Kaepernick has been away from the league for six years now, so even if the Jets were to sign him, it’s highly unlikely that he’d play. Even so, they can’t do much worse right now.

The New York Jets entered the 2023 NFL season with high hopes of a Super Bowl run after acquiring four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers during the offseason. However, their aspirations took a severe hit as Rodgers’ campaign ended after just four plays due to a torn Achilles.

Head coach Robert Saleh promptly turned to former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson as the starter, but his performances left much to be desired. This led to speculation about the Jets’ options to replace Rodgers, with some reports suggesting Colin Kaepernick was interesting in coming back.

Kaepernick, who has been seeking another opportunity in the NFL for years, reached out to the Jets following Rodgers’ injury. Albeit the Jets did not consider him, musician J. Cole revealed a letter addressed to Jets general manager Joe Douglas written by the former quarterback.

In the letter dated 10 days after Rodgers suffered his injury against the Bills, Kaepernick expressed his understanding of the team’s championship aspirations. He acknowledged that Zach Wilson was tasked with leading the team but requested to be signed to the practice squad, not to replace him in the lineup.

“Worst case scenario, you see what I have to offer and you’re not that impressed. Best case scenario, you realize you have a real weapon at your disposal in the event you ever need to use it. In either of these scenarios, I would be committed to getting your defense ready week in and week out, all season long, and I would wear that responsibility like a badge of honor”.

Kap has been out of the league for years now and he’s not likely to make a comeback at this point. But he continues to train and claims that he’s physically and mentally ready to be out there on the gridiron again.

That’s not what NFL legend Warren Sapp seems to think about him. Even though the former Defensive Tackle wasn’t there, he recently claimed that Kaep’s workout with the Las Vegas Raiders was ‘a disaster’.

Needless to say, Kap’s agentJeff Nalley didn’t care for Sapp’s comments. If anything, it seems like the Raiders were actually quite impressed by the workout, even daring him to reach out to the Raiders’ G.M.:

“I guess Warren didn’t talk to the General Manager or the head coach,” Nalley told ProFootballTalk. “I spoke to the G.M. [Dave Zieger] several times and he said they all thought Kap was in great shape and threw the ball really well and encouraged any team to call him about the workout and he would tell them the same. I’m surprised Warren would say that, because it’s not true and you would think he would want Kap on a team.”

Raiders Aren’t Likely To Sign Him

But, then again, given how long he’s been out of the league, it’s just not realistic to think that the Raiders are going to sign him at this point, especially with Derek Carr fresh off signing a big contract:

“If there’s an opportunity to improve the team, we said it from Day 1 that we would look at every opportunity,” Josh McDaniels said after the workout. “He’s not the first player that we’ve looked at and not the last one. There are going to be a lot of people who are going to come in and out of this building and have an opportunity to make an impression.”

In reality, it seems like Colin Kaepernick’s days in the National Football League are all but over. And, once again, regardless of where you stand on him, it’s always sad to see a good football player away from the game.

Derek Carr’s support words towards Kaepernick could be a sign that he will play as a backup QB for the upcoming 2022 NFL season, also a few weeks ago the rumors about Colin signing with the Raiders are gaining more strength than ever.

Kaepernick is not a rookie, he knows what it’s like to play with an NFL team and take them to a Super Bowl game. He lost to the Ravens in what was his only big game appearance as a quarterback.

Actually Sapp did not say anything, his words are based on the opinion that another person shared with him. Sapp was not present during Kaepernick’s workout with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022.

Kaepernick was struggling on the field before all the kneeling controversy. His accuracy was off, and he looked far from the player who led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl. But then again, he was still better than at least one-third of the QBs in the league.

Still, people saw his workout with the Las Vegas Raiders with plenty of skepticism. It seems like he’s been away for far too long already. Nonetheless, Peter King still believes he’s got a shot at making the roster, albeit a tiny one:

“Let me tell you a story from my years covering the Giants in the eighties. Coach Bill Parcells, at games, used to carry in his back pocket what he called his “Ready List,” a list with two or three prime unsigned players at each position. That way, if the Giants had an injury during a game, Parcells could check the Ready List and direct pro scout Tim Rooney to get Player X to the Giants’ facility so he could be signed by the next day. Parcells was famous for working out players to see if they’d be a fit in a time of need, and continually update the list as the year went on.

When I heard McDaniels say the Raiders had worked out a ton of guys, I thought of the Ready List, and thought of the ton of guys McDaniels and Ziegler saw Bill Belichick direct the Patriots to work out when they worked under Belichick. That’s the way smart NFL people do business. In fact, I heard last week the Raiders have worked out two kickers this month, even though Las Vegas employs one of the best kickers in football, Daniel Carlson. Be ready for emergencies, always.

My guess is McDaniels and Ziegler have that Ready List, for sure, and the workout of Kaepernick was to see where he might fall on that list in case the Raiders get an injury at quarterback. Or in case another team gets a quarterback hurt and trades for Mullens, leaving the Raiders with a roster spot to be filled by a quarterback.”

Well, that may not be the answer Kaep fans were waiting for, but it’s at least something. The NFL robbed him of his career, and he may never be back on the field. But at least there’s still some hope.

There was a time when it was clear that Kaepernick deserved a chance and was a better QB than some starters in the league. That may not be the case after six years away from competitive football.

Nonetheless, Mark Davis recently showed his support for Kaepernick and even claimed that he’d welcome him for a workout. That happened a couple of days ago, yet HC Josh McDaniels decided not to talk about it.

“We will only talk about the people that are on our team,” McDaniels said, per ProFootballTalk.“Dave (Ziegler) and his staff have worked out tons of guys this spring. We really don’t make comments about the evaluations that we made or what they looked like, what they didn’t look like, strengths and weaknesses, those kinds of things. They are obviously kind of private for us as we look at things to try to make decisions to make the team better. If players are added to the team, then obviously we’ll talk about them at that point.”

The newly-appointed coach didn’t want to dig too deep into all details. For him, it was just a matter of creating a competitive environment within the team and trying to find areas of improvement:

“We’re encouraging the competition right now,” McDaniels said. “I think our football understands that competition is the way for each player to improve. We brought in tons of people for workouts.”

“If there’s an opportunity to improve the team, we said it from Day 1 that we would look at every opportunity,” the coach added. “He’s not the first player that we’ve looked at and not the last one. There are going to be a lot of people who are going to come in and out of this building and have an opportunity to make an impression.”

To be real, the chances of Kaepernick making a roster at this point in his career are close to zero. He’s been away from the game for way too long, so it’s hard not to feel like this is all propaganda and PR from the Raiders.

The most memorable part of Kaepernick’s NFL career was his appearance during Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans. The San Francisco 49ers, Colin’s team, played against the Baltimore Ravens in what was an epic season finale where two family related head coaches (Harbaugh brothers) played with their best rosters.

I know right now the situation likely won’t allow me to step into a starting role.
