Across 9 seasons with the Raiders, Carr registered 35,222 passing yards, 217 passing touchdowns, and 99 interceptions while having a completion percentage of 64.6%. Though he never won a postseason game and finished 0-1 in the NFL Playoffs, Carr’s time with the Raiders won’t ever be forgotten.

Now, the retired quarterback may have a grade-A opportunity to bolster his legacy in Las Vegas. If he can stand behind Mendoza and help the product of Indiana University blossom into an elite NFL quarterback, then his image will only grow in Sin City. Carr never got to experience postseason success in Oakland/Las Vegas, but he may get a chance at redemption by mentoring Mendoza.

As things stand, Carr seems to have three options: remain retired, join a Super Bowl contender as a backup, or sign with a team that has potential and attempt to turn it into a contender with his arrival.

Following news of his possible return, rumors linked him to multiple teams. Some reports even suggested he could have competed with Aaron Rodgers for a spot with the Minnesota Vikings. However, it now appears that teams are either not interested or unwilling to offer him the role he expects.

Derek Carr needs the Saints’ help

When Carr informed the Saints of his retirement decision, the NFC South franchise placed him on the reserve/retired list. That designation means New Orleans still holds his rights, and any interested team must negotiate with the Saints to acquire him.

He spent his 11-year career with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints, where he retired in May. At the time, he opted against a $30 million guaranteed salary with the Saints, as he decided to retire instead of undergoing shoulder injury.

Carr is focused on healing his shoulder at the moment, but he’s not thinking of a potential return to the field right now. However, he admits that could change eventually.

Derek Carr doesn’t rule out NFL return

Talking on “The Dan Patrick Show,” Carr explained why he is still training despite announcing his retirement earlier his year.

“I wouldn’t say never because I’ve learned that when I say never, it usually happens,” Carr said. “I think we’ve all probably learned that. So, for me right now, I’m training because I love to train. That’s gonna be the rest of my life. I love to train. I throw a football every now and then out in the front with my kids and with my buddy for fun, because it’s part of my rehab still for my shoulder. I’m still just trying to get that back right from getting the shot and doing the rehab and all that. So I’m still doing those things. And so I always felt like, even though I’m done, if God wanted me to do it, I’ve got to be ready. I don’t want to go out there and not be ready, you know. So I’ll be ready, but I’m not coming back. Like, right now, today, I’m not coming back.”

In 169 games, Carr completed 3,765 passes on 5,785 attempts and racked up 41,245 yards and 257 touchdowns. The Saints named Spencer Rattler the starting quarterback while Tyler Shough develops his game, but time will tell if their plans don’t change soon.

Patrick Mahomes has had many rivals during his career. One of them called it quits last offseason, by retiring from the NFL. However, recent interviews have made it clear that, if the right situation or opportunity presents, the former four-time Pro Bowler could contemplate returning to the gridiron.

Derek Carr battled against Mahomes and the Chiefs for years in the AFC West as the Raiders’ quarterback. He then spent a couple of seasons in New Orleans, but injuries didn’t cut him slack, which prompted him to retire after 11 years in the NFL.

Recently, Carr appeared on the Dan Patrick Show. When asked if there is temptation to go back to the NFL, Carr said, “I always felt like, even though I’m done, if God wanted me to do it, I’ve got to be ready. I don’t want to go out there and not be ready, you know. So I’ll be ready, but I’m not coming back. Like, right now, today, I’m not coming back.” He is leaving the door half open, if the right opportunity presents, then he’d contemplate the idea.

Carr was an above average quarterback

In a league where quarterbacks are constantly evolving, rising or falling, Carr was the epitome of consistency. He was never regarded as a top 5 signal-caller, but was also respected and, if not given serious care, he would burn secondaries to the ground.

Carr ended his career with a 65% completion percentage, 41,245 yards, 257 touchdowns to 112 interceptions. He was third in the MVP voting in 2016 and had four Pro Bowl selections. He also had some memorable shootouts against Mahomes and the Chiefs.

Would Carr be a good option for a team?

If a team reaches Carr, it’s likely a team who suffered a season-ending injury to its starting quarterback. However, while a healthy Carr should give you a reasonably high floor, he is still rehabbing from a shoulder injury that literally limited his throwing ability.

Hence, the reasonably thing to assume is no calls would come in Carr’s direction. However, due to his words we can suppose he will try to stay in football shape just in case.

“That part was tough because I didn’t want to have surgery and just sit there and, it sounds crazy but, just take the Saints’ money. I wouldn’t have been able to play if I had the surgery and then, if I tried to play with it, I wasn’t near 100%. So, that doesn’t help them either. I just felt like it was the right thing to do for myself and for the team.”

Carr had to choose retirement due to a shoulder injury that prevents him from continuing his professional career. Now, the Saints are in a real predicament as they try to find their quarterback of the future.

Who will be the next Saints’ starting quarterback?

Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Hunter Dekkers will compete for the starting quarterback job with the New Orleans Saints. Jake Haener was also in the mix, but at the moment, he’s battling an injury (oblique strain).

Why did Derek Carr retire?

“I never played just for the money. I had a whole bunch of people tell me how crazy I was, and ‘Man, I would never have done that.’ That’s all cool, but I’ve gained all these things that the world has to offer, and it doesn’t really do anything for your heart. I knew my heart was at peace, and that’s really all that mattered.”

Is Derek Carr staying with Saints?

No. Derek Carr confirmed that he will not stay with the New Orleans Saints. Additionally, the player was clear and stated that, for now, he doesn’t foresee a possible comeback after recovering from the injury.

“My agent literally texted me a few days ago and he said, ‘Hey, just checking it in. How’s everything? You still feel comfortable with the decision?’ And I sent him a picture of me on the beach with my two kids playing. And I said, ‘This beats an OTA any day.’ And he said, ‘Yeah, I thought so.’ So, I’m doing great and have thoroughly enjoyed being home.”

The New Orleans Saints are in a unique situation when it comes to their QB1. Derek Carr was clearly the choice until he decided to retire from the NFL this offseason. This left a team with little to no cap space in a dire situation. Now, they have three young, unproven QBs fighting for the starting spot.

One of them, Jake Haener, stirred the pot when speaking to Saints’ reporter Matthew Paras about the Saints needing a veteran QB. “I mean, what are you going to get from that?” Haener stated. He alluded that the team’s staff is full of former QBs and that’s enough for the young guys to learn.

“Those guys [on staff] are veterans, man. They’ve done it. They’ve been through it“. Haener also added that the QB room has “everything you need in terms of what to look for, what to ask, what to see. They’ve seen it all.“

Haener is competing with second-year QB Spencer Rattler and rookie Tyler Shough. According to the interview, he said that having former QBs like Kellen Moore (now the Saints’ HC), Doug Nussmeier, Scott Tolzien, and Scott Linehan is great. It allows the young QBs to have different perspectives and bring new ways to evolve.

A not-so fierce competition to be the Saints’ starting QB

It’s not an understatement to say that the Saints might have the worst QB room in the entire NFL right now. After all, they mismanaged their cap space in recent years and suffered big retirements. First, future Hall-of-Famer Drew Brees retired in 2020 after more than 15 years of service.

Then, they tried an awful mix of Jameis Winston, Trevor Siemian and Taysom Hill in 2021. Somehow, Sean Payton managed to coach the team into a 9-8 record. But then Payton also retired (for a year). In 2022, it was the ‘Red Rifle’ Andy Dalton who emerged as the signal-caller. A year later, the Saints signed Derek Carr, an established veteran QB to take the mantle. Injuries didn’t respect him, hence his early retirement.

So now that leaves the Saints with Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough. Between Rattler and Haener, they have a combined record of 0-7 in the NFL. None of them boast a decent completion percentage, as Rattler’s is 57% and Haener’s is an abysmal 46.2%. The two of them combined for 5 TDs and 6 INTs. And as for Shough, well, he was taken in the second round of this year’s draft, but wasn’t a top prospect at all.

Saints reporter Luke Johnson stated that Shough “can absolutely spin it“. It’s been reported that Shough has impressed more than his colleagues. The doubt is whether his offseason impressions can translate to full-gear competition.

After Carr‘s surprising retirement, the Saints find themselves at a crossroads at the quarterback position. Rookie Tyler Shough, selected with the 40th pick in the second round, appears as a strong option to take the spot. However, the franchise continues to explore other alternatives.

Spencer Rattler, selected in the fifth round of the 2024 Draft, has had limited opportunities in his first year. With a season of experience, he will look to compete for the starting position, making him one of the most viable options to throw passes to a key weapon like Kamara.

The new Saints player who could replace Carr

The newest addition to Kamara’s Saints is none other than Hunter Dekkers, the undrafted quarterback who joined the team after a tryout at rookie minicamp. After spending a season at Iowa Western Community College, he’s now looking for an opportunity in the NFL.

His addition joins an open competition for the starting job, which includes rookie Shough, Rattler, and Jake Haener, a fourth-round pick in the 2023 Draft.
