The Cincinnati Reds moved Eugenio Suarez one step closer to returning by sending the veteran infielder on a rehab assignment, signaling progress in his recovery.
The Cincinnati Reds continue to deal with multiple injuries across their roster, but there is positive movement surrounding veteran infielder Eugenio Suarez, who has not played since April 22. The third baseman is now one step closer to returning after being sent to Triple-A Louisville on a rehab assignment, something the Reds also did recently with Jose Trevino as he continues his own recovery.

According to a team announcement shared on X, the Reds confirmed Suárez’s next step in his recovery. “The Reds today sent IF Eugenio Suarez to Triple-A Louisville on a rehab assignment,” the club posted.

The move suggests Suarez could be nearing a return to the major league roster, especially since position players can spend a maximum of 20 days on rehab assignments without being activated. His immediate placement at the Triple-A level also indicates he is progressing well in his recovery process.

Suarez is in his first season back with Cincinnati after previously playing for the club from 2015 to 2021. In 25 games this year, he is batting .231 with a .300 on-base percentage, along with three home runs, 11 RBIs, and 10 runs scored.

Eugenio Suarez begins a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville. Carmen Mandato/Getty Images

Suarez return could boost struggling Reds lineup

Cincinnati’s offense has struggled to find consistency this season, ranking near the bottom of the league in key categories. The Reds currently sit tied for 17th in runs scored, while also ranking 27th in batting average and 24th in on-base percentage.

The potential return of Suarez would provide an important boost to a lineup that has lacked production in key moments. His power and experience remain valuable assets as the team tries to stay competitive in the NL Central race.

Reds continue battling injuries while staying in contention

Injuries have been a major storyline for Cincinnati, with seven players currently on the injured list. Despite that, the Reds recently snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, improving their record to 25-24.

Cincinnati now sits 4.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the division standings as they prepare to close their series with Philadelphia before facing the St. Louis Cardinals.

Suarez’s rehab assignment now becomes one of the most closely watched developments for a Reds team hoping to stabilize both its roster and its playoff positioning in the weeks ahead.

Jose Caballero offered a promising update, noting his injury recovery is ahead of schedule. Meanwhile, Anthony Volpe is finally finding his rhythm at the plate, breaking out of his recent slump.
Jose Caballero’s 10-day IL stint cleared the way for Anthony Volpe to step into the starting lineup, but the New York Yankees suddenly have plenty of reason for optimism regarding their injured infielder. Caballero recently opened up about his recovery progress and targeted a specific date for his return to the active roster.

According to Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News, Caballero expects to be back on the field for the Yankees by Friday. “That’s my plan. That’s my goal,” Caballero said, via Phillips.

While the team has yet to officially activate him, Caballero appears locked in and ready to return. In his absence, Volpe has held down the position with the Yankees having reason to be optimistic about the young shortstop who has rapidly rediscovered his stride and is beginning to look like his elite self again.

In addition to Caballero’s impending return, the Yankees are reportedly considering accelerating Gerrit Cole’s highly anticipated season debut to help patch a heavily strained starting rotation. Between Cole’s timeline and the infield shuffle, manager Aaron Boone will have some major roster decisions to finalize in the coming days.

Jose Caballero, Jazz Chisholm Jr., JC Escarra & Spencer Jones are among the Yankees sporting Friday’s Giancarlo Stanton basketball jersey giveaway during BP today pic.twitter.com/m6XS5FeTiW
— Yankees Videos (@snyyankees) May 18, 2026

Will Caballero reclaim his spot from Volpe?

Since taking over everyday duties, Volpe has proved he belongs in the lineup with a string of stellar performances. However, Boone has already made the internal shortstop hierarchy clear, hinting that Caballero will reclaim his role once fully healthy.

Regardless of how the playing time shakes out, Volpe remains a vital piece of the puzzle. He overcame costly defensive miscues last season, but he currently sports a completely revamped approach and looks primed to make a major impact in the big leagues moving forward.

A potential revenge series against the Rays

After being traded from Tampa Bay to New York, Caballero is now in line to face his former club. During his 86-game regular-season stint with the Rays, he logged 53 hits, 37 runs, and two home runs.

Whether he gets the green light for the upcoming series rests on the medical staff’s final clearance. It’s a high-stakes return, as the Yankees wrap up their set with the Toronto Blue Jays while trying to chase down the first-place Rays in a tight AL East race.

Manager Tony Vitello took responsibility after the San Francisco Giants’ bullpen collapsed in a heartbreaking walk-off loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The San Francisco Giants were just one out away from escaping another difficult inning Tuesday night before everything unraveled in a painful 5-3 walk-off loss against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. After the game, manager Tony Vitello openly accepted responsibility for the bullpen decision that ultimately changed the outcome.

With two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning, Vitello removed right-hander Caleb Kilian and turned to left-hander Matt Gage to face Ketel Marte. Two pitches later, Marte launched a game-winning three-run homer into left field to hand San Francisco another frustrating defeat. “Went with a fresh arm, different look, and made the wrong decision, cost us the game,” Vitello told reporters afterward. “Obviously, it’s on me.”

The loss dropped the Giants to 20-29 on the season and overshadowed several strong individual performances earlier in the game. San Francisco’s bullpen had repeatedly escaped trouble before the ninth‑inning collapse, but the club also struggled offensively, finishing 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Despite the challenging campaign and outside noise, the Giants reportedly not consider a Rafael Devers trade.

Vitello explains late bullpen decision

Vitello’s decision came after Kilian had already thrown 25 pitches while working through multiple high-pressure situations. Marte’s switch-hitting ability also created a difficult matchup decision late in the game.

Starting pitcher Landen Roupp of the Giants reacts after being removed. Christian Petersen/Getty Images

The Giants manager explained that he wanted to give Arizona a different look by bringing in Gage, who had performed well for San Francisco throughout the season. However, the move quickly backfired once Marte connected for the decisive home run.

Before the ninth inning, the Giants had managed to survive several dangerous moments. Kilian escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning, while Keaton Winn also worked through pressure situations earlier in the game with help from solid defensive plays behind him.

Rafael Devers, Landen Roupp provide positives despite loss

Even with the tough ending, San Francisco still saw encouraging performances from several key players. Rafael Devers delivered one of his strongest all-around games of the season, homering in the second inning shortly after Willy Adames also went deep.

Starting pitcher Landen Roupp added six solid innings while allowing only one run on seven hits and collecting three strikeouts in his first quality start since late April.

Still, the Giants could not capitalize offensively when opportunities appeared, and one late mistake from the bullpen erased much of the positive work done earlier in the night. San Francisco will now try to regroup quickly as the pressure continues building during a difficult stretch of the season.

The Minnesota Twins made an unexpected roster move involving Matt Bowman despite the veteran pitcher’s impressive performance at Triple-A St. Paul.
The Minnesota Twins made a surprising roster decision this week after releasing veteran pitcher Matt Bowman despite his impressive production at Triple-A St. Paul. The move comes with Minnesota continuing to struggle through a disappointing 22-27 start to the 2026 season, while the pitching staff has also dealt with setbacks after Pablo Lopez missed the season with the Twins due to Tommy John surgery.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman on X, Bowman was granted his release largely because of roster limitations rather than performance concerns. “Matt Bowman was given his release by Twins, likely due to 40-man issues,” Heyman reported. “MLB deal elsewhere probably awaits.”

Bowman had been one of the organization’s most effective pitchers at Triple-A this season. Across 21.1 innings, the right-hander posted a 1.69 ERA with 25 strikeouts, only six walks, and a strong 54.5% ground-ball rate.

Bowman produced strong numbers in Triple-A

Even though Bowman never received an opportunity with Minnesota’s major league roster this season, his production in the minors clearly stood out. His ability to induce ground balls also made him an intriguing depth option for a pitching staff that has dealt with inconsistency at times during the year.

Heyman also suggested that Bowman may not remain available for long. Given his strong Triple-A numbers and previous major league experience, another team could soon offer the veteran reliever an MLB contract.

For the Twins, the decision reflects the difficult balancing act teams often face with 40-man roster management during the season. Minnesota continues trying to climb back into contention, but moves like this can become necessary when roster spots are limited.

Meanwhile, Bowman now becomes an experienced pitching option on the market at a time when many contenders are searching for bullpen depth heading deeper into the season.

Freddie Freeman had been mired in a mini-slump for the Los Angeles Dodgers over the last few games, but the former MVP emphatically bounced back during this week's crucial series against the San Diego Padres.
There is always time for redemption in the baseball regular season, and Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman proved to be the perfect example of that. After enduring a brutal 0-for-14 slump since May 8, the veteran first baseman broke out of his funk in a big way, launching two home runs during the series against the rival San Diego Padres.

When asked about the adjustment that sparked his multi-homer resurgence, Freeman kept it lighthearted. “I did a little swing change for the game, that’s all… hopefully, I’m able to replicate it tomorrow [laughs],” Freeman told reporters.

If that minor mechanical tweak keeps paying dividends against the Padres and beyond, it will provide a massive boost for a Dodgers offense that relies heavily on Freeman’s elite consistency at the plate.

While the front office provided a positive update on Tyler Glasnow’s injury recovery and return progress, the team continues to roll, maintaining an impressive 30-19 record. With Freeman snapping out of his slump and finding his power stroke, Los Angeles remains in prime position to defend its World Series title.

Freddie Freeman's 23rd career multi-HR game 💪 pic.twitter.com/CZYGhYrgDW
— MLB (@MLB) May 20, 2026

A closer look at Freeman’s recent bounce-back

Prior to Tuesday’s breakout, Freeman’s previous four games yielded uncharacteristic numbers. The All-Star went completely hitless, posting a .000 batting average (0-for-14) with four walks, six strikeouts, and two runs scored. The sudden drop-off had drawn concern from manager Dave Roberts, who noted that his star infielder had looked a bit fatigued.

Even with the multi-homer night against San Diego, Freeman’s season totals—four home runs and 20 RBIs—indicate he hasn’t quite played up to his usual MVP-caliber standards. However, Tuesday’s two-home-run blast could be the exact confidence booster he needs to kickstart a major hot streak.

Freeman’s next test will come in the high-stakes series finale against the Padres, who are fighting to keep pace with the Dodgers at the top of the NL West standings. After that division battle, the Dodgers will shift their focus to a matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers, a squad currently dealing with some internal postgame frustration from manager Pat Murphy.

Don Mattingly explained why the Phillies are giving J.T. Realmuto more rest days as Philadelphia manages the veteran catcher’s workload.
The Philadelphia Phillies continue trying to carefully manage veteran catcher J.T. Realmuto as the team pushes through a competitive stretch of the season. Before Tuesday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Reds, interim manager Don Mattingly addressed why Philadelphia has recently started giving Realmuto additional rest days behind the plate.

Mattingly, who recently addressed the Phillies’ surge, explained that the decision is focused on protecting the veteran catcher over the course of a long season rather than reducing his role within the lineup. “He wants to play, and he wants to be in there every day, and we appreciate that,” Mattingly said, via reporter Shaun Nestor on X. “But, again, I think sometimes you have to save guys from themselves and try to give them days here and there.”

Philadelphia later fell 4-1 to the Reds, dropping the club to 25-24 on the season. The Phillies have shown improvement under Mattingly recently, but the team is still searching for more offensive consistency, including from Realmuto, who is batting .220 with one home run, eight RBIs, and a .585 OPS across 100 at-bats this year.

Phillies using three-catcher setup to help Realmuto

According to Nestor, Mattingly has been taking advantage of carrying three catchers on the roster to reduce Realmuto’s workload while still keeping him involved with specific pitchers.

Cristopher Sanchez of the Phillies celebrates with teammate J.T. Realmuto. Justin Berl/Getty Images

The strategy allows Philadelphia to balance rest with continuity behind the plate, especially for one of the club’s most experienced leaders. Realmuto has long been known for his durability and desire to play nearly every day, but the Phillies appear focused on keeping him healthy deeper into the season.

Phillies hoping rested Realmuto can help offense improve

Philadelphia’s offense has struggled to consistently produce during parts of the 2026 season, making Realmuto’s production even more important moving forward.

While his numbers remain below his usual standards, the Phillies believe additional rest could help the veteran catcher stay fresh both offensively and defensively.

The Phillies will now look to bounce back against Cincinnati as they continue trying to climb further above .500 and maintain momentum in the National League playoff race.

Manager Carlos Mendoza addressed the Mets’ recent defensive struggles after New York blew an early lead against the Washington Nationals.
The New York Mets let another opportunity slip away Tuesday night after a rough defensive stretch helped turn an early lead into a 9-6 loss against the Washington Nationals. Despite jumping ahead 5-0 through the first two innings, the Mets quickly lost control of the game as mistakes in the field continued to pile up.

Manager Carlos Mendoza addressed the team’s recent defensive struggles after the game, pointing to routine mistakes that have hurt New York during an already difficult stretch of the season. “Not good. The past four days or so making errors on routine plays. We’re a good team defensively,” Mendoza said, via SNY.

The loss dropped the Mets further behind in the National League standings as injuries and inconsistent play continue creating problems across the roster. With Francisco Lindor currently sidelined because of a calf injury and hopeful he can return in a month, the team has struggled to find defensive stability and maintain momentum during games.

Mets’ defense collapses during pivotal inning vs. Nationals

The turning point came during a disastrous fourth inning for the Mets. After rookie pitcher Nolan McLean allowed traffic on the bases, Washington capitalized on a defensive breakdown that completely shifted the momentum.

Nick Morabito and Tyrone Taylor of the Mets are unable to make the catch on a fly ball. Jess Rapfogel/Getty Images

With runners on second and third and one out, McLean induced what appeared to be a routine ground ball to Bo Bichette at shortstop. Bichette attempted to throw home for the force out, but catcher Luis Torrens failed to handle the throw cleanly as the ball rolled to the backstop. Two Nationals runners scored on the play, extending Washington’s lead and putting New York in an even deeper hole.

The Mets have now committed several costly defensive mistakes over the past few games, something Mendoza clearly believes must improve quickly if the team hopes to turn its season around.

Mendoza still believes Mets can recover

Even with the frustrating loss, Mendoza continues showing confidence in the roster. The Mets still have more than 100 games remaining in the 2026 season, giving the club plenty of time to recover if they can begin playing cleaner baseball.

The Mets now face growing pressure to stabilize things before the season slips even further away. If the Mets hope to climb back into contention, improving defensively will likely need to become one of the team’s biggest priorities moving forward.

The Milwaukee Brewers are putting together an outstanding regular season, sitting in second place in the NL Central with a 27-18 record, and manager Pat Murphy has voiced nothing but satisfaction regarding the high level of play from his squad.
It’s rare to see a manager dissatisfied after a dominant victory, but that’s exactly where Pat Murphy stood following the Milwaukee Brewers‘ blowout win over the Chicago Cubs in Monday’s series opener. Speaking to reporters postgame, Murphy revealed that his squad is still searching for league-wide respect.

“They don’t even know most of our guys’ names, so they’re never going to be intimidated by us—but we’re not looking for that,” Murphy said after the Brewers’ 9-3 statement win over the NL Central leaders.

While stars like Bryce Turang and William Contreras spearhead the lineup, Murphy pointed out that the rest of the league is still sleeping on key contributors. Role players like Tyler Black, who is batting .333, and Jake Bauers, who has launched seven home runs, continue to produce in the shadows.

Murphy’s chip-on-the-shoulder mentality is a bit surprising, especially considering opposing managers are already taking notice. Just two weeks ago, New York Yankees skipper Aaron Boone pulled no punches, criticizing his own team’s flat performance following a series loss to these same Brewers.

Did a lot of damage to the scoreboard in last night's win#ThisIsMyCrew x @MillerLite pic.twitter.com/ij3jouLvy7
— Milwaukee Brewers (@Brewers) May 19, 2026

A closer look at the Brewers’ recent surge

To see if Murphy’s “flying under the radar” narrative holds weight, let’s break down Milwaukee’s last five games and the players driving their recent success:

In the series finale against the San Diego Padres, the Brewers cruised to a 7-1 victory on the strength of an 11-hit, error-free performance. William Contreras paced the offense, going 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored.

Milwaukee carried that momentum into their series opener against the Minnesota Twins, scraping out a 3-2 win (nine hits, one error). Rookie phenom Jackson Chourio earned player of the game honors, turning in a 2-for-5 night with a double, two runs, and a crucial outfield assist.

The Brewers clinched the next frame against the Twins 2-1 behind a five-hit, zero-error effort. Chourio stayed hot, going 2-for-4 with a double and a go-ahead solo shot, while reliever Patrick Outman locked down a stellar four-inning save, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

Milwaukee’s win streak snapped in a narrow 5-4 loss in the series finale against Minnesota, despite out-hitting the Twins 10 to five. Outfielder Garrett Mitchell (1-for-3, HR) and veteran DH Christian Yelich (1-for-5, HR) provided the lone bright spots in the defeat.

The bounce-back was immediate in Monday’s series opener against the Cubs. The Brewers exploded for 13 hits in a 9-3 rout, powered by first baseman Jake Bauers, who finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs, and four RBIs.

During this impressive 4-1 stretch, unheralded names like Outman, Mitchell, and Bauers have carried the heaviest load. If these under-the-radar pieces keep producing, the rest of the league won’t be able to ignore Murphy’s club much longer.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone hinted Gerrit Cole could return sooner than expected as New York deals with growing rotation concerns.
The New York Yankees could bring Gerrit Cole back to the major league rotation sooner than expected. After recovering from Tommy John surgery, the veteran ace is nearing the end of his rehab assignment, and manager Aaron Boone, who recently outlined Cole’s rehab plan, said the team is now deciding whether Cole needs another minor league start before returning to New York.

“We’ll see,” Boone said before the Yankees faced the Toronto Blue Jays, according to ESPN. “We’re kind of talking about that here today, tomorrow, and we’ll make a call one way or the other.”

The Yankees improved to 29-19 after a 7-6 win over Toronto, while the Blue Jays fell to 21-26. With injuries continuing to affect the rotation, Cole’s return could give New York an important boost heading into a tough stretch of the season.

Cole getting close to Yankees comeback

Recent roster moves increased speculation that Cole could return this week. The Yankees optioned Elmer Rodriguez to Triple-A, leaving an open spot in the rotation for Friday’s series against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Aaron Boone #17 of the Yankees relieves starting pitcher Gerrit Cole #45. Elsa/Getty Images

“He looks really good,” Boone said. “His last start was mostly excellent.” The 35-year-old has posted a 5.28 ERA during rehab, but the Yankees have focused more on his velocity and pitch count as he builds back toward full strength.

Yankees rotation dealing with more injury concerns

Cole’s possible return comes at an important time for New York’s pitching staff. Max Fried recently went on the injured list with an elbow issue, while Carlos Rodon is still trying to regain consistency after returning earlier this month.

Even without Cole for most of the season, the Yankees rotation has remained one of the best in baseball. Boone said the right-hander has already checked many of the boxes needed before returning to MLB action. Whenever Cole officially returns, it will be his first major league appearance since Game 4 of the 2024 World Series.

The New York Mets have designated outfielder Austin Slater for assignment, a roster clearing that opens the door for a potential Luis Robert Jr.'s comeback.
Austin Slater’s time in Queens has come to an end, at least for the foreseeable future. According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, the New York Mets have designated the veteran outfielder for assignment, a move that immediately sparks questions regarding Luis Robert Jr.’s potential return to the active roster.

With this roster move, manager Carlos Mendoza clears a crucial spot on the 26-man roster for the battles ahead. While Robert Jr. continues to progress in his recovery from a herniated disc, the front office has yet to establish an official timeline for his return, alongside Francisco Lindor, to action this season.

The front office ultimately cut bait on Slater following a prolonged offensive slump. Slashed down by a disappointing .220 batting average and a complete power outage—featuring zero home runs, zero triples, and a mere two RBIs on the year—the veteran outfielder clearly struggled to find his footing in the majors this season.

While other high-profile Mets, such as trade acquisition Bo Bichette, continue to endure slow starts in the regular season, Slater will now enter the waiver wire or face free agency in an attempt to rebuild his stock and latch on with a new club.

Luis Robert Jr. #88 of the New York Mets walks back to the dugout.

The Mets’ 26-man roster post-Slater

As the Mets look to spark internal production while awaiting the highly anticipated return of Luis Robert Jr., New York’s 26-man roster undergoes a slight configuration following this veteran departure.

Here is how the Mets’ 26-man roster currently shapes up:

Position Players (13)

Catchers (2): Luis Torrens, Hayden Senger

First Basemen (1): Mark Vientos

Second Basemen (1): Marcus Semien

Third Basemen (1): Bo Bichette

Shortstops (1): Vidal Brujan

Outfielders (6): Juan Soto, Nick Morabito, Carson Benge, A.J. Ewing, Tyrone Taylor, Brett Baty (utility depth)

Designated Hitter (1): MJ Melendez

Pitchers (13)

Starting Rotation (5): Freddy Peralta, Sean Manaea, David Peterson, Christian Scott, Nolan McLean

Bullpen (8): Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, Craig Kimbrel, Brooks Raley, Daniel Duarte, Huascar Brazoban, Austin Warren, Tobias Myers

Armed with this revised depth chart, the Mets are pushing to build serious momentum in the NL East following an emotional Subway Series victory over the New York Yankees. However, with an injured list that already features anchors like Francisco Lindor and Jorge Polanco, Mendoza and his staff will need to creatively maximize their remaining options to keep the club afloat.

The New York Yankees came up short in their matchups against the New York Mets, but quickly bounced back against the Toronto Blue Jays.
MLB always makes it clear that to achieve certain goals, teams must bounce back as quickly as possible. This is what happened to the New York Yankees, who, after being defeated in the Subway Series against the New York Mets, used that loss as a springboard to regain their form and defeat the Toronto Blue Jays in their first matchup.

David Bednar spoke to the press after the game and referred to how important it is to recover quickly: “You’ve got to get punched in the face and how you respond from that,” the pitcher revealed.
