https://bolavip.com/en/soccer/how-xabi-alonso-plans-to-protect-chelsea-from-injury-chaos

Xabi Alonso's master plan for a Chelsea that needs to return to being a threat in Europe.

Xabi Alonso spoke out during Chelsea’s pre-season tour in Australia, making it clear that avoiding an injury crisis is his top priority. Addresssing squad depth and rotation, he revealed that building multiple options across the roster is non-negotiable if the club wants to stay competitive.

When pressed on the exact number of players he needs for his Chelsea roster heading into the campaign, Alonso kept his stance open. “Not too long, not too short, what is the number? I can’t give you that number,” he stated directly during his Sydney press conference.

He then elaborated fully on the core philosophy behind his rotation strategy for the upcoming season. “But for sure, we need to have options because you know that we could be unlucky with injuries so we need to prepare for that. We can have different circumstances. We need to manage minutes.”

Can this plan work for Chelsea?

On paper, Alonso’s rotation framework is logical, but its success depends on whether Chelsea’s current bench possesses enough baseline quality to maintain high-level performances. If the talent gap between the starters and backups remains too wide, rotating players to prevent physical fatigue could easily lead to dropped points on the pitch instead.

Alonso during Chelsea pre-season (Getty Images)

Furthermore, Chelsea desperately needs this strategy to work after recent campaigns were completely wrecked by medical emergencies. During the disastrous 2023–24 season, the Blues suffered an astonishing 40+ separate injuries, leaving as many as 10+ first-team players sidelined at once, while late 2025 brought another spike in squad injuries that destroyed all competitive momentum.

Restoring Chelsea’s european threat

Chelsea has been searching for domestic and European consistency for years, having not lifted the Premier League title since the 2016-17 season or the Champions League since 2021. While the club has collected smaller trophies recently, they have struggled to project that feared, dominant presence that once made European giants dread playing against them.

Despite a brief, turbulent stint at Real Madrid where dressing room dynamics cut his tenure short, Alonso’s tactical clarity and elite status as a player give him real authority at Stamford Bridge. If he can manage squad morale and convince high-profile stars to embrace rotation, his disciplined blueprint could finally make Chelsea a relentless threat once again.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers still owe Vita Vea a huge paycheck.

Vita Vea is looking for a completely fresh start with a new franchise after requesting a trade, but his massive salary on his current Buccaneers contract makes a deal tricky, leaving his immediate future wide open.

“Vea is scheduled to earn $18 million this season on his current deal. He did not participate in the spring program with the #Buccaneers. He’s expected to be with the team for training camp, though his participation is TBD,” NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported on X.

Vea remains an appealing target for any defense, but that hefty price tag will make trade negotiations tricky. Still, as a proven veteran who’s spent his entire career in Tampa Bay since entering the league in 2018, he’s bound to draw serious interest around the NFL.

If Vea is traded, who pays the $18 million?

The new team pays it. The $18 million represents his remaining base salary and active bonuses for the upcoming season. Once a player is traded, the new team inherits his contract and becomes responsible for paying his weekly game checks and future salary.

Vea with the Bucs (Getty Images)

The Buccaneers are off the hook for the $18 million, but they still take a financial hit called “Dead Money.” When teams give out signing bonuses, they pay the cash upfront but spread the salary cap hit over several years. If Tampa Bay trades Vea, all remaining bonus money they already paid him in past years immediately accelerates onto their salary cap.

What can a veteran player like Vea bring to a franchise?

At 6’4″ and nearly 350 pounds, Vea is a dominant interior force. When healthy, he brings traits that completely transform a defense. Vea routinely eats up double teams in the middle of the field. Because opponents usually have to commit two offensive linemen just to block him, it frees up linebackers behind him to run clean and make easy tackles on ball-carriers.

Curry would make more than LeBron James in the upcoming 2026-27 season.

Stephen Curry could sign an extension that would blow LeBron James’ new salary with the Philadelphia 76ers out of the water, we’re talking more than 17 times what the former Laker will make after taking some heat from critics like Charles Barkley.

According to a report from Evan Sidery, Curry is eligible for a two-year, $136.7 million extension with the Warriors. That would dwarf James’ two-year deal with the 76ers, where he had to take a massive pay cut.

While James will make just under $4 million a year, Curry would average $68.35 million annually if he signs the deal with Golden State. That would easily keep him among the highest-paid players in the NBA. In fact, it’s even more than James made with the Lakers, a move Derek Fisher recently defended, shutting down claims that LeBron was just “ring-chasing.”

Who has higher career earnings between Curry and James?

James takes the crown here thanks to two decades of dominance and massive off-court deals. Even though Curry currently makes more money per season than anyone else in the NBA, LeBron’s 20-plus years in the league have pushed his total combined earnings well past the $1.2 billion mark, officially making him a billionaire.

James and Curry (Getty Images)

Curry isn’t hurting by any means, having pulled in roughly $500 million throughout his career between salary and endorsements. But because LeBron got a six-year head start and built an absolute empire of business equity and shoe deals, his lifetime total stays well out of reach.

Curry’s Warriors extension isn’t a done deal yet

However, Curry locking in that extension with Golden State isn’t guaranteed. As Sidery noted on X, “If Curry doesn’t immediately sign, this could be a tactic to place pressure on Golden State building a more competitive roster around him.” So, we’ll have to wait and see if Curry takes the money to officially out-earn James for the 2026-27 season.

https://bolavip.com/en/nba/why-hasnt-russell-westbrook-signed-with-an-nba-team-yet

Things are getting extremely complicated for Russell Westbrook, who could start the 2026–27 season in the worst possible way.

The free agent market for Russell Westbrook has cooled down significantly as the offseason progresses toward training camp. A harsh reality faces the former league MVP, who has struggled to find a long-term home since leaving Oklahoma City and could now open the upcoming season unsigned.

According to Evan Sidery, Westbrook’s market stagnated despite averaging 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.4 rebounds last NBA season. “Russell Westbrook is not generating much, if any, interest on the free agent market. It appears to be a likely scenario Westbrook opens the 2026-27 season not signed. After being on seven teams in the past nine years, this could soon be end of Westbrook’s Hall of Fame career.”

With teams prioritizing perimeter spacing and low-maintenance defenders, a ball-dominant playmaker poses a stylistic fit challenge. Rebuilding franchises prefer giving development minutes to young guards, while contenders hesitate to hand their second unit to a volatile veteran.

How Westbrook can value-add as a veteran presence

While Westbrook may no longer fit as a full-time starter, he can still transform a contender’s second unit by serving as its primary engine. Letting him run the offense for 14 to 18 minutes a night allows primary stars to rest without watching bench leads evaporate.

Russell Westbook playing for the Kings (Getty Images)

Beyond his on-court production, Westbrook provides essential floor-general insurance across a grueling 82-game regular season. Having a former MVP on the bench shields a roster from falling apart when starting guards inevitably deal with minor injuries.

Bargain price tag and realistic team destinations

Financially speaking, Westbrook is one of the cheapest veteran options available since he projects to cost only a $3.6 million veteran minimum salary. Under current CBA rules, the NBA reimburses teams for a portion of 10+ year veteran minimum deals, keeping his actual salary cap hit remarkably lightweight.

A team like the Miami Heat could view him as an energetic spark off the bench. Meanwhile, salary-capped contenders like the Philadelphia 76ers or a re-engagement with the Sacramento Kings remain sensible fits if backcourt injuries strike late in the summer.

Derek Fisher believes the 76ers will benefit from LeBron James' arrival.

Derek Fisher is one of the latest to speak out in support of LeBron James and his upcoming tenure with the Philadelphia 76ers. Addressing the critics, Fisher simply said the team should be grateful to have a player who arrives with a championship mindset.

“You’re not ring chasing when you’re the guy that creates rings,” Fisher said on Derek and Decker on 97.1 The Fan. His comment clearly echoed Shaquille O’Neal’s recent support for James before LeBron announced he was joining the 76ers on a two-year deal.

While James hasn’t faced overwhelming backlash, despite taking a significant pay cut, figures like Magic Johnson are still eager to see what he can accomplish alongside Joel Embiid in Philadelphia.

Fisher compares James to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Fisher even compared LeBron’s career moves to those of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who won six NBA titles across two different franchises. James has also won titles with multiple teams, securing four rings across three franchises: Miami, Cleveland, and Los Angeles.

“Go back in NBA sports history… Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He didn’t chase rings.

Fisher won all his rings with one franchise

Although Fisher is defending James, it is worth noting that Fisher won all five of his NBA championships with a single franchise: the Lakers. While he played for other teams like Utah, Dallas, and Golden State, his championship success came exclusively in Los Angeles.

It's a bold prediction from Bill Simmons for LeBron James, who has yet to even step on the court for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Ever since LeBron James his intention to play in Philadelphia, analysts have been trying to figure out what the 76ers will look like with the legendary veteran in the fold. Now, Bill Simmons has weighed in with a bold prediction: this team could crash and burn just like the Lakers did over a decade ago.

“There’s 2012 Lakers potential where this looks awesome on paper… You have LeBron who’s 41… Embiid, who never plays. And Jaylen Brown on a new team trying to fit his way. There’s an unhappy version of this,” Simmons said on his podcast.

Simmons’ quote quickly went viral, with Yahoo Sports picking up the story. It isn’t just a hot take, it’s a stark warning of how wrong things could go for James in Philadelphia, where even figures like Magic Johnson are wondering how the Sixers will adapt to a 41-year-old superstar.

Why is Simmons comparing the Sixers to the 2012 Lakers?

In the summer of 2012, the Lakers added two-time MVP Steve Nash and prime defensive powerhouse Dwight Howard to a core that already featured Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and Metta World Peace. Sports Illustrated famously featured them on the cover with the headline, “NOW THIS IS GOING TO BE FUN.” They were instant championship favorites.

Morris, Bryant and Nash during the 2012 season (Getty Images)

But it wasn’t just on-court friction. The 2012 Lakers were plagued by coaching drama. Head coach Mike Brown was fired after a 1–4 start. Instead of bringing back Phil Jackson, the clear favorite of fans and players alike, management hired Mike D’Antoni, whose fast-paced system clashed with an aging, heavy frontcourt.

Simmons isn’t alone in his skepticism. Former NBA shooter Danny Green noted that stacking a roster won’t solidify James as the GOAT. Critics argue that pairing Embiid with the former Laker could create a volatile dynamic. With so many big personalities on one team, a single injury, much like Steve Nash’s in 2012, could instantly derail Philadelphia’s season.

How the 76ers can avoid the 2012 Lakers’ fate

Philadelphia can’t afford to play desperate basketball in January or February. With LeBron James turning 41 and Joel Embiid’s extensive injury history, Nick Nurse has to treat the regular season like a marathon.

Prioritizing rest, monitoring minutes, and letting younger legs like Tyrese Maxey handle the night-to-night scoring load through the winter will be critical to ensuring their superstars reach April healthy.

49ers injury update: What we know about Vederian Lowe and Christian Kirk

https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/49ers-injury-update-what-we-know-about-vederian-lowe-and-christian-kirk

Lowe and Kirk's absences could open the door for other players to step up, meaning the 49ers wouldn't take too much of a hit to start the season.

The San Francisco 49ers are already dealing with a few headaches before the 2026 NFL season even kicks off, and now two more potential injuries have cropped up. Details remain thin on both Vederian Lowe and Christian Kirk, with little officially known about what either player is dealing with.

Lowe’s situation is slightly clearer, though it’s still unconfirmed what actually happened to his foot or ankle. Offensive line coach Chris Foerster simply mentioned he hopes it isn’t anything too serious, according to a report on X from Matt Barrows.

As for Kirk, there’s no official word yet. Barrows didn’t offer much on X beyond his initial observation that the wideout “walked off with a trainer midway through the session.” For now, the team is still more concerned about whether Kyle Shanahan will be able to travel to Australia for the 49ers-Rams game.

Breaking down Kirk’s situation

Sports medicine specialist Dr. Jesse Morse chimed in on X about what to watch for with Kirk. He pointed out that Kirk’s history is worth monitoring, especially after an injury-riddled 2025 season that sidelined him for several weeks and kept him off the field.

Christian Kirk with the Texans (Getty Images)

“Kirk’s had his fair share of injuries. He dealt with hamstring injuries that caused him to miss multiple games early in 2025 (including Weeks 1–2 and later re-aggravations). He also had a collarbone injury that ended his 2024 season with the Jaguars and prior issues (including groin/core muscle),” Dr. Morse wrote on X.

Who benefits from Lowe and Kirk’s injuries?

If Lowe and Kirk are forced to miss the first two or three weeks of the season, San Francisco has options. In the receiver room, an opening creates room for guys like Ricky Pearsall and De’Zhaun Stribling to step into bigger roles early on. That’s one area where the Niners shouldn’t panic just yet.

Lowe’s potential absence shouldn’t keep the coaching staff up at night, either. The Niners still have three healthy left tackles in Trent Williams, Austen Pleasants, and Isaac Alarcon. If they need extra depth, they can easily cross-train someone else or pull a guy up from the practice squad.

Magic Johnson is just the latest voice to defend LeBron James and his decision to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Magic Johnson has had a front-row seat to LeBron James‘ career, and he knows what King James brings to the table. With LeBron’s move to the Philadelphia 76ers, Magic recognizes that Philly just became a whole lot more dangerous.

The takeaway from Magic’s message was clear: “LeBron makes the Sixers one of the best teams in the NBA.” Magic sees Philadelphia as an instant contender simply because James joined the squad and took a massive pay cut to make it happen.

Yet, Magic didn’t just shower him with praise. He raised a fair question about how the Sixers will function with a veteran like LeBron on the roster. Philly likes to dominate ball possession and dictate the tempo, a pace it remains to be seen if the former Laker can still keep up with.

More than just praise

Magic’s comments stand out against the backdrop of recent noise from critics like Charles Barkley. Still, his message isn’t blind praise or harsh criticism, it’s cautious optimism. The Sixers got a premier talent, but they have to manage him wisely.

How Nick Nurse will integrate James remains a mystery. Either way, Philadelphia’s floor should still be a solid playoff run, having made the postseason in two of their three years under Nurse.

Despite the noise, LeBron continues to draw backing from around the league. Derek Fisher also pointed out what James brings to Philadelphia, clapping back at critics who claim he’s just chasing rings without recognizing the value he adds to every franchise he joins.

How did LeBron James perform in his final season with the Lakers?

In his final season with the Lakers, LeBron James continued to defies father time by averaging 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per game over 60 contests. Shooting 51.5% from the field in 33.2 minutes a night, King James earned his 22nd career All-Star selection before closing his chapter in Los Angeles.

Among so many critics, someone came forward to defend LeBron James following days before his announcement that he will play with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Shaquille O’Neal came out strong in defense of LeBron James just days before the superstar sent shockwaves through the league by joining the Philadelphia 76ers. Instead of faulting James for seeking another championship, O’Neal insisted that pursuing ultimate glory is exactly what top-tier athletes are supposed to do.

“I think he’s going to go somewhere he can win another ring,” O’Neal noted on July 21 speaking to Mona Kosar Abdi on Extra when assessing potential landing spots for the superstar. “Maybe Miami. Maybe Golden State. Maybe even Philly.”

“Once we’re done playing, we can never play again,” O’Neal said during the sit-down interview. “You never want to retire saying, ‘I should have done this. I should have done that.’” His remarks highlight how top contenders remain viable options for players like James, who is even willing to take a historic pay cut to play again.

Why so many critics target LeBron James

“A lot of haters call it ring chasing,” O’Neal stated while dismantling the negative narrative. “But you’re supposed to chase rings. If you chase rings and accomplish getting them, that’s what we call greatness. Those who haven’t achieved greatness call it ring chasing because they haven’t achieved greatness.”

Shaquille O’Neal says LeBron James should chase another championship, not worry about the critics

“I think he’s going to go somewhere he can win another ring.”

“Maybe Miami. Maybe Golden State. Maybe even Philly.”

“Once we’re done playing, we can never play again.”

“You never… pic.twitter.com/pkQXAIiUIz
— Isaac Bassey (@0xBassey) July 24, 2026

The persistent backlash against LeBron James, which includes harsh criticism from Charles Barkley, often stems from how he reshaped player empowerment in modern sports. When he made his high-profile move to the Miami Heat in 2010, critics argued that constructing powerhouse rosters diluted the traditional competitive drive of the league.

Did LeBron James ever play on the same team as Shaquille O’Neal?

Yes, LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal were actually teammates during the 2009–2010 NBA season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cleveland signed the veteran center in an effort to provide James with interior size and championship experience during his first stint with the franchise.

Although the pairing generated massive media coverage and fan excitement, their time together was brief and plagued by injuries. O’Neal was near the end of his illustrious career, and the Cavaliers ultimately fell short in the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Boston Celtics, ending their single season as teammates.

If the San Francisco 49ers are without Kyle Shanahan for the opening weeks of the 2026 season, it could deal a heavy blow to the franchise.

Kyle Shanahan faces a fresh challenge even before the 2026 NFL season kicks off with the San Francisco 49ers. As he recovers, the hope is he’ll resume his duties as head coach, something General Manager John Lynch addressed ahead of Week 1 vs. Los Angeles Rams.

Following news of Shanahan’s accident, questions arose about whether he could continue leading the 49ers and, specifically, travel with the team to Australia. Lynch pushed back on those concerns, stating: “That is not what we’re anticipating. The expectation is, long before that he’ll be better.”

Still, it may come down to the wire on whether Shanahan can make the trip. Lynch’s comments leave some uncertainty entering a season that could prove tough for San Francisco, according to a report from a San Francisco Chronicle writer.

Another report suggests a longer absence

In a piece for Sports Illustrated, Grant Cohn reported that Shanahan could miss anywhere from a single week to the entire season if the concussion he suffered doesn’t heal in time. Recovery requires extended rest and total commitment to getting healthy.

Cohn consulted a doctor regarding the injury. The physician noted, and Cohn wrote in his article, that the 49ers coach was likely knocked unconscious during the crash. The doctor added that out of 100 concussion patients, about 10% recover within a week, while another 10% need a full year to heal.

An official medical update from the 49ers is still pending. Regardless of whether someone is an NFL head coach or not, head trauma demands caution to prevent long-term complications. Entering 2026, Shanahan is set for his tenth season in San Francisco.

The 49ers’ early 2026 schedule

Missing Shanahan to start the year would be a blow. Beyond the opener against the Rams in Australia, the 49ers return home for a three-game homestand against Miami, Arizona, and Denver. Heading into that stretch without their head coach would be a tough test for team morale.

LeBron James will make significantly less playing in Philadelphia.

LeBron James isn’t done breaking records, but this time it isn’t about scoring points. Instead, he will setting a financial record by taking an shockingly low salary with the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2026-27 season.

The $8 million James will make over the next two years in Philly automatically marks the biggest pay cut in NBA history, according to a report by Frank Urbina for HoopsHype. It is a massive drop compared to what he was making with the Lakers.

His decision didn’t come without backlash, though. Charles Barkley criticized the move, maintaining that James still falls short of his GOAT standards unless he actually delivers a championship ring to Philadelphia.

James’s massive pay cut to play in Philly

To anyone not used to making millions in the NBA, the sheer amount James surrendered is staggering: he took $48.75 million less than what he made with the Lakers, a monumental pay cut. But a player like LeBron won’t feel much financial pressure, considering his net worth sits well above $1 billion.

LeBron James looks on.

James’s salary in Philly will sit at just $3.88 million per year, more than enough for him to live comfortably in the city while playing alongside a stacked roster with the 76ers. That superteam dynamic drew harsh criticism from former teammate Danny Green, who called out James’s habit of joining “packed teams.”

The lowest salary of James’ career

This contract marks the lowest salary of LeBron’s professional career since his 2003 rookie season, when he made $4.01 million with the Cleveland Cavaliers. In the final year of his Philadelphia deal, he’ll earn $4 million to round out the roughly $8 million package he signed for.

Another ranking where Messi dominates, finishing ahead of other big-name stars from the 2026 World Cup.

Lionel Messi is still making headlines even though the 2026 World Cup has come to an end. This time, he tops a high-profile ranking of the tournament’s 50 best players, landing the No. 1 spot ahead of Kylian Mbappé, Rodri, and Jude Bellingham.

The list comes from The New York Times and writer Liam Twomey, who rolled out various rankings throughout the World Cup. Messi held onto the top spot from the semifinals onward, with Twomey calling him one of the most individually impactful players in the entire tournament.

Mbappé surprisingly takes second place despite France missing the final and dropping the third-place match to Bellingham’s England, who claimed fourth in the Times rankings.

The top 10 World Cup players by The New York Times

Messi is the lone Argentine to make the top 10 in Twomey’s 50-player list. Spain and France dominate the upper tier, combining for six of the top 10 spots. It proves that even on a roster without heavy top-end representation, Messi still stands completely in a league of his own.

Mbappe and his teammates during the 2026 World Cup.

Lionel Messi

Kylian Mbappé

Rodri

Jude Bellingham

Pau Cubarsí

Aymeric Laporte

Erling Haaland

Harry Kane

Michael Olise

Ousmane Dembélé

Players didn’t make the list on goal-scoring alone; overall contribution mattered just as much. Olise, for instance, earned his spot after dishing out seven assists during the tournament. And as Twomey noted, even though players like Dembélé had inexplicable off-games, like his poor performance against Spain, their complete body of work was enough to keep them among the elite.

Spain’s presence in the top tier is particularly impressive. They landed three players in the top 10, including Laporte, who was outstanding in defense, and Cubarsí, who ranked surprisingly high. Meanwhile, Rodri remained a mainstay near the top throughout the tournament thanks to his consistently dominant play.

Why do rankings like this matter to a player’s career?

Much like the FIFA Power Rankings released after the final, lists from prestigious outlets like The New York Times carry real weight. They keep a player’s profile high, maintain momentum in their career, and put them squarely on the radar of top clubs looking to offer lucrative new deals.

In a golden opportunity, Barack Obama approaches Caitlin Clark to tell her not to pay attention to all the 'nonsense' around her.

Barack Obama shared words of encouragement with Caitlin Clark during a WNBA All-Stars practice at his Presidential Center in Chicago. Greeting the point guard, Obama said, “Oh hey, Caitlin, how are you? Really nice to meet you, you’re great, you’re fantastic.” He immediately offered some grounding advice, adding, “Don’t let all this nonsense get you back.”

Obama continued by comparing her sudden rise to his own journey into public life. “You know, I always say one of the things that was luckiest for me was, I didn’t get famous a lot, like 45,” he explained. He drew a personal connection by adding, “I mean, you’re my daughters age, and I have that much, you know, version of nonsense.”

The former president urged the young WNBA star to stay focused on her passion for basketball. “So don’t lose that joy,” Obama advised her during their conversation. “The game’s like the game. And you’re hooper. You always say, and you’re on a nice little runright now.”

Why Obama offered his advice to Clark

Obama offered this guidance because he understands the unique burden of sudden, intense public scrutiny. Having navigated massive global media attention himself, he recognized how outside noise can easily overwhelm a rising star. His goal was to remind Clark to keep her passion intact while tuning out distraction.

President Obama tells Caitlin Clark not to let the media nonsense get her down and that she’s a great player.
As a lifelong basketball fan, Obama also wanted to show personal support to one of the game’s brightest icons. By relating her experience to his own daughters’ generation, he offered a warm, parental perspective on managing rapid fame.

Indiana Fever standings and Clark’s season performance

The Indiana Fever currently hold a 17-10 record, placing them near the top of the Eastern Conference. Clark continues to anchor the team’s offense, averaging roughly 21.0 points, 7.9 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game. Her stellar play has kept Indiana firmly in playoff contention as the regular season unfolds.

Roberto Carlos mentions who, for him, was the most important player of the first Galácticos era.

Roberto Carlos believes that David Beckham stood out above icons like Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, and Luis Figo. While admitting Zidane held the top spot overall, the Brazilian legend singled out Beckham as an indispensable teammate. He noted that the English midfielder gave everything on the pitch, constantly running, passing, and playing with total heart.

His revealing comments came during an appearance on the Obi One podcast back on November 27, 2025. Sitting down with former midfielder John Obi Mikel, Carlos offered a unique inside perspective on their famous dressing room. The discussion highlighted how the squad viewed each other beyond the massive public hype surrounding Real Madrid.

Addressing who was truly the best, Carlos emphasized that “during those Galactico years Beckham was the most consistent“ player in Madrid. He explained that while others grabbed headlines, Beckham was “the player who did everything for the team.”

What the Real Madrid fans missed

Expanding further on Beckham’s daily impact, Carlos praised his former teammate’s unbelievable work ethic during both training sessions and matches. He explained that the English international was always willing to drop back, track down opponents, and handle gritty defensive duties without complaint.

Carlos starts talking about how important Beckham was beginning at the 10:39 mark

In Carlos’s eyes, Beckham’s true value came from his commitment to the collective effort rather than personal glory. “Beckham didn’t play for the fans. He played for Real Madrid,” Carlos stated during the interview. He added that Beckham “always put the team first,” which defined him as a genuinely complete player.

The Galacticos era right now

The term “Galacticos” is most famous for describing Florentino Perez’s initial presidency from 2000 to 2006, when superstar signings arrived every summer. However, history shows there was not just one single Galactico era in Madrid. A second booming period took place between 2009 and 2018, defined by the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, and Gareth Bale.

In fact, a third Galactico era has been actively running since around 2018. This modern chapter shifts focus toward securing elite young talents like Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham alongside massive blockbuster arrivals. It proves that Real Madrid’s superstar culture remains alive and evolving today.

Bryce Harper gave his take on why the Mets are struggling so much.

Bryce Harper recently broke down why the New York Mets have fallen off so hard, saying out loud what a lot of people are already thinking: losing Pete Alonso and other key players completely torpedoed the team’s future. The 2026 season has spiraled into a nightmare, one so bad they even had to fire manager Carlos Mendoza.

Speaking on a podcast with Mookie Betts, Harper admitted the Mets used to be a legit threat to the Phillies back when Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo were in the lineup. But once they packed their bags, Harper and Philly stopped seeing New York as a dangerous opponent, especially with how this 2026 season is unfolding.

Without trying to throw shade, Harper’s take points to a clear reality: the team’s downfall stems directly from losing those core guys. According to him, when they left, they took a chunk of the Mets’ identity with them, a point plenty of analysts have brought up while blasting the New York front office for its recent roster moves.

Who is Philadelphia’s biggest rival right now?

Before bringing up the Mets, Harper noted that the Phillies have had some grueling battles with the Atlanta Braves, making them Philly’s toughest on-field opponent at the moment. Still, Harper acknowledged that Atlanta isn’t quite a traditional rival in the classic sense, a title that historically belongs to New York.

On a recent podcast, Mookie Betts and Bryce Harper broke down how the #Mets fell apart after losing their identity. 👀 Harper said the Mets are the Phillies’ biggest rival at their best, and knew Atlanta’s pitching would improve after the Mets let Jeremy Hefner walk. pic.twitter.com/mS2MjKHGlO
— NYM News (@NYM_News) July 24, 2026

With the Mets in total freefall, Philadelphia and the rest of the division are obviously reaping the benefits. But teams better stay on their toes: New York could pull off a turn-around at any moment, if not now, then certainly by next season.

Who has the upper hand in the Mets–Phillies series?

Philadelphia holds the all-time edge with a 567–539 record over New York, including a 566–536 lead in regular-season matchups. However, the Mets own the postseason advantage with a 3–1 series lead, courtesy of their 2024 NLDS victory. New York also holds the most recent blow-out win between the two, a 24–4 rout in 2018, though it still falls short of the Phillies’ franchise-record 26–7 beatdown of the Mets back in 1985.

Charles Barkley dropped a lengthy breakdown on LeBron James, staying true to form as one of the toughest critics of the new 76ers star.

Charles Barkley didn’t hold back his frustration following LeBron James’ high-profile decision to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. The Hall of Famer instantly called out the move, pointing to a familiar pattern of chasing elite talent instead of fighting through adversity.

The core issue, as Barkley put it, is that “the number one knock on LeBron for older guys like myself has always been, ‘Yo, man, you always stacking your team.’” He argued that jumping to another loaded roster simply adds fuel to a long-standing critique.

“He stacked in Miami,” Barkley noted, adding that LeBron did the exact same thing in Cleveland and Los Angeles before bringing that approach to Philly. Because of that choice, Barkley made clear that he intends to keep “the same criticism I’ve always had.”

Barkley contextualizes where James ranks among the Greats

When evaluating where LeBron ranks among all-time greats, Barkley placed him right behind Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, expressing frustration that fans treat any alternate opinion like pure “blasphemy.”

He pointed out that Jordan earned his legendary status by taking beatings from the Pistons and Celtics before vowing to get “bigger, stronger, faster” to conquer them directly.

Beyond the basketball debate, Barkley was visibly irritated by the timing of the announcement, complaining that the media ruined his planned golf trip and forced him to turn around and work on a Friday just because “this doofus had to make his announcement.”

The ultimate challenge for James

Despite all the heavy criticism, Barkley left the door open for LeBron to completely rewrite the record books if this Philadelphia experiment yields historic results: “If he wins back-to-back championships and walks away this thing at 44, 45 – I’ll say something I ain’ain’t never said before. I think I just saw the greatest basketball player ever.”

Two sharp critiques of LeBron James following his arrival in Philadelphia.

Rob Parker is one of many analysts and reporters critical of LeBron James joining the Philadelphia 76ers, recently claiming the star is simply chasing another ring. Meanwhile, Danny Green also pulled no punches, calling out what he believes would be an ‘invalid’ championship for James.

“LeBron is a ring chaser, he’s the ultimate ring chaser. It’s just pathetic,” Parker said on The Odd Couple show. The former Lakers star hasn’t won a title since 2020, a dry spell extending nearly six years for a player considered capable of adapting to any roster.

Parker’s critique might hold weight given LeBron’s history of changing teams, even if he hasn’t moved around as much as other players who struggled to win championships. Still, given his stature, James is always going to face a harsher spotlight.

Danny Green weighs in

Adding to the criticism is Danny Green, who recently stated on NBA Courtside that a championship in Philadelphia wouldn’t elevate James to GOAT status. Green challenged the idea that James automatically turns any roster into a title favorite just by showing up.

Danny Green says if Lebron wins a championship with the 76ers as the 3rd Option or 4th Option it will NOT make him The GOAT 😭😭😭

(h/t @NBA__Courtside) pic.twitter.com/msSybpd6qD
— TheTruth (@TheTruth8240) July 24, 2026

Green argued that if James wins a title with Philadelphia as a third or fourth option, it shouldn’t count toward his historic GOAT debate with Michael Jordan. Even if he remains a prominent figure on the 76ers’ roster, taking a back seat behind other stars detracts from his overall legacy.

LeBron would still start and play heavy minutes, but he’d take a back seat on offense behind main stars like Embiid and Maxey. Instead of being the team’s primary scorer and decision-maker, he’d take fewer shots and focus on playmaking or spot-up shooting, meaning he wouldn’t be the main driver carrying the team to a ring.

How can LeBron be the primary option?

To remain a primary option, LeBron would need to stay on a team built specifically around him rather than joining a roster with established, prime superstars like Embiid. He’d have to keep commanding high ball-usage as the main floor general, taking control of late-game possessions to out-produce his teammates when games are on the line.

The 49ers could easily suffer the same fate in several areas as they did in 2025.

Eric Branch has covered the San Francisco 49ers for a long time and knows them inside and out. In one of his most recent analyses for the team’s upcoming season, he paints a grim picture, even daring to predict that Kyle Shanahan’s squad will miss the 2026 NFL playoffs.

Branch’s breakdown is lengthy, but it makes a few points crystal clear. For instance, he projects that several key players could combine to miss up to 25 NFL games, with Ricky Pearsall and Trent Williams among those sidelined.

When it comes to injuries, Branch also notes that Brock Purdy could once again miss time for San Francisco this year, specifically pointing to the quarterback’s ankle. Granted, that’s just a prediction on his part, not something that’s actively happening or guaranteed to happen, but given Purdy’s injury history, he seems to deal with something every season.

Branch’s predictions for the 49ers in 2026

Coach Yac on X took the time to list out all of Branch’s predictions. For those unfamiliar, Branch is a beat writer for the San Francisco Chronicle. While his takeaways can be read as a forecast of what might happen in 2026, they also look a lot like what has plagued the 49ers over the last two years. These aren’t wild takes; they’ve become a repeating pattern.

Branch’s predictions for the 49ers in 2026

• The 49ers over-reliance on aging 30-something players due to their series of lackluster recent drafts will catch up to them (and those NFL-record travel miles won’t help): They will finish 9-8, miss the playoffs and finish in third place in the NFC West behind the Rams and Seahawks

• The Brandon Aiyuk saga will somehow get more bizarre — and the former All-Pro wide receiver won’t play in the NFL in 2026

• Best value draft pick: Guard Carver Willis. DT Gracen Halton, a fellow fourth-rounder, will be a close runner-up

• Kittle will make his season debut in Week 2 after suffering a torn Achilles in January

• Purdy will miss two starts with a sprained AC joint. The lack of impact from the Niners’ 11-man 2025 draft class

• Notable players who won’t make the 53-man roster: WR Demarcus Robinson, LB Nick Martin, RB Isaac Guerendo, CB Darrell Luter Jr. and DE Sam Okuayinonu

• WR De’Zhaun Stribling will have 36 catches for 458 yards and 3 TDs this season

• McCaffrey, Pearsall, Evans, Trent Williams and Bosa will combine to miss at least 25 games

• Best free-agent signing: Evans. That bargain three-year contract he signed makes it easy for the 49ers to part ways after 2026. They won’t spend a second considering his release

• Worst free-agent signing: Linebacker Dre Greenlaw. His reunion after one season away is a feel-good story. His recent injury history? Bad news

Compiled by Coach Yac on X @coach_yac

One point Branch emphasizes, which might get lost amidst all the potential doom and gloom, is that recent draft classes haven’t made the deep impact expected. On that front, the coaching staff deserves far more blame than the players themselves for failing to properly utilize that talent.

Of course, it isn’t all bad news. The addition of Mike Evans has drawn plenty of optimism from Branch and other beat writers alike. Evans is seen as a bargain given his veteran experience, bringing precisely what San Francisco needs as it continues to chase an elusive Super Bowl ring.

The Mets were using tools to aid pitchers on the mound.

Adam Ottavino recently revealed that the New York Mets were secretly using an artificial intelligence program to help select their pitches during games. The veteran reliever shared that the organization leaned on advanced algorithms to shape their on field strategic decisions.

Ottavino explained that the Mets became the primary franchise targeted by Major League Baseball once regulators learned about the setup. According to details reported by The Athletic, teams were using league-issued dugout iPads to run custom generative AI tools.

The league uncovered that nearly a third of MLB teams were pushing technology guidelines by utilizing custom apps in dugouts. Front offices were feeding live game data into these models to instantly update their approach against opposing hitters.

MLB clamps down on dugout AI

Major League Baseball halted the practice mid-season by issuing a league-wide memo banning custom software, according to The Athletic. The commissioner’s office strictly prohibited any generative tools that offered live-updating recommendations for pitch-calling or substitutions. Moving forward, franchises are restricted to uploading static, pre-game analytical data subject to full league review.

Former Mets RP Adam Ottavino reveals the Mets used an AI program to pick their pitches 😳

"The Mets were the main team that got cracked down on it.
Clubs will struggle to bypass these new restrictions because dugout iPads remain locked down and strictly monitored by league software. Non-field personnel are forbidden from entering dugouts during games, preventing external staff from feeding live inputs into tablets. Unless rules are loosened in the future, teams cannot legally use generative AI for real-time strategic calls.

Despite all the controversy surrounding the tech, relying on algorithmic pitch selection didn’t actually help the Mets very much. The team still endured plenty of pitching struggles, proving that digital suggestions couldn’t magically fix execution on the mound.

George Kittle knows the most intimate details of what the drama between Aiyuk and the 49ers was.

George Kittle recently offered rare insight into the ongoing contract drama surrounding Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers. The veteran tight end claimed he understands everything happening behind closed doors regarding his teammate’s standing. Kittle revealed that while he knows the full truth, he chooses to keep specifics private.

Speaking candidly with host Chris Simms on NBC, Kittle made sure to defend the franchise’s efforts throughout the tough negotiations. He noted that the 49ers “have done a very good job throughout the entire process” as they navigated the complex standoff.

Reflecting on his decade with the organization, Kittle emphasized that he has received “nothing but respect and love” during his entire career in San Francisco. He deliberately refrained from calling out anyone involved, stating he never wants to “single out a player” or point fingers at anybody.

Balancing big contracts and 49ers’ championship hopes

The contract standoff stems from Aiyuk seeking a lucrative long-term extension that reflects his value among top NFL receivers. San Francisco faces a delicate financial puzzle as they try to keep their core roster intact under tight salary cap constraints. Both sides have weathered months of trade rumors.

George Kittle on the Brandon Aiyuk – 49ers situation:

“I feel like I know basically everything that’s happened and what’s going on and I can’t share all of that cause it’s not my business to share or tell, but I just want to let you know that I feel like the 49ers have done a… pic.twitter.com/pihdz8MEkb
— Coach Yac 🗣 (@Coach_Yac) July 24, 2026

Aiyuk’s leverage comes directly from his steady evolution into one of the most productive targets in the league. Since being drafted by the 49ers in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, he has recorded 294 receptions, 4,305 receiving yards, and 25 touchdowns.

His breakout 2023 campaign saw him post a career-high 1,342 receiving yards, cementing his status as a primary weapon in Shanahan’s offense. Resolving this saga remains crucial for the 49ers as they push for another championship run.

Kittle’s public backing of the front office highlights the trust existing veterans place in Lynch and Shanahan. Whether Aiyuk stays long-term or the situation evolves further, his teammates clearly respect both the player and the business side of the game.

It’s not over for Diego Pavia after being turned down by the Baltimore Ravens.

The road to the NFL is rarely smooth, and Diego Pavia learned that firsthand after being waived by the Baltimore Ravens before training camp even began. Getting cut early is a tough blow for any rookie fighting for a spot.

Instead of simply waiting around for another professional team to call, Pavia’s most intriguing play might actually be taking the NCAA back to court for one more year of college eligibility. Having already challenged junior-college eligibility restrictions in federal court, another antitrust lawsuit could open the door for an unexpected return to Saturdays.

Because he only received standard union per diems during his brief offseason stint in Baltimore, without a signing bonus or official game check, his legal team could argue he remains functionally eligible for collegiate play. Returning to college would be far from a step backward; thanks to NIL opportunities, a marquee college quarterback can command significantly more money than standard contracts in secondary professional leagues.

Staying in the pro loop or heading abroad

If Pavia chooses to bypass a legal fight with the NCAA, his most direct option is remaining patient on the NFL waiver wire or waiting for a team to sign him as a training camp arm. From a financial standpoint, he represents a zero-risk gamble for QB-needy teams.

Should an immediate NFL chance stall, he has plenty of alternative professional avenues eager to sign him. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers hold his CFL negotiating rights, the UFL offers a broadcast-friendly spring football platform, and even international options like Mexico’s Liga de Futbol Americano Profesional (LFA) offer immediate starting opportunities to keep his game film fresh.

Is Pavia an expensive option for an NFL team?

Because Pavia was an undrafted free agent (UDFA), any NFL team claiming him off waivers or signing him as a free agent will cost virtually the absolute minimum under the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement. His base salary could be $885,000 for the 2026 season.

The 49ers player specifically took to X to make it clear that he was more than happy about ESPN firing Ryan Clark.

Nick Bosa took to X with a pretty simple post, seemingly celebrating Ryan Clark getting fired. But according to reports, there’s a clear reason behind why Bosa made the post in the first place.

Bosa apparently wasn’t happy with comments made by Clark, the now-former ESPN analyst, back in 2024. Clark had called out Bosa, telling him to shut up and play. That seems to have been the trigger for Bosa being more than happy about Clark’s firing.

“I’m just waiting for all the people who comment under political and sports things to shut up and dribble or to shut up and play football, to tell him to shut up and rush,” Clark said on The Pivot back in October 2024.

Mixed reactions to Bosa’s post

Fans responding to Bosa’s post had mixed reactions. Some backed the 49ers pass rusher, while others criticized him, believing he was targeting the Black community by celebrating Clark’s firing. However, it’s worth remembering that Clark had previously called for critics to go after Bosa in 2024 after Bosa wore a MAGA hat during a teammate’s postgame interview.

“Hahahahahahahaha. I envy the roll out you get by just posting an ok symbol. People are nuts. They dont realize or care to realize the truth. They are so shallow all they can do is look at skin color and think that has to be it. Not realizing they are looking very shallow,” fan Chuck King wrote in reply to Bosa’s post.

To be clear, the actual reason ESPN fired Clark doesn’t have anything directly to do with Bosa or that 2024 drama. While ESPN hasn’t given an official reason, The Athletic reported his departure may have been due to his behavior during shows.

How long was Clark at ESPN, and what was his salary?

Ryan Clark worked at ESPN for 11 years, having originally joined the network in 2015 following his retirement from the NFL. At the time of his departure, his estimated salary was more than $2 million per year, a deal he negotiated in early 2024 that placed him among the network’s top-paid NFL analysts.

https://bolavip.com/en/world-cup/when-could-the-fifa-world-cup-return-to-the-united-states

Theoretically speaking, the United States could have another World Cup faster than expected.
Following a 32-year wait since 1994, the United States co-hosted the 2026 tournament alongside Canada and Mexico. Historically, no single nation has ever hosted two World Cup tournaments within a brief 12-year span. However, a growing theory suggests that soccer’s biggest spectacle could make a remarkably swift comeback on American soil by 2038.

According to Yahoo Sports, FIFA‘s strict continental rotation rules prohibit confederations from bidding if they hosted either of the previous two tournaments. With 2030 spanning Europe, Africa, and South America, and 2034 awarded to Saudi Arabia, four major continental confederations are immediately sidelined for 2038. That leaves only CONCACAF and Oceania eligible, positioning the American nation as the primary candidate for what might become a 64-team event.

Andrew Joseph of USA Today highlighted how this theoretical pathway virtually guarantees a strong bid, since Oceania lacks the necessary infrastructure. With Australia competing under the Asian confederation, New Zealand simply cannot supply the required stadium capacities for a global competition.

Political pressure and FIFA’s financial engine

President Donald Trump told FOX Sports reporter Jenny Taft that the country would be requesting hosting rights again immediately. Speaking at Trump Tower on July 17, Trump even mentioned that Gianni Infantino had suggested co-hosting with China, though Trump insisted on hosting alone and leaving Canada and Mexico out.

President Trump spoke with @JennyTaft ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final@realDonaldTrump pic.twitter.com/Wk463lj1wU
— FOX Sports (@FOXSports) July 19, 2026

The financial incentive behind another North American tournament makes the ambitious bid equally attractive for the governing body. Entrepreneur and investor Joe Pompliano noted on X that FIFA is making so much money that another hosting stint in 2038 is highly likely. As Pompliano pointed out, all observers have to do is follow the money.

Built-in venues and world-class infrastructure

Unlike most global hosts, the United States does not need to spend tens of billions constructing brand-new athletic venues from scratch. Existing NFL stadiums and multi-purpose arenas already offer state-of-the-art facilities across the entire nation.

American host cities boast incredible open-air and retractable-roof stadiums featuring massive seating capacities and modern fan amenities. Furthermore, major urban hubs are already seamlessly designed around these mega-structures to support high-density traffic and global tourism.

NFL players are joining forces to demand natural grass after seeing soccer stars thrive on real turf with almost no injuries during the World Cup.
Now that the 2026 World Cup has come to a close, several NFL players are calling for stadiums to keep their natural grass fields instead of reverting back to turf, arguing that real grass helps prevent injuries. However, neither the league nor the owners have made any official announcements regarding a permanent switch.

George Kittle made his voice heard on X, posting: “Grass looks great at MetLife! Can we keep it that way @NFL?? Would appreciate it thanks.” Still, that’s just a suggestion, as the league itself doesn’t directly make field-surface decisions, the team owners who manage the stadiums do.

Jonathan Taylor also weighed in, saying that maintaining natural grass in every stadium isn’t an impossible ask, especially if it keeps NFL players healthier throughout the season. Even Caleb Williams posted a photo asking why the NFL couldn’t have the same setup.

Plenty of people voiced support for real grass in the NFL

It wasn’t just the players pushing for real grass, either. Analysts, podcasters, and media personalities like Pat McAfee and Mike Florio quickly joined the chorus, using their massive platforms to amplify player concerns and spark a wider debate across sports talk radio and social media.

I like this grass movement we’re seeing from the NFL players.. I love this initiative #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/XGVmUM8i37
— Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) July 20, 2026

“It’s now a collective bargaining issue. 92% of the players can say we prefer grass. Well, at least 50.1% have to prioritize grass when it’s time to negotiate with the league. What are you willing to give up to get grass fields across the league?” Florio noted during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show.

What’s holding the NFL back from using natural grass everywhere?

Mainly, cost and climate. Keeping natural grass alive year-round isn’t feasible in every market, harsh winter weather in northern cities would simply kill it. Dome stadiums present another hurdle, as keeping the roof open daily for sunlight isn’t always practical, meaning teams would need to invest heavily in specialized grow lights and ongoing field maintenance.

Image from Underdog on X.

At the end of the day, the decision rests with team owners who manage stadium operations. Take Gillette Stadium, for instance: the natural grass installed for the World Cup was already completely ripped up by July 12 to make way for artificial turf again.

How many NFL stadiums actually use natural grass?

Currently, 14 NFL stadiums feature 100% natural grass. Two additional venues use a hybrid system, combining real grass with synthetic fibers, bringing the total to 16. The Philadelphia Eagles use a hybrid surface called GrassMaster, and the Green Bay Packers use a similar setup.

The Eagles and Packers both host outdoor games, just like every other team with a natural grass field. Interestingly, several open-air stadiums still use artificial turf, making them the most realistic candidates for a potential switch to real grass in the future.

Once again, Lionel Messi and Argentina find themselves as targets of harsh criticism after losing the 2026 World Cup to Spain.
Lionel Messi and Argentina continue to draw sharp criticism for what went down during their 2026 World Cup final match against Spain. One of the latest critics to chime in is Jeff Powell, who labeled the Albiceleste “brutes.”

Powell, a veteran columnist for the Daily Mail who has covered over 10 World Cups, penned a lengthy piece blasting the Argentine players’ performance against Spain. He called them the “ugliest losers in World Cup history” following a barrage of fouls and a viral post-match brawl.

Powell didn’t stop there. He added that Pele, who passed away in 2022, was at least spared from having to watch Argentina win another World Cup from beyond the grave. Even worse, Pele didn’t have to watch them drag the game to a penalty shootout after offering almost nothing on the field against a Spanish side led by Rodri, who ultimately took home the Golden Ball over Messi.

Powell regrets admiring Messi

Powell, who went so far as to call Messi an “imposter,” admitted he regrets previously naming Messi as one of his favorite players, chalking it up to human error. It is worth noting that another prominent English journalist, Piers Morgan, also ripped into Argentina’s Leandro Paredes after the loss to Spain.

Lionel Messi before the FIFA World Cup 2026 Quarter Final match (Getty Images)

One of the central points in Powell’s column, and his critique of Messi specifically, is his belief that Argentina’s No. 10 should have spoken up and apologized for his teammates’ behavior after the final whistle. That post-game brawl is now expected to draw FIFA sanctions.

Despite criticism, Powell keeps Messi in his All-Time XI

While Powell called the actions of Messi and his teammates disgraceful, he still includes Messi in his all-time XI, even if the admiration has faded. He places Messi in the midfield alongside Johan Cruyff, Alfredo Di Stefano, and Diego Maradona.

Image made based on Jeff Powell’s all-time XI posted on Daily Mail.

In addition to his all-time XI, Powell still considers Messi (who scored 8 goals in the 2026 World Cup but missed out on the Golden Boot) one of the top 10 players in soccer history, ranking him sixth, just behind Di Stefano and ahead of Ferenc Puskas.

Rank

Player

Country

1

Pele

Brazil

2

Diego Maradona

Argentina

3

Garrincha

Brazil

4

Johan Cruyff

Netherlands

5

Alfredo Di Stefano

Spain

6

Lionel Messi

Argentina

7

Ferenc Puskas

Hungary

8

Cristiano Ronaldo

Portugal

9

John Charles

Wales

10

George Best

Northern Ireland

Jeff Powell’s Top 10 soccer players

Looking beyond Argentina, Powell warned that European and South American powers need to watch out for African nations like Cape Verde, arguing they are steadily closing in on a World Cup title. He noted that Caribbean teams are also making strides to push deeper into future tournaments.

French players dominate the latest Power Rankings update, leaving Lionel Messi slightly behind.
Lionel Messi slipped slightly in FIFA’s latest Power Rankings following the 2026 World Cup. Michael Olise topped the Argentine star in creativity, while Kylian Mbappe took the number one spot in attacking metrics.

FIFA takes these rankings seriously. Up first are the attacking stats, where Mbappé posted a 9.12 rating and snagged the Golden Boot, even without playing in the World Cup Final. Messi finished third in those standings, trailing Jude Bellingham.

Creativity is another key category in the rankings. Olise grabbed top honors with an 8.29 rating, edging out Messi’s 8.26. The top 10 is dominated by French, Spanish, and English players, alongside Jeremy Doku and Mexico‘s Roberto Alvarado sitting at number 10.

The post-world cup FIFA power rankings

Messi’s overall position isn’t bad for a veteran nearing retirement. Players like Bellingham surpassed him in attacking thanks to strong tournament runs; England playing in the third-place match gave Bellingham an extra game to pad his numbers.

Messi and Bellingham during the 2026 World Cup (Getty Images)

What pushed Olise to the top spot in creativity was his assist total, helping propel France through the bracket. He racked up seven assists during the World Cup, placing him ahead of both Messi and Mbappe.

Rank

Creativity Rankings

Score

#1

Michael Olise

8.29

#2

Lionel Messi

8.26

#3

Kylian Mbappé

7.84

#4

Jeremy Doku

7.64

#5

Lamine Yamal

7.47

#6

Anthony Gordon

7.42

#7

Marcus Rashford

7.28

#8

Alex Baena

7.14

#9

Dani Olmo

7.14

#10

Roberto Alvarado

7.14

FIFA.com Data

Rodri also deserves a nod. He isn’t a flashy attacker like Messi or Mbappe, but he was vital to Spain’s backline alongside four of his teammates. He leads the defensive rankings with an 8.23 rating, with Pau Cubarsi, Pedro Porro, and Aymeric Laporte joining him in the top four.

Rank

Defense Rankings

Score

#1

Rodri

8.23

#2

Pau Cubarsí

7.60

#3

Pedro Porro

7.59

#4

Aymeric Laporte

7.14

#5

Luc de Fougerolles

7.11

#6

Cristian Romero

7.08

#7

Pedri

6.96

#8

Davinson Sánchez

6.89

#9

Dayot Upamecano

6.83

#10

Aurélien Tchouaméni

6.81

FIFA.com Data

While fans use post-World Cup FIFA power rankings for debate, the industry views them as a data-driven snapshot of tournament performance. Beyond individual prestige, a standout placement in these rankings can directly influence a player’s transfer value, contract negotiations, and career trajectory.

Piers Morgan rips into Leandro Paredes and all of his teammates.
Leandro Paredes has faced a wave of criticism following the fouls he committed during the 2026 World Cup final against Spain, which Argentina ultimately lost. One of his recent harshest critics was Piers Morgan.

On his show Sports Uncensored, Morgan called Paredes a “little rat” while trying to single out the absolute worst performer of the World Cup final. He took aim at the Argentine midfielder alongside Simon Jordan and John Terry, who simply laughed as he spoke.

It was obvious Paredes was going to draw heavy fire, especially after his post-match clash with Spain’s players while they were celebrating on the pitch. The footage went viral worldwide, and FIFA announced it would be looking into the incident.

Morgan also targets Gianni Infantino

FIFA President Gianni Infantino was another target of Morgan’s wrath, landing on the host’s list of the worst figures at the 2026 World Cup. Infantino also became a magnet for memes and heavy criticism online over claims that FIFA showed favoritism toward Argentina.

🐀🇦🇷 “[Paredes] is a little RAT!”

🤬 “Infantino is the biggest PR*CK!”

Piers Morgan, Simon Jordan and John Terry discuss who the ‘biggest pr*ck’ of the World Cup was.

📺 https://t.co/Y27yceQgkD@piersmorgan | @Sjopinion10 | @JohnTerry26 pic.twitter.com/ruvS9WjfDn
— Sports Uncensored (@SportsUncensrd) July 20, 2026

Calling Infantino “the biggest pr—“ was a direct shot at the head of global soccer. Time will tell if the FIFA boss takes any action against Morgan, who is notoriously ruthless in his commentary, not just about the World Cup, but about players and the transfer market as a whole.

Morgan relished Argentina’s loss to Spain

Beyond calling Paredes a rat, Morgan slammed the team’s behavior as completely out of line, calling it “the most disgusting thing I’ve seen in World Cup history!” Simon Jordan chimed in as well, adding, “I don’t have any empathy [for Argentina].”

Richarlison was one of the people who genuinely celebrated after Ferran Torres scored to beat Argentina, acting as if he were Spanish himself.
Richarlison’s reaction was among the most viral moments after Ferran Torres scored to lift Spain over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup. His reaction could easily be seen as a dig at the Argentine players.

Richarlison can be seen celebrating Torres’ goal as if he were a die-hard Spain fan. After the goal, he slid across his hardwood floor at home as if he were on a pitch with his team.

It is worth noting that Richarlison didn’t play for Brazil in the 2026 World Cup. His absence was due to inconsistent playing time in the Premier League and a tactical decision by Carlo Ancelotti.

A provocative move against Argentina?

While Richarlison’s celebration racked up around 127,000 likes, 2,200 comments, and 3 million views, it could definitely be viewed as a provocation toward Argentina and its players, several of whom play in the Premier League.

Richarlison after Ferran Torres’ goal. 🇧🇷 pic.twitter.com/86kifoqeFS
— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) July 20, 2026

Among the Argentine players who might be annoyed by the celebration are Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister, Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, and Aston Villa’s Dibu Martinez.

But the one most likely to call him out if he takes offense is Cristian “Cuti” Romero, Richarlison’s Tottenham teammate. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see how the Argentine players react.

The last time Richarlison played in a World Cup was Qatar 2022. He scored a massive goal there, but his celebration was much tamer, he didn’t slide across the floor like he just did at home during the 2026 final.

Dani Olmo decided not to hold back when asked about the actions of the Argentina players, though he stopped short of harshly criticizing them after the 2026 World Cup final.
Dani Olmo, a key playmaker for Spain during the 2026 World Cup, wasn’t thrilled with how some Argentina players turned their backs on Spain during the podium trophy celebration, especially since the Spanish squad had just given the Albiceleste a guard of honor.

Olmo responded to a Mundo Deportivo reporter: “Well… it doesn’t matter to us in the end. I think it’s also important to think about the values you want to convey to the outside. We are role models for many generations, and for many children, and I think they should also be role models in everything and for the better.”

Olmo’s calm response echoed the composure shown by other Spanish players during the tournament. It also mirrored Rodri’s recent comments about how his big World Cup comeback could serve as an inspiration for younger players.

Olmo wants Spain to set the example

Olmo, who featured in eight matches during the 2026 World Cup and faced Argentina firsthand, didn’t just focus on the Argentine players’ gesture. He emphasized that he wants Spain to be a prime example of how to treat an opponent, always with respect.

Dani Olmo explains how Spain wanted to set an ‘example for the next generation’ with how they played and conducted themselves at the World Cup 🏆 pic.twitter.com/7ri7xwK6IN
— Sky Sports Football (@SkyFootball) July 20, 2026

Despite Olmo’s emphasis on respect, it’s worth noting that Spain committed 21 fouls during the match against Argentina, while Argentina committed 24. However, the Spanish side didn’t receive a single yellow card, compared to the five handed out to the Argentines.

Olmo went the entire World Cup without picking up a single yellow. His two assists were among his biggest highlights of the tournament, helping anchor Spain’s run. During the final, he committed just one foul and drew two, capping off a remarkably clean performance.

Rodri wants his story to help other players during their darkest moments.
Rodri, widely considered one of Spain’s biggest heroes in their 2026 World Cup victory over Argentina, hopes his journey inspires other players struggling with severe injuries.

“I hope my story will be taken by young players as an example: even when your career goes down, you can always come back,” Rodri said after the final. His message highlights that it is entirely possible to return to the highest level of the game, regardless of how devastating an injury might seem.

The midfielder, who also took home the Golden Ball as the 2026 World Cup’s best player, tore his ACL back in 2024. While he recovered, his form initially dipped. However, he fought his way back to peak condition just in time to lead Spain on the world stage.

The engine behind Spain’s championship run

Rodri’s impact wasn’t just felt through his words; his younger teammates deeply recognized his leadership on the pitch. Spanish defender Marc Cucurella echoed this sentiment perfectly.

I asked Marc Cucurella after the World Cup final just what exactly Rodri means to #Spain

He made it clear the Man City star makes everything hum for the champions.

“He controls everything.
“He controls everything. He organizes the team, he decides when we press, he decides when we attack,” Cucurella said. His praise underscores how Rodri directed the squad, guiding the younger players as they picked apart Argentina‘s defense.

Will Rodri suit up for Spain in 2030?

By the time the 2030 World Cup kicks off, Rodri will be 33, turning 34 on June 22 during the tournament. Given his role as the team’s indispensable midfield anchor, it is highly likely he will still be a crucial part of Spain’s roster in 2030.

In a defiant message, Nico Paz sends words of encouragement to fans, letting them know that Argentina is more alive than ever in the fight for the World Cup.
Nico Paz sent a clear message after losing the 2026 World Cup final to Spain, making it obvious he will do everything possible to bring the trophy back to Argentina. It was a defiant statement to anyone facing the Albiceleste in the next tournament.

“I promise to give absolutely everything I have to bring this cup back to Argentina,” the second part of Paz’s message read. It is clear that after falling short of the title, he is determined to push himself to get back to the tournament and win it.

However, his message wasn’t just a rallying cry for Argentina and its fans; it also showed respect for Spain, a country celebrating another World Cup title. In the third part of his post, he congratulated the Spanish team on their victory.

Nico Paz’s full message

Before vowing to give everything to win the next World Cup, Paz started his message with words of pride to help lift spirits following the 1-0 loss to Spain, refusing to let a heartbreaking defeat overshadow the team’s incredible run.

Nico Paz and Lionel Messi of Argentina.

“Today more than ever, I am proud to represent this country, this national team, and to be part of an incredible group of people who would die for these colors and leave their heart and soul out there at all times. All I can say is thank you. I promise to give absolutely everything I have to bring this cup back to Argentina. Congratulations to Spain and to all Spanish fans. Always with Argentina, throughthe good times and the bad!”

Paz received massive support from his followers on Instagram (@nicopaz1o), where he posted the message. At the time of writing, the post had already surpassed 500,000 likes and around 12,000 comments backing the Argentine player.

How old will Paz be for the next World Cup?

Nico Paz will be 25 years old for the 2030 World Cup. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi will be nearly 20 years his senior by the time the next tournament rolls around, the same tournament where Paz is determined to do whatever it takes to win the trophy for Argentina.

The rings for the fans are not cheap, but they will be available in a large quantity.
Fans of the 2026 World Cup will have the opportunity to own an official replica of the rings that will be awarded to the players of Spain, who won the tournament. It will be a highly desired and collectible item for soccer lovers.

Initially, FIFA announced that 2,026 rings will be manufactured, this has already been confirmed. Out of that total, 1,996 rings will be available for fans to purchase anywhere in the world. The medals are another valuable item the champions will receive, but they will not be available to fans.

The rings can be purchased on a website called championsring2026.com, which is officially licensed by FIFA to sell these rings. They are manufactured in Switzerland and feature details from the championship, such as the trophy. Although they do not have the name “Spain” on them, they will feature the crest of the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

How much does a FIFA World Cup champions ring cost for fans?

The price of the ring is $12,000, which is quite a high amount for an official replica. However, for some fans, it will surely be worth it. This sets the price on par with rings from other tournaments, such as the NFL’s Super Bowl, which typically has expensive rings for fans.

2026 World Cup ring view (FIFA/championsring2026.com)

These rings hold a value that goes beyond the monetary, as this is the first World Cup where rings are awarded to the winners, in this case, to Spain as tournament champions. Furthermore, for some fans, it could be an investment, since they could potentially sell it for more money in the long run.

If we calculate the total sales for the 1,996 rings, we are talking about $23,952,000. This is a quite significant amount that will serve as an additional revenue stream for FIFA from the tournament, though the Swiss manufacturer will obviously keep a share of the sales.

Will rings be awarded again in the next World Cup?

Yes, it is highly likely that rings will be awarded again, just like other awards such as the Golden Ball, which in 2026 was won by a Spanish player for the first time in history. Additionally, it is likely that other awards will be included if FIFA deems it appropriate for future editions of the tournament.

Lionel Messi won't be as old as some people think for the 2030 World Cup.
Lionel Messi could be playing in his final World Cup as he preps for the 2026 final against Spain. However, it’s still up in the air whether he’ll suit up again in 2030 with Argentina, when he will be 42 years old.

The 2030 World Cup is scheduled to kick off on June 8. While Messi will be 42 at the start of the tournament, he’ll actually turn 43 during the event on June 24. Whether he takes the pitch is a decision only he can make.

If Messi manages to play in 2030, it would undoubtedly be a massive personal milestone for him and a historic moment for Argentina. However, it still wouldn’t make him the oldest player in World Cup history, that title belongs to someone else.

Who is the oldest player to ever appear in a World Cup?

That honor goes to Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary, who set a record in 2018 that will be incredibly tough to break at 45 years and 161 days old. Messi would come close, sitting just two years shy of the record.

Messi and El-Hadary (Getty Images, Collage by Gemini AI)

During the 2026 World Cup, it was already clear that Messi’s role wasn’t as physically dominant as it was back in 2022. Even so, he remained a clinical playmaker who came through when Argentina needed him, racking up a solid goal tally along the way.

What happens if Messi retires before 2030?

Argentina would have to find a replacement for his role, a creative, dynamic playmaker capable of drawing opposing defenders out of position. It’s highly unlikely they’ll find another Messi in just a four-year span, but they do have a talented pool of young attacking options ready to step up.

Two people will be presenting the trophy to the World Cup champions.
The 2026 World Cup final will feature a slightly different protocol, as Gianni Infantino is set to hand over the trophy alongside Donald Trump. The move had been rumored for a while and has now been confirmed by multiple outlets.

By June 23, it was practically an open secret that Trump and Infantino would share the podium. An ESPN article by Mark Ogden later confirmed that the US President will indeed join the FIFA president for the presentation.

This marks a departure from the last two World Cups, where Infantino handed over the trophy solo in both Qatar 2022 and Russia 2018. Trump is also expected to help hand out the gold medals to the tournament winners.

Have Trump and Infantino presented an award together before?

Presenting the World Cup trophy won’t be the first time Infantino and Trump have shared the stage at a FIFA event. The President previously appeared at the FIFA Club World Cup, helping Infantino present the trophy to the champions.

Trump and Infantino before the World Cup (Getty Images)

Involving an outside figure in the trophy presentation is a new look for FIFA. On top of that, players will also receive championship rings at the 2026 final, making for two major protocol changes in a single night.

Other heads of state have also handed out the World Cup trophy

While unusual recently, this isn’t the first time a world leader has stepped up. King Juan Carlos I did it in Spain back in 1982. Then in 1986, Mexican President Miguel de la Madrid personally handed the trophy to Diego Maradona after Argentina won the final.

The trophy for the World Cup's best player holds a sentimental value that goes far beyond any monetary worth.
FIFA hands out several player awards, including the Golden Ball for the tournament’s best player. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with any prize money, it holds strictly sentimental value for the players.

Because the Golden Ball lacks a cash payout, its actual worth depends on the player who wins it. Down the road, they could always auction it off, similar to what some players have done with their World Cup winner’s medals.

The Golden Ball proves a player had an incredible tournament, which naturally boosts their market value. On top of that, World Cup champions also receive a ring from FIFA.

When was the first World Cup Golden Ball awarded?

The award was first introduced in 1982 and is officially known for commercial purposes as the Adidas Golden Ball. Out of the 11 players who have won it, Italy’s Paolo Rossi was the very first.

Messi with the Golden Ball and World Cup in 2022

Lionel Messi is currently the only player to win the Golden Ball twice, though not back-to-back. He never received a dime in prize money for either, and FIFA doesn’t pay out cash for the Silver or Bronze Balls either.

Neither the medals nor the rings given to World Cup champions include a cash prize. They are strictly trophies and symbols to recognize them for winning FIFA’s ultimate tournament.

All the details about the World Cup trophy, one of the most coveted prizes in the world for any national team.
The FIFA World Cup trophy is undoubtedly the most coveted prize for any national team. It’s not just about the prestige, either; the trophy itself is worth over $20 million due to the sheer amount of gold it contains.

The original World Cup trophy is made of solid 18-karat gold, making it the most valuable prize in global sports, easily outpacing other major tournaments that offer flashy but far less expensive trophies.

Aside from the trophy, which is already incredibly valuable because of all its gold, the players also receive a gold medal for winning the World Cup. However, the trophy is undoubtedly what the players cherish most when they win the tournament.

Do World Cup winners keep the trophy or do they have to return it?

No, World Cup winners do not get to keep the original trophy. In addition to receiving a winner’s medal, they are given a bronze-plated replica to take back home. This replica is used for celebrations with fans and goes on display at their respective national federation’s headquarters.

Infographic made with Gemini AI

To date, Brazil is the only team that has been allowed to keep an original solid gold trophy, a privilege earned after winning their third title in 1970. Reflecting just how valuable this history is, a single winner’s medal from that legendary 1970 tournament recently sold for half a million dollars.

How much does the trophy weigh and measure?

The original solid gold trophy weighs 13.2 pounds (6 kg), which is over 1,200% heavier than an official size 5 World Cup match ball. The replica trophy, of course, weighs much less since it lacks the solid gold composition of the original.

Standing 14.5 inches (36.8 cm) tall, it is a fairly standard size for an international sports trophy. However, it is about 2.3 inches (6 cm) taller than the original Jules Rimet trophy, which stood at just under 12 inches (30 cm).

Hidden details on the trophy’s base

The two green bands visible on the base of the trophy are made of malachite, a mineral that typically holds a commercial value of $2 to $5 per carat. One detail hidden from plain sight is the gold plate on the very bottom of the base. Measuring about 5 inches (13 cm) in diameter, this plate is engraved with the names of every winning nation since 1974.

World Cup winners' medals can be worth far more than people actually think.
Beyond the sentimental value a 2026 FIFA World Cup medal holds for a player, it also carries significant commercial worth. Thanks to its gold plating, the raw material alone is highly valuable.

While there is no official price tag for a World Cup winner’s medal, some have reportedly fetched up to $70,000 at auction. This suggests the actual manufacturing cost is likely around half of that amount.

Of course, the player who owns the medal adds the real premium. The story behind it matters immensely, especially since World Cup winner’s medals are well known to not be 100% solid gold.

Can players sell their medals?

Players have every right to sell their medals in the future if they choose to, especially if they ever face financial hardship. A World Cup champion’s medal is highly coveted by collectors and wealthy fans who love owning a piece of sports history.

A look at Angel Di Maria’s World Cup gold medal after Qatar 2022.

For example, Pelé’s 1958 World Cup medal was auctioned off for $255,000, making it one of the most expensive ever sold. However, Pelé broke his own record when his 1970 medal sold for nearly half a million dollars, securing a Guinness World Record.

FIFA has no rules prohibiting players from selling their medals down the road. Once they win the World Cup, that piece of hardware belongs 100% to them. The same goes for the championship ring they will receive for winning the tournament, a brand-new tradition for FIFA events.

The iconic FIFA World Cup winners' medals aren't quite what they seem, despite containing gold.
The 2026 World Cup winners will receive gold medals. Some fans have wondered if these medals are 100% solid gold, but they actually aren’t. They are gold-plated, which increases both their sentimental and commercial value.

This gold plating makes them incredibly valuable. Each medal weighs about 500 grams (around 1.1 pounds) and features unique details that set them apart from medals in other FIFA tournaments and global sports.

Just like the winners, the team that loses the final also gets a medal. While it isn’t gold, it’s still highly valuable. But fans are mostly curious about the gold medals. Even though they aren’t solid gold, the World Cup winner medal value can skyrocket later on depending on who they belonged to.

Have medals always been handed out to World Cup winners?

Medals for the winners have always been a part of FIFA history. Unlike the rings that will be given to the winners this year, medals aren’t a new addition; they’ve been around since the very first tournament in 1930.

French players with Gold Medals in 2018 (Getty Images)

However, from 1930 to 1974, only 11 players on the field received a winner’s medal. Bench players and the head coach were left out, though that changed years later. It meant that legendary squad depth and tactical masterminds behind the scenes went completely unrecognized on the podium.

It was during the 1978 World Cup in Argentina when FIFA decided to start giving gold medals to all the winners. This included not just the players on the field, but also the active roster on the bench and the entire coaching staff.

FIFA constantly wants to add new things for World Cup winners.
FIFA is officially introducing customized championship rings for the winners of the 2026 World Cup. For the first time in the tournament’s 96-year history, the victorious players will receive these unique pieces of jewelry alongside the iconic golden trophy and traditional medals.

The governing body has commissioned a limited collection of exactly 2,026 individually numbered pieces to commemorate the tournament year. The winning squad and coaching staff will receive 30 bespoke rings customized with their national identity, while the remaining 1,996 pieces will go on sale to public collectors.

While this jewelry adds an exciting twist to the tournament podium, individual awards still hold immense prestige on the global stage. The golden ball is another separate award as valuable as a ring that few players get, highlighting the pinnacle of tournament performance. This weekend, either Spain or Argentina will walk away with the ultimate prize and the inaugural set of the newest accessory.

What is the price tag on World Cup ring?

While FIFA has not yet released the official retail price for the public pieces, sports memorabilia experts expect these items to carry a massive financial valuation. Standard championship rings in North American sports often range anywhere from $20,000 to over $40,000 depending on the diamond carat weight and gold purity.

Image from FIFA.com

For the 1,996 licensed replicas available to fans, the cost will heavily depend on the materials FIFA chooses for production. High-end collector editions could easily fetch several thousand dollars, especially with an official certificate of authenticity included.

Adapting to the North American sporting era

The timing of this historic introduction is entirely deliberate, as hosting the tournament across the United States, Mexico, and Canada presents the perfect cultural backdrop. Championship rings are a deeply rooted tradition in the NFL, NBA, and MLB, but they have never existed on soccer’s international stage. FIFA is clearly leaning into this established North American sporting custom to give the tournament a distinctly local flavor.

A total of 12 players have won the Golden Ball since the award was first introduced in 1982.
Lionel Messi holds the distinction of being the only player to win multiple Golden Balls in FIFA World Cup history. The Argentine star first claimed the tournament’s top individual honor back in 2014 before repeating the feat in 2022.

In 1982, Italian striker Paolo Rossi took home the inaugural prize, followed by Diego Maradona’s top performance in 1986. Subsequent tournaments saw masters of the game like Salvatore Schillaci, Romario, and the phenomenal Ronaldo capture the prestigious individual trophy.

The turn of the century introduced a diverse list of elite talent showcasing their skills under intense pressure. Defying standard trends, German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn secured the honor in 2002, preceding displays by Zinedine Zidane and Diego Forlan.

The table of the Golden Ball winners

Argentina stands alone as the most successful nation in this category, boasting three total titles from two legendary figures. Messi’s double victories combined with Maradona’s unforgettable mid-eighties masterclass give the South American powerhouse an unmatched historical advantage.

Brazil and Italy remain firmly tied in the second position, each having produced two unique award winners. The Italian duo of Rossi and Schillaci brought immense pride to their nation during successive tournaments in the eighties and nineties.

Only one match in all of FIFA World Cup history saw two national teams score a combined total of 9 goals.
The clash on 18 July 2026 now holds the prestigious title of the highest-scoring third-place game in FIFA World Cup history. England and France went head-to-head in a breathtaking offensive showcase. When the final whistle blew, a staggering total of 10 goals had been scored.

The Three Lions dominated the pitch during this historic encounter, ultimately defeating their rivals by a remarkable scoreline of England 6-4 France. Despite being the new highest-scoring third-place match, it was not the biggest margin of victory a national team has achieved in World Cup history.

This historic game took place at a packed Hard Rock Stadium (Miami Stadium), where a confirmed sellout crowd of 64,478 fans witnessed the drama unfold. This massive turnout highlights just how much the tournament has grown compared to older eras, easily clearing the modern standard of 60,000 fans per game.

Goodbye to the 1958 third-place match

The thrilling 2026 encounter officially surpassed by one single goal the previous record set during the 1958 World Cup, where France defeated West Germany 6-3 in a spectacular 9-goal thriller.

ABSOLUTE MADNESS IN MIAMI AS JUDE BELLINGHAM PUTS ENGLAND UP 6-4 TO SEAL THE BRONZE MEDAL 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 pic.twitter.com/2hMBGTzE8d
— FOX Sports (@FOXSports) July 18, 2026

That match was famously headlined by the legendary Just Fontaine, who spearheaded the French attack by scoring 4 goals. The new 10-goal battle between England and France now stands alone at the top of the tournament’s history books.

Other high-scoring third-place thrillers

Long before France and England shattered the record, the 1938 tournament witnessed Brazil defeat Sweden 4-2 in a brilliant offensive display. That six-goal thriller was the first top scoring third-place match before france-west germany took the first spot twenty years later. Even earlier, the 1934 edition featured a thrilling 3-2 victory for Germany over Austria, setting an early standard for high-scoring consolation finals.

The modern era has also delivered its fair share of dramatic, high-scoring matches. A prime example occurred in 1986 when France defeated Belgium 4-2, earning a memorable spot among the thrilling extra time third place matches in world cup history.

Additionally, Sweden showcased its attacking prowess in 1994 by dismantling a surprising Bulgaria team with a commanding 4-0 victory. The twenty-first century has kept this entertaining tradition alive with fast-paced, high-scoring games that thrilled soccer audiences tuning in.

Tomas Brolin of Sweden (Getty Images)

In 2002, fans witnessed a lightning-fast start as South Korea fell 2-3 against Turkiye in a match featuring the fastest goal ever. Keeping up the momentum, the 2010 tournament saw Uruguay vs 2-3 Germany in a spectacular, rainy blockbuster that kept viewers guessing until the last second.

In a third-place game, there was a national team that scored 4 goals and didn't allow any; it was the biggest win for the bronze medal.
The World Cup third-place match is usually filled with high-scoring games. During the 1994 World Cup hosted by the United States, a rampant Sweden squad completely dismantled Bulgaria to claim the podium spot. This memorable encounter finished with a lopsided 4-0 scoreline.

The historic onslaught took place at the iconic Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena. Tomas Brolin opened the scoring early on, followed shortly by a strike from Hakan Mild to double the cushion. The third blow arrived courtesy of the legendary Henrik Larsson.

Bulgaria simply had no tactical answer for the relentless pressure, and unlike the rare times third-place games went to extra time or penalties in World Cup history, this one was decided early. Kennet Andersson rose highest to head home the fourth and final goal of the afternoon, sealing a legendary performance.

How many third-Place matches ended with one team not scoring?

Throughout tournament history, there have been exactly six instances where a team failed to find the back of the net. The earliest occurrence of a one-sided clean sheet came in 1962 when host nation Chile managed a narrow 1-0 victory over Yugoslavia.

This defensive trend continued in the following decade, starting with West Germany securing a tight 1-0 victory against Uruguay in 1970. Just four years later at the 1974 tournament, Poland duplicated that exact 1-0 result by shutting out a powerful Brazil squad.

The pattern then skipped ahead to the famous 1994 Swedish demolition of Bulgaria, the Netherlands blanking Brazil 3-0 in 2014, and Belgium defeating England 2-0 in 2018.

Tight third place encounters in the Modern Era

Since the 2014 tournament in Brazil, no single country has managed to win the third-place playoff by more than a two-goal margin. Teams are treating the final podium spot with immense respect, resulting in highly disciplined tactical chess matches rather than lopsided blowouts.

Out of 22 third-place matches played in World Cup history, less than 5% ended in extra time or penalties.
The history of the FIFA World Cup is packed with dramatic knockout fixtures, yet the third-place playoff stands out as a unique anomaly when it comes to extra time. Across nearly a century of tournament history, football fans have never witnessed a single bronze medal match get decided by a penalty shootout.

Unlike World Cup finals, several of which have gone to extra time or penalties, third-place games almost always wrap up in 90 minutes. In fact, only one solitary third-place match in the entire history of the tournament has ever extended past regulation time. That historic exception took place during the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

During that memorable 1986 consolation final, France clashed with Belgium in a high-scoring encounter that ended 2-2 in normal time. The French squad found their second wind during the thirty additional minutes, scoring twice to secure a 4-2 victory and the bronze medal.

Why do third place matches rarely go extra time?

The primary reason these matches rarely require extra time or penalties lies in the liberating tactical nature of the fixture itself. Unlike the high-stakes pressure of a World Cup final or a semifinal, the third-place game carries far less defensive anxiety for the competing nations. Teams tend to play with a much more open, attacking philosophy, which naturally prevents low-scoring tactical deadlocks.

With squads frequently rotating their starting lineups to give reserve players a chance on the world stage, defensive structures are inherently looser. This lack of conservative caution routinely results in a high volume of goals being scored during standard regulation time.

The anomalies of 1930 and 1950

During the inaugural 1930 World Cup in Uruguay, the tournament completely omitted a third-place playoff match from the schedule. The United States was later awarded third place strictly based on their superior overall statistical record during the tournament.

Two decades later, the 1950 World Cup in Brazil threw out the traditional knockout format entirely in favor of a final round-robin group phase. While this meant there was no single, standalone third-place match scheduled, the final set of fixtures naturally sorted the standings.

A veteran of two World Cups, Slavko Vincic is typically a referee who keeps his cards in his pocket, maintaining a low booking average in this tournament.
Veteran referee Slavko Vincic will officiate the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain. While he averages 4.15 yellow cards per game over his career, his numbers in FIFA’s flagship tournament run a bit lower.

Vincic has worked five total World Cup matches since making his tournament debut in 2022. In his three 2026 appearances, he has handed out just seven yellow cards.

He is averaging 2.33 yellow cards per game in this 2026 World Cup. His busiest match was the Round of 32 clash between Mexico and Ecuador, where he showed three yellows in a relatively quiet game that featured only 24 fouls and 21 tackles.

Has Vincic shown any red cards in this tournament?

Yes, he issued one red card during that Mexico-Ecuador Round of 32 matchup, sending off Piero Hincapie and leaving Ecuador down a man. Yet, in the Brazil-Morocco match, which featured a physical 30 fouls and 49 tackles, Vincic didn’t hand out a single card of either color.

Slavko Vincic with Ecuador and Mexico players (Getty Images)

Across his five career World Cup matches in 2022 and 2026, Vincic averages 3.0 yellow cards and 0.2 red cards per game. This remains significantly lower than his overall professional average of more than four bookings per match.

How many penalties has Vincic awarded in the World Cup?

Through his two World Cup tournaments, Vincic has yet to call a single penalty. This could be a crucial factor in the final, as Argentina vs. Spain promises to be a physical, high-stakes matchup for the Slovenian official.

From an analytical standpoint, Vincic is a referee who prefers to let the game flow. With his low booking average, he will likely let the players play early on, though he’ll surely be careful not to let the game get away from him.

Jurgen Klopp knows all too well how harsh criticism can be, and this time he didn't stay silent in the face of Thomas Tuchel's suffering.
Jurgen Klopp has forcefully come to the defense of Thomas Tuchel following England’s devastating 2026 World Cup exit. The former manager made it clear that the intense scrutiny his fellow countryman is currently facing is deeply unfair given the harsh realities of elite tournament.

“People always speak after the game like coaching is easy,” Klopp stated when discussing the tactical fallout. “Like you just choose attack or defend and that’s it. It doesn’t work like this. Football is much more complex.”

“I see the criticism of Tuchel for trying to defend the 1-0 against, but let me tell you something: if he didn’t do that, if he kept pushing forward and they conceded the same people would be saying, ‘Why didn’t he control the game? Why didn’t he defend the lead?’”

Klopp knows a lot about losing

“In knockout football, whatever decision you make, someone will criticise you,“ Klopp concluded regarding the immense pressure. “I’m not saying every decision is perfect, but you have to understand the logic behind it. Managing a game at that stage is never simple.”

England manager Thomas Tuchel

The German tactician speaks from a place of deep personal experience, having endured his own fair share of heartbreaking defeats throughout his illustrious career. And he was also given the opportunity to stay, just like Tuchel, who could also stay on as England manager for future tournaments.

During his transformative tenure at Liverpool, Klopp suffered painful losses in major continental finals, including Champions League heartbreaks and Europa League disappointments before finally tasting ultimate victory.

Has Klopp ever been a national team manager?

Despite frequently being linked to various high-profile international vacancies over the years, Klopp has never actually managed a national team. His entire legendary coaching career has been built strictly within the club game, spanning highly successful eras at Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, and Liverpool.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was not at all pleased with England's performance in the World Cup, especially in its defeat against Argentina.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has delivered a brutal reality check to England after its painful elimination by Argentina in the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup. The legendary striker didn’t hold back his harsh criticism, suggesting that the Three Lions need to seriously re-evaluate their actual level.

Speaking on ESPN UK, he questioned the Three Lions path: “How many times did England beat a proper team? Can I ask the audience here? A proper team? Yesterday they played against a proper team [Argentina] in a major tournament. Winning against Norway, with all respect for Norway, it’s not a proper team…”

He continued to dissect their performance by adding: “So yes, England showed fighting spirit and mentality. But let’s be honest, they didn’t beat a proper team. Yesterday was a reality check. There are levels to these games. Levels. That’s the difference.” But despite what Zlatan says, England could continue on the same path, securing Thomas Tuchel’s position.

A veteran’s right to critique

The Swedish icon concluded his passionate rant with a direct challenge to the squad: “Lookin the mirror and ask yourself how good are you?” This final question serves as a stinging reminder of the massive gap that still exists between England and the world’s absolute elite.

Lionel Messi of Argentina with Harry Kane of England

Ibrahimovic certainly has earned the right to voice such a strong opinion on international football. As a highly experienced veteran of the game, he has dominated domestic leagues across Europe for decades and proudly represented Sweden in two separate World Cup tournaments during his career.

Bright horizons ahead for the Three Lions

Despite this devastating semifinal defeat against Argentina, England still has a bright future. The current squad is packed with elite young talent capable of rebounding stronger than ever. With major tournaments on the horizon, they have plenty of opportunities to lift a trophy again.

Despite England's tough loss to Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, Thomas Tuchel could stay on as the Three Lions' manager.
Thomas Tuchel unfortunately fell short of reaching the 2026 World Cup final after a tough loss to Argentina. While the defeat drew heavy criticism from fans and former England players alike, his job with the national team is reportedly safe.

According to a report from The Athletic, the Three Lions manager is secure for the time being: “Tuchel is safe in his job. There were clauses in his lucrative contract that could have seen both parties end their partnership had England exited the World Cup before the quarter-finals.”

The article, co-authored by Jack Pitt-Brooke, Oliver Kay, David Ornstein, and Laurie Whitwell, also details how Pep Guardiola was once in the running to lead England. However, that was years ago, and Guardiola ultimately decided to remain with Manchester City.

Does Tuchel have the roster to make another deep run at the 2030 World Cup?

The short answer is yes, England has more than enough talent to dominate heading into the 2030 World Cup. In fact, on paper, the squad depth they will possess by 2030 is terrifying strong with young players getting more experience in the upcoming years.

Jude Bellingham #10 of England and Lionel Messi #10 of Argentina.

However, whether Tuchel will be the man leading them is a massive question mark, and the biggest obstacle to 2030 success isn’t the player pool, it is the tactical “DNA” of the team when the stakes are highest.

The beauty of England’s current cycle is that their biggest superstars are incredibly young. By 2030, the core of the team that suffered the heartbreaking 2-1 semifinal exit to Argentina will be in their absolute physical and mental primes:

Jude Bellingham (will be 27) – Already a leader, he will be at the absolute peak of his powers.

Bukayo Saka (will be 28) & Cole Palmer (will be 28) – Two world-class wingers/playmakers entering their veteran prime years.

Phil Foden (will be 30) – Transitioning into a seasoned, highly experienced midfield orchestrator.

Declan Rice (will be 31) – Providing the veteran defensive anchor.

England has its good and bad history in the World Cup; the record is negative for the Three Lions in the semifinals.
England has a defining history in the World Cup, reaching the high-stakes semifinal round four separate times. Across these legacy-defining fixtures, the iconic team has walked away with one solitary victory and suffered two agonizing defeats.

The ultimate triumph occurred on July 26, 1966, when the clinical hosts faced off against a dangerous Portugal. This legendary encounter ended in a celebrated victory that propelled the team into their first and only final.

Conversely, the two painful defeats occurred on July 4, 1990, and July 11, 2018, against two incredibly resilient opponents. First, the team fell to West Germany in a cruel penalty shootout, followed decades later by a defeat to Croatia.

England’s World Cup semifinal history

The legendary Sir Alf Ramsey became the very first England manager to lead his squad into a semifinal. That historic game took place at the old Wembley Stadium, where a brilliant double from Bobby Charlton sealed it. It remains a golden standard for every manager who has followed in those footsteps.

Sir Bobby Charlton (1937-2023) with Southgate (Getty Images)

1966 (Won): Defeat 2-1 against Portugal

1990 (Lost): Lost to West Germany on penalties

2018 (Lost): Lost to Croatia 2-1 in extra time

2026 (pending): Match against Argentina

Later, Sir Bobby Robson reached the final four at Turin’s Stadio delle Alpi, relying on stars like Gary Lineker. Gareth Southgate matched that feat in 2018 at the massive Luzhniki Stadium, leading a highly energetic young team.

Striking out in the quarterfinals

Before reaching the final four, the team frequently crumbled at the quarterfinal stage when a semifinal was close. In 1986, Diego Maradona’s famous goals at the Azteca Stadium knocked them out in an incredibly tense match. Decades later in Qatar 2022, a painful 2-1 defeat to France brought another promising campaign to an end.

2026 World Cup: Why did FIFA send referee Michael Oliver back to England?

https://bolavip.com/en/world-cup/2026-world-cup-why-did-fifa-send-referee-michael-oliver-back-to-england

Michael Oliver won’t be refereeing any more matches at the 2026 World Cup, and FIFA had a very good reason for sending him back to England.
Veteran referee Michael Oliver called four games at the 2026 World Cup, handing out 21 yellow cards and not a single red. Given his experience, many expected him to get at least one more assignment, potentially even the final. However, FIFA sent him home early because England advanced to the semifinals.

Oliver was supposed to be in the mix for the final. But because England, his home country, reached the semifinals, FIFA’s conflict-of-interest protocols were triggered, which automatically bar officials from refereeing matches involving their own nation or deep in the bracket when their team is still alive.

Oliver now has two World Cups under his belt, having also officiated in the 2022 edition. This solidified his status as a go-to referee for major international tournaments, especially World Cup qualifiers.

Did the Falkland Islands conflict play a role?

No. BBC Sport reporter Dale Johnson debunked the rumor that Oliver was sent home over a potential conflict of interest regarding the Falklands issue between Argentina and England. Johnson clarified that Oliver’s tournament simply ended once the Three Lions won their quarterfinal match.

Michael Oliver ready to book a player (Getty Images)

“While it is true there is a ‘Falklands rule,’ it’s not the key reason why Michael Oliver cannot referee the World Cup final. Officials of the four semi-finalists all go home, and do not get another game. So as soon as England beat Norway, Oliver’s tournament was over.”

Could Oliver return for another World Cup?

He likely can, provided he remains active. FIFA no longer enforces a strict referee retirement age. Oliver will be 45 in 2030, which is still relatively young for an elite official, meaning he could easily work another World Cup if FIFA deems him fit for the job.

Paul Scholes makes Argentina-England prediction and expects ‘chaos’ for the Three Lions

Paul Scholes delivered a deep analysis of what the semifinal between Argentina and England could look like, warning his national team of the potential dangers.
Paul Scholes has sparked intense pre-match debate by delivering a fiery prediction ahead of the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup clash between Argentina and England. The Manchester United legend warned the Three Lions to prepare themselves for absolute bedlam on the pitch, expecting a massive collision.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes pointed out that neither side has reached its peak form yet despite navigating their way through the knockout brackets. “I think England and Argentina’s paths have been very similar,” Scholes remarked.

Scholes believes the South American squad still hold a massive psychological over England. “The biggest advantage Argentina have is that they’ve done it before,” Scholes added. “They know how to win these big games. They won the last World Cup. We’re yet to prove that.”

Scholes predicts an explosive showdown

The former international is convinced that the sheer pressure of the occasion will cause the match to boil over into an unpredictable, high-scoring thriller filled with disciplinary trouble. Furthermore, he himself knows that England has always struggled to win World Cup semi-finals.

Paul Scholes says Argentina have been LUCKY at the World Cup, and predicts they’ll “all kick off” if England knock them out.

“I think England and Argentina’s paths have been very similar.

I don’t think either team has played that well, but they’ve got through games.

You think… pic.twitter.com/8978R8vapF
— HK (@HKFinalThird) July 14, 2026

“This will be chaos. This could be 4–3 either way. There’ll be yellow cards, red cards. If Argentina lose, they’ll all kick off. Absolutely guaranteed. And this game runs deep. If you lose to them, it’s horrible. Remember France ’98?”

Did Paul Scholes ever face Argentina on the World Cup?

Yes, Scholes has plenty of personal history with this specific fixture, having started for England against Argentina during the group stage of the 2002 World Cup in Sapporo, Japan. He played in central midfield. He was also on the infamous France ’98 round-of-16 clash he referenced, giving him a firsthand view of just how explosive this rivalry truly gets.
