Following their impressive performances at Wimbledon, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Novak Djokovic have announced their withdrawals from the upcoming Canadian Open.
The tennis world was taken by surprise on Sunday when three of the ATP circuit’s top players, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Novak Djokovic, announced their withdrawal from the Canadian Open 2025. The trio made their decision public, citing their absence from the tournament scheduled for the end of July.

The Canadian Open is traditionally a pivotal event for ATP players seeking to amass valuable ranking points. However, for Alcaraz, Sinner, and Djokovic, the immediate focus appears to be on preparing for future titles and managing their physical and mental resources wisely as they look ahead to subsequent events on the circuit.

Wimbledon proved to be a grueling tournament for many competitors. The British weather and the high level of play exhibited throughout the event provide context for fans questioning why three of the four Wimbledon finalists have opted out of the Toronto competition this year.

Why Alcaraz, Djokovic and Sinner withdrew from the tournament?

According to a report by Marca, Alcaraz’s withdrawal is influenced by his strategic view of the upcoming calendar, with the Cincinnati Open and the US Open looming large. Similarly, Djokovic and Sinner have chosen to rest, acknowledging the significant demands of their remarkable performances at Wimbledon and the challenges that lie ahead.

The landscape without Alcaraz, Sinner, and Djokovic in Toronto

The Toronto tournament will proceed without three of the ATP circuit’s perennial favorites. This absence paves the way for potential new title contenders to emerge. Among the top candidates is Alexander Zverev, who could seize this opportunity to claim a title as the top seed in their absence.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/tennis/carlos-alcarazs-impressive-record-in-2025-challenged-by-world-no-20-after-swedish-open-win" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20250719_BUS_443879_carlos-alcaraz-roland-garros-1.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="Carlos Alcaraz has dominated a key stat this year, but the performance of World No. 20 at the Swedish Open is closing the gap.

Following his candid remarks about mental health concerns during Wimbledon, the German’s potential to deliver a standout performance is under spotlight, especially as he assumes the position of number one seed due to the withdrawals of Sinner and Alcaraz. Notable players such as Taylor Fritz and Lorenzo Musetti are also slated to compete in Toronto, adding further intrigue to the lineup.

Alcaraz reportedly eyes the world No. 1 ranking

With Sinner opting out of the Canadian Open 2025 to focus on competitions in the United States, Alcaraz is closely monitoring Sinner’s next moves as he also targets the world No. 1 position. The Spaniard’s keen interest in the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open suggests he is positioning himself for a strong finish to the season, potentially reaching the coveted top spot.

As reported by Marca, Alcaraz will trail Sinner by a mere 50 points in the world rankings following their absences at the Canadian Open. This narrow gap presents a promising opportunity for Alcaraz to claim the number one ranking, provided he outperforms his rivals in the upcoming Cincinnati Masters and US Open tournaments.

The absence of tennis legend Novak Djokovic from the upcoming Canadian Open 2023 has left fans and experts puzzled. After a closely contested Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz, where Djokovic narrowly missed his 24th Grand Slam title, the Serbian star has chosen to skip the prestigious ATP 1000 tournament in Toronto.

Djokovic’s decision to forgo the Toronto tournament has surprised many, given his history of success at the National Bank Open. With four championships to his name, Djokovic has been a dominant force on Canadian soil. However, he has not participated in the event since 2018, opting instead to focus on other critical tournaments and his overall physical well-being.

As Djokovic sets his sights on the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year, his choice to skip the Toronto Masters is strategic. The 36-year-old knows the importance of pacing himself and preserving his energy for the demanding hard-court season. The decision aims to ensure that Djokovic is at his best for the grand finale of the tennis calendar.

When Is Novak Djokovic’s Return?

Tennis Canada expressed disappointment at Djokovic’s absence from the Canadian Open, recognizing his immense talent. Tournament director Karl Hale shared, “We’re disappointed that Novak won’t be gracing us with his presence this year. He’s an exceptional player, and we know our fans were looking forward to watching him compete.”

Djokovic’s choice to skip the Toronto event aligns with his commitment to managing his schedule strategically. With the US Open being a defining moment in his career, Djokovic and his team are focused on optimizing his chances to reclaim the title and possibly secure a record-breaking 24th Grand Slam victory.

Djokovic enthusiasts need not wait too long to see him in action, as the Serbian tennis maestro has confirmed his participation in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Not only will he be competing in the singles event, but Djokovic will also team up Nikola Cacic to take on the doubles competition, providing fans with even more opportunities to witness his unparalleled skills.

The Spaniard was set to debuttomorrow at the Toronto Masters 2021 against Lloyd Harris, but he withdrew at last. Here, check out why Nadal won't be playing the tournament.
Rafael Nadal withdrew from the Toronto Masters 2021, one day before his scheduled match against Lloyd Harris, the same player that beat him one week before in Washington DC. The Spaniard was looking to prepare himself before the US Open, which starts on August 30, but now his participation is at stake.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion missed Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics in the summer to recover his body after playing the entire clay season, in which he lost against Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of Roland Garros.

However, now the World No. 4 is still struggling to be in shape for the last Grand Slam of the year. While he was able to play some matches in Washington DC, he is far away from his best level. And now Nadal had less margin to improve. Here, check out why he won’t be playing in Toronto.

Why did Rafael Nadal pull out of the Toronto Masters 2021?

Nadal has been struggling with a foot injury, as the Spaniard said last week in Washington, where he seemedto hadtrouble moving around the court in his last match against Harris. While Nadal said that his foot “was better,” that isn’t the case anymore.

“Of course, it is not a happy situation after all the success that I had here in Canada, not being able to play this year after missing a year,” Nadal said in ainterview to address his withdrawal. “It’s a tough one, but that’s how it is today,” he added.

The five-time Toronto Masters 2021 champion couldn’t renew the title he won in 2019, when he beat Daniil Medvedev at Montréal. Nadal now has to decide if he plays at the Cincinnati Open, which starts next week (August 14).
