Considering his stats and his career, you’d think that Yankees manager Aaron Boone should and would easily lean towards adding Domingo German to the team’s roster. Then again, the manager is still undecided about that final roster spot.

Boone has repeatedly stated that he sees both German and standout prospect Deivi Garcia as starting pitchers. That’s why, come April 1 and Opening Day, he’s going to have to choose between one or the other.

Aaron Boone Sees Both Deivi Garcia And Domingo German As Starters, Is Still Undecided On Opening Day Roster

“Aaron Boone says that he sees both Dominican pitchers – Deivi Garcia and Domingo German – as starters, which probably means that just one of them will be on the roster come Opening Day #Yankees,” ESPN’s Marly Rivera reported.

Thus far, Garcia’s numbers during Spring Training have been pretty decent. He’s logged a 3.86 ERA over five starts and 14.0 IP while striking out 14 hitters, and there’s clearly a lot of upside with him.

German, on the other hand, continues to be flawless since serving his year-long suspension for domestic violence. He’s tossed 9 scoreless innings over three starts, striking out 13 out of the 31 hitters he’s faced.

Gerrit Cole, Corey Kluber, Jameson Taillon, and Jordan Montgomery have already locked their spot in the team’s rotation thus far and right now, it seems like Boone couldn’t go wrong with either German or Garcia for that fifth and last spot. For the first time in years, the Yankees seem to have a somewhat solid rotation, which has been their Achilles heel in their pursuit of another World Series.

The Yankees have a lot of hope on García’s arm. Some people claim he’s poised to be as good, if not better than his compatriot and fellow Pinstriper Luis Severino, who’s struggled with injuries over the past couple of seasons.

García has dominated at every level and even though he looked a bit shaky in the preseason, it seems like Aaron Boone and the Yankees’ organization fully trust his ability to make an impact for the second half of the season.

Why Is Deivi García So Promising?

Even though what took him to the Yankees was his fastball, Deivi García has recently made a name for himself for his beautiful slider. He’s often in control and batters tend to struggle with high spin and breaking balls.

His fastball was clocked at 97 mph last year and his mean curve has been turning heads since he was a teenager. Moreover, his strikeout-to-walk ratio continues to improve on a yearly basis.

García’s prominent size (5-foot-9, 163 lbs.) and combination of skill and command make him an intimidating figure in the mound, even at the ripe age of 20 years old. He’s got an MLB-ready body and can endure the burden of a full season. He struck out 165 and gave up just 54 walks in the Minors in 2019.

The Yankees Could Really Use Another Arm

The New York Yankees recently got out of the slump by beating the New York Mets on a wild pitch. They had dropped 7 straight games prior to that triumph, most of them because of their sluggish bullpen.

Deivi García could make an immediate impact on Aaron Boone’s team. Even if he doesn’t crack the rotation or if the Yankees trade for a starting pitcher, he’s got the potential and is ready to come out of the bullpen right away.

The Yankees entered the season as one of the strongest contenders to make the World Series but have struggled mightily with injuries again. Who knows? perhaps the Bonao native is just the answer to their prayers.

“They’ll be guys that we’re definitely starting to have conversations that potentially could come into play in some way, shape, or form this weekend,” the manager said before their game vs. the Atlanta Braves.

Deivi García And Clarke Schmidt Are Ready To Debut With The Yankees

Aaron Boone went on to add that even though they’ve only played in simulation games, both pitchers look ready to make an impact right away. In fact, they could tag-team next Sunday, as Jordan Montgomery and JA Happ are expected to start the first two games of the series:

“Both guys, not just from our standpoint in looking at them and obviously impacting our club, but their development. This is what it is this year. So the work they’re doing down there has been good. The reports we’re getting have been very good. But these are important days for them to continue to refine their craft as young players that have bright futures. We’re getting all those reports. We’re able to see whatever video we need to see of their outings. They’re not in a minor-league season but in simulated game-type situations and they’re important,” Boone added.

Expectations are pretty high for García and Schmidt around the Yankees’ organization right now. The team believes they could even come off the bullpen in the postseason, so it only makes sense to call them up for the second half of the season.
