Derek Carr trusts in what Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson can bring to the Cleveland Browns for the 2026 NFL season.
Looking ahead, the Cleveland Browns have names like Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and Dillon Gabriel on their depth chart. According to Derek Carr, these players are enough to avoid drafting another quarterback in the upcoming Draft.

“If we leave this first round…yeah, with If I were to tell you, ‘Hey, Dave, Yeah. You’re the Cleveland Browns. You’re going to leave with Carnell Tate and Kadyn Proctor,’” Carr said on his podcast, Home Grown with David & Derek Carr.

“Would you not sign up for that if you’re a Cleveland Browns fan? Shedeur is excited. Especially. Let’s not forget about Deshaun. Yeah. We got Deshaun’s there, too. Lot of quarterbacks, so we’re good. We got we got enough talent in that room to win football. But I guess what? If we aren’t upright, it don’t matter.”

Protect the quarterback

Securing the No. 6 overall pick provides a prime opportunity to bolster the offensive line and ensure better protection for the quarterback, especially after a season plagued by sacks and pressure. By selecting an elite tackle, the front office can solidify the pocket and provide the necessary security for whoever is under center to operate efficiently.

Shedeur Sanders #12 of the Cleveland Browns

Two standout collegiate prospects who could be available at that spot are Francis Mauigoa from Miami and Georgia’s Monroe Freeling.

Plenty for Shedeur to improve

Shedeur Sanders had a rollercoaster rookie season with the Cleveland Browns after being selected in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. In 8 games (7 starts), he threw for 1,400 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions with a 56.6% completion rate, adding one rushing score and 169 yards on the ground.

While he flashed potential—highlighted by a 364-yard game against the Titans and a surprising Pro Bowl nod—his development moving forward will depend on improving his decision-making under pressure and reducing his league-high average time-to-throw.

To take the next step in 2026, Shedeur must focus on quicker processing and avoiding unnecessary sacks to become a more consistent and efficient starter in the NFL.

Will Deshaun Watson play in 2026?

Deshaun Watson is expected to play in 2026 as he enters the final year of his guaranteed $230 million contract with the Browns. After missing the entire 2025 season due to a re-ruptured Achilles, Watson is reportedly back in “great shape” and will participate in the team’s offseason program.

Quarterback Deshaun Watson #4 of the Cleveland Browns

Major decisions for the Browns

With Todd Monken at the helm, fans in the Browns’ Dawg Pound are eagerly awaiting the upcoming NFL Draft. Will they follow Derek Carr’s request to avoid selecting a quarterback, or will they instead look to strengthen that position on the roster? Here are the picks they will have at their disposal:

Round 1 – Pick 6

Round 1 – Pick 24 (via Jaguars)

Round 2 – Pick 39

Round 3 – Pick 70

Round 4 – Pick 107

Round 5 – Pick 146

Round 5 – Pick 149 (via Bengals)

Round 6 – Pick 206 (via Bears)

Round 7 – Pick 248 (via Seahawks)

With rumors growing loud around Derek Carr's potential return from retirement, the quarterback opened the door on a potential reunion with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Derek Carr may be second-guessing his decision to retire from the NFL. As the veteran quarterback makes up his mind, his latest comment showed a willingness to lend a helping hand to the Las Vegas Raiders in 2026. However, he might serve the Raiders in more of a mentoring role rather than as a starting franchise quarterback.

“If that’s something that [the Raiders] would like, if it brings [Fernando Mendoza] value, I would absolutely help him in any way. I know that building, our fanbase, and what it means to be a Raider,” Carr admitted, via @SleeperNFL on X, about mentoring Fernando Mendoza, who is projected to be the first overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Selected with a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Carr spent 9 seasons with the Raiders. He was around when the organization was moved out of Oakland and sent to Nevada. Reports suggest Carr’s return rumors haven’t drawn much interest from franchises.

However, his mentoring and knowledge could indeed be highly valued. For Las Vegas, having Carr help Mendoza take his first steps in the league might as well be the perfect scenario to develop who is called to be the franchise savior in Sin City.

Derek Carr could return to the NFL

Carr’s stats with Raiders

Across 9 seasons with the Raiders, Carr registered 35,222 passing yards, 217 passing touchdowns, and 99 interceptions while having a completion percentage of 64.6%. Though he never won a postseason game and finished 0-1 in the NFL Playoffs, Carr’s time with the Raiders won’t ever be forgotten.

Now, the retired quarterback may have a grade-A opportunity to bolster his legacy in Las Vegas. If he can stand behind Mendoza and help the product of Indiana University blossom into an elite NFL quarterback, then his image will only grow in Sin City. Carr never got to experience postseason success in Oakland/Las Vegas, but he may get a chance at redemption by mentoring Mendoza.

Derek Carr wants to continue his career and join a Super Bowl contender, but the New Orleans Saints still control his future — and the latest update may not be encouraging for the veteran quarterback.
Recently, Derek Carr revealed his desire to return to the NFL — but only to join a Super Bowl contender. The New Orleans Saints still hold his rights, and the franchise has delivered some tough news regarding his potential comeback.

Prior to the 2025 NFL season, Carr informed the Saints that he would retire from football. A few months later, the veteran quarterback appears eager to return, but only if a legitimate Super Bowl contender shows interest.

However, there is bad news for the signal-caller. According to Mike Florio of NBC, not only have the Saints not received an offer from a contender, they have not received any offer at all to acquire Carr’s rights.

Derek Carr may have to lower his standards

During this offseason, Carr has repeatedly stated that he wants another chance to win a Super Bowl. However, that opportunity may not come as a starting quarterback, as he likely hopes.

At the moment, true Super Bowl contenders do not have pressing needs at quarterback — which is part of the reason they are contenders. On top of that, Carr has not played in over a year, and his last season was far from his best.

As things stand, Carr seems to have three options: remain retired, join a Super Bowl contender as a backup, or sign with a team that has potential and attempt to turn it into a contender with his arrival.

Following news of his possible return, rumors linked him to multiple teams. Some reports even suggested he could have competed with Aaron Rodgers for a spot with the Minnesota Vikings. However, it now appears that teams are either not interested or unwilling to offer him the role he expects.

Derek Carr needs the Saints’ help

When Carr informed the Saints of his retirement decision, the NFC South franchise placed him on the reserve/retired list. That designation means New Orleans still holds his rights, and any interested team must negotiate with the Saints to acquire him.

One possible reason no team has inquired about Carr is the potential cost. Franchises may be unwilling to surrender a draft pick or player in exchange for a quarterback coming out of retirement.

For that reason, Carr may need to approach the Saints’ front office to explore the possibility of a release, which would clear a simpler path for him to sign with any team willing to take a chance on his comeback.

Derek Carr has finally publicly announced whether he is ready to return to the NFL. His decision could impact several teams that are searching for a reliable quarterback.
Derek Carr has confirmed that he is ready to return to the NFL. The quarterback said on his podcast that he wants to come out of retirement, but only if the right opportunity presents itself. The goal is very clear: to compete for a Super Bowl.

“Would I do it? Yes. Would I do it for anybody? Absolutely not. I told you two things. I have to be healthy and I would want a chance to win a Super Bowl. Obviously, that’s a tough thing to find. That’s hard to do. That’s not easy.”

Carr’s message has sparked many rumors about which teams could be an option in 2026. The player even admitted that he has already turned down offers. “I had to say no a couple times so far.” The veteran announced his retirement in 2025 due to a right shoulder injury.

Will Derek Carr come out of retirement?

Derek Carr officially announced that he is ready to come out of retirement as long as certain conditions are met. At the moment, several teams have significant uncertainty at the quarterback position. The Minnesota Vikings, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, or Indianapolis Colts are places where he could compete to be QB1.

What will be Derek Carr’s next team?

At the moment, it is unknown which will be Derek Carr’s next team, and it’s not even certain that he will play again. The reality is that, when analyzing the NFL landscape, the true Super Bowl contenders do not appear to have viable openings at the quarterback position. An intriguing spot could be the Pittsburgh Steelers if Aaron Rodgers does not return.

In recent days, reports have linked the Minnesota Vikings to Aaron Rodgers, but his potential move to Minneapolis could be complicated by a veteran quarterback who is now eyeing an NFL return in 2026.
The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly in the market for a veteran quarterback to compete with J.J. McCarthy ahead of the 2026 NFL season. While Aaron Rodgers has been frequently linked to the NFC North franchise, the potential return of another experienced signal-caller could complicate those plans.

Throughout the 2026 offseason, rumors have suggested that Minnesota is considering pursuing Rodgers as a short-term QB1, allowing McCarthy to develop behind him. However, a different veteran quarterback may soon enter the picture and emerge as a legitimate alternative for the Vikings.

Derek Carr retired prior to the 2025 NFL season, but the former Raiders and Saints quarterback has not ruled out an NFL return in 2026 if the right situation presents itself.

Derek Carr retired in 2025

Derek Carr eyes NFL return in 2026: Which teams could be interested?

Earlier during the 2025 season, Carr publicly stated that he would be open to returning to the league. He revealed that the shoulder injury that led to his retirement has fully healed and that he feels physically ready to play again.

On Sunday, Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero, and Mike Garafolo reported that Carr’s comeback could come sooner than many expected. According to their report, the veteran quarterback is targeting a return for the 2026 season, and several teams have already inquired about the possibility of signing him.

Interest in Carr isn’t new. During the 2025 season, the Cincinnati Bengals reportedly reached out to gauge his availability after Joe Burrow suffered a turf toe injury. Now, heading into 2026, multiple teams—including the Vikings—are believed to be searching for an experienced quarterback, either to provide competition or to step in as a potential QB1.

If Carr decides to unretire, interested teams would need to negotiate with the New Orleans Saints, who still hold his rights. While New Orleans appears committed to Tyler Shough, acquiring assets in return for Carr could help the Saints continue rebuilding their roster rather than losing the veteran for nothing.

Are the Vikings a real landing spot for Derek Carr?

As previously noted, Minnesota is actively exploring veteran quarterback options for 2026. Although the organization remains confident in J.J. McCarthy’s long-term potential, his recurring injury issues have pushed the Vikings to consider a reliable contingency plan.

If Minnesota is unable to land Aaron Rodgers, Derek Carr could become a realistic option. The veteran quarterback is reportedly interested in joining a team with a competitive roster, and despite ongoing concerns along the offensive line, the opportunity to throw to Justin Jefferson, T.J. Hockenson, and Jordan Addison would make the Vikings an appealing destination.

A quarterback’s arm can redefine a season in college football. Some years are remembered not for trophies, but for aerial assaults that bent defenses and filled stat sheets, turning Saturdays into weekly showcases of precision and nerve.

Across different eras, a select group of NCAAF quarterbacks pushed passing yardage to historic limits. Their seasons unfolded as long campaigns of risk and rhythm, where playbooks expanded and records quietly began to crack.

These record-breaking performances reflected changing offenses, evolving rules and moments when talent, timing and opportunity aligned—leaving numbers that still frame how greatness at the position is measured.

Bailey Zappe | YDS: 5,967 – Season: 2021

Bailey Zappe (Source: Michael Reaves/Getty Images)

Bailey Zappe’s 2021 campaign at Western Kentucky was a statistical spectacle. In an offense that barely blinked at the line of scrimmage, he threw for a staggering 5,967 yards, eclipsing a record that had stood since 2003 and setting a new benchmark for single-season passing production in FBS history.

His year wasn’t just about volume — precise timing with receivers and consistent rhythm under pressure helped him redefine what a dynamic collegiate aerial attack could look like. His performance culminated in a memorable Boca Raton Bowl, where he cemented both yardage and touchdown records before departing college football lore.

B.J. Symons | YDS: 5,833 – Season: 2003

B.J. Symons (Source: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

Long before Zappe’s name adorned the record book, B. J. Symons carried Texas Tech’s Air Raid offense to historic heights. In 2003, he harnessed an aggressive passing philosophy to throw for 5,833 yards, breaking the NCAA single-season yardage record and standing atop the leaderboard for nearly two decades.

His senior season became a defining chapter of early 2000s college football, showcasing how systematic vertical passing could rip through defenses and leave an enduring imprint on offensive strategy.

Graham Harrell | YDS: 5,705 – Season: 2007

Graham Harrell (Source: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

In the heart of Texas Tech’s explosive Air Raid era, Graham Harrell delivered one of the most prolific seasons of his career in 2007. With 5,705 yards through the air, Harrell blended accuracy and unrelenting tempo, threading passes into windows defenders rarely covered.

His campaign didn’t just pile up numbers — it embodied the offensive identity of a team that embraced passing as both art and science, forcing opponents to play catch-up while he orchestrated drive after drive with a cool, calculating approach.

Joe Burrow | YDS: 5,671 – Season: 2019

Joe Burrow (Source: Mike Zarrilli/Getty Images)

Joe Burrow’s 2019 season at LSU stands as one of college football’s great individual offensives. Throwing for 5,671 yards, he paced an LSU juggernaut that married big-play capability with strategic execution, dominating SEC defenses week after week.

What elevated his numbers beyond mere stat lines was the context: this was a Heisman Trophy-winning performance that powered an undefeated run to a national championship. His poise and instinctive command drove LSU’s aerial assault in a way that reshaped expectations for elite quarterback play.

Case Keenum | YDS: 5,671 – Season: 2009

Case Keenum (Source: Thomas B. Shea/Getty Images)

Case Keenum’s 2009 season at Houston was a masterclass in consistency and resilience. Matching Joe Burrow’s yardage figure with 5,671 passing yards, he showcased an ability to sustain pace and precision across a long season, threading balls into tight coverage and leading his offense with a rare blend of calm and fire.

His performance didn’t just reflect personal excellence — it exemplified how a quarterback can galvanize an attack around him, turning yardage totals into a narrative of sustained excellence throughout the campaign.

Case Keenum | YDS: 5,631 – Season: 2011

Case Keenum (Source: Bob Levey/Getty Images)

By 2011, Case Keenum had already carved his name deep into Houston’s record books, and his senior campaign became another defining chapter. Throwing for 5,631 yards, he led a dizzying aerial attack that kept defenses on their heels all season.

His mastery extended beyond volume — his command of Houston’s offense produced efficiency and consistency, propelling the Cougars to one of their strongest seasons in program history.

His year featured multiple games with massive yardage totals, as he continued to build on a career that would make him the NCAA’s all-time passing leader by the season’s end.

Anthony Gordon | YDS: 5,579 – Season: 2019

Anthony Gordon (Source: Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

In the Pac-12 frenzy of 2019, Washington State’s Anthony Gordon emerged as one of college football’s purest passers. Operating under Mike Leach’s pass-first system, he consistently delivered big plays and sustained drives, finishing the year with 5,579 yards through the air.

His rhythm from snap to release made Wazzu one of the most unpredictable offenses in the nation, with him routinely threading balls into tight windows downfield. That season stands as one of the most prolific aerial campaigns in school history and emblematic of Leach’s offensive philosophy.

Colt Brennan | YDS: 5,549 – Season: 2006

Colt Brennan (Source: Marco Garcia/Getty Images)

Colt Brennan’s 2006 season at Hawaii was the centerpiece of one of the most entertaining offenses in college football. With a quick, decisive throwing motion and receivers running sharp, aggressive routes, he amassed 5,549 passing yards, becoming a household name in the WAC and beyond.

That year was defined by rapid scoring, high tempo, and a willingness to take shots deep downfield, making Hawaii’s aerial assault must-see TV. His chemistry with his playmakers and uncanny ball placement fueled a campaign that still resonates with fans of high-octane offense.

Ty Detmer | YDS: 5,188 – Season: 1990

Ty Detmer (Source: Heisman)

Long before the modern spread systems, Ty Detmer’s 1990 season at BYU showcased old-school precision and savvy. His 5,188-yard performance — the first time a quarterback passed 5,000 yards in a season — rewrote expectations for what a college passer could accomplish, blending timing, anticipation, and sheer production.

His leadership and efficiency also earned him the Heisman Trophy that year, as he feasted on defenses with a mix of rhythm and imagination. His season remains a touchstone for the evolution of passing excellence in the game.

David Klingler | YDS: 5,140 – Season: 1990

David Klingler (Source: Houston Cougars)

David Klingler was an early progenitor of the high-yardage era, and his 1990 output at Houston spoke to his prowess and a burgeoning pass-heavy offense. Throwing for 5,140 yards, his season was marked by jaw-dropping box scores that hinted at the big-play potential lurking in every snap.

With quick reads and a rocket arm, he carved up secondaries with frequency, helping usher in an era of prolific collegiate passing. His numbers that year stood among the best in the land and helped set the stage for future record-chasing seasons.

Graham Harrell | YDS: 5,111 – Season: 2008

Graham Harrell (Source: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

After a staggering 2007 campaign, Graham Harrell returned to Texas Tech in 2008 with expectations just as lofty. Even as defenses keyed in on him, he still threw for 5,111 yards, anchoring another relentless aerial assault out of Lubbock.

His precision and high-tempo rhythm kept opposing secondaries scrambling, and he finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting — one of the highest placings in school history. That season cemented Harrell’s reputation not just as a volume passer, but as a cerebral leader of one of college football’s most prolific offenses.

Derek Carr | YDS: 5,088 – Season: 2013

Derek Carr (Source: Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

In 2013, Fresno State’s Derek Carr turned his senior year into one of the most efficient passing showcases in the Mountain West. He racked up 5,088 yards while pacing an offense that seemed to hit another gear every week, leading the nation in total offense and throwing 50 touchdowns along the way.

His cadence and command elevated the Bulldogs to an 11–2 finish, marking one of the most decorated single seasons in school history and earning him national recognition as both a top passer and a scholar-athlete.

Paul Smith | YDS: 5,065 – Season: 2007

Paul Smith (Source: Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images)

Paul Smith’s 2007 season at Tulsa stands out as a defining moment for a program that thrived on creativity and aerial ingenuity. The Golden Hurricane signal-caller finished the year with 5,065 passing yards, threading the needle with accuracy and pace that stressed defenses across multiple conferences.

His connection with Tulsa’s receiving corps fueled a campaign full of big plays and sustained drives, helping the team compete at a high level and setting a school mark that remains part of Tulsa lore.

Brandon Doughty | YDS: 5,055 – Season: 2015

Brandon Doughty (Source: Joe Robbins/Getty Images)

Brandon Doughty’s 2015 season for Western Kentucky was a masterclass in consistency and clutch execution. Through a blend of veteran poise and pinpoint accuracy, he finished with 5,055 passing yards, building on a legacy of production that made him one of the most reliable quarterbacks in the FBS.

His 2015 output highlighted not only his arm talent but his grasp of spacing and timing in a dynamic offense, pushing the Hilltoppers into national conversations and placing him among the era’s most prolific collegiate passers.

Patrick Mahomes | YDS: 5,052 – Season: 2016

Patrick Mahomes (Source: Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

Long before his NFL stardom, Patrick Mahomes electrified the Texas Tech offense in 2016 with a season defined by improvisation and arm talent. He threw for 5,052 yards, blending traditional Air Raid principles with unpredictable playmaking that kept defenses guessing.

That year featured some of the most chaotic and high-scoring shootouts in the college game, and his performance against Oklahoma — where he tied the NCAA single-game passing yard mark — became emblematic of his fearless style. His 2016 campaign remains a touchstone of athletic brilliance and offensive innovation.

While he's already done playing, Derek Carr doesn't know what the future holds for him.
Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr made his thoughts clear on a potential return to the field. Out of Fresno State, Carr was selected with the No. 36 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

He spent his 11-year career with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints, where he retired in May. At the time, he opted against a $30 million guaranteed salary with the Saints, as he decided to retire instead of undergoing shoulder injury.

Carr is focused on healing his shoulder at the moment, but he’s not thinking of a potential return to the field right now. However, he admits that could change eventually.

Derek Carr doesn’t rule out NFL return

Talking on “The Dan Patrick Show,” Carr explained why he is still training despite announcing his retirement earlier his year.

Derek Carr #4 of the New Orleans Saints

“I wouldn’t say never because I’ve learned that when I say never, it usually happens,” Carr said. “I think we’ve all probably learned that. So, for me right now, I’m training because I love to train. That’s gonna be the rest of my life. I love to train. I throw a football every now and then out in the front with my kids and with my buddy for fun, because it’s part of my rehab still for my shoulder. I’m still just trying to get that back right from getting the shot and doing the rehab and all that. So I’m still doing those things. And so I always felt like, even though I’m done, if God wanted me to do it, I’ve got to be ready. I don’t want to go out there and not be ready, you know. So I’ll be ready, but I’m not coming back. Like, right now, today, I’m not coming back.”

In 169 games, Carr completed 3,765 passes on 5,785 attempts and racked up 41,245 yards and 257 touchdowns. The Saints named Spencer Rattler the starting quarterback while Tyler Shough develops his game, but time will tell if their plans don’t change soon.

Patrick Mahomes has had many rivals during his career. One of them called it quits last offseason, by retiring from the NFL. However, recent interviews have made it clear that, if the right situation or opportunity presents, the former four-time Pro Bowler could contemplate returning to the gridiron.

Derek Carr battled against Mahomes and the Chiefs for years in the AFC West as the Raiders’ quarterback. He then spent a couple of seasons in New Orleans, but injuries didn’t cut him slack, which prompted him to retire after 11 years in the NFL.

Recently, Carr appeared on the Dan Patrick Show. When asked if there is temptation to go back to the NFL, Carr said, “I always felt like, even though I’m done, if God wanted me to do it, I’ve got to be ready. I don’t want to go out there and not be ready, you know. So I’ll be ready, but I’m not coming back. Like, right now, today, I’m not coming back.” He is leaving the door half open, if the right opportunity presents, then he’d contemplate the idea.

Carr was an above average quarterback

In a league where quarterbacks are constantly evolving, rising or falling, Carr was the epitome of consistency. He was never regarded as a top 5 signal-caller, but was also respected and, if not given serious care, he would burn secondaries to the ground.

Derek Carr when he played for the Las Vegas Raiders

Carr ended his career with a 65% completion percentage, 41,245 yards, 257 touchdowns to 112 interceptions. He was third in the MVP voting in 2016 and had four Pro Bowl selections. He also had some memorable shootouts against Mahomes and the Chiefs.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/chiefs-and-steelers-eye-tyreek-hill-move-what-could-deter-him-from-leaving-the-dolphins" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20250911_BUS_490458_Tyreek-Hill-wide-receiver-of-the-Miami-Dolphins.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="Tyreek Hill's time in the Miami Dolphins might be nearing an end. With two teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Kansas City Chiefs lurking, there is one key factor that could stop any talks of a change.

Would Carr be a good option for a team?

If a team reaches Carr, it’s likely a team who suffered a season-ending injury to its starting quarterback. However, while a healthy Carr should give you a reasonably high floor, he is still rehabbing from a shoulder injury that literally limited his throwing ability.

Hence, the reasonably thing to assume is no calls would come in Carr’s direction. However, due to his words we can suppose he will try to stay in football shape just in case.

Derek Carr shocked fans by choosing retirement over a lucrative contract with the New Orleans Saints. Battling a persistent shoulder injury, Carr opened up about why stepping away was the right decision for his health and peace of mind.
Derek Carr finally explained publicly why he decided to retire from the NFL, despite the fact that, had he stayed with the New Orleans Saints, he would have secured a hefty $30 million payment for the 2025 season. The quarterback revealed his thought process during an exclusive interview with Front Office Sports.

“That part was tough because I didn’t want to have surgery and just sit there and, it sounds crazy but, just take the Saints’ money. I wouldn’t have been able to play if I had the surgery and then, if I tried to play with it, I wasn’t near 100%. So, that doesn’t help them either. I just felt like it was the right thing to do for myself and for the team.”

Carr had to choose retirement due to a shoulder injury that prevents him from continuing his professional career. Now, the Saints are in a real predicament as they try to find their quarterback of the future.

Who will be the next Saints’ starting quarterback?

Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Hunter Dekkers will compete for the starting quarterback job with the New Orleans Saints. Jake Haener was also in the mix, but at the moment, he’s battling an injury (oblique strain).

The New Orleans Saints are in a unique situation when it comes to their QB1. Derek Carr was clearly the choice until he decided to retire from the NFL this offseason. This left a team with little to no cap space in a dire situation. Now, they have three young, unproven QBs fighting for the starting spot.

One of them, Jake Haener, stirred the pot when speaking to Saints’ reporter Matthew Paras about the Saints needing a veteran QB. “I mean, what are you going to get from that?” Haener stated. He alluded that the team’s staff is full of former QBs and that’s enough for the young guys to learn.

“Those guys [on staff] are veterans, man. They’ve done it. They’ve been through it“. Haener also added that the QB room has “everything you need in terms of what to look for, what to ask, what to see. They’ve seen it all.“

Haener is competing with second-year QB Spencer Rattler and rookie Tyler Shough. According to the interview, he said that having former QBs like Kellen Moore (now the Saints’ HC), Doug Nussmeier, Scott Tolzien, and Scott Linehan is great. It allows the young QBs to have different perspectives and bring new ways to evolve.

Jake Haener #3 of the New Orleans Saints looks on during the game against the Tennessee Titans at Mercedes Benz Superdome on August 25, 2024 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

A not-so fierce competition to be the Saints’ starting QB

It’s not an understatement to say that the Saints might have the worst QB room in the entire NFL right now. After all, they mismanaged their cap space in recent years and suffered big retirements. First, future Hall-of-Famer Drew Brees retired in 2020 after more than 15 years of service.

His meteoric rise and impact are reflected in his wealth. Check out his fortune.
" title="Kellen Moore’s net worth: How much fortune does the New Orleans Saints coach have?" publication_id="BUS#/nfl/kellen-moore-net-worth">

Then, they tried an awful mix of Jameis Winston, Trevor Siemian and Taysom Hill in 2021. Somehow, Sean Payton managed to coach the team into a 9-8 record. But then Payton also retired (for a year). In 2022, it was the ‘Red Rifle’ Andy Dalton who emerged as the signal-caller. A year later, the Saints signed Derek Carr, an established veteran QB to take the mantle. Injuries didn’t respect him, hence his early retirement.

So now that leaves the Saints with Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough. Between Rattler and Haener, they have a combined record of 0-7 in the NFL. None of them boast a decent completion percentage, as Rattler’s is 57% and Haener’s is an abysmal 46.2%. The two of them combined for 5 TDs and 6 INTs. And as for Shough, well, he was taken in the second round of this year’s draft, but wasn’t a top prospect at all.

Saints reporter Luke Johnson stated that Shough “can absolutely spin it“. It’s been reported that Shough has impressed more than his colleagues.
Alvin Kamara will no longer have his starting quarterback Derek Carr, so the New Orleans Saints have already made a new move to find a potential replacement ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
The world of the New Orleans Saints was shaken last week by the unexpected retirement of starting quarterback Derek Carr after being affected by a shoulder injury. The NFC South franchise, led by star Alvin Kamara, is now looking for a replacement to lead the offense in the 2025 NFL season.

After Carr‘s surprising retirement, the Saints find themselves at a crossroads at the quarterback position. Rookie Tyler Shough, selected with the 40th pick in the second round, appears as a strong option to take the spot. However, the franchise continues to explore other alternatives.

Spencer Rattler, selected in the fifth round of the 2024 Draft, has had limited opportunities in his first year. With a season of experience, he will look to compete for the starting position, making him one of the most viable options to throw passes to a key weapon like Kamara.

The new Saints player who could replace Carr

The newest addition to Kamara’s Saints is none other than Hunter Dekkers, the undrafted quarterback who joined the team after a tryout at rookie minicamp. After spending a season at Iowa Western Community College, he’s now looking for an opportunity in the NFL.
