According to Fox Sports‘ Deesha Thosar, Cashman believes Boone remains firmly in a good spot as he navigates the final year of his contract. “I think Boone’s a really good manager,” Cashman told Thosar. “We’re here for a reason. There are a lot of reasons behind that, and certainly he’s part of that.”

Despite high expectations entering this postseason, Boone’s job security remains under intense scrutiny from a demanding fan base restless for a return to the top of the baseball world.

As Boone manages through a crucial ALDS, every roster decision and bullpen move carries immense weight for a franchise desperate to end a 17-year World Series drought.

Aaron Boone’s track record in New York

Hired in 2018 to succeed Joe Girardi, Boone immediately set a high standard in the Bronx, guiding the Yankees to back-to-back 100-win seasons in his first two years and securing three American League East division titles during his tenure.

Yet despite maintaining an elite regular-season winning percentage, Boone’s tenure has consistently been judged against the franchise’s standard of “championship or bust.” October has frequently brought heartbreak, highlighted by painful playoff exits at the hands of rivals like the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox, as well as a low point in 2023 when New York missed the postseason altogether.

Still, by leading the Yankees back to the World Series, Boone answered lingering questions about his ability to manage deep into October. His legacy in the Bronx remains that of a modern manager who built a consistent regular-season powerhouse while bearing the immense burden of trying to deliver the franchise’s 28th World Series championship.

Key takeaways

• Brian Cashman gave Aaron Boone a vote of confidence heading into October.
• Hired in 2018, Boone led the Yankees to back-to-back 100-win seasons.
• The manager led New York back to the World Series during his tenure.

Although the true test will come when the Yankees play the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS next, the way the squad in The Bronx has been assembled clearly didn’t go unnoticed by Cole, who praised Cashman and the Yankees’ brass after the 2-0 series win over the Red Sox.

“You’ve got to go out and buy the tools. The roster looks really good at this point. We’re very competitive, and we have a lot of different ways that we can beat you. A lot of credit goes to a lot of people in this building,” Cole stated, via Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

NY Yankees’ lineup depth proves decisive

It’s a new day in New York, more specifically in The Bronx. Indeed, the Yankees would love to have Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton back at the plate, but they have figured things out even without those two power bats.

New York is no longer a home-run-dependent creature in the MLB Playoffs. The Yankees are now a depth monster, ready to drown out opponents with lengthy, grueling innings, especially when playing at home at Yankee Stadium.

Yankees’ perfect 6th inning in Game 2

It remains to be seen how this strategy stacks up against the AL East-winning Rays, but it wreaked havoc against the Red Sox. The bottom of the sixth inning in Game 2 was Aaron Boone’s team’s magnum opus so far in the postseason. The Yankees made the most of every single thing the Red Sox gave them.

A wild pitch? Spencer Jones would run his way to first. Another bad throw, and he stole two bases, setting up shop at third. From there on, the Yankees’ batters simply kept the base hits coming until it was Cody Bellinger’s turn at the plate.

The Red Sox picked their poison: They intentionally walked Ben Rice to first base. Bellinger needed just one changeup from Garrett Whitlock to decipher the code. On the second pitch, he went yard, calling game in the process as New York jumped to a game-sealing, series-ending 8-1 lead.

NY Yankees are for real in 2026 postseason

It was the perfect demonstration of how the entire lineup can come together to decide postseason games for the Pinstripers. If they could, the Yankees would hang it up on a wall at Yankee Stadium, but they don’t do that in The Bronx.

All they care about is winning the World Series, and this Yankees team, with a different recipe from years past, confirmed it can be a serious contender for the Commissioner’s Trophy in 2026. And that’s even without Judge.

Lastly, Brian Cashman, who’s been through the wringer and at the receiving end of fans’ criticism time and again, deserves credit. It’s still early for victory laps, but Cole’s shoutout to the front office’s work was well deserved.

Key takeaways

• Brian Cashman received praise from Gerrit Cole after New York eliminated Boston.
• The Yankees beat the Red Sox 2-0 in the AL Wild Card series.
• Cody Bellinger hit a game-sealing home run in the sixth inning of Game 2.

According to Pinstripes Nation, high-ranking personnel inside the franchise are divided on whether Cashman should remain at the helm of baseball operations, after 28 years.

The report comes on the heels of insights from the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, who revealed last month that Cashman isn’t expected to leave the organization despite his contract expiring at the end of next season.

While the front office faces scrutiny, the Yankees remain fully focused on their immediate championship window. Manager Aaron Boone anticipates a major boost with superstar outfielder Aaron Judge making strong progress in his rehab program as the club pushes down the stretch.

How does the Yankees’ front-office decision-making process work?

The hiring and retention of a General Manager inside the Yankees organization does not involve a democratic vote among front-office executives, players, or shareholders. Instead, the general manager position operates under a traditional top-down corporate hierarchy dictated entirely by ownership.

As the Managing General Partner of the team and Chairman of Yankee Global Enterprises, Hal Steinbrenner holds final say on all matters concerning who leads the club’s baseball operations.

Key career highlights of Brian Cashman’s renure

Cashman’s historic run as General Manager of the Yankees is defined by immediate championship glory and unmatched modern consistency. Taking the reins in 1998 at just 30 years old, Cashman captured World Series titles in each of his first three seasons, becoming the only GM in Major League Baseball history to accomplish that feat.

Over his nearly three decades guiding baseball operations, he has overseen four World Series titles (1998, 1999, 2000, 2009) and six American League pennants, anchoring a modern dynasty while maintaining an unprecedented streak of 29 consecutive winning seasons without a single sub-.500 finish.

To clear up any doubts, Cashman told reporters that the Yankees still have more than enough talent to keep playing as well as they have done so far. “We’ve got a good club regardless. It’s obviously not as good without Aaron Judge, but still good enough,“ he said.

It makes sense for Cashman to speak to the media that way, but everyone knows the team takes a hit with several key players injured and missing extended time. One of the bats he specifically addressed was Giancarlo Stanton, noting that “he’s been missed” in the lineup.

Cashman has no estimated timeline for Judge’s return

Not even Cashman has a definitive date for when Judge can return to action. “We’re intentionally trying to not put out any guesstimate, because that’s what it would be, is a guesstimate,” Cashman explained. “We just have to let the thing heal and then after that, we can map out a runway.”

Neither Judge nor Aaron Boone have provided an estimated return date, but the NY Yankees must keep moving forward without him in the upcoming weeks as they look to reclaim the top spot in the AL East. Things still look incredibly promising for a postseason run, as they hold a strong 37-25 record and sit just 0.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays.

NY Yankees built to weather the storm without Judge

Things shouldn’t get too complicated for the Yankees while Judge takes the necessary time to heal. Cashman made it clear that Judge’s place in right field is secure, ensuring the front office isn’t looking to permanently replace him at the trade deadline. “We’ve just got to hold the fort, hold that spot nice and warm for him when he returns,“ he stated.

Seeing how Ben Rice has stepped up while Judge and other teammates are sidelined provides a lot of optimism. Rice is currently batting .300, a clear signal that the team can maintain its offensive rhythm. Additionally, veteran Paul Goldschmidt has been solid at the plate, turning in a steady .276 average.

The main threat to the Yankees’ season would be additional injuries. Facing critical upcoming series against teams with dominant pitching rotations means missing their best bats will be an obstacle, and lower-standing teams will certainly look to take advantage of a shorthanded lineup.

Speaking to the New York Post, Cashman explained that the decision was based more on Caballero’s recent performance than on anything Volpe had done wrong. “Well, like anything else, we’re paid to make very difficult decisions. I think this year’s New York Yankee team is a lot deeper, we have a lot more choices, and [Jose] Caballero has emerged with his play,” Cashman said.

Cashman also made it clear that the Yankees still believe in Volpe’s long-term value. “It wasn’t anything that Anthony Volpe was doing wrong; it was what [Caballero] was doing that led to that decision,” Cashman added. “Stay tuned, it’s a long year. We’re excited that we have Anthony Volpe, we’re excited that we have Cabby, we’re excited about all of the different talented players that we have.”

Volpe’s situation reflects Yankees’ roster depth

The Yankees have continued winning games while receiving strong production from Caballero, who has taken advantage of his opportunity at shortstop. His defense, energy on the bases, and improved offense have helped New York maintain momentum during the first month of the season, even as Aaron Judge reacted to te Volpe demotion and the team adjusted to unexpected changes.

That success made the decision more complicated for the Yankees’ front office. Volpe, once viewed as the unquestioned shortstop of the future, now finds himself needing everyday reps in Triple-A instead of sitting on the bench in the majors.

Cashman avoided giving a direct answer when asked whether Volpe could begin playing other defensive positions in Scranton. However, he confirmed that the former Gold Glove winner is currently focused on shortstop. “Right now, he’s playing shortstop every day,” Cashman said.

Yankees still view Volpe as part of their future

Despite the demotion, the Yankees continue to view Volpe as an important part of the organization moving forward. The former first-round pick quickly rose through New York’s farm system before becoming the club’s starting shortstop in 2023.

Manager Aaron Boone and the Yankees consistently supported Volpe through offensive struggles over the past several seasons, but Caballero’s emergence created a situation where the team prioritized current production during a season in which they are contending for another World Series run.

Volpe could still return to the Bronx later this year. Injuries, roster changes, and performance swings often reshape opportunities throughout a long MLB season. For now, though, the Yankees believe regular playing time in Triple-A is the best path for his development.

In October, the club dismissed international scouting director Danny Rowland. The move came amid growing criticism of the Yankees’ results in the international market, and it was followed by the departure of several young prospects, including Dominican infielder Wandy Asigen, who ultimately signed elsewhere.

In a recent interview with The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty, general manager Brian Cashman publicly backed Rowland’s replacement, explaining why he believes newly promoted director Mario Garza is the right person to guide the department forward.

“He’s an amazing human being,” Cashman said. “Connect-ability is a really high character trait for him. So he’s a great baseball guy that has great personal skills. He is a great evaluator of talent.”

Cashman also emphasized Garza’s familiarity with the organization’s infrastructure. “He already knows all the personnel that we want to have. You want evaluation. You want firehoses connecting to performance science and analytics. That will give him a head start as we try to relaunch that department and move forward,” Cashman added.

A chance to make an impact

For Garza, the role represents both a challenge and an opportunity. The Yankees have not won a World Series during his 16 years with the organization, something he openly acknowledged.

“I’ve been here 16 years, and that hasn’t happened,” Garza said, referring to winning a championship. “I think I have an opportunity to impact the organization in this area, and I think my skills line up for it.”

“I would concede it’s in his best interest to be getting everyday reps. We’ll just have to wait and see how the spring shakes out, who’s standing and then we’ll make the appropriate decisions when we have our meetings close to the end of camp,” Cashman said.

What Cashman is essentially saying is that Dominguez needs more plate appearances. With the Yankees’ current roster construction, it is highly unlikely he would get the consistent opportunities he needs at the major-league level. Triple-A could provide that rhythm at the plate, although it remains unclear whether he would spend the entire season away from the majors.

Dominguez the fourth outfielder

It is worth noting that Domínguez does not have a locked-in role in the Yankees’ outfield. Trent Grisham, who recently signed a new $22 million contract, appears to have a secure spot. That makes it unlikely Domínguez would receive just two or three reps per week in the majors.

“I think the ‘Jasson Dominguez can’t field’ narrative is lazy. We know he can’t field in left, but that’s not his NATURAL POSITION. He needs to be put in his proper position to make an evaluation on his true talent level. Until then, we’ll never know,” Brandon Furtado of What’s the Scoop (@brandonfurtado8) wrote on X.

Cashman was reluctant to send Domínguez to Triple-A last season, but the situation is different now, even though no final decision has been made. Last season, Domínguez hit .257, his second-best year so far with the Yankees, appearing in 123 games with 429 plate appearances.

When Grisham agreed to a one-year, $22.025 million deal, Cashman welcomed the certainty, and the Yankees gained stability in the outfield as the free‑agent market grew increasingly unpredictable.

“At this point, that $22 million looks like a bargain, the way the free-agent market got away from everybody,” Cashman said on SiriusXM’s MLB Network Radio. “We’re really happy he chose to stay. Hopefully, he can keep building on last year’s performance.”

Can Grisham repeat his breakout?

Grisham, 29, posted career highs in 2025 with 34 home runs, 116 hits, 74 RBIs, and a .235/.348/.464 slash line. His resurgence followed a difficult 2024, when he batted .190/.290/.385 while adjusting to a part-time role after being acquired from the San Diego Padres.

“I like when I can get my mind to this level,” Grisham said during the season according to MLB.com. “It’s a lot of fun to learn from that and produce on a nightly basis. It’s what I’ve always dreamed about.”

Yankees’ outfield depth

Cashman noted the team’s confidence in Grisham’s defense, despite a slight dip in 2025 due to a left hamstring injury. Manager Aaron Boone believes the outfielder could return to Gold Glove form with health and consistency.

With Cody Bellinger signed to a five-year deal and Aaron Judge in the lineup, playing time for young outfielders like Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones may be limited. “Injuries or lineup changes can open spots,” Cashman said. “We have a lot of depth, but opportunities are there if guys can step in.”

During a media session last week, Cashman highlighted several prospects who are “hungry and eager” for opportunities at spring training. “We have some emerging, talented players from our system,” he said. “And there might also be more imports like [Angel Chivili]. Stay tuned.”

Here are the players Cashman expects to make a significant impact next season:

• Elmer Rodriguez
• Carlos Lagrange
• Angel Chivili
• Cade Winquest
• Ben Hess

These prospects, combined with established stars like Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge, position the Yankees for a potentially promising season, offering hope to their passionate fanbase.

Is there room for Cashman’s ‘young pups’ in the projected lineup?

While Cashman has expressed significant interest in these promising players, whether they will make the roster for the 2026 MLB season remains uncertain. However, positive performances during spring training could earn them spots on the 40-man roster. Here’s a glimpse of how they could fit in:

• Projected 2026 rotation (Early season)
  • Max Fried (major offseason addition)
  • Luis Gil
  • Ryan Weathers
  • Cam Schlittler
  • Cade Winquest (Rule 5 status secures his spot)
  • Next in line: Elmer Rodriguez & Ben Hess
• Projected 2026 Bullpen (Early season)
  • High-Leverage: Carlos Lagrange (the “100-mph” weapon)
  • Middle Relief: Angel Chivili, Jake Bird, Will Warren
  • Long Relief: Cade Winquest (if not starting)

As this scenario unfolds, the Yankees eagerly anticipate whether their ‘young pups’ will rise to the challenge and fill potential voids in the rotation and bullpen by 2026. The Yankees also have a strategy focused at easing the load on key players like Bellinger in the coming season.

At the center of that challenge sits the Los Angeles Dodgers, a franchise that has reshaped its roster with high-impact signings and championship continuity. With Dodgers payroll towering and recent additions stacking the lineup, baseball observers have increasingly framed Los Angeles as the team to beat.

In a recent conversation with NJ.com’s Bob Klapisch, Cashman offered an update on the Yankees’ mindset, emphasizing that New York’s goals are both traditional and aspirational — winning the division and ultimately, finding ways to beat any opponent on the field.

What is the Yankees’ plan to bridge the gap with the Dodgers?

“The goal is to find a way,” Cashman said when asked if the current Yankees roster could overcome a powerhouse like Los Angeles. “First, we have to win the East. Then we have to win the pennant, neither of which happened last year. That’s our only focus.”

Does Los Angeles’ spending give it an edge?

When pressed on the Dodgers’ enormous luxury tax payroll — highlighted by premium free-agent signings this offseason — Cashman reminded listeners that spending is just one part of the equation. “They’re playing by the rules,” he said. “So we just have to find a way to beat them on the field.”

Looking back on 2025, the Yankees never again faced the Dodgers after dropping the World Series, instead losing ground to AL rivals like the Blue Jays and Red Sox. As the calendar turns toward 2026, Cashman’s comments suggest that New York’s front office is intent on both incremental improvement and larger competitive ambitions.

In the weeks ahead, spring training and early season matchups will serve as the first barometer of how far Cashman’s plan has brought the Yankees toward bridging the gap with the Dodgers and other MLB contenders.

When questioned about the current roster, Cashman expressed satisfaction with the team’s composition but sent an intriguing message to the fans: “Stay tuned for more additions to the roster.” He also signaled confidence in some prospects stepping up to enhance the team, a sentiment shared by Gary Phillips of NYND.

Having made significant moves in the offseason market, including the acquisition of Bo Bichette, the Yankees remain vigilant in exploring further roster enhancements. Meanwhile, several players are eager to don the Yankees pinstripes.

As the WBC approaches, players like Cody Bellinger have announced their participation with Team USA for the tournament. With spring training in full swing, the anticipation is palpable regarding the potential roster emerging from these matchups.

Cashman’s insights on the Yankees’ roster this season

Reflecting on the transition from last season to the upcoming one, Yankees GM shared his insights on the roster and the strategies needed to mold a championship-caliber team amid mounting pressure.

“I disagree it’s the same team running it back. I’ve been openly willing to challenge anybody that we don’t have a championship-caliber roster,” Cashman stated during an SNY interview.

He was emphatic in asserting the changes from last year’s lineup. “It’s not the same roster. We have players returning from IL. We added weapons at the deadline. We have young talents climbing the ranks. We’ve secured big arms, one from Colorado and another from the Marlins,” Cashman noted.
