The head coach pointed directly at execution as the biggest problem. “Sometimes it felt like the moment was just too big for some of our athletes and they’ve got to do something about that,” he told reporters. “We’ve got to do better, as a staff, as a team, and I’ve got to do better.”

The coach added that Colorado missed chances were not about schemes or scouting but about accountability. “They’re prepared, they’re studying film… It was a great scouting output for the staff, we’ve just got to step up. We’ve got to make the plays that were there. We had tremendous opportunities, we just didn’t.”

Even as he warned his own team to improve, Sanders gave credit to BYU for how they performed. “Disciplined team, fundamentally sound team. They played their b—- off. Young quarterback is phenomenal. Proud of him. He made the plays that he was supposed to make to win the game.”

In the end, although Colorado became a national sensation during the 2023 season, Deion admits the critics won’t stop. The expectations are way different than other programs in the country.

“I can’t win nine games and our GPA suffers. Our GPA can’t be high, but we lose another eight games. My wins are different. We have to win in every area. That’s the way we’re judged. I’m cool with that because we come a little different. So, the expectations are greater.”

It all began with shocking wins against TCU, Nebraska and Colorado State, but, after losses facing Oregon and USC, reality set in and the second half of the year was disastrous to post a 4-8 record without bowl eligibility.

However, the NFL took notice of Coach Prime’s impact on and off the field. Although Deion Sanders already confirmed he will be back with the Buffaloes this year, 2025 is still a big question mark.

Deion Sanders spoke about his possible future in Colorado considering his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, could be one of the top prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft.

“I’m a father, not a baby daddy. I don’t follow my kids. I pave roads for my kids. I build generational wealth for my kids. I lead my kids. I don’t follow my kids. So I do not plan on following my kids to the NFL. I have work to do here.”

Shilo Sanders will also play his final year in college football, but, that won’t derail the plans of Coach Prime to build a championship program with the Buffaloes. He is not going anywhere.

“I absolutely love it here, and I would never think a young brother from the South would really love it in this part of the country, but I really do. The fan base that we have here. I just want to really bless you with a tremendously successful team. I really do. That’s my heart.”

However, the downfall began with consecutive losses facing contenders like Oregon and USC. Since that moment, the Buffaloes couldn’t recover and finished the calendar with eight defeats in their last nine games.

Now, looking into 2024, Coach Prime has set a major goal for Colorado. With all his experience in the NFL, Deion Sanders believes they can make an impact in college football by reaching the playoffs with a new format expanded to 12 teams.

To make that happen, or at least become bowl eligible, it won’t be only about transfers and players. That’s why, Colorado will make a big splash at a coaching position.
