“We know it’s here (spark). I don’t know if it’s getting to know one another more now because it’s official games. I don’t know if it’s jitters. You know a little bit nervous. New season. I don’t know what it is. Sometimes you gotta shock the team, and this is what we are going through right now,” he revealed to the press.

“We had two games in our building that we were we definitely shocked. I feel like you know you kind of raise the the level of urgency for everybody. We have to be better. It starts with myself always. Anything I say, it’s I always start for myself. I have to be better. I have to set the tone. I have to be more urgent…”

Erik Spoelstra brought in several key players to his roster to compete toe-to-toe in the Eastern Conference. So far, the level of play and team chemistry he’s looking for have been nowhere to be found.

Giannis’ numbers in his first two games

Giannis Antetokounmpo hit the ground running individually in his first two regular-season games with the Miami Heat, even though the team stumbled to an 0-2 start. The Greek Freak dropped a total of 71 points across those two contests—scoring 35 points (13-for-19 FG, 6 rebounds) in his Heat debut against Minnesota and following it up with a monster 36-point, 12-rebound, 5-assist, and 2-steal double-double against Detroit.

Overall, he’s averaging 35.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists while shooting a blazing 62.2% from the field, proving that his transition to South Beach is off to a dominant start despite Miami’s early defensive struggles.

Starting the comeback in Charlotte

The Heat hit the road tonight, Saturday, October 24, to face the Charlotte Hornets at Spectrum Center. After that, they head back to South Florida for a marquee home game at Kaseya Center against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday, October 26, before traveling north to take on the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena on Wednesday, October 28.

Key takeaways

• Giannis Antetokounmpo took responsibility for the Miami Heat’s early season struggles.
• Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 71 points across his first two games with Miami.
• The Miami Heat face the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday, October 24.

Trading a player of Antetokounmpo’s stature and one under contract may make little sense, but the Bucks didn’t really have much of a choice. Although Giannis didn’t publicly request a trade, reports state he and his camp pressured Milwaukee to trade him away, and the Heat were always circling around him, waiting for the moment to pounce.

Much has been said over the years about Miami’s front office with Pat Riley’s refusal to go after NBA stars and complete blockbuster trades. At one point, he had enough. The Heat went nuclear, sending virtually every single chip they owned to the Bucks to acquire Antetokounmpo. The main reason why the Bucks were pressured to trade Anteokounmpo before the 2026-27 NBA season is because they would’ve been playing him on a contract year if not.

Giannis would’ve entered contract year

Signed to a three-year extension, Giannis’ deal runs through the 2027-28 campaign, but only if the Greek-Nigerian star says so. Next offseason, Antetokounmpo has a player option and could become an unrestricted free agent if he declines to exercise it.

That meant Milwaukee either traded him, or risked losing him to free agency. Based on everything the Bucks got in return for Giannis, it’s safe to say they made the right choice.

Giannis’ trade to the Heat

Antetokounmpo wasn’t sent to Miami on his own; he was joined by Bobby Portis, who was also traded by the Bucks to the Heat. In return, the Bucks received Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks (2026, 2031, and 2033), a pick swap in 2030, and a second-round pick in 2033, as reported by ESPN.

Key takeaways

• Giannis Antetokounmpo traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat before the 2026-27 season.
• Player option next offseason allows Antetokounmpo to become an unrestricted free agent by declining it.
• Bucks acquired four players plus four future draft selections and a 2030 pick swap.

Both Edwards and Antetokounmpo are expected to suit up for Minnesota and Miami, respectively. The exhibition should also offer critical rotational minutes for several young players eager to prove they belong in an NBA rotation.

While Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy recently addressed why his front office opted out of the offseason Giannis sweepstakes, the “Greek Freak” has remained focused on preparing for his Heat debut against the Timberwolves.

With Edwards entering the year primed to solidify his standing as the unquestioned face of the franchise, Minnesota enters the 2026-27 campaign looking to build on last year’s deep postseason run.

Predicted lineups for Heat and Timberwolves

With Edwards and Antetokounmpo anchoring their respective starting units, all eyes will be on how the supporting casts mesh early in preseason action. Here are the projected starting lineups for tonight’s matchup:

Minnesota Timberwolves

• SG Anthony Edwards
• SF Jonathan Kuminga
• PG LaMelo Ball
• PF Jaden McDaniels
• C Rudy Gobert

Miami Heat

• SG Klay Thompson
• SF Andrew Wiggins
• PG Davion Mitchell
• PF Giannis Antetokounmpo
• C Bam Adebayo

With a regular-season opening rematch set for Oct. 21, tonight’s tune-up provides an essential early look at where both rosters stand ahead of the games that count.

Key takeaways

• Miami and Minnesota play their 2026 NBA preseason opener today, Oct. 10.
• Giannis Antetokounmpo and Anthony Edwards are expected to play in today’s exhibition.
• Both teams feature in an Oct. 21 opening night regular-season rematch.

“We run out a lot of ground balls. We look at a lot of stuff, and we ultimately make what we think is the best decision… We maintain some flexibility. We have a bunch of assets, so we’re in a really good spot,” Dunleavy told reporters during a media press conference.

Dunleavy’s comments shed light on why the Golden State front office opted for a measured approach this summer, prioritizing Stephen Curry’s contract extension while waiting for Jimmy Butler to return from injury.

Meanwhile, as fans eagerly await LeBron‘s debut with the Sixers, Draymond Green remains confident that the veteran star’s experience will bolster Philadelphia’s quest for an NBA championship this upcoming season.

Dunleavy breaks down Curry’s extension

When asked about Curry’s willingness to accept a pay cut to stay in the Bay Area, the Warriors’ general manager offered insight into the negotiations. “We just presented him with a plan to remain incredibly competitive. I think Steph’s biggest thing is always, ‘Allow me to understand, what are you thinking?’” Dunleavy explained.

Leaning into their long-term process to rebound in the 2026–27 campaign, the Warriors will rely heavily on the star duo of Curry and Butler to carry the load, having taken a conservative approach to major roster additions this summer.

Breaking down Golden State’s offseason moves

Golden State focused its 2026 offseason additions on draft talent and key role players, selecting power forward Yaxel Lendeborg with the No. 11 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft—who went on to earn Summer League MVP honors—and taking wing Lajae Jones at No. 54, alongside free-agent signings Georges Niang, Brandon Williams, and Dalen Terry.

To round out depth and maintain roster continuity ahead of the campaign, the franchise also signed big man Graham Ike to a two-way contract, agreed to veteran extensions with Curry and Kristaps Porziņgis, and re-signed key rotation pieces including Green, Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, and Gary Payton II.

Key takeaways

• Mike Dunleavy explained why Golden State shifted its offseason plans regarding available free agents.
• Golden State selected power forward Yaxel Lendeborg with the No. 11 pick in 2026.
• Free agents Georges Niang, Brandon Williams, and Dalen Terry joined the franchise roster.

The resulting fan backlash on social media has reached a fever pitch, particularly after the Warriors officially announced the low-profile offseason signings of role players Georges Niang and Brandon Williams.

Dismayed supporters flooded online forums to vent their frustration, with fans posting comments like “Steph should do himself a favor and request a trade,” “I thought we were landing a superstar,” and “This front office is becoming a major problem.” Dub Nation remains deeply skeptical about how the roster will fare in the upcoming campaign.

Meanwhile, Thompson has already publicly expressed his excitement about teaming up with Giannis in South Beach, and the 76ers are finalizing logistics for LeBron‘s upcoming introductory press conference in Philadelphia.

A passive offseason leaves Golden State vulnerable

What hurts most for the fanbase is Golden State’s striking inertia. With Jimmy Butler still rehabbing from injury, Draymond Green departing the franchise, and Stephen Curry’s long-term future shrouded in uncertainty, the Warriors risk tumbling into NBA irrelevance before training camp even opens.

While rival contenders aggressively re-tooled through high-profile trades and free agency, Golden State’s primary responses to their roster exodus were Niang (via the Atlanta Hawks) and Williams (via the Dallas Mavericks).

At this stage, faithful supporters are no longer expecting a return to the dynasty years. Instead, they are simply hoping this patchwork group can stay competitive enough to scramble into the Western Conference playoff picture.

During his introductory press conference, Thompson was asked about playing alongside Antetokounmpo and offered nothing but high praise. “Giannis is one of the best players of all time… I think we both can just help each other,” Thompson said. “I’m going to get so many great looks playing off him and Bam.”

The pairing presents a strong complementary dynamic. Antetokounmpo and Adebayo rank among the top players at attacking the paint and will likely attract double teams, freeing up open spaces for Thompson to capitalize on, and vice versa.

Klay’s redemption season

Thompson made it clear that the upcoming campaign serves as a redemption season, expressing his desire to demonstrate that he can still play at the highest level and serve as a key contributor despite performing below his usual standard in recent years.

“It’s kind of a redemption season for me to show that I can still make an impact on winning … I still think I can do it at a high level,” Thompson said. “We have no limit to where we can go, that’s it. I’m eager to make it happen. Walking into that gym in Miami, seeing that jersey… it gave me joy and energy to be that Klay again.”

An ambitious decision by Thompson

Thompson arrives in Miami driven to win, even demonstrating his commitment financially by accepting less money than expected to taste victory again and contend for an NBA championship.

“Just the opportunity to play high-level basketball throughout the season and the chance to make a deep postseason run,” Thompson said. “Those things were so attractive to me. I’ve tasted winning before and there’s really nothing like it.”

It was only after months of drama that Giannis was finally sent to Miami, but he is confident that it was the right move. In a recent interview with NBA Europe, the Greek Freak revealed his expectations for the upcoming season, starting with his own performance.

“This season I will dominate,” Giannis said via NBA Europe. “The things I want to prove are that I’m one of the best players in the NBA. To the fans: I want to say, we’re bringing back the Heat. My new season mindset is winning. When the opportunity comes, I will dominate. Miami, get ready for an exciting season.”

What is expected from Giannis and the Heat

Giannis was at the top of the NBA hierarchy as the leader of a Bucks team that dominated the East. But as the Bucks began to decline, Giannis faded into irrelevance, showing increasing signs of frustration. Now that he is free from the Bucks, Giannis is looking to set things right, and he has an opportunity in Miami, even though it will not be easy.

With Giannis leading the way, the Heat are expected to make a strong playoff run once again—something the squad has not achieved since Jimmy Butler’s fantastic performance in 2023. Now, Miami will attempt to replicate that success behind a dominant Giannis.

On paper, while Giannis has nothing left to prove, expectations could not be higher going into next season, and he will need total concentration to ensure a successful transition. Fortunately, all the evidence says that his game will carry over just fine.

Over 13 years in the NBA, he is a two-time MVP, NBA champion, and 10-time All-Star with career averages of 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game on 62.4% shooting from the field. He dominates both ends of the floor and is widely regarded as one of the NBA’s most elite superstars. Even so, the Heat can elevate his game higher than we have ever seen before.

Speaking to the media regarding Antetokounmpo, Adebayo mentioned that he and his new teammate share the same agent and previously pondered whether a team-up could actually happen. Now that it has become a reality, Adebayo emphasized that the energy the squad gained is monumental.

“I mean, everybody has seen the battles that we had,” Adebayo said, according to The Miami Herald. “We got the same agent, and we talked about, like, what if it would happen? And now we’re to this point. So, I’m excited for the season. I’m excited to be his teammate. I’m excited for the city of Miami, and the energy we gained. And we’re looking to take that momentum into the season.”

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s arrival with the Heat

Miami acquired Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. by trading Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, and significant draft capital, including three first-round picks, marking the beginning of a new era for the organization.

The former multi-time league MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and 2021 Finals MVP joins forces with Heat captain Bam Adebayo. On paper, the two form one of the most dominant two-way pairings in NBA history. Additionally, Klay Thompson could join the mix as well, with Miami holding the veteran sharpshooter as its primary target.

How Antetokounmpo enters the season

Antetokounmpo is coming off a 2025-26 NBA season in which he averaged nearly 28 points per game to go along with 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists on an absurd 62.4% shooting from the field. Those numbers put him firmly in MVP contention and reinforced his position among the top players in the league.

With Adebayo having recently turned 29 years old, maximizing the best remaining years of his prime became a necessity for the front office. Adding one of the greatest forces in the league accomplishes exactly that.

Jefferson, speaking on the Road Trippin’ Show, argued that the Heat must remain patient with Antetokounmpo. He noted that physical, elite big men age gracefully over time, explaining that “Giannis’ window for being a top 5/10 player in this league, is a lot longer than a player who’s 6’7”.

Jefferson insists Miami does not need to force or panic a title push during Year 1. He summarized his caution to Spoelstra by concluding that “they have a 5 year window with Giannis to build a proper team around him where he can still be a guy who can lead you to a championship.”

Richard Jefferson knows what he’s talking about

Jefferson correctly highlights that building a legitimate championship roster around two interior heavyweights requires time to surround them with complementary shooters, refine half-court execution, and establish elite defensive chemistry.

Giannis’ elite productivity reinforces why Miami can afford to play the long game. Last season, Antetokounmpo posted massive numbers, averaging 30.4 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game on over 60% shooting from the field.

Channing Frye echoes roster concerns for Miami

Co-host Channing Frye shared similar doubts on the same show episode, focusing heavily on how Miami’s current core fits together. While acknowledging their imposing physical presence, Frye offered his own warning about their offensive balance, admitting that “defensively, this team is going to be a monster… There is not enough shooters”.

Frye highlighted the distinct lack of perimeter threats currently surrounding their interior stars, urging the front office to quickly address the void. He explained that the Heat “need to go find shooters, spacing, so that Bam and Giannis can get downhill and create for other people”.

Speaking on the Greek podcast AnesTea The Podcast, Antetokounmpo reflected on his departure from Milwaukee while acknowledging how difficult the decision was. “I love the city of Milwaukee. When the Miami chapter comes to an end—I don’t know when that will be, but it will happen because I’ll retire at some point—I hope I can return to Milwaukee, if they would have me,” he said.

Although he is embracing the opportunity with the Heat, Antetokounmpo admitted that leaving the organization where he became an NBA champion was a major life change, one he viewed as necessary for his continued growth as both a player and a person.

Why does Giannis want to return to Milwaukee?

Antetokounmpo explained that Milwaukee became much more than the place where he started his NBA career. Over 13 seasons, he developed a close bond with the city and its fans, making his departure one of the toughest decisions of his professional life.

The two-time NBA MVP also recalled how Bucks supporters honored him after his departure by leaving flowers and candles at his mural in Milwaukee. For Antetokounmpo, those gestures reflected the mutual respect that developed between him and the community throughout his time with the franchise.

How is Giannis approaching his new chapter with the Heat?

While Antetokounmpo remains grateful for his years in Milwaukee, he said his full attention is now on helping Miami compete for another NBA championship. The former Bucks star acknowledged that joining a new organization brings uncertainty, including adapting to new teammates and earning the trust of the Heat community.

However, he emphasized that his priority is to stay healthy, support his teammates, respect the fans, and make a positive impact both on and off the court as he begins the next phase of his career.

According to Shams Charania, the Bucks are trading Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks (including the No. 13 pick), one pick swap, and one second-round pick. It represents a fair price for the former MVP and NBA Champion.

Projected Miami Heat starting lineup

With this blockbuster trade finalized, the new-look Miami team is set to field a formidable starting five. The projected lineup features:

• PG: Davion Mitchell
• SG: Norman Powell
• SF: Andrew Wiggins
• PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo
• C: Bam Adebayo

Bucks predicted starting five

• PG: Tyler Herro
• SG: Ryan Rollins
• SF: Kyle Kuzma
• PF: Jaime Jaquez
• C: Myles Turner

Celtics left empty-handed

The Miami Heat won the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes on Monday night in a blockbuster trade with the Milwaukee Bucks, leaving the Boston Celtics on the outside looking in.

Why didn’t the Celtics win the deal? Well, it just sounds like Miami offered more for Giannis. Shams Charania detailed Boston’s trade package, which included Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks. Miami threw in three first-round picks along with a bevy of impact players, which looks to have made the Heat’s offer more competitive.

It is still surprising that the Celtics did not hesitate to offer Jaylen Brown, the very player who kept them alive and carried them to the playoffs in a season where many had written them off due to Jayson Tatum’s injury. But Brown was there, and some even believed he deserved MVP recognition for his efforts.

Expectations for the Heat

The Heat, alongside Pat Riley, want to get back to competing immediately. It is tough to move on from Tyler Herro, who is an All-Star and was arguably above Bam Adebayo in terms of overall team impact. However, the Miami squad now has a highly promising roster and it will clearly be considered a legitimate contender with that explosive duo of Bam and Giannis.
