According to a tweet by MLB.com’s Jon Morosi, the New York Yankees and DJ LeMahieu are pretty close to signing a new contract and it would be just a matter of hours before it’s made official:

“Source: DJ LeMahieu is finalizing an agreement to return to the #Yankees. The deal could be completed as soon as today,” Morosi said on Twitter.

DJ LeMahieu Could Get $92 Million Over Four Years

Morosi didn’t get into the terms of the contract, but MLB Network’s Jon Heyman recently said in an interview that he’s likely to get the same kind of deal Josh Donaldson signed with the Minnesota Twins:

“I’ve heard four years and close to $20 million [per year that the Yankees are] offering at this point (…) We understand he’s looking for a five-year deal and the word was he was looking for well over $20 million, probably close to $25 million a year (…) There seems to be compromising room in there. Somewhere around that Josh Donaldson deal– four years for $92 million. I think that should get it done,” Heyman reported.

Obviously, signing a 32-year-old player is a risk, and the Yankees haven’t had that much luck with their big contracts lately except for Gerrit Cole. Then again, they just can’t afford to lose their best player from the past two seasons.

The reigning AL Batting Champion was an MVP candidate during the shortened campaign and is looking for a 5-year, $110 million deal, with the Bronx Bombers reportedly willing to offer him 4 years and $24 million less.

That’s why, out of pure frustration, LeMahieu has reportedly reached out to his agent to re-engage with talks with all the other teams around MLB interested in paying what he’s worth in today’s market.

The Mets traded both of their middle infielders — Andres Gimenez and Amed Rosario — to Cleveland in the blockbuster deal with the Indians,” the report said.

It’s well known that the Mets also want to sign George Springer. Then again, LeMahieu would be a better positional fit and could cost them around $60 million less, which is huge considering they’re looking to stay under the luxury tax threshold:

“LeMahieu won’t be cheap, but he’ll be a lot cheaper than Springer! Fewer years, less money, and exactly in line with Cohen’s desire to bring a World Series to Queens within the next 3-5 years. LeMahieu’s likely looking at a four-year deal right now, but he’s vying for that fifth year. The Mets swooping in here to give him a five-year, $110 million deal really isn’t all that crazy,” it concluded.

Whether it’s LeMahieu or Springer, the Mets are likely going to have to make a couple of trades to clear some cap space, but according to the report, staying in New York City would be a priority for DJ, regardless of if he’s playing at Queens or in the Bronx.

LeMahieu has been the best player in the New York Yankees over the past couple of seasons and he’s reportedly eager to come back next season. The team, however, is unwilling to meet his terms and asking price.

“The 32-year-old LeMahieu has, therefore, asked his representatives to re-engage with teams that have previously shown the most interest, the source said, among them the Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets, and to reconnect with teams that reached out early in the free agent period, including the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox and others,” it concluded.

Perhaps LeMahieu is just trying to push the Yankees and will use the Red Sox and the other teams as leverage to get the deal he wants – and deserves. Perhaps, his time in the Bronx has already come to an end. Whatever the case may be, the Yankees are making a huge mistake by lowballing him, even if he’s already 32.

And, according to CBS Sports and MLB.com’s Jon Morosi, the Los Angeles Dodgers are still pretty interested in entering his sweepstakes and will meet with him pretty soon to start negotiations.

LeMahieu would be a massive upgrade for the reigning World Series winners’ infield, especially if Enrique Hernández ends up leaving as expected and/or they don’t retain free agent Justin Turner.

Needless to say, the Dodgers have the means to meet LeMahieu’s reported nine-figure asking price,” read the report.

The 32-year-old star is reportedly looking to sign a 5-year deal worth north of $100 million, while the New York Yankees are only willing to give up 4 years, reportedly due to concerns about his age.

But, should LeMahieu decide to move on from the Bronx Bombers and look at all his options, the Dodgers would definitely be an interesting choice, while the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets could also enter the race for his services.

That’s why, according to Dodgers insider David Vassegh, the Los Angeles Dodgers will look to sign free-agent DJ LeMahieu to try and ‘counter’ the moves recently made by their revamped divisional rival.

It’s worth noting that DJ LeMahieu is reportedly interested in going back to the New York Yankees. Nonetheless, both sides have been far apart in terms of reaching an agreement for a new deal.

LeMahieu reportedly wants to sign a 5-year,$100 million contract, while the Yankees are wary about giving such a long-term contract to an aging player. Now, the Dodgers might swoop in and win his sweepstakes.

Adding LeMahieu to an already overpowered team would certainly do wonders for the reigning World Series champions, as they also feature one of the best pitching rotations in Major League Baseball.

“If Bauer goes for the longest contract worth the most money, then the Dodgers are probably out. But if Bauer truly would consider a short-term deal as he has said he would, especially if he would do a one-year pact (…) Bauer would join Buehler and Clayton Kershaw atop the rotation with David Price and talented youngsters Tony Gonsolin, Dustin May and Julio Urias behind them. Think of the depth and overflow to the bullpen in 2021,” read the report.

But if that wasn’t enough, Sherman added that the Dodgers could also end up winning the DJ LeMahieu sweepstakes, as the reigning AL Batting Champion and the New York Yankees are reportedly far from an agreement:

“The Dodgers have managed their payroll so well that Betts is their only guaranteed money beyond 2022, and his deferrals mean he costs just $25.55 million annually toward the payroll for luxury-tax purposes. Obviously, the Dodgers will have other commitments coming plus what pause is given since LeMahieu turns 33 in July? Still. LeMahieu can fit within the Dodger salary structure and play third if Justin Turner is not re-signed, or second with Gavin Lux becoming a super-utility type, or move around as he did with the Yankees,” he concluded.
