The New York Yankees missed out on Luis Arraez, who is joining forces with Bryce Harper on the Philadelphia Phillies.

The MLB trade deadline day saw the New York Yankees miss out on three-time batting champion Luis Arraez, who’s joining the Philadelphia Phillies via trade from the San Francisco Giants. And even though the Arraez trade could prompt Bryce Harper to make a position change, the Phillies can still avoid moving the latter to the outfield.

A report by Matt Gelb, Andrew Baggarly and Charlotte Varnes for The Athletic suggests Arraez will play second base for the Phillies, which may explain why the Yankees couldn’t land the four-time All-Star.

The report claims that teams interested in Arraez were told about his desire to continue at second base, which already made the Yankees run from behind in the Arraez sweepstakes. With that position covered by Jazz Chisholm Jr., the Bronx Bombers couldn’t meet Arraez’s position demands.

The Phillies were aware of his intention to stay at second base and made the deal regardless. Now, they’re seemingly guaranteeing Arraez’s request and have different ways to do so, including options where Harper doesn’t move to the OF.

I’m hearing it’s a very very real possibility Bryce Harper will move to RF. Bryson Stott will move to third base. Alec Bohm will move to first base.

Source confirms the Phillies are trading for second baseman Luis Arraez pic.twitter.com/lr6qoKY82Q
— John Clark (@JClarkNBCS) August 3, 2026

How Phillies can adjust their lineup with Arraez at 2B

The first option, which includes Harper moving to the OF, would be with Bryson Stott playing third base, moving Alec Bohm to first base and having Harper on the right field.

However, per The Athletic, the Phillies could simply move Stott to third base and keep Harper at first base by trading Bohm before the deadline. Another option the Phillies have reportedly “discussed internally” is moving Stott to the outfield, with Harper and Bohm staying on the infield corners.

There are more ways than one for the Phillies to make room for Arraez at his favorite position. And even though it requires creativity, this situation makes sense. After all, we’re talking about the player who’s leading MLB with a .324 hitting average in 2026.

The Philadelphia Phillies made a blockbuster trade with the San Francisco Giants to land Luis Arraez, in a move that could lead Bryce Harper to change his position.

With the MLB trade deadline looming, the Philadelphia Phillies‘ front office stepped up by landing three-time batting champion Luis Arraez in a deal with the San Francisco Giants, reported by ESPN‘s Jeff Passan. This move is expected to see Bryce Harper make a change for the rest of the season.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post notes that the Phillies have too many infielders now, which is why a possible solution would be moving Harper to the outfield. The important part is that Harper is “thought to be willing” to make this change.

Currently second in the National League East at .527, the Phillies’ postseason aspirations are getting a huge boost with Arraez, and Harper would be doing the team a favor with such a move. However, the Phillies can still play Arraez at second base without necessarily moving Harper to the outfield.

Luis Arraez’s stats heading into Philadelphia

Arraez was one of the biggest names to watch heading into the MLB trade deadline. A four-time All Star, the left-handed infielder has established himself as the best at his job in 2026.

Bryce Harper brought his outfielder's glove on the last road trip, saying he was ready to move to the outfield, if needed.

He's expected to move to the outfield to make room for Luis Arraez in the infield.

Hitting .324 with four homers, 47 RBI and an .801 OPS this season; Arraez is also a two-time Silver Slugger Award-winner with a career batting average of .318, boasting 40 home runs and 348 RBIs. The numbers speak for themselves as the Phillies’ rotation just got a massive upgrade.

Arraez’s contract arriving in Philly

Arraez, who turns 30 in April 2027, is arriving in Philly under the $12 million, one-year deal he signed with the Giants in February. Only time will tell us whether his performance with the Phillies earns him a new paycheck in the City of the Brotherly Love. If not, he will hit free agency next year.

Full terms of the Arraez trade to Phillies

Jayson Stark of The Athletic adds that, along with Arraez, the Phillies are landing right-reliever Caleb Kilian, whereas the Giants get prospects Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair in return.

The Philadelphia Phillies, led by Bryce Harper, are active in the market and would not rule out the arrival of Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets.

The MLB trade deadline is approaching, and teams are quickly looking to finalize key additions. One of them is the Philadelphia Phillies, who, according to a recent report from The Athletic’s Matt Gelb, are closely monitoring New York Mets pitcher Freddy Peralta as a potential addition to support Bryce Harper in the short term.

“Over the weekend, they had a scout in New York who saw Freddy Peralta pitch — along with other potential Mets targets,” Gelb revealed. Additionally, the reporter noted that the Phillies are also closely monitoring Clay Holmes’ rehabilitation process.

Philadelphia sit behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, but their pitching inconsistencies have prevented them from achieving even better results. Perhaps, the potential arrival of Freddy Peralta could be a solution to that issue.

Harper reacts to potential additions to the team

Bryce Harper continues to be the heart and soul of this team, recording a .252 batting average, 22 home runs, 63 RBIs, and an .850 OPS. However, he understands that certain reinforcements are needed.

Bryce Harper #3 of the Philadelphia Phillies waves at fans before a game.

“Organizationally, I haven’t talked to anybody about it,” he said to Matt Gelb, when asked about the trade deadline. “So I don’t know. I mean, I think everybody knows kind of what we need, right? I mean everybody in here knows what we want.

“Everybody in baseball kind of knows what we need. So there’s players out there that are available, and I think we have a good opportunity to go get the guys we need. If that’s the bullpen, if that’s in our lineup, if that’s a starting pitcher. You guys know what our five spot’s looked like all year. I think we’re 14 and something …”

Peralta could be the key piece for the Phillies

Adding Freddy Peralta would give the Phillies a battle-tested right-hander capable of immediately locking down the back of their rotation for a late-season playoff push. Though his raw numbers with the Mets this season—a 5–8 record, 4.05+ ERA, and 104 strikeouts across 20 starts—don’t fully reflect his ceiling, Peralta’s raw swing-and-miss ability remains top-tier.

His knack for racking up strikeouts would provide high-upside depth behind Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola, giving Philadelphia the reliable, high-octane starter they desperately need down the stretch.

Freddy Peralta #51 of the New York Mets.

A few days until the trade deadline

The 2026 MLB trade deadline is set for Monday, August 3, at 6:00 p.m. ET. It will be until then that teams must finalize their transactions to strengthen their rosters for the final stretch of the season and, eventually, the playoffs.

Bryce Harper gave his take on why the Mets are struggling so much.

Bryce Harper recently broke down why the New York Mets have fallen off so hard, saying out loud what a lot of people are already thinking: losing Pete Alonso and other key players completely torpedoed the team’s future. The 2026 season has spiraled into a nightmare, one so bad they even had to fire manager Carlos Mendoza.

Speaking on a podcast with Mookie Betts, Harper admitted the Mets used to be a legit threat to the Phillies back when Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo were in the lineup. But once they packed their bags, Harper and Philly stopped seeing New York as a dangerous opponent, especially with how this 2026 season is unfolding.

Without trying to throw shade, Harper’s take points to a clear reality: the team’s downfall stems directly from losing those core guys. According to him, when they left, they took a chunk of the Mets’ identity with them, a point plenty of analysts have brought up while blasting the New York front office for its recent roster moves.

Who is Philadelphia’s biggest rival right now?

Before bringing up the Mets, Harper noted that the Phillies have had some grueling battles with the Atlanta Braves, making them Philly’s toughest on-field opponent at the moment. Still, Harper acknowledged that Atlanta isn’t quite a traditional rival in the classic sense, a title that historically belongs to New York.

On a recent podcast, Mookie Betts and Bryce Harper broke down how the #Mets fell apart after losing their identity. 👀 Harper said the Mets are the Phillies’ biggest rival at their best, and knew Atlanta’s pitching would improve after the Mets let Jeremy Hefner walk. pic.twitter.com/mS2MjKHGlO
— NYM News (@NYM_News) July 24, 2026

With the Mets in total freefall, Philadelphia and the rest of the division are obviously reaping the benefits. But teams better stay on their toes: New York could pull off a turn-around at any moment, if not now, then certainly by next season.

Who has the upper hand in the Mets–Phillies series?

Philadelphia holds the all-time edge with a 567–539 record over New York, including a 566–536 lead in regular-season matchups. However, the Mets own the postseason advantage with a 3–1 series lead, courtesy of their 2024 NLDS victory. New York also holds the most recent blow-out win between the two, a 24–4 rout in 2018, though it still falls short of the Phillies’ franchise-record 26–7 beatdown of the Mets back in 1985.

Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh are fueling a frenzy across the Philadelphia Phillies' fanbase, as the duo continues to put up stellar numbers during a dominant regular-season stretch.
Since Don Mattingly took the managerial reins, the Philadelphia Phillies have rediscovered their identity. In the midst of this midseason turnaround, Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh have emerged as the catalysts driving the franchise’s resurgence.

The Phillies have played eight games under Mattingly’s leadership, and both stars have flourished. Here is a look at the production from the duo during the Mattingly era:

Breaking down the Phillies’ last eight matchups

To understand the full impact of Harper and Marsh during Mattingly’s tenure, let’s look at the game-by-game results and how these two stars contributed to the Phillies’ recent hot streak:

Bryce Harper reacted to the Phillies’ 6-1 surge under interim manager Don Mattingly, highlighting renewed energy and momentum as Philadelphia looks to rebound from its slow start.
The Philadelphia Phillies appear to be finding momentum following a difficult start to the 2026 season, with Bryce Harper offering insight into the team’s mindset after a strong 6-1 run under interim manager Don Mattingly, who recently paid a heartfelt tribute to John Sterling. Philadelphia now sits at 15-20, showing signs of recovery after early inconsistency.

Speaking to MLB.com, Harper acknowledged the uncertainty that surrounded the team before the managerial change. “I think we were all just waiting for that ball to drop… If Topper was going to get fired or he wasn’t… we needed to get over this hump,” he said. “April’s behind us… we’ve got to step forward… just stack the days and be where we want to be at the end.”

The Phillies’ improved play has been evident on both sides of the ball, with timely hitting and stronger pitching helping stabilize a roster that struggled through the opening weeks of the season.

Harper, Nola lead Phillies resurgence on the field

Harper has continued to be a key contributor during this stretch, including a solo home run that proved decisive in a 1-0 win over the Miami Marlins. Through the 2026 season, he is batting .271 with seven home runs, 20 RBIs, and an .881 OPS, reinforcing his role as the centerpiece of the offense.

Don Mattingly, interim manager for the Phillies, walks off the field. Emilee Chinn/Getty Images

On the mound, Aaron Nola delivered a strong performance in his first start since the managerial shift, tossing six scoreless innings to secure the series win. His outing highlighted the pitching staff’s improvement as the team begins to find more consistency.

Phillies aiming to build momentum after early struggles

Philadelphia’s recent 6-1 stretch under Mattingly marks a significant shift after a slow start, suggesting the team may be turning a corner. The focus now is on maintaining that level of play and continuing to build momentum as the season progresses.

For Harper and the Phillies, the message is clear: consistency and daily improvement will determine whether this resurgence becomes a sustained push toward contention.

Bryce Harper reacted as the Philadelphia Phillies’ losing streak reaches 10 games, with frustration mounting.
The Philadelphia Phillies are struggling through a 10-game losing streak that has exposed issues across both offense and pitching, turning what was expected to be a competitive stretch into a prolonged slump. Veteran leader Bryce Harper has become one of the key voices in a clubhouse, while former Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos recently reflected on his Phillies exit.

After another defeat, Harper addressed the situation with an extended and honest reflection. “It’s not great. Obviously, the spot where we want to be. Said it multiple times, it’s like beating a dead horse, man. I mean, we can all say the same thing every single day. Nobody wants to hear it. So we just got to win. I mean, plain and simple so we understand we lost tonight.”

He also added,“Understand that we had a great day yesterday. All those things, right? It doesn’t matter until you win a game. So just got to continue to fight and come in tomorrow and start tomorrow.” The comments were reported by NBC Sports Philadelphia.

The Phillies are now one loss away from tying their longest losing streak since 1999, according to MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki, when they dropped 11 straight games. It is also only the fifth time since 1972 that the franchise has reached a 10-game skid, underscoring the rarity of the current collapse.

Late-game issues continue to hurt Philadelphia

Philadelphia’s recent struggles have been driven by an inability to sustain production throughout games. While moments of offense have surfaced, they have not been enough to offset late‑game breakdowns or inconsistent pitching performances, a trend reflected in their 8–18 record and 10.5‑game deficit in the 2026 NL East standings.

Zack Wheeler return brings hope

The Phillies are expected to welcome back ace Zack Wheeler, who is recovering from shoulder surgery. His return is viewed as a potential boost for a struggling rotation and a possible turning point as Philadelphia tries to stop the skid.

Bryce Harper voiced concern after another tough loss to the Chicago Cubs, as the Philadelphia Phillies’ early‑season struggles deepen and the team searches for answers.
The Philadelphia Phillies continue to spiral early in the season, and Bryce Harper did not shy away from addressing the team’s growing concerns following a 5-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. The defeat extended Philadelphia’s losing streak and reinforced a troubling trend that is quickly defining its campaign.

After the game, Harper delivered a candid assessment of where the team stands. “Yeah, I mean, it’s not where you want to be, obviously. It’s not where we thought we were going to be starting the season. But we can’t really worry about that. We’ve got to flush things as quick as possible and get into tomorrow—that’s part of the game,” he said, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia on X.

The Phillies now sit at 8-14, having dropped six straight and seven of their last eight. They’ve been outscored 42‑10 during that stretch, exposing issues across the roster. Chicago controlled this matchup from the start, building a lead that never seemed in doubt, even as players like Kyle Schwarber continue to project confidence about where the team can go.

Phillies’ inconsistency continues to show on both sides of the ball

Aaron Nola’s outing reflected the broader struggles within the rotation, as the right-hander allowed five earned runs over 4 1/3 innings. The game turned quickly in the second inning when Dansby Swanson delivered a three-run home run, creating an early gap the Phillies never closed.

"We gotta be better on both sides of the ball."@WapnerNewman pic.twitter.com/PIvpV1nTZ1
— NBC Sports Philadelphia (@NBCSPhilly) April 21, 2026

Offensively, Philadelphia managed just one run despite recording six hits. Harper acknowledged that recent results have not always matched the quality of contact. “I think we’ve had that pretty lately. I think a couple guys here and there have had some pretty hard-hit balls the last couple days, and they just haven’t fallen, but that’s part of the game,” he added.

Harper emphasizes need for immediate improvement as pressure builds

While some elements may come down to timing and luck, Harper made it clear that execution must improve across the board. “We’ve got to win. We’ve got to be better on both sides of the ball. Just got to win games,” he said, underscoring the urgency inside the clubhouse.

The Cubs, meanwhile, received a strong performance from Colin Rea, who threw 6 2/3 innings of one-run baseball while keeping the Phillies’ lineup off balance. Combined with solid defense, Chicago maintained control throughout the game.

For Philadelphia, the path forward centers on adjustments and accountability. With the standings beginning to take shape, Harper’s message reflects a team aware that time is becoming a factor, and that turning things around must happen sooner rather than later.

Bryce Harper reacted after another Philadelphia Phillies loss, rejecting early‑season excuses as Jesus Luzardo struggles and team issues continue.
The Philadelphia Phillies are still searching for answers after an 11-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs, a game that highlighted ongoing struggles on both the mound and at the plate. While Jesus Luzardo’s rough outing raised concerns, it was Bryce Harper who delivered the clearest message about the team’s mindset.

“Obviously, it’s early in the season, but I don’t like that notion because I like to win games in April as much as I like to win games in September,” Harper said after the game, via MLB.com.

The loss dropped Philadelphia to 8-10 on the season, continuing a difficult stretch in which the team has struggled with consistency. Luzardo allowed nine runs over 5.1 innings, and the Phillies have now given up double‑digit runs in back‑to‑back games for the first time since August 2024, during a week that also included the Phillies making roster moves as part of broader adjustments.

Luzardo’s struggles raise concerns despite solid stuff

Luzardo’s numbers tell a frustrating story early in the season. He is now 1-3 with a 7.94 ERA through four starts, allowing 28 hits in just over 22 innings. Opposing hitters have been especially effective with runners on base, a trend the pitcher acknowledged after the game.

Jesús Luzardo #44 of the Phillies pitches during the sixth inning against the Cubs. Isaiah Vazquez/Getty Images

The left-hander insisted he is not tipping pitches, something that was previously identified as an issue during a rough stretch last season. Still, the results have not matched the quality of his pitches, leaving both the player and coaching staff searching for adjustments.

Harper sets the tone as Phillies look for response

Beyond the pitching concerns, the Phillies’ issues have extended into defense and situational execution. The team committed multiple errors during the series and has struggled to capitalize offensively, even as Harper continues to emphasize urgency.

With a series against the Atlanta Braves coming up, the Phillies will have a chance to reset. But as Harper made clear, improvement can’t depend on timing and has to show up on the field right away.

After delivering a standout performance at Oracle Park, Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper explained how his swing finally clicked during the big win over the San Francisco Giants.
Bryce Harper looked like the Harper fans know and expect, delivering a strong performance in the Philadelphia Phillies’ 6-4 comeback win over the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park on Monday.

“I feel like it’s been good,” Harper said, according to MLB.com. “I feel good. I’ve just got to keep plugging away and keep having good at-bats.”

Harper went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs, and a walk. He started with a two-out double in the first inning, scored on a double off the right-field wall in the fifth, and tied the game with a two-run single in the seventh. This helped Philadelphia win their first series-opening game in San Francisco since 2014.

Harper’s approach at the plate

Harper began the season slowly, batting just .139 in his first nine games. Manager Rob Thomson said the team never doubted him. “I don’t think he really worries about that. He knows he’s going to hit. We know he’s going to hit,” Thomson said.

Bryce Harper #3 of the Phillies drives in Justin Crawford with a double at Oracle Park. Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images

Philadelphia has also made small roster moves to reinforce depth early in the season, as the Phillies added Sergio Alcantara for infield depth after he became available

Monday was Harper’s first three-hit game since last August and his first three-RBI game since then. He also showed better discipline at the plate, seeing six pitches outside the strike zone without swinging at any.

Comfort at Oracle Park and team context

Harper has struggled at Oracle Park in the past, hitting just .182 with a .610 OPS in his first 37 games there. But in his last two visits, he’s gone 7-for-10 with five doubles and a home run. “Every time I come here, I feel very confident in my ability to play well,” Harper said.

Rookie Andrew Painter kept the Phillies in the game despite giving up four runs in four innings. Harper’s timely hitting made the difference, helping Philadelphia overcome early pitching struggles and proving he’s still one of baseball’s top hitters.

“Whenever you get down 2-0 it’s tough, but I thought Mac threw the ball great. He’s a special talent. He’s going to be a special talent for a long time. We’ve got a lot of great young guys in there that are going to play again on this team,” the Phillies star said.

Mark DeRosa’s squad came up just short in a 3–2 defeat against its opponent, narrowly missing the opportunity to secure a second title in the tournament.

McLean’s performance in the final

In the WBC 2026, Nolan McLean delivered a strong performance, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing only 2 runs on 4 hits.

For its part, Bryce Harper proved why he is the veteran leader of this squad, going 2-for-4. His most critical contribution came in the 6th inning when he launched a clutch solo home run to tie the game at 2-2, providing the emotional spark Team USA needed on the world’s biggest stage.

Team USA’s young talent

Led by rising stars like Nolan McLean and Roman Anthony, Team USA’s future looks incredibly bright. Alongside established young talents such as Bobby Witt Jr. and Paul Skenes, these players represent a new generation of versatile, high-velocity athletes ready to reclaim international dominance for the United States.

Looking ahead to what’s next

Looking ahead, Team USA faces two major challenges on the international stage. First is the highly anticipated return of baseball to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where they will compete for gold as the host nation.

Following that, focus shifts to the 2030 World Baseball Classic, as the tournament officially moves to a four-year cycle, cementing its status as the premier global showcase for the sport.
