillips would serve as the nickel corner, and Jevon Holland (free safety) and Tyler Nubin (strong safety) would patrol from the back end.

How NY Giants may lineup in different formations

The Giants have grown used to a 4-3 system in recent years. However, Harbaugh’s defensive scheme mainly favors 3-4 formations. In such a tactical design, EDGEs like Burns and Carter should have an expanded role. They will no longer be mainly defensive ends, but outside linebackers, meaning they will have some coverage assignments here and there.

In a 3-4 formation, the Giants would roll with an extra defensive tackle, perhaps Darius Alexander, Roy Robertson-Harris, or Bobby Jamison-Travis. The linebackers would remain the same as in a potential nickel formation. The nickel corner, expected to be Dru Phillips or Ar’Darius Washington, would come off the field to make room for the extra lineman.

On the other hand, in a 4-3 formation, it might be Micah McFadden who joins the inside mix with Edmunds and Reese, while Burns and Carter line up as defensive ends. It’s all subject to change, but Harbaugh must be pleased with the fact that the Giants have addressed their struggles and gotten better.

New York is looking strong

Provided everybody stays healthy, New York should have enough depth to tackle the 2026 NFL season. Still, the NFL isn’t a video game. Players get tired, substitutions are made, and thus depth will be crucial for New York.

Players who aren’t considered starters are expected to play critical snaps, and anything can happen. In this sport, unsung heroes can make the game-winning play at any given moment.

The Giants finally replaced Lawrence by adding Reader to their defensive unit, and they believe sky is the limit for him. According to Jordan Schultz, the Giants have signed Reader to a two-year, $12.5 million contract running through the 2027 NFL season. Moreover, Reader could receive an even bigger paycheck if he accomplishes certain milestones. Ian Rapoport reports incentives could raise Reader’s contract up to $15.5 million.

As reported by Mike Garafolo, Reader will indeed earn $6.25 million if he plays in all 17 games of the regular season. The 31-year-old managed to stay healthy throughout the entire 2025 campaign with the Detroit Lions, and John Harbaugh and the Giants are now holding him to that same standard as he joins Big Blue.

Giants have signed 3 players to replace Lawrence

Since sending Lawrence to Cincinnati, New York has made strengthening the interior of the defensive line a priority. The Giants didn’t even bother to camouflage their intentions; they were very open about it.

It may have cost them some leverage in contract talks with free agents, but at the end of the day, the G-Men have now acquired three defensive linemen: Shelby Harris, Leki Fotu, and D.J. Reader—each one with different traits and attributes.

Moreover, the trio could be used in very different situations. Although they managed to come away with Reader, the Giants could also have a Plan B in rookie Bobby Jamison-Travis.

NY Giants save money

From a financial standpoint, Lawrence was due $20 million had he played for New York in 2026. The organization in East Rutherford will instead spend a total of approximately $10.5 million by signing Reader, Harris, and Fotu. The trio could earn up to $6.25 million, $3 million, and $1.29 million, respectively, in the 2026 NFL season.

The Giants are betting on quantity over quality while saving about 50% in the process. Needless to say, none of the signings may be able to replicate Lawrence’s production, but it’s a good thing the G-Men have a potentially elite front seven with the likes of Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, Arvell Reese, and Kayvon Thibodeaux.

If Reader performs as New York hopes he will, the recent moves in the Big Apple may be remembered for ages as the offseason in which the Giants came to life in the NFL.

NY Giants may have won the trade—for now

As it stands, the front office in Bergen County has pulled off a masterclass. However, all that matters is what happens when football is back. The Giants can rest on their laurels for the time being, but the moment of truth will come in September.

“Matthews still isn’t sure if he’ll be back in Toronto in the fall, according to league sources. That remains the case after Chayka and Mats Sundin were hired to run a revamped front office,” as reported by Chris Johnston on The Athletic.

Chayka is the third GM Matthews will have worked with on the Leafs. When Kyle Dubas and Brad Treliving were hired, Matthews signed extensions on relatively short notice with the Buds. The third time may not be the charm, though.

Matthews may ask out

As much as Matthews loves being the captain of the highest-valued organization in the league, he wants to win a Stanley Cup. He will turn 29 before the 2026–27 NHL campaign, and the championship window may be narrower than it’s ever been since he arrived in Toronto.

Since being drafted first overall in 2016, Matthews and the Maple Leafs have been through a lot. However, they’ve never made it past the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. In 2026, Matthews and the Buds failed to make the postseason—for the first time in the captain’s career.

As much as the front office may try to convince fans and players otherwise, hoisting Lord Stanley in the near future looks virtually impossible for the Buds. Coming off a deflating campaign in which Toronto finished 28th in the NHL standings, Matthews has reason to believe his time in Hogtown has reached its end.

Matthws’ contract situation with Maple Leafs

Matthews agreed to a four-year, $53 million extension in Toronto back in 2023, only months after Treliving was hired as GM. Under his contract, Matthews is signed through the 2027–28 NHL season. That should keep Chayka and the Maple Leafs calm, but it’s not that simple.

Matthews is signed to a full no-movement clause, but if he asks out, the Maple Leafs will essentially have no choice but to listen to offers and send Matthews to a place of his preference. There were concerns about Matthews wanting to leave Toronto, and the hiring of Chayka as GM and Mats Sundin as senior executive advisor of hockey operations may send the wrong message.

Things have changed for Matthews and the Leafs

Matthews put pen to paper on his contract when things were looking very different in the Six. The captain may not be as excited about the hiring of Chayka, which raised eyebrows due to the executive’s controversial history in the league and scandals surrounding his time with the Arizona Coyotes, who are now the Utah Mammoth.

Chayka has much to do with that relocation and rebranding. If Matthews is indeed pushed away due to Chayka’s hiring, he holds his fate in his hands. The Maple Leafs may be falling behind the eight ball.

Far from clearing all doubts and concerns, the Maple Leafs may have put an iceberg right in front of them. Matthews could jump ship before it’s too late.

According to Nick Falato of Big Blue View, Jamison-Travis should earn a roster spot in New York following rookie camp and training camp before the 2026 NFL season. Moreover, the rookie interior defensive lineman could serve Harbaugh and his staff as a rotational run-stuffer.

Being a nose tackle all through college, it’s easy to see why Jamison-Travis could serve as a solution for the Giants if Reader doesn’t sign with them. Whether it’d be ideal or a wise decision, that’s another question.

Just like general manager Joe Schoen trusts Harbaugh will get the most out of Arvell Reese, the Giants may also be confident about Jamison-Travis’ transition to the big leagues. Following the departure (via trade) of Dexter Lawrence, New York is leaving no stone unturned in its quest for reinforcements in the trenches. Reader remains the top priority but there have been no updates on that saga as of late.

NY Giants make defensive line top priority

The franchise’s intentions were made clear as the G-Men selected Jamison-Travis with the 186th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Moreover, the organization will continue to explore its options in free agency. According to reports, the Giants want veteran Austin Johnson back to help fill Lawrence’s void.

The sudden quiet around Reader-to-New York rumors may grow fans concerned, but there are no signs that suggest Schoen, Harbaugh, and company are any less motivated to go after Reader. Even if Jamison-Travis blossoms into a solid defensive tackle, the Giants can still use more help on the interior of the defensive line.

More about Jamison-Travis

Measured during the NFL Combine at 6-foot-4 and 322 pounds, it’s easy to see why the Giants were mesmerized by the product out of Auburn. His frame makes him a problem for any center or guard at the line of scrimmage, and even double teams can struggle to keep him in check.

Last season, Jamison-Travis started all 12 games at the nose tackle position for the Auburn Tigers. He recorded a career-best 36 tackles, including 2.0 tackles for loss (TFL). Playing Jamison-Travis in a role many believe is reserved for Reader may be a lot to ask of the rookie.

However, Jamison-Travis isn’t a typical first-year prospect. Before enrolling at Auburn in 2023, he spent three years at Iowa Western Community College. As he enters his rookie season, Jamison-Travis is 25 years old. That makes him older than stars Jaxson Dart, Abdul Carter, and Malik Nabers.

Just like the Giants may have a clear role for Malachi Fields—74th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft—Schoen believes Reese can truly benefit on Harbaugh‘s defensive system. At the very least, Schoen is excited about how the team can utilize the rookie in several positions.

“It’s going to be fun to see how the defensive staff deploys [Reese]. Right now, he’s going to play as our Will linebacker,” Schoen admitted in dialogue with SiriusXM NFL Radio. “He has a lot of versatility in terms of what we can do with him in coverage, blitzing, base downs.”

NY Giants establish their LB duo

With the likes of Tremaine Edmunds and Arvell Reese, the G-Men can rest assured they have one of the best linebacker duos in the NFL. Obviously, they need both players to stay healthy.

On paper, however, New York should be a headache for opposing offensive coordinators all year long. Considering Reese can occasionally line up on the edge of the defensive line, Harbaugh and the Giants can keep opponents on their toes at all times.

Schoen is well aware of that, and the decision to select Reese with the No. 5 pick in the Draft is one that could be revisited all year long if New York’s defense takes a step forward, as expected, under Harbaugh.

Reese set to play as Will linebacker

As Schoen and the Giants made clear, the rookie out of Ohio State is expected to be the team’s Will linebacker throughout the 2026 NFL campaign. However, fans may wonder what that means exactly.

A Will linebacker is the one who lines up on the weak side of the field—the opposite side of where the offense’s tight end lines up. With Reese as the Will and Edmunds as the Mike—lining up in the middle of the field and acting as the defense’s quarterback—the Giants are poised to be a threat next season.

The fact that McAvoy’s hearing with the NHL‘s Department of Player Safety will be conducted in person is not anecdotal. In fact, it changes everything. “If the Department of Player Safety determines that any Supplemental Discipline from an infraction will result in five games or less, the hearing is conducted by phone,” as stated on NHL.com.

Considering the aggressiveness of McAvoy’s slash on Benson in the dying minutes of Game 6 of the first round, and the fact that McAvoy will have to show up at the league’s office in New York City, it’s safe to assume McAvoy will be suspended for more than five games. That suspension will be served to start the 2026–27 NHL regular season.

Official details of McAvoy’s hearing

On May 2, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced it had offered an in-person hearing to McAvoy. Two days later, the details of that meeting have been confirmed by the league.

“Boston’s Charlie McAvoy will have an in-person hearing on Monday, May 11th at the NHL’s office in New York City for slashing Buffalo’s Zach Benson,” the announcement read, via @NHLPlayerSafety on X.

Before making any plans for the summer, McAvoy will make an offseason visit to the Big Apple. As he shows up at the NHL’s offices in Hudson Yards, just blocks away from Madison Square Garden, the Spoked B’s top blueliner is expected to walk out of the building with a suspension. Exactly how long is uncertain, but it will be at least six games.

McAvoy set for his third suspension

“Just out of respect for the process, I’m probably not going to comment anything on it until I can have the chance to speak with them,” McAvoy answered a question on the in-person hearing during his end-of-season availability, via WEEI Sports.

McAvoy is now on track for the third suspension of his NHL career. The latest came during the 2023–24 campaign, when he was suspended without pay for four games for an illegal check to the head of Florida Panthers defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

The star blueliner was also suspended one game for an illegal check to the head of Josh Anderson of the Columbus Blue Jackets. This time around, McAvoy is set for an even longer—as well as more expensive—suspension.

“I know I need to play better and create more offensively,” Kaprizov admitted to reporters on Monday, via The Athletic’s Michael Russo. Kaprizov recorded an assist during the Wild‘s 9-6 loss against the Avalanche in Game 1.

Although he wasn’t held scoreless, it was tougher to notice Kaprizov during some stretches of the game, especially considering how big of a factor he was during the first-round series against the Dallas Stars. For the first time in the 2026 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, Kaprizov finished with a negative plus/minus (-2) in the series opener against Colorado.

The Wild need Kaprizov

Taking on a team with the likes of MacKinnon, Makar, Nelson, Kadri, Necas, and many more, Kaprizov is well aware the Wild can’t afford for him to have such quiet outings. He has now set his mind on being impossible to miss every time he hits the ice. Fortunately, Kaprizov’s shot at redemption will come quickly.

The Wild will take on the Avs in Game 2 at Ball Arena on May 5. The two sides will then be in for a three-game break, as Game 3 will be on May 9 back in the Twin Cities. For Kaprizov and Minnesota, coming away with one in the Mile High City is paramount.

Potential goaltending change

Although none of Colorado’s nine goals can be blamed on rookie goaltender Jesper Wallstedt, he did, in fact, give up eight goals (the ninth of the night was an empty-netter) in a playoff game. That’s never been a recipe for success in the NHL, let alone in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Thus, despite Wallstedt playing lights out throughout the opening round, Wild head coach John Hynes hasn’t committed to naming the former first-round pick in 2021 as the starter for Game 2. “Hynes hasn’t made lineup decisions for tomorrow yet, including his goaltender,” per Michael Russo on X.

Filip Gustavsson could man the crease instead. Gustavsson last started for Minnesota on April 13. Despite playing more games throughout the regular season than Wallstedt, the veteran ultimately lost the crease to the rookie as the Wild opted to ride the hot hand. Gustavsson may have his chance to reclaim his starting job. Whether its Gustavsson or Wallstedt in net, it’s clear Kaprizov and company must do a better job in front of their goalie if they want to have any chance against MacKinnon and the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Avalanche.

According to Ian Rapoport, the Ravens are signing Thompson, meaning they will boast a five-man quarterback room. At least for the time being. Roster cuts could—and likely will—be made as the year progresses. Lamar Jackson will command the huddle, with Tyler Huntley expected to be the second-string quarterback.

The third and emergency quarterback throughout the 2026 NFL season will most likely be decided throughout rookie camp, minicamp, and training camp between Joe Fagnano, Diego Pavia, and Skylar Thompson. Both Fagnano and Pavia were signed as undrafted free agents (UDFA) by Baltimore.

Ravens’ QB situation

Although Jackson is the franchise’s solution at quarterback, Baltimore knows better than to leave the position unattended. Jackson is under contract through the 2027 NFL season thanks to the five-year, $260 million extension he signed back in 2023. However, his contract includes a potential out next offseason, per Spotrac, and the Ravens are searching for other answers in case Jackson shocks the world and leaves Charm City.

The signings of UDFAs Pavia and Fagnano serve that purpose. Though his off-the-field issues concern several teams, Pavia was a Heisman Trophy runner-up for a reason, and he might prove to be a reliable quarterback in the NFL. Pavia isn’t the tallest, biggest, or fastest prospect, but he plays with the heart of a lion. One would be amazed to realize how often that proves to be a difference-maker in the league.

If neither UDFA experiment (Pavia and Fagnano) works out, the Ravens can resort to Huntley. Obviously, keeping Jackson in town is priority number one, but Baltimore is still weighing all its options. With a stacked QB class coming up in 2027, the Ravens may have a Plan B to a potential departure from Lamar after all.

More about Skylar Thompson

Thompson was a seventh-round selection by the Miami Dolphins in 2022. Although he signed with the Steelers in 2025, Thompson’s last career appearance came in 2024. So far, he’s played 10 career games, with only 721 passing yards, one passing touchdown, and three interceptions to show for it.

Despite his limited playing time, Thompson has playoff experience under his belt. With Tua Tagovailoa injured, Thompson was named the starting QB for the Dolphins in their Wild Card loss to the Buffalo Bills in the 2022 postseason. Despite the high-stakes scenario, that was arguably his best game of his career. Thompson threw for 220 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

“If Rodgers hasn’t given them a decision by May 18, [the Steelers’] patience will start to turn into frustration, and maybe something more,” Gerry Dulac reported on Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. On May 18, the Steelers‘ organized team activities (OTAs) for the 2026 campaign will start.

Pittsburgh had hoped things would be different this time around. Last year, Rodgers didn’t sign with the Steelers until June 5, right on cue for the start of minicamp. If A-Rod doesn’t comply with the team’s deadline, there’s a very good chance the story repeats itself in the Burgh.

That is, however, if the Steelers don’t have a sudden change of heart and grow uninterested in Rodgers. In the City of Bridges, the four-time MVP may burn bridges if he isn’t careful or empathetic with the organization. Naive or not, Pittsburgh is still counting on Rodgers to show up and lead the Steelers in the 2026 NFL season.

Steelers have made moves with Rodgers in mind

If the Steelers and Rodgers don’t reunite for the 2026 NFL campaign, it’d be a shocker. It’d also be quite frustrating for the brass in Pittsburgh. The Steelers’ NFL Draft may have been built with Rodgers in mind, which only adds more pressure on the team to secure its starting QB.

Even the hiring of head coach Mike McCarthy may have been a means of keeping Rodgers on their good side. However, for as much trouble as the Black and Yellow have gone through to keep A-Rod happy, the 42-year-old signal-caller hasn’t been as straightforward with the franchise.

Fans are growing tired of Rodgers

Many fans want Pittsburgh to move on, and the fact Rodgers is still playing hard to get could be the final nail in the coffin for the Terrible Towel-bearers to give up on him. Moreover, Rodgers’ last memory in a Steelers uniform is far from an encouraging one.

The Houston Texans bullied Rodgers and the Steelers in a 30–6 rout in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs. Rodgers completed 17 of 33 pass attempts for 146 yards and one interception in what was Mike Tomlin’s last game as head coach in the Burgh. Although McCarthy’s arrival can help Rodgers find his best football again, the prospect isn’t looking too promising.

Perhaps Pittsburgh is better off with Will Howard or Drew Allar under center. As it stands, at least the Steelers know those two actually want to play football and represent the six-time Super Bowl champions. When it comes to Rodgers, that isn’t as convincing, and Pittsburgh is only left guessing.

“I still want to continue to play,” Perry admitted recently to The Athletic. “Somebody said they’ll have to cut the skates off me before I leave this game. “Just love the day-to-day being around. It’s fun.“

Hopefully it doesn’t come down to such an extreme ending. The Tampa Bay Lightning‘s first-round elimination against the Montreal Canadiens may only make Perry hungrier. If Perry indeed returns in 2026-27, it will be his 22nd NHL season of his career.

Perry’s contract

Signed to a one-year, $2 million contract with the Los Angeles Kings, Perry will see his current deal expire on July 1. Immediately after, he will become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) in the NHL.

Fortunately, this isn’t Perry’s first rodeo. He has been here before and has grown accustomed to short summers with deep postseason runs and almost no time to make a decision on his future.

This time, the run wasn’t as deep, and he will have more time to make up his mind. One thing seems clear, though, and that is that Perry wants to be back for the 2026–27 campaign.

Perry’s Stanley Cup history

It’s probably the most known fact around Perry’s postseason career. The veteran has been in the losing end of the Stanley Cup Final in five of the last six NHL seasons. This time around, Perry aimed to redeem himself with the Bolts in 2025–26, whom he joined at the deadline after being traded from the Los Angeles Kings. However, Montreal had other plans, and the 2-1 defeat in Game 7 put an end to Perry’s quest. It may only be momentarily, though, as Perry is already eyeing next season.

At the end of the day, Perry was eliminated in the first round just like the Kings, though Tampa Bay lost by one goal in Game 7, whereas Los Angeles was swept. Still, only one team wins the Cup every year, and unfortunately for Perry, he won’t be hoisting the Cup that has been elusive to him since his sophomore campaign in 2007.

Still, all signs indicate he will be back for redemption next season. Whether it’s back in Tampa, Edmonton, Anaheim, or somewhere else, Perry will bring his A-game, even at 41 years old.

“Grant Potulny, Jamie Tardif, and Paul Mara have been relieved of their coaching duties,” the Rangers announced through its PR social media account, @NYR_PR on X. Potulny was the head coach for the Wolf Pack, whereas Tardif and Mara were his assistant coaches.

The Wolf Pack finished dead last in the AHL standings with 60 points through 72 games. Hartford’s rough campaign had similarities to New York’s nightmare year in the NHL. Now, the parent organization is stepping in. Announcements have yet to be made on who will take over as head coach—and what his staff will look like—for the Wolf Pack next season.

Rangers step in with changes

There is much work to do in the Big Apple for the Rangers, but they can’t overlook their affiliate in Hartford, either. After all, the Wolf Pack are responsible for developing prospects and key depth players for the Blueshirts.

Much has been said—and still is—about New York’s struggles in developing rookies. Perhaps the spotlight should be set on the AHL affiliate as well.

In ironic fashion, the Rangers’ affiliate in the Insurance Capital of the World has been far from a guarantee. It’s often overlooked, but having a strong affiliate is also key to a team’s success.

Rangers and Wolf Pack suffer similar fate

For the Blueshirts, it should be no surprise that Hartford and New York have both missed the postseason in the last two seasons. In the 2023–24 campaign, both sides reached the playoffs (Stanley Cup and Calder Cup). Since then, the Rangers and Wolf Pack have tasted nothing but disappointment.

New York is serious about turning the page, and the recent housecleaning in Hartford may signal the brass is serious about getting to the very root of the problem.

“Yeah, I feel the same way,” McDavid admitted, via NHL.com. “I feel the same as I did a couple of days ago and agree with [Draisaitl] that the organization as a whole has taken a step back. It starts with me, it starts with Leon, we all can be better, we need to be better.”

Hearing that both franchise cornerstones are upset with the current direction is the last thing Edmonton needed heading into a long NHL offseason. Perhaps it turns out to be a blessing in disguise, but only if the recent comments serve as a wake-up call. McDavid and Draisaitl made their thoughts and emotions clear.

Draisaitl’s comments

The ball is in the front office’s court now. Either they get back on track, or they may have to brace for the final years of “McDraisaitl” in the Gateway to the North. If McDavid—who’s not one to usually go off script with the media—made that clear, Draisaitl—whose public outbursts are far more common—didn’t sugarcoat his emotions whatsoever.

“I am concerned because we’re not trending in the right direction,” Draisaitl stated during his end-of-season press conference. “In what world do you have the best player in the world on your team and you’re not looking to win? I know we’re looking to win, but we need to be better, we have to be better, there’s no way around it. “

McDavid and Draisaitl’s stats

Draisaitl and McDavid combined for 16 points (4 G, 12 A) in the Stanley Cup Playoffs matchup against the Anaheim Ducks. The German was coming off a lower-body injury that sidelined him for 14 games down the stretch of the 2025–26 NHL regular season. Though he may not have been at 100%, he was the leading scorer for his team.

However, with Draisaitl battling setbacks and McDavid suffering a foot fracture in Game 2 of the series, the Oilers needed the rest of the team to step up and help the star duo out. At the end of the day, Edmonton’s lack of depth was their downfall. Once again, only this time, “McDraisaitl” couldn’t lead them to another Stanley Cup Final appearance.

Feeling as if they were left out to dry by the brass in Alberta, the duo expressed their frustration as they headed out of Rogers Place for one last time until after the summer. McDavid and Draisaitl voiced their feelings in authentic fashion. McDavid wasn’t as blunt as Draisaitl, but both wore their hearts on their sleeves as they faced the media in Edmonton with nothing but sorrow all over their faces.

Draisaitl opens the door for potential McDavid trade

“[McDavid is] signed for two more years, and God knows where that goes, but we have two years here as of right now and we have to get significantly better,” Draisaitl said. If the two-year championship window wasn’t obvious for the Oilers, Draisaitl made sure to remind the organization of it.

McDavid agreed to a two-year, $25 million extension with the Oilers before the start of the 2025–26 NHL season. If the organization continues to take steps backward, the captain may ask out of the organization. It’s a hard truth fans in Edmonton wish to overlook, but Draisaitl has now put that talk in the spotlight.

In the even McDavid requests a trade, it probably won’t take long before Draisaitl asks out as well. His situation is far more complex, though, as he just completed the first season of his eight-year, $122 million contract. Still, the first-round exit against Anaheim has put Edmonton in a very tough spot, and it may only be a matter of time before Pandora’s box is opened.

“Doncic will be out to start this series against the Oklahoma City Thunder,” Shams Charania reported on ESPN. “The Lakers are evaluating Doncic on a week-to-week basis. It’s still a slow path on Doncic’s recovery. Still not full fledged running or full contact workouts.”

Though deflating, Charania’s report confirms what the Lakers had been expecting for a while. Redick and company know they are in for a steep climb if they want to take down the reigning NBA champions in the 2026 Playoffs. Fortunately for Los Angeles, LeBron James is playing some of the best basketball of his career—at 41—and Austin Reaves—though still finding his footing—is back in action.

Doncic set to miss 12th straight game

Since sustaining a Grade 2 hamstring strain during the 139–96 blowout loss to the Thunder on April 2, Doncic hasn’t stepped on the court in an NBA game. Curiously enough, he might make his long-awaited return against OKC, too.

Considering Doncic is trending to be sidelined for Games 1 and 2 of the series—both at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City—his missed games total could rise to 13 in a row. So far in the 2025–26 campaign, Doncic has been out for 24 games, six of which have come in the ongoing postseason.

Regardless, two absences were due to the birth of his daughter and were not injury-related. The Lakers have grown used to playing without Doncic at multiple points throughout the season. But this time’s different.

Lakers up for huge challenge

Overcoming Doncic’s absence when taking on the best team in the league might be an impossible task for the Purple and Gold. At least, the latest injury update didn’t come out of the blue for Redick and the Lakers. As it gears up for a tone-setting visit to the Big Friendly, Los Angeles hopes to come away with at least one win.

Any other outcome may put the Lakers in a world of trouble that not even Doncic may be able to pull them out of. That is, of course, if Doncic even comes back during the series. All signs indicate he will, but nothing can be taken for granted. If the Lakers aren’t careful, there may no longer be a series for Doncic to return to by the time he’s fully healed from the Grade 2 hamstring strain.

“I don’t think there’s any reason for us to have that [conversation]. That’s now what we plan on doing,” Schottenheimer admitted to The Dallas Morning News.

After putting pen to paper on the $27.3 million franchise tag for the 2026 NFL season, Pickens is set to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason. Thus, it begs the question of which route Jerry Jones and the Cowboys will go down. Dallas has made it clear it won’t entertain extension talks at this point. If anything, America’s Team will wait to see how Pickens performs next season.

Cowboys won’t make Pickens decision right now

Facing a plethora of options, there’s even room for Jones and the Cowboys to make Pickens the highest-paid WR in NFL history. That prospect is surely one that will motivate Pickens to put together another strong year in Arlington. However, Schottenheimer believes Pickens isn’t one to be money-driven.

“I think [Pickens] would play this game for a dollar as much as he loves football,” Schottenheimer commented on Dallas’ star wideout. “These guys that love playing the game, they love playing the game.”

That might be true, but Jones and the Cowboys still had a tough time reaching an agreement with Pickens and his camp. At the end of the day, the wide receiver out of Georgia will play on the tag in 2026. Whatever happens next is uncertain. Schottenheimer says Dallas isn’t entertaining any speculation around Pickens—neither an extension nor a trade. However, history should warn everybody to keep an eye on America’s Team.

Parsons’ case casts a cloud of concern over Pickens

Anything can happen. Knowing Jones’ history with Pickens’ agent, David Mulugheta, it’s easy to question whether such a record-setting extension will be possible. After all, Micah Parsons—represented by Mulugheta as well—was also poised to sign a groundbreaking contract back in 2025, but he ended up putting pen to paper on a record non-quarterback contract in NFL history in Green Bay.

Indeed, everything is bigger in Texas, but it seems like Jones’ will to extend stars doesn’t match that. Or, what’s also big is the Cowboys owner’s grudge against Mulugheta.

Schottenheimer may have pushed back on a potential trade, but recent history indicates nothing can be taken for granted when it comes to the franchise valued at approximately $13 billion—according to Forbes‘ list in 2025—and located in Arlington, Texas, the “American Dream City.”

As reported by Art Stapleton from USA Today, the Giants have had conversations with Johnson and his camp. The veteran could help alleviate the pressure on the defensive line to perform after Lawrence‘s departure.

An addition like Johnson’s could add to the team’s depth, as did the signing of Leki Fotu, whose contract details were recently revealed. The Giants know a player of Lawrence’s caliber can’t quite be replaced. Thus, New York is playing a game of chance and numbers. The more options the G-Men have, the better their odds in a pivotal NFL campaign.

Giants aim to fill Lawrence’s void with quantity

It goes without saying, but Johnson wouldn’t exactly be interchangeable for Lawrence. Instead, the G-Men are looking to replace the nose tackle with several players who give the team the ability to rotate its defensive front and avoid becoming predictable.

Back when Lawrence was in town, the Giants would line him up head-on against the center and get a matchup they’d take any day of the week—twice on Sundays. The message has now shifted, as New York will aim to keep opponents guessing and on their toes.

All the while, the Giants are still checking in on D.J. Reader, who’s become the No. 1 free agent target for John Harbaugh, Joe Schoen, and the rest of the brass in “The City That Never Sleeps”. New York is taking things slow, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less interested in signing the veteran 0-technique nose tackle.

More about Johnson’s career

A second-round selection (43rd overall) by the Tennessee Titans in the 2016 NFL Draft, Johnson played out his entire rookie deal in Music City. In 2020, he joined the Giants, where he spent two years. In 2021, he registered career highs in East Rutherford with 72 tackles and 3.5 sacks through 17 games. However, he left in free agency for the Los Angeles Chargers, where he signed a two-year deal.

Since that contract expired, he’s had one-year stints with the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024 and 2025. Johnson is coming off a one-sack season in Jax. Since his 3.5-sack campaign in New York, Johnson has registered 2.5 sacks total. Needless to say, a reunion in 2026 may be in both sides’ best interests.

“No updates on that,” Schoen commented on Beckham Jr. during an appearance on NFL Network’s The Insiders. “We worked him out a couple of weeks ago and he did a good job. Odell is a guy we had in for a workout. We’ll continue to have conversations with his camp and see where it goes. We’re always looking to get better.”

Schoen’s latest statement mirrors a report around the NFL that suggests the Giants’ reunion with Beckham Jr. depends on fit, and not just interest. It’s become clear both sides are interested, but it’s now a matter of whether the two are compatible. They were a decade ago, but a lot has changed since.

Giants will continue to explore nose tackle market

The fact the Giants will lose Darius Slayton for weeks amid the Odell rumors only adds to the buzz. However, the G-Men have made it clear their priority is addressing the interior of the defensive line after Dexter Lawrence’s trade. D.J. Reader is the main name to watch, and the New York Giants could face one less competitor for him after the Baltimore Ravens secured Calais Campbell.

Regardless, the front office in East Rutherford isn’t placing all of its eggs in one basket. Schoen made that clear during his latest interview. Wherever there’s a position in need of reinforcements, the Giants will be all over it.

Still, they mustn’t overstretch themselves, as they may turn into a jack of all trades, master of none. Only a thin line separates them from such an abyss, and offseason greed may well push them overboard.

Odell’s numbers

Beckham Jr. didn’t play a single snap in the 2025 NFL season and was limited to nine appearances in 2024. John Harbaugh coached him back in 2023 on the Baltimore Ravens and spoke highly of Odell, but he remains wary about a commitment.

Ever since Beckham left the Big Apple, he’s only surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in a season once. That was during his first year in Cleveland in 2019. It was also the last time he stayed healthy through an entire season. Since 2020, Beckham has tallied 1,476 total receiving yards. That makes for an average of 369 yards per year (considering he missed the entire 2022 and 2025 seasons).

With such numbers, it’s clear Beckham Jr. will have to ask for a very low price on his next contract. He signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Miami Dolphins back in 2024, but even that price tag might be asking too much from Schoen and the Giants.

“The Rockets recently upgraded Kevin Durant from OUT to DOUBTFUL for Game 6 against the Lakers,” as reported by NBA insider Brett Siegel. Though an upgrade to his status, the odds aren’t really in KD’s favor for him to make his return.

Most likely, he will indeed miss the action. However, the Rockets are leaving the door—though only minimally—open for a miraculous comeback. In any event, it also puts the Lakers on notice. Durant may be out for Game 6, but Game 7 may be different. However, Houston must first tie the series at three games apiece.

Difference in statuses

The difference in the Rockets’ update on Durant’s injury lies in the probabilities he has of playing. Had he been ruled “OUT,” that would mean he isn’t playing. Being listed as “DOUBTFUL” means there’s less than a 25% chance he laces up his shoes to take on the Lakers.

A “QUESTIONABLE” tag implies there’s a 50% or less chance, whereas “PROBABLE” indicates there’s a 75% or greater probability. Needless to say, the odds aren’t in Durant’s favor to be active during Game 6 of the NBA Playoffs’ First Round at Toyota Center.

What happened to Durant?

According to Shams Charania, Durant has been dealing with a left-ankle strain throughout the first-round series against the Lakers. As of late, a bone bruise only made matters worse, greatly decreasing his chances of playing in Game 6.

Durant may try to fight his way through the setback, but it might do him more harm than good. Perhaps, it’s best for him to leave the season in the hands of his teammates. However, that’s much easier said than done, especially considering Durant really hasn’t had any luck in the postseason ever since moving on from the Golden State Warriors.

Lakers are under siege

Los Angeles has watched its 3-0 series lead turn into a measly one-game lead as Houston refuses to go out. Even if Durant isn’t healthy enough to play in Game 6, if the Rockets win without him—like they’ve done in Games 4 and 5—the forward could be back for the win-or-go-home Game 7 back in The City of Angels. Needless to say, watching the Slim Reaper walk into the court might be a terrible omen for the Purple and Gold.

Though often mistakenly quoted, astronaut Jack Swigert said, “Houston, we’ve had a problem.” And that’s exactly what the Rockets might have said—but it seems they’ve figured things out. Now, the pressure is on LeBron James and the Lakers not to be on the wrong side of a colossal falloff in the NBA Playoffs.

Albeit the Giants could face one less competitor for D.J. Reader as the Baltimore Ravens signed Calais Campbell, there’s a recent trend that may spark concerns in Big Blue. Most reports indicate New York is after Reader for him to play the 0-technique nose tackle position. However, that might be a tall task for the 11-year veteran in the NFL. At the very least, Harbaugh and the Giants may have to exercise patience.

According to data from Sports Info Solutions and The Film Room, Reader recorded 177 rush snaps from a 1-technique spot on the defensive line and just two snaps at 0-technique throughout the 2025 NFL season. That would mean the Giants may be assigning him to a role he barely had last year.

There’s a common saying about stats, though. They tell a lot, but hide the most important side of every story. Perhaps Reader’s lack of usage wasn’t due to a lack of skill in playing such a role, but simply a coaching decision (by head coach Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions and defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard). If Reader indeed signs with the Giants, that’s something Harbaugh and Dennard Wilson will have to figure out.

New York has no time to waste

Obviously, the sooner New York can reach an agreement with Reader, the earlier the nose tackle can get to work on his craft. However, with the Giants reportedly asking Reader for a discount and contract talks slowing down, there’s no certainty as to when that might happen.

Reader could be introduced to the Big Apple tomorrow, next week, next month—or not at all. At the end of the day, it’s the NFL, and everybody must expect the unexpected. That includes the future of the former fifth-round pick in 2016, who’s become the Giants and Harbaugh’s new priority to replace Dexter Lawrence.

Unfortunately for the G-Men, word is out across the league on their intentions. That only serves as leverage for Reader and his camp, meaning any plea for a discount may be in vain.

Difference between 0 and 1-technique

Quarterbacks, wideouts, and running backs may steal the spotlight with their ability to make incredible plays out of nothing, but in its most primitive version, football is essentially a sport of gaps. No MVP will ever go to a lineman, but games are won and lost, and championships are decided by what happens in the trenches.

Looking at the offensive-defensive line battle, legendary Alabama head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant came up with a 9-technique system that still holds up. We’ll focus on Reader’s job, which is limited, as a nose tackle, to being a 0-technique or 1-technique player.

The key difference lies in the fact that a 1-technique lines up on the shoulder (whether outside or inside) of the center, leaving himself exposed to blocks from a guard and double teams. As for a 0-technique, it takes on the center head-on.

With Lawrence, the Giants could move him across both techniques with virtually the same efficiency. With him gone, the G-Men need someone who can carry that vacant load. Reader is the best option on the market and whom New York is favoring—even though his latest tape in 2025 suggests he hasn’t been used as much as a 0-technique as the Giants may have liked.

The star wideout had Dallas in limbo, but Pickens finally stayed true to Jones and the Cowboys. It took a while, but he put pen to paper on the franchise tag. If the relationship between Pickens and Jones’ Cowboys is indeed on good terms, reports suggest Dallas may unload a huge paycheck for Pickens next summer.

However, the deal lies in the hands of Pickens, whose off-the-field drama is a big reason why the Cowboys haven’t re-signed him to such an extension yet. If Pickens proves he can behave, there’s little reason to believe Jones wouldn’t welcome him back with open arms to AT&T Stadium—a.k.a. Jerry World.

“If [Pickens] goes into this season, plays on the franchise tag, and has a repeat of last year—and I don’t mean on the field, I mean off the field—he will sign the biggest contract for a wide receiver in NFL history,” Andrew Hawkins stated on NFL Live. “And he would’ve earned it, and answered a lot of questions.”

It’s up to Pickens

The ball is in Pickens’ court now. Obviously, Jones and the Cowboys are free to trade him at any moment if the right offer comes up, but they’ve shown no indication of being interested in trading Pickens. After all, the former second-round pick proved he can be a main target in Dallas’ offense.

Last season, he led the Cowboys in receptions (93), receiving yards (1,429), and receiving touchdowns (9). He was also the team leader in big plays—20-plus-yard gains—with 22 such catches or runs after the catch. With CeeDee Lamb sidelined in several games, Pickens proved his worth. Most importantly, he showcased his professionalism and eased most concerns about his personality and off-the-field antics.

Aside from being benched—along with Lamb—in the opening series against the Las Vegas Raiders after being late to the team bus, Pickens stayed out of trouble all year long. If he can keep that up, Jones may pay him the big bucks in 2027.

Cowboys don’t want to re-sign Pickens right now

With Pickens under the franchise tag and the board’s reluctance to re-sign him before the 2026 NFL season, the Cowboys are essentially hitting all the green lights to complete a blockbuster trade. Pickens wants to stay in Dallas, so he won’t complain much so as not to force Jones’ hand.

Simply put, Pickens must trust Jones will keep his word. Exactly like the Cowboys did when it was up to the wide receiver to come forward and sign the $27.3 million franchise tag.

Where Pickens’ contract ranks among NFL WRs

Entering the upcoming campaign, Pickens’ $27.3 million deal in 2026 ranks 15th among wide receivers in average per year (APY). Jaxon Smith-Njigba leads the NFL with his $42.1 million APY contract with the Seattle Seahawks. Out of every big-name wide receiver across the league, only Pickens is set to enter a contract year. Nico Collins could give him a run for his (projected) money, but the Houston Texans’ star is under contract through 2027.

Thus, if Pickens stays the course and puts up another fantastic season with America’s Team, he could be in for a skyrocketing jump to the very top of that list. It’s up to him—and to Jerry Jones not to pull off a signature, unexpected trade.

Chief among the assets New York would have to part with might be Alexis Lafreniere. The former first overall selection in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft has yet to meet the expectations set for him upon his arrival in the Big Apple, but he’s still an intriguing talent many franchises would like to acquire. Regardless, a one-for-one player exchange would be utopian. In addition to Lafreniere, the Rangers will have to make their offer worth the Senators’ while.

“Alexis Lafreniere would almost surely have to be included in a hypothetical trade package for Tkachuk. As would at least one first-round pick and other roster pieces or prospects,” Vince Mercogliano stated on The New York Times.

Tkachuk brushed off the trade rumors, but as long as it remains verbal and no long-term extension is signed in Bytown, it’s still fair game for any team to test the waters around the Senators. That includes the Rangers, who have rated Tkachuk since before he was even drafted into the NHL and have only marveled at the kind of player and leader he’s become.

Lafreniere’s stats

Coming off back-to-back 100-plus point seasons in the QMJHL for the Rimouski Océanic, some analysts went as far as to dub Lafreniere a generational prospect entering the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. That was a stretch, but it still felt like the Rangers found their savior after winning the draft lottery and coming away with the No. 1 selection in the draft.

However, it took a while before Lafreniere started playing up to the standard he set in the QMJHL. His best hockey in Manhattan was seen during the 2023–24 campaign (57 points in 82 games), including a great run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Although the Blueshirts fell in the Eastern Conference Final to the Florida Panthers, Lafreniere stole the show with 14 points (8 G, 6 A) in 16 outings.

After a troubling start to the past campaign, Lafreniere ended the season on a heater, including a 19-point tally in March (a career best in a single month). As a result, Lafreniere actually matched his career high of 57 points in the 2025–26 campaign.

NY Rangers must make decision

Perhaps it’s just the kind of production that gives Rangers fans hope that Lafreniere might be the answer after all. Or maybe it’s the growth spurt needed for New York to shop him and actually have a market for the former No. 1 pick.

Although Tkachuk and Ottawa have made it clear there’s been no internal conversation about a fresh start, fans across the NHL know anything can happen. For the Rangers, they are entering the homestretch of the free-for-all Lafreniere sweepstakes.

Lafreniere’s contract with NY Rangers

Lafreniere is signed to a seven-year, $52.1 million contract that runs through the 2031–32 NHL season. However, the 2026–27 campaign will be crucial. Next season will be the last year Lafreniere is without a no-trade clause.

Starting in the summer of 2027, his contract will include a modified no-trade clause in the form of an eight-team no-trade list. It still leaves New York with over 20 teams to talk business with, but it makes trading Lafreniere prior to that deadline much more sensible.

“Wonder if there’s one fewer suitor for DJ Reader with Calais Campbell going back to Baltimore,” as Art Stapleton from USA Today stated. Baltimore found the defensive lineman it was looking for in Campbell. With the Ravens likely out of the picture, the Giants may have one less side to worry about.

That is, of course, if the veteran nose tackle and his camp are willing to lower their asking price, as the Giants might be asking Reader for a discount. Moreover, John Harbaugh may rest assured his former NFL organization won’t come out of the dark to snag who’s clearly become the No. 1 target for New York.

The Giants reportedly have a new priority to replace Dexter Lawrence, and it’s Reader. Still, sooner or later, New York will have to put its actions—and wallet— where its words and rumors are.

Why the Ravens may be out on Reader

Harbaugh built a strong defense in Baltimore. Still, first-year head coach Jesse Minter was looking to customize it to his preferences and perhaps put the final touches on it for it to be among the best in the NFL in 2026. With the addition of Campbell, the Ravens secure a veteran defensive tackle who excels when rushing guards.

Campbell isn’t a 0-technique nose tackle like Reader is, but the defensive line in Charm City has no need for such an addition. Baltimore has Travis Jones, who is only 26 and has proven he can do a phenomenal job lined up against centers. However, just as the Ravens may be off Reader’s trail, another suitor may emerge.

Giants may face new competitors

While the Ravens may indeed be content with their latest defensive line addition and leave the market, teams that were in on Campbell may now steer away from the 19-season NFL veteran and closer to another long-tenured DT like Reader. With the likes of Travis Jones and John Jenkins, Baltimore has not one, but two suitable nose tackles.

Other franchises, though, don’t enjoy the same depth on the interior of the defensive line—case in point: the New York Giants. That’s why the G-Men must make a move fast. Otherwise, they may give other organizations enough time to knock on Reader’s door, and there’s no telling what the 31-year-old defensive lineman will answer.

As it stands, New York is confident Reader is waiting for its call, but that may not last forever. And just as one standpoint indicates there is one less team to worry about pouncing on Reader, it could turn out to be the other way around.

“Just so appreciative for the opportunity to have played with them as long as we have. Hopefully, we can keep going,” Crosby said after the playoff elimination from the 2025-26 NHL campaign, via Pens Inside Scoop. “It’s kind of hard to put into words, honestly. We probably have just gotten used to. I think they’re like family. We’ve had some great wins, some tough losses like this.”

Crosby’s statement was a clear message to the organization and the higher ranks in the front office, including president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas. Still, the Penguins will take their time before coming to a final decision on Malkin, who will turn 40 before the 2026–27 NHL season. In fact, Malkin will be the same age as Dubas when the puck drops in October.

Crosby, Malkin, and Letang: ‘The Big Three’

Crosby, Malkin, and Kris Letang have played together for the past 20 seasons in the NHL. No other trio in North American sports history has been together for as long as the “Big Three” in Pittsburgh. Ask any of the three, and they hope to keep the streak going in the 2026–27 season.

However, at some point, the front office must decide what’s best for the organization. Malkin is set to become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) in the summer, and although Dubas has admitted there’s interest in a reunion, anything can happen.

If it were up to Crosby, the decision would be made in a heartbeat, though he understands the business side of it and doesn’t take these past two decades for granted. Obviously, the trio has led Pittsburgh to three Stanley Cup conquests (2009, 2016, and 2017).

Where do the Penguins go next?

Entering this season, many expected it to be a sort of last dance for the “Big Three.” Making the postseason was a surprise, and the belief in the City of Bridges was that the trio could pull off one last improbable deep run. In the end, Crosby, Malkin, and Letang did their job but couldn’t overcome the lack of depth in Pittsburgh, and the young Flyers squad ultimately took them out in six games, in identical fashion to their first-round elimination by Philly in 2012.

Now, the dilemma is even harder for the Penguins. Should they call it a career for the “Big Three,” or have the three veterans proven to be part of the solution? Whichever route Dubas and company go down, only time will tell whether it was the right move or not.

For as much success as Crosby and company have had, the past few years have been anything but kind to fans in Pittsburgh. Moreover, extending Malkin may only be clawing at and holding on to the last thread of the glory days in the City of Bridges. It might have lost its grace and may be seen as more of a last-ditch effort than a tribute to the franchise’s active heroes..

Might be time to move on

Since hoisting back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017, the Penguins have only won a single playoff series. That was back in 2018. Since the Washington Capitals knocked them out of the second round, en route to their Cup conquest, the Pens haven’t been the same.

Pittsburgh has been bounced in the opening round five times since (including once in the qualifying round in the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs in the bubble). Moreover, they missed the postseason entirely three years in a row (2023, 2024, and 2025).

Pittsburgh’s 2025–26 NHL season was an anomaly. Against all odds, the Pens made the playoffs in Dan Muse’s first year as head coach. However, at the end of the day, it was only an oasis in the desert. It takes no master in biology to know a penguin won’t last long in the desert, and thus time is running out for Pittsburgh to figure out what’s wrong.

It starts with Malkin

Nailing the Malkin decision in the offseason is only the first step, yet it could well make or break Dubas’ plans for the summer. Crosby has sent his two cents out there for the organization to listen to, and it will. However, Crosby is only signed through one more season, and sooner or later, the Penguins will have to brace for a team that no longer features “Sid the Kid.”

Simply put: absolutely not. The Giants’ reported plan to add Reader and Harris to replace Lawrence could still come to fruition. Fotu’s addition may indeed add depth, but in no way is it comparable to Reader’s potential impact in the 2026 NFL season.

Moreover, the Giants are reportedly asking Reader for a discount, and if he indeed lowers his asking price—or the G-Men are suddenly willing to foot the bill—the veteran nose tackle should be on his way to the Big Apple soon.

In the meantime, however, the Giants acknowledge just how depleted the interior of their defensive line currently is, and Fotu’s welcoming to Big Blue is a sign of that. Fotu has been signed to a one-year, prove it deal, as reported by Jordan Schultz.

Fotu’s numbers

Selected with a fourth-round pick in 2020 by the Arizona Cardinals, Fotu performed in fits and starts during his time in Glendale. As a result, he was allowed to walk as a free agent in 2024—after his rookie deal expired—and he signed with the New York Jets. Since the 2024 NFL season, Fotu has played for three different franchises (Jets, Raiders, and Texans) but has appeared in just eight games across the two campaigns.

As he joins the Giants, he is expected to compete right from the start just to make the roster. “The expectation is that he’ll compete for a reserve spot,” USA Today’s Art Stapleton reported. Thus, all signs indicate Fotu’s signing has no impact on New York’s evident interest in Reader.

Giants may have no option but sign Reader

The Giants may be unwilling to pay as much as Reader is currently asking, but they aren’t waving the white flag in negotiations, nor are they steering away because of Fotu’s arrival. The G-Men need a 0-technique nose tackle that fits John Harbaugh’s base 3-4 system, and Reader seems to be the best candidate on the NFL open market.

If the Giants truly have no intention of trading Kayvon Thibodeaux, then free agency may be their lone alternative. One way or another, all roads lead to them having to pay Reader. Any other route may only lead to more drama and criticism later in the year.

“I feel like I’ve never shown, never said, none of those things have ever come out of my mouth, and quite honestly it’s just getting frustrating. It’s becoming a distraction,” Tkachuk said during his end-of-season availability in Ottawa, per NHL.com. “I have been fully committed to this team, to this city. Frustrating to deal with.”

Tkachuk—who missed the Senators‘ end-of-season media day to welcome his daughter Lyla into the world—made his commitment to the organization and the city of Ottawa clear. As Rangers fans have been paying close attention to his situation, hearing Tkachuk show no signs of giving up on the Sens may not be an encouraging sign heading into the long NHL offseason. Regardless, anything can happen, and the fanbase in the Big Apple will still hold onto a thread of hope.

NY Rangers growing obsessed with Tkachuk

Fans in the Big Apple believe the Rangers can save Tkachuk. Back in Canada, he’s constantly under the microscope, and his national team history does him no favors with the Canadian fanbase. In New York, the story could be much different for him. Obviously, Manhattan is still a tough market to navigate, but Tkachuk is already battle-tested.

Regardless, it may all be empty talk if Tkachuk is serious about changing the tune in Ottawa and the front office in Bytown isn’t blown away by any offer during the summer. Still, it may do Chris Drury and company no harm to knock on the Sens’ door every once in a while.

Tkachuk had a rough ending to the season

The 2026 Olympics may have been a breaking point between Tkachuk and the fanbase in Canada’s capital. Watching Tkachuk and Team USA take down Canada in the gold medal game left its mark, and it seemed like the die was cast in the relationship between the organization’s captain and the fans.

Tkachuk did quiet much of the noise as he and his teammates turned the NHL season around and made the Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, nothing good came of it. The Sens were swept by the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round, and their captain was held scoreless through all four games.

To make matters worse, Tkachuk was assessed 13 penalty minutes (PIM), an average of 3.25 PIM per outing. The captain’s scoring woes weren’t exclusive to him, though, as Ottawa scored just five goals in the entire series. With an average of 1.25 goals per game in the postseason, it was clear the Senators wouldn’t last long.

Tkachuk’s contract with Senators

Tkachuk has two seasons left on his seven-year, $57.5 million contract with the Senators. The former fourth overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft put pen to paper on that extension back in 2021. As it stands, he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) in the summer of 2028 at the age of 28.

Since the 2025–26 campaign, Tkachuk’s contract includes a full no-movement clause (NMC). Thus, the captain will have the final say on whatever decision his team lands on. If the Sens want to trade him, Tkachuk will be able to handpick his next destination.

Teams to watch in potential Tkachuk trade

The Rangers are considered heavy favorites, but so could the Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues (Tkachuk’s hometown club). Though more difficult from a money standpoint, if the Senators announce the Tkachuk sweepstakes are open, the Florida Panthers may chime in and look for a way to reunite the brothers in the Sunshine State. After all, Brady has seen more playoff success from the stands in Sunrise than on the ice in the suburb of Kanata.

Without Robert Jr., the Mets crushed the Nationals with a statement 8-0 victory. Juan Soto believes this is is just the beginning for the Orange and Blue. Still, it’s up to the players to prove it, and they may have to do without their starting CF for a while.

“Luis Robert Jr. ‘didn’t improve much’ overnight, per Carlos Mendoza. He’s receiving an MRI today. The injured list is in play for him,” as reported by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

How many games could Robert miss?

If Luis Robert Jr. is indeed placed on the injured list (IL), he’d miss a minimum of 10 days during the 2026 MLB campaign. Considering he’d be listed retroactive to April 28, he’d be cleared to return on May 8—at the earliest—when the Mets start a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on the road. However, Robert could remain sidelined for longer than the minimum 10 days.

If Robert Jr. is placed on the IL, he’d be set to miss the remainder of the Nationals series, as well as the entirety of the three-game series against both the Los Angeles Angels and Colorado Rockies (both on the road).

There’s a possibility Robert Jr. doesn’t travel with New York on its upcoming trip and returns to the lineup when the Mets come back to Queens to take on the Detroit Tigers (May 12–14) and cross-town rivals, the New York Yankees (May 15–17).

Robert Jr.’s stats in 2025

Since being acquired from the Chicago White Sox via trade, Robert has appeared in 24 games for the Mets in the 2026 season. So far, he has recorded 10 runs, 19 hits, 8 RBIs, and 2 home runs. Moreover, he’s posted a batting average of .224 and a .656 OPS (.327 OBP and .329 SLG).

Still, his numbers are overshadowed by the fact New York is 10-19 on the season and has lost 12 of its last 15 outings. Until the Mets figure out their struggles, no player will have time to hang medals around their necks.

Unfortunately for fans in Queens, it just doesn’t look like the Orange and Blue can find a way out of their labyrinth of misery and despair. Barely a month into the calendar, many believe the die is already cast for the Mets. The more things change, the more they stay the same. After an offseason built strictly to mend their mistakes from last season, New York may be in for the same fate.

“Apparently, Reader still possible [for the New York Giants] if asking price is lowered,” as reported by Howard Balzer on his X account.

The Giants have been circling around Reader for quite some time now. The veteran defensive lineman visited New York’s facilities prior to the 2026 NFL Draft and seemingly made a lasting impression. According to reports, the Giants plan to sign Harris and Reader to replace Lawrence. One step has been achieved, and the other might be imminent.

Reader’s stats

Set to enter his 11th NFL season, Reader could join his fourth organization by signing with the Giants. The product out of Clemson was drafted 166th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. He played four years for the franchise in H-Town before signing with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020 free agency. After his four-year deal expired, Reader signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Lions in 2024.

So far in his career, he’s appeared in 138 games, registering 328 tackles (171 solo), 12.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble. In 2025, however, Reader recorded 28 tackles (17 solo), but no sacks or fumbles in 17 appearances.

NY Giants are in for signing frenzy

Since the NFL’s deadline for the compensatory pick formula has already passed, the G-Men can freely sign free agents. The Giants’ acquisitions won’t alter the equation, and they are set to receive a compensatory selection in 2027 due to Wan’Dale Robinson’s departure as a UFA for the Tennessee Titans. New York may not be expected to bring back Odell Beckham Jr., but it’s sure set to go out on a shopping spree.

With Lawrence out of the picture, the interior of the defensive line is—undoubtedly—the biggest weakness on the roster and an area Big Blue must thoroughly address. Fans may criticize much about the organization in East Rutherford, but it’s done a good job addressing this need.

Giants are staying busy

Obviously, the best-case scenario would’ve been keeping Lawrence in town, but after he requested a trade, the Giants have only made the right decisions. They received a top-10 overall pick in the draft and are now filling the void with veteran presence that may provide a spark.

Moreover, New York drafted defensive tackle Bobby Jamison-Travis out of Auburn in the fifth round, who may feed off his experienced teammates in the trenches. With the Giants’ best interests at heart, Harbaugh is investing in both the present and the future. It may only be a matter of time for fans in the Big Apple to stop looking at the past.

“We’re still in a really tough spot. We’ve got to find a way to win in a tough building. All we did is survive one more day. The pressure is still on us, but it’s a big game for them too,” McDavid admitted, via NHL.com. “I’m sure they’ll be feeling that too. I’m sure they’re not going to want to come back to Edmonton. Pressure on them. We’ve got to find a way to survive another day.”

The Oilers will only face elimination games going forward in the first round of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. Edmonton must take it one game at a time, though. If McDavid and company get too far ahead of themselves, they might run into even more trouble.

Ducks sense the pressure as Oilers put up a fight

Though the Oilers’ backs are against the wall, the Ducks aren’t in for a walk in the park, either. If Anaheim can’t close out the series in Game 6, it will be in for a cortisol-spiking Game 7 back in the Gateway to the North.

Though the Ducks’ squad features several NHL veterans, they may not be able to withstand a win-or-go-home matchup against the likes of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard, and company. Something’s clicked for Edmonton. Maybe, playing with no margin for error was all the Oilers needed to find their best hockey.

McDavid is back, and so are the Oilers

The McDavid-Draisaitl duo came to life in Game 5, as they combined for two goals in the 4-1 triumph. McDavid has been battling through a lower-body setback since Game 2. However, during the Oilers’ third home game of the series, he finally looked like his best self again. As a result, McDavid ended the night with two assists and—most importantly—a crucial win to keep his team’s NHL season alive.

Perhaps the series’ momentum has shifted. Anaheim may have its last chance to send Edmonton home in Orange County. Yet if the series returns to Alberta, it might as well be all she wrote for the Ducks. McDavid said it best: the pressure is still on the Oilers to survive one more day in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but the Ducks are surely growing anxious as they realize Edmonton refuses to go out.

If Edmonton makes it out of California in one piece, it will become a whole new series. Against all odds, the Oilers may force a Game 7, and anything can happen in a one-game showdown.

The Giants have secured a pivotal Lawrence replacement by signing Harris, however, that’s still not enough. Because of how dominant Lawrence was at the line of scrimmage, New York understands a one-for-one move won’t cut it. Thus, the Giants are still eyeing defensive linemen.

As Connor Hughes from SportsNet New York simply put it: “[Harris] won’t be the only IDL the Giants sign.“ It makes sense and was expected, as the Giants reportedly planned to sign both D.J. Reader and Shelby Harris to replace Lawrence.

A nose tackle signing is crucial for Harbaugh’s NY Giants

One step of their plan has been completed, but the final one is just as pivotal. Harris fits New York’s need for a three-technique defensive lineman, but Reader would give them a crucial nose tackle (0-technique).

John Harbaugh often favors a base 3-4 alignment on the defensive side of the ball. It can shift to a 4-3 formation occasionally, but the former is preferred by the Super Bowl-winning head coach. In any 3-4 system, the nose tackle position is crucial. A 0-technique nose tackle aligns directly in front of the opposing center. Lawrence did a better job than any other player in the NFL at that spot on the gridiron.

Therefore, the Giants are in for a steep climb to replace him and get even a fraction of Lawrence’s production from their next nose tackle. Still, Reader may be as good as any option available across the league. Harris, on the other hand, is a 3-technique D-lineman—a pure defensive tackle. He lines up against the outside shoulder of guards but becomes ineffective when double-teamed. Thus, having a nose tackle who can carry that burden becomes pivotal.

Giants’ starting front seven

Signing Harris shines a light on Harbaugh’s intentions to rely on a 4-3 system sporadically. One thing is clear: New York won’t be a one-trick pony in 2026, and the NFL should take cover because the organization in East Rutherford has put together a front seven that can send chills down any offensive coordinator’s spine.

As it stands, the Giants could start a defensive front featuring Darius Alexander, Sam Roberts (who could be replaced by D.J. Reader), Shelby Harris, Abdul Carter, Arvell Reese, Tremaine Edmunds, and Brian Burns.

Moreover, the G-Men’s depth could include the likes of Kayvon Thibodeaux, Roy Robertson-Harris, Bobby Jamison-Travis, and Micah McFadden, among others. The offense steals the spotlight, but on Broadway, it might be the revamped defense that runs the show.

Gearing up for Game 5 against the Lightning, the Canadiens received a bittersweet update on Dobson, as he is making progress but his return to play remains unconfirmed. Most signs suggest Dobson will miss the upcoming matchup with Tampa Bay in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but it might be the last game he misses.

As reported by TVA Sports‘ Renaud Lavoie, Dobson joined the rest of the Canadiens’ scratches for an optional morning skate at Benchmark International Arena. Seeing the blueliner back on the ice with teammates for the first time since sustaining a hand injury may signal Dobson is closer than ever to making his return to NHL action. Still, he appears set to be absent from the lineup in Game 5.

Dobson’s injury

Dobson has been sidelined since April 11, when he blocked a shot with his left hand in a regular-season matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Montreal has Dobson listed with an upper-body injury.

Since the incident, Dobson has been absent from the Habs’ last six games (two in the regular season and four in the postseason). If the 25-year-old defenseman is indeed out for Game 5 against the Bolts, it will be his seventh straight game missed.

Dobson has missed games every year

Injuries have been a common theme in Dobson’s career, though most have usually been short-term. Since he entered the NHL in 2019, the former first-round selection (12th overall) has never played a full 82-game season. So far in his playoff career, Dobson has appeared in 31 games, recording 10 assists and no goals.

Perhaps he scores his first during the first-round series against the Lightning. It’d be perfect timing for both himself and the Habs. Still, Dobson’s return to play in this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs remains uncertain.

Recent signs are encouraging, and the Canadiens might rush him back onto the ice if they fall behind 3-2 and face elimination in Game 6, which will be back home in Quebec’s metropolis.

“The defenseman is skating. It’s another step forward. Return to play still undetermined,” the Canadiens stated on their update on Dobson, via Anthony Martineau on X.

Fans in Montreal remained hopeful Dobson could be back in the lineup for Game 5 of the first-round series against Tampa Bay. Dobson made noise early on Tuesday as he skated by himself—and was later joined by Mike Matheson—prior to the team’s practice in Quebec before traveling to Florida. However, it looks like he won’t be able to play as the Habs vie for a 3-2 series lead on the road.

Canadiens confirm players’ status

As reported by Sportsnet’s Eric Engels, head coach Martin St. Louis confirmed both Juraj Slafkovsky and Josh Anderson will play in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Lightning. However, St. Louis provided no update on Dobson, who has yet to make his return to the lineup. Moreover, the former New York Islanders blueliner has yet to join the rest of the group in a team practice.

Though reports suggested the Canadiens could have Dobson back for the series against the Lightning, him missing the entire first round remains plausible. As Montreal said in its statement, Dobson is showing progress, but he is still not quite there yet to be cleared and reactivated. All signs indicate the 26-year-old defenseman is on track to miss his seventh straight outing in the 2025-26 NHL season for the Habs.

What happened to Dobson?

Dobson’s last appearance was on April 11, during Montreal’s regular-season defeat against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Dobson was in pain after blocking a shot with his left hand and hasn’t played since for the Habs.

At first, Montreal thought it had things under control even without him available. However, the Bolts are now putting the Habs against the ropes, and the latter have realized just how important having Dobson in the lineup is for them. The Canadiens hope to have him back as soon as possible. If not, it might be too late.

McDavid has been battling through a lower-body injury so far in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. While the Oilers’ captain has appeared in all four games so far in the first round, he could miss the upcoming showdown in which his team will face elimination.

In addition to McDavid, Jason Dickinson—who missed Games 2 and 3 of the series against the Ducks—is considered day-to-day and will be a game-time decision as well. If neither is able to dress for Game 5 at Rogers Place, Edmonton will be in for a very steep climb.

What happened to McDavid?

McDavid got tangled up with teammate Mattias Ekholm during Game 2 of the opening-round series against Anaheim. Immediately after the freak accident, McDavid felt pain in his right ankle and struggled to put any weight on that leg. After trying to shake the pain off, he left the game momentarily to be checked by the Oilers’ medical staff.

He returned to the game and has appeared in both Games 3 and 4. However, as he missed the team’s practice before Game 5 and Knoblauch failed to provide a clear update on him, signs indicate McDavid could miss the biggest game of the season for the Oilers—and possibly the last.

McDavid’s playoff stats

McDavid has never missed a postseason game for Edmonton in his NHL career. So far, McDavid has played 100 Stanley Cup playoff games, recording 154 points (45 goals and 109 assists). Through the opening four games of the first-round matchup against Anaheim, the best player in Edmonton—and the league—has put up four points (one goal and three assists).

McDavid has been far from his best hockey—likely due to the injury he’s playing through—but the Oilers still need him on the ice if they want any chance of overcoming a 3-1 series deficit.

Next man up for the Oilers

The Oilers’ hopes will be in the hands of Leon Draisaitl, who was rushed back after missing 14 games in the regular season ahead of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The German star leads the team with seven points (one goal and six assists).

Kasperi Kapanen is the leading goal scorer with four tallies. If McDavid and Dickinson aren’t healthy enough to go, Knoblauch and company will need the unsung hero to continue his red-hot streak in order to stay alive. Perhaps it’s too late for Edmonton to salvage its season—and its Stanley Cup dream.

As the compensatory pick formula has passed its deadline in the NFL, the Giants can accelerate the signing of D.J. Reader and other replacements for Lawrence without losing their projected compensatory selection in 2027 because of it. According to a report, the former’s arrival is imminent in New York, and another veteran like Shelby Harris could be on his way to the Big Apple, too.

“I think [the Giants] will sign Reader as the NT and sign another veteran three-technique, with Shelby Harris the top option for that role,” as reported by Dan Duggan of The Athletic on his X account.

Giants could resort to trade

Although the Giants reportedly have no intention to trade Kayvon Thibodeaux—and never had—it could all change if they can’t come away with players good enough to replace Lawrence. If New York’s shopping spree pays no dividends, fans could expect the front office to use the former first-round pick as a trade chip to acquire much-needed help on the interior of the defensive line.

After all, the G-Men are stacked on pass rushers from the edge, and have only added to that prowess with the selection of Arvell Reese in the 2026 NFL Draft. Meanwhile, the NT and DT positions appear to be the most vulnerable spot on New York’s defense.

NY Giants are desperate

As noted by Duggan, the Giants have no time to lose—nor margin for error. Reader is also in the crosshairs of the Baltimore Ravens, as Harbaugh’s former NFL team could prove to be a thorn in New York’s side. The veteran defensive tackle has visited the Ravens, just as he did the Giants, so both organizations may feel confident about coming away with him. However, the G-Men have more urgency than the Ravens.

Sam Roberts (a free agency signing from Atlanta) and Bobby Jamison-Travis are listed as New York’s nose tackles, per Ourlads.com, but neither has a résumé like Reader’s. Tasked with the virtually impossible mission of replacing the best nose tackle in all of football, Harbaugh knows he can’t mess this up before his first year in Bergen County.

Because Lawrence played such a big role in New York, one signing isn’t going to cut it, and the Giants must bring in more than one player to fill his void on the interior of the defensive line.

NY Giants target other DTs

Acquiring Reader is paramount, as it can set off a domino effect that leads to other talents like Harris joining the team. Obviously, the New York Giants know better than to put all their eggs in one basket. That’s why they’ve done their due diligence on several defensive tackles.

In addition to their interest in Reader and Harris, New York has hosted Benito Jones on a visit and continues to monitor the situation around Calais Campbell. The latter has yet to announce whether he’ll retire or give it another go in 2026.

If he does step back onto the gridiron, expect the Arizona Cardinals to pounce on him, but the G-Men could give the Cards a run for their money in a free agency bidding war.

“The expectation right now is still that [George Pickens] shows up and plays on the tag,” as reported on ESPN’s Get Up morning show.

Although Pickens has Jones and the Cowboys in limbo despite the reported verbal agreement between the organization and his agent, signs may point in the direction that the wideout will finally sign the $27. 3 million franchise tag tender. That might put an end to the drama ahead of the 2026 NFL season—though it’s not guaranteed.

Cowboys won’t entertain long-term contract talks

Jerry Jones has made the Cowboys‘ intentions clear. Dallas wants Pickens to play through the 2026 NFL season on the tag before it makes any decision on his long-term future. Whether that decision is made because of the wide receiver’s performance or the fact his agent is David Mulugheta, that’s another question.

Pickens may accept those terms—likely with remorse and bitterness. Still, signing his franchise tag tender won’t cancel out the trade buzz around Pickens. If anything, it may only bolster it. Until he signs the tender, Pickens can’t be traded. The fact the Cowboys have added Marquez Valdes-Scantling to the depth chart may signal that a trade involving Pickens is a real possibility.

Ever since the 2026 NFL Draft weekend came to an end, most reports indicate the Cowboys aren’t interested in trading Pickens. However, actions tend to speak louder than words, and Dallas’ recent activity begs the question of whether there’s been a sudden change of heart regarding the former second-round selection (by the Pittsburgh Steelers) in 2022.

Pickens’ numbers

The former Steeler is coming off a career year in the 2025 NFL campaign. During his first season on America’s Team, Pickens recorded career highs in receptions (93), receiving yards (1,429), touchdowns (9), and first downs (73). Still, Jones and company have their doubts about extending a long-term contract offer to him and his camp, led by Mulugheta.

Things might have been much easier had Pickens been taken off the board at least 20 picks earlier in the 2022 NFL Draft. If he had been a first-round selection, “Dem Boyz” could have simply exercised the fifth-year option on Pickens back in 2025.

However, had Pickens been a first-rounder, his fate in Pittsburgh might have been quite different. He may never have been traded to Dallas in the first place. It’s all hypothetical.

Where Jones, Pickens, and the Cowboys stand

What’s factual is that Jones’ Cowboys and Pickens remain in a standoff. Neither is giving the other an inch. Reports suggest Pickens will play on the tag, but until he signs the tender, anything can happen. Well, actually, virtually nothing can happen.

Once he signs the tender, that’s when the options are truly limitless for Jones and company to work their magic. Perhaps the owner of the Cowboys has one more trick up his sleeve, just for old times’ sake.

“That’s something that happens sometimes. You try to go in front of the net. Sometimes [those shots] hit you, sometimes they go by and they don’t hit you. I feel good,” Crosby admitted after Game 5, via Pens Inside Scoop on X.

Crosby was also hit with an ill-intended cross-check by Travis Konecny after the buzzer sounded in Game 5. Despite falling to the ice and being slow to get up, Crosby made no mention of the incident, so all signs indicate he’s good to go for the next matchup against the Flyers.

Crosby is healthy for Penguins

Hearing Crosby is fully healthy is just what fans in Pittsburgh wanted to hear. The Penguins have battled back from down 3-0 in the series against the Philadelphia Flyers to force a Game 6 back in the City of Brotherly Love. Only one more win separates the Pens from forcing a win-or-go-home Game 7 back at PPG PAINTS Arena.

Pittsburgh may be operating with an advantage, as its last two outings in the Stanley Cup Playoffs have already been elimination games. Playing with their backs against the wall, Crosby and company finally showed their teeth, and the Flyers are sensing the pressure.

2012 flashback gives Flyers hope

Though the Flyers’ lineup looks nothing like it did back in the 2011–12 NHL campaign, there are many similarities between the two first-round matchups against the Penguins that year and this time around. Both times, Philly jumped to a 3-0 lead before Pittsburgh clawed its way back to force a Game 6 in South Philadelphia. The Flyers would go on to win that game and eliminate the Pens.

Over a decade has passed since, but the squad in the Birthplace of America is hanging on to the hope that history will repeat itself. It serves as consolation; if not, the panic meter would be at an all-time high. Perhaps it already is.

Flyers sense the pressure, Penguins feed off of it

The Flyers are young and lack playoff experience. Watching how Crosby and company refuse to go out puts an incredible amount of pressure on them. The Penguins are using that to their advantage.

Moreover, the fact Philadelphia is punishing its best players and pointing blaming fingers around the locker room may be the perfect sign for the Pens. Penguins may not be the apex predator, but even they can smell blood and decide to go in for the kill.

Series schedule

The Penguins will travel to the Cradle of Liberty for Game 6 on April 29. If they manage to come away with their third straight triumph in the series, the Pens will keep their Stanley Cup hopes alive in the 2025–26 NHL season and force a decisive Game 7 back home in the City of Bridges. The win-or-go-home showdown is scheduled for May 2.

Because Banks was drafted in the first round, the Giants can exercise his fifth-year option to automatically re-sign him for the 2027 NFL campaign. However, the product out of Maryland hasn’t been able to replicate his promising rookie season. As a result, he could be playing on a contract year in 2026.

According to Giants Wire, the front office in East Rutherford will decline Banks’ fifth-year option. If New York were to make use of the option, it would have to pay its backup cornerback $12.6 million in guaranteed money during the 2027 season.

That figure is almost as much as the Giants pay—in guaranteed money—on average every season to starting corner Paulson Adebo ($12.8 million). Thus, it makes little sense to pay Banks that much when he is mostly utilized in a backup and special teams role.

Banks could be set for contract season

Regardless, it’s not like the Giants will be throwing Banks’ stuff out into the street. The fourth-year defensive back is still under his rookie contract for the 2026 NFL season. If Banks is able to turn the tide and make a strong impression on Harbaugh and his staff, the G-Men might as well sign him to an extension.

If New York has no desire to re-sign the former Terrapin, Banks might be moved before the NFL trade deadline in the upcoming campaign. That’s a decision for later, though. Banks can still change the narrative around him, but the Giants are running short on time to make their decision on the fifth-year option.

NY Giants must make decision before May 1st

Teams across the NFL have until May 1 to announce their fifth-year option decisions. Out of every franchise that has yet to make its call, the Giants would pay the least for Banks if they were to exercise the option.

However, all signs indicate it’s unlikely. Based on reports, the G-Men will hand Banks his last chance to prove himself in 2026. His fate is in his hands, but the odds aren’t in his favor.
