Coach Dabo Swinney spoke with David Hale of ESPN.com and accused new Ole Miss coach, Pete Golding, of tampering with Luke Ferrelli, linebacker. Swinney claimed Golding, who is Lane Kiffin’s replacement, had repeated contacts with Ferrelli after the player signed an NIL contract and enrolled in classes at Clemson.

“This is a whole other level of tampering,” Swinney said. “It’s total hypocrisy… This is a really sad state of affairs. We have a broken system, and if there are no consequences for tampering, then we have no rules and we have no governance.” Safe to say Swinney didn’t hold back when speaking about Golding trying to sway Ferrelli’s future.

Swinney also delivered another message to Golding

“I’m not trying to get anybody fired, but when is enough enough?” Swinney explained. “If we have rules, and tampering is a rule, then there should be a consequence for that. And shame on the adults if we’re not going to hold each other accountable.” After all, if a player has signed to play for a school and another program comes and induces the player to breach it, this could come at the cost of civil liability for tortious interference.

Ole Miss said they did it because the same has been done to them. The fact is that tampering is becoming a big issue now that NIL is in place, and that is a problem the NCAA must solve sooner rather than later.

Clemson has more NIL money than Ole Miss

It’s been reported that Clemson has around $15 million in NIL money this season. Ole Miss has around $10 million. While both are considered aggressive in the NIL space, Ole Miss trying to poach a player from Clemson is opportunistic. In the end, Clemson has more money, but that doesn’t mean they could just improve the offer on the table.

After all, Clemson might have its money allocated elsewhere or have other plans in store. Also, unpunished tampering could be use in that way. Make programs overpay to retain talent to minimize their chances of making more moves. Swinney was pretty aggressive in his accusation, but he does have a point. If these conducts aren’t punished, it’s a bad look for all parties involved.

Far from making excuses that might explain the poor performance of Castellanos’ team in the loss to the Tigers, FSU’s coach was blunt about one of the main reasons they failed to impose themselves against their rival.

After the 24-10 loss, Norvell spoke to the press and, with a four-word message, revealed where his Seminoles failed to make a difference: “Too many missed opportunities.”

Although Tommy Castellanos finished 23-of-43 for 250 yards with one touchdown and one interception, failing to capitalize on key opportunities ultimately tilted the game in favor of the home team.

“I only have a few more days here, and I just want to give it everything I have, and I feel like I have,” Klubnik also added. “The fans that are here, the community, and everything of what it means to be here, it’s been a dream come true. So, just continue to fight for four more weeks.”

What injury is bothering Klubnik?

Clemson starting quarterback Cade Klubnik is currently dealing with a right ankle sprain sustained late in the third quarter of last Saturday’s win over Boston College. The injury occurred after a play where he rolled onto his ankle during a nine-yard scoring attempt.

“A disappointing outcome for us today,” Belichick commented, via On3. “I thought we had a good week. I think we were ready to go, and unfortunately we gave some big plays early in the game that really tilted the game, and we’re just never able to recover. So we just got to do a better job of coaching, a better job playing, and just eliminate the mistakes that are fixable.

“We just can’t make those mistake,” Belichick said about illegal formation penalties. “When the players make them, that’s obviously bad. But the fact that they happen is part of that’s coaching too. So I’ll take my share of the responsibility on that.”

What’s next?

Belichick and North Carolina will head into a bye week in the 2025 college football season. To say they will enjoy the off-days would be a massive overstatement. However, it might in come in handy for UNC to get back on track ahead of key matchups in the ACC.

On October 17, the Tar Heels will make a trip to the West Coast to take on the California Golden Bears. As if Belichick and his staff didn’t have enough on their plates, they must game-plan for a menace of a quarterback in true freshman Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele.

If North Carolina walks into Berkeley struggling on defense like they have all season long, they could be in for a very long night. Sagapolutele is coming off the worst game of his young career, though. Perhaps Belichick can find a pattern in his three-interception film to exploit when the Tar Heels take on the Golden Bears.

One of the more notable texts eminded him that “tough times are a cleansing, because it shows you who’s with you.” Swinney didn’t identify the coach but made it clear the message resonated. The timing, he noted, was important as Clemson looks to regroup after a rocky opening month.

Swinney also mentioned hearing from what he called “a very prominent person,” though he didn’t reveal the name. That friend told him, “This is great, because you’re gonna figure out who your friends are. Love you, brother.” According to Fowler, the coach appreciated the reminder that even in tough times, support often comes from unexpected places.

Despite the Good Messages, Swinney Isn’t Happy

“They give you eight (more games) for a reason, but we’ve got no room for error,” he said. “We’re uphill and the wind is at our face, for sure. Hey, we gotta go do it the hard way. Not going to be able to do it the easy way, but we’re not out. As long as we stay together and keep competing, anything can happen. The good news is, we’ve got a good team.

“We played a tough opener, we could’ve played East-West University, right? It probably feels different right now. We’ve got two losses that came down to the last freaking play of the game, and we’ve had opportunities in both of those games. Putting it all together has been our problem, that’s really been the frustrating thing.”

Taking responsibility

True to his style, Swinney made it clear that the responsibility for this slow start to the college football season rests with him — not his players, including Klubnik.

“It all falls on me, it’s my responsibility,” Swinney said. “I’m the head coach and I’ve been here a long time, been in a lot of games. I’ve had some 2-3 starts, in fact, in my first year and we went all the way to the ACC Championship game. I think we lost down here. We’ve had a couple of those type of moments, you just keep playing the games.

“I know the world we live in, I know the world we’ve created at Clemson with high expectations and excellence. I don’t have my head in the sand. I know there’s gonna be a ton of negativity, that comes with it. We can’t do anything about that, we’ve got to stay together and go play. In the end, you don’t have the start you want, but you can have the kind of ending you want. You still control that.”

Sometimes, a big step forward leads to many steps back. That could very well be the case for Syracuse’s triumph at Death Valley. Though Clemson is mired in concerns and drama, a road win against the Tigers is nothing short of an accomplishment for the Orange. However, it came with its fair share of consequences in the NCAA season.

Not only did the program’s number one signal-caller go down with a serious injury, but the school is also being forced to foot a hefty bill. The reason? The ACC believes Syracuse faked injuries during the late stages of the Clemson game. Determined to stamp out such behavior in college football, the league responded with a significant fine.

“The ACC fined Syracuse $25,000 and publicly reprimanded the school for faking injuries in a 34-21 win over Clemson last weekend, calling its actions ‘unethical and contrary to the spirit of the rules,'” ESPN reported.

Call it as you see it

Fake injuries have been a hot topic in the NCAA for a minute now. Several conferences put out firm statements last season condemning that conduct and reassuring there would be consequences for teams who were found guilty on those grounds. It seems Syracuse learned that lesson the hard way. Regardless, the game will still go up in the win column for the Orange.

After the game, Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik didn’t mince words about the suspicious injuries stoppages which halted the Tigers’ drives before gaining momentum.

“Props to them, they stopped us on some third downs and then they have an injury or something like that when we really got going,” Klubnik vividly said. “That’s up to them if they want to be honest about that. It was definitely tough for us to really get in a rhythm. We’re playing fast and unfortunately they had a guy get hurt or a timeout or something like that.”

Repeat offenders

Needless to say, Syracuse didn’t reinvent the wheel. Fake injuries have been part of college football for a long time. However, the ACC’s fine brought an important precedent back to the surface.

Especially since Syracuse had already pulled a not-so-subtle double-injury stunt against the Tennessee Volunteers in the 2025 NCAA season opener. It didn’t work for the Orange then, as they lost 45–26, but this time it did—only to come back and bite them.

With that play fresh on everybody’s mind, the ACC didn’t stutter to intervene and sanction the school in Onondaga County. “The actions by the two players – especially with the concurrent action by the coach in the team area – were a clear attempt to gain an unmerited advantage by stopping the game in order to secure an injury timeout,” the league’s statement read.

The head coach spoke with raw honesty, calling the outcome “incredibly disappointing” and saying his heart hurt for both the players and fans. He admitted that the Tigers simply “can’t seem to get on the same page,” a brutal assessment for a program built on unity.

Swinney pointed to both sides of the ball, praising moments of effort but stressing that Clemson is failing to play complementary football. Missed chances, blown assignments, and a lack of finishing drives haunted them again at Memorial Stadium.

The frustration was visible, but so was the vulnerability. Cameras caught an emotional Swinney after the game, and he admitted, “I’m human. I’m not a cyborg. I hurt for our team and I hurt for our fans.”

“A lightning warning has been issued for the area within eight miles around Memorial Stadium,” Clemson Football announced on X. “For your safety, we ask that you please move to a safer location underneath the stadium.“

Perhaps, a pathetic fallacy taking place in Clemson. The weather has once again been a factor in a home game for the Tigers. Clemson’s week 2 showdown with the Troy Trojans had also been momentarily delayed due to lightning. Maybe it’s a sign for the Tigers to pay attention in the NCAA campaign. But then again, maybe it’s just a classic summer storm in South Carolina.

Re-focus

Perhaps, the weather delay in Clemson isn’t actually a bad thing for the Tigers. With the program struggling to start the game at home, the prolonged halftime could come in handy for Dabo Swinney to rally the troops and turn the tide in the second half.

Cade Klubnik and the Tigers got off to a slow start as Syracuse stepped into the pedal. Steve Angeli and the Orange, on the other hand, looked in full control. Holding a 24-14 lead at the time of the weather stoppage, Cuse walked into Clemson’s home decided to run the table. So far so good, but there’s much football left to be played. Though it’s unclear when the action will indeed resume.

It’s still anyone’s game, nevertheless. It could all change in the second half. The weather delay could turn out to be a momentum killer for Syracuse, who is looking for a statement win to kickstart its ACC schedule in the 2025 college football season.
