Ecuador dealing with multiple absentees

While Valencia is perhaps the biggest loss for this window, Ecuador will have to deal with other notable absences. Goalkeeper Moises Ramirez has also been ruled out due to injury, just like Brighton star Pervis Estupiñan.

Jhoanner Sanchez, who was expected to replace the left-back, also picked up an injury while playing for Independiente del Valle during the weekend. Sanchez Bas still had time to fill in these gaps, but it’s still a huge blow.

Valencia’s spot was taken by Inter Miami striker Leonardo Campana, whose form with the Herons has increased since the arrival of Lionel Messi. Ecuador will visit Venezuela on Thursday, Nov. 16, before they host Chile on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

Ecuador have little margin for error

Following a group stage exit at Qatar 2022, Ecuador started their path towards 2026 with positive results. However, the three-point deduction they suffered due to the Byron Castillo case will force them to make a bigger effort throughout the tournament.

Ecuador should have 7 points by now, but the sanction sees them in sixth place with just four points. Let’s keep in mind that the top six teams on the table qualify for the next World Cup, while the 7th-seeded country plays the inter-continental playoff.

Then, Enner Valenciascored the 1-1(49′) and Ecuador went all-in. Gonzalo Plata put a wonderful shot on the post (59′) in what would have been one of the most beautiful goals in the World Cup.

In October 6, 2016, Ecuador picked up a comfortable home win over then reigning Copa America champions Chile in a World Cup qualifier. The result, however, was overshadowed by a bizarresituation happening off the field.

After 82 minutes, Enner Valencia was carted off on a stretcher after laying down on the field. Just when he was loaded onto the medical cart, the police started to chase the vehicle before Valencia was loaded into an ambulance.

It was revealed that the police had a warrant to arrest Valencia for unpaid child support expenses, and had already tried to detain him when the team arrived at the stadium. The striker apparentlyknew about this and staged this exit to avoid the arrest.

Shortly after the game, thewarrant wasrevoked and Valencia later told his side of the story. In a statement released on social media, the Ecuadorian striker said he was given custody of his daughter in December 2015as his ex-wife spent the child maintenance expenses for personal use.

That meant he no longer had to pay the $4,820 monthly fee. Still, Valencia said that his ex-wife had “suspiciously” managed to reactivatethose payments, which resulted in the aforementioned warrant for his arrest. Valencia added that the situation was resolved by giving one of his properties to cover the alleged unpaid fees and a $10,000 check.
