Speculation over a transfer for Rossi has been brewing for the last few months as the 23-year-old was on the radar of various Premier League teams, with Reading, a league below, being the closest to sign the player but wanted it to be a loan deal that LAFC nixed.

Now Tom Bogert is reporting that Rossi is now in the sights of Fenerbahce of Turkey, one of the biggest teams in the country that is home to various players from South America. LAFC at one time was hoping for a transfer fee between $15 million – $20 million for Rossi but that remains to be seen.

According to reports, Rossi to Fenerbahce is in fifth gear as the Turkish club will want to register the young Uruguayan before squads are submitted for the Europa League. All rosters must be sent in by Thursday September 2nd. This is a clear sign Rossi would leave now rather than end of the season as in the case of other MLS transfers that are pending.

For LAFC the loss of Rossi is long overdue and almost happened last season, but Fiorentina and the player did not come to terms on salary according to reports. The covid pandemic hit the transfer market hard and finding suitors for Rossi at the price MLS and LAFC is asking for has been hard to find, while teams from the bigger leagues may not want to spend $15 million on a “MLS player” a team like Fenerbahce could swoop in and buy an amazing talent.

Rossi even in a down year is still LAFC’s most dangerous weapon up top and with the season shaping up to be an end of an era season, Bob Bradley’s and Carlos Vela’s contract is also up at season’s end, pulling the trigger on a Rossi transfer would help LAFC keep it’s word that they sell players on to bigger and better things. Cristian Arango was brought in to help out in attack at LAFC and now could be given the keys if Rossi is to move.

In a recent interview LAFC GM John Thorrington explained how the club wants to be a springboard to Europe, last season, according to reports, Rossi was a target of English club Reading, but LAFC had no intentions to loanone of their best players. Now the dynamics have changed with Tottenham and Everton interested in the player according to The Telegraph.

In the report, Rossi would command an estimated $14 million transfer fee, a fee that could very well push the ideal to the finish line. Rossi has recently been called into the Uruguayan national team but was ultimately left off of the Copa America roster, a move to Europe could help his national team cause. With other South American players like James Rodríguez on the team, and more accessible competition to beat, Rossi could almost instantly from day one fight for a starting position.

The transfer fee will be the key issue, at $14 million and the caliber of clubs, it is doubtful that the LAFC brass can say no to Rossi’s desire to move to Europe and to a club like Spurs or Everton. While hopes are that the Uruguayan can go for a $20 million transfer, Rossi is not on the national team, and against other players on the market that lowers his value. LAFC would make well over 100% of their initial investment, something MLS clubs want to cover in their transfer fees.

Diego Rossi is a quick and pesky finisher, who can play up front or on the wings. Being able to play in various positions could help get the move to the finish line. For now, Rossi will have his attention set on the restart of the MLS season where LAFC has not gotten off to the best start, but he has 3 goals in 5 games.

The Argentine heads to a new year in the MLS after being crowned with Columbus Crewin great fashion. He provided four goals in 2020 regular season and was influential to help his team lift the trophy with a brace in the final.

Mauricio Pereyra

The former Nacional of Uruguay talent came to Orlando City after seven years in Russia and has been excellent as the team’s creative leader for The Lions. Mauricio Pereyra has 6 goals in 96 matches for the club and was also a big part of their US Open Cup triumph in 2022.

Diego Fagúndez

Diego Fagúndez is only 27, but he seems to have been around forever. Born in Montevideo, he and his family moved to Massachusetts when Diego was 5 years old. The homegrown talent made his big-league debut in 2011 and would play 280games and score 54goals for the Revs. In 2021 Fagúndez was traded to Austin FC to revitalize his career, he did and has 14 goals in 71 games.

Diego Rossi

The former Peñarol youth product was nothing but money in MLS, 48goals in 104games, Rossi was recently called up to various Uruguay national team squads for World Cup Qualifiers. Diego Rossiwas eventually sold to Turkish club Fenerbahçe for a reported $10 million.

Nicolás Lodeiro

Nicolás Lodeiro is by far the greatest player to play in MLS from Uruguay. It has been a strange 25th anniversary for the league, MLS had planned a year-long celebration to remember it’s relatively short history. Then the covid-19 pandemic hit and put many if not all celebrations on hold.

It might be strange to see Ezequiel Barco on this list, given that he has played relatively very little in his three MLS seasons. The Argentine midfielder has show flashes of brilliance but never truly became a star in the league or in Atlanta United.

The Seattle Sounders fan favorite has been a key part of their midfield since 2015. CristianRoldan has played over 150 games for Rave Green and has also played for the USMNT. Fans may be shocked to find out that Roldan is only 25, seems like he has been around forever.

23. Lucas Zelarayan

One of the best newcomers to MLS this season, Lucas Zelarayan, came from Liga MX side Tigres and has been one of the best players in the league. The Argentine scored 6 goals in 16 games, but most importantly he revitalized the Columbus Crew’s midfield.

The lone bright spot in a dreadful 2020 for the L.A. Galaxy, Cristian Pavoncame via loan last season from Boca Juniors and has been a highlight reel week in and week out. The Galaxy on the other hand area trainwreck, get his jersey now, the chances he returns for 2021 are slim.

20. Jonathan dos Santos

Mexican national team players are very popular in MLS, Jonathan dos Santos has been a very decent player for the L.A. Galaxy, a hard worker, and a good passer, Dos Santos stepped out of his brother’s shadow and became a main piece in the Galaxy’s midfield.

19. Chris Wondolowski

The MLS all-time leading goal scorer, Chris Wondolowski, continues to light up the nets in MLS at the age of 37. Rumors have it that he will return for 2021, although not certain for San Jose, Wondo is a shining example that Goonies never say die.

One of the most underrated players in MLS the Scotsman Johnny Russell has been nothing short of gold for Sporting KC. He continued to be clutch in the 2020 season scoring 6 goals in 21 games.

The MLS 2020 golden boot, Diego Rossi, had a breakout year for LAFC, although Rossi has gotten better in each of his three MLS seasons. Not only did he win the golden boot, but he finally got his long-awaited call up to the Uruguayan national team. The Peruvian international, Edison Flores, was supposed to take D.C. United to new heights but he along with D.C. had a poor 2020 season. Flores was injured and could only play 13 games and provide 3 assists. Flores will look to have a better 2021.

The Uruguayan midfielder is one of the best players in Sounders history and quite frankly one of the best number 10’s in MLS history. The two-time MLS Cup champion looks to win his third with the Sounders this season.

The high priced Mexican international did not disappoint in his first MLS season for Sporting KC. Alan Pulido scored 6 goals in 12 games and with one season under his belt, he will be one of the most entertaining players to watch in 2021.

Mr. Portland Timbers, Diego Chara has been with the team since 2011, the strong and fun defensive midfielder is the heart and soul of the Timbers. At 34 he has proven very resilient to the tough grinds of MLS being one of the team fanfavorite players for well over 8 seasons.

12. Alejandro Bedoya

The Philadelphia Union captain and 2014 World Cup veteran for the USMNT, Alejandro Bedoya has been a vocal leader in Philadelphia, not only on the field but off the field. He was one of the first MLS players to speak out about social issues in the U.S. and has turned into one of the Union’s all-time best players.

11. Diego Valeri

7. Nani

The former Manchester United midfielder, Nani, has reshaped Orlando City, helping them get to their first-ever MLS Cup playoffs. Nani has been a leader for Orlando City and has been extremely fun to watch this season with spectacular goals and assists.

El Pipita comes with a pedigree few have in MLS, the Argentine international and former Juventus and Real Madrid striker is the league’s highest-paid player. A lot of expectations were put on Jordan Morris over the years and while he has lived up to them, the on again off again USMNT player has always been a contributor for the Seattle Sounders.

3. Josef Martinez

The most lethal target man in MLS, Josef Martinez has badly missed this season by Atlanta United, who had a dreadful 2020. Martinez will be back in 2021 and the man who scored 72 goals in 81 matches will be putting all MLS goalkeepers on alert!

2. Javier Hernandez

Well, at least Chicharito Javier Hernandez is selling jerseys, cause he hasn’t done much else in his very disappointing first MLS Season. The LA Galaxy were a mess this season and Chicharito was equally as bad, scoring 2 goals in 12 outings. He will be back in 2021 and MLS hopes they can get that egg off their face.

1. Carlos Vela

The Mexican and LAFC super star is the top-selling jersey in all of Major League Soccer. Carlos Vela has been nothing short of MVP class in MLS with great goals and strong leadership. 2020 was not LAFC’s nor Vela’s best but , in 2021 he might finally be able to lead the team to their first MLS cup.

After LAFC coach Bob Bradley and General Manager John Thorrington spent time in Uruguay scouting players, Rossi came under their radar and immediately pushed to sign the young Uruguayan international. He was sold to LAFC at a reported $3 million transfer fee and was set to become Carlos Vela’s go-to wingman up front.

When Vela did not participate in the MLS is Back tournament for personal reasons, Rossi put the team on his back and shined like no other player on the roster. While Uruguay head coach, Óscar Tabárez, is heavy on patience and process, Rossi has been in the mix since he was 13, he has played on every Uruguayan National Team youth team, where he scored 28 goals from 82 matches, before his recent first call-up for 2022 World Cup Qualifying.

Tabárez is not known for giving first call-ups minutes immediately, but clearly, he is on the radar and is a part of the coaches youth movement plans to find adequate replacements for Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani for the 2022 World Cup. Rossi’sstock is rising, and it looks like he will be a feature for the national team in the months to come.
