Nussmeier spoke with NFL Network. “I’ve got a lot of stuff coming up. I’ve got the Jets coming in the next couple of days here. I’ve got the Rams coming into town. I’m heading out to Indianapolis.”

The Jets worked out Carson Beck and Drew Allar, as well as preparing to host Ty Simpson. Now, Nussmeier is up next. Nussmeier was at LSU and has been looking good in drills, so there is quite a chance he manages to impress the Jets too.

Is Nussmeier a good prospect?

Nussmeier has completed a 67.4% for 1,972 yards and 12 touchdowns to five interceptions. LSU lost four of its last five games with Nussmeier under center, and also scored 25 or less points in each of Nussmeier’s last five games.

Van Buren has played in five games this season, completing 64% of his passes for 647 yards, throwing four touchdowns and one interception in the process. In those five games, he has a 3-2 record.

Oklahoma has a 9-2 record, it’s a very good team and always a big program to face. The Sooners have a very good 827-yard receiver in Isaiah Sategnaand a prolific defense. While Oklahoma hasn’t scored much, the Sooners have the sixth-best defense in the whole nation.

The Sooners are fighting for seeding

If Ole Miss misses a step and Oklahoma wins, they could be getting better seeding for the CFB Playoff. However, LSU and Oklahoma are not precisely friendly towards each other, so LSU will definitely trying to ruin the Sooners’ options to go to the playoff.

Still, the urgency resides in Oklahoma’s side. And also, well the starting quarterback is out fo the Tigers, so it’s a tough scenario for LSU. Oklahoma will go all in to win this game, while LSU has not much to play for.

Unfortunately for LSU, it’s been confirmed that their biggest star won’t be available, as he’s still recovering from a lingering abdominal injury. Interim head coach Frank Wilson announced that quarterback Garrett Nussmeier has been ruled out for Saturday’s game.

Alarm bells went off days ago when news broke of Nussmeier’s knee injury, which sparked rumors of a serious setback. Fortunately for Tigers fans, the head coach quickly put those concerns to rest.

During a recent press conference, Kelly addressed the media, clarifying that while his starting signal-caller is dealing with an injury, it’s not as severe as had been rumored off the record.

“Just for the record, (Nussmeier) has tendinitis, patella tendinitis. He does not have a torn ACL. We have not amputated his leg,” he said. “He has a (pissed off) patella tendon. He was out there today throwing. Tomorrow, he’ll be back out, most likely in a practice situation. So, I thought we’d calm everybody down.

“On the scale of 1 to 10, this is like a 1.5, on the scale of 1 to 10. And that’s just being honest with you so we get the right information out there, you know, regarding Nuss. It’s not a serious injury. And, it’s like guys dealing with tendinitis virtually every day, in life – take two Aspirins and I’ll call you in the morning, right? This is more precautionary.”

Clarifying the injury situation

True to his style, Brian Kelly was energetic when addressing the situation with his starting QB. The coach wasn’t immune to the swirling rumors about the severity of the injury, but he made it clear that Nussmeier only aggravated a pre-existing injury.

“I think it just planted, you know, the wrong way. And, when you have something that is, you know, a pre-existing condition, you can piss it off real easy and that’s kind of what happened,” Kelly explained.

“It’s not torn. There’s no fraying. There’s none of that. This is pre-existing. And, he probably just planted the wrong way. There’s nothing really to see on film with it. But, it’s pissed it off. Aggravated it, would be the better way to put it for me, if you guys articulate for me. He aggravated it a little bit, but he’s good to go.”

A chronic issue for the QB

Years ago, Nussmeier underwent surgery with the medical team, and his coach believes that many of these setbacks are, in part, a result of what he went through back in 2023.

“A lot of that is due to his 2023 Osgood-Schlatter surgery that he had when the tendon was irritated back then,” Kelly said. “This is just chronic. (Pissed it off) a little bit and we’ll calm it down. I mean, it’s tendinitis, you know. Tendinitis is managed every single day around the world for all kinds of, you know, different ailments.

“But, no. I mean, he’ll be – like I said. Just like a bad ankle, that you’re going to come back in. He’ll be back out. He was throwing today and be back out tomorrow.”

Aaron Anderson enters the next season as one of Nussmeier’s top offensive options, despite dealing with a nagging injury. The receiver has been sidelined from practice due to inflammation in one of his knees, though his availability does not appear to be in jeopardy.

In fact, it was head coach Kelly himself who, during a recent media session at the start of this week’s practices, downplayed the situation. He offered some clarity on what former Alabama player is currently dealing with.

“I think today he felt really good,” the HC said. “We’re going to be very careful with him. This is the result of — he was great this summer in his training, never missed a day. Probably a little bit of too much work in that sense, where he had some inflammation in the knee. We took an MRI, bone scan. Everything looks really good.”

“Now it’s about just getting him back moving,” Kelly also added. “So he’ll do some agility and some movement tomorrow with the hope that Wednesday we’ve got him back out on the field.”

A new wave of hope begins for LSU

This will be Brian Kelly’s fourth year at the helm of this prestigious program, and interestingly, he has yet to start a season on the right foot. This time won’t be any easier, as LSU opens on the road against Clemson. Still, hope is the last thing to fade.

“We’ve addressed this in January,” Kelly told reporters. “We addressed it with the guys that we brought in. We addressed it in the way we trained our football team. We addressed it in spring ball, and then into our off season, and again, we’ve made it pretty known. You know what our goal is, and our goal is to go 1-0.

“If there’s anything that is slightly different from in years past, it’s that we are so much more intentional about getting to Aug. (30) in January, and that focus has remained the same for the last seven and a half months.”
