First place in UEFA Nations League Group A1 is on the line when France host Belgium. France enter Matchday 4 at the top of the group with seven points from three matches, while Belgium sit second with six. That makes Monday’s meeting particularly important: a France victory would strengthen their position at the summit, while Belgium can move level with Les Bleus with a win.

The teams already faced each other in Brussels on September 28, with France winning 1-0 thanks to Michael Olise‘s late goal. Belgium responded with a 3-0 victory over Türkiye, while France drew 1-1 with Italy in their following match. The result against Italy ended France’s perfect start under Zinedine Zidane, but Les Bleus remain unbeaten in the Nations League.

There will also be important absences on both sides. Belgium are without Kevin De Bruyne and Youri Tielemans through suspension, removing two of their most influential midfielders. France, meanwhile, are missing Dayot Upamecano and Matteo Guendouzi through suspension, while Warren Zaire-Emery is out with a thigh injury.

Thibaut Courtois is sitting out the entire 2026–27 UEFA Nations League campaign after agreeing to take a temporary break from the Belgium national team. Hence, he is not on the lineup nor on the roster to face France.

He stated he plans to make himself available again for Belgium for the European Championship qualifiers. Still, in the meantime he is not even concentrating with Mark van Bommel’s team.

Who replaces Courtois’ spot on Belgium’s squad?

With Courtois unavailable, Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens is stepping in as the starter for Belgium. Lammens kept a clean sheet in Matchday 1 as Belgium won away from home 0-2 vs Italy.

Lammens is nowhere near Courtois level, but that is because Courtois is actually elite. Lammens is very serviceable. In fact, he plays for one of the most storied teams in soccer, even though Manchester United has seen better days.

Lammens is an intriguing project for the future

Lammens is rapidly proving he is much more than just a future project. He is actively becoming Belgium’s present long-term answer in goal, at least until Courtois, who is 34-years-old, comes back.

Key takeaways

• Thibaut Courtois is taking a break from Belgium for the entire 2026–27 Nations League.
• Goalkeeper Senne Lammens is stepping in as the starting goalkeeper for Belgium.
• Belgium secured a 0-2 away win against Italy in their Matchday 1 fixture.

Kylian Mbappe is missing France’s match against Belgium due to a hyperextension of the posterior capsule in his left knee. Unfortunately, he suffered the injury in the very shot he scored against Turkiye.

It is not a super heavy injury. Medical tests confirmed a left knee posterior capsule hyperextension, sidelining him for roughly 10 to 12 days, so he should be back promptly, but not enough to make him able to start for France in the upcoming games.

Who will replace Mbappe vs Belgium?

France head coach Zinedine Zidane has turned to depth options like Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, and Michael Olise in attack, with Dembele stepping up to wear the captain’s armband.

The good thing for France is they do have a very deep pool of talent to choose from. However, Mbappe is still as elite as a striker can be. Mbappe already left the national team camp and returned to Real Madrid to undergo treatment.

The matchup is a must-win for both teams

France and Belgium both won in Matchday 1 of the UEFA Nations League. Mbappe guided Les Bleus towards an away win, while Belgium made a top-tier away statement beating Italy 0-2.

This means whoever wins today’s game is en route to first place of Group A of the UEFA Nations League. Hence, it will be an intense matchup that will define the group moving forward.

Key takeaways

• Kylian Mbappé will miss the Nations League match against Belgium due to a left knee injury.
• The forward sustained the hyperextension while scoring the winning goal against Turkiye.
• Mbappé has left the national camp and returned to Real Madrid for treatment.

Belgium and France meet on September 28 in League A, Group A1 of the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League, with both teams facing one of the toughest groups in the competition alongside Italy and Turkiye.

The matchup is particularly intriguing because both national teams are beginning a new coaching era: Mark van Bommel has taken charge of Belgium, while Zinedine Zidane is leading France for the first time in competitive action. UEFA itself highlighted Belgium vs. France as one of the key games to watch in the opening stage.

The timing adds another layer to the fixture. Belgium first face Italy on September 25, while France open their campaign away against Turkiye on the same day. The September 28 meeting is therefore the second game of the international window for both sides, followed by another Belgium-Turkiye and France-Italy matchup on October 2. Thibaut Courtois is sitting out the entire UEFA Nations League campaign after reaching an agreement to take a temporary break from the Belgium national team. This came after a series of events and choices that caused the 34-year-old goalkeeper to come to this decision.

As stated, this is a temporary break, Courtois is not fully retiring from international soccer affairs. It just so happens that he will skip the Nations League, so Belgium needs a new goalie. This might put him at a disadvantage for the future, as other goalkeepers will have this time to train and understand new manager Mark van Bommel.

What are the reasons for Courtois’ break?

Mark van Bommel didn’t commit to make Courtois the undoubted starter of the team, which has been his usual place in the lineup. This rubbed Courtois the wrong way as for now. However, Courtois stated he wants to return for Euro 2028 qualifiers and is willing to fight for his spot.

Also, Courtois has had some injury-riddled seasons, and he wants to manage his physical workload and recovery following the all-demanding club schedules. By resting during the Nations League, he’ll be able to stay fresh.

Belgium’s available GKs vs Italy

Given Courtois’ absence, new goalkeepers will have an opportunity to shine and get their international careers fully going against Italy. There are three different options for van Bommel to choose from:

• Senne Lammens
• Maarten Vandevoordt
• Jari De Busser

The group also includes France and Turkiye, meaning both teams face a demanding six-match league phase in which every point could matter in the race for the quarterfinals.

The four group winners and four runners-up advance to the knockout stage, so finishing among the top two is enough to secure a place in the quarterfinals.

For Italy, the match represents the beginning of another rebuild under Roberto Mancini, who has returned for his second spell as Azzurri coach. Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and Mancini has responded with a 34-player squad featuring nine players receiving their first senior call-ups.

Belgium are also starting a new chapter. Mark van Bommel is taking charge of the Red Devils for the first time in an international competitive match, replacing Domenico Tedesco.

UEFA notes that this will be Van Bommel’s first head-coaching role at international level, while Belgium still have experienced players such as Kevin De Bruyne, who has confirmed that he intends to continue representing his country.

According to journalist David Ornstein, United decided to move forward with the transfer by triggering a £35 million mechanism. Aston Villa had absolutely no intention of selling their star playmaker and even put a lucrative new contract on the table.

Fabrizio Romano further confirmed the package by dropping his famous “here we go” catchphrase regarding deal. The Italian insider noted that a verbal agreement is fully in place with the Belgian international to finalize the paperwork.

What Tielemans brings to Manchester United?

The midfielder boasts an impressive track record, having made 93 appearances and scoring 5 goals for Aston Villa at the Premier League. His brilliant intelligence on the pitch recently helped anchor Unai Emery’s side all the way to a historic Europa League title.

United’s tactical setup will benefit immensely from his exceptional progressive passing ability and superb knack for regaining central ball possession. He famously holds a Premier League record for completing 126 successful passes in a single match against Everton.

Displaying elite worth on the World Cup

Despite Belgium being eliminated from the tournament, Tielemans utilized the global stage to prove he belongs at a historic powerhouse. He served as a crucial pillar for the Red Devils, famously scoring two vital goals against Senegal in the Round of 32. That stellar performance solidified his reputation as an elite big-game player.

The 29-year-old has now amassed 90 senior international caps for his country since making his debut in 2016. Captaining his nation during this summer’s tournament showed the soccer world that he possesses the leadership required for Old Trafford.

During the second half against Spain, Thibaut Courtois had to receive medical attention due to a leg injury. Minutes later, Courtois was subbed off, which caused a great deal of intrigue and concern among fans.

After the match and Belgium’s subsequent elimination from the 2026 World Cup, Thibaut Courtois spoke to the media about what happened. The Real Madrid goalkeeper revealed he suffered a quadriceps issue, though he still believes it was unnecessary for him to be subbed off.

“I felt a lot of pain in my quadriceps. But I had no problem with staying in goal though, only for long kicks,” Courtois said after the match. “In the end the manager decided to take me off, this is no problem as the team goes above everything.”

Thibaut Courtois wants to take time off from international duty

Following his exit, Thibaut Courtois had to watch from the bench as a costly mistake by his substitute led to Spain’s decisive 2-1 goal. With Belgium eliminated, the heartbreak has caused the Real Madrid star to reconsider his international future.

Courtois remains one of Belgium’s focal stars, and his presence on the pitch has long been key for the Red Devils to maintain their status as serious contenders. However, following this agonizing elimination, Courtois confirmed he will be taking some time off from international duty.

“I want to rest for a year without any Belgium matches, and then play the EURO qualifiers and the 2028 EURO,” Courtois said. “I don’t know if Belgium will agree to this.”

Courtois’ exit had a direct impact on the game

With the score leveled at 1-1, Courtois felt pain in his leg with roughly 20 minutes left in the game. Rudi Garcia chose not to take any chances and decided to sub him off, giving Senne Lammens the opportunity to play.

Unfortunately, this change did not work to Belgium’s benefit. The Manchester United goalkeeper committed a costly mistake at the end of the match, resulting in Mikel Merino’s winning goal and securing Spain’s victory over the Red Devils.

Courtois’ setback comes after Belgium were forced into a last-minute team change due to injury, with captain Youri Tielemans picking up a suspected hamstring injury in the warm-up.

Tielemans was set to start alongside Nicolas Raskin in the middle but was replaced by Club Brugge midfielder Hans Vanaken just 12 minutes before kick-off.

A costly injury

Senne Lammens entered the match for Courtois but was responsible for Spain taking the lead. Following a shot from Pau Cubarsi, Lammens gave up an unusual rebound, which was tracked down by Mikel Merino, who scored with ease.

It was a mistake that cost them the match. Belgium had done everything possible to defend and play on transitions against a dominant Spain, but they lost due to a costly blunder.

This already leaves everyone wondering: what would have happened if Courtois had stayed on the pitch? Would Spain have secured the goal? How long would they have lasted, or is it possible they could have even secured the victory with their own mystique?

Belgium on the verge of an epic comeback

Belgium initially fell behind following a great goal by Fabian Ruiz, who earned a place in the starting lineup for Spain. Later, Charles De Ketelaere managed to score with a header following an assist from Timothy Castagne.

In the afternoon of Thursday, July 9th, a downed power line, combined with strong winds and an intense heatwave unleashed a huge fire that burned through more than 3,150 acres of land around the towns of Los Gallardos and Bedar in Almeria.

Now, a day later and with Spain on the pitch before their game vs Belgium, FIFA made the humanitarian decision of showing support to the victims by honoring them with a minute of silence before the game kicked off. Unfortunately, this was not the only minute of silence in a Spain game due to a tragedy happening during the 2026 World Cup.

Victims of the Almeria wildfires

The blaze tragically took the life of at least 12 people according to reports by BBC. Some victims were trapped in their cars while trying to flee. Others succumbed while trying to get away from the flames on foot along an unauthorized route. An additional 23 people were reported missing.

Approximately 1,000 residents were forced to evacuate the towns. Also, around 600 people were displaced, taking shelter in local facilities set up by Spanish emergency services. This is an ongoing procedure to save more and more lifes.

FIFA has humanitarian aids

FIFA operates a dedicated FIFA Foundation Humanitarian Fund. This foundation provides emergency assistance and life-saving relief to communities affected by natural and human-made disasters globally. Hence, it wouldn’t be rare to see them supporting Almeria.

As a matter of fact, the FIFA Foundation pledged $1 million to aid areas impacted by a devastating earthquake. This included a joint $500,000 education restoration initiative with artist Shakira.
