The New York Giants just made a quiet move that could lead to something bigger.
The New York Giants continue to make calculated roster decisions as they reshape the team, and their latest move reflects a clear commitment to both performance and financial flexibility. According to Jordan Raanan, the Giants have declined the fifth-year option on cornerback Deonte Banks.

“Cornerback Deonte Banks’ fifth-year option is being declined by the Giants. Hardly a surprise given his struggles the past few seasons. Essentially the Giants declined to pick up an option that would have put Banks under contract in 2027 for $12.633 million. Instead, he’s fighting for playing time with second-round pick Colton Hood and free-agent signing Greg Newsome in his way.”

The decision signals that the Giants are unwilling to commit significant future salary to a player who has yet to fully meet expectations. Rather than locking in that cap hit for 2027, they are opting for flexibility, both in terms of roster competition and long-term planning.

Giants prioritizing cap flexibility for bigger moves

That financial discipline ties directly into the team’s broader offseason strategy. The Giants are being deliberate with their resources, knowing they may need room to make a major addition along the defensive line.

Following the departure of Dexter Lawrence, reinforcing the interior of the defense has become a top priority. While the Giants have already added Shelby Harris, the job is not complete. Depth, and a true anchor in the middle, remains a need.

That’s where a potential pursuit of D.J. Reader comes into play. Landing a player of his caliber would likely require meaningful cap space, and decisions like declining Banks’ option help preserve that flexibility.

At the same time, the move increases competition in the secondary. Banks will now have to earn his role against younger and newly acquired talent, including Colton Hood and Greg Newsome.

In the end, this is a move that reflects the Giants’ current approach: prioritize production, protect future cap space, and stay aggressive in addressing key roster needs.

The Giants and John Harbaugh have a new priority after the 2026 NFL Draft.
The New York Giants are not done rebuilding their defensive line. After moving quickly to sign Shelby Harris, they have checked one major box, but another key piece is still missing following the departure of Dexter Lawrence.

According to Dan Duggan, the plan has been clear from the start: address both interior roles on the defensive front and the answer is D.J. Reader. “There’s one. Giants wanted a nose tackle and a three-technique. Harris the 3-tech. DJ Reader is the top target for NT.”

Harris fills an important role as a three-technique, bringing experience and stability to a unit that needed immediate reinforcement. But the job isn’t complete without a true presence in the middle of the line, a role Reader is seen as the ideal fit for.

Giants still targeting D.J. Reader

The distinction between the two positions is critical. While the three-technique focuses on penetration and disruption, the nose tackle anchors the defense, controls gaps, and absorbs blocks. Losing Lawrence left a void in both areas, and the Giants are working methodically to rebuild that structure.

D.J. Reader, widely regarded as one of the better interior defenders available, would give the Giants exactly what they still lack. His addition would not only complement Harris but also solidify the front seven as a whole.

For now, the Giants have taken the first step, but as Duggan’s report makes clear, the mission isn’t finished. If they can land Reader, the defensive line rebuild would go from a work in progress to a much more complete unit heading into the 2026 season.

Odell Beckham Jr. generated buzz after a recent workout with the Giants, but that doesn't mean a reunion is close.
The New York Giants are trying to improve their roster with a lot of moves. However, the brief connection to Odell Beckham Jr. may not be gaining as much traction as it initially seemed.

After a strong showing at the 2026 Fanatics Flag Football Classic and a subsequent workout with the team, Beckham quickly re-entered the conversation as a potential addition, but that momentum appears to be cooling.

According to Dan Duggan, there is little indication a deal is imminent. “Haven’t heard of anything coming from that. I remain skeptical they sign him.” As Joe Schoen and Joe Harbaugh try to build a Super Bowl contender, the veteran might not be an option in the near future.

Giants focused on rebuild, not nostalgia amid Odell Beckham Jr.’s rumors

That skepticism aligns with the broader context of the Giants’ offseason. While Odell Beckham Jr. generated buzz with his performance and drew interest internally, it was never a guarantee that would translate into a contract.

Even head coach John Harbaugh has emphasized that both sides would need to continue conversations and evaluate whether a deal makes sense, particularly given where Beckham is in his career and his current physical condition.

The Giants’ priorities also help explain the hesitation. They are firmly in a rebuilding phase, coming off a draft that focused heavily on foundational pieces like Arvell Reese and Francis Mauigoa.

Giants WR depth chart without Odell Beckham Jr.

The New York Giants also addressed the wide receiver group by adding Malachi Fields during the 2026 Draft, who joins Malik Nabers as part of a young offensive core expected to grow alongside quarterback Jaxson Dart.

In that context, Beckham would likely be viewed as a complementary option, potentially a WR3, rather than a centerpiece addition. While his experience and familiarity with the franchise could bring value, the Giants appear more focused on long-term development than short-term reunions.

There’s also the matter of roster balance. Following the departure of Dexter Lawrence, reinforcing the defensive line has become a top priority. The addition of Shelby Harris reflects that urgency, and it suggests that resources, both financial and strategic, are being directed toward stabilizing the front seven.

For now, Beckham remains an intriguing possibility but not a likely outcome. The Giants have done their due diligence, but as things stand, their focus appears to be elsewhere as they continue shaping the next phase of the roster.

Despite signing Shelby Harris, the New York Giants are still shopping for help on the defensive line to fill Dexter Lawrence's void in the 2026 NFL season.
The New York Giants know addressing the interior of their defensive line is a big must. Thus, after New York traded Dexter Lawrence away, it’s well aware that only signing Shelby Harris won’t be enough. Ahead of the 2026 NFL season, the G-Men will remain in the market for defensive and nose tackles.

The Giants have secured a pivotal Lawrence replacement by signing Harris, however, that’s still not enough. Because of how dominant Lawrence was at the line of scrimmage, New York understands a one-for-one move won’t cut it. Thus, the Giants are still eyeing defensive linemen.

As Connor Hughes from SportsNet New York simply put it: “[Harris] won’t be the only IDL the Giants sign.“ It makes sense and was expected, as the Giants reportedly planned to sign both D.J. Reader and Shelby Harris to replace Lawrence.

A nose tackle signing is crucial for Harbaugh’s NY Giants

One step of their plan has been completed, but the final one is just as pivotal. Harris fits New York’s need for a three-technique defensive lineman, but Reader would give them a crucial nose tackle (0-technique).

Dexter Lawrence II #97 former New York Giant

John Harbaugh often favors a base 3-4 alignment on the defensive side of the ball. It can shift to a 4-3 formation occasionally, but the former is preferred by the Super Bowl-winning head coach. In any 3-4 system, the nose tackle position is crucial. A 0-technique nose tackle aligns directly in front of the opposing center. Lawrence did a better job than any other player in the NFL at that spot on the gridiron.

Therefore, the Giants are in for a steep climb to replace him and get even a fraction of Lawrence’s production from their next nose tackle. Still, Reader may be as good as any option available across the league. Harris, on the other hand, is a 3-technique D-lineman—a pure defensive tackle. He lines up against the outside shoulder of guards but becomes ineffective when double-teamed. Thus, having a nose tackle who can carry that burden becomes pivotal.

Giants’ starting front seven

Signing Harris shines a light on Harbaugh’s intentions to rely on a 4-3 system sporadically. One thing is clear: New York won’t be a one-trick pony in 2026, and the NFL should take cover because the organization in East Rutherford has put together a front seven that can send chills down any offensive coordinator’s spine.

As it stands, the Giants could start a defensive front featuring Darius Alexander, Sam Roberts (who could be replaced by D.J. Reader), Shelby Harris, Abdul Carter, Arvell Reese, Tremaine Edmunds, and Brian Burns.

Moreover, the G-Men’s depth could include the likes of Kayvon Thibodeaux, Roy Robertson-Harris, Bobby Jamison-Travis, and Micah McFadden, among others. The offense steals the spotlight, but on Broadway, it might be the revamped defense that runs the show.

The Giants are open to trading Kayvon Thibodeaux, but only for the right price.
The New York Giants remain one of the most active teams of the offseason, and their approach to reshaping the defense continues to generate headlines. After moving on from Dexter Lawrence and working to reinforce the defensive line, the front office is also exploring the possibility of trading Kayvon Thibodeaux, but only at the right price.

According to a report from Dan Duggan, there has already been real interest around the league. “The Saints were the team most interested in trading for Thibodeaux. However, according to a league source, the problem was the sides weren’t close on potential compensation. The Saints’ best offer is believed to have been a fourth-round pick (No. 132), while the Giants were seeking a second-round pick. The Saints had the 42nd selection.”

That gap in valuation is significant and helps explain why no deal has materialized. The Giants clearly still view Thibodeaux as a premium asset, even amid roster changes and ongoing adjustments to their defensive identity.

Giants sign Shelby Harris to replace Dexter Lawrence

The Giants’ stance also aligns with their broader offseason strategy. They have already taken steps to rebuild the front seven, including adding young talent through the draft and moving quickly to secure veteran help like Shelby Harris as a replacement for Dexter Lawrence.

At the same time, keeping Thibodeaux, unless the right offer emerges, suggests the Giants are not looking to create another major hole on defense without proper compensation. With uncertainty still surrounding parts of the unit, maintaining high-value players remains a priority.

The Saints’ interest confirms there is a market, but the current gap indicates teams may not yet be willing to meet New York’s asking price. That leaves the situation unresolved heading into the next phase of the offseason.

For now, the Giants are balancing two paths: continuing to strengthen the defensive line while keeping the door open for a potential trade. Whether Thibodeaux ultimately stays or goes may come down to whether another team is willing to match the value asked by general manager Joe Schoen.

After the departure of Dexter Lawrence, the New York Giants found his replacement by signing Shelby Harris.
The departure of Dexter Lawrence from the New York Giants left a difficult void to fill. However, after several days of analysis and in search of the best fit, the arrival of Shelby Harris appears to be the solution for John Harbaugh heading into what’s next.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz of FOX reported this move through his X account. Harris has an extensive career in the NFL, most recently with the Cleveland Browns, and is considered one of the most respected players at his position.

Selected in the 7th round, with the 235th overall pick by the Raiders in the 2014 Draft, the defensive tackle arrives in East Rutherford with experience and talent as his main attributes. Will he finally be the missing piece the G-Men need to become contenders in the NFC East?

Shelby Harris’ 2025 numbers

During the 2025 season with the Dawg Pound, veteran standout Shelby Harris remained a consistent presence on the interior, appearing in all 17 games and recording 32 combined tackles, 1 sack, and 4 passes defensed. Despite being 34 years old, Harris proved his value as a high-level rotational piece, earning a 64.4 run-defense grade from PFF, which ranked 28th among all interior defenders.

Shelby Harris #93.

He is considered a perfect fit for this transition to replace Dexter Lawrence’s void, because of his veteran leadership and specialized ability to disrupt both the run and pass.

Will D.J. Reader also arrive in New York?

The NY Giants reportedly plan to sign D.J. Reader as they continue to overhaul their defensive front following the trade of Dexter Lawrence. After his 2025 campaign with the Lions, where he started all 17 games and recorded 28 tackles, Reader is viewed as the ideal veteran anchor to stabilize the interior.

Strengthening the Giants’ defense

John Harbaugh has wasted no time reshaping the Giants’ defensive identity into a physical, “Ravens-style” unit through aggressive roster moves. In free agency, he targeted familiar talent and proven veterans, signing cornerback Greg Newsome and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds to lead the huddle, while adding defensive tackle Sam Roberts to bolster the interior.

He complemented these moves in the 2026 NFL Draft by selecting elite Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese with the fifth overall pick to serve as the new centerpiece of the front seven. By blending these established stars with high-upside rookies, Harbaugh has quickly turned a struggling unit into a formidable, disciplined group.

With Dexter Lawrence out of the picture, the New York Giants are resorting to the NFL free agent's market for replacements.
The New York Giants are wasting no time putting together their roster for the 2026 NFL season. Following the Draft and after trading Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals, addressing the nose and defensive tackle position is the main priority for John Harbaugh, Joe Schoen, and company.

As the compensatory pick formula has passed its deadline in the NFL, the Giants can accelerate the signing of D.J. Reader and other replacements for Lawrence without losing their projected compensatory selection in 2027 because of it. According to a report, the former’s arrival is imminent in New York, and another veteran like Shelby Harris could be on his way to the Big Apple, too.

“I think [the Giants] will sign Reader as the NT and sign another veteran three-technique, with Shelby Harris the top option for that role,” as reported by Dan Duggan of The Athletic on his X account.

Giants could resort to trade

Although the Giants reportedly have no intention to trade Kayvon Thibodeaux—and never had—it could all change if they can’t come away with players good enough to replace Lawrence. If New York’s shopping spree pays no dividends, fans could expect the front office to use the former first-round pick as a trade chip to acquire much-needed help on the interior of the defensive line.

Shelby Harris playing for the Cleveland Browns in 2025

After all, the G-Men are stacked on pass rushers from the edge, and have only added to that prowess with the selection of Arvell Reese in the 2026 NFL Draft. Meanwhile, the NT and DT positions appear to be the most vulnerable spot on New York’s defense.

NY Giants are desperate

As noted by Duggan, the Giants have no time to lose—nor margin for error. Reader is also in the crosshairs of the Baltimore Ravens, as Harbaugh’s former NFL team could prove to be a thorn in New York’s side. The veteran defensive tackle has visited the Ravens, just as he did the Giants, so both organizations may feel confident about coming away with him. However, the G-Men have more urgency than the Ravens.

Sam Roberts (a free agency signing from Atlanta) and Bobby Jamison-Travis are listed as New York’s nose tackles, per Ourlads.com, but neither has a résumé like Reader’s. Tasked with the virtually impossible mission of replacing the best nose tackle in all of football, Harbaugh knows he can’t mess this up before his first year in Bergen County.

Because Lawrence played such a big role in New York, one signing isn’t going to cut it, and the Giants must bring in more than one player to fill his void on the interior of the defensive line.

D. J. Reader at the 15th Annual NFL Honors

NY Giants target other DTs

Acquiring Reader is paramount, as it can set off a domino effect that leads to other talents like Harris joining the team. Obviously, the New York Giants know better than to put all their eggs in one basket. That’s why they’ve done their due diligence on several defensive tackles.

In addition to their interest in Reader and Harris, New York has hosted Benito Jones on a visit and continues to monitor the situation around Calais Campbell. The latter has yet to announce whether he’ll retire or give it another go in 2026.

If he does step back onto the gridiron, expect the Arizona Cardinals to pounce on him, but the G-Men could give the Cards a run for their money in a free agency bidding war.

Thanks to an NFL deadline, the New York Giants may be closer than ever to signing D.J. Reader or other defensive tackles to replace Dexter Lawrence.
Trading Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals, was only one step of the plan for the New York Giants. Ahead of the 2026 NFL season, the G-Men must address the interior of the defensive line, and moves are imminent. According to a report, it may be sooner than later.

The Giants have confirmed talks with defensive tackles to replace Lawrence ahead of John Harbaugh’s first NFL season in East Rutherford. Veteran defensive tackle D.J. Reader is arguably the biggest name linked to New York, as the former fifth-round selection in 2016 has visited the team’s facilities a couple of weeks ago. Due to a deadline in the league, such a signing could go down at any given moment.

As reported by USA Today‘s Art Stapleton, the deadline for the NFL’s compensatory pick formula was set on Monday, April 27 at 4 pm ET. Any free agency signing made after that won’t count for the 2027 compensatory pick formula. The Giants reportedly waited to sign Reader in order to protect their draft capital.

The wait will be over soon, and the 31-year-old DT could very well be on his way to The Big Apple. The fact the Giants have waived DeMarvin Leal, the team’s first signing under John Harbaugh, may be the final indicator that New York is set to go on a defensive-tackle shopping spree in the NFL offseason.

D.J. Reader during an NFL game with the Bengals

Why did the Giants wait until the deadline?

Though a very complex equation, in simple terms, the NFL’s compensatory pick formula is a system that awards extra draft picks to teams whose free agency departures outweigh their arrivals. For the G-Men, the formula currently projects them to obtain an extra selection in the 2027 NFL Draft.

Signing a player like Reader would most likely alter the formula and could lead the Giants to see their comp selection fall to a later round, or lose it entirely. The same logic applies to why New York is still taking things slow with Odell Beckham Jr. That could all change once the league reaches this next checkpoint in the long offseason schedule.

It’s still very early in the league calendar. Training camp is still a long way down the road, so New York was in no hurry to get Reader—or any defensive tackle signed to replace Lawrence—in town. Thus, waiting was the obvious choice, and the one Harbaugh and company took. Once the deadline passes, the Giants will be given the green light to go after Reader—and probably other DT options.

Giants are getting to work on Lawrence’s replacement

The void left behind by Lawrence’s dramatic trade won’t be filled by itself, and the G-Men are already getting to work. Most likely, papers are only waiting to be signed and sent to the NFL.

Once the league is past its compensatory pick formula deadline (April 27 at 4 p.m. ET), fans can expect a wave of free agent signings to go down. Chief among them may be New York’s plan to recover after losing one of its best players.

Other name to watch for NY Giants

In addition to Reader, who is looking like the top candidate, the Giants could add other depth options. Benito Jones, who played for the Miami Dolphins in 2024 and 2025, has also been on a visit in Bergen County. He is another name to watch as Harbaugh and company look to retool the interior of the D-line.

The New York Giants aren't done reshaping their defense after trading Dexter Lawrence.
The New York Giants are still searching for answers in the middle of their defense following the departure of Dexter Lawrence, and general manager Joe Schoen made it clear the work is not finished.

Despite multiple additions in the draft, they are actively exploring veteran options to reinforce a critical position. Lawrence’s exit left a significant void at defensive tackle, one that can’t be easily filled by rookies alone. While the Giants addressed the front seven with selections like Arvell Reese, Bobby Jamison-Travis, and Jack Kelly, the need for proven depth in the interior remains a priority.

Schoen confirmed that the Giants are already taking steps in that direction. “We’ve been in contact with several agents of veteran defensive tackles. So, we’ll continue to keep those communications open. We’ll see what happens next week. Maybe have a couple of more visits of some vet guys.”

Giants keep options open at defensive tackle

The Giants’ approach reflects both urgency and caution. Defensive tackle is a physically demanding position, and relying solely on young players, especially after losing a cornerstone like Lawrence, would carry risk.

Bringing in a veteran presence could help stabilize the unit while allowing the rookies to develop at a more measured pace. It also speaks to the Giants’ broader roster-building philosophy.

Even after an active draft, the front office is not treating the roster as complete. Instead, they’re continuing to evaluate the market, looking for players who can fit their system and contribute immediately.

With potential visits on the horizon, the situation remains fluid. The Giants have made it clear they are not done addressing the defensive line, and with a key gap still to fill, the next move could come sooner rather than later.

After watching how Maxx Crosby's trade failed, the New York Giants and Cincinnati Bengals tried to avoid the same situation when dealing for Dexter Lawrence.
When a star like Dexter Lawrence wants to leave a team so close to the NFL Draft, the best practice is to trade him when the team is on the clock. However, the New York Giants traded him before to the Cincinnati Bengals. Maxx Crosby might have influenced the decision.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, “it’s believed that the failed Maxx Crosby trade was a significant factor in getting the deal done early. As one source put it, both teams were concerned about Lawrence passing a physical. Pre-Crosby, that would have been less of a concern.”

For instance, this trade could’ve been similar to the AJ Brown trade in the 2022 Draft. However, the fear of not passing the physical test was bigger than the opportunity to get the most out of the trade.

The Bengals made the right move

Not only were the Bengals needing a guy like Dexter Lawrence on defense, but there were no players that are such a guaranteed force in defense like Lawrence. Hence, this was the best-case scenario for them.

Dexter Lawrence II #97 of the New York Giants.

Contrary to the Crosby situation, where the Ravens pivoted to Trey Hendrickson, there was no plan B for the Bengals. If they didn’t land Lawrence, they would’ve likely used their 10th pick and roll the dice on a rookie. Last season, their first pick was DE Shemar Stewart, and that ended up being a mess from the get-go.

The NY Giants still got a good return

The Giants used the 10th pick given by the Bengals to selece Francis Mauigoa, who could perfectly be a rock solid left tackle for the team, barring any injury setbacks. Mauigoa has a disc injury, but the Giants were comfortably fine picking him either way.

The Giants are exploring veteran help after losing Dexter Lawrence.
The New York Giants continue to explore options to reinforce their defensive front following a major roster shakeup. After moving on from Dexter Lawrence in a trade with the Cincinnati Bengals, the need for help along the defensive line has become increasingly urgent.

One potential solution recently emerged, as free agent defensive tackle Benito Jones, formerly of the Miami Dolphins, visited with the Giants. The meeting signals that they are actively evaluating veteran options to fill the void left in the middle of the defense.

While no deal has been finalized, the visit itself offers insight into how the franchise may approach roster building in the short term. Rather than relying solely on the draft, the Giants appear open to adding proven depth through free agency.

NY Giants’ strategy in 2026 NFL Draft

This development could also have ripple effects on the Giants’ plans for the 2026 NFL Draft. With the No. 5 and No. 10 overall picks, they have significant flexibility, and addressing defensive tackle in free agency may allow them to prioritize other positions early.

Recent speculation has linked the Giants to prospects like Caleb Downs and Jeremiyah Love, suggesting a potential focus on playmakers rather than interior defensive line help.

If that approach holds, the visit with Benito Jones could represent more than just depth. It may signal a broader strategic shift. For now, the Giants continue to evaluate their options as they reshape the roster heading into a pivotal offseason.
