Anticipation builds around the clash between Argentina and Spain, but March 27 arrives without the Finalissima. What’s really behind the unexpected absence of this global showdown?
The 2026 Finalissima between Argentina and Spain is not being played today because the match was officially cancelled after UEFA and CONMEBOL failed to secure a viable venue and agreement for the fixture.

The showdown between the national soccer teams had originally been scheduled for March 27 at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, but that plan collapsed due to security concerns linked to the geopolitical situation in the Middle East.

What followed was weeks of failed negotiations to relocate the match. UEFA explored multiple alternatives, including hosting the game in Madrid or moving it to neutral venues, but none of the proposals were accepted by all parties.

When will the 2026 Finalissima be played?

There is no scheduled date for the 2026 Finalissima between Argentina and Spain, as the match was officially cancelled after UEFA and CONMEBOL failed to reach an agreement on a venue and calendar window.

Lionel Messi and his teammates of Argentina during an International Friendly match in 2025 (Source: Carmen Mandato/Getty Images)

The anticipated clash was initially expected to take place around March 27, 2026, but that plan ultimately collapsed due to logistical and security complications linked to the chosen hosting scenario in Qatar.

In the weeks leading up to the intended date, multiple alternatives were discussed — including moving the match to Europe or South America, or even staging a two-leg format — but none of the proposals received unanimous approval from all involved federations.

The organizations explored several venues, yet disagreements over location, timing and competition scheduling prevented any final agreement from being reached. As a result, UEFA formally confirmed the cancellation of the 2026 edition of the Finalissima.

With both teams now focused on their respective World Cup preparations, any possibility of rescheduling the Argentina vs Spain showdown will depend entirely on future coordination between the governing bodies.

Who was the last winner of the Finalissima?

Argentina were the last winners of the Finalissima, beating Italy 3-0 in the 2022 edition at Wembley Stadium. Led by Lionel Messi, the team lifted the trophy after a commanding performance in a match that brought back the historic intercontinental showdown between Europe and South America.

Lionel Messi of Argentina lifts the Finalissima trophy in 2022 (Source: Claudio Villa/Getty Images)

Played in London, the 2022 Finalissima marked the revival of the competition after more than two decades, replacing the old Artemio Franchi Cup format. Argentina controlled the tempo from the start and were clinical in front of goal, with Lautaro Martinez opening the scoring before Angel Di Maria and Paulo Dybala sealed the result.

That victory became a key milestone in their modern golden era, arriving just months before their 2022 World Cup triumph. Since then, the Finalissima has remained a symbolic clash between continental champions, with the 2022 edition still standing as the most recent reference point in the competition’s history.

Conmebol president Alejandro Dominguez firmly declared Argentina the Finalissima champions, arguing that Spain failed to show up for the canceled match.
The canceled Finalissima between Argentina and Spain has sparked controversy after Conmebol president Alejandro Dominguez firmly declared Argentina as the rightful champions, arguing that Spain failed to appear for the match. His remarks came amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the high-profile clash.

“We are two-time Finalissima champions. They didn’t show up,” Dominguez said when asked about the situation following the 2026 Finalissima canceled, responding sharply to a journalist who described the outcome as unfortunate.

The exchange grew more pointed when the reporter suggested it would have been valuable to see the champions of Conmebol and UEFA face off. Dominguez challenged the premise before doubling down on his stance, reinforcing the narrative that Argentina’s title status remains intact despite the match never being played.

Finalissima cancellation adds tension between CONMEBOL and UEFA

The Finalissima was originally scheduled to take place at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, but regional conflicts forced organizers to reconsider both the venue and timing. Conmebol later revealed that Argentina proposed moving the match to March 31 in Italy, but UEFA considered the date unsuitable, effectively halting plans.

Lionel Messi of Argentina celebrates after scoring a goal.

While uncertainty continues around a possible rescheduling, Spain has already adjusted its calendar, confirming an alternative fixture. Dominguez’s comments, however, have intensified debate, as Argentina’s claim to being recognized as two-time Finalissima champions hinges on a match that was never played. With no resolution in place, the situation leaves both sporting and political implications unresolved heading into 2026.

According to reports, Lionel Messi’s Argentina have arranged a friendly against Honduras to replace the date originally set for the Finalissima.
Following the cancellation of the 2026 Finalissima, Lionel Messi’s Argentina have moved quickly to reorganize their March international window. Insider Esteban Edul reports that the World Champions have secured a friendly against Honduras for Friday, March 27, effectively filling the date originally reserved for the clash with Spain.

This latest development means Argentina have successfully scheduled two friendlies for the March international window, both set to take place at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires. The world champions are slated to face Honduras followed by a clash with Guatemala on March 31.

While FIFA has already granted a special exception for Guatemala to play across two continents in a single window, Argentina are now awaiting similar clearance for the other fixture. The logistical conflict arises because Honduras are already scheduled to face Peru in Spain, on March 31, and they must receive a formal travel waiver to fly from Buenos Aires to Madrid within that four-day span.

Argentina to face lower-level opponents again

The cancellation of the 2026 Finalissima cost Argentina a massive opportunity to test themselves against Spain, the current World No. 1 and a primary contender for the upcoming 2026 World Cup title.

Lamine Yamal of Spain. (Getty Images)

Without that marquee matchup, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) was forced to scramble for last-minute replacements to ensure the squad remained active during the March international window. However, because most elite nations had already finalized their schedules months in advance, Argentina have once again had to settle for lower-level opponents.

This has sparked a recurring wave of criticism within the country, as many feel the national team is consistently facing inferior competition during key FIFA dates. This trend was evident in late 2025 when the team faced Angola, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela, and as far back as early 2024 during a stretch of matches against El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Ecuador.

FIFA is reportedly set to make a regulatory exception for Lionel Messi and Argentina, allowing the world champions to face Guatemala in a friendly following the official cancellation of the 2026 Finalissima.
Following the official cancellation of the 2026 Finalissima against Spain, Lionel Messi‘s Argentina have confirmed a friendly against Guatemala on March 31 in Buenos Aires. While the match initially faced a potential suspension due to a specific FIFA regulation, Argentine journalist Esteban Edul reports that the governing body has granted an exception to allow the fixture to proceed.

The conflict stems from a FIFA rule that prohibits a national team from competing on two different continents during a single international window. Guatemala were in technical violation of this rule, as they are already scheduled to face Algeria on Friday, March 27, at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa, Italy.

Despite the logistical hurdle of traveling from Europe to South America in just four days, Guatemala are reportedly fully committed to making the trip to face the defending World Champions at La Bombonera, which is the confirmed venue.

Argentina reportedly working on another friendly

Following the sudden cancellation of the Finalissima, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) is working to ensure Lionel Messi and the national team maintain their competitive rhythm. While the friendly against Guatemala has been confirmed for, reports indicate that a second fixture is also in the works.

According to ESPN insider Martin Arevalo, the AFA is finalizing a second friendly match scheduled for Friday, March 27. Although the opponent and venue for this earlier fixture have not yet been disclosed, the goal is to provide the squad with maximum preparation time in Argentina before they depart for the 2026 World Cup in North America.

Following the cancellation of the Finalissima against Spain, Lionel Messi’s Argentina have arranged a friendly match against Guatemala.
After the cancellation of the 2026 Finalissima against Spain, Lionel Messi’s Argentina quickly moved to secure a friendly during the March international window. In that regard, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed that Guatemala will be the national team’s next opponent.

“Following the cancellation of the Finalissima, Lionel Scaloni’s squad will travel to the country to undergo a week of intense collective training and play a friendly match on Tuesday, the 31st, against Guatemala. The work schedule, the call-up list for this FIFA window, and the stadium will be announced in the coming days,” the AFA stated in an official release.

In the next few days, Scaloni will announce the final roster of players who will join training next week for the last FIFA window prior to the World Cup. This will be the coach’s final opportunity to evaluate the players before finalizing the 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Who could make it to the final roster?

Regarding the roster, the coach is expected to consider the players he has consistently called up recently, though some surprises—such as Joaquin Panichelli of Racing Strasbourg—could earn a spot.

Lionel Messi during a game vs Guatemala in 2024. (Getty Images)

One of the primary uncertainties remains the presence of Lautaro Martinez, as the Inter Milan forward continues to recover from a strain to the soleus muscle in his left calf.

Not a new opponent for Messi

This Central American side is a familiar opponent for Argentina, as this will mark their fourth head-to-head meeting. Guatemala notably served as the first opponent of the Lionel Scaloni era back in 2018, when the manager debuted with a convincing 3–0 victory—a match played without Messi on the pitch.

However, the captain has faced Guatemala on other occasions with clinical results. Prior to the 2014 World Cup, Argentina defeated them 4–0, highlighted by a Messi hat-trick. He was also a key figure in their most recent encounter in June 2024, where the Albiceleste secured another 4–1 win with a brace from Leo.

“The Spanish national team will host Serbia in an international friendly next Friday, March 27, at 9:00 PM local time,” the federation announced on its official website. The high-profile clash is set for Villarreal’s Estadio de la Ceramica, serving as a replacement for the scrapped Doha-based fixture.

With Spain entering the final stages of preparation for the 2026 World Cup, Luis de la Fuente will use the Balkan test to begin finalizing his 26-man roster.

While Argentina have yet to officially lock in a replacement for the March 27 date, rumors emerged regarding advanced talks for a pre-World Cup friendly.

Dani Carvajal targets international return

After a grueling recovery from a major knee injury sustained last year, Dani Carvajal appears poised to rejoin the national setup for the March double-header.

Having successfully integrated back into the Real Madrid rotation this winter, Carvajal is a lock for the call-up alongside fellow Merengue star Gonzalo Garcia.

Finalissima hopes fade as cancellation becomes permanent

Despite late attempts by the AFA to postpone the 2026 Finalissima to a later window, UEFA confirmed Sunday that the fixture has been officially scrapped. Disagreements over neutral venues in Europe and Argentina’s rejection of multiple alternative dates ultimately ended the possibility of the clash.

Four years after Argentina’s dominant victory over Italy in the inaugural edition, the intercontinental trophy will go unawarded this cycle.

The 2026 Finalissima between Argentina and Spain got canceled, which reportedly created an unhappy reaction from Lionel Messi.
According to Michelle Kaufman of the Miami Herald, “Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi was disappointed to learn of the cancellation of the Finalissima match between Argentina and Spain.” Now, the Argentinian ace won’t be able to play for another trophy.

Messi and Argentina won the last Finalissima 3-0 against Italy. However, they won’t be able to defend their crown since the Finalissima was canceled after not getting into an agreement of relocation.

Argentina are the Copa America champions, while Spain won the last Euros. It was a must-watch game, but now, all people must feel like Messi, sad and disappointed that the game won’t happen.

Argentina are trying to revalidate another crown too

The 2026 World Cup will have the Argentinians defending their crown at the biggest stage of them all. That’s the main focus of the team. After all, these are the last gasps of air of the generation that won the 2022 World Cup.

Rodrigo De Paul of Argentina

Guys like Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, Emiliano Martinez, and many others are veterans who aren’t likely to get to the 2030 edition of the tournament. Hence, it’s now or never for Argentina. That was the compelling factor of the Finalissima. Spain, on the other hand, are full of young players.

Argentina are still a powerhouse

Argentina have won two Copa America in a row and one World Cup. They also got to the 2014 World Cup final. However, since 2014, they’ve gotten to every tournament’s final except for the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Copa America. They lost the first three finals, but they’ve won every final ever since.

After the 2026 Finalissima against Argentina got canceled, Spain are reportedly setting up friendlies.
After the news that the 2026 Finalissima between Spain and Argentina was canceled, the European champions are not resting on their laurels, instead, they are reportedly setting up friendlies.

According to Argentine outlet Doble Amarilla, Spain will play two home friendlies against Serbia and Egypt. Hence, Luis de la Fuente’s men will stay active. Serbia might be a tough team to face, while Egypt are a bit more manageable. Still, Spain should win both games, especially being at home.

The Spanish national team has won 12 out of its last 15 games, with two ties and one loss that came against Portugal. Since no Finalissima will be played, Spain’s focus will now shift into the World Cup, where they headline Group H against Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay.

What will Argentina do?

Doble Amarilla also reported that Argentina’s manager, Lionel Scaloni, will still call up all the players to travel to Argentina and work on an “XXL camp” in their sporting center in Ezeiza.

Lionel Scaloni, Head Coach of Argentina

Still, Argentina will try to seek help from CONMEBOL to at least sign one friendly. However, the world champions understand it’s a race against time at this moment. It will remain to be seen what happens with them, but news will come eventually.

Finalissima’s history so far

The Finalissima was previously known as the European/South American Nations Cup, or the Artemio Franchi Cup. It happened twice in 1985 and 1993. Then the concept was discontinued until 2022, where CONMEBOL and UEFA signed a memorandum.

Winners of the Finalissima have one name above others, and that’s Argentina. However, they won’t get the chance to get the third one due to the cancelation, even if Argentina wanted to change the date.

The 2026 Finalissima, which was set to feature Spain representing UEFA and Argentina representing CONMEBOL, has been canceled.
Conmebol released a statement regarding the cancelation of the 2026 Finalissima, revealing that Argentina had agreed to play Spain in Italy as long as the date was postponed to March 31.

“Unfortunately, UEFA stated that holding the match on March 31—only four days after the original proposed date—was not possible, resulting in the cancellation of the Finalissima,” the Conmebol statement read.

In a statement, UEFA acknowledged Argentina‘s request to play on March 31, but deemed the date “unworkable.”

The original plan for the 2026 Finalissima

The original scheduled date for the 2026 Finalissima was March 27 at Lusail Stadium in Qatar. However, due to the geopolitical situation affecting the region, UEFA and Conmebol worked to find an alternative venue.

Comunicado: La Finalissima entre Argentina y España queda cancelada.
— CONMEBOL.com (@CONMEBOL) March 15, 2026

Both governing bodies thanked Qatar for its effort to host the match and claimed that they worked together to find a solution, but failed to reach an agreement on the alternative venue or date.

The other options that were on the table for Argentina vs. Spain

Argentina rejected UEFA’s proposal to play on March 27 at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, feeling that such scenario would benefit Spain, who would be playing on home soil.

UEFA expressed disappointment in a statement, revealing it guaranteed Argentina a 50:50 split of supporters to ensure neutrality. It also offered to split the Finalissima over two legs, an option allegedly rejected by Argentina as well.

Argentina vs. Spain Finalissima might not take place in 2026

The Finalissima could reportedly be rescheduled, but there are not many available dates in 2026.

The Spanish national team has Nations League fixtures in September and October, which is why UEFA ruled out Argentina’s petition to play the Finalissima after the World Cup.

This situation practically leaves no room for a Finalissima before the 2026 World Cup. It remains to be seen whether Spain and Argentina remain interested in playing this match after the big tournament.

UEFA released a statement confirming that the 2026 Finalissima between Spain and Argentina has been canceled, lamenting that the game couldn't take place in Qatar or at an alternative venue.
UEFA has confirmed that the 2026 Finalissima between Spain and Argentina will ultimately not take place on March 27 as originally scheduled.

The European governing body released a statement lamenting that the circumstances didn’t allow the match to take place in Qatar, which was the initial plan.

“It is a source of great disappointment to UEFA and the organizers that circumstances and timing have denied the teams of the chance to compete for this prestigious prize in Qatar – a country that has demonstrated time and again its capability of staging world class international events in state-of-the-art facilities,” the statement read.

UEFA claims Argentina rejected its proposals

UEFA also made it clear that it had every intention to move the Finalissima to another venue, but claimed that Argentina didn’t accept any of its proposals.

It is with great disappointment that we confirm the cancellation of the 2026 Finalissima, due to circumstances and scheduling constraints that made the match impossible to reschedule.

👇Read more here: https://t.co/NWDLNDJnpw
— UEFA (@UEFA) March 15, 2026

“With strong determination to save the important fixture, and despite the understandable difficulties of relocating a match of such importance at extremely short notice, UEFA explored other feasible alternatives but each ultimately proved unacceptable to the Argentinian Football Association,” the UEFA statement added.

The original 2026 Finalissima plan

The Finalissima, which pits the defending UEFA Euro champions against the reigning Copa America winners, was reintroduced in 2022 with Argentina beating Italy 3-0 at Wembley.

The team led by Lionel Messi repeated its Copa America title in 2024, which is why it was set to face Spain, who lifted the European Championship that same year.

Lusail Stadium in Qatar, home to the 2022 World Cup final, was set to host the big match before the geopolitical situation affecting the country forced UEFA and Conmebol to explore alternatives.

The options proposed by UEFA and rejected by Argentina

According to UEFA, multiple options were proposed but rejected by Argentina. The first one was to play the Finalissima at the Santiago Bernabeu on the original date, with a 50:50 split of supporters. Still, Argentina felt that Spain would feel like the home team in such scenario.

The second option proposed by UEFA and rejected by Argentina, according to the statement, was to play the Finalissima over two legs – one at the Santiago Bernabeu on 27 March and the other in Buenos Aires during an international window before the UEFA EURO and Copa America 2028, “again offering a supporter split of 50:50 for the match in Madrid.”

UEFA added that it “sought a commitment from Argentina that, if a neutral venue in Europe could be found, the game could go ahead on 27 March, as planned and announced on 18 December 2025, or on the alternative date of 30 March. This proposal was also rejected.“

The alternative ideas from Argentina rejected by UEFA

The European governing body admitted that Argentina also had proposals, first countering with an idea to play the Finalissima after the 2026 World Cup. However, UEFA ruled it out, claiming that Spain have no available dates.

UEFA also considered “unworkable” to play on March 31, with Argentina allegedly declaring their availability to play “exclusively” on that date.

The Finalissima between Spain and Argentina can reportedly be rescheduled, though now it seems to be too soon to tell when this match could finally take place.

The Finalissima, which was set to feature Spain and Argentina, has ultimately been canceled.
After much back-and-forth, numerous meetings, and proposals, the Finalissima between the Argentina and Spain has been canceled. The question many are now asking is: will this important match be played at another date?

According to Argentine outlet Doble Amarilla, a rescheduling is in consideration, though there are no hypothetic dates or venues on the table yet.

The option of staging it before the 2026 FIFA World Cup is now ruled out, since March was the opportunity to do that.

2026 might be off the table for the Finalissima

However, Spain cannot play the Finalissima in the first international breaks after the World Cup either, as the reigning UEFA Euro champions have Nations League games both in September and October.

Lionel Messi of Argentina and Lamine Yamal of Spain.

Therefore, a rescheduling within 2026 seems unlikely. And we’ll have to wait and see whether the teams remain interested in facing each other in 2027.

Why isn’t the Finalissima being played?

Originally, the match between Argentina and Spain was scheduled to take place in Qatar at Lusail Stadium, but well-known conflicts in the region led authorities to decide to change both the venue and the date.

Conmebol revealed that Argentina wanted to change the date for March 31, accepting Italy as the neutral venue, but UEFA considered that date “unworkable.”

With virtually no available dates on the FIFA calendar in 2026, combined with the fact that both UEFA (entity that expressed great disappointment) and Conmebol have been unable to agree on a venue, the match has been delayed so much that its eventual staging remains uncertain.
