Fortunately for Algeria, those days seem to be fading into the rearview mirror. Algeria’s roster is one of the most French-influenced, with more France-born players representing another country than any other national team at the 2026 World Cup.

The Fennecs hope this is only the beginning of a golden era for Algerian soccer. Against Messi’s Argentina, Jordan, and Austria, they will look to prove it to the world.

Algeria are among the top five national teams with the most overseas-born players at the 2026 World Cup. The Desert Warriors may not come close to Curacao, which lead the tournament by a landslide. Curacao have 25 Dutch-born players representing the nation.

Algeria do not have as many France-born or foreign-born players, but they still have their fair share. Algeria feature 13 players born in France and 16 born outside the country entirely. Many of them, like Riyad Mahrez and Luca Zidane, play crucial roles on Petkovic’s team and may go a long way toward the Fennecs’ success at the 2026 World Cup.

France’s presence isn’t exclusive to Algeria, though, as “The Hexagon” has significant influence on the tournament. In fact, 76 France-born players are representing countries other than France at the 2026 World Cup.

The Desert Warriors’ 26-man roster for the 2026 World Cup also includes three players born outside both Algeria and France: Rafik Belghali (Belgium), Ibrahim Maza (Germany), and Ramiz Zerrouki (Netherlands).

Teams in Group J

Sharing Group J at the 2026 World Cup with Argentina, Jordan, and Austria, the Fennecs have more foreign-born players than any other team in the group. Although the number is small, Argentina also have a few players born outside the country.

However, Mbappe has played in more World Cup matches than arguably the greatest Brazilian player of all time. Although Pele won three World Cups and appeared in four tournaments, he played only 14 matches in total.

In fact, Mbappe—who reached the final in each of his first two World Cups—had already matched Pele’s goal and appearance totals before France’s 2026 World Cup opener against Senegal. All things considered, Pele and Mbappe shared the exact same goals-per-game rate, with 12 goals in 14 matches. Now that Mbappe has played his 15th World Cup match, he has moved ahead of Pele by two goals.

Mbappe breaks Fontaine’s record

With his 13th World Cup goal, Mbappe had matched Just Fontaine’s record for the most goals scored by a France player in soccer’s biggest tournament. All signs suggested the 27-year-old striker would surpass Fontaine in no time—and sure enough—he moved into sole possession of first place in national team history with his second of the game against Senegal. While Mbappe is now France’s all-time top scorer, he remains far from Cristiano Ronaldo’s international mark.

Although Mbappe has left Fontaine behind, the latter holds a record that will most likely never be replicated, let alone broken. Fontaine played in only one World Cup—the 1958 edition—and that was enough to leave his mark on the tournament. In six matches, he scored 13 goals, including a four-goal performance against West Germany and a hat trick against Paraguay.

Mbappe is after all-time World Cup goals record

Still, Mbappe is after a bigger prize—chasing Miroslav Klose, who holds the record for the most goals in FIFA World Cup history with 16. Mbappe and Lionel Messi are the two active players closest to the record, with 14 and 13 goals, respectively, at least for the time being.

However, the 2026 World Cup might be Messi’s last, while Mbappe could very well have two more tournaments left in the tank. Based on projections and his current scoring form, Mbappe appears likely to become the leading scorer in World Cup history sooner rather than later.

In fact, some of Iraq’s best players weren’t born in the Cradle of Civilization. Iraq’s situation regarding overseas-born players isn’t an isolated case. In Group I of the 2026 World Cup alone, France’s roster features several players born abroad, while Senegal also has several foreign-born players, including some born in France.

Iraq’s Farji will face Norway

Sharing Group I at the 2026 World Cup, Farji will face Norway, the country of his birth, while representing Iraq. If he scores, it remains to be seen whether he will celebrate or choose not to out of respect for his birth country.

Perhaps he will take a page out of Yasin Asari’s book, as he did not celebrate after scoring for Sweden against Tunisia at the 2026 World Cup. Still, all Iraq care about is putting on a strong showing and making it out of the group stage for the first time in tournament history.

Needless to say, the Lions of Mesopotamia are in for a steep climb taking on Norway, France, and Senegal in the ‘Group of Death’ of the 2026 World Cup.

Saudi Arabia’s FIFA ranking might look very different by the time the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada comes to an end.

Saudi Arabia’s World Cup history

Saudi Arabia made their first appearance at a World Cup in 1994, when the tournament was held in the United States. More than three decades later, the Green Falcons are back on American soil, but with a lot more experience under their belt.

Saudi Arabia will be making their seventh World Cup appearance in 2026, appearing as “KSA” in each and every one of them. However, they haven’t been able to surpass their best finish, which came in their first World Cup. Saudi Arabia reached the round of 16 in 1994 and haven’t made it out of the group stage since.

In 2026, there will be an added round of 32, meaning the Saudis will have to win one more game just to match their best performance. However, making it out of Group H will be a challenge in itself for the Green Falcons.

All in all, Saudi Arabia have played 19 World Cup games, winning just four, losing 11, and drawing the remaining four. Having scored 14 goals and conceded 44, KSA have an accumulated goal differential of -30 across their previous six World Cup appearances.

Why Saudi Arabia is called like that

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia gets its name from three main components. Firstly, it reflects the country’s form of government. “Saudi” comes from the ruling family, Al Saud, which founded the modern state and has been in power since 1932.

As for “Arabia,” it’s a straightforward nod to the region in which the country is located: the Arabian Peninsula, situated between the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea in Southwest Asia.

Uruguay won the 1930 and 1950 World Cups. However, they were also crowned champions at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics in Paris and Amsterdam, respectively. Because there was no such thing as a FIFA World Cup in 1924 and 1928, Uruguay argue that those two titles are equivalent to the sport’s biggest tournament.

Ask anybody in the Republica Oriental del Uruguay and they’ll tell you La Celeste are four-time world champions. Thus, they wear four stars on their crest—the same number as Germany and Italy, and only one fewer than Brazil, the most successful nation in World Cup history. Perhaps most importantly, those four stars put Uruguay ahead of neighboring country and fierce soccer rival Argentina.

Uruguay’s four-star crest is polarizing

However, if you ask anybody other than a Charrua, the answer will likely vary, and many will say Uruguay have won only two World Cups—one fewer than Argentina and tied with France. Every four years, when the World Cup comes around, the four-star debate heats up, with Uruguayans standing firm in their stance.

Luis Suarez won’t be playing in the 2026 World Cup, but the four stars will be there. That’s the way it is with Los Charruas: players come and go, but their stars never fade and are worn with pride above the national team’s crest.

First time Uruguay donned four stars

Brazil was the first national team to acknowledge their World Cup triumphs by placing stars above their crest. However, Uruguay included their four world championships on their crest in 1991, according to CNN, and have never looked back since. Although FIFA requested that Uruguay’s then-outfitter Puma remove the four stars from the crest in 2021, La Celeste presented evidence to support their case, and FIFA ultimately accepted the four stars. Thus, soccer’s governing body accepts Uruguay’s claim.

Uruguay’s world titles

There is a big distinction that must be taken into account, though. Uruguay are four-time world champions, but only two-time FIFA World Cup champions. Still, they wear those four stars with pride on their chest, and no Uruguayan will ever be convinced otherwise. Uruguay don’t care about being handed their flowers. All they ask is that nobody mess with their stars.

Although Uruguay have four stars on their crest, they will be in pursuit of their third title during the 2026 World Cup. However, they will do so without the contributions from the leading goal scorer in national team history, Suarez, who was left out of the roster by Argentine head coach Marcelo Bielsa.

According to Bielsa, it was Suarez who openly admitted he’d rather leave his roster spot available for younger players to fill. Uruguay have been transitioning from their golden generation to a younger one for several years now, and although it’s been a journey with plenty of ups and downs, La Celeste believe they can leave their mark on the 2026 World Cup.

Although “El Pistolero” later walked back that stance and told Bielsa he would be happy to help the national team at the tournament, the Argentine bench boss stood firm in his decision. Instead, Rodrigo Aguirre, Federico Viñas, and Darwin Nuñez will be Uruguay’s options at center forward.

As a result, Suarez, who made headlines around the globe at both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, while also participating in the 2018 and 2022 editions, has been left out of Uruguay’s squad for 2026. He scored seven goals: three in 2010 in South Africa, two in Brazil in 2014, and the remaining two in Russia in 2018. Suarez was held scoreless in Qatar, as Uruguay were eliminated in the group stage.

Suarez was shown a red card once, in 2010, after saving a goal with his hands in the quarterfinal against Ghana. The resulting penalty shot was launched into the Johannesburg sky, and La Celeste advanced through a shootout. In 2014, Suárez wasn’t sent off for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini, but he was handed a nine-game suspension with Uruguay and a four-month ban from soccer-related activities.

Needless to say, through screamers, beautiful goals, and controversial moments, Suarez has changed World Cup history forever and written unforgettable chapters in the tournament’s history.

Maybe Spain aren’t as scary as once thought. Maybe Cape Verde deserve much more credit than they were initially given. One thing is clear, though: La Furia Roja has seen its plans go out the window with an unexpected draw in their 2026 World Cup debut.

Looking at the glass half full, however, all hope is not lost yet. Throughout World Cup history, two teams that opened their campaigns with a goalless draw have gone on to win the trophy. Maybe Spain can be the third name added to that list. After all, it’s a list made up entirely of European sides.

Only England and Italy have achieved so

For the English, it happened in 1966, when they drew against Uruguay in their debut before going on to lift their first—and, to date, only—World Cup title, thanks to a “phantom” goal in the final, in which the ball never broke the plane, let alone fully crossed the line. It remains one of the most controversial situations in World Cup history.

As for Italy, they crowned themselves world champions for the third time in 1982 despite drawing 0-0 against Poland in their opener. That World Cup took place in Spain, so perhaps it’s time for the torch to be passed to La Furia Roja.

How did Spain fare in 2010 World Cup debut?

Although only two teams have gone on to win the World Cup after a goalless draw in their debut, Spain have actually managed to overcome a bigger setback en route to their lone world title. In their opening game of the 2010 World Cup, the Spanish national team fell to Switzerland by a score of 1-0 to kick off the action in Group H.

This time around, Spain have also failed to secure three points in their debut and are playing in Group H as well. Perhaps it’s all a sign. However, symbols and coincidences will only take Luis de la Fuente’s side so far if Spain can’t turn the tide. In their opener, they lacked offensive firepower and looked toothless against Cape Verde, No. 67 in the FIFA World Rankings coming into the game.

Spain must turn the page

On paper, Cape Verde was the least daunting opponent in Group H, so things must change for Spain as they will take on Saudi Arabia and Uruguay next. Good omens aside, de la Fuente’s team looked more like the 2018 and 2022 versions of Spain, led by Fernando Hierro and Luis Enrique, respectively, than the squad that terrorized opponents left and right throughout the 2024 UEFA Euro.

That is something that can’t be overlooked or swept under the rug, regardless of what the statistics and fun facts suggest.

Graham Potter made headlines around the Land of the Midnight Sun with his decision to leave Bardghji out of the 26-man roster for the 2026 World Cup. However, he had his arguments to back his verdict.

Bardghji is coming off a disappointing season at Barcelona. The Dutch winger saw limited action under Hansi Flick’s orders. Bardghji played in 28 games, recording just two goals and four assists. The youngster mostly came off the bench and wasn’t used in the most critical games.

Some might say Potter and Sweden gave themselves the luxury of leaving Bardghji and Kulusevski out of the squad. The attack may be covered with Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres leading the charge.

Barring a shocking loss by Ivory Coast to Curacao, Ecuador’s chances would likely be limited to advancing as one of the eight best third-place teams at the 2026 World Cup.

Ecuador vs Curacao is now crucial

Unless Sebastian Beccacece’s side can come away with points from its matchup against Germany, Ecuador’s future will hinge entirely on their next game against Curacao. With only three points, the odds of Ecuador making it out of Group E as one of the best third-place sides are low. However, goal differential could play a big role, and that’s why a blowout win over Curacao could do wonders for La Tri.

Sportsmanship aside, Ecuador must defeat the Caribbean side by a landslide. Anything short of that may as well be all she wrote for them, or leave them with a true elimination game against Germany on the final matchday.

All in all, the late defeat at the hands of Ivory Coast has put Ecuador against the ropes. There’s no going back, though. Ecuador can’t cry over spilled milk. World Cups require a one-game-at-a-time mentality, and for La Tricolor, there may never be a game as crucial as the upcoming tilt against Curacao.

Group E standings after first matchday

On paper, Sweden versus Tunisia should be a favorable matchup for the Yellow and Blue. However, anything can happen, and the Eagles of Carthage could very well pull off a shocker in Group F.

Sweden would rather not think about anything other than a win over Tunisia, but at Bolavip, we take a look at every possible outcome and the consequences it would have for the Yellow and Blue as they navigate Group F, which is also made up of the Netherlands and Japan.

What happens if Sweden defeats Tunisia?

If Sweden win in their World Cup opener against Tunisia, they will come away with three points, while Tunisia are left with none. Because Netherlands and Japan tied 2-2, a win against the Eagles of Carthage would send the Yellow and Blue to first place in Group F.

However, the job would only be getting started for Graham Potter’s team. Sweden would have to take care of business against the Oranje and the Samurai Blue. Sweden wouldn’t clinch their place in the round of 32 with a win over Tunisia, but it would be a good start and, frankly, the only outcome the Yellow and Blue would be able to live with.

What happens if Sweden and Tunisia tie?

If the game ends in a draw, there will be no extra time or penalty shootout. A tie it will be. Both Sweden and Tunisia would come away with a point each. During the 2026 World Cup group stage, tied games do not go to extra time after 90 minutes.

Because the Netherlands and Japan also drew, every team in Group F would remain level on one point apiece. Heading into the second match of the group stage, it would feel as if nothing had happened, and everything would still be left to play for.

Back at the World Cup for the first time since 2014, when the Elephants were eliminated in the group stage after finishing with three points in Group C alongside Colombia, Greece, and Japan, Ivory Coast are ready to make history and advance past the first round for the first time in the national team’s history.

Ivory Coast made their first World Cup appearance in 2006 and went on to qualify for soccer’s biggest tournament in three straight editions (2006, 2010, and 2014). However, that was about as far as their success went. Although the Elephants won one game in each World Cup they played, they never made it out of the group stage. All in all, through nine World Cup matches, Ivory Coast have won three, lost five, and drawn one. It felt like their best chance to advance to the Round of 16 came when Didier Drogba was still captaining the national team, but things have changed.

In 2026, the eight best third-place teams will advance to the Round of 32, meaning the Elephants have a greater chance to make it out of the group stage once and for all. However, Group E will not make things easy for them. Ivory Coast will face Germany, Ecuador, and Curacao at the 2026 World Cup.

Ivory Coast have never played any of these teams at a World Cup before. That makes sense considering they have only faced nine different countries in the tournament, and a nation like Curacao, which uses “CUW” as its three-letter code, is making its World Cup debut.

As it stands, Ecuador sit in 24th place in the FIFA ranking. That position is largely thanks to the national team’s performance in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers. La Tri finished in second place, behind Argentina, securing their best road to a World Cup in country history.

Led by Argentine head coach Sebastian Beccacece and the likes of Moises Caicedo, Enner Valencia, Willian Pacho, and Piero Hincapie, La Tricolor could emerge as a dark horse right before everyone’s eyes. First, however, it must clear tall hurdles in the form of Germany and Ivory Coast, who could make life hell for La Tri in Group E.

Ecuador’s best ranking of all time

Although their current spot at No. 24 in the FIFA World Rankings is something to be proud of, Ecuador know what it is like to be in the top 10. In fact, that was exactly where La Tri stood in 2013. Ecuador’s highest ranking of all time was 10th, achieved in January 2013.

In a country where the average altitude is over 1,000 meters, Ecuadorians must learn to live with it and are accustomed to the heights. But just as La Tri have experienced success near the top of the FIFA World Rankings, they have also endured low points. At their nadir, Ecuador fell to 76th place in 1995, their lowest ranking ever. On average, Ecuador rank 41st in the FIFA World Rankings.

Biggest climb and drop

Ecuador’s biggest climb in the FIFA World Rankings was a 30-place jump in 1993, whereas their biggest drop came in October 2017, when La Tri fell 25 spots. Ecuador’s decline was largely due to a 3-1 defeat at home to Argentina, which sent La Albiceleste to the 2018 World Cup as Ecuador finished the CONMEBOL qualifiers in eighth place.

Ecuador versus Ivory Coast promises to be a tight matchup between two national teams that may fly under the radar but could very well cause problems for the World Cup contenders. Coached by Argentine Sebastian Beccacece, the national team has the entire Country of Four Worlds filled with hope.

Ecuador finished second in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers, the best finish in the national team’s history, but are far from satisfied. They want more, but must first clear a tall hurdle in the form of Ivory Coast. The saying could never be more accurate—La Tri must address the Elephants in the room.

Anything other than a win against the West African nation could put Ecuador in trouble in its bid to advance from Group E, which is also made up of Germany and Curacao.

What happens if Ecuador beats Ivory Coast?

A win over Ivory Coast would not put Ecuador through to the next stage, as it is only Matchday 1 of Group E, but it would put La Tri in a very good position. Ecuador would move level on points with Germany at three, although it would likely need a lopsided victory to surpass Die Mannschaft on goal differential after the Germans beat Curacao 7-1.

Defeating Ivory Coast would mean Ecuador simply need to beat Curacao in the second group-stage match to qualify for the Round of 32. That is a very realistic scenario, and it would mean La Tri head into the final group match against World Cup favorites Germany with nothing to lose and everything to gain.

What if Ecuador and Ivory Coast tie?

In the event that Ecuador and Ivory Coast’s showdown ends in a stalemate, both teams will walk away from the matchup in Philadelphia with one point. Such a result would leave them in a tight race to advance from Group E, where Germany is expected to finish in first place.

If Ivory Coast and Ecuador draw, they will be keeping a wary eye on each other in their upcoming fixtures. Because the first tiebreaker is the head-to-head result, who advances from the group stage could be determined by who beats Curacao by the larger margin, or loses to Germany by the smaller one. That is what should happen on paper, but anything can happen on a football pitch, and La Tri have reason to believe.

In 2022, they chased “impossible utopias,” as famously stated by then-head coach Gustavo Alfaro, now the manager of Paraguay. In 2026, Ecuador want more than that. Not being able to defeat Ivory Coast might not be the ideal way to start, though.

What happens if Ecuador lose vs. Ivory Coast?

Ecuador won’t be eliminated with a loss to Ivory Coast, but it would face a very steep climb. The Elephants would move into second place (unless they beat Ecuador by more than six goals), and La Tri would need to make up for the lost ground with a strong showing against Curazao while hoping Germany thrashes Ivory Coast.

In the final match of the group stage, Ecuador would need to earn at least a point against Germany and hope Curacao pull off the impossible and secure their first win in World Cup history. Otherwise, Ecuador could be left battling for a third-place spot and a place in the Round of 32.

Dealing with no illness nor physical setback, Koeman’s decision to bench Ake is entirely tactical. Although the versatile defender can play both as a left-footed center back and a left fullback, Koeman is leaving him on the bench as the Netherlands start their pursuit for the country’s first World Cup title.

As for Kluivert, the winger suffered a severe knee injury earlier this year, and although he has played since then, Koeman is taking things slowly with Patrick Kluivert’s son, who logged 45 minutes during the Netherlands’ disappointing loss to Algeria in an international friendly on June 3. In addition to Ake and Kluivert, Memphis Depay won’t be starting, either, for the Oranje against the Samurai Blue.

Who will play in Ake’s and Kluivert’s place?

Ake can slot into the Netherlands lineup and serve his national team in different roles. Thus, the two players who might be considered his replacements are Virgil van Dijk at left center back and Micky van de Ven at left back.

Against Japan, Koeman is opting for a 4-1-2-3 formation, but due to the defenders’ versatility, the scheme could shift into a three-man back line when the Netherlands are in possession of the ball. Denzel Dumfries is always a threat going forward, and he could abandon his initial position on the back line to push into Japanese territory.

On the other hand—and opposite end of the field—Cody Gakpo and Crysencio Summerville, who play on the wing, could be considered Kluivert’s replacements on the starting XI.

The Netherlands’ road ahead

After the opener against Japan, the Oranje will face Sweden in another exciting contest on June 20 at 1:00 p.m. ET. To close out Group F play, the Netherlands will take on Tunisia on June 25 at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Czechia are not eliminated from the 2026 World Cup after the 2-1 loss to South Korea in the opening matchday of Group A. If he cannot complete the game, shows discomfort, or struggles, then Argentina could make an emergency switch in goal. What happened to Martinez?

During warmups ahead of the 2025-26 UEFA Europa League Final, Martinez sustained a fracture to the ring finger on his right hand. “Dibu” is known for his personality and for rising to the occasion in the biggest moments. Thus, it is no mystery that he played in the championship match regardless of the injury. Nothing was going to keep him out of the biggest game of his club career.

If Victor Wembanyama achieves such a milestone in only his third year in the league, comparisons to LeBron will be off to a great start. Needless to say, no other team aside from the Cavs has ever come back from a 3-1 deficit in the NBA Finals.

Those who came close to 3-1 comebacks in NBA Finals

Throughout league history, 23 teams managed to extend the series to seven games after falling behind 3-1. Only LeBron and Cleveland were able to come away with a win in Game 7.

For instance, the Knicks forced a Game 7 after falling behind 3-0 against the Rochester Royals (now the Sacramento Kings) in the 1951 NBA Finals. The Los Angeles Lakers also forced a Game 7 after trailing 3-1 against the Boston Celtics in the 1966 NBA Finals. However, neither team could complete the comeback.

It felt impossible until LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and company rallied from a 3-1 deficit against Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and the Golden State Warriors in 2016. The odds of such a comeback ever happening again are low, but if there’s someone who could pull it off, it might be ‘Wemby’ and the Spurs.

Almost made NBA history

Had San Antonio not blown a 29-point lead in Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals, the Knicks and Spurs would have found themselves on the wrong side of an unprecedented mark in league history. Never before had both NBA finalists lost their first two home games of the series.

Wu-Tang Clan will be in charge of keeping fans on their seats during the intermission in Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals. Coming off a star-studded turnout in Game 3, which included President Donald Trump, New York City mayor Xohran Mamdani, Jay-Z, Spike Lee, Eli Manning, Derek Jeter, Mariska Hargitay, Larry Dacid and many more, Game 4 between the Knicks and Spurs will be no different.

Taylor Swift is attending Madison Square Garden, though without fiancé Travis Kelce. That’s in addition to Timothée Chalamet, Kylie Jenner, and Ben Stiller, who have become regulars at MSG.

Moreover, a large party of New York Giants, including Jaxson Dart, Jameis Winston, and Cam Skattebo were also spotted making their way into the “World’s Most Famous Arena”. Hailey Bieber, Tate McRae, Aaron Judge, Carmelo Anthony, and Nas are other household names making an appearance in New York City for the high-stakes showdown. The VIP list, however, is a lot longer.

Previous halftime show

Game 3 didn’t end how Knicks fans expected, but they were still in for a treat. The halftime show was also headlined by a fellow New Yorker, as Cardi B (born in the Bronx) took center stage. Now, it’s time for Wu-Tang Clan.

Though New York hopes the series won’t go that far, the Knicks are guaranteed to be back at Madison Square Garden for Game 6 if they lose either Game 4 or Game 5. Thus, fans who make their way to the arena above Penn Station can expect another top-notch artist to perform at halftime.

Although Larkin’s trade request is often compared to the examples set by fellow Team USA teammates Jack Eichel, Quinn Hughes, and Matthew Tkachuk, the Red Wings’ captain may be setting an unforeseen precedent. If he gets his way and is moved by Detroit to one of the teams on Larkin’s reported trade list, then the veteran could pull off a move that completely changes the NHL landscape.

Why Larkin’s trade request is different

When a franchise player asks to be traded, the request often comes ahead of a contract year or when there are few years left on his deal. That way, leverage is granted to him because no team wants to risk losing a star to free agency.

However, unrestricted free agency is nowhere near for Larkin. Detroit’s captain is under contract through the 2030-31 NHL season. Regardless, he has managed to put the Red Wings on the clock. The fact the 2026 Upper Deck NHL Draft is right around the corner can also play to Larkin and his camp’s advantage.

Everybody points to the role played by Team USA’s camaraderie in leading several players to ask out of difficult situations around the league. If anything, it only accelerated the process.

But it was always going to be a foregone conclusion. Only Detroit could stop it by winning. The Red Wings didn’t. Larkin deserves a share of the blame for his performance, especially late in the season and at five-on-five, but the writing was on the wall long before, whether the front office in the 313 cared to address it or not.

Red Wings are out of options

It’s time for Detroit to face the music. The Red Wings can twist and maneuver their way through negotiations and trade packages, but there appears to be no avoiding the inevitable. Larkin has made up his mind: he wants out of Detroit.

The fact he is under contract for the next five years may matter little, and a precedent could be set that completely shifts how every struggling franchise handles its stars. If Larkin can free himself from Motor City without needing to flirt with free agency, then the rest of the league may be in trouble, and the NHL’s apex contenders could become unstoppable.

Turning point in NHL history

If the Detroits of the league can’t stop their Larkins from forcing their way to the Vegases, Minnesotas, and Floridas of the world, then it might be all she wrote for the so-called parity in the NHL. What good would long-term deals with full no-movement clauses be?

Larkin may be on the verge of creating a watershed moment. If he gets his way—which is reportedly the direction things are heading—the league may be past the point of no return.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) is the body responsible for establishing the Laws of the Game. In its official rulebook, it is made clear that players are not allowed to take off their shirts during goal celebrations.

The reason players can’t do so is mainly based on the principle of avoiding excessive time-wasting. Moreover, the law is designed to prevent players from displaying political messages, provoking opposing players and fans, and covering team sponsors.

Law 12.4: Disciplinary action

“Players can celebrate when a goal is scored, but the celebration must not be excessive; choreographed celebrations are not encouraged and must not cause excessive time-wasting,” as stated on the official IFAB laws document. “A player must be cautioned, even if the goal is disallowed, for removing the shirt.“

In addition to removing the shirt, other bookable offenses during celebrations include players jumping onto fences and/or engaging with fans in a dangerous manner, covering the head with the shirt, as well as covering one’s head with an item or mask.

Considering VAR will be in use for every game at the 2026 World Cup, players must be entirely confident the goal will stand before removing their shirts. Otherwise, they may be shown a yellow card for nothing. Even if the goal is disallowed, the yellow card will not be rescinded.

Aboubakar’s lesson

During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Cameroon star Vincent Aboubakar scored the game-winning goal in added time to defeat Brazil 1-0. As he celebrated, and with Cameroon already eliminated, he removed his shirt, perhaps forgetting—or simply caring less—about his prior yellow card.

As a result, Aboubakar was shown a second yellow card and sent off. Little did he care, but it was a moment that went viral across the globe. Cameroon and Aboubakar failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, but the memory remains fresh among soccer fans around the world. Perhaps someone will follow in Aboubakar’s footsteps at the 2026 World Cup.

Being such a curious episode, the odds are low of a booked player scoring a goal and removing his shirt, resulting in a red card due to two yellow cards. However, they are never zero.

Expect a lot of yellow cards

Even if that doesn’t happen, there will be no shortage of bookings throughout the 2026 World Cup, and possibly a few for players removing their shirts. Everybody is well aware that such celebrations are against the rulebook, but few can resist the urge, especially after scoring a decisive goal.

In an era where aura-farming is at an all-time high, shirtless celebrations are no exception, and a yellow card might be a fair price to pay.

At the end of the day, the Rangers are in a rough situation, but life in New York City may make it all worthwhile. Perhaps Fox would be interested in leaving the organization ahead of the 2026-27 NHL season, but not for the Sharks, who, for all the forward talent they possess, are still a ways away from becoming true Stanley Cup contenders. If he is to be traded, Fox might want to join a Cup favorite rather than a team that must first go through its growing pains.

San Jose needs defensive help

Although Fox hasn’t openly admitted a desire to leave New York, he remains one of the Rangers’ biggest trade chips should the organization decide to hold a garage sale at Madison Square Garden.

The Sharks might be the most defense-needy team among the NHL’s playoff bubble clubs. With the likes of Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, Michael Misa, and many others leading the forward group, San Jose saw its playoff hopes come crashing down due to a lack of balance between offense and defense.

General manager Mike Grier and the rest of the organization are determined to correct that flaw, arguably the only thing missing from an otherwise superb work at rebuilding the roster. However, it appears Fox will not waive his NMC for the Sharks, and that’s a deal-breaker.

Fox’s contract

In the 2026-27 NHL campaign, Fox will enter the fifth season of his seven-year, $66.5 million contract with the Blueshirts. Fox is signed to a full no-movement clause, which will convert into a 16-team no-trade list in 2027-28.

Perhaps the Sharks are willing to wait one more year for Fox, who will turn 29 next February. However, there might be nothing San Jose—or New York—can do if the blueliner includes the Sharks on his no-trade list.

Would New York want to trade Fox?

As for the Rangers, they may have little interest in parting with their best defenseman, but there are also several benefits to a potential trade. First and foremost, Fox could be the key to working out a deal with San Jose that includes the second overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

The Rangers are reportedly settling for a defenseman with the No. 5 pick, but their draft-night plans could change entirely if they acquire No. 2. If Fox is moved, New York may not even need to part with its own selection and could end up with two picks in the top five.

Pulling off such a move could cost Chris Drury some goodwill—which is already in short supply—with fans in Manhattan. But it could all be forgiven if the Blueshirts land their franchise-saving duo. Given how recent top draft picks have panned out in New York City, however, that might be wishful thinking.

Born in Jericho, New York, it was always Fox’s dream to play for the New York Rangers. He made that crystal clear when he urged the Carolina Hurricanes to trade him to the Broadway Blueshirts before he even made his NHL debut. Fox always wanted to stay home. In the league, that place is Madison Square Garden.

Whether the recent disastrous seasons in Manhattan have changed his thoughts on the Rangers remains unclear. Yet, if Fox is considering a fresh start, it seems clear he won’t leave just anywhere.

Unless it makes sense for him and his family, he’d rather stay in the City That Never Sleeps. As reports indicate, San Jose is not among the options for which Fox would give up his childhood dream.

Considering it’s only a friendly and the 2026 World Cup is right around the corner, there was reason to believe the match could’ve been called off if the weather didn’t improve.

However, these kinds of summer storms are quite common in the Sunshine State, meaning there was a good chance the skies would clear, the pitch drained properly, and the Three Lions and Los Ticos could play their international friendly in Orlando. As it stands, that’s exactly what happened and the game is set to kickoff at 5:00 p.m. ET.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service, though, a flood warning remained in effect until roughly 4:00 p.m. ET. Thus, it was clear the match was never going to start on the original time set.

England’s last game before World Cup

Once the international friendly comes to an end, England will turn its focus entirely to the 2026 World Cup. The Three Lions will make their long-awaited debut against Croatia on June 17 at 4:00 p.m. ET in Arlington, Texas. Considering the venue has a roof, there shouldn’t be much reason for concern about a weather-related delay.

While the Rangers risk reliving the K’Andre Miller situation with Braden Schneider, the defensive corps in the Big Apple is under the spotlight. If Schneider does leave (he is an RFA), New York will lose the only defenseman on its roster originally drafted in the first round by the organization.

Even if Schneider is re-signed in Manhattan, the Rangers need more help, and whether it’s Reid, Verhoeff, Šmits, or Carson Carels, the fifth overall pick in 2026 may be the franchise’s best opportunity to get things right on the blue line.

If the Blueshirts get it wrong, they risk testing the patience of Adam Fox and Vladislav Gavrikov, as well as their top forwards and goaltender Igor Shesterkin. For the time being, Chris Drury is still able to sell his vision for the retool to the players.

Yet, the 2026 NHL Draft represents New York’s best chance to truly put its money where its mouth is. The locker room will be paying close attention. One rough draft night on June 26 at KeyBank Center, and the Rangers may have to throw their plan out the window.

As reported by Elliotte Friedman, Bussi will be in net whereas Andersen won’t even be serving as backup. Instead, Pyotr Kochetkov will be the second-string netminder in Game 4.

After posting the best numbers of any NHL goaltender throughout the 2026 postseason, Andersen has been exposed on several occasions by the Golden Knights. Game 3 was no different, and with rookie Bussi playing lights out, the decision has been made—one that could determine the Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup hopes. Falling behind 3-1 in the series could very well be all she wrote for Carolina.

Is Andersen injured?

Although Brind’Amour and the Hurricanes have not reported anything of the sort, there might be reason for concern regarding Andersen’s health. During Game 3, Andersen was hit in the head by Vegas forward Ivan Barbashev on a goal that was taken off the board after Carolina challenged.

The concussion spotter didn’t intervene, but Andersen went on to allow four goals before being pulled from the game. Perhaps it was a combination of health and performance concerns.

Perhaps a head injury slipped under the league’s radar, and the Hurricanes are now dealing with the aftermath. However, Friedman reports that Andersen is listed as a scratch rather than on the injured report. And it’s been a common sight for Andersen to be out of the lineup entirely in games he doesn’t start.

The undrafted 27-year-old rookie was one of the biggest storylines of the 2025-26 NHL campaign. He was Carolina’s leading goaltender throughout the regular season, posting a 31-6-2 record in 39 appearances while recording an .895 save percentage and a 2.47 GAA.

However, Bussi was benched in the postseason in favor of the playoff-experienced Andersen, which initially proved to be the right call. Andersen’s form, though, is clearly waning, and Carolina believes it’s time to roll the dice with a bold call.

That’s the situation Brind’Amour faced, who was torn between riding the hot hand in Game 4—even if it means throwing the veteran netminder under the bus—or sticking with the 36-year-old, who still has something to prove in his pursuit of a first Stanley Cup. Now, there is no turning back. Carolina’s season is on the line, and it’s all in Bussi’s right glove and left blocker.

“A source close to the situation, who was part of the NHL Combine, tells me Toronto told Gavin McKenna during their interview with the player that they intend on drafting him with the first overall pick,” as reported by Shawn Hutcheon on X.

McKenna has been the consensus first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft for quite some time, but recent buzz left the door open for Swedish winger Ivar Stenberg to leapfrog him and land in Toronto instead. Based on the latest report, though, that possibility appears to be off the table, as the Maple Leafs have made up their minds.

More signs McKenna is headed to Toronto

In addition to reports of the Maple Leafs’ straightforwardness with McKenna, a report from Scott Wheeler of The Athletic serves as further evidence that the Yukon native is bound for Ontario—and that the rest of the NHL is making peace with that outcome.

“People around the league are more and more convinced it’s going to be McKenna for the Leafs, and nothing I heard in Buffalo this week steered me in another direction. I know they like Chase Reid, but the sense I get is it’s McKenna,” Wheeler reported.

The report also noted that Toronto representatives visited McKenna’s hometown of Whitehorse, and the young winger is scheduled to visit The Six after the NHL Combine. It seems like a done deal, although it won’t become official until draft night in Buffalo.

When is the 2026 NHL Draft?

The 2026 Upper Deck NHL Draft will be held June 26-27 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York. Based on the latest indicators, it appears McKenna’s selection will kick off the first round in the City of Good Neighbors. How the rest of the board unfolds, however, remains the true mystery heading into the draft.

As reported by USA Today’s Art Stapleton, the Giants dialed up a rushing play for Skattebo on the opening play of 11-on-11 drills during Day 2 of mandatory minicamp. Considering Skattebo was only a limited participant in drills on Day 1, such a decision could be viewed as Harbaugh and the Giants giving a massive vote of confidence and showing trust in the Arizona State alum.

Up until he suffered a dislocated ankle, fractured fibula, and ruptured ligament in his right leg in Week 8 of the 2025 NFL season, Skattebo had been one of the best rookies in the league. As he makes steady progress in his return to action, the Giants are making it clear they intend to rely on him to establish the ground game.

It’s only mandatory minicamp, and New York isn’t playing anyone, but the play-calling decision speaks volumes about where the franchise stands and the chemistry between the coaching staff and the leaders on the field.

Giants’ kicking competition

On a different note, away from the offense and onto special teams, the Giants made a brazen move by cutting veteran kicker Jason Sanders. They must now lie in the bed they made.

Dominic Zvada (22 years old) and Ben Sauls (24) are the only kickers on the roster and will inevitably be competing for the starting job. So far, the undrafted rookie out of Michigan appears to be running away with the role.

As reported by Stapleton and other beat writers at practice, Zvada has been perfect through the first two days of mandatory minicamp, connecting on all 13 of his field-goal attempts, while Sauls is off to a rough start, making just 8 of 14.

New York under questioning

Fans on social media are beginning to question New York’s decision to part ways with Sanders, as Zvada has shown promising signs but isn’t really facing a competitor who can put him under pressure. If Sauls’ struggles continue, it might not be long before the Giants make a roster move, parting ways with the Pittsburgh alum and bringing in a more experienced kicker to give Zvada a run for his money.

As things stand, the kicker position remains the main concern for the G-Men, with the starter still undecided. Coming off a 2025 NFL season in which Big Blue cycled through four different kicking options, Harbaugh and company will surely want to nip the problem in the bud as soon as possible.

After a 1-1 draw, Nigeria fell in a penalty shootout to DR Congo in the African playoff final. With that, DR Congo moved on to the intercontinental playoff, where it defeated Jamaica to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. According to The Sporting News, the last time Trump was in attendance for a Knicks victory was March 26, 2012. More than 14 years later, he hopes to bring good luck as New York looks to close out the series quickly and capture its third NBA championship in franchise history.

“According to several sources, Babcock has spoken directly with owner Daryl Katz. Babcock has met with or spoken to several members of the team’s leadership group. Whatever happened in those meeting(s) was enough to eliminate any potential objection,” Elliotte Friedman reported on Sportsnet.

With McDavid and the rest of the locker room open to welcoming Babcock, the Oilers await any notice from the NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA) that could put their plans on hold. If there is no risk of legal trouble, then the Oilers may hire Babcock to lead the group next season. Babcock last coached an NHL game in November 2019, when he was the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Since then, his name has been synonymous with controversy.

Babcock’s drama in Columbus

After his stint with the Maple Leafs came to an end in 2019, Babcock took on an ad honorem role in college ice hockey. He returned to the NHL in July 2023, when he signed on to become the head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

However, he resigned from the position before making his coaching debut amid allegations of improper behavior. Reports at the time stated that he invaded players’ privacy by going through their phones.

Since then, Babcock hadn’t set foot inside an NHL organization’s facilities. However, as pleased as he admittedly was in retirement, it seems Edmonton may lure him back to the NHL.

Oilers may have convinced Babcock

The reported conversation with Katz is a strong starting point, and the fact that McDavid and the players are on board with the potential hiring may present an opportunity too good to pass up. After all, Babcock may get a chance to coach the best player in the NHL, and who knows how much longer McDavid will remain in the Gateway to the North.

If he signs in Edmonton, Babcock will get the chance to determine whether the Oilers are reaching the end of the road with McDavid or if he’s there to stay. Either way, it appears McDavid is comfortable letting Babcock take the wheel and put his future in the Stanley Cup-winning head coach’s hands.
