Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos are set to kick off their 2026 NFL season in Week 1 with a challenging trip to Arrowhead to take on the Kansas City Chiefs.

Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season features a Monday Night Football showdown between two serious contenders. The Denver Broncos will visit the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead, with Bo Nix fully recovered from his injury and expected to take the field as Sean Payton’s starting quarterback.

Days ago, speaking with Big Day, the head coach himself confirmed that Nix is in very good shape heading into the season opener: “A lot of people were wondering, ‘Is he gonna have that same mobility to move around?’ We’ve seen it in practice. He’s in good shape.”

The good news for neutral fans is that Patrick Mahomes will also be playing in MNF, setting the stage for a fierce battle on the field. If both players can stay healthy throughout the season, there is no doubt they will go head-to-head in a race to determine which of their teams can claim the AFC West.

The streak Nix is looking to keep alive

Since entering the NFL, this will be the third Monday Night Football game Bo Nix has played in as a professional. How did he fare in the previous two? He won both games, and now he will look to continue his winning streak against the Chiefs.

Bo Nix is 2-0 on Monday Night Football in his career. Ahead of Week 1, he says it doesn't get old:

"It's very exciting. It means that you are in a really good spot as an organization, but it's also a great responsibility.
“It’s very exciting. It means that you are in a really good spot as an organization, but it’s also a great responsibility. You get put on Monday Night Football in Week 1, it means you have something to go out there and prove,” No.10 recently revealed to the press.

On December 2, 2024, the Broncos defeated the Cleveland Browns 41–32, with Nix completing 18 of 35 passes for 294 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Then, on September 29, 2025, they took down the Cincinnati Bengals 28–21, as the QB went 29-of-42 for 326 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

The injury is in the past

Bo Nix’s standout performance in Denver’s 33–30 playoff victory over the Buffalo Bills was cut short on the game-winning drive. Late in the fourth quarter, the quarterback suffered a fractured right ankle, forcing him out for the remainder of the postseason and requiring two offseason surgeries.

Sean Payton’s QB room alternatives

Over time, Nix has become one of the cornerstones of this team. However, if necessary, Sean Payton has two other options available should he need to replace his starting quarterback. Jarrett Stidham sits second on the Broncos’ depth chart, while Sam Ehlinger is listed further down.

Denver Broncos star Bo Nix commented on the advantage his team holds over the Kansas City Chiefs ahead of the Week 1 clash in the 2026 NFL season.

The Denver Broncos will start the 2026 NFL season facing the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1 in one of the week’s most compelling matchups. Denver will look to start on the right foot after bowing out in the AFC Championship Game a season ago, led by quarterback Bo Nix, who has strong confidence in the team.

Before Denver takes on the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football in Week 1, Nix talked about why having a new offensive coordinator might make things tougher on the Chiefs in the season opener, via Romi Bean of CBS News Colorado. “I think it’s tougher on them for sure because you just don’t know necessarily his style,” Nix said on having Davis Webb as OC.

“I’ve been around Davis for a few years, understanding what he likes, doesn’t like, the kind of style he’s gonna call the game with and stuff like that. Overall, I think it’s tougher for them to respond and adjust. At the end of the day, professional football is professional football, everybody seems to be doing similar things.

“They’re gonna play man or zone, we’re gonna run or pass, it’s really easy once you get down to it. It’ll be a cool little match to see Davis, his first game calling plays against arguably one of the better DCs in the league.”

Bo Nix of Denver Broncos.

Nix seeking redemption

Nix missed that AFC Championship loss a season ago with an ankle injury, leaving him hungry after returning and getting healthy this offseason. The Broncos have a ton of continuity on their roster and even added explosive wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to give Nix another elite weapon on the outside.

Nix was asked in a press conference about the wait after practice on Wednesday. “I think every year when you start, there’s gonna be things, we haven’t been playing for five, six months. There’s gonna be things to get back and get going again. But when I was out there against Green Bay it was kind of like a carry over of last season,” Nix said.

Nix looked good versus the Packers, completing 6-of-9 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown while leading scoring drives in both of his series. Head coach Sean Payton saw enough to keep Nix out of the preseason finale against the Vikings.

Those in-game adjustments will be key against a Chiefs team coming off a disappointing 6-11 NFL season after appearing in five Super Bowls during the Patrick Mahomes era. For Nix, he sounds ready to roll, treating this like another game, though there is no doubt the winner will take the early driver’s seat in the AFC West.

The Denver Broncos and the Green Bay Packers are playing, but are franchise quarterbacks Bo Nix and Jordan Love suiting up?

Bo Nix and Jordan Love are two very established quarterbacks playing for high-quality teams. However, the Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers don’t have the 2026 NFL Preseason as their biggest priority.

Per the Broncos PR team, Bo Nix will make his preseason debut vs Packers. As expected, Sean Payton said Nix will play around 14 snaps against Green Bay. “It’s always a blast to play at home,” Nix said on Tuesday’s press conference.

Friday’s game is the first time quarterback Bo Nix will hear play calls from new offensive coordinator Davis Webb during a live match scenario. Hence, even if just for 14 snaps, this could be a sign of things to come, for good or bad.

Is Jordan Love playing for Packers vs Broncos?

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said earlier this week the plan is for the starters, including quarterback Jordan Love, to play Friday night against the Broncos. It is clear that the starters won’t play much, but they’re also changing stuff in the coaching staff. For instance, Sean Mannion left his QB coach role to become the offensive coordinator in Philadelphia.

LaFleur says the plan is for Jordan Love to play in Denver on Friday.
— Matt Schneidman (@mattschneidman) August 18, 2026

As for Love, the playcaller is still LaFleur, so he should be in a known environment in that regard. Still, preseason is to get into competing rhythm, not to go all out. The main goal here is to leave healthy.

Nix and Love need to show they can lift the ceiling

Both the Broncos and Packers know they have upside quarterbacks on their rosters. However, they are not regarded as top-tier, elite signal-callers. It’s now up to both Nix and Love to guide the rosters to the promised land.

In the case of Nix, he has a stacked roster to join him. Meanwhile, Love has a bit lesser receiving corp, but the Packers are still regarded as an NFC contender, and Love is tasked with guiding them all the way.

Bo Nix and Nik Bonitto were involved in an altercation during Denver Broncos training camp. According to the quarterback, it’s simply part of the game.

Training camp can often get heated as preparations intensify ahead of the Week 1 opener. That was the case at the Denver Broncos’ facilities, where Bo Nix and Nik Bonitto were involved in an altercation.

The pass rusher had to be restrained by his teammates after becoming frustrated when his own quarterback grabbed him by the leg. Nix, who should be protected more carefully during practice, took a sack. Sean Payton’s team had an intense session, but the QB played down the incident.

“I love it. It’s football,” Nix said to the press. “It’s getting me ready for the games coming up. It’s a physical practice played by physical people. So it got intense and we were really enjoying it, and sometimes in the dog days of summer, practice gets long and the intensity gets high.”

Time to protect Nix

Intensity is necessary during practice, especially at this stage of the preseason. However, there is no need to put players’ health at risk, especially when it comes to the team’s biggest stars.

Nik Bonitto #15 of the Denver Broncos celebrates after defeating the Las Vegas Raiders.

Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph was far from pleased with what happened during the latest practice. “We don’t want anyone near Bo,” the DC said regarding the altercation.

Broncos’ upcoming games

Bo Nix is expected to see game action during this stretch of preparation, with the Broncos having two interesting games ahead before the start of the regular season. On Friday, August 21, they will host the Green Bay Packers at Empower Field before wrapping up their preseason at home against the Minnesota Vikings on August 28.

"Super excited, it's always a blast to play at home…for me, all the games feel the same, so it'll be good to get some work in."

Bo Nix is READY to play in a game again #broncoscountry https://t.co/XbXLmN2Ept pic.twitter.com/4Xle05sbu4
— Guerilla Sports (@guerillasports) August 18, 2026

This team’s Week 1 opener will be a high-profile matchup. They will visit Arrowhead on September 14, where they will face Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Denver Broncos kick off their 2026 NFL Preseason Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons, where questions remain over whether Bo Nix plays today.

The Denver Broncos look to start on the right foot in NFL Preseason Week 1 as they face the Atlanta Falcons, who will likely use Tua Tagovailoa. However, questions remained in the air regarding whether Bo Nix would play today for Denver.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, Nix will not take the field. Quarterback Bo Nix will not play in the Denver Broncos preseason opener at Atlanta, coach Sean Payton said Wednesday. Sam Ehlinger and Jarrett Stidham will each play a half against the Falcons on Friday night.

Nix is coming off two right ankle surgeries in the offseason but did not miss any snaps at training camp. Payton said he will play when the Broncos host the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 21 and again a week later against the Minnesota Vikings.

Waiting to see Nix

Payton said the decision to sit Nix has nothing to do with the rash of injuries on the offensive line, particularly at center, where the team has had three players get hurt, including Michael Deiter, whom Payton said is out for the season with a quadriceps injury. Starting center Luke Wattenberg (arm) and backup Alex Forsyth (ankle) are also sidelined.

Bo Nix #10 of the Denver Broncos.

Payton said the decision to sit Nix in the preseason opener was made a month ago, but that if this were the regular season, he would expect Nix to play and be 100%. The Broncos’ other starters are expected to suit up for about 15 plays.

What happened to Nix?

Nix suffered a fractured right ankle in the closing minutes of the Broncos’ AFC divisional-round playoff win over the Buffalo Bills in January, had an initial surgery to repair the fracture in the days following the game, and then had a follow-up surgery in April to treat bone spurs in the same ankle.

He missed most of the on-field work in the Broncos’ offseason program and threw on only a limited basis in their mandatory minicamp in June. Nix faces pressure this NFL season. During his rookie season in 2024, Nix played in 17 games. He completed 66.3% of his pass attempts for 3,775 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, while also running for 430 yards and four more scores.

Last season, the 26-year-old quarterback threw for 3,931 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, while completing 63.4% of his passes. He also chipped in with 356 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

Bo Nix and Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos want to remain a title-contending team in the NFL next season.

The 2026 NFL season is close to beginning, and the preseason is shaping up to be a major test ahead of the start of the campaign. Bo Nix revealed his excitement about being able to step onto a field soon, but Sean Payton has yet to reveal whether his stars will be present for these three games.

“I’m excited,” the quarterback said to the press. “I think preseason’s always a great time to get back out there and get your feet wet a little bit and see defenses in a live situation before the first [regular-season] game.”

Will No. 10 be on the field against the Atlanta Falcons? Payton keeps it a mystery: “We haven’t gone through the role yet,” the head coach said, via Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette. “I’ll let you know when we go through the roles.”

What preseason games do the Broncos have?

The Denver Broncos’ 2026 NFL preseason lineup kicks off on Friday, August 14, with a road game against the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Following their opener, the Broncos return to Empower Field at Mile High for two consecutive home games to close out their tune-up slate: hosting the Green Bay Packers on Friday, August 21, and taking on the Minnesota Vikings on Friday, August 28.

Denver wants to improve on its 2025 campaign

Heading into the 2026 season, the Broncos will look to build upon a remarkable 2025 campaign where they finished 14–3 to win the AFC West. While Denver boasted an elite defense that allowed just 18.3 points per game (3rd in the NFL), the team seeks greater efficiency from an offense that averaged 23.6 points (14th in the league) and produced 5,825 total yards.

Starting quarterback Bo Nix delivered a strong effort, throwing for 3,931 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions with an 87.8 passer rating (along with 356 rushing yards and 5 rushing scores), but the offense stalled at the worst possible moment.

After defeating the Buffalo Bills 33–30 in the Divisional Round, Denver’s Super Bowl pursuit came to an agonizing end with a 10–7 loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game, making offensive consistency and finishing drives in the postseason the top priority for 2026.

The Denver Broncos will come into the 2026 NFL season as a top contender, and that idea has been reinforced by Sean Payton's optimistic update on quarterback Bo Nix.
Bo Nix suffered a right ankle injury in the AFC Divisional Round last season. However, he had a second procedure in late April. Concerns certainly rose on the status of the Denver Broncos quarterback. However, head coach Sean Payton stated a return date that will appease pretty much everyone.

“There’s a good chance we see him in this offseason program in June,” Payton said during a press conference on Saturday. “We’re going to be the ones kind of holding back, if you will.” In any case, Payton said Nix will be “clearly full speed” in time for training camp later in the summer.

Nix was a key component of the Broncos success last season. In fact, his absence during the AFC Championship Game might be the reason why Denver wasn’t able to go to the Super Bowl. Payton’s words are very reassuring for Broncos fans.

Bo Nix is a very effective QB

While no one will put Nix as an MVP candidate, he is definitely an effective quarterback with a winning mentality. That’s what Sean Payton likes to have under center, someone who can get things done, and is a mature processor of the game.

Bo Nix #10 of the Denver Broncos

Nix led the NFL in passing attempts, completed 63.4% of his passes for 3,931 yards, 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also led the league in game-winning drives with seven. Clutch at its peak.

The Broncos have bolstered Nix’s weapons

Last year, the Broncos had decent weapons in Courtland Sutton and Troy Franklin. However, tight end Evan Engram wasn’t as productive as expected and Marvin Mims wasn’t as explosive.

Well, the Broncos took notice and traded for wideout Jaylen Waddle, who will be an instant difference-maker in this offense. They are also likely to give more looks to tight end Adam Trautman. Hence, Nix could be even better this 2026 NFL season.

Following a breakout 2025 campaign that saw the Denver Broncos capture their first AFC West title in a decade and reach the AFC Championship Game, wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. has officially set the bar at the highest level for 2026.
Following a breakout 2025 campaign where he established himself as a premier deep threat and All-Pro returner, Marvin Mims Jr. is making no secret of his team’s ambitions. Mims emphasized that he wants Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos to reach Super Bowl LXI.

The Broncos are currently regarded as a top-tier team in the AFC. In 2025, thanks to Sean Payton’s coaching, the club ended the Chiefs’ dominance in the AFC West to secure their 16th divisional title.

Based on that previous campaign, fans have high expectations for 2026. Marvin Mims shares these feelings, as the wide receiver believes the Broncos are true contenders to win the upcoming Super Bowl.

“For me, it’s just answering the door when the bell is rung,” Mims said, via the Denver Post. “I feel like I’ve done that pretty well the past three years, but when I get my opportunities, make the most of it. Be a good teammate and assist the team in however many ways they want. This year, the team we have, the roster we have, how far we went last year, we’re all expecting a Super Bowl this year.”

Can the Broncos build a dynasty in the AFC West?

From 2011 to 2015, the Broncos were the dominant force in the AFC West. However, from 2016 to 2024, the Chiefs took control of the division with a dynasty built by Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes.

Last year, Denver reclaimed control of the division, leaving many wondering if they can maintain this dominance. While Bo Nix is still recovering from a season-ending ankle injury suffered in the Divisional Round against Buffalo, expectations remain high for him and the club.

In 2025, the Broncos won the AFC West and the Chargers advanced as a Wild Card team, leaving the Chiefs out of the playoffs entirely. For 2026, Denver enters as the favorite to win the division once again, but they cannot afford to get comfortable.

The Chiefs’ winning mentality remains very much alive. While Patrick Mahomes continues to rehab from the significant knee injury (torn ACL/LCL) he suffered late last season, Andy Reid is unlikely to let his team miss the playoffs for a second consecutive year.

The Chargers are seen as the biggest threat to Denver’s plans. Jim Harbaugh has completely shifted the team’s culture, maximizing Justin Herbert’s potential and proving they have a competitive roster capable of fighting for the division.

Finally, the Raiders represent a new challenge. With a new head coach in Klint Kubiak and a new quarterback in Fernando Mendoza, Las Vegas is expected to improve. However, this year may serve as a transitional test as the team adapts to Kubiak’s guidance.

The Broncos’ outstanding offense

During this offseason, the Broncos made a splash by acquiring Jaylen Waddle via trade with the Dolphins. They now boast a formidable trio of Courtland Sutton, Troy Franklin, and Waddle as the primary targets for Bo Nix.

Beautiful ball from Bo Nix to Sutton for 6! 🔥

📺: FOX pic.twitter.com/zpKtL6oAKA
— FOX Sports: NFL (@NFLonFOX) November 2, 2025

The backfield features a lethal duo in JK Dobbins and RJ Harvey. While there are some questions regarding the consistency of Evan Engram at tight end, it appears Nix has plenty of weapons to pursue the Super Bowl title that Mims envisions.

Bo Nix is progressing well after ankle surgery, but the Broncos aren't taking any chances.
The Denver Broncos are taking a cautious approach with Bo Nix as he continues his recovery from a significant ankle injury, but the overall outlook remains positive.

After suffering a fractured ankle during the Divisional Round in an overtime win against the Buffalo Bills, Nix was unable to play in the AFC Championship Game, a major factor in Denver falling short of a Super Bowl appearance. Now, months later, the focus is on ensuring he returns fully healthy.

According to Ian Rapoport, Nix recently underwent a routine follow-up procedure as part of that process. “During his scheduled re-check with Dr. Norman Waldrop last week, Broncos QB Bo Nix had a successful and anticipated follow-up clean-up procedure on his ankle. While the team is expected to be conservative with his participation during the offseason program, Nix continues to make strong progress in his recovery and remains firmly on track to be ready for the start of training camp.”

Bo Nix’s injury update: Broncos QB had another procedure

Despite the encouraging update for Bo Nix, the Broncos are not expected to rush their quarterback back into full action this spring. Rapoport emphasized that this kind of procedure is standard and does not change the broader timeline.

“For Broncos QB Bo Nix, having a follow-up cleanup procedure after a fractured ankle is not rare or unexpected and he’s still expected to be ready for the season. That said, don’t be surprised if the team takes it very easy with him this spring.”

That cautious approach reflects both the severity of the initial injury and the importance of having Nix at full strength when it matters most. While projections continue to point toward a full recovery in time for the 2026 season, the Broncos appear focused on managing his workload carefully throughout the offseason.

JK Dobbins knows that with Jaylen Waddle joining the team, the Denver Broncos are shaping up to be a formidable NFL contender.
A rival to fear, that’s what the Denver Broncos are heading into what’s coming. Even more so after the addition of Jaylen Waddle. At least that’s how JK Dobbins sees it this offseason.

“And then we’ve got another guy that just came in, Jaylen Waddle, you know what I’m saying?” the running back said on NFL Network’s The Insiders. “Pick your poison because we’ve got Courtland Sutton, we’ve got the young Pat Bryant, we’ve got a great O-line, we’ve got everything. We’ve got an embarrassment of riches on this team of talent.“

He even warned his rivals about what they’re about to see: “I’m excited. I really am, because, call it what it is, I got hurt, I missed the last, what, seven games in the regular season. I’m fresh. I’m gonna be fresh and I’m gonna be pissed off because I’m tired of the unfortunate stuff. “

The serious injury he suffered during the regular season kept Dobbins out for much of it. It’s not unreasonable for him to feel that thirst for revenge, especially with the talent surrounding him.

J.K. Dobbins #27 of the Denver Broncos.

How much can Waddle contribute to the Broncos?

The addition of Waddle to the Denver Broncos is a massive win for Bo Nix, as he gains an elite vertical threat to stretch the field alongside J.K. Dobbins. Waddle arrives after a solid 2025 campaign with the Dolphins, where he hauled in 64 receptions for 910 yards and 6 touchdowns in 16 games, averaging an impressive 14.2 yards per catch.

Bo Nix’s arsenal

Heading into the 2026 season, Bo Nix is surrounded by a versatile arsenal designed to maximize his quick processing and accuracy. The unit is anchored by veteran Courtland Sutton, who remains a premier red-zone threat, and elite tight end Evan Engram, who provides a reliable safety valve across the middle.

To stretch the field, Nix can rely on the explosive speed of Marvin Mims Jr. and his former college teammate Troy Franklin, whose established chemistry with Nix offers the Broncos a high-upside vertical duo capable of punishing any secondary.

Dobbins’ injury is behind him

In 2025, JK Dobbins suffered a season-ending Lisfranc injury in his left foot during the third quarter of a Week 10 victory against the Las Vegas Raiders on November 6. The injury occurred due to a hip-drop tackle and required surgery, forcing him to miss the final seven games of the regular season and Denver‘s playoff run.

Despite the setback, Dobbins is fully expected to be ready for the 2026 season; he recently re-signed with the Broncos on a new two-year deal and stated in March 2026 that he feels fresh and ready to lead the backfield again.

The Denver Broncos need to surround Bo Nix with more weapons, and they could reunite the quarterback with a former Oregon teammate who impressed at the 2026 NFL Combine.
After a strong 2025 season, the Denver Broncos want to remain on top of the AFC West. To do that, they will need to provide Bo Nix with more weapons, and a former Oregon teammate of the quarterback could be the answer to their offensive struggles.

The Broncos were able to reach the AFC Championship Game in a year not many expected them to succeed. Nevertheless, despite a solid campaign, most fans know Bo Nix needs to be surrounded by more top-tier weapons.

While the club is expected to focus on acquiring a wide receiver, the tight end position remains a priority as well. Now, the Broncos have a unique chance to select a player who already knows what it’s like to catch passes from Nix due to their college connection.

Kenyon Sadiq impresses at NFL Combine, Broncos a potential landing spot

On Friday, tight end prospects took the stage at the 2026 NFL Combine to prove their worth to all 32 teams. Fortunately for Kenyon Sadiq, it was a very good day to stand out.

The tight end entered the Combine as the top prospect at his position and solidified that status with an outstanding performance, even breaking an all-time record.

The former Oregon player, who played the 2023 season with Bo Nix as his quarterback, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds, breaking the mark set by Vernon Davis (4.40) in 2006 for a tight end.

Sadiq is a 6-foot-3, 241-pound tight end whose athleticism is impossible to ignore. He also impressed with an 11-foot-1 broad jump and a 43.5-inch vertical jump — rare marks for a player of his size at the position.

Several mock drafts project Kenyon Sadiq as a top-20 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, which is not ideal for the Broncos, who hold the 30th overall selection in the first round. However, a trade up could be possible, especially considering the connection between the tight end and Bo Nix from their Oregon days.

The Broncos need a solid tight end

During the 2025 offseason, the Broncos decided to acquire a veteran tight end for Bo Nix. They signed Evan Engram, who had been released by the Jacksonville Jaguars, to a two-year, $23 million contract.

Unfortunately, Engram did not make the impact Denver expected in his debut season. The veteran finished with 50 receptions for 461 yards and one touchdown, which is why strengthening the position with Sadiq would make a lot of sense.
