FIFA issued a statement alleging a concerted and ongoing effort by certain parties to undermine FIFA and its President Gianni Infantino, making it clear that it will not tolerate such actions.

“Echoing the recent statements of CONMEBOL and CAF, as well as discussions with FIFA Member Associations and Confederations from around the world, FIFA will not support, facilitate or tolerate any process concerning the election of the FIFA President that is inconsistent with FIFA’s Statutes, democratic procedures and established governance framework. The FIFA President was democratically elected by FIFA’s Member Associations and continues to serve with their mandate,” FIFA wrote in its statement.

“It is increasingly evident that there is a concerted and ongoing effort by some to undermine FIFA and its President. Those who do not have the support of FIFA’s Member Associations should not seek to achieve through allegation, insinuation or misinformation what they cannot achieve through FIFA’s established democratic processes.”

Tension between Infantino and the Confederations

Tension between Infantino and several confederations has increased in recent days. UEFA has openly questioned the FIFA president and cast doubt on his continuity, while CAF backed his candidacy for the 2027 election. CONMEBOL also spoke out in defense of FIFA’s established processes.

One of the main points of conflict was FIFA Forward Enterprise, a project through which Infantino sought to open the door to private investment in some of the governing body’s commercial rights. The proposal generated rejection among various federations and confederations and was ultimately withdrawn by FIFA, though differences between Infantino and his critics did not end with that decision.

“Recent reporting has included unsubstantiated assertions and demonstrably false claims concerning FIFA and its President. Speculation and insinuation should not be presented as fact, and repetition does not make an allegation true.

“The FIFA President has dedicated more than 30 years of his professional life to European and world football, contributing to significant change in the game and, in particular, to broadening access, resources and opportunity across world football. Change inevitably challenges established interests, but disagreement with that change cannot justify efforts to undermine the democratic mandate of FIFA’s President or the institution he was elected to lead.”

The Stance of UEFA and CAF

UEFA remains one of the main opposing factions against Infantino. The European confederation has stated that it lost confidence in the executive and demands guarantees that initiatives like FIFA Forward Enterprise will not be proposed again under similar conditions.

On the other side, CAF confirmed its backing for Infantino, and its 54 associations represent more than a quarter of FIFA’s 211 members. CONMEBOL also rejected any attempt to alter FIFA’s institutional structure outside of its democratic mechanisms.

“First, the proposals to sell off the major competitions had to be withdrawn and secondly, assurances have to be made that such attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never be made again.

“These conditions have not been met. In addition, UEFA made it abundantly clear in it’s statement on Saturday that it has lost confidence in Gianni Infantino’s presidency. That position holds. Yesterday’s announcement that some people employed by the FIFA President (and whose careers depend on his favour) agree with him changes nothing.”

UEFA is not the only one keeping the boycott

Per Martyn Ziegler of The Times, “Concacaf federations’ overwhelming response to Infantino’s statement is that they have lost confidence in the FIFA president.” Infantino’s time as FIFA’s president might be coming to a dramatic end.

While soccer is a business, this was seen as pure greed by Infantino. So much so, that he jeopardized one of the most treasured things in sports: transparency and fair play. Hence, he’s been left with little to no allies, and with huge opposition.

When does Infantino’s tenure end?

Gianni Infantino‘s current term as FIFA president will end in March 2027. At first it was believed that he was heavily endorsed to run for a fourth term.

However, if FIFA is getting boycotted strictly because of him, his future might be really cloudy. Without UEFA, FIFA loses most of the soccer juggernauts. Hence, FIFA is at a crossroads.

As FIFA’s President Gianni Infantino learned in 2026, having multiple countries co-host a World Cup comes with its fair share of pros and cons. Amid speculation that Infantino promised Morocco it would host the 2030 World Cup final, soccer’s governing body stepped in to clear the air with a firm statement.

“It is false and misleading to claim the FIFA President has made any promise in relation to hosting the FIFA World Cup 2030 Final,” FIFA’s statement read, according to reporter Ben Jacobs. “A decision will be made by FIFA in due course.”

The 2030 World Cup is already causing trouble

All in all, the 2026 World Cup was a success, and FIFA will repeat the formula four years from now. In 2030, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco will co-host soccer‘s biggest tournament.

In addition, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay are expected to host one—maybe more, maybe none at all—group-stage match each to commemorate the first-ever World Cup in 1930, which was hosted and won by Uruguay after defeating Argentina 4-2 in the final. Paraguay’s inclusion stems from its status as the headquarters of CONMEBOL, the only continental confederation in existence a century ago.

However, spreading matches across such a vast geographic area will create more headaches than relief for Infantino and FIFA. Among the three main co-hosts—Spain, Portugal, and Morocco—there is already friction, as each would like to host the final.

Morocco digs its heels in

According to Ben Jacobs of talkSPORT, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (RMFF) has acknowledged holding talks with Infantino about staging the final in Casablanca. Spain, meanwhile, wants the final to be played in Madrid—or any other city provided it’s in the Bull’s Skin.

Considering UEFA’s recent boycott threat toward FIFA, this could become another source of tension leading up to the tournament. It may all prove to be another challenge for Infantino and FIFA to navigate—and one that exceeds their reach.

Soccer’s governing body may have created a problem for itself by selecting those three nations to co-host the 2030 World Cup. Still, there is plenty of time before the tournament, and much can change before a final decision is made on where the 2030 World Cup final will be held.

In a strongly worded statement published on its official Instagram page, UEFA criticized Infantino’s failure to deliver on the promises he made when he was elected president, while also outlining the changes FIFA will need to face moving forward. “UEFA welcomes FIFA’s decision to withdraw its plan to sell a stake in its competitions, including the World Cup, into private hands,” the statement began.

“Of course we have to be transparent,” Infantino said at the time. “FIFA’s money is your money. It is not the money of the FIFA president.” UEFA strongly responded: “On both of these promises, he has failed to deliver.”

Despite believing it has won the first battle, UEFA still considers that this is only the beginning: “This is a victory for the whole game. But it must not be the end of the story. The proposal has gone. The task of rebuilding trust in FIFA has only just begun.”

What was Infantino’s proposal?

FIFA President Gianni Infantino proposed creating a new commercial entity, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), valued at $20 billion, to handle FIFA’s commercial and event operations, including the men’s and women’s World Cups. Under the plan, FIFA would sell a 20% minority stake to private equity investors—raising up to $4.2 billion—in exchange for a share of future profits.

Infantino argued the move would “democratize” football by allowing FIFA to double development funding to $20 million for each of its 211 member federations. However, after fierce opposition from UEFA and other regional bodies over the commercialization of the sport, Infantino ultimately withdrew the proposal.

The strong rejection

The proposal met fierce resistance from key football governing bodies, who argued that handing a stake in FIFA’s commercial rights to private investors would undermine the sport’s integrity and long-term control. Opposition grew rapidly as AFC joined UEFA and Concacaf in firmly rejecting the plan, presenting a united front that ultimately forced FIFA to shelve the project.

Infantino released a statement accepting the failure of his proposal to create a $20 billion commercial subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which was slated to manage the World Cup and other FIFA events.

“After listening carefully to all views, it has become clear that the project has generated divisions that, regardless of the level of support, no longer benefit the initial objective,” Infantino posted. “As we stated from the beginning, the intention was to carry it out only if it had the backing of the majority of FIFA member associations and always subject to a consultation process with them, the FIFA Council, the confederations, and other stakeholders,” the official added.

What Infantino’s proposed plan entailed

The FIFA Forward Enterprise project involved creating a subsidiary company that would house World Cup rights following the sale of a $4 billion stake to private investors.

The FIFA president urged the 221 national federations to approve the plan, promising multiplied funding in return. “Looking ahead, I intend to bring all stakeholders back together in the coming days and weeks, guided by our shared interest in our sport and to continue to drive the growth of soccer everywhere, especially in those countries that need our support the most,” Infantino added.

Pressure from confederations

UEFA stood as the primary opponent, even warning that its 55 member federations would not participate in FIFA-organized tournaments while the proposal remained in effect.

Subsequently, Concacaf and the AFC officially rejected the project—though they ruled out supporting a boycott—while CONMEBOL opted to request more information, stating that “Soccer always comes first” before taking a final stance.

“The AFC stands in solidarity with UEFA and CONCACAF in expressing serious concerns over FIFA’s proposal to introduce private investment into FIFA’s flagship competitions and the decision-making process around FFE,” the Asian Football Confederation stated through its official website.

The same continued: “The fact that the situation has reached the point where the real possibility of a FIFA World Cup boycott has entered public discourse should concern everyone who cares about the future of our game. Football should never have been placed in such a position.”

What is Gianni Infantino proposing?

Gianni Infantino sparked widespread controversy by proposing a $20 billion plan to sell a 20% stake in FIFA’s commercial operations and World Cup rights to private equity investors. More support for Concacaf

In an extraordinary meeting, the 41 member associations unanimously rejected the proposal to create FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), an initiative that involves bringing private investors into the commercial rights of the World Cup and other FIFA-organized tournaments.

Concacaf criticism of Gianni Infantino

Among the main concerns, the confederation stated that there was no proper review process, criticized the deadlines set by FIFA, and questioned the need to rely on private capital considering the multi-million-dollar revenue generated from the 2026 World Cup, which was listed as the most profitable in the organization’s history.

Additionally, Concacaf requested greater transparency in resource administration and asked to evaluate whether FIFA’s economic reserves could be used to strengthen soccer development without opening the door to outside investors.

UEFA also opposed FIFA’s plan

Concacaf’s decision comes just hours after UEFA expressed a similar stance. The European confederation warned that none of its federations will participate in tournaments organized by FIFA while this proposal remains in effect, increasing pressure on Gianni Infantino.

The FIFA Forward Enterprise project seeks to raise $4.2 billion through long-term investors, with a valuation close to $20 billion. However, resistance from two of the world’s primary confederations leaves the FIFA-backed initiative in an increasingly complex position.

Concacaf released a statement on the matter, where they assure they are “an organization founded on service, transparent governance, and the long-term stewardship of football.” Not only that, but the statement adds, “the membership expressed deep concerns about the lack of due process surrounding the proposal, the artificially short deadline imposed, and the absence of any review or approval by the relevant FIFA governance bodies.

In addition, the need for private equity investment to fund new and existing FIFA Forward programs following the most profitable FIFA World Cup in history was questioned. The discussion reinforced the need for greater transparency and proper governance.”

Concacaf revealed three clear conclusions

To end the statement, which pretty much aligns with UEFA, Concacaf members concluded with three main conclusions. All center towards transparency, and preserve the integrity of the game:

“- Rejected the proposal
– Tasked their FIFA Council Members with engaging FIFA to determine how existing FIFA reserves could be used to increase FIFA Forward funding for football development across our region; and
– Tasked their FIFA Council Members with instructing the FIFA President to ensure that any matter follows the proper governance processes via staff and FIFA Council, in accordance with the FIFA Statutes.”

Concacaf didn’t go as big as UEFA, but could

UEFA directly admitted that if the FIFA Forward Enterprise goes forward, the European entity would directly boycott tournaments. Concacaf didn’t go that far. But, if the issue at hand keeps going, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of the possibilities that Concacaf does the same.

Infantino has not made any fans with some of his decisions lately. In fact, UEFA already confirmed it will boycott FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup, if Infantino insists with a private investment proposal.

Al-Khelaifi has had similar roles in sports to FIFA president

The one roadblock for Al-Khelaifi

If Nasser Al-Khelaifi wants to contend to be FIFA’s president, he would have to resign from his PSG, Premier Padel, and beIN Media Group roles. This is because he would breach FIFA Governance Rules, which state the following:

• Conflict of Interest: FIFA’s strict Code of Ethics and governance regulations prohibit the president from holding active management or executive roles in professional clubs, leagues, or commercial media entities that deal with broadcasting rights.
  
• Full-Time Commitment: The role of FIFA president is a full-time position requiring absolute neutrality, meaning holding dual leadership in a major European club like PSG or a global broadcaster like beIN Sports creates an untenable conflict of interest.

UEFA is going after FIFA, mainly showing its discomfort with President Gianni Infantino’s controversial plan to transfer ownership interests in the World Cup and other tournaments to private investors. As long as this plan remains active, no UEFA national team will participate in FIFA tournaments.

At first read, many soccer fans believe this only puts the upcoming 2030 World Cup—and the qualifying process—in danger. In reality, however, the effects of the boycott can be seen right away.

U-20 Women’s World Cup is priority

The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup won’t only feature six UEFA teams (Poland, England, France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain), but it is also set to be hosted in a European country (Poland). That makes it the most complex situation for more reasons than one.

Not only is it the first World Cup on FIFA’s upcoming schedule, but because it is being hosted in Europe, if the boycott stands, soccer’s governing body will have to find a way to replace the European sides and come up with a new venue as well.

The curtain-raiser is set for Sept. 5, so the clock is ticking. The easiest solution would be for Infantino and FIFA to scrap their plan, but it remains to be seen whether they will give up so easily in this political tug-of-war with UEFA.

Other UEFA teams in FIFA 2026 tournaments

Moreover, there will be no shortage of UEFA national teams at the Men’s U-17 World Cup in Qatar (November-December). Greece, Denmark, France, Italy, Croatia, Belgium, Spain, Ireland, Serbia, and Romania have all qualified, but their status is now up in the air.

At the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco (October-November), UEFA’s representatives include Germany, Poland, Norway, France, and Spain. Just like the men’s teams in the same age group, their status remains on hold while UEFA’s boycott of FIFA competitions is in effect.

Lastly, although the Women’s World Cup is scheduled for 2027 in Brazil, the UEFA qualifiers have yet to be played. UEFA has 11 confirmed slots at the biggest tournament in women’s international soccer, with a potential 12th through the Intercontinental Play-Off. At the last Women’s World Cup in 2023, 12 UEFA teams qualified, and the final featured two European powerhouses, with Spain defeating England.

Determined not to let the trees hide the forest, Infantino took to social media with a congratulatory—some might say commiserative—message for the runners-up, who now turn their sights to the future and the 2030 World Cup, where Argentina’s starting XI may be without Messi.

“What an incredible FIFA World Cup for Argentina! Unforgettable comebacks and a fighting spirit inspired millions and gave football fans around the world moments they will never forget,” Infantino wrote on his Instagram account.

“Returning to the FIFA World Cup Final after lifting the trophy in 2022 is a testament to your lasting excellence. Thank you for helping make this World Cup so special and for competing with such passion until the end.”

Infantino’s message timing

Infantino’s message congratulating Argentina comes at an opportune moment. It arrived amid worldwide criticism aimed at the national team—which Alexis Mac Allister ironically thanked after the 2026 World Cup.

Meanwhile another household name on the team, Rodrigo De Paul, took aim at conspiracists after the final. Instead, Infantino shined a light on the things Argentina did right rather than focusing on the controversies, most of which extended beyond Messi and his fellow countrymen’s control.

Infantino’s message for Spain
