Bo Bichette and the New York Mets are finally proving why their high-stakes gamble on the shortstop was a top priority during the offseason.
The New York Mets are fighting to dig themselves out of an early-season hole. Following a brief flash of success before dropping the series opener to the Seattle Mariners on June 1, shortstop Bo Bichette—62 games into his tenure—finally answered the mounting criticism surrounding his prolonged offensive slump in Queens.

In the series finale against Seattle, Bichette reminded everyone why the Mets made a high-stakes gamble to acquire him, turning in his first four-hit performance with the club and the 19th of his career. It marked a familiar flash of brilliance for the infielder, who racked up five such multi-hit games with the Toronto Blue Jays last season.

Entering the matinee mired in a brutal 0-for-16 skid, Bichette broke out of his funk in a big way, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and three RBIs. His clutch production provided the exact offensive punch the Mets needed to secure the victory and keep chasing a .500 record.

Manager Carlos Mendoza has fiercely backed his shortstop amid the early-season struggles, and that patience is finally paying dividends. Now, the Flushing faithful are hoping this breakout performance keeps him locked in for the stretch ahead as the Mets look to improve upon their 27-35 record.

Bo Bichette entered today in an 0-for-16 funk.

He's 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Baseball. pic.twitter.com/rNJqafRFEm
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) June 3, 2026

Reactions to Bichette’s breakout performance

Mendoza was quick to praise his shortstop’s resilience after Wednesday’s victory over the Mariners. “Hopefully, now, he continues to get results and he gets going here. I feel like this guy has been very unlucky, I hate to say it. He’s a good hitter,” Mendoza told reporters during his postgame press conference.

Bichette also expressed immense relief after finally snapping his cold streak in front of the home crowd. “That’s all I want, is to help the team win,” Bichette told SNY in a walk-off interview on the field.

Bichette’s season outlook in flushing

Getting another high-profile bat going is crucial for a Mets lineup that already features superstar Juan Soto performing at an MVP caliber. If Bichette can carry this newfound confidence forward, it completely transforms the dynamic of the offense, though it remains no secret that his overall seasonal numbers still have a long way to go to meet expectations.

Bo Bichette broke out with a home run and a three-hit night as manager Carlos Mendoza continues to back the struggling New York Mets infielder.
The New York Mets finally received an encouraging performance from Bo Bichette on Monday night, and manager Carlos Mendoza quickly showed confidence in the veteran infielder after weeks of growing criticism. Bichette helped lead New York to a 16-7 extra-inning win over the Washington Nationals, finishing with a home run, three hits, and three RBIs in one of his best games of the season.

After the game, Mendoza defended Bichette and made it clear he still believes the former All-Star can become an important piece for the Mets offensively. “I know it’s been a big topic, but at the end of the year, we’re going to look back at these seven weeks and nobody’s going to be talking about this,” Mendoza said, according to MLB.com. “He’s that good of a hitter. He’s that good of a player.”

Before the game, Bo Bichette had shown frustration with his performance, but that changed on Monday. The strong outing arrived at an important time for him, as he entered the night batting just .219 with a .570 OPS. His struggles had become a major storyline around the Mets, especially after a difficult Subway Series against the New York Yankees.

Bichette delivers much-needed breakout performance

Bichette gave the Mets an important boost in the seventh inning when he crushed a solo home run to left field against Nationals pitcher Mitchell Parker. The hit ended a long stretch without an extra-base hit and appeared to give the infielder a noticeable confidence boost at the plate.

Manager Carlos Mendoza #64 of the Mets looks on during the seventh inning.
After the win, Bichette admitted he felt better about his recent swings even before the results finally started showing up. “I feel like I’ve had a lot of swings that have been really close lately,” Bichette said. “I was just kind of waiting for something to connect to feel good about it.”

Mendoza believes Bichette can still help Mets

Despite Bichette’s slow start, Mendoza continues to support the infielder publicly and privately. The Mets manager believes experienced hitters can eventually work through difficult stretches, especially during a long MLB season.

Monday’s performance also helped shift attention away from Bichette’s recent struggles and reminded the Mets why they trusted him entering the season. Mendoza now hopes this game becomes the beginning of a more consistent stretch offensively.

The New York Mets made a major statement by signing Bo Bichette for the 2026 MLB season, although the player has yet to show his full potential.
The disappointing 2026 campaign for the New York Mets can be explained from different angles. One of them is likely the performance of their star players, including Bo Bichette, who since arriving in Queens has been unable to reach his ideal level, creating frustration and even uncertainty about his future.

“I don’t know if it’s been the toughest stretch of my career. But it’s up there,” he revealed to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. It may be that Bichette’s move from Toronto to New York has been a factor, given the difficult adjustment period the player is going through.

“There are a lot of things I didn’t anticipate. Just dealing with everything. New teammates. New organization. Staff. New fan base. Everything, I think,” the infielder also added. “Being on a new team, I just want to help the team, first off. But I think, naturally, I want to impress people and show people what I can do. Not being able to do that is tough.”

Carlos Mendoza has given him the confidence he needs, but the former Toronto Blue Jays standout still has not managed to live up to the standards of this team. In some ways, that explains the current situation for the Mets: fifth place in the NL East with a 20-26 record.

Bo Bichette #19 of the New York Mets.

Bichette intends to honor his contract

One of the biggest moves of the last offseason was Bo Bichette’s arrival to the New York Mets. The three-year deal included player opt-outs after the first two seasons, and while Bichette could still exercise those clauses, he made it clear that he intends to honor his contract and turn his situation around immediately.

“I signed here for three years. The opt-outs, any player would love them, to have control of their future, whatever the case might be, where they want to be, if they want to search for something else, I don’t know. But when I signed here, I took it as a three-year deal.”

The Mets await Bo Bichette’s best form

Through his first 46 games of the 2026 regular season, Bo Bichette is slumping significantly with the New York Mets, posting a subpar .210 batting average, just 2 home runs, 18 RBIs, and a weak .531 OPS across 186 at-bats.

This rough start might largely attributed to both the immense pressure of living up to his massive new 3-year, $126 million contract ($42 million annually) and the challenges of adjusting to The Big Apple.

Additionally, Bichette is physically and mentally trying to adapt to a new home on the diamond, heavily working on learning third base during his initial months in Queens, which has led him to press too hard at the plate as he tries to force a breakthrough.

Carlos Mendoza has full confidence in Bo Bichette heading into the New York Mets’ upcoming season.
The New York Mets are slowly beginning to get their season on track in MLB with hard-fought wins. However, Bo Bichette is still far from his best form at the plate, although Carlos Mendoza maintains that he is one of the best players in the league at his position.

“It feels like every day there’s one at-bat where he hits a rocket and somebody’s making a play. I’m not worried about him. The ball’s gonna find holes. He’s too good of a hitter,” the manager said.

The latest loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks exposed these struggles from Bichette in a key area of the field. Can Queens’ star player finally raise his level heading into what’s next?

Bo Bichette’s numbers at the plate in 2026

Bo Bichette has endured a difficult start to the 2026 season with the New York Mets, struggling to find his rhythm at the plate. Through 32 games, he is batting just .226 with 2 home runs and 16 RBIs, a significant drop from his career average of .291.

Bo Bichette #19 and manager Carlos Mendoza #64 of the New York Mets.

His struggles are largely attributed to a decrease in effectiveness against fastballs, hitting only .194 against them compared to his previous .306 mark. While an overly aggressive approach and timing issues have led to several routine outs, advanced metrics suggest he has also been quite unlucky; he leads the league in hits lost to exceptional defensive plays, and his expected batting average (xBA) sits much higher at .292, indicating a potential for a rebound if his luck turns.

Mendoza has depth options in that spot on the field

Carlos Mendoza has begun exploring different internal options to maintain New York‘s offensive production. While Bichette has recently been forced back to shortstop due to injuries to Francisco Lindor (calf strain) and Ronny Mauricio (fractured thumb), his slumping bat has opened the door for Mark Vientos and Brett Baty to see more consistent action at the corners.

Additionally, the recent promotion of Vidal Brujan from Triple-A Syracuse provides Mendoza with a versatile defensive substitute, allowing the team to rotate the infield mix as they look for a reset to snap their current losing streak.

Bo Bichette is one of the voices in the New York Mets clubhouse that fans are eager to hear from as the team navigates a storm of poor results.
Bo Bichette is attempting to maintain a positive outlook as the New York Mets continue to navigate a turbulent start to the 2026 season. Despite the team’s high-profile offseason acquisitions, the star infielder admitted that the group is still searching for a collective spark to turn their fortunes around.

The declarations, shared by Dan Martin on X through SleeperMets, reveal a veteran who is trying to keep the clubhouse steady during a difficult stretch. “We’re definitely in the middle of it. But the World Series isn’t won in April. We’ve got a lot of season left,” Bichette noted, emphasizing that there is still time to recover from their opening slump.

Bichette further explained that the Mets current struggle is largely due to a lack of a clear team persona on the field. “The way to approach it is to come to the field and just play because we haven’t figured out an identity,” he added, highlighting the ongoing effort to find a winning rhythm in Queens.

Can the Mets still reach the postseason?

The road to October has become significantly steeper for the Mets, as their 9-19 record through late April represents one of the worst starts in franchise history. While Carlos Mendoza now part of troubling NY Mets history has been a major talking point, the focus remains on whether the current roster can overcome its statistical deficit.

Bo Bichette sat by himself in the Mets’ dugout for several minutes after they were swept by the Rockies pic.twitter.com/s9ChYkS1Oz
— SNY Mets (@SNY_Mets) April 27, 2026

Bo Bichette’s own performance has mirrored the team’s inconsistency, as he is currently hitting .233 with a .674 OPS through the first month of play. This is a far cry from the All-Star production the Mets expected when they signed him to a three-year, $126 million deal, though he has shown flashes of his hit-leading potential in recent games.

For the Mets to fulfill their postseason aspirations, they will need Bichette and the rest of the veteran core to find the “identity” he mentioned before the gap in the NL East becomes insurmountable. While April doesn’t crown a champion, the upcoming May schedule will likely determine if this high-priced roster can actually contend for a championship

Bo Bichette’s clutch bases-clearing double lifted the New York Mets past the Minnesota Twins in a high-scoring win, even with Francisco Lindor sidelined.
The New York Mets earned a hard-fought 10-8 win over the Minnesota Twins, and Bo Bichette delivered the defining moment of the night with a clutch bases-clearing double in the eighth inning. The victory came in a game filled with momentum swings, late pressure, and the key absence of Francisco Lindor, who was sidelined with a calf injury.

Bichette stepped up in a critical spot with the bases loaded and two outs, driving a line drive to left-center field that cleared the bases and gave the Mets the lead for good. “It didn’t feel like it to me… it looked like a good pitch to hit,” Bichette said after the game, according to MLB.com, reflecting on the at-bat that changed the outcome.

The win also came while the Mets dealt with a difficult situation, as Mendoza was recently backed by Steve Cohen amid the team’s struggles. After snapping a 12-game losing streak, New York’s offense found enough production to outlast Minnesota in a back-and-forth contest and secure its second straight victory.

Bichette delivers in biggest moment of Mets tenure so far

With the game tied in the eighth inning, Bichette came to the plate in a high-pressure situation and stayed aggressive early in the count. His approach paid off, as he drove a pitch off the wall to bring home three runs and swing the game in New York’s favor.

The hit marked one of his most impactful moments since joining the Mets and suggested growing comfort in key situations after a slow start to his tenure. Earlier contributions from Brett Baty and Francisco Alvarez helped keep New York within striking distance before Bichette’s late breakthrough.

While inconsistency remain concerns, the win offered a glimpse of resilience, with the Mets responding in a high-pressure environment to secure an important result.

Bo Bichette has surfaced in a report suggesting his knee may not be fully healthy, based on what scouts have observed. They are not impressed with how he’s moving, raising further concerns about his condition with the New York Mets.
Bo Bichette opened the season with some struggles at the plate but has started to show signs of improvement with better at-bats. Now, however, he’s the focus of a report raising concerns about his knee, with some scouts believing he may not be fully healthy, something that could become an issue for the New York Mets.

The report comes from Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated: “Scouts I’ve spoken with that have watched Mets‘ Bo Bichette run the bases don’t think he looks fully healthy. Bichette sprained the PCL in his left knee last September and appears to still be nursing the injury.”

According to Ragazzo, Bichette may have arrived in New York without fully recovering from the injury he suffered while with the Toronto Blue Jays, which limited him late last MLB season, although he only missed 23 games last year.

How many injuries has Bichette had in his career?

From 2016 through 2026, Bichette has dealt with roughly 10 injuries, ranging from minor issues to more serious setbacks. One of the most impactful came in 2024, when a calf strain sidelined him for 52 games. That same year, he also suffered a finger fracture, making it a particularly injury-plagued season.

Bo Bichette's first extra base hit as a Met is a double to drive in Juan Soto for the game's first run! pic.twitter.com/O17d90QVoI
— SNY (@SNYtv) April 3, 2026

Scouts’ concerns about his current condition add another layer of uncertainty. “He didn’t go first-to-third the other day,” one NL scout told Ragazzo. “Couldn’t beat out a ball that got away from Jeff McNeil either.”

For now, these are external evaluations from scouts not affiliated with the Mets. The team itself remains largely healthy, with the most notable absence being Juan Soto, who hasn’t played since April 3 and remains the biggest concern on the roster.

Bo Bichette showed signs of his form at the plate, with manager Carlos Mendoza praising his at-bats despite the New York Mets’ early-season offensive struggles.
After a rough start to his New York Mets career, Bo Bichette is beginning to show signs of the player the team expected, even if the results haven’t fully followed. Thursday’s game against the San Francisco Giants offered a glimpse of that potential, with several well‑struck balls that came up just short.

“Bo had some really good at-bats today,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said, according to SNY. “That first inning, that double. The one he drove to centerfield. I thought the at-bats from him today looked like Bo Bichette.”

Bichette’s box score read 1-for-4, but he could easily have had three hits. He doubled in the first to drive in the opening run, and in the third he nearly cleared the wall in center, missing by a foot. “I thought I hit it OK,” he said. “If I thought I got it, I would’ve come out of the box a little different.” It was another step forward for a player who recently Bichette reflected on redemption tour as he works back into form.

Confidence building through quality at-bats

Despite a slow start, just 3-for-27 with no extra-base hits entering Thursday, Bichette is showing improvement. He’s struck out just once in his last four games after eight strikeouts in his first three, signaling that he’s adjusting to Major League pitching and settling into his new team.

Bo Bichette #19 of the Mets hits a double against the Giants.

While Bichette’s resurgence hasn’t translated into immediate offense for the Mets, both he and Mendoza are focusing on process over results. “Maybe [we’re unlucky], but that’s not something to fall on. Should always be looking to do better, be better,” Bichette said.

The Mets will have another chance to see the infielder continue to find his rhythm as they take on the Giants in the next game of the series, hoping that quality at-bats turn into more production in the coming days.

Carlos Mendoza didn't fully commit to calling out Bo Bichette, Francisco Lindor, and other NY Mets stars after the loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
The New York Mets dropped their first road series of the 2026 MLB season in disheartening fashion. Carlos Mendoza’s side struggled to close out the three-game matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals, and many put the blame in the lackluster performances from Bo Bichette and Francisco Lindor, among others.

Mendoza, however, didn’t go as far as to throw his players under the bus after the 2-1 loss in the series closer against the Cardinals. However, New York’s manager addressed the struggles at the plate. The fact Mendoza stumbled over his words only made everything look worse for him, Bichette, Lindor, and the rest of the Mets.

“We’ve got to get back to what we do well. [We’ve got] good hitters that, right now for a couple of games, they’re not getting it done,” Mendoza said—being mindful of the words he used—after the game, via @SNY_Mets on X.

Mendoza didn’t give out names, but he really didn’t have to. Fans in Queens know exactly whom his message was intended for. Bichette and Lindor are in the eye of the storm after yet another concerning outing. Frankly, virtually every player on the roster is under the microscope, though. But with Bichette and Lindor, the criticism is the loudest.

“We’ve got to get back to what we do well…good hitters that, right now for a couple of games, they’re not getting it done”

Carlos Mendoza on the Mets’ offense: pic.twitter.com/h5Io74YLS0
— SNY Mets (@SNY_Mets) April 1, 2026

Bichette is off to rough start

Since his arrival, Bichette has struggled tremendously on the Mets. So far in the season, Bichette has had the most at-bats on the team (27), but registers concerning numbers: .111 AVG, .138 OBP, and .249 OPS. Bichette heard the jeering from fans, and he eyes a redemption tour with the Mets, but as it stands, that tour has yet to announce its dates and venues.

Bichette’s 8 strikeouts are the most in New York, tied with Marcus Semien, another player who’s feeling the wrath of the fanbase in Queens. As the two offseason acquisitions struggle, David Stearns and the front office are getting an earful from fans, as well.

Lindor’s mistakes

Lindor has been a tad better than Bichette at the plate, but it’s every other area of the game where he has had a rough start to the 2026 MLB campaign. Against the Cardinals on Wednesday, Lindor made two mental mistakes that fans won’t soon forget. First, Lindor was picked off at first base with Juan Soto at the plate.

To make matters worse, Soto hit a solo home run two pitches later. That was New York’s lone run of the afternoon after being blanked in the previous game. Lindor’s struggles didn’t start there, either. In the first inning, he lost track of the outs and let a chance at a double play slip through his fingers, as he jogged into second base instead of making the play and throwing to first immediately.

It has not been Francisco Lindor’s day so far. He forgot how many outs there were and got caught wondering off first base 😬 pic.twitter.com/13RDHJy0Um
— js9innings (@js9inningsmedia) April 1, 2026

Mets are in trouble early

Lindor is off his game. New York’s focus is off, too. Mendoza shied away from calling his players out after only six games this season, but it may have been called for. The Orange and Blue must now tread lightly—if they’re not careful, their season may be over before they know it.

After a tough opening stretch, Bo Bichette delivered a go-ahead RBI and showed signs of turning his Mets season around, embracing pressure and beginning to shift the narrative in New York.
Bo Bichette wasted no time responding to early-season boos from Mets fans, delivering his first clutch moment with New York by driving in the go-ahead run in Monday’s 4-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. After a rough start to the season, the All-Star shortstop is showing why he was signed to a three-year, $126 million deal.

“I just want to be in a position to compete every at-bat, and I felt like I did a better job of that today,” Bichette said after the game, according to MLB.com, reflecting on the pressure he faced early in the season and the responsibility he feels to turn things around.

Bichette’s go-ahead RBI single came in the fifth inning, lining a 106.8 mph single the other way with runners on first and second. The hit highlighted a swift turnaround after a difficult season-opening series, in which he went 1-for-14 with eight strikeouts.

Manager Carlos Mendoza praised Bichette’s approach: “I thought he was more under control, not trying to do too much… When he’s doing that, those are some good signs.”

Bo Bichette #19 of the Mets in action during the game against the Pirates.
From boos to production

After Bichette faced boos at Citi Field during the season opener, he reacted to NY Mets fan boos with blunt honesty as they grew louder over the weekend. Instead of getting frustrated, he accepted the criticism and focused on improving. His performance on Monday showed he can turn pressure into results, giving the Mets an immediate boost.

Even with a rough start, Bichette’s hitting skills remain top-level. Last season, he finished second in the Majors in batting average behind Aaron Judge and ranked in the 98th percentile in expected batting average. His ability to bounce back quickly has been a key part of his game.

First step of a New York redemption tour

Bichette’s bounce‑back performance in St. Louis offered the first real sign that he’s ready to handle New York’s pressure. After a rough opening series and early frustration from the fan base, his response showed the ability to adjust quickly, exactly what the Mets need as he begins shaping his own redemption narrative in 2026.

Bo Bichette knows he’s off to a rough start with the New York Mets and that fans haven’t gone easy on him, but the third baseman believes their frustration is completely justified.
Bo Bichette didn’t shy away from addressing the boos he heard at Citi Field during the New York Mets’ first home series. The team’s new star was honest, saying he understood the fans’ reaction and admitted his struggles at the plate have not been good.

Bichette’s response to reporters about the boos and his performance was direct: “If anything, I thought it took too long. I get it. I thought my at-bats were terrible, too,” said the Mets third baseman, who is currently hitting just .071.

The start to the season hasn’t been easy, with only one hit in 14 at-bats. Criticism has been strong, but Bichette also said he’s “wanting a moment” with the Mets, something that could signal to fans that his adjustment period may not take long.

Criticism surrounding Bichette

Fans haven’t been the only ones criticizing Bichette. Reporters and analysts have also pointed out his struggles, though many have praised the way he has handled the situation, calling his response professional and appropriate.

“Okay, you couldn’t have responded to this fanbase any better with that answer.
