Tua Tagovailoa has struggled to find sustained success in Miami, and Dolphins legend Dan Marino has now revealed the real reason behind the former Alabama quarterback’s difficulties with the franchise.
Tua Tagovailoa has not lived up to the expectations that once surrounded him in Miami. Following his struggles with the Dolphins, franchise legend Dan Marino has pointed to what he believes is the single biggest reason behind the quarterback’s lack of success.

If anyone understands what it takes to succeed in Miami, it’s Dan Marino. The Hall of Fame quarterback remains one of the most respected voices within the organization, and when he speaks about the Dolphins, people listen.

Marino was recently asked on Mad Dog Sports Radio why the Dolphins have been unable to find long-term consistency at the quarterback position since his historic tenure. In his view, the issue comes down to one critical factor: a lack of pressure on Tua Tagovailoa.

“You have to have competition at that position and I think that’s probably where the Dolphins have to go,” Dan Marino told Mad Dog Sports Radio. “Just have competition there and see what that is. I’m not in the position to say it’s going to be free agency or the guys we have or whatever that may be, but I do know when you have competition at that position it’s going to make it better and better and that’s what the Dolphins need to do.”

Should the Dolphins give Tua Tagovailoa another chance?

Tagovailoa is set to earn $54 million in guaranteed money in 2026, a figure that significantly complicates Miami’s decision-making. While the Dolphins are reportedly exploring the possibility of moving on from him, paying that amount without Tagovailoa on the roster would be far from ideal.

Reports suggest Miami will attempt to trade the quarterback, though finding a willing partner may not be easy given his contract and inconsistent performance. As a result, starting over with a new quarterback is appealing from a football perspective—but keeping Tua for another season could make more sense financially.

Marino’s comments should resonate inside the Dolphins’ front office. Throughout his career, Tagovailoa has rarely faced real competition for the starting job, as Miami consistently treated him as the unquestioned foundation of a future dynasty.

As Tagovailoa’s future with the franchise remains uncertain, one thing is clear: whoever makes up the Dolphins’ quarterback room in 2026 must understand that the starting role should no longer be guaranteed. If Miami follows Marino’s advice, competition—not comfort—may finally define the position.

Decades of stars, records, and unforgettable Sundays have shaped the Miami Dolphins’ identity. Some names changed the game, others defined an era — all left a mark that still echoes through the franchise. <div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="SEO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/mike-mcdaniel-net-worth" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20250303_BUS_347656_Mike-McDaniel-1.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="Behind Mike McDaniel's laid-back style lies a brilliant mind that has not only led the Dolphins to success but also grown his fortune to millionaire figures.
The Miami Dolphins have stood as one of the NFL’s most recognizable teams, marked by eras of dominance, reinvention and enduring pride. Through the highs of championship runs, their history remains a benchmark of consistency.

Each decade brought a new identity — quarterbacks who redefined passing, defenses that set the tone and playmakers who kept Miami in the spotlight. Their legacy has been shaped as much by its icons as by its resilience on the field.

Names like Dan Marino highlight how the franchise made indelible history in the National Football League. Even if the Dolphins are missing the good old glory days, they have a history to be proud of.

Dan Marino

Dan Marino (Source: Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

When one searches for the very definition of pure, unadulterated passing talent, the conversation begins—and often ends—with Dan Marino. Taken in the legendary 1983 quarterback class, he single-handedly dragged the Dolphins into the modern aerial age with a right arm unlike any the league had ever seen. He was the ultimate gunslinger.

Unlike the ring-laden legends of his era, his genius resides in the indisputable, ahead-of-its-time passing volume he brought to the game. His sophomore season in 1984 instantly became the stuff of legend when he shattered NFL records with 5,084 passing yards and 48 touchdown passes, a mark that obliterated the previous record and stood untouched for two decades.

With a lightning-fast release that defensive coordinators couldn’t scheme around, Marino was the relentless engine of an unstoppable offense featuring the “Marks Brothers”, anchored by center Dwight Stephenson. He retired after 17 seasons holding nearly every major career passing record, cementing his legacy as a player whose individual excellence and revolutionary impact transcended the missing Super Bowl ring.

Bob Griese

Bob Griese (Source: NFL)

In an era where flash often grabs the spotlight, Bob Griese stands as the quintessential leader, a model of efficiency and poise. He wasn’t a gunslinger; he was a strategic architect, the cool-headed field general who dictated the pace for Don Shula’s dominant teams of the 1970s. He was the metronome for the offense that led the franchise to three consecutive Super Bowls, culminating in victories in Super Bowl VII and VIII.

His career-defining achievement, and the crowning glory of the franchise, was orchestrating the 1972 perfect season, a feat that remains unique in NFL history. Though he missed time that year due to injury, he returned to lead the team through the postseason, solidifying his irreplaceable role.

His game was built on intelligent decision-making, surgical accuracy, and seamlessly complementing a ground attack that featured Larry Csonka and the famed “No-Name Defense”. His understated yet highly effective leadership was paramount to establishing the Dolphins as an indisputable force.

Larry Csonka

Larry Csonka (Source: David Becker/Getty Images)

Larry Csonka didn’t just run with the football; he administered punishment. He was the absolute embodiment of power, a classic, line-smashing fullback whose relentless style defined the ground-and-pound attack of the Dolphins’ Golden Era in the early 1970s.

He was the central pillar of Miami’s clock-controlling offense, and his ferocious tenacity mirrored the gritty, winning mentality of those championship teams. The Hall of Famer churned out three straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons (1971-1973), a remarkable accomplishment given his constant, between-the-tackles usage.

His ultimate single-game performance came in the team’s second championship, Super Bowl VIII, where he was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after a bruising 145-yard, two-touchdown effort. Along with Mercury Morris, he was part of the first-ever pair of teammates in the NFL to each rush for over a thousand yards in a single season (1972). He was more than a running back; he was the spiritual anchor of the team.

Dwight Stephenson

Dwight Stephenson (Source: NFL)

While the scorers soak up the adoration, true mastery often resides in the trenches. Dwight Stephenson, despite an tragically short eight-year career, is universally regarded as one of the greatest centers in NFL history. The second-round pick was the formidable foundation that protected Dan Marino during the dawn of the “Marino Magic” era in the 1980s.

His brilliance stemmed not just from pure technical skill, but from a rare blend of athleticism and football intelligence. He was the undisputed leader who anchored an offensive line that allowed the fewest quarterback sacks in the NFL for a stunning six consecutive seasons (1982-1987).

This extraordinary run of protection is a testament to his dominance. A five-time First-Team All-Pro, his career was cut short by a severe knee injury in 1987. Yet, the impact he had in such a brief time was so profound he earned a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, forever recognized as the vital column that allowed Marino to rewrite the record books.

Jason Taylor

Jason Taylor (Source: Al Bello/Getty Images)

Few players in Dolphins history have combined explosive speed, relentless motor, and sheer game-changing ability quite like Jason Taylor. This defensive end/linebacker hybrid was a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks for over a decade, utilizing blinding quickness and perfect timing to terrorize the pocket.

He became the prototype for the modern edge rusher, and he remains the franchise’s all-time leader in sacks. His true genius, however, was his ability to create turnovers—he wasn’t just disrupting plays; he was ending drives and scoring points.

His career culminated in 2006, when he was rightfully named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year after a spectacular season that included 13.5 sacks, two interceptions, and a remarkable nine forced fumbles. A six-time Pro Bowler, Taylor’s presence on the field demanded adjustments from every offensive coordinator, leaving an indelible mark as a dominant and unforgettable defensive force.

Paul Warfield

Paul Warfield (Source: NFL)

When discussing the architects of the 1972 undefeated run and the consecutive championships, Paul Warfield is the essential, often-unseen piece of the puzzle. Acquired in a blockbuster trade from the Cleveland Browns in 1970, he instantly became the ultimate deep threat—a master route runner with game-changing speed that forced defenses to play deep.

Though the Dolphins’ dynasty was built on running the ball, his presence was the crucial element that made the ground game even more lethal. His ability to stretch the field vertically opened up massive holes underneath for the bulldozing runs of Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris.

During his five-year tenure in Miami, Warfield was a fixture in the Pro Bowl and a vital contributor to both Super Bowl victories. He demonstrated that even in a ball-control offense, having a player who can strike lightning-fast on any given down is paramount to sustained success.

Zach Thomas

Zach Thomas (Source: Getty Images)

Zach Thomas is a profound testament to the power of sheer will over physical limitations. Drafted in the fifth round and viewed by some as undersized for a middle linebacker, he proved his doubters spectacularly wrong by becoming the most prolific tackler in Miami Dolphins history.

His relentless motor, razor-sharp football instincts, and unparalleled work ethic allowed him to overcome any perceived size deficit. He was the passionate core of the Dolphins’ defense for over a decade, serving as the defensive quarterback who drove the intensity of the entire unit.

His staggering production earned him seven Pro Bowl selections and five First-Team All-Pro honors, a reflection of his consistent, elite play. He was recently enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, confirming his status as an all-time great whose fierce dedication and commitment left an undeniable, fiery mark on the franchise’s culture.

Nick Buoniconti

Nick Buoniconti (Source: Doug Benc/Getty Images)

Nick Buoniconti arrived in Miami in 1969 via a shrewd trade with the Boston Patriots—a trade so notorious for its lopsidedness that the Dolphins sent the Patriots little more than film of a third-string quarterback. Despite being notoriously undersized for a middle linebacker at a mere 5’11”, he brought an intensity and intellectual vigor that instantly anchored the fledgling defense.

He became the undisputed captain and brains of the famed “No-Name Defense”, calling the signals and directing the unit that became synonymous with Don Shula’s dynasty. He was a tackling machine, recording a team-record 162 tackles in 1973, and his hard-hitting, fiercely determined style epitomized the defense’s relentless attitude.

He was the emotional heartbeat of the teams that won Super Bowls VII and VIII, including the legendary 17-0 perfect season. His subsequent career as a lawyer and co-host of Inside the NFL, coupled with his tireless work for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, only burnished the legacy of this Hall of Fame warrior.

Larry Little

Larry Little (Source: Miami Dolphins)

If Larry Csonka was the bulldozer, Larry Little was the earthmover. Traded to Miami in 1969, he was quickly recognized as one of the most dominant offensive guards in the NFL, becoming the right guard fixture for the entire Dolphins dynasty. Undrafted out of college, he built his Hall of Fame career on raw power and intimidation, embodying the sheer force of Miami’s punishing rushing attack.

He revolutionized the position by taking on the responsibility of “pulling” out of the line to lead the powerful sweep plays—a task usually reserved for lighter linemen. His athleticism and brute strength allowed him to steamroll defenders in open space, creating the massive running lanes that defined the Dolphins’ 1970s success.

He earned First-Team All-NFL honors six times and was voted the AFC Offensive Lineman of the Year three straight seasons by the NFLPA, cementing his status as the premier interior blocker who spearheaded back-to-back Super Bowl wins.

Jim Langer

Jim Langer (Source: Miami Dolphins)

The journey of Jim Langer, from an obscure free agent cut by the Cleveland Browns to a Hall of Fame center, is one of the franchise’s most inspiring tales of perseverance. After joining the Dolphins in 1970, he toiled for two years before taking over the starting center role in 1972. It was a perfect fit, literally and figuratively.

He became the anchor of the legendary offensive line, known for his work ethic and quick, low-driving blocking. In that historic 1972 perfect season, he played every single offensive down, reportedly only requiring assistance on three of more than 500 blocking assignments—a nearly flawless display of individual dominance.

He was the “brains” of the line, responsible for calling all blocking assignments, and his consistent, durable play earned him six straight Pro Bowl selections. Langer’s rise from free agent afterthought to the cornerstone of a dynasty highlights the value of relentless effort over pedigree.

Richmond Webb

Richmond Webb (Source: Scott Halleran /Allsport)

When you have a quarterback with the generational passing talent of Dan Marino, securing his blindside is the most critical job on the field. For 11 seasons, that job belonged to Richmond Webb, the mammoth left tackle drafted ninth overall in 1990. Webb was an immediate success, quickly establishing himself as one of the elite pass protectors of his era and a perennial fixture in the Pro Bowl.

His arrival stabilized the left side of the line, providing Marino with the precious seconds he needed to utilize his quick release. He was remarkably consistent, making the Pro Bowl in each of his first seven NFL seasons—a Dolphins team record for consecutive selections.

Named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team, he combined a massive 6’6″ frame with surprising agility, allowing him to neutralize the best speed rushers in the league. His enduring partnership with Marino defined the offensive trench warfare for the Dolphins through the early 90s.

Cameron Wake

Cameron Wake (Source: Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)

The story of Cameron Wake is an improbable, cinematic tale of refusal to quit. After being signed and cut by the Giants, and then dominating the Canadian Football League, he finally found his true home with the Dolphins in 2009.

His success was a potent blend of speed, bend, and explosive power, turning him into one of the most dynamic edge rushers of the post-Marino era. He swiftly became a sack specialist, relentlessly pursuing quarterbacks and racking up 100.5 career sacks (second only to Jason Taylor in franchise history).

His 2012 season earned him First-Team All-Pro honors, and he developed a reputation for single-handedly changing the momentum of games—most memorably with a game-ending safety in overtime against the Bengals in 2013, one of only a few in NFL history. His improbable journey from CFL star to five-time Pro Bowler solidified his status as a modern-day legend.

Bryan Cox

Bryan Cox (Source: Otto Greule/ALLSPORT)

Bryan Cox brought an unapologetic edge and ferocious intensity to the Dolphins’ defense throughout the 1990s. Drafted in the fifth round in 1991, he was not just a player; he was the emotional lightning rod for the team, whose highly aggressive, physical style of play often pushed the envelope.

Starting as an outside linebacker, he quickly blossomed, earning his first of three Pro Bowl nods in his sophomore season after logging 14 sacks and five forced fumbles. He later shifted to middle linebacker, where he became the primary run-stopper and signal-caller.

He was a quintessential Don Shula player: tough, fearless, and relentlessly passionate, establishing a confrontational, hard-nosed identity for the defense during the peak of Dan Marino’s passing years. His intensity defined a defensive era for the franchise, serving as a constant spark plug both on the field and in the locker room.

A. J. Duhe

A. J. Duhe (Source: Miami Dolphins)

A. J. Duhe’s career is defined by a rare versatility and one monumental performance that instantly became Dolphins folklore. Drafted in the first round in 1977, he immediately made an impact, winning the 1977 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year as a defensive end. However, in a testament to his adaptability and the strategic mind of Don Shula, Duhe made a pivotal switch to inside linebacker in 1980, where he became an All-AFC performer.

While his career was unfortunately cut short by a series of injuries, his name is permanently etched in Miami history for a single afternoon. In the 1982 AFC Championship Game against the New York Jets, played in a torrential downpour, Duhe put on a performance for the ages.

He intercepted Jets quarterback Richard Todd an unbelievable three times, returning the final pick 35 yards for the game-sealing touchdown in a 14-0 victory. This iconic “Duhe Game” single-handedly secured the Dolphins’ trip to Super Bowl XVII, showcasing his supreme athleticism and uncanny nose for the ball in the biggest moment.

Bob Kuechenberg

Bob Kuechenberg playing for the Dolphins.

Bob Kuechenberg was a cornerstone of the Miami Dolphins’ offensive line during their golden era in the 1970s. Joining as an undrafted free agent, his versatility allowed him to excel at different positions, contributing to Miami’s back-to-back Super Bowl victories and playing a vital role in the Fins’ perfect 1972 season.

Kuechenberg’s blocking prowess was instrumental in the success of the Dolphins’ powerful running game, featuring stars like Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris. His tenacity and ability to play through injuries, such as a broken arm in Super Bowl VIII, exemplified the toughness that defined the Dolphins’ championship teams. He was rewarded with six Pro Bowl selections for his outstanding performances.

Beyond his on-field achievements, Kuechenberg’s legacy with the Dolphins is one of perseverance and professionalism. Even today, he is remembered as one of the best offensive linemen in Dolphins history, embodying the spirit of teamwork and resilience that continues to inspire the franchise.

Mark Duper

Mark Duper (Source: Rick Stewart/Getty Images)

Mark “Super” Duper was the quintessential vertical threat in the NFL’s most prolific passing attack of the mid-1980s. Alongside Mark Clayton, he formed the iconic “Marks Brothers” tandem, becoming a legendary target for Dan Marino’s explosive arm.

His background as a track star—he even competed in the Olympic trials—translated perfectly to the football field, giving him the straight-line speed to blow past defensive backs. A three-time Pro Bowl selection, he consistently stretched the field for the Dolphins, forcing defenses into deep coverage and opening up the intermediate passing game for his partner.

He surpassed the 1,000-yard receiving mark four times in his 11-year career with Miami, proving his longevity and effectiveness well into the 1990s. His spectacular downfield grabs and ability to win one-on-one matchups were foundational to the record-breaking aerial numbers put up by the Dolphins’ offense during the Marino era.

Mark Clayton

Mark Clayton (Source: Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)

If Mark Duper was the speed, Mark Clayton was the touchdown artist and precise route runner. Selected late in the 1983 draft, he quickly transformed from a punt returner into one of Dan Marino’s most trusted and productive targets. The synergy between Marino and Clayton was immediate and record-breaking.

In his breakout 1984 season, he led the league with a then-NFL record 18 receiving touchdowns, a figure that still ranks among the highest single-season totals ever. This performance earned him the first of his five Pro Bowl selections.

He holds the franchise records for career receiving touchdowns and was, for a time, half of the most prolific QB-WR duo in NFL history with Marino. His ability to find seams in the zone and secure contested catches in the red zone made him an absolute nightmare for opposing secondaries and a cornerstone of the Dolphins’ high-flying offense for a decade.

Ricky Williams

Ricky Williams (Source: Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

Ricky Williams‘ time in Miami was a thrilling, chaotic, and utterly dominant chapter in the franchise’s modern history. Traded to the Dolphins in 2002 after a massive blockbuster deal, he immediately delivered on his promise, bringing a punishing, relentless style of running that the franchise hadn’t seen since the Csonka era.

In his unforgettable 2002 season, he was an absolute workhorse, leading the entire NFL in rushing with an astounding 1,853 yards on 383 carries, earning First-Team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl nod. He set the Dolphins’ team record for most 100-yard rushing games and became the focal point of the offense.

Though his career was marked by unpredictable departures and returns—adding a layer of enigmatic complexity to his story—his best seasons in Miami established him as one of the most physically gifted and productive running backs ever to wear the aqua and orange. He remains the second-leading rusher in franchise history.

Nat Moore

Nat Moore (Source: Miami Dolphins)

Nat Moore’s 13-year career with the Miami Dolphins spanned the eras of two Hall of Fame quarterbacks, Bob Griese and Dan Marino, solidifying his role as one of the most beloved and consistent receivers in team history. Drafted as a running back, he was converted to wide receiver, where his reliable hands and courage over the middle made him a highly trusted target.

He led the NFL in receiving touchdowns in 1977 and is immortalized for his legendary “helicopter catch,” a famous highlight where he was leveled by two defenders and spun airborne, yet held onto the ball. Beyond the field, his legacy is defined by his character.

He was named the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year in 1984 for his outstanding community service. Serving as a crucial mentor to young receivers Mark Duper and Mark Clayton, he was the epitome of a team leader whose influence extended far beyond his 510 career receptions.

Junior Seau

Junior Seau (Source: Jamie Mullen/NFLPhotoLibrary)

While the entirety of Junior Seau‘s legendary career belongs to the entire NFL, his three-season tenure with the Dolphins in the mid-2000s saw the veteran linebacker bring a rare, infectious level of passion and intensity to the defense. Traded to Miami in 2003, he was already a 12-time Pro Bowler and an undeniable force, but his time in South Florida proved his immediate leadership capability.

In his first year with the Dolphins (2003), he started 15 games and was an immediate defensive standout for the 10-6 team, demonstrating his unrivaled instincts and hitting power.

Although subsequent seasons were hampered by injuries, his arrival injected a veteran presence and an undeniable swagger into the locker room. Though he is more famous as a Charger, his brief but impactful stop in Miami provided a vital, hard-hitting defensive identity during a transitional period for the franchise.

Tony Nathan

Tony Nathan (Source: George Rose/Getty Images)

Tony Nathan’s nine-year career with the Dolphins (1979–1987) was a testament to versatility and clutch play, transitioning seamlessly from the ground-oriented offense of the late 70s into a critical component of Dan Marino’s aerial attack. Drafted out of Alabama, where he was a national champion, he became the rare running back who excelled equally as a runner and a receiver, finishing his career with nearly identical totals in rushing and receiving yards.

He was the starting running back in both Super Bowl XVII and Super Bowl XIX, proving his value on the biggest stage. His finest postseason moment came in “The Epic in Miami,” the 1981 Divisional Playoff against the Chargers, where he was integral to the legendary “Hook and Lateral” play.

His superb performance in Super Bowl XIX, which included 10 receptions (then the second-most in Super Bowl history), underscored his role as a dependable, multi-faceted weapon that became an offensive MVP for the team in 1981.

Patrick Surtain

Patrick Surtain (Source: Eliot Schechter/Allsport)

Patrick Surtain emerged in the late 1990s as one half of a dynamic, modern cornerback tandem, quickly establishing himself as one of the NFL’s premier shutdown defenders. Drafted in 1998, his seven seasons in Miami cemented his place as an elite ball-hawk and tackler, providing the Dolphins with the kind of defensive backfield anchor the team needed in the post-Marino transitional years.

He was a model of consistency and big-play ability, accumulating 29 interceptions (tied for fourth in franchise history) during his time in aqua and orange. His peak came between 2002 and 2004, a dominant stretch that earned him three consecutive Pro Bowl selections and First-Team All-Pro honors in 2002.

His ability to lock down his side of the field allowed the Dolphins defense to take calculated risks, and his disciplined, physical coverage became the standard for the secondary well into the 2000s. His son, Patrick Surtain II, now carries on the Pro Bowl tradition in the NFL.

John Offerdahl

John Offerdahl (Source: Miami Dolphins)

John Offerdahl’s career with the Dolphins began with a bang and sustained a high level of excellence until injuries intervened. The inside linebacker, chosen as the team’s first pick in 1986, made history by being selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his first five NFL seasons, a remarkable feat of instant dominance and consistency.

Dubbed the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1986, he brought tenacity and an uncanny nose for the ball to the middle of the defense during the heart of the Dan Marino era. His draft stock famously soared after he gave an eye-popping performance against Bo Jackson in the Senior Bowl.

While injuries regrettably cut his career short in 1993, his five Pro Bowls in eight seasons secure his place as one of the most productive and consistent linebackers in franchise history. His legacy is uniquely tied to South Florida as he also became a successful entrepreneur, founding his well-known chain of bagel and café restaurants while still playing.

Dick Anderson

Dick Anderson (Source: Miami Dolphins)

Dick Anderson was a vital, hard-hitting component of the “No-Name Defense,” patrolling the deep secondary with instinct and ferocity during the Dolphins’ championship era. Drafted in 1968, he made an instant impression, sharing the AFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Paired with Jake Scott, the duo formed one of the most formidable safety tandems of the 1970s.

His individual career apex came in 1973, when he was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, a season that included a stunning, record-tying four interceptions in a single game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time Super Bowl champion, he possessed exceptional ball skills, retiring as the Dolphins’ second all-time leading interceptor. His impact was so profound that he was named to the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team, cementing his status as a true defensive stalwart.

Bill Stanfill

Bill Stanfill (Source: Southeastern Conference)

Before sacks were officially recorded, Bill Stanfill was the Dolphins’ original and dominant sack artist. The Outland Trophy winner was the team’s first-round pick in 1969 and immediately anchored the defensive line during the championship run. He played with a unique blend of size, speed, and raw athletic grace—so much so that legendary coach Vince Dooley called him “the greatest athlete as a lineman I ever coached”.

He was a devastating pass rusher on the famed “No-Name Defense,” creating chaos in opposing backfields. Although unofficial, his 18.5 sacks in the 1973 season remains the highest single-season mark in franchise history.

He was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and a critical starter on both Super Bowl-winning teams. Don Shula praised his toughness and fierce competitive spirit, recognizing him as a key, yet often unsung, reason for the defense’s overall success.

Dan Marino, one of the greatest players in Miami Dolphins history, leaves Tom Brady out when naming the best QB the NFL has ever seen.
Debates over who the greatest players in NFL history are have always sparked passionate discussion — and Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino wasn’t about to sit this one out. The Hall of Famer weighed in with his pick for the best quarterback he’s ever seen play, notably leaving out Tom Brady for a very particular reason.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="SEO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/top-nfl-players-who-never-won-a-championship" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20241231_BUS_303942_Dan-Marino-and-Barry-Sanders.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="Throughout NFL history, some of the most talented players never achieved the coveted ring.
Several names are regularly thrown into the mix when it comes to the greatest signal-caller the league has ever seen. Some even believe that current stars—like Patrick Mahomes—could very well join that conversation in the not-so-distant future.

However, when it came time to make his pick, Marino didn’t hesitate to name four-time Super Bowl champion and San Francisco 49ers icon Joe Montana.

“He [Montana] was the best I’ve ever seen,” the former Dolphins standout claimed during an appearance at the Fanatics Fest event.

Joe Montana and Dan Marino speak onstage at Fanatics Fest NYC 2025 at Javits Center on June 21, 2025 in New York City.

When explaining why he didn’t choose the legendary Patriots quarterback, Marino couldn’t ignore a controversial incident that remains a topic of debate to this day: “Tom Brady was pretty good too, but he had deflated balls.”

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nba/not-michael-jordan-nfl-legend-tom-brady-names-the-greatest-nba-player-of-all-time" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20250621_BUS_423297_GettyImages-2221191608-1.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="NFL legend and former quarterback Tom Brady revealed who he believes is the greatest player in NBA history — and it's not Michael Jordan.

The controversial Deflategate scandal

The Deflategate scandal, which occurred during the 2014 AFC Championship, involved accusations that the New England Patriots intentionally deflated footballs. The NFL‘s investigation concluded it was “more probable than not” that balls were tampered with and that Tom Brady was “at least generally aware.” This led to Brady’s four-game suspension, a team fine, and loss of draft picks, sparking intense debate about the Patriots’ integrity.

For many, Deflategate cast a shadow on Brady’s career, making them question his GOAT status. Critics argue it suggests a willingness to cheat for an advantage, implying his success wasn’t purely skill-based. While supporters dismiss it as minor, the lingering perception of wrongdoing continues to influence opinions, preventing some from considering him the undisputed greatest player.

Montana’s greatest achievements

Joe Montana’s unparalleled success in the biggest games is a key reason many, including Dan Marino, consider him the GOAT. Montana famously led the San Francisco 49ers to four Super Bowl victories in the 1980s, winning Super Bowl MVP honors three times.

He was renowned for his calm demeanor under pressure, earning the nickname “Joe Cool” for his ability to lead game-winning drives. His consistent clutch play and perfect SB record cemented his reputation as the ultimate winner.

Marino, a contemporary of Montana, often highlights his rival’s exceptional talent and precision. While he held numerous passing records, he acknowledged Montana’s unique ability to elevate his team to championships, which ultimately set him apart in the eyes of many peers and fans alike.

Some football fans believe the Kansas City Chiefs are receiving favorable treatment from referees, and now an NFL legend has taken a subtle jab at Patrick Mahomes over the controversy.
In recent years, the Kansas City Chiefs have been accused of receiving preferential treatment. Now, it is the turn of an NFL legend to take a subtle jab at Patrick Mahomes and his team over this alleged favoritism from referees.

A few years ago, the New England Patriots built a dominant dynasty in the NFL. However, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick faced heavy criticism from some fans who believed they received help from officials during their successful seasons.

Now that their dynasty is over, a new one has emerged—with similar controversy. The Chiefs are under heavy scrutiny for alleged favoritism from referees, with even former players criticizing them over these accusations.

Dan Marino takes subtle jab at Patrick Mahomes and NFL referees

In recent years, the Chiefs, led by Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, and Travis Kelce, have established a powerhouse in the NFL. However, their success is not universally appreciated, as some fans attempt to attribute their dominance to outside factors.

Many fans have accused the Chiefs of receiving favorable treatment from referees. Some of their calls have sparked controversy, leading critics to suggest that officials give them special treatment.

One of the most debated penalties involving the Chiefs is roughing the passer. According to detractors, Patrick Mahomes is virtually untouchable, and Dan Marino may be among those questioning the fairness of these calls.

The legendary Dolphins quarterback recently took a subtle jab at Mahomes and the Chiefs. He remarked that quarterbacks today enjoy a more comfortable existence, knowing that officials will protect them from defenders—an issue Mahomes has been heavily criticized for.

Former Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino looks on prior to a game between the Miami Dolphins and the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on September 22, 2024 in Seattle, Washington.

“The mental part of it you’d feel more comfortable, for sure, you know you can’t get hit in the knees or hit in the face. Can you be better because of that? Yes, I would say so. At least you would be more available and healthy,” Marino said for PFT Live. “And nowadays they just rub them a little bit and it’s a flag.”

Is Patrick Mahomes really being protected by NFL Referees?

In recent years, the NFL has made a concerted effort to protect quarterbacks—not just Mahomes, but all signal-callers. As the faces of the league, they are safeguarded through stricter rules aimed at preventing injuries from late hits.

Joe Montana, widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, recently ranked five quarterbacks. Notably, Patrick Mahomes tied with Peyton Manning on Montana's list.
The debate over the greatest NFL quarterback of all time remains a hot topic, with several contenders vying for the crown. One of the most iconic players in the position, Joe Montana, recently weighed in on the discussion by naming his top five quarterbacks, a list that includes both modern stars like Patrick Mahomes and legends such as Peyton Manning.

As part of a feature for Sports Illustrated ahead of Super Bowl LVIII, Montana was asked on social media to rank five NFL quarterbacks based on their style of play and overall impact on the league. Without hesitation, the four-time Super Bowl champion crafted his own list, explaining his reasoning along the way.

Taking the top spot in Montana’s rankings was a tie between NFL legend Dan Marino and New England Patriots icon Tom Brady. “I made my own rules,” Montana quipped when asked why he allowed two players to share the number one position on his list.

In second place, Montana paired Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes with Indianapolis Colts great Peyton Manning, highlighting their exceptional influence on the game. Rounding out his list in third place was former Green Bay Packers standout Aaron Rodgers, who Montana felt deserved his spot without sharing it with another name.

Former quarterback Joe Montana.

Mahomes poised to surpass Montana’s playoff milestone

The AFC Divisional Round matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills promises high stakes, with Mahomes aiming to etch his name deeper into NFL history. Mahomes, set to start for the Chiefs, has his sights on surpassing Montana’s storied playoff milestone, an achievement that has stood as a benchmark for greatness.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/49ers-icon-joe-montana-chooses-the-best-quarterback-in-nfl-history-not-tom-brady-or-himself" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20250115_BUS_314308_Joe-Montana-San-Francisco-49ers-legend.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="Joe Montana, a legendary quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers and widely regarded as one of the greatest players in NFL history, revealed his choice for the best quarterback of all time—and it’s not Tom Brady.

Montana’s postseason legacy includes 17 playoff victories and five Super Bowl starts, a testament to his dominance during the most critical games. A win against the Bills would not only push Mahomes closer to Montana’s playoff win total but also strengthen the Chiefs’ path to another championship appearance. As Kansas City continues to perform at an elite level, Mahomes appears well-positioned to extend his own postseason records.

Could Mahomes one day surpass Tom Brady?

With the Chiefs firing on all cylinders and Mahomes leading the charge, the star quarterback may eventually turn his focus to another NFL legend: Tom Brady. While catching Brady in Pro Bowl appearances may not be the priority, the ultimate goal remains matching or surpassing his Super Bowl victories. With three championships already under his belt, Mahomes is prepared to lead Kansas City past the Bills and pursue a fourth NFL title.

Turning 30 years old in 2025, Mahomes still has plenty of time to chase Brady’s record. Barring significant injuries, his combination of talent and leadership makes this an attainable goal. However, much will depend on the continuity of the Chiefs’ roster and Mahomes’ ability to maintain peak performance in the years ahead. Time will ultimately tell if he can reach Brady’s historic milestones.

In the NFL, the Super Bowl ring is the ultimate prize, the definitive symbol of collective success. However, throughout history, there have been players whose careers shone brightly but who never had the chance to lift that trophy.

From quarterbacks who redefined the passing game to running backs whose agility dazzled both fans and rivals alike, these athletes left an indelible mark on the sport, like Dan Marino and Barry Sanders.

Their stories are a testament to exceptional talent and dedication, even though the championship eluded them. Check out the 15 NFL stars who became legends but never managed to take home a ring…

The 15 NFL stars who never won a ring

Dan Marino (QB)

Former Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino looks on prior to a game between the Miami Dolphins and the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on September 22, 2024. (Source: Steph Chambers/Getty Images)

Known as one of the most prolific passers in NFL history, Dan Marino redefined the quarterback role in modern football. Over his 17 seasons with the Miami Dolphins, he set passing records that seemed untouchable at the time, including the single-season passing yard record (5,084 in 1984), which stood for decades.

His ability to throw with surgical precision, even under pressure, made him an icon of the aerial game. However, his career is marked by the absence of a Super Bowl win, despite leading the Dolphins to the big game in 1985, where they were defeated by Joe Montana’s 49ers. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005, he exemplifies how unparalleled individual talent doesn’t always guarantee collective success.

Barry Sanders (RB)

Former Detroit Lions player Barry Sanders is honored during the game against the Seattle Seahawks at Ford Field on September 17, 2023. (Source: Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)

Considered by many as the greatest running back of all time, Barry Sanders captivated fans and critics with his elusive and unpredictable running style. Playing for the Detroit Lions, he amassed over 15,000 rushing yards in just ten seasons, ranking among the NFL’s all-time leaders.

His skills were so remarkable that every play seemed like a masterpiece, capable of changing a game’s outcome instantly. However, the team around him rarely matched his talent. The Lions managed only one playoff win during his career, and Sanders, frustrated with the lack of competitiveness, retired in 1999 while still at his peak. His legacy as one of the most talented players without a championship remains undisputed.

Jim Kelly (QB)

Jim Kelly #12 of the Buffalo Bills gets ready to pass the ball during the game against the Atlanta Falcons on November 12, 1995. (Source: Getty Images)

Jim Kelly epitomizes resilience and perseverance. As the leader of the Buffalo Bills, he achieved a feat few teams have matched: reaching four consecutive Super Bowls (1991-1994). While the Bills lost all four, the achievement of consistently leading his team to the top of the AFC is undeniable.

He was the centerpiece of the famous “K-Gun offense”, an innovative system that revolutionized NFL tempo and strategy. His ability to stand firm in the pocket and deliver precise passes made him a nightmare for opposing defenses. Despite never lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy, his impact on the game earned him a Hall of Fame induction in 2002.

Warren Moon (QB)

Warren Moon speaks on SiriusXM at Super Bowl LVIII on February 07, 2024. (Source: Cindy Ord/Getty Images for SiriusXM)

Warren Moon was a trailblazer both on and off the field. After facing racial barriers that initially kept him out of the NFL, he began his professional career in the CFL, winning five consecutive championships before joining the Houston Oilers.

He became one of the best passers of his generation, amassing over 49,000 passing yards in his NFL career. Known for his powerful arm and leadership of explosive offenses, he faced heartbreaking playoff defeats that kept him from reaching a Super Bowl. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006, his career celebrated his talent and role as a role model for future generations.

Cris Carter (WR)

Former NFL player and NFL Hall of Fame player Cris Carter attends SiriusXM at Super Bowl LII Radio Row at the Mall of America on February 1, 2018. (Source: Cindy Ord/Getty Images for SiriusXM)

Legendary wide receiver Cris Carter was renowned for his clutch catches and unmatched work ethic. Playing mainly for the Minnesota Vikings, he amassed over 13,000 receiving yards and 130 touchdowns.

He mastered precise routes and had a knack for turning impossible plays into touchdowns. However, the teams he played on never reached the Super Bowl, often falling just short. Despite this, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013, a testament to his impact on the sport.

Alan Faneca (OG)

Alan Faneca of the Pittsburgh Steelers poses for his 2005 NFL headshot at photo day. (Source: Getty Images)

A true giant on the offensive line, Alan Faneca anchored the Pittsburgh Steelers for nearly a decade. His ability to open running lanes and protect quarterbacks made him one of the most respected linemen of his era.

A nine-time Pro Bowler, he was pivotal in dominant offenses. Although he eventually won a Super Bowl in 2006 with the Steelers, this came later in his career when his prime contributions were behind him.

Terrell Owens (WR)

Receiver Terrell Owens #81 of the Buffalo Bills celebrates a touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium on November 22, 2009. (Source: Marc Serota/Getty Images)

Terrell Owens, or “T.O.”, was one of the most polarizing and talented receivers in NFL history. Combining speed, strength and catching ability, he was an offensive powerhouse, amassing over 15,000 receiving yards during his career.

However, controversies on and off the field sometimes overshadowed his talent. His sole Super Bowl appearance came with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004, where he delivered a stellar performance despite a severe injury, though his team lost to the New England Patriots. Owens’ legacy remains one of the most debated and celebrated in the NFL.

Lenny Moore (RB/WR)

Lenny Moore (Source: Kyle Lindemann – @@LuckIsMadeFF)

Lenny Moore was a pioneer of versatility, excelling as both a running back and receiver. During his 12-season career with the Baltimore Colts in the 1950s and 1960s, he amassed over 12,000 combined yards and 113 touchdowns.

Known for his ability to evade defenders and score from anywhere, he was a cornerstone of the Colts’ offense. Although his best years didn’t coincide with major championships, his influence as a precursor to modern dual-threat players remains significant.

Dick Butkus (LB)

Former Chicago Bear Dick Butkus is seen on the sideline during the game between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field on September 10, 2023. (Source: Quinn Harris/Getty Images)

Dick Butkus is synonymous with toughness and defensive dominance. Regarded as one of the greatest linebackers ever, he spent his entire career with the Chicago Bears, where his instincts and aggression terrorized opponents.

His physicality and leadership were unparalleled, making him the core of a defense that was always respected despite the team’s lack of consistent success. Though he never won a championship, his legacy as the gold standard for NFL linebackers transcends Super Bowl rings.

Derrick Thomas (OLB)

Derrick Thomas (Source: @PSchrags)

Derrick Thomas was one of the most dynamic and intimidating pass rushers in NFL history. Playing for the Kansas City Chiefs, he racked up 126.5 sacks, including 20 in a single season—a feat that still ranks among the all-time best.

Known for his explosive speed and impeccable technique, he could change the game with a single play. Despite his individual dominance, the Chiefs never made it to a Super Bowl during his tenure. Thomas’ tragic death in 2000 left a void in the NFL, but his legacy endures as one of the greatest defenders ever.

Steve Largent (WR)

Former Seattle Seahawks player Steve Largent is honored during the second intermission during the game between the Seattle Kraken and the Vegas Golden Knights on January 01, 2024. (Source: Steph Chambers/Getty Images)

Steve Largent epitomized consistency and excellence during his career with the Seattle Seahawks. While he lacked the explosive speed of some contemporaries, his precision route-running and reliable hands made him a standout.

He was the first receiver to surpass 13,000 yards and scored over 100 touchdowns, setting multiple records at retirement. Despite his individual brilliance, Largent never played in a Super Bowl. His #80 jersey was retired by Seattle, and his influence as a dependable, clutch receiver remains a benchmark in the NFL.

Fran Tarkenton (QB)

Presenter Fran Tarkenton during the NFL Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium on August 8, 2015. (Source: Joe Robbins/Getty Images)

Fran Tarkenton, a legend of the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants, was a pioneer of the mobile quarterback long before this style of play became popular. Over his 18 seasons, he amassed more than 47,000 passing yards and 342 touchdowns, making him the all-time leader in both categories at the time of his retirement.

He was also a master improviser, capable of evading defenders with his agility and extending plays in almost magical ways. Despite leading the Vikings to three Super Bowls, the team was never able to secure a championship.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1986, and his impact as an innovator at the quarterback position remains relevant in modern NFL play.

Tony Gonzalez (TE)

Tight end Tony Gonzalez #88 of the Atlanta Falcons celebrates after catching a 10-yard touchdown in the second quarter against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game in 2013. (Source: Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

Considered by many as the greatest tight end in NFL history, Tony Gonzalez revolutionized the position with his ball-catching ability and longevity on the field. During his career with the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons, he amassed over 15,000 receiving yards and 111 touchdowns, both all-time records for a tight end.

Despite being a perennial Pro Bowl selection and a dominant player, he never had the opportunity to play in a Super Bowl. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2019, cementing his legacy as one of the NFL’s greatest players, championship or not.

LaDainian Tomlinson (RB)

Chargers runningback LaDainian Tomlinson on the sidelines late in the game as the San Diego Chargers defeated the Oakland Raiders by a score of 27 to 14 in 2005. (Source: Robert B. Stanton/NFLPhotoLibrary)

LaDainian Tomlinson or “LT”, was one of the most explosive and versatile running backs in NFL history. During his career, primarily with the San Diego Chargers, he totaled over 18,000 yards and set the single-season touchdown record (31 in 2006), a record that still stands.

His ability to score from anywhere on the field made him a phenomenon. However, despite leading powerful offenses and multiple playoff appearances, he never reached a Super Bowl. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017 and is remembered as one of the greatest running backs of all time.

Bruce Smith (DE)

Bruce Smith #78 of the Washington Redskins is looking on during the Redskins Training Camp at the Redskins Park in 2000. (Source: Ezra O. Shaw /Allsport)

Bruce Smith, one of the most dominant defensive ends in NFL history, holds the all-time sack record with 200 over his illustrious career. A cornerstone of the Buffalo Bills’ defense during their four consecutive Super Bowl appearances in the early 1990s, his relentless pursuit of quarterbacks made him a nightmare for opposing offenses.

Despite his team’s inability to secure a championship, Smith’s impact on the game was undeniable. He was a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and an 11-time Pro Bowl selection. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009, he remains a symbol of defensive excellence.

Check out some of the most famous players who experienced serious financial problems.
Most sports fans tend to assume that once pro athletes retire, they have saved enough money to live comfortably for the rest of their lives. To be fair, it’s not wrong to assume that NFL and NBA stars are set for life. However, there are always exceptions to this. After all, former athletes aren’t always responsible when it comes to managing money, just like the rest of us.

But if they make a financial error, it ends up costing them millions. In fact, there is a surprisingly long list of former NFL and NBA players who lost millions of dollars and sometimes lost everything after retiring. Some of these stories are crazy to think about and hard to believe, but let’s check out some of the most famous NFL and NBA players who experienced serious financial problems after their playing days were over.

Delonte West

(Getty Images)

West, once a promising NBA player known for his versatility and tenacity on the court, faced a stark reversal of fortune after retiring from professional basketball. Despite earning millions during his career, West’s financial woes emerged as a distressing reality post-retirement. Battling with mental health issues and substance abuse, West struggled to manage his finances effectively, leading to a rapid depletion of his wealth. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges athletes often face in transitioning from the spotlight of professional sports to the uncertainties of life after retirement.

As news of West’s financial struggles surfaced, it sparked discussions about the importance of financial literacy and mental health support for athletes transitioning out of sports. While his journey embodies the pitfalls that can accompany sudden wealth and fame, it also highlights the need for greater awareness and resources to assist athletes in navigating life beyond their playing days. Despite the setbacks, there remains hope for West’s future as he seeks to rebuild his life and inspire others with his resilience in overcoming adversity.

Chris Andersen

(Getty Images)

Andersen, affectionately known as the “Birdman” during his NBA career, experienced a tumultuous journey post-retirement that saw him facing significant financial challenges. Despite earning millions during his time in professional basketball, Andersen found himself grappling with financial instability after retiring from the sport. Poor financial management, coupled with unexpected expenses and investments gone awry, contributed to Andersen’s financial downfall, highlighting the importance of financial literacy and planning for athletes transitioning out of their playing careers.

Andersen’s story serves as a cautionary tale, shedding light on the harsh realities that many athletes face once the cheers fade and the paychecks stop coming. His experience underscores the need for comprehensive support systems and education programs to help athletes navigate the complexities of managing their finances and planning for life after retirement. As Andersen works to rebuild his financial standing and forge a new path forward, his journey serves as a reminder of the importance of resilience and seeking assistance when facing financial challenges.

Vince Young

(Getty Images)

It took just seven years for Young to go from the third overall pick in the NFL Draft to filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. His financial advisor blames it on Young spending money faster than he was making it. That says a lot for a guy whose rookie contract was worth nearly $26 million in guaranteed money.

For what it’s worth, spending tens of millions of dollars isn’t easy, although Young made it look easy. He would buy expensive cars and just about anything else with a high price tag. Yet, when he filed for Chapter 11, Young’s assets were worth less than $1 million and he owed upwards of $10 million. He also lasted just six years in the NFL, so Young didn’t have a good way to get out of debt quickly.

Chris McAlister

(Getty Images)

After being a top-10 pick, McAlister spent a decade playing for the Ravens. He was a three-time Pro Bowler in Baltimore and won a Super Bowl ring when the Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV. At one point, he signed a seven-year, $55 million contract, so money shouldn’t have been a problem for him, even though McAlister declined swiftly and ended up being cut by the Saints midway through what would become his final season in the NFL.

McAlister last played in 2009, but by 2011, he was already in a bad place financially. We don’t know where the money went, but in 2011, McAlister asked a court to reduce his monthly child support payments. McAlister has a daughter despite only being married for three months. On his application for reduced childcare payments, he claimed that he was living with his parents, who were covering his living costs. In other words, he fell a long way in a short period of time.

Ray Williams

(Getty Images)

Williams played in the NBA for different teams over his nine-year career, earning roughly $2.5 million. He was at his best during the 1980s, averaging at least 19 points per game over three straight seasons for the Knicks and Nets. Even though he never made the All-Star Team, there were times when he was a bucket waiting to happen. However, soon after his retirement in 1987, things fell apart.

Williams applied for his NBA pension soon after retiring due to financial difficulties. After declaring bankruptcy in 1994, received his $200,000 NBA pension. But then he moved to Florida with that money and became the victim of a real estate scam. That money disappeared quickly and Williams ended up living in his car before some of his former teammates rallied to help get him back on his feet. Sadly, Williams passed away from colon cancer in 2013 at the age of 58.

Kenny Anderson

(Getty Images)

The best years of Anderson’s 14-year NBA career came during his early days with the Nets. That’s when he made the All-Star Team in 1994 when he scored a career-high 18.8 points per game. While he declined during the second half of his career, Anderson was able to play in the league for a long time. For his career, Anderson averaged 12.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. He also took home over $63 million in salary before retiring.

Despite making tons of money, Anderson found himself in a difficult financial situation during his retirement due to a variety of reasons. He had multiple DUI charges and also fathered seven kids with five different women, so child support payments and divorce settlements drained his savings in a big way. Anderson also battled psychological and emotional problems in addition to financial hardships. However, Anderson was able to pull himself out of financial trouble with his journey being documented in the 2017 documentary Mr. Chibbs.

Andre Rison

(Getty Images)

Rison had something of a rollercoaster career despite being one of the most talented wide receivers of his generation. He was a five-time Pro Bowler who spent his best years with the Falcons and also won a Super Bowl ring as a member of the Packers. The guy with the nickname Bad Moon finished his career with over 10,000 receiving yards and 84 touchdowns. He later played in the CFL and won a Grey Cup.

Off the field, Rison had some issues. He had a turbulent relationship with Lisa Lopes of the group TLC, a relationship that included Lopes being charged with arson. Rison also led an extravagant lifestyle, frequently paying the tab for an entire group of friends while at clubs and reportedly spending $1 million on jewels. Naturally, the money ran out, forcing Rison to file for bankruptcy in 2007 when he had trouble with childcare payments. Later, Rison became a high school coach but surely had to adopt a more modest lifestyle with that kind of salary.

Sidney Moncrief

(Getty Images)

Currently, there are no records of Moncrief’s earnings during his 11-year NBA career, although his estimated earnings are around $7.2 million. His most notable years came with the Bucks with Moncrief being a five-time all-star. But perhaps his biggest claim to fame is being the first guard to win Defensive Player of the Year honors twice, making him one of the best two-way guards in NBA history.

However, the millions he made as a player disappeared quickly. After retiring, Moncrief started a car business in his native Arkansas and worked as an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks. From there, we’re not sure what happened, but Moncrief declared bankruptcy in 2005 with several car dealerships and even a local newspaper on his list of debtors. While trying to sort out his financial woes, Moncrief worked as a coach for the Fort Worth Flyers in the NBA G-League and a sports analyst for Fox Sports.

Travis Henry

(Getty Images)

Being a parent can be expensive. Just fathering kids can also be expensive. The latter is part of what got Henry into financial trouble. The former NFL running back has fathered at least 11 children with 10 different mothers. That’s a lot of child support payments that have to go to a lot of different people.

Not surprisingly, Henry had trouble keeping up and he was arrested in 2009 for failing to pay child support. His lawyer said that Henry had to pay around $170,000 per year in child support. Keep in mind his immaturity and drug use caused the Broncos to dump Henry one year into a five-year, $22.5 million contract that ended his career. With other legal problems on top of his child support payments, Henry ended up going broke.

Adrian Peterson

(Getty Images)

Peterson’s career was filled with both highs and lows. He’s likely to be remembered as one of the best running backs of all time. Peterson won MVP honors in 2012 when he rushed for over 2,000 yards and still owns the record for most rushing yards in a single game. He was also a seven-time Pro Bowler and had a career that was far longer than the average running back, helping him to earn well over $100 million in salary.

Unfortunately, Peterson has had several legal problems along the way. He also made several bad investments and then had to take out loans to cover up those investments. Ultimately, he owed several million dollars to multiple creditors with courts forcing him to multiple settlements after he defaulted on loans. In fact, one reason why Peterson’s career lasted so long is he had to keep playing so he could pay back what he owed.

Rick Mahorn

(Getty Images)

When you consider that Mahorn made less in 18 seasons than some players in his identical capacity today make in a single season, it makes his financial problems a little more believable. For his career, Mahorn took home an estimated $8.5 million in salary. While he never filled up the stat sheet, he was a key part of the Pistons during their 1989 title run. He eventually retired averaging 6.9 points per game for his career.

It was about 10 years that Mahorn was hit by financial difficulties. Despite having both an NBA pension and a healthy salary as a WNBA coach, Mahorn declared bankruptcy in 2009. After defaulting on his mortgage, he owed the IRS $200,000. Fortunately, serving as a broadcaster for the Pistons and serving as a coach in rapper Ice Cube’s Big3 league helped to get Mahorn out of the red financially.

Johnny Unitas

(Getty Images)

If only Unitas was as good at making investments as he was at playing quarterback. In 1984, he invested a huge percentage of his life savings in a company that quickly flamed out. By the early 90s, he and his wife were in serious financial trouble and declared bankruptcy after falling $3.2 million in debt.

In addition to financial ruin, Unitas suffered many physical consequences from his long career in football. His knees were bad and his right hand was quite limited. Sadly, Unitas had to live with those physical shortcomings and financial difficulties during the latter years of his life.

Erick Strickland

(Getty Images)

Strickland played nine NBA seasons with six different teams. His career stats were nothing special, averaging just 7.5 points per game. But those nine seasons in the league earned him around $13 million. However, most of that money would end up being lost thanks to someone who Strickland thought he could trust. Strickland was approached by a buddy with what he thought was a great real estate investment. Even Strickland’s father researched it for his son and found that it appeared to be a fruitful opportunity.

Strickland made an investment with the intention of selling the property for a significant profit. It turned out that the person he believed to be a friend had taken advantage of the Stricklands because the investment property wasn’t even worth half of what they had anticipated. Strickland and his friend had a falling out and the nest egg he built from his playing days was gone.

Michael Vick

(Getty Images)

At the peak of his career around 2006, Vick was one of the highest-earning athletes in the U.S. However, a slew of legal problems spelled disaster for his finances. He made bad investments and saw his former agents file a $45 million lawsuit against him. Amidst his dogfighting charges the following year, Vick was temporarily out of the NFL and lost endorsement deals.

In 2008, Vick had no choice but to file for bankruptcy after his finances continued to be managed poorly and money was thrown away while he was in prison. It was a complicated process, to say the least, as Vick had to sell several homes to help settle the debts. The silver lining is Vick was able to return to the NFL for seven more seasons, getting himself out of debt and rebuilding part of his fortune before retiring.

Derrick Coleman

(Getty Images)

Coleman may not be the best player to be drafted first overall, but he did parlay an exceptional college career at Syracuse into a solid NBA career. Coleman won Rookie of the Year honors in 1991 and was also an all-star in 1994. He played for four different teams, including two stints with the 76ers, over 15 seasons, averaging 16.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game during his career. Even if he never became a perennial all-star, Coleman was able to earn over $91 million during his career.

But just a few years after retiring in 2005, Coleman declared bankruptcy in 2010. Most of the blame for his money woes comes from excessive drinking and an extravagant lifestyle. However, Coleman eventually started making better decisions. He returned to school to get his degree and now serves as a spokesperson for Syracuse University while also working with at-risk kids. Coleman has also helped to campaign for clean water in his hometown of Flint, Michigan. He may not be living a rich and flashy lifestyle anymore, but Coleman is doing a lot of good in the world.

Raghib “Rocket” Ismail

(Getty Images)

Blessed with great speed, Ismail had a great college career at Notre Dame and then spent a couple of years as a star in the CFL before carving out a long career in the NFL. He was even the MVP of the Grey Cup in 1991. Ismail never reached Pro Bowl status in the NFL, although he had a pair of 1,000-yard seasons, which allowed him to earn enough money to be set for the rest of his life.

Of course, that’s not what happened with Ismail. He took his NFL nest egg and invested in several businesses, including a line of cosmetic surgery supplies, a rock-and-roll-themed restaurant, a calligraphy company, and a machine that was supposed to dispense prepaid phone cards. Each and every one of them failed, costing Ismail his fortune and essentially forcing him to work as a sports analyst and a Slamball coach in his retirement to make ends meet.

Randy Brown

(Getty Images)

An NBA journeyman, Brown is most remembered for his time spent with the Bulls from 1995 to 2000. During the majority of his career, Brown played off the bench and never averaged more than nine points or 3.5 rebounds per game. However, he had a strong defensive presence and was a frequent contributor off the bench during Chicago’s second three-peat. For his hard work, Brown took home a little over $15 million during this NBA career.

After retiring, Brown made the decision to go into business for himself, investing heavily in a number of restaurants and real estate ventures. Unfortunately Brown is another player who was misled by someone he considered a friend. After Brown’s investments failed, the Bulls hired him as their director of player development and eventually assistant GM to help save him from financial ruin.

Mark Brunell

(Getty Images)

After making roughly $50 million during his NFL career, Brunell ended up filing for bankruptcy in 2010 with just $5 million worth of assets and over $25 million in liabilities. After his playing days, Brunell was involved in some bad real estate investments and didn’t seem to have much of a knack for business.

Part of his business investment was purchasing a stake in nearly a dozen Whataburger locations, mostly in the Jacksonville area. But nearly half of those locations ended up failing and having to close. To help stabilize his finances, Brunell returned to the NFL in 2021 as quarterbacks coach of the Lions.

Mark Ingram Sr.

(Getty Images)

Before his son was a Heisman winner who had a long NFL career, Mark Ingram St. was a first-round pick who made a lot of money playing football. While his stats are a little underwhelming, the older Ingram spent 10 seasons in the NFL and won a Super Bowl with the Giants. But after he retired in 1996, his financial problems began. Ingram attempted to deceive the IRS while engaging in money laundering. He was caught and given a seven-year prison term, as well as some heavy fines.

Also, he failed to turn himself into authorities as required, which added many months to his sentence. After courts determined that he had broken the terms of his supervised release by having a firearm, failing to make a $500 monthly reparation payment, and failing to notify his probation officer of a change of address, he was sent back to jail in 2018, which was also costly financially. But perhaps his son can take care of him with the money he’s made from his NFL career.

Dan Issel

(Getty Images)

Issel is one of the best players in Nuggets’ history. He was a six-time All-ABA player, a seven-time NBA All-Star, and a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame. He played in the ABA with the Kentucky Colonels and then 10 seasons with the Nuggets. For his career, he averaged 22.6 points and 9.1 rebounds per game before returning to Denver with two stints as the head coach of the Nuggets. However, Issel had other interests besides basketball that would prove to be his downfall.

When Issel tried his hand in the business world, things went wrong, ultimately forcing him to declare bankruptcy in 2009. Issel reportedly had 34 different creditors and owed them a combined $4.5 million despite Issel taking home $18 million during his playing career. Some of the memorabilia from his career had to be auctioned off to pay off his debt, although Issel has been able to restore his good standing with the IRS.

Warren Sapp

(Getty Images)

Officially, Sapp made over $82 million as an NFL player. Even as an analyst, he was making $45,000 per month, which is a salary most people would take. However, Sapp found a way to lose it all and bungle his finances. Ultimately, he had no choice but to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with a total of $826 in his bank account.

With Sapp, financial problems likely came about because of careless spending. For instance, he spent $1,2000 on a lion-skin rug. Sapp owned an extensive shoe collection that included a pair of Jordan sneakers that cost $6,000. Eventually, all of his prized possessions were auctioned off, but even that wasn’t enough to pay off his debts, forcing Sapp to sell a 10,000-square-foot Florida home in 2012 to pay off everything he owed.

Dennis Rodman

(Getty Images)

In addition to being one of the most notable players in NBA history because of his antics and appearance, Rodman made over $25 million during his career as one of the top rebounders and defenders in the league. Unfortunately, he loved spending money even more than he loved rebounding. To his credit, Rodman has been described as a generous person who didn’t always spend money on himself.

Nevertheless, his spending habits got him into trouble, causing Rodman to go broke. He ended up owing $800,000 in child support and $50,000 in spousal support. A host of other legal issues over the years have also played a role in draining Rodman’s life savings. Of course, his tattoos serve as daily reminders of the money he spent on things that he can’t sell to get some of his money back.

Charlie Batch

(Getty Images)

Detroit. To his credit, he made for a decent backup in Pittsburgh for many years, winning two Super Bowls as a member of the Steelers. Even though he was a backup for most of his career, Batch was in the NFL from 1998 to 2012, which should have earned him enough money to live comfortably for the rest of his life. Backups don’t exactly make chump change, after all. However, late in his career, Batch had to file for bankruptcy. He did so in 2011, nearly losing his Super Bowl rings to pay off his debts.

Batch apparently owned 25 properties and made some bad real estate investments. When he filed for bankruptcy, Batch claimed that he was $8.3 million in debt. But while backup quarterbacks make a decent salary compared to the average person, his salary wasn’t enough to pay back his debts. While he’s not exactly living on Easy Street, Batch has gotten his act together, working as a broadcaster and doing work with the NFLPA.

Shawn Kemp

(Getty Images)

Kemp rose to fame In the early 1990s as a member of the SuperSonics. He and Gary Payton teamed up to lead the rise of basketball in Seattle. Kemp was an explosive and powerful big man who went to six straight All-Star Games during the peak of his career and nearly led the SuperSonics to the NBA title in 1996 before falling short against the Bulls. For his career, Kemp averaged 14.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game and was paid more than $91 million over 14 seasons.

Unfortunately, in 2022, it was reported that Kemp’s net worth was almost zero. After retiring, he had some legal issues that were accompanied by hefty legal bills. It was also reported that Kemp was making monthly child support payments to six different families. In 2020, Kemp’s name was attached to a cannabis dispensary in Seattle that he started to help him to start making money again. However, Kemp’s legal woes have continued, as have his financial hardships.

Antoine Walker

(Getty Images)

Over his entire NBA career, Walker’s earnings are north of $100 million. That’s the kind of money you get after 13 seasons in the league, especially as a three-time all-star. But even an estimated $108 million isn’t an infinite amount, especially when you refuse to wear the same suit twice and support 70 friends and family members at various times, both of which Walker did.

Walker first got himself into trouble by writing checks to casinos for over $1 million. That foolish decision was just a precursor to Walker filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2010, claiming he had over $12 million in debts and assets of a mere $4.3 million. His college teammate Nazr Mohammed had to chip in for half of his attorney’s fees during the bankruptcy proceedings. Walker was out of debt by 2013 but only after selling his NBA championship ring.

Lawrence Taylor

(Getty Images)

Part of Taylor’s problem is that elite defensive players during his era didn’t make the kind of money a player of his stature would today. But his other problem is that he liked to spend money on things that he didn’t actually need, especially drugs. Taylor had a drug problem, which is a good way to lose a lot of money quickly and put yourself into debt.

In fact, Taylor once admitted to spending $1,000 per day on a combination of drugs and escorts. There was also a series of bad investments and legal issues that drained his bank account. Taylor compounded the issue by giving the IRS a false tax return. By 1998, he had to file for bankruptcy while later getting charged with failure to pay child support and tax evasion.

Mookie Blaylock

(Getty Images)

Blaylock will long be remembered as one of the finest point guards in Hawks history, at least before Trae Young showed up in Atlanta. During his time in Atlanta, he led the league in steals in back-to-back seasons and holds the franchise record for most steals. Blaylock was one of the best defensive players of his era, averring 2.3 steals per game during his career. But he also knew how to put the ball in the basket, averaging 13.5 points and 6.7 assists per game during his career, helping to earn him over $31 million in salary.

Unfortunately, Blaylock battled alcoholism and substance abuse during the latter stages of his career and his life after retirement. Much of his money was either devoured by the condition he had or went toward trying to defend himself in court. In 2013, Blaylock was the driver in a fatal car accident that claimed a woman’s life and almost his own. After pleading guilty, Blaylock served three years followed by eight years of probation, losing most of his money in the process.

Terrell Owens

(Getty Images)

Between his salary and his endorsement deals, Owens made around $80 million during his time in the NFL. But it turns out Owens spent too much time coming up with elaborate touchdown celebrations, creating controversy, and doing sit-ups in his driveway to manage his finances properly. At one point, Owens had hit net worth down to roughly half a million dollars. He was paying about $45,000 per month in child support, which can make any fortune shrink in a hurry.

Owens actually lapsed on those payments for a while and nearly ended up going to jail because he either couldn’t or wouldn’t pay them. If you’re wondering why Owens spent time playing in the CFL and Fan Controlled Football, it’s more so because he needed the money rather than the love of the game.

Glen Rice

(Getty Images)

As a former top-five pick, Rice didn’t have the most memorable career, but he was an accomplished scorer and a three-time all-star. In six of his 15 seasons, Rice averaged over 20 points per game. He also contributed to the Lakers during their 2000 championship, starting almost every game of the season. His career ended with over $68 million worth of salary in his pocket and 18.3 points per game.

But a combination of poor business decisions and regular child support payments led to Rice’s post-basketball financial problems. Rice even asked a judge to reduce his monthly support payments so that he could live independently. To make ends meet, he started to rely on memorabilia sales, public appearances, and fees for signing autographs. But even that wasn’t enough to cover his expenses. In 2022, a judge finally agreed to reduce Rice’s monthly payments, which appears to have eased his financial trouble.

Latrell Sprewell

(Getty Images)

Sprewell is most infamous for his violent incident with coach P.J. Carleismo. That voided the contract he had with the Warriors, although Sprewell later sign a lucrative deal with the Knicks and make plenty of money. He also made some unusual comments in 2004 when he claimed that the three-year, $21 million contract the Timberwolves offered him wasn’t enough to feed his family, leading him to decline the offer.

In retrospect, perhaps Sprewell should have taken the $21 million and done his best to get by. A few years after his days in the NBA were over, he was sued by his former partner for $200 million, as she claimed that Sprewell promised to support her and their four kids. That lawsuit led to money problems that caused Sprewell to have his yacht and two homes foreclosed over the next couple of years. A few years after that, the state of Wisconsin claimed that Sprewell was $3.5 million behind in his taxes, putting him in even deeper financial turmoil.

Tiki Barber

(Getty Images)

On the field, Barber had a career that would make most running backs proud. He played all 10 of his seasons with the Giants, racking up over 10,000 rushing yards and going to the Pro Bowl three times. While outspoken at times, Barber appeared to be smart enough to avoid financial ruin during his retirement. In fact, he retired rather than sign a two-year, $50 million contract with the Giants, so he must have been in good shape financially.

Surprisingly, that didn’t turn out to be the case. Barber had issues with his personal life, as his 11-year marriage ended after he cheated on his wife with an NBC intern. That affair also cost him his job because he violated a “morality clause” in his NBC contract while working as a broadcaster. It turns out, Barber wasn’t that responsible off the field with money or his personal life. Fortunately, he’s found other broadcasting jobs and began hosting a daily radio show on WFAN in New York in 2022.

Eric Williams

(Getty Images)

Williams had a prosperous 12-year NBA career. Early in his career, he averaged 15 points per game over two seasons with the Celtics. After getting hurt during his third season in the league, Williams was never the same again. However, he was able to hang around the NBA for 12 seasons, making close to $40 million while averaging 8.6 points per game during those 12 seasons.

Unfortunately, about 10 years after his NBA career came to an end, Williams found himself without a home and seriously in debt. His situation worsened when he received a citation alleging that he was over $24,000 behind on child support payments. In recent years, Williams has managed to dig himself out of that financial hole, although he shouldn’t be particularly proud of blowing a nearly $40 million nest egg.

Deuce McCallister

(Getty Images)

As an NFL quarterback, McCallister banked around $70 million in salary. At one time, he was among the highest-paid running backs in the league. But within three years of retiring, virtually all of that money was gone. The biggest culprit was McCallister buying a Nissan dealership in Mississippi, which seemed like a good idea at the time.

However, McCallister was built to be a running back, not a businessman. Nissan ended up suing him for owing more than $6.6 million, plus interest, causing McCallister to file for bankruptcy on behalf of the dealership. Even after a settlement was ordered, McCallister failed to pay, forcing Nissan to sue him again. Along the way, McCallister saw his home auctioned off with his net worth down to about $50,000.

Allen Iverson

(Getty Images)

If you just looked at Iverson’s contracts, not to mention the expensive way he would dress, you’d probably think that he was just fine financially during his NBA career. Even for a big spender, it’d take a lot to lose all of his cash. Keep in mind that he made over $20 million in salary some years.

However, when his wife filed for divorce in 2008, there were reports that Iverson was in debt. He apparently spent freely, to the point that he reportedly bought new clothes everywhere he went rather than carry luggage (or hire someone to carry the luggage for him). When the divorce proceedings went to court, Iverson allegedly yelled at his former wife: “I don’t even have money for a cheeseburger!” However, publicly, he kept up the appearance that he had plenty of money, so perhaps the truth is somewhere in between.

Dan Marino

(Getty Images)

Fortunately, Marino is better known for being the best quarterback to never win a Super Bowl than he is for his financial errors. Ideally, he’d rather be remembered as a former NFL and a nine-time Pro Bowler, not to mention leading the NFL in completions six times, which remains a record the Hall of Famer who spent his entire career with the Dolphins owns.

In any event, Marino followed up a spectacular career with some financial missteps after he retired. He backed a company called Digital Domain Media Group that worked on Apollo 13 and Titanic. However, when that company went bankrupt, Marino’s 1.6 million shares became worthless and he lost a reported $14 million. Despite taking a heavy loss on that investment, Marino is still able to get by thanks to his broadcasting gig on CBS.

William Perry

(Getty Images)

It should sadden to hear all NFL fans, especially Chicago fans, that the great William Refrigerator Perry fell on hard times after he retired. He was such a legendary figure for the Bears, especially when they won Super Bowl XX and he scored a touchdown. He made millions during his career and also made plenty of celebrity appearances both before and after he retired.

Unfortunately, a series of health issues, including diabetes, alcoholism, and Guillain-Barré syndrome have had a negative impact on his life and his finances. Things got so bad that had to sell his Super Bowl ring for $20,000 at an auction. In 2016, Perry reportedly had to move into a retirement home and is living off disability payments from the NFL and social security to support himself, a sad ending for a larger-than-life figure.

Clifford Robinson

(Getty Images)

During his playing career, Robinson was affectionately known as Uncle Cliffy. He wasn’t a bonafide superstar, earning just one all-star selection. But he was the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year in 1993 and was one of the better defensive players of his era. But with tens of millions in the bank, Robinson filed for bankruptcy just two seasons after his retirement. According to the claim, he had assets worth $7.1 million but $12.4 worth of debt, putting him more than $5 million in the red.

To his credit, he ventured into the cannabis industry with a line of Uncle Cliffy products to help him get out of debt and get his finances back on track. Sadly, a stroke in 2017 left him partially paralyzed with Robinson passing away of lymphoma in 2020 at the age of 53.

Clinton Portis

(Getty Images)

Believe it or not, Portis was once the highest-paid running back in NFL history. It’s surprising because he only went to the Pro Bowl twice. While he was still early in his career, Portis signed an eight-year, $50.5 million contract that should have had him set for life. But after signing that contract, injuries got in the way of his career and poor financial decisions followed.

About five years after his last NFL game, Portis filed for bankruptcy. He claimed his financial advisors forced him to make bad investments and took more than $3 million out of his account. He later claimed that he didn’t fully understand what his advisors were telling him. A few years after filing for bankruptcy, he was one of a dozen former players accused of defrauding the NFL’s health program. Those players made a few million dollars worth of false claims with Portis eventually being sentenced to six months in jail.

Darius Miles

(Getty Images)

Miles was one of the more successful players to jump from high school to the pros, at least early in his career. He was one of the top rookies in the league during his first season and carved out a respectable career. Despite a knee injury ending his career prematurely, Miles played eight seasons in the NBA and made $62 million in addition to having a couple of movie roles.

But perhaps Miles skipped college entirely, he didn’t do a good job of managing his finances. He had an extravagant lifestyle and spent as if the money would never run out. But the money did run out, especially after several unsuccessful investments. About seven years after he retired, Miles was forced to declare bankruptcy.

Luther Elliss

(Getty Images)

Fans of the Lions will probably remember Ellis more than most NFL fans. He played 10 seasons in the NFL, mostly in Detroit. Elliss went to two Pro Bowls and made well over $10 million during his career, which means he should have been set for life. AT least that would have been the case if Elliss had been more responsible with his money.

It turns out Elliss spent too much money on cars and jewelry in addition to making some bad investments. Within five years of retiring, he was $1.6 million in debt on his mortgage and didn’t have enough to pay it off, forcing him into bankruptcy. Elliss reemerged in the football world as a college coach in 2017, ultimately joining the staff of his alma mater Utah in 2022.

Joe Smith

(Getty Images)

After being the first overall pick in the draft, Smith had something of a journeyman career, playing for 12 teams in 16 seasons. Despite failing to find a permanent home or ever being an all-star, Smith’s longevity helped him amass over $60 million in career earnings. When all was said and done, Smith averaged 10.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

Ironically, it was his constant movement between homes that ended up costing him. Smith claims that he purchased a brand-new home in each state where he competed, and by 2018, he was completely bankrupt. Perhaps he forgot that you’re supposed to sell homes when you move away. When Smith was in dire straights financially, it was Alex Rodriguez who saved him. A-Rod set up Smith with a financial counselor who assisted Smith in getting back on his feet and paying off his debts.

Bernie Kosar

(Getty Images)

There were high hopes for Kosar when the Browns drafted him out of Miami. That year, he signed a $6 million contract, and that was just at the start of a 12-year career. Kosar tried to focus on football while letting his father manage his money. But that turned out to be a bad decision.

Kosar’s father quickly spent the signing bonus he got from the Browns on cars and his mortgage. Between loans and general mismanagement, Kosar’s father ended helped to lose $15 million. Despite graduating from Miami’s business school and getting involved in some successful businesses, Kosar had to declare bankruptcy in 2009 when his business had just $9 million in assets and over $18 million in debt.

Christian Laettner

(Getty Images)

In addition to becoming the most despised player in college basketball history, Laettner had a successful NBA career that earned him more than $60 million. He played for six different teams over 13 seasons. While Laettner was only an all-star once, he played well enough in the pros to keep getting contracts, eventually averaging 12.8 points and 6.7 rebounds over his entire career.

After retiring, Laettner experienced financial hardship. He found himself on the verge of bankruptcy as a result of several poor business and real estate decisions. He not only owed $14 million to North Carolina creditors but he also conned one of his former teammates. Laettner partnered with Scottie Pippen in an effort to buy the Memphis Grizzlies. But the deal never came to fruition, and when Pippen didn’t get a return on his investment, he sued Laettner, his former Dream Team teammate, winning $2.5 million.

Larry Johnson

(Getty Images)

Johnson is one of the best power forwards in NBA history and a Hall of Famer. Even with chronic back problems slowing him down late in his career and forcing him into early retirement, Johnson put together an impressive career. He won Rookie of the Year honors after an incredible college career at UNLV and was an all-star in the NBA twice. Over his five years with the Hornets and five years with the Knicks, Grandmama averaged 16.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while collecting over $83 million, all by age 31.

Alas, Johnson’s early retirement was not exactly a blessing. His back problems necessitated costly medical procedures in order for him to function properly. Johnson filed for bankruptcy in 2015 when it was discovered he owed a colossal sum in child support. He owed one woman $890,000 in delinquent child support. Offering the woman his home in California was the only way he knew how to settle his obligation. The woman accepted the offer, which settled the matter, although it probably doesn’t leave Johnson with much money left to live too comfortably.

Dermontti Dawson

(Getty Images)

Few players are as revered by Steelers fans as Dawson. He spent his entire NFL career playing center for the Steelers, going to seven straight Pro Bowls and ultimately earning a place in the Hall of Fame. Naturally, he made a decent living, only to end up in financial turmoil, filing for bankruptcy a decade after his retirement.

After retiring, Dawson became a real estate developer. But he had a minority stake in a lot of ventures, so he didn’t have a lot of control over decisions being made. He ended up owning his partners close to $70 million while having just $1.4 million in assets. Dawson now makes a living as a sales rep but does still have part ownership in an independent baseball team.

Vin Baker

(Getty Images)

To date, Baker is one of the most popular players in Bucks’ history. He began his career in Milwaukee, where he made the all-star team in three straight seasons before becoming an all-star again after being traded to Seattle in 1997. Baker also played for the Celtics, Knicks, Rockets, and Clippers during his 13-year career. He eventually retired after making more than $97 million, averaging 15 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

Unfortunately, Baker’s financial difficulties after his playing days ended have been well-documented. He battled alcoholism and addiction during his career, and those issues continued after he retired, putting a strain on his finances in the process. But after promising to get clean, Baker was able to turn things around. For a while, he was managing a Starbucks while trying to get on the right path. In 2018, Baker returned to the Bucks as an assistant coach, relying on the franchise that drafted him to help him stay on the straight and narrow.

John Elway

(Getty Images)

While Elway went to Stanford and had a Hall of Fame career with the Broncos, winning two Super Bowls, he’s not always made the best decisions off the field. When he was running the front office for the Broncos, he failed on multiple occasions to draft a viable quarterback. In 2010, he was also the victim of a Ponzi scheme, which you wouldn’t think would happen to a Stanford graduate.

Elway reportedly lost $15 million when he and his business partner invested in a hedge fund that turned out to be not such a good idea. On the bright side, Elway made other investments that have gone better and prevented him from wasting his money. For instance, late in his career, he sold five auto dealerships with his name for $82.5 million. He also owns four Denver-area steakhouses called Elway’s, so he had some good investments and never needs to worry about where to go for a good meal.

O.J. Simpson

(Getty Images)

Simpson’s legal troubles are well-documented, and hiring several high-priced lawyers to help get him acquitted of double-murder charges didn’t exactly come cheap. On top of that, Simpson lost a civil suit two years later that ordered him to pay $33.5 million to the families of the victims in his double-murder case. Any money that Simpson made after losing his civil case the Goldman family did its best to collect.

Most people don’t know that a tax lien was filed against Simpson in 1999, and by 2007, the state of California claimed he owed the state $1.44 million in unpaid taxes. Simpson’s financial situation didn’t improve after he was convicted of armed robbery and served nine years in prison before being given parole in 2017. He died on April 11, 2024 in Las Vegas due to prostate cancer.

NFL legend Dan Marino has offered a key advice to Lamar Jackson, which could help him to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs and advance to the Super Bowl.
The Baltimore Ravens are one step away from playing the Super Bowl. Lamar Jackson could finally lift a Vince Lombardi trophy, and Dan Marino has shared a key advice that could help him defeat the Kansas City Chiefs.

In the 2024 NFL playoffs, the Ravens and the Chiefs are going to compete for the AFC Championship. Both teams are very solid, but it seems like Baltimore is the favorite to win and go to the Super Bowl.

This will be an undoubtedly exciting game, but not an easy one. Lamar Jackson will face one of the toughest quarterbacks in the league. However, he has received special advice from Dan Marino that could help him defeat his rival.

Dan Marino sends special message to Lamar Jackson

Lamar Jackson is on the verge of playing in his first Super Bowl. Nevertheless, he must first defeat the Chiefs to earn a trip to Las Vegas and compete for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The task won’t be easy at all for the Ravens. Even though the Chiefs had a rough regular season, they have been able to change things up in the playoffs, with a notable improvement of the team.

For this reason, Dan Marino, NFL legend, has sent Lamar Jackson a special message. The former quarterback of the Dolphins supports the Ravens, and wants them to win this year’s Super Bowl.

“My advice is to let if flow,” Marino told CBS Sports when asked about his advice for Jackson. “Enjoy yourself. He is an incredible athlete. He’s a great player. He’ll probably be MVP. Just let it go. Use your teammates, and understand that there’s an opportunity that you might not get again, and get there. Get to the Super Bowl. Do whatever it takes.

“He’s been very impressive this year,” Marino added. “They have a really good chance, a really good chance to win it all.” It is very clear that he’s a big fan of the 2019 MVP.

Tyreek Hill has achieved an incredible record that no Miami Dolphins player, not even a legend like Dan Marino, has ever accomplished.
Tyreek Hill is regarded as the best player the Miami Dolphins have in their roster. Now, the wide receiver has achieved an amazing record that not even Dan Marino, legendary quarterback of the team, could get.

Last year, the Dolphins decided to trade for one of the best receivers in the entire league. Miami agreed to terms with the Kansas City Chiefs to acquire Tyreek Hill, and the wideout has definitely lived up to the expectations so far.

Hill wants to become a true legend for the Dolphins, and he’s poised to help his team achieve success this same year.

Tyreek Hill breaks incredible record not even Dan Marino could achieve

A few days ago, Tyreek Hill talked about the ratings of Madden 24. The wide receiver said that he deserved to join the 99 overall club, and EA Sports pleased him today.

The video game company announced that Tyreek Hill will have a 99 rating in Madden 24. The wide receiver listed him with a 98 overall, but EA Sports decided to upgrade him in-game and boost his stats.

With this move, Hill becomes the first Dolphins player to ever be in the 99 overall club. Surprisingly, Dan Marino, legendary quarterback of the team, never had that rating when he played.

Quarterbacks have always been a critical part of the NFL no matter the era they played in considering their immense importance to their respective teams. Over the years, rule changes have been implemented to protect these valuable players from potential injuries.

This is why comparing quarterbacks from different eras solely based on statistics isn’t fair with past players. However, there is one quarterback who stood out with remarkable numbers that transcended his time.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/nfl-makes-final-disciplinary-decision-regarding-dolphins-wr-tyreek-hill-20230901-BUS-55350.html" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20230901_BUS_55350_Tyreek-Hill-Miami-Dolphins-NFL-2023.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="A few months ago, Tyreek Hill was involved in an altercation in Florida.
Despite the more physically demanding nature of football during his era, Dan Marino established himself as one of the all-time greatest quarterbacks while playing for the Miami Dolphins, even though he was unable to secure a championship.

Dan Marino Thinks He May Throw for 6,000 Yards

Marino expressed his belief that quarterbacks from his era could exceed 6,000 passing yards in today’s NFL. During an interview with Kevin Clark of ESPN, he stated “The best part about this is I’m retired and I don’t have to prove it. Yes, we’d throw for 6,000 yards.”

“It would be a lot of fun. I wish I could. You can’t hit the quarterback the way you used to. You can’t get a shot in the head, they can’t go to your knees. And I think that’s a good thing because when I played you were allowed to do that. Players could take shots at you,” Marino commented.

Marino made history as the first player ever to pass for over 5,000 yards in a single season when he achieved 5,084 yards in 1984. The NFL’s single-season passing yardage record currently stands at 5,477 yards, a feat accomplished by Peyton Manning in 2013 while playing for the Denver Broncos.

When Did Dan Marino Retire?

Dan Marino retired in 1999 after playing 17 seasons for the Miami Dolphins.

Dan Marino is widely regarded the best quarterback in NFL history who never won a Super Bowl ring. Marino spent his entire career in Miami, though he admitted thinking about leaving the Dolphins at some point.
Success is not always the only way to stand out. One of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, Dan Marino is one of the few NFL legends who have cemented a legacy without winning a Super Bowl ring.

Marino had an impressive 147-93 record as starter, spending all of his 17 seasons in the National Football League in the same city: Miami. He was able to lead his team to the playoffs, but the Vince Lombarditrophy has always been elusive.

The closest he got to the promised land was in 1985, losing to the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XIX. Many wondered whether his loyalty to the Dolphins cost him the chance of winning a ring, and even Marino admitted he thought about going after that feat elsewhere.

Dan Marino admits thinking about leaving Miami to chase Super Bowl ring

“Yes, I definitely thought about it to be honest with you,” Marino told Mackenzie Salmon of USA Today’s Sports Seriously. “I played 17 years for the Dolphins and they were kind of going in a new direction with a new coach, and I had offers to go play other places and really thought about it, and maybe had a chance to win a championship like Matthew [Stafford] has done.

“I thought about it for a long time; it just didn’t feel right. I just decided I’ll just be a Dolphin for life and it’s worked out great. But I did, I will tell you that. I did think about that.”

The Vikings and Steelers have approached Marino, but he preferred not to break his commitment with the Dolphins. It may be a shame that a player of his caliber didn’t get to taste the ultimate glory, but the fact that he stayed loyal to one team speaks volumes about his greatness.
