The San Antonio Spurs have built one of the NBA’s richest Finals legacies. From Tim Duncan to a new era, their championship history is filled with unforgettable moments and remarkable success.
The San Antonio Spurs are one of the most successful franchises in NBA history, boasting five championships and a long tradition of excellence on basketball’s biggest stage. They are a model of consistency and postseason success.

They reached the NBA Finals seven times between 1999 and 2026, winning five championships under legendary head coach Gregg Popovich and with stars such as Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard.

Now, with Victor Wembanyama leading a new generation, the Spurs have returned to the NBA Finals in pursuit of another championship. In 2026, guided by head coach Mitch Johnson, they faced the New York Knicks.

How many NBA Finals have the San Antonio Spurs played in?

The San Antonio Spurs have played in six NBA Finals throughout their history. The franchise established itself as one of the league’s most consistent contenders, reaching the championship stage across multiple eras of dominance under head coaches Gregg Popovich and Larry Brown.

Victor Wembanyama looks on in Game Five of the NBA Western Conference Finals in 2026 (Source: Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

Their Finals appearances spanned more than 15 years of sustained success. During this period, the Spurs became a model franchise built on continuity, elite defense, and a core of stars that evolved across generations.

The new generation of the iconic team, led by French center Victor Wembanyama, will return to the biggest stage, as they have reached their seventh NBA Finals in 2026. On June 3, they will face the NY Knicks in Game 1.

When did the Spurs win their first NBA Championship?

The Spurs won their first NBA Championship in 1999. Led by Tim Duncan and David Robinson, San Antonio defeated the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, marking the beginning of a new era for the franchise and the first title.

That 1999 championship was especially significant because it came during a lockout-shortened season, and it immediately established them as a rising power in the league. From that moment on, San Antonio became a perennial Finals contender throughout the 2000s and early 2010s.

What years did the Spurs reach the NBA Finals?

The San Antonio Spurs reached the NBA Finals in seven different seasons, spanning more than a decade of dominance in the league. Their appearances reflect two distinct championship eras built under Gregg Popovich.

How many championships have the Spurs won?

The San Antonio Spurs have won five NBA championships. Those titles came in:

1999

2003

2005

2007

2014

All five championships were won under the leadership of Gregg Popovich, making the Spurs one of the most successful franchises of the modern NBA era. The titles were spread across three different decades.

What is the Spurs’ win-loss record in NBA Finals series?

The San Antonio Spurs have a 5–1 record in NBA Finals series. The franchise has only lost once in its entire championship history, making it one of the most efficient winners in NBA Finals play among all NBA dynasties.

Patty Mills, Tony Parker and Tim Duncan celebrate in Game Two of the Western Conference Finals during the 2014 NBA Playoffs (Source: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

San Antonio’s lone defeat came in 2013 against the Miami Heat in a seven-game series that featured LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Every other Finals appearance resulted in a championship.

Across six Finals appearances, they built a dominant postseason identity driven by elite defense, ball movement, and roster continuity. Their 5–1 Finals record places them among the most successful modern-era franchises.

Which players led the Spurs’ NBA Finals success?

The San Antonio Spurs’ NBA Finals success was led by Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, David Robinson and Kawhi Leonard across different championship eras. These five players formed the backbone of a dynasty.

Tony Parker provided speed and scoring from the point guard position, earning Finals MVP in 2007 after dominating the Cleveland Cavaliers. Manu Ginobili added creativity, clutch scoring, and energy off the bench.

Kawhi Leonard represented the transition into a new era, emerging as a two-way star in 2014 and winning Finals MVP against the Miami Heat. His performance symbolized the Spurs’ ability to evolve while remaining championship contenders.

Tim Duncan: centerpiece of all five titles and three-time Finals MVP (1999, 2003, 2005)

David Robinson: key veteran leader in the 1999 championship run

Tony Parker: Finals MVP in 2007 after dominating the Cleveland Cavaliers

Manu Ginobili: crucial sixth-man impact, especially in clutch playoff moments

Kawhi Leonard: Finals MVP in 2014 after leading the Spurs past the Miami Heat

How did Tim Duncan shape the Spurs’ championship era?

Tim Duncan shaped the San Antonio Spurs’ championship era by becoming the franchise’s foundation, leader and most consistent force across all five NBA titles.

Drafted first overall in 1997, he immediately transformed the Spurs into a title contender, forming the legendary “Twin Towers” duo with David Robinson that delivered the 1999 NBA championship. His impact went beyond scoring.

His elite defense, rebounding and decision-making allowed the Spurs to build a system around ball movement, discipline and efficiency. This style became the foundation of Gregg Popovich’s championship blueprint.

What role did Gregg Popovich play in the Spurs’ Finals success?

Gregg Popovich played the role of architect, head coach and long-term system builder behind all five San Antonio Spurs NBA championships. He is one of only a few coaches in NBA history with five championships.

Tony Parker speaks with hTony Parker speaks with head coach Gregg Popovich during Game Three of the 2014 NBA Finals (Source: Andy Lyons/Getty Images)

His biggest impact was establishing a team-first philosophy built on discipline, ball movement and defensive structure, which became the identity of the Spurs during their dynasty years. This system allowed them to remain competitive.

He also played a crucial role in player development and adaptation, maximizing the potential of undervalued talent such as Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, while helping Tim Duncan evolve into one of the greatest forwards.

Beyond tactics, he built a culture of accountability and collective success, where individual accolades were secondary to team performance. This approach created one of the most stable dynasties in modern sports.

Gregg Popovich is no longer the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, but he spoke with the players and staff following the Game 3 loss, and that seems to have played a fundamental role in the adjustments they made to win Game 4.
Gregg Popovich may no longer be the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, but his influence remains the heartbeat of the organization as they battle the Oklahoma City Thunder. Following a disappointing Game 3 loss, a private locker room visit from the legendary figure was recently brought to light by Carter Bryant.

Bryant revealed that Popovich’s message after the Game 3 defeat was remarkably simple: “Be better. Nothing more, nothing less. I mean, it’s a direct message, and the best thing when you’re in a situation like this is a direct message.” Popovich, who led the Spurs as head coach for 29 seasons before retiring last summer.

Bryant noted that the clarity of the message allowed the team to stop overthinking and start executing, which directly led to their emphatic 103-82 victory in Game 4 to tie the series. “So to us, we had to be better, we came out executing and we saw the outcome,” the rookie added.

Fox details the surprise interaction with Popovich

De’Aaron Fox shared more about the intensity of the moment during a post-game interview on NBC. “That’s the first time I’ve ever seen that. Trainers, everybody’s in there. We close the doors, we don’t let anybody know what’s going on in here. … We open that door, we see Pop come in, and it’s like, ‘Awwww,’” Fox recalled.

LEADERSHIP: Wemby went over to comfort Carter Bryant, who was on the verge of tears after he was chewed out by Mitch Johnson for picking up 4 fouls.

You don’t see young athletes do this in today’s game… respect 🫡 pic.twitter.com/8Njw8cEstA
— Polymarket Hoops (@PolymarketHoops) May 25, 2026

It was the first time all season Popovich walked in immediately after a game to deliver a reality check. “Pop’s been around throughout the course of the season, but that was the first time he walked into the locker room and was like, ‘Nah, that’s b—–, that’s not how we play basketball,’” Fox explained to Tracy McGrady on NBC.

The fiery feedback clearly lit a spark, as the Spurs responded by holding the Thunder to only 82 points just 48 hours later in Game 4. Early in the NBA postseason Victor Wembanyama echoed the importance of these interventions.

Long careers, changing franchises and eras of transition shaped the loss totals of some of the NBA’s most influential coaches, turning longevity into one of the league’s most overlooked records.
In the NBA, longevity on the sidelines often comes at a cost. The coaches with the most losses didn’t just endure tough seasons; they stayed through rebuilds, relocations, and eras when winning was secondary to stability and vision.

Names like Lenny Wilkens and Gregg Popovich appear high on the league’s loss totals, not because of fleeting failures, but because their careers stretched across decades. They coached expansion teams and franchises searching for identity.

Behind the numbers are stories of trust, patience and influence, revealing how some big names remained central to the league long after victories became harder to find.

NBA coaches with the most regular-season losses

Lenny Wilkens holds the NBA record for the most regular-season coaching losses with 1,155 defeats in 2,487 games, the top figure in league history. He coached multiple franchises over three decades, including the SuperSonics, Trail Blazers, Cavaliers, Hawks, Raptors and Knicks, accumulating the highest loss total while also ranking among the all-time leaders in games coached.

Lenny Wilkens in 2017 (Source: Maddie Meyer/Getty Images)

Bill Fitch ranks second with 1,106 losses in 2,050 games. His long career spanned several teams, such as the Cavaliers, Celtics, Rockets, Nets and Clippers, where lengthy rebuilds and roster transitions contributed to his place near the top of the loss leaderboard.

Following him is Don Nelson, with 1,063 regular-season losses over a 2,398-game career. Nelson’s tenure included stops with the Bucks, Warriors, Knicks and Mavericks, and while he’s also among the most successful coaches by wins, his extensive time on the bench naturally led to a high loss total as well.

Other coaches with high regular-season loss totals include Dick Motta (1,017 losses), Larry Brown (904), Gene Shue (861), Rick Carlisle (841), Gregg Popovich (831) and George Karl (824). These figures reflect long careers and the challenges of competing in various eras and team situations.

Following a challenging health setback, Gregg Popovich has assumed a new role within the San Antonio Spurs organization, creating an unforgettable experience for rookie Carter Bryant.
Gregg Popovich, a legendary figure in San Antonio Spurs‘ history, is making significant strides in his new role as President of Spurs Basketball. Rookie Carter Bryant, poised to embark on his inaugural NBA season with the team, recently recounted a profoundly surreal moment he experienced with Popovich.

Displaying his distinctive style, Popovich provided Bryant with an unforgettable encounter. “After practice today, Coach Pop was there, and I ended up sitting with him for about 15, 20, maybe even 25 minutes, asking him question after question. I was just sitting there. It was amazing, it was like a piece of my childhood,“ Bryant shared with San Antonio Spurs-News.

Bryant continued, “I grew up watching him win a lot. To now see him in person, to be in his presence, and to know I can walk up, sit next to him, and he knows who I am, is incredible for me.“

This moment exemplifies the profound impact Popovich continues to have within the Spurs organization. By fostering connections with the league’s emerging talents, he demonstrates a remarkable ability to bring dreams to fruition, as illustrated by Bryant’s experience.

Popovich’s knowledge impacts young Bryant

During a recent training session on Monday, Spurs’ rookie Bryant revealed his enlightening conversation with Popovich. The decorated coach provided Bryant with a wealth of advice, imparting strategic insights on plays and clarifying his expectations for Bryant’s role in the upcoming season.

“I remember I was working out one time and, in the middle of the session, Tim Duncan was with him. Popovich walked onto the court and said, ‘I want you to focus on these things, and if you do this, you’re going to be good.’ Having him as part of my arsenal, in a sense—though I struggle to find the right words—it’s truly a beautiful thing,” Bryant remarked about Popovich.

Bryant expresses gratitude for Popovich’s guidance

The moment with the iconic Spurs coach went beyond mere advice; it was also about Popovich’s openness and willingness to engage with Bryant, a 19-year-old newcomer, and answer his questions thoroughly.

“I expected to be an unknown to him, probably at the very bottom of his priorities. I was prepared not to take it personally at all,” Bryant shared. “But he did call me by my name, both first and last.”

According to reports, the New York Knicks are expected to hire a former NBA champion and longtime assistant under Steve Kerr and Gregg Popovich to replace Tom Thibodeau as head coach.
The New York Knicks appear to have identified their next head coach following the expected departure of Tom Thibodeau. Multiple reports indicate the franchise is close to hiring Mike Brown—a four-time NBA champion as an assistant under Steve Kerr with the Warriors and Gregg Popovich with the Spurs.

“The New York Knicks are expected to land on two-time NBA Coach of the Year Mike Brown as the franchise’s next head coach, sources tell ESPN,” reported Shams Charania on X (formerly Twitter), signaling that the former Kings coach is set to take over at Madison Square Garden.

According to Charania, the Knicks also interviewed former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins, New Orleans Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego, and Minnesota Timberwolves assistant coach Micah Nori. However, it appears that Brown has emerged as the franchise’s top choice to take over in New York.

Brown is coming off a strong stint with the Sacramento Kings, where he led the team to a 48–34 record in the 2022–23 season as his inaugural season, and guided the franchise to its first NBA Playoff appearance since 2006.

Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown shouts to his team during their game against the San Antonio Spurs.
That turnaround earned him NBA Coach of the Year honors that same season, for the second time in his career—making him the first coach in league history to win the award by unanimous vote. However, after a disappointing start to the 2024–25 season, the Kings decided to part ways with Brown following a 13–18 record.

Brown’s tenure with Popovich and Kerr

Popovich hired Brown as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs in 2000, where he also served as head coach of the team’s Summer League squad. By 2003, the Spurs went on to win the NBA championship after defeating the New Jersey Nets in six games—a roster that included Steve Kerr as a player.

After head coaching stints with the Cavaliers—where he coached LeBron James—and the Lakers, Brown was hired by Steve Kerr in 2016 to join the Warriors as an associate coach. During his time in the Bay Area, he was part of three of the four championships won by the Golden State dynasty.

Miami Heat president Pat Riley delivered a heartfelt message to Gregg Popovich after the legendary San Antonio Spurs head coach announced his retirement, praising his leadership throughout the NBA.
The Miami Heat are coming off a disappointing season that ended in a first-round sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 4–0 loss in the 2024–25 NBA Playoffs made it clear that the organization faces major questions heading into the offseason—starting with team president Pat Riley, who now confronts the aftermath of letting go of the franchise’s biggest star. Riley take a moment to send a message to San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich

During his end-of-season press conference Friday, Riley took a moment to honor longtime Spurs head coach Popovich, who recently announced he would step down from coaching due to health concerns. Popovich will transition to a front-office role as the Spurs’ president, while assistant Mitch Johnson takes over head coaching duties.

“When you talk about Pop, I’ve reached out to him. I love him dearly,” Riley said. “And I wish him nothing but the best. He’ll be a great president. He’s loved not only in San Antonio, but throughout the league by players—and that’s very unique. I wish nothing but the best for Pop.”

Riley’s words echo a sentiment felt across the league. With a legendary résumé, Popovich leaves behind a coaching legacy that has influenced generations. His impact extends far beyond San Antonio, and he remains one of the most respected figures in NBA history.

Popovich (1,412) and Riley (1,210) currently rank first and fifth, respectively, on the NBA’s all-time coaching wins list. While Riley built championship-caliber teams with the Lakers, Knicks, and Heat, Popovich remained a one-franchise icon, leading the Spurs to five NBA titles—including their 2014 championship victory over Miami.

Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs stands during the playing of the national anthem before the game against the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center on December 23, 2023.

Pat Riley addresses Jimmy Butler drama

Jimmy Butler had been the face of the franchise for several seasons, leading the Heat to NBA Finals appearances in 2020 and 2023. But his final campaign in Miami was overshadowed by behind-the-scenes tension and stalled contract talks. In February, Butler was traded to the Golden State Warriors.

“There’s no doubt what happened with Jimmy had a tremendous impact on our team,” Riley admitted during Friday’s media availability. “The buck stopped with me. I’ll take that hit. What happened in the regular season, I don’t want to discuss.”

Butler’s relationship with the front office deteriorated in recent months, with Riley standing firm on his decision not to offer a long-term extension. “I’m not going to apologize for saying no on the contract extension,” Riley said. “I don’t think I should.” As the franchise looks to reset, Riley’s comments made it clear: the Heat will have to forge a new identity—without Butler and with difficult decisions ahead.

“To be able to cross paths, we’ve crossed paths with Coach Pop so many times and I had one opportunity to actually play for him in the Olympics in 2004. And obviously going against him three times in the NBA Finals. I mean, what can you say. You talk about the superlatives when it comes to Coach Pop, his list is out of this world. But I think what a lot of people have found out if you ever got an opportunity to encounter a one-on-one with him or even just in cross, how great of a f** guy that guy is,” stated LeBron James on Mind The Game Podcast.

After his retirement, Gregg Popovich leaves a lasting mark on the NBA. He won five league championships and made 22 straight playoff appearances. He also reached 1.422 regular-season victories.
LeBron James addresses retirement rumors with a clear message about his NBA future

After the recent elimination of the Los Angeles Lakers, many fans and NBA insiders questioned the future of LeBron James. They did not doubt his level on the court. He discussed his priorities heading into next season and also brought up the topic of retirement.

Although he has not confirmed whether he will return next season, the fact that his top priority is getting healthy has fans hopeful he is not done yet.
Gregg Popovich’s retirement has sparked major discussion in the NBA. His impact on the league is undeniable. Because of that, Warriors forward Draymond Green shared heartfelt words for the former Spurs head coach.
After nearly three decades leading the San Antonio Spurs, Gregg Popovich has officially announced his retirement from coaching due to health concerns. His departure marks the end of an era, as he steps down after 29 seasons at the helm of the franchise. Popovich’s decision did not go unnoticed. Several NBA legends reacted to the news and expressed their admiration for the iconic coach. Among them, Draymond Green took a moment to honor Popovich sharing a heartfelt message.

“It sucks to see him go… Everyone says Steven Adams is a gentle giant. That’s Pop. … I just wish I had one last time to go hug him on the sideline… he’s meant so much to this league,” stated Draymond Green on press conference. During his tenure, he boosted many NBA legends such as Manu Ginobili, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and David Robinson showcasing his unique talent as head coach.

Even at 76 years old, Gregg managed to continue to make an impact on the franchise. Before his retirement, he forged two promising players in Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, focusing his efforts on a bright future for the Spurs and demonstrating that his priority is the franchise, not furthering his career with NBA titles. Although we will see the best of both players without Popovich as head coach, we cannot forget that it was he who planted the seed for the future.

However, his legacy goes beyond the courts as he was a standard bearer for racism, coming out to defend on multiple occasions in different situations. With this he earned the respect of several NBA players who saw Gregg as an example to follow. Even Tim Duncan had some nice words for him after being crowned in the 2020 NBA Hall of Fame demonstrating that his legacy will always be present.

Draymond Green #23 of the Golden State Warriors greets San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich at the end of the game at AT&T Center on April 9, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas.

Have Gregg Popovich and Draymond Green ever been on the same team?

Draymond Green and Gregg Popovich never had the opportunity to share an NBA team. Green entered the league in the 2012–13 season and has spent his entire career with the Golden State Warriors. However, the two did cross paths on the international stage, teaming up during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics with Team USA.

Despite that experience, Green admitted he still felt something was missing. “My only regret is I didn’t get a chance to play for him…That’s someone you want to go to war for, not just because he’s a great coach, but because he’s a great man. He stands for something, he speaks up, he cares,” admitted Green.

San Antonio Spurs rookie star Victor Wembanyama reacted to the retirement of the NBA head coach Gregg Popovich.
The San Antonio Spurs wrapped up a transitional 2024–25 NBA season that, while underwhelming in the win column, served primarily as a developmental campaign centered around rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama. One of the season’s most emotional storylines came with the official retirement of legendary head coach Gregg Popovich, who steps away after nearly three decades at the helm.

Wembanyama, the 7-foot-4 cornerstone of the franchise’s rebuild, took to social media to honor his coach with a heartfelt message following the announcement.

“29 years. Coach, thank you for your wisdom, for your leadership, for the culture you created… but most importantly for being a great and inspiring person,” Wembanyama posted on X (formerly Twitter). “It was an honor to be a part of those 29 years. Wishing you the best on your new chapter,” he added, closing the message with a goat emoji.

Popovich, 76, leaves behind a legacy unmatched in NBA history. His 1,422 regular-season wins are the most all-time, and he guided the Spurs to five NBA championships while establishing a culture of sustained excellence that became the envy of the league.

Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs is consoled by head coach Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs during a game against the Denver Nuggets in the first half at Moody Center on March 15, 2024 in Austin, Texas.

What’s next for the Spurs?

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Spurs have promoted Mitch Johnson to head coach following Popovich’s retirement. Johnson has been with the organization since 2016, first serving as an assistant for the G League’s Austin Spurs before joining San Antonio’s bench in 2019. He also filled in as interim head coach during Popovich’s absences, earning the trust of the locker room and front office.

Johnson’s promotion ensures continuity for a young core led by Wembanyama and newly acquired star De’Aaron Fox. Both players have built a strong rapport with Johnson, and his elevation means they won’t need to adjust to a new system—an advantage as the team looks to accelerate its growth.

While other franchises like the Denver Nuggets pivot to new eras, the Spurs are doubling down on internal development and long-term planning.

A bright future in San Antonio

With Wembanyama anchoring the frontcourt, Fox providing veteran leadership and dynamic playmaking, and rookie standout Stephon Castle emerging as a legitimate contributor, the Spurs boast one of the NBA’s most intriguing young trios.
Legendary head coach Gregg Popovich has officially announced his retirement. Many fans immediately began to worry about the future of his promising sports project. However, the San Antonio Spurs may have already made a clear decision regarding their next head coach.
The San Antonio Spurs have endured a challenging NBA season. They failed to secure a postseason spot, which was disappointing. However, the franchise continues to show stability and a strong commitment to its future. Gregg Popovich retired as head coach after facing health problems. His departure raised doubts among fans, who feared the team would abandon its long-term vision. Now, the Spurs seem to have made a decision on who will take over as head coach next season.

According to Shams Charania, the San Antonio Spurs already have a new head coach after Gregg Popovich’s retirement. The franchise chose Mitch Johnson, who has worked within the organization since 2016. He started as an assistant with the Austin Spurs. Then, in 2019, he joined the San Antonio bench. He also served as interim head coach during Popovich’s absences. As a result, the Spurs decided to maintain continuity by putting Mitch in charge.

This decision is great news for Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. Both players already built strong chemistry with Mitch. They will not need to adapt to a new coaching system. Therefore, they will have another chance to showcase their offensive talent. While other teams like the Denver Nuggets are starting new projects, San Antonio are choosing a different path. The Spurs are betting on stability and long-term growth by trusting someone from within.

Do the San Antonio Spurs have long-term potential to become an NBA powerhouse?

Victor Wembanyama’s arrival in the 2023–24 season marked a turning point for the Spurs. The franchise began building a project focused on young talent. They bet on players with the potential to make a long-term impact. Stephon Castle is a perfect example. The rookie impressed with his performance all year. As a result, he earned the Rookie of the Year award. His rise confirms the team’s exciting future.

Head coach Mitch Johnson of the San Antonio Spurs converses with De’Aaron Fox #4 against the Atlanta Hawks during the second quarter at State Farm Arena on February 05, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia.

To strengthen the core, the Spurs brought in De’Aaron Fox. Despite being only 27, he adds experience to one of the youngest lineups in the league. An injury kept him from showing his best early on. However, his steady track record gives the team hope. They see him as the experienced leader this young group needs. In his most last game, he scored 32 points. That strong finish gives fans hope that next season could be even better for him.

" title="Spurs’ star Chris Paul opens up about his future and retirement plans" publication_id="BUS#/nba/spurs-star-chris-paul-opens-up-about-his-future-and-retirement-plans">

If Mitch Johnson keeps young players like Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle performing well, the Spurs could thrive for years. But the team must find defensive consistency. That remains Johnson’s biggest challenge. Still, this bet on continuity makes sense. Gregg Popovich spent 29 years in the role, and Johnson grew up inside the franchise.
