Cricket isn’t just a sport — it’s a rhythm, a strategy and a story told in numbers. While the players battle it out on the field, the scoreboard quietly captures every twist and turn with runs, wickets, and overs as its language.

Understanding that language is key to truly appreciating the game. Each run chased, every wicket lost and the pacing of overs can change the course of a match in moments, often more dramatically than meets the eye.

This scoring system, deeply rooted in tradition yet always adapting, adds a layer of tension and excitement to every delivery. Here’s a closer look at how cricket keeps score — and why those numbers matter more than you might think.

Runs

Runs are the fundamental unit of scoring. Batsmen accumulate runs by hitting the ball and running between the wickets, or by sending the ball to the boundary. A ball reaching the boundary after touching the ground scores four runs; if it crosses the boundary in the air, it’s six runs.

Akash Deep of Lucknow Super Giants watches as Rachin Ravindra and Shaik Rasheed of Chennai Super Kings run between the wickets during the 2025 IPL. (Source: Prakash Singh/Getty Images)

Beyond these, batsmen can score multiple runs by running between the wickets, capitalizing on gaps in the field. The total number of runs for the innings is equal to the sums of the individual batsmen’s scores and the extras.

Wickets

A wicket signifies the dismissal of a batsman and is a critical event in the game. There are various ways a batsman can be dismissed, including being bowled, caught, or run out. Each wicket taken by the fielding team brings them closer to ending the batting team’s innings.

In a standard match, each team has ten wickets per innings. The loss of wickets not only reduces the batting team’s ability to score runs but also shifts the momentum in favor of the fielding side.

Overs

An over consists of six legal deliveries bowled from one end of a cricket pitch to the player batting at the other end, almost always by a single bowler. After six deliveries, the umpire calls ‘over’; the fielding team switches ends, and a different bowler is selected to bowl from the opposite end.

England captain Ben Stokes throws the ball to run out India batsman Ravindra Jadeja as bowler Joe Root looks on during day four of the 1st Test Match between India and England in 2024. (Source: Stu Forster/Getty Images)

Overs structure the game, influencing strategies and pacing for both teams. In limited-overs formats, such as One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20s (T20s), the number of overs per innings is fixed, adding a layer of strategic depth to how teams approach batting and bowling.

Extras and strike rotation

Extras are runs awarded to the batting team due to errors by the fielding team, such as no-balls, wides, byes and leg byes. These runs don’t count towards a batsman’s personal score but add to the team’s total.

Strike rotation, achieved by batsmen running odd numbers of runs, ensures both players face different bowlers, adding a layer of strategy. Effective strike rotation can disrupt a bowler’s rhythm and prevent them from settling into a consistent line and length, thereby creating scoring opportunities.

Cricket is known for its thrilling matches, but there’s one moment that truly keeps fans on the edge of their seats—the Super Over. When a game ends in a tie, this dramatic finale decides who takes home the win.

In a Super Over, each team has just one over (six balls) to score as many runs as possible. The twist? The pressure is immense, and every ball counts. It’s a battle for the fastest reflexes, the sharpest focus and nerves of steel.

It brings the excitement to new heights, often showcasing the best of a team’s hitters and bowlers. But what exactly are the rules behind this nail-biting finish, and how does it impact the outcome?

How it works

A Super Over is a one-over shootout to determine the winner of a tied match. Each team gets to bat for six balls (one over), and the team with the highest score at the end of the over is declared the winner.

Will Williams of the Kings dives over to save his wicket during the Super Smash T20 match between the Canterbury Kings and Wellington Firebirds at Hagley Oval on November 26, 2021. (Source: Kai Schwoerer/Getty Images)

The players must adapt quickly, as the pressure is intense: one bad delivery or a missed shot can change the game. If the Super Over also ends in a tie, the team with the most boundaries (fours and sixes) during the match is declared the winner.

Rules

Super Overs follow a straightforward rule set, but the stakes couldn’t be higher. The batting team selects its best hitter, while the bowling team chooses their most reliable bowler. A team gets one over (six balls), and every ball can be a potential game-changer.

The fielding side must have the same number of fielders as in a regular over, usually five players spread across the field. Only one hitter is allowed to bat at a time, and they must score as many runs as possible within the limited six-ball window. If a player is dismissed, another batsman replaces them for the remainder of the over.

Past examples

Some of cricket’s most dramatic moments have unfolded during Super Overs. The 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup Final between England and New Zealand stands out as one of the most unforgettable. The match ended in a tie, and so did the Super Over.

Naseem Khushi of Oman is bowled out by David Wiese of Namibia during the super over in the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup West Indies & USA 2024. (Source: Gareth Copley/Getty Images)

England, however, were crowned champions due to their higher number of boundaries scored throughout the match. It was a nail-biting finish that brought the world to a standstill. Another legendary moment came in the 2009 IPL final, where the Deccan Chargers triumphed over the Royal Challengers Bangalore in a tense Super Over.

Strategy

A successful Super Over strategy is a combination of skill, nerves and calculated decisions. The batting side needs to pick a hitter who is cool under pressure, while the bowling side must rely on a bowler who can consistently land deliveries in the right spot.

Teams often rely on aggressive stroke play, aiming for boundaries to maximize runs, but they also have to stay cautious of making risky shots that could result in dismissals. The pressure cooker environment forces players to focus entirely on the moment, with every decision having the potential to swing the game.

The Super Over isn’t just a rule; it’s a heart-pounding spectacle that brings the best of cricket’s intensity to the forefront. Whether you’re a seasoned fan or new to the game, this unique showdown is a thrilling way to experience cricket like never before.
