Match Preview: What’s at stake?

Argentina vs Burkina Faso is part of a three-game home friendly schedule for Lionel Scaloni‘s team during the September-October FIFA window. Argentina first faced Bolivia in Cordoba on September 30 before returning to Buenos Aires to play Burkina Faso on October 3 and Benin on October 6. The AFA has officially confirmed the Monumental as the venue for both October matches.

The match is particularly interesting because Argentina are entering a new stage after the 2026 World Cup. Scaloni’s squad includes several established figures, but the coach is also testing younger options as the national team looks beyond the previous cycle.

The AFA has confirmed that Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul and Giovani Lo Celso will only join the squad for the October 6 match against Benin, meaning they will not be available against Burkina Faso.

That makes the Burkina Faso game an important opportunity for players such as Lautaro Martinez, Julian Alvarez, Nico Paz, Franco Mastantuono and Thiago Almada to take on greater responsibility. Scaloni has also called up several players from the Argentine domestic league, including Nicolas Otamendi and Santiago Beltran.

Burkina Faso arrive as a competitive African opponent and are currently ranked 62nd in the FIFA rankings, according to TyC Sports. The Stallions have several players based in European leagues, giving Argentina a useful test against a team with a different playing style and physical profile.

What time is the Argentina vs Burkina Faso match?

The Argentina vs Burkina Faso match kicks off on Saturday, October 3, at 8:00 PM ET. The scheduled kickoff is 5:00 PM in Argentina, with the Monumental Stadium hosting the second Argentina friendly of the window.

• Eastern Time: 8:00 PM
• Central Time: 7:00 PM
• Mountain Time: 6:00 PM
• Pacific Time: 5:00 PM

Per Infobae, the plane scheduled to transport the African squad from Morocco to Buenos Aires has not yet taken off. The original plan called for them to arrive in Argentina on the night of Tuesday, September 29, yet three days later, Burkina Faso still have not even departed Morocco.

Behind-the-scenes details state that the African squad had agreed on a set of conditions to be provided by the AFA. However, those conditions ultimately failed to materialize. Faced with this situation, the players decided to delay their trip until the agreed-upon terms were met.

Burkina Faso made a statement

The Burkina Faso Football Federation (FBF) issued a statement shortly after midday on Friday (Argentina time). “The Burkina Faso Football Federation wishes to inform the general public… about the situation currently facing the Burkina Faso delegation in Morocco regarding their trip to Buenos Aires for the international friendly match between Argentina and Burkina Faso.

The national team’s travel plans were disrupted after the company chartering the aircraft cancelled—without prior notice—the flight originally scheduled for September 30. This cancellation necessitated a reorganization of the delegation’s itinerary,” they stated.

Was the Burkina Faso’s game Lionel Messi’s farewell?

Burkina Faso was the second-to-last game in this FIFA international window. Thankfully for Argentina, Messi’s last game with the ‘Albiceleste‘ is scheduled to be on October, 6 vs. Benin.

Hence, Messi’s farewell isn’t in actual jeopardy. In that regard, no one should be sweating that part. However, organizationally, AFA would be in deep trouble to be able to refund all the fans attending the game against Burkina Faso, if it so happens that the game doesn’t take place.

Key takeaways

• Burkina Faso’s charter flight from Morocco to Buenos Aires was canceled, leaving the squad stranded.
• The visiting team delayed travel due to unfulfilled financial and organizational conditions from AFA.
• Lionel Messi’s international farewell remains on track for the October 6 match against Benin.

Belgium were one of the first qualified to the World Cup. They did not have a very complicated group, although it is true that rivals such as Wales or the Czech Republic could present some complication. However, the Belgian team has not had a strong friction and will seek to have it from now on thinking about Qatar.

Burkina Faso did some good Qualifiers finishing second in their group, however, Algeria (one of the strongest teams on the African Continent) were ultimately the winners of that group. It’s been a few years now that the Burkinabe have been having good performances both in the AFCON and in the Qualifiers, and thinking about future commitments, this game against one of the best European teams could be very useful.

Burkina Faso had a great participation in this Africa Cup of Nations. Without being one of the main candidates, they were able to reach the semifinals of the tournament. Sadly for them, in semifinals they had to face one of the best in the tournament (and the favorites to be champions): Senegal, who beat them 3-1. Now they will seek to finish the tournament in the best way winning the third place.

On the local side, they were one of the main candidates to win this AFCON, and even more so with the level shown by Vincent Aboubakar and Ekambi, who scored 11 goals between them. However, in the semi-finals they were unable to score against Egypt, and after drawing 0-0 in the 90 minutes and extra time, the Cameroonians were eliminated on penalties. That is why they will now try to keep this third place as a consolation prize.

Burkina Faso performed well in the tournament despite a tough win against Gabon in the Round of 16 that ended in a penalty shoot-out. But after that game Burkina Faso were more consistent in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

Cameroon could not avoid defeat against Egypt in a penalty shoot-out, but the team’s defense was lethal during the game against them. Cameroon were big favorites to win the cup as a host team, from the round of 16 they showed offensive power like no other nation.

Burkina Faso‘s path to the semi-finals has not been easy. In the group stage they finished second only for having scored one more goal than Cape Verde. Their rival in the round of 16 was Gabon, whom they eliminated on penalties. Then in the quarterfinals they beat Tunisia 1-0. Reaching this stage for the Burkinabe was not easy at all, but they have shown that they have the conditions to complicate superior rivals.

On Senegal’s side, reaching the semi-finals was not as difficult as it was for the Burkinabe, although that is not to say that they had it easy. They were first in the group stage with 5 points (1 win and two draws), then in the round of 16 they beat Cape Verde 2-0, and Equatorial Guinea 3-1 in the quarterfinals. The Senegalese are favorites to win this game, but they shouldn’t be overconfident.

Burkina Faso had a difficult group stage. They started with a 2-1 loss to Cameroon, but then the victory against Cape Verde and the draw against Ethiopia allowed them to take second place in Group A and advance to the round of 16. With great players such as Traore and Tapsoba, they are favorites to win this game.

In the case of Gabon, they finished second in their group after beating Comoros 1-0 and drawing 1-1 with Ghana and 2-2 with Morocco. For this African Cup of Nations, they suffered the sensitive absence of Aubameyang, who despite being ready to play for his country after recovering from COVID-19, had heart problems detected and therefore decided not to play. Without him, Gabon will of course be a less strong team, but they still hope to surprise Burkina Faso.
