It was a very emotional moment for German considering his uncle passed away on Monday. He took the mound at the Coliseum and only required 99 pitches to achieve the feat in a Yankees’ 11-0 victory over the A’s.

Now, Domingo German is the first pitcher from the Dominican Republic to ever throw a perfect game and, of course, he joins a very exclusive club in MLB history. One of the most impressive records in sports.

Domingo German threw the first perfect game in MLB since 2012 and his gem on the mound is the 24th overall. The list of pitchers in the record books who have done it is just stellar.

Nobody expected a performance of this level by German considering he allowed 10 runs in his last start against the Seattle Mariners. Now, the Yankees are the team with most perfect games thrown in MLB history (4).

Considering his stats and his career, you’d think that Yankees manager Aaron Boone should and would easily lean towards adding Domingo German to the team’s roster. Then again, the manager is still undecided about that final roster spot.

Boone has repeatedly stated that he sees both German and standout prospect Deivi Garcia as starting pitchers. That’s why, come April 1 and Opening Day, he’s going to have to choose between one or the other.

Aaron Boone Sees Both Deivi Garcia And Domingo German As Starters, Is Still Undecided On Opening Day Roster

“Aaron Boone says that he sees both Dominican pitchers – Deivi Garcia and Domingo German – as starters, which probably means that just one of them will be on the roster come Opening Day #Yankees,” ESPN’s Marly Rivera reported.

Thus far, Garcia’s numbers during Spring Training have been pretty decent. He’s logged a 3.86 ERA over five starts and 14.0 IP while striking out 14 hitters, and there’s clearly a lot of upside with him.

German, on the other hand, continues to be flawless since serving his year-long suspension for domestic violence. He’s tossed 9 scoreless innings over three starts, striking out 13 out of the 31 hitters he’s faced.

Gerrit Cole, Corey Kluber, Jameson Taillon, and Jordan Montgomery have already locked their spot in the team’s rotation thus far and right now, it seems like Boone couldn’t go wrong with either German or Garcia for that fifth and last spot. For the first time in years, the Yankees seem to have a somewhat solid rotation, which has been their Achilles heel in their pursuit of another World Series.

Germán made the team’s rotation amid countless injuries and was one of the most pleasant surprises of the year. The Dominican posted an 18-4 record in 27 games (24 starts) with a 4.03 ERA, 1.147 WHIP, 153 strikeouts, and 4.72 FIP on 143.0 innings of work.

And right when he looked poised to have a huge role in the postseason, he was suspended 81 games for reportedly shoving his girlfriend right in the middle of a gala with MLB executives in attendance.

So, now that his suspension is coming to an end, several Yankees fans hoped that they could have the 26-year-old in the mound in time for the playoffs, especially after he posted a video working out with the caption “It isn’tover ’til its over”, quoting the great Yogi Berra.

Aaron Boone Says Domingo Germán Won’t Play In 2020

That’s why Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone was quick to shut that story out right away, saying that there’s just no way that Domingo Germán will play for them this season because they didn’t have enough time to ramp him up:

“No, no!Because, obviously, he hasn’t gotten to work out with us or throw with us,” Boone said. “So to be able to ramp him up and put him in this kind of situation, I don’t think it’s really fair to anyone.We look forward to Domingo being hopefully a really significant part of our team again heading into next year,” the manager concluded.

Even so, the Yankees have a strong rotation of Gerrit Cole, Masahiro Tanaka, JA Happ, Jordan Montgomery, and even Deivi García, so they should be just fine for the playoffs even without Germán.
