Kenley Jansen moves into third place on MLB’s all-time saves list after a clutch outing in the Detroit Tigers’ win over the Kansas City Royals.
The Detroit Tigers continue to rely on Kenley Jansen in high-pressure moments, and the veteran closer delivered again while reaching a major career milestone. With his latest outing, Jansen moved into third place on MLB’s all-time saves list, further solidifying his legacy.

Jansen recorded his 479th career save by closing out a 2–1 win over the Kansas City Royals. With the tying run on base, he stayed in control and induced a routine fly ball to end the game. Afterward, Jansen reflected on the moment, saying: “It’s awesome. It tells me that no matter the adversity you go through in life, in your baseball career, at some point, you think you’re done, but you always have that fight in you.”

With that save, Jansen now trails only Mariano Rivera, who recorded 652 saves, and Trevor Hoffman, who finished his career with 601 saves, on the all-time list. The achievement highlights both his consistency and longevity as one of the top closers in the game.

Jansen continues to deliver in key moments

Jansen continues to be a lock in tight spots. His veteran experience was on full display again, providing much-needed stability for a Tigers pitching staff that recently added Yoniel Curet to address rotation depth.

For the Tigers, having a closer they can trust in close games is critical. Jansen’s presence gives the team confidence whenever they carry a narrow lead into the final inning.

Milestone adds to Hall of Fame résumé

Reaching third place on the all-time saves list puts Jansen in elite company. His career has been defined by durability, performance, and the ability to succeed over many seasons.

The Detroit Tigers claimed Yoniel Curet from the Philadelphia Phillies to address mounting rotation concerns, adding a young arm who could help sooner than expected.
The Detroit Tigers made a needed move to improve their pitching depth, claiming Yoniel Curet off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies as concerns around the rotation continue to grow. With injuries and inconsistent performances affecting the staff, Detroit is adding a young arm who could become part of the mix sooner than expected.

The team announced the move on Monday, opening a roster spot by placing center fielder Parker Meadows on the 60-day injured list, shortly after AJ Hinch voiced concern following his recent collision. Curet, 23, was added to the 40‑man roster and optioned to the Florida Complex League as he builds up before a possible assignment to Triple‑A Toledo.

Although he has not yet reached the major leagues, Curet brings strong upside. He posted a 1.45 ERA and a 0.911 WHIP in Double-A last season, along with 62 strikeouts in 55.1 innings across multiple levels, showing clear swing-and-miss ability that Detroit is currently looking for.

Tigers add depth as rotation issues continue

Detroit’s rotation has already been tested early in the season, with injuries and uneven performances forcing the team to look for reinforcements. Curet fits that need as a versatile arm who can work both as a starter and out of the bullpen.

Yoniel Curet joins the Tigers as the team looks for answers amid early rotation struggles. Stephen Brashear/Getty Images

The Tigers are expected to stretch him out as a starter, giving him time to develop while also preparing him for a possible role at the major league level if needed.

Chance to rise quickly in Detroit

Given the current state of the pitching staff, Detroit may not be able to wait long if help becomes necessary. The organization needs reliable innings, and Curet could move up quickly if he performs well in the minors.

For now, his focus will be on development, but the path is clear. If he continues to miss bats and show consistency, a major league debut in Detroit could come sooner rather than later.

Detroit Tigers manager AJ Hinch reacted with concern after Parker Meadows exits with injury following a scary collision against Minnesota Twins.
Concern quickly became the focus for the Detroit Tigers after Parker Meadows left Thursday’s game following a hard outfield collision. Manager AJ Hinch spoke after the game and made it clear the situation is being taken seriously.

After the game, Hinch shared his reaction to what he saw on the field. “There’s a lot of concern for him, just because when we got out there, it looked like he had bitten his lip or the inside of his mouth. So there was some blood, and he was pretty out of it,” he said after the game.

Hinch also added, “Those are scary collisions. You don’t know what you’re going to get when you get there. Obviously, we’re going to get him checked out for everything, but this one worries me.”

The play happened in the eighth inning against the Minnesota Twins, when Meadows collided with Riley Greene while chasing a fly ball. He stayed down briefly, appeared disoriented, and was later taken to a local hospital for observation. Before the injury, the 26‑year‑old was hitting .250 in 12 games, at a time when the Tigers made roster decision on Justin Verlander after confirming left hip inflammation, adding to the team’s concerns.

Parker Meadows is carted off the field after a nasty collision in the outfield with Riley Greene pic.twitter.com/5DCBp95WK9
— Talkin' Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) April 9, 2026

Collision raises concern inside Tigers clubhouse

The biggest concern came from how Meadows looked right after the play. Medical staff rushed in quickly as he showed signs of confusion, which made the situation more worrying for the team.

Plays like this are always difficult because the impact can vary, and it’s not always clear right away how serious the injury is. In this case, the visible bleeding and Meadows’ reaction added to the concern.

Tigers adjust as they await updates

After Meadows left the game, Javier Báez moved to center field, and Kevin McGonigle entered at shortstop. Detroit, tied at the time, went on to lose 3-1, completing a four-game sweep and extending its losing streak to five games.

While the loss added to a tough stretch for the team, the main focus is now on Meadows’ condition. The Tigers will wait for more updates as they determine the next steps after the incident.

The Detroit Tigers made a roster decision on Justin Verlander after confirming left hip inflammation, adjusting their plans as they monitor the veteran’s recovery
The Detroit Tigers have made a key roster decision involving Justin Verlander, placing the veteran right-hander on the 15-day injured list with left hip inflammation. The move delays what was set to be his highly anticipated return to Comerica Park, where he was scheduled to start for the first time since 2017.

According to Bob Nightengale, “Detroit Tigers great Justin Verlander, who was scheduled to make his first start Sunday night at Comerica Park since 2017, is now going on the 15-day IL with left hip inflammation.” The update confirms the setback just as Verlander was preparing for a meaningful moment in front of Detroit fans.

At 43, Verlander is the oldest active player in Major League Baseball and returned to Detroit this offseason on a one-year, $13 million deal after spending last season with the San Francisco Giants. He made 380 starts for the Tigers between 2005 and 2017, establishing himself as one of the franchise’s most iconic pitchers.

Rotation adjustment after Verlander setback

With Verlander sidelined, the Tigers have recalled right-hander Keider Montero from Triple-A Toledo. He is expected to start the series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals, giving Detroit a temporary replacement as they adjust their rotation plans.

Justin Verlander #35 of the Tigers is introduced during prior to playing the Cardinals. Gregory Shamus/Getty Images

Verlander struggled in his season debut, allowing five runs on six hits in 3⅔ innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but the focus now shifts to his recovery timeline rather than performance.

What this means for Detroit moving forward

The injury postpones an emotional milestone for both Verlander and the organization, as his return to Comerica Park was expected to be one of the early highlights of the Tigers’ season.

Detroit will now rely on its pitching depth while monitoring Verlander’s progress, hoping the veteran can return soon and provide stability to the rotation as the season unfolds.

After a stint with the New York Yankees, Austin Slater is heading South. The veteran outfielder has pivoted from Detroit, reaching an agreement with the Miami Marlins for the upcoming season.
The Miami Marlins have finalized a deal with veteran outfielder Austin Slater, bringing the former Detroit Tiger to South Florida just in time for the 2026 campaign.

On March 21, Slater exercised a release clause in his contract after being informed he would not break camp on the Tigers’ Opening Day roster. The clause granted him immediate free agency, allowing former New York Yankees‘ player to survey the market before ultimately landing with the Marlins.

To clear a spot for Slater on the 40-man roster, Miami placed right-hander Adam Mazur on the 60-day injured list, despite he just had a Tommy John surgery.

While Slater spent the duration of spring training in the Tigers‘ camp, he is expected to be available for the Marlins’ season opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Austin Slater #29 of the Yankees bats against the Rays.

Manager Clayton McCullough now faces a quick turnaround to integrate the veteran into the lineup, as Slater has yet to see game action in a Marlins uniform.

Slater, a proven weapon against lefties

Slater brings a specific, high-value skill set to Miami’s young outfield core. While the Marlins will lean heavily on the development of Jakob Marsee, Owen Caissie, and Griffin Conine, Slater provides a seasoned insurance policy—specifically against southpaws.

The veteran has built a career out of punishing left-handed pitching, boasting a .787 OPS across more than 1,000 career plate appearances in those matchups.

Beyond the bat, his ability to defend all three outfield positions provides McCullough with much-needed late-inning flexibility over the 162-game grind.

Slater’s spring training by the numbers

Despite being odd-man-out in A.J. Hinch’s plans, Slater put up respectable numbers in Grapefruit League play this spring:

Slash Line: .267/.389/.467

OPS: .856

Games Played: 15

While those figures weren’t enough to secure a spot in Detroit, they suggest Slater is seeing the ball well heading into April. Now settled in Miami, the veteran will look to prove that the Tigers’ loss is the Marlins’ gain.

The Mets emerge as a top contender for Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, with urgency and roster fit positioning New York to pursue a midseason blockbuster.
The New York Mets are reportedly in prime position to pursue Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal before the July trade deadline, according to MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince. With Skubal entering his walk-year after two Cy Young Awards and a landmark $32 million arbitration win this winter, the Mets could be the team most motivated to make a blockbuster move for the young left-hander.

Castrovince highlighted the urgency for New York. “A Mets team highly, highly motivated to make the most of its lavish but flawed roster will give up, say, Jonah Tong to get him and be in a great position to be the team that perhaps takes down the Dodgers in the (National League) field,” he wrote via MLB.com. The report paints the Mets as a contender willing to pay a premium for a short-term boost in their rotation.

Detroit, meanwhile, may face challenges keeping Skubal if they fall behind in the American League Central. With signs that, after Freddy Peralta, NY Mets not expected to reach extension ahead of 2026, New York could be pushed toward the trade market, Castrovince noted that Skubal’s looming free agency may complicate Detroit’s plans. A midseason deal could hinge on contenders showing enough urgency.

Mets’ urgency could define the market

With a roster that combines high-end talent with gaps in pitching depth, acquiring a front-line starter could provide the Mets a critical edge down the stretch. If the Mets act decisively, they might force the Tigers into considering a trade for a player they have valued highly, like Skubal.

Mets emerge as a top contender for Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. Getty Images

The scenario also underscores the risk-reward calculus for the Tigers. Holding onto Skubal until free agency preserves long-term control but could frustrate a team looking for immediate playoff relevance. For the Mets, a successful trade would hinge on balancing short-term performance with the cost of parting with top prospects.

Implications for the AL and NL Races

If Skubal moves to New York, the ripple effects would be felt across both leagues. Detroit could struggle to maintain its divisional lead if Skubal departs, while the Mets would bolster a rotation already designed to contend in a crowded National League field.

Team USA boasts a formidable starting rotation anchored by Tarik Skubal, whose participation has become a focal point of the World Baseball Classic. Despite the Detroit Tigers’ initial expectation, Skubal has fueled speculation.
The 2026 World Baseball Classic is officially underway for Team USA, and manager Mark DeRosa turned to Tarik Skubal to anchor the rotation in Houston. Following a dominant, albeit brief, outing against Great Britain on Saturday night, the Detroit Tigers‘ ace has sparked a firestorm of speculation regarding his future in the tournament, though his MLB club appears to have a much firmer timeline in mind.

After throwing three sharp innings at Daikin Park, Skubal was asked about the possibility of extending his stay with the national team. Tigers ace’s postgame comments to Fox and the New York Post suggested a change of heart. “This is one of the toughest decisions of my career, but I’m definitely considering pitching again for Team USA,” Skubal admitted, straying from the pre-tournament script.

Skubal’s pitch limit for Team USA vs. Great Britain at World Baseball Classic was revealed before immediately rejoining Tigers camp in Lakeland to prepare for Opening Day, but this potential decision could change everything in the Tigers’ plans.

With the ball now in his court, the 29-year-old ace seems invigorated by the WBC atmosphere. After a 2025 season where he carried the Tigers to within one game of the ALCS, Skubal’s health remains the most valuable currency in Detroit, and his desire to keep chasing a gold medal is clearly at odds with the team’s conservative ramp-up plan.

TARIK SKUBAL SERVES UP A HOME RUN TO NATE EATON ON THE FIRST PITCH OF THE GAME pic.twitter.com/xiylZiTeso
— Talkin' Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) March 8, 2026

A.J. Hinch stands firm on Skubal’s return

Despite Skubal’s public lobbying for another start, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch delivered a sobering reality check. Speaking on the Fox broadcast shortly after the news broke, Hinch’s stance on his ace’s availability was unwavering, emphasizing the priority of the upcoming 162-game marathon.

“I’m FULLY expecting Tarik to be back in camp on Monday,” Hinch revealed. The comment highlights a growing tension between the pitcher and the organization. While Skubal secured a historic $32 million salary in arbitration this winter, the Tigers—who just bolstered their staff with the $115 million signing of Framber Valdez—are clearly unwilling to risk their primary Cy Young weapon in a March exhibition.

Skubal’s dominant USA debut

The clamor for an encore is easy to understand given Skubal’s efficiency on Saturday night. Despite surrendering a first-pitch leadoff home run to Nate Eaton, the lefty settled in to showcase why he remains the most feared arm in baseball. Let’s look at the numbers from his lone WBC outing.

Innings Pitched (IP): 3.0

Hits (H): 2

Runs (R): 1

Earned Runs (ER): 1

Strikeouts (K): 5

Walks (BB): 0

Pitches (Strikes): 41(30)

Max Velocity: 98.4 mph

Tarik Skubal will not be able to log the number of innings he typically does in an MLB game, but it could still be enough to help Team USA keep Great Britain in check during the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
Tarik Skubal will be heavily limited to fewer than 60 pitches in his lone appearance at the World Baseball Classic. He is scheduled to help Team USA in its March 7 matchup against Great Britain, the national team’s second game of the tournament, before returning to his MLB club.

The report came from Bob Nightengale on X (@bnightengale): “The plan is for two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal to throw about 55 pitches against Great Britain in the second game of the WBC and then return to Lakeland to rejoin the Tigers.”

Roughly 55 pitches from Skubal would translate to about three innings, possibly a bit more. That could benefit Team USA if it manages to generate runs early against the British squad. Skubal typically features high velocity through the first three innings, often touching 100-plus mph.

Mixed reaction to Skubal’s limited workload

Team USA fans voiced frustration on X after learning Skubal would be capped at 55 pitches and would not return to pitch for the national team, even if it advances to the World Baseball Classic final.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Pure DOMINANCE from Tarik Skubal!

“Tarik Skubal being limited to just 55 pitches against Great Britain, and it being his only game in the WBC, is an absolute disgrace! A waste of time and roster spot. This reflects poorly on all involved — Skubal, the Tigers, Boras, etc. Either you commit 100% or don’t, simple!” Dan Clark of TBLDaily.com wrote on X.

It’s worth noting that the WBC has pitch-count restrictions for Round 1, with pitchers limited to 65 pitches per outing. That leaves open the possibility that Skubal could exceed the reported 55-pitch plan and reach the tournament’s maximum threshold set by organizers.

“It’s Great Britain though. Skubal could throw a complete game with 55 pitches against a team of plumbers. There’s a 15-run mercy rule that applies after five innings. This isn’t Japan or the Dominican Republic. Canada beat Great Britain 18-8 in the last WBC,” another fan wrote on X.

The World Baseball Classic is fast approaching, and Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal has expressed his excitement about taking the mound for Team USA in Game 1.
After winning his arbitration hearing, Tarik Skubal and the Detroit Tigers are gearing up for the upcoming regular season. However, before that happens, Skubal has set his sights on representing Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, which is fast approaching.

In a recent interview on the Flipping Bats Podcast, Skubal discussed his decision to pitch in just one game for Team USA in the tournament. “If this tournament was in the middle of the season like hockey, I’d have no problem throwing in both games for Team USA,” Skubal explained.

Skubal further elaborated on his decision, addressing expectations for his contribution to the team. “If you look at my velocity as the year progresses, I’m just not built up to throw four or five innings at 99-101 mph. I’m just not there yet,“ he remarked.

Faced with the challenge of delivering a standout performance in the WBC for Team USA in that one game, Skubal is determined to help the nation vie for the title. Japan pose the team to beat, with their status as reigning champions.

USA’s pitching rotation for the WBC

Alongside Skubal, Team USA are placing its confidence in several talented pitchers on the roster, hoping to make a significant impact on the mound in this year’s World Baseball Classic.

With this lineup and under the leadership of Team Captain Aaron Judge, along with the talent of Bryce Harper, Team USA aspire to capture the World Baseball Classic title, marking nine years since their first win in the tournament’s history.

Scott Boras addressed Tarik Skubal’s upcoming free agency, clarifying trade rumors and potential interest from teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York clubs while emphasizing the left-hander will start the season with the Detroit Tigers.
The 2026 MLB season is almost here, and Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal is one of the most talked-about players. The two-time Cy Young award winner will become a free agent after the season, and speculation about where he might end up is heating up.

Teams across the league have already been linked to Skubal, especially those with payroll space to pursue top starting pitching. The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets have been the names most often mentioned as potential landing spots for the left-hander.

Despite the rumors, Skubal will start the season with the Tigers. His agent, Scott Boras, has made it clear that Skubal’s next contract will likely take him away from the Tigers, as the team probably won’t be able to match the top-dollar deal his client will command.

Boras comments on Skubal’s market

Boras spoke about the free-agent market for Skubal, making it clear that top teams aren’t the only ones in play. “Even though it was a year ago with Ohtani… multiple teams from not only the West Coast and East Coast bidding on this player, but multiple teams that were interested in really going to the market to get the game’s best talent,” Boras said.

Tarik Skubal #29 of the Tigers pitches during the second inning of a spring training game.
He added, “Limiting it to New York or LA teams is just not accurate, because this is a talent-driven business. This is what brings you world championships: having number one starters.”

What Skubal’s free agency could look like

“This is what brings you world championships: having number one starters. We learned from Gerrit Cole what that meant to the Yankees and what allowed them to compete annually for the World Series,” Boras said

Boras emphasized that any team willing to invest in an elite starter could pursue Skubal, making the market competitive. “I fully would imagine that it’s good business to go out and try to get someone that you can’t get because acquiring a player like this… it’s going to be years before you’ll have an opportunity to acquire anyone like him for some time,” Boras added.

The Detroit Tigers strengthened their bullpen depth by adding a veteran left‑hander after he was released by the New York Mets, bringing experience ahead of the new season.
The Detroit Tigers added bullpen depth this week by signing veteran left-hander Colin Poche following his release from the New York Mets, according to reports. With relief pitching often changing from year to year, Detroit decided to bring in an experienced arm before the season begins.

Poche, 32, has five years of Major League experience. At this point last season, he was expected to help the Washington Nationals bullpen. However, after a tough start, he returned to free agency and briefly signed twice with the Mets before being released in August.

Driveline Baseball reported Wednesday that Poche agreed to a minor-league contract with Detroit. Chris McCosky of The Detroit News added that he will not receive a non-roster invite to Major League camp.

Can Poche earn another MLB opportunity?

There is no guarantee he will return to the majors, but Poche has shown he can be effective. His best season came in 2023 with the Tampa Bay Rays, when he posted a 2.26 ERA over 60 2/3 innings and surprisingly recorded 12 wins as a reliever. After debuting in 2019, Poche missed the 2020 and 2021 seasons due to Tommy John surgery before working his way back.

Colin Poche #41 with the Nationals looks on after been substituted.
What this means for Detroit

The Tigers’ bullpen does not have many proven left-handed options. If Poche starts the season at Triple-A and performs well, he could earn another big-league chance. For Detroit, this is a low-risk move that could provide valuable depth if the veteran lefty finds his form again.
