Fernando Mendoza was well-deserving of the 2025 Heisman Trophy after a year that will stand not only as a significant achievement for him and his team but as something rarely seen in college football.
Fernando Mendoza is the winner of the 2025 Heisman Trophy following a standout season in which he threw for 33 touchdowns and 2,980 yards to help Indiana establish a 13-0 record. The season was undoubtedly a showcase of his talent as a quarterback and the significant potential he has to offer.

Now, as a Heisman winner, Fernando Mendoza will have an extra boost heading into the NFL, where he is sure to be a highly contested pick by teams in need of a top quarterback with innate talent and the potential to be a franchise centerpiece.

For Indiana, Fernando Mendoza winning the Heisman is a tremendously important achievement, as it is the first time in program history that one of their players has won the trophy. Furthermore, thanks to him, the team won a conference title this season, something that had not happened since 1945.

Mendoza’s Heisman acceptance speech

Among the things Mendoza said after winning the Heisman, he spoke about how sometimes you don’t need the highest-ranked players or rankings to go far with a team; the important factors are focus and believing that the talent you possess is enough to succeed.

“The truth is, you don’t need the most stars, hype, or rankings. You just need discipline, heart, and people who believe, and you need to believe in your own abilities. I hope this moment shows you that chasing your dreams is worth it.”

He also dedicated some words to his former team: “To my Cal family, thank you for being the first to believe in my future. Thank you for the opportunity, educating me and giving me the foundation that enabled me to grow into the person I am today.”

And of course, he didn’t forget his mother: “Mom, this is your trophy as much as it is mine. You’ve always been my biggest fan … Your sacrifices, courage, love…,” Mendoza said. “Those have been my first playbook and the playbook that I’m gonna carry by my side, through my entire life…”

Some college football programs don’t just produce great athletes—they shape legends. Decade after decade, certain schools have become synonymous with excellence, building dynasties that extend far beyond the Saturday spotlight.

The Heisman Trophy, awarded to the game’s most outstanding player, has often served as proof of that dominance. From powerhouse programs to surprising contenders, history shows where the sport’s brightest stars most often emerge.

Patterns run deep: a mix of tradition, coaching brilliance, and relentless recruiting has created true hotbeds of talent. These programs have not only collected hardware but also written lasting chapters in football’s rich narrative.

LSU | 3

Joe Burrow of the LSU Tigers in 2019. (Source: Adam Hunger/Getty Images)

1959 — Billy Cannon

2019 — Joe Burrow

2023 — Jayden Daniels

LSU’s Heisman legacy spans decades and styles. Billy Cannon in 1959 was a two-way star, celebrated for his speed, toughness, and “Halloween run” (among other iconic moments) — the kind of player whose exploits became legend in Baton Rouge and beyond.

Joe Burrow’s 2019 season lives in highlight reels: efficient passing, record books, team success, championship chase. He brought LSU not only its second Heisman but also its national title. That combination raises a program’s status in hearts and in history.

And then came Jayden Daniels in 2023. His performance — both through the air and on the ground — supplied a modern twist: prolific, multi-dimensional, yet under immense expectations. He joined Cannon and Burrow in that elite LSU trio of Heisman winners.

Nebraska | 3

Johnny Rodgers, Mike Rozier and Eric Crouch. (Source: NCAA and Nebraska Athletics)

1972 — Johnny Rodgers

1983 — Mike Rozier

2001 — Eric Crouch

Nebraska’s contributions to Heisman history are reminders of the Big Eight and later Big 12’s power in developing punishing ground attacks and dynamic backs. Johnny Rodgers in 1972 lit up the nation with big plays as a receiver and returner, feted for his breakaway speed and knack for the dramatic.

Mike Rozier in 1983 was a workhorse back who carried the Huskers’ offense. He ran behind big lines but also ran with style and urgency: every snap felt like he had the potential to break off something explosive.

Eric Crouch in 2001 was a perfect blend of leadership and dual-threat quarterbacking. He ran Nebraska’s offense with a vision that adapted with the game, made big plays when needed, carried the weight of expectation, and made the Heisman at a time of transition for many programs.

Michigan | 3

Charles Woodson in 1997. (Source: Heisman)

1940 — Tom Harmon

1991 — Desmond Howard

1997 — Charles Woodson

Michigan’s Heisman history stretches back to the early golden years of the award. Tom Harmon in 1940 was nearly mythic — his versatility, his highlight moments, his ability to influence games as a rusher, passer, returner. Harmon was one of those players who shaped what it meant to be a star.

Desmond Howard’s 1991 season remains one of the most iconic in Heisman lore: his punt returns, his receptions, his moments under the lights. The “Heisman pose” after his Ohio State breakaway is still one of college football’s most enduring images.

Charles Woodson in 1997 perhaps defied category — not just a defensive back, but a playmaker in all three phases. Interceptions, punt returns, coverage, offense: Woodson’s wins weren’t just charted in stats, but in momentum swings, game-turning moments and a football IQ that transcended traditional roles.

Florida State | 3

Jameis Winston in 2013. (Source: Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images)

1993 — Charlie Ward

2000 — Chris Weinke

2013 — Jameis Winston

Florida State has made its Heisman mark carefully, and with flair. Charlie Ward in 1993 helped cement FSU as a national brand under Bobby Bowden; his dual-threat leadership and championship run showed college teams outside the traditional power centers could compete at the highest levels.

Chris Weinke’s 2000 campaign was different: older, experienced, patient. Weinke showed that the Heisman doesn’t always go to the youngest or flashiest but sometimes to the one with wisdom and timing. His play finessed defenses in ways few expected.

Jameis Winston in 2013 exploded onto the national stage — freshman quarterback, huge numbers, big moments, biggest personality. He showed how momentum, fan attention, and stats can align to create a march toward the Heisman. Also, that FSU could still produce winners even as the college football landscape grew ever more crowded.

Florida | 3

Steve Spurrier, Danny Wuerffel and Tim Tebow. (Source: NCAA and Florida Athletics)

1966 — Steve Spurrier

1996 — Danny Wuerffel

2007 — Tim Tebow

Florida’s Heisman winners track the progression of the passing game in the SEC and beyond. Steve Spurrier’s 1966 season was a turning point: the “Florida Flyer” showed that precision passing and innovation could make waves in a Conference dominated by ground-and-pound ball.

Thirty years later, Danny Wuerffel rode Steve Spurrier’s return to dominance, thriving in the “Fun ‘n’ Gun” offense. Wuerffel wasn’t just throwing lots of passes; he managed them, read defenses, made clutch decisions. His year was as much about evaluating situational football as it was about big plays.

Then came Tim Tebow in 2007, perhaps Florida’s most expansive Heisman story. He passed, he ran, he motivated — he was a force on the field and off. With Tebow, Florida’s program leaned fully into the blend of spectacle and substance, the kind of player who could carry narrative as much as points.

Army | 3

(Source: NCAA and Heisman)

1945 — Felix “Doc” Blanchard

1946 — Glenn Davis

1958 — Pete Dawkins

Army’s era of Heisman dominance came during and just after World War II, an epoch when the service academies held enormous prestige in college football. Felix “Doc” Blanchard and Glenn Davis, back-to-back winners in 1945 and 1946, were more than great players; they embodied wartime America’s values: discipline, sacrifice, teamwork. Their rivalry, their skill, their dramatic games remain legendary.

Pete Dawkins’ win in 1958 rounded out that golden era. A Rhodes Scholar, an Army captain, his Heisman was not just for athletic excellence, but the full package: character, leadership, academic achievement. In today’s politicized sports media, it’s almost a lost art to win a major award under that kind of multidimensional scrutiny.

Though Army hasn’t produced a Heisman winner since then, those three trophies still loom large in college football memory — reminders of a time when service academies were center stage, and depth, restraint, strategy carried weight alongside speed and size.

Auburn | 3

Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson and Cam Newton. (Source: NCAA)

1971 — Pat Sullivan

1985 — Bo Jackson

2010 — Cam Newton

Auburn’s Heisman lore is part folklore, woven into the Plains’ fabric. Pat Sullivan’s win in 1971 was more than a stat line — it marked the Tigers as a program where talent could shine nationally, especially in a Southern Conference environment that valued toughness and grit.

Bo Jackson’s 1985 season is still talked about in reverent tones — he played like a force of nature, rushing, catching, hurdling, dominating. He didn’t just win the Heisman; he became an icon, one of those rare athletes whose name echoes in pop culture as much as in sports history.

Cam Newton in 2010 added another dimension to Auburn’s tradition. He was a dual-threat quarterback before that was a buzzword, combining passing touchdowns with rushing explosiveness, engineering an undefeated season, and winning both the Heisman and the national championship in the same year. The narrative arc for Auburn reached its summit in ’10.

Alabama | 4

Mark Ingram #22 of the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2009. (Source: Chris Trotman/Getty Images)

2009 — Mark Ingram

2015 — Derrick Henry

2020 — Devonta Smith

2021 — Bryce Young

Alabama’s journey toward Heisman prominence is relatively recent but intensely impactful. Before 2009, the Crimson Tide — despite national titles and NFL stars — had never claimed college football’s most prestigious individual honor. Mark Ingram’s breakthrough that year ended the drought.

When Derrick Henry seized it in 2015, it was more than stats: he dominated the Southeastern Conference with sheer power, becoming a symbol of Alabama’s physical identity. Six years later, DeVonta Smith rewrote expectations of a receiver’s role, delivering crisp routes, elite hands, and touchdowns by the dozen.

Then came Bryce Young in 2021, the first quarterback in Alabama history to win the Heisman. His season was a showcase of precision under pressure — between the blitzes, the high stakes, and those huge moments late in games, he embodied Alabama’s evolution: from bruising backs to surgical throwers.

Notre Dame | 7

Paul Hornung (Source: NCAA)

1943 — Angelo Bertelli

1947 — John Lujack

1949 — Leon Hart

1953 — John Lattner

1956 — Paul Hornung

1964 — John Huarte

1987 — Tim Brown

For Notre Dame, the Heisman story is woven into the mythology of college football itself. The Fighting Irish produced seven winners, from Angelo Bertelli in 1943 to Tim Brown in 1987, capturing the spirit of different eras.

Legends like Paul Hornung, Leon Hart and John Lujack not only defined the Irish on the field but also contributed to the aura that made the program larger than life. Brown’s award, the school’s most recent, was a reminder of Notre Dame’s ability to produce transcendent talent even as the game evolved.

While the Irish have gone decades without adding to their Heisman total, the weight of their tradition ensures that each winner remains part of an enduring narrative, one where faith, history and football intersect in a uniquely American way.

Oklahoma | 7

Jason White of the University of Oklahoma Sooners in 2003. (Source: Chris Trotman/Getty Images)

1952 — Billy Vessels

1969 — Steve Owens

1978 — Billy Sims

2003 — Jason White

2008 — Sam Bradford

2017 — Baker Mayfield

2018 — Kyler Murray

Few programs embody offensive ingenuity quite like Oklahoma, and its seven Heisman winners mirror the program’s ability to reinvent itself with each era. Billy Vessels, Steve Owens and Billy Sims built the Sooners’ early tradition, but in the 21st century the program evolved into a quarterback factory.

Jason White’s 2003 breakthrough opened the door for Sam Bradford in 2008, followed by Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, who delivered back-to-back Heismans in 2017 and 2018.

That stretch cemented OU as a modern powerhouse for aerial attacks, showcasing how coaching and system design can turn individual brilliance into national recognition. The Sooners’ Heisman legacy underscores both their historical roots and their place in shaping today’s game.

Ohio State | 7

Troy Smith of Ohio State University in 2006.

1944 — Les Horvath

1950 — Vic Janowicz

1955 — Howard Cassady

1974 and 1975 — Archie Griffin

1995 — Eddie George

2006 — Troy Smith

In Columbus, Heisman history feels almost routine. Ohio State’s seven winners represent decades of consistency, with players who redefined versatility and power. Archie Griffin remains the lone two-time Heisman recipient in history, securing back-to-back trophies in 1974 and 1975, a feat that still sets the Buckeyes apart.

Eddie George’s bruising 1995 season, Troy Smith’s command of the 2006 offense, and the early contributions of Les Horvath and Vic Janowicz all illustrate the breadth of talent to emerge from the program.

Far from a one-position dynasty, Ohio State’s winners reflect adaptability and evolution, blending tradition with modern dominance and ensuring the Buckeyes remain one of the sport’s most storied Heisman hotbeds.

Southern California | 8

Carson Palmer of the University of Southern California in 2002.

1965 — Mike Garrett

1968 — O. J. Simpson

1979 — Charles White

1981 — Marcus Allen

2002 — Carson Palmer

2004 — Matt Leinart

2005 — Reggie Bush

2022 — Caleb Williams

From the glamour of Los Angeles to the roar of the Coliseum, USC has long been a cradle of individual greatness. With eight Heisman winners, the Trojans stand at the top of college football’s most decorated programs.

Their legacy spans generations, from Mike Garrett’s electrifying 1965 season to Marcus Allen’s record-breaking campaign in 1981, and into the modern era with quarterbacks like Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and Caleb Williams.

Even Reggie Bush’s 2005 award, once vacated in controversy, was reinstated in 2024 as rules around name, image and likeness reshaped the sport. Each winner reflects not just dominance on the field but also a cultural imprint that made USC’s Heisman tradition as enduring as its championship banners.

As we approach a new edition of the Super Bowl, we take a look back at the players who have not only lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy but have also won the prestigious Heisman Trophy.
A new edition of the Super Bowl is approaching, bringing with it some intriguing historical facts. In this case, here at Bolavip, we’ll take a look at those quarterbacks who not only had the privilege of winning the Vince Lombardi Trophy but have also been honored with the prestigious Heisman Trophy.

Excelling in college football and being recognized with the Heisman at the end of the season doesn’t guarantee success in the NFL, let alone making it to the Super Bowl or winning it. In fact, there are only a few instances where a QB has achieved this remarkable feat in the sport.

On February 9th, the quarterbacks representing their teams will be Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts. Both possess extraordinary talent, yet share the unique fact that neither of them won the Heisman during their time in the NCAAF. In Mahomes’ case, Lamar Jackson took home the award, while Joe Burrow was the one who edged out Hurts in his class.

Which quarterbacks have won both the Super Bowl and the Heisman Trophy?

The list could begin with Roger Staubach. The talented quarterback was an icon for the Dallas Cowboys during his time in the NFL, leading his team to Super Bowl victories in both Super Bowl VI and XII.

Throughout his ten years with the franchise, Staubach established himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks in Dallas Cowboys history. In Super Bowl VI, where they defeated Don Shula’s Dolphins 24-3, the quarterback was also named the MVP of the game.

In 1963, while playing for Navy, Roger Staubach was awarded the Heisman Trophy in recognition of his outstanding season with the team in the NCAA.

Former Dallas Cowboy player Roger Staubach looks on prior to a game between the Washington Football Teams and the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium on December 26, 2021 in Arlington, Texas.

Jim Plunkett, the hero of the Raiders

Another well-known case of quarterbacks who have won both the Super Bowl and the Heisman Trophy is Jim Plunkett, an icon of the Raiders during the 1980s.

The legendary player lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy twice, even being named MVP in one of those victories. Super Bowl XV saw the Oakland Raiders defeat the Eagles, while in Super Bowl XVIII, under the name of the Los Angeles Raiders, his team triumphed over the Washington Redskins.

In 1970, while playing for Stanford, Plunkett was awarded the Heisman Trophy for his outstanding season. Later, he was selected by the New England Patriots with the first overall pick in the NFL draft.

John Huarte, with Notre Dame and the Chiefs

Further back in time, John Huarte also made history by becoming one of the privileged quarterbacks to not only win a Super Bowl title but also claim the Heisman Trophy in College Football.

As one of the most important players in the history of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Huarte not only led his team to the National Championship in 1964 but also earned the Heisman Trophy that same year.

Once in the NFL, the quarterback went on to become a Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs, defeating the Minnesota Vikings 23-7 in Super Bowl IV.

Which Heisman-Winning quarterbacks couldn’t win a Super Bowl?

Perhaps the most recent case of a quarterback who won the Heisman Trophy but came very close to securing a Super Bowl is Joe Burrow and his Cincinnati Bengals. In 2019, after an exceptional campaign with the LSU Tigers, the talented quarterback won the Heisman Trophy, edging out others, including Jalen Hurts.

Unfortunately for him, he came very close to winning Super Bowl LVI. At the start of 2022, after a tough 23-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, the Bengals were left empty-handed in that dramatic championship finish.

Broncos vs Bengals DEC 28 December 28, 2024: Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow warms up prior to WEEK 17 of the NFL regular season between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Denver Broncos in Cincinnati, Ohio.

In 2010, while playing for Auburn, Cam Newton won the Heisman Trophy, which earned him an immediate jump to the NFL. Unfortunately for SuperCam, in Super Bowl 50, Peyton Manning’s Broncos proved superior, defeating the Carolina Panthers 24-10 and relegating them to runner-up status.

Quarterback Cam Newton #1 of the Carolina Panthers reacts while playing against the Denver Broncos during Super Bowl 50 at Levi’s Stadium on February 7, 2016

Winning both the Heisman and a Super Bowl is definitely not for everyone. Those who have achieved this feat in the storied history of the sport are few, and for those who wish to join their ranks, it will take more than 100% of their talent to achieve these monumental accomplishments in their careers.

Saturday night was set to be an historic night in college football given the winner of the most prestigious award was being revealed. It was USC QB Caleb Williams the one who took home the Heisman Trophy. Find out what NCAA record the Trojans tied.
The college football season will end very soon, but Saturday night was a great opportunity to hand the most prestigious award for one of four finalists. In the end, it was QB Caleb Williams of the USC Trojans the winner of the 2022 Heisman Trophy.

When Lincoln Riley became the head coach of the Trojans an immediate improvement was expected. He had already produced two Heisman Trophy winners in the past such as Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. Both also ended up being first overall picks in the NFL draft, so the excitement was high.

Williams won the award over three other quarterbacks. The remaining finalists were Georgia’s Stetson Bennett IV, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, and TCU’s Max Duggan. This is an outstanding feat for the player, but the university also entered the record books with it.

What NCAA record did the USC Trojans tie with Williams’ Heisman Trophy?

Every university wants one of their alums to win this award for what it represents. It is handed to the most outstanding player in college football, so it comes with a prestigious tag. Williams precisely fit that mold after the great season he had as a sophomore.

The quarterback threw for 4075 yards, 37 touchdowns and only four interceptions. He also ran for 10 touchdowns helping his team end with a 11-2 record, although they lost 47-24 against Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game. It meant putting the institution at the top of an important category.

USC tied the record for the most Heisman Trophy winners. This was the eighth time one of their players receivedthe honor in what would make them the winningest alone. However, the Heisman Trust and the NCAA no longer recognize the award given to Reggie Bush in 2005. So this one actually appears as their seventh, reaching a milestone that is also held by Oklahoma, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. That is why they only share thefirst place.

This is the most valuable trophy for a college football player, it is a way of saying that a college player had an incredible season like no other player. Check here how much it costs.
Jay Berwanger was the first college player to win the Heisman Trophy in 1935, with only 84 points he was selected as the winner, at that time Jay was playing for the Chicago Maroons.

The only college player with three thousand points in a Heisman Trophy ballot was O.J. Simpson with a total of 2,853 points. So far no other player has surpassed that big amount of points.

The last Heisman Trophy winning player in the 20th century was Ron Dayne, as a player for the Wisconsin Badgers he was drafted with 2,042 points.

Does the Heisman Trophy have any monetary value?

The Downtown Athletic Club does not say how much it costs to make a Heisman Trophy or if it has a defined price, but it is estimated that the trophy can be worth between $100,000 and $200,000.

A proofof the Heisman Trophy value was during a recent sale when Charles White’s 1979 trophy sold once for $184,000 and a second time for $300,000.

In 2021 the winner was Bryce Young, he is a quarterback, most players like him have won a total of 38 Heisman Trophy awards.

Caleb Williams is one of the best players in College Football and definitely a top-prospect to become a star in the NFL. However, he won't be at the 2023 Draft and here are the important reasons why.
After an amazing season withUSC, QBCaleb Williamsis the clearfavorite to win the2022 Heisman Trophy as the best player in College Football. TheTrojanswere really close of the playoffs and a shot at the national title, but a crushing 47-24 loss withUtahin thePac-12 Championship Gamederailed their hopes.

However, Caleb Williamshas been spectacular throwing for 4075 yards, 37 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions. The 20-year old is just a phenomenal athlete and the sky is the limit. That’s why many experts and recruits are convinced that he will be a success in the NFL.

The 2023 NFL Draft is scheduled to be held in Kansas City from April 27 to April 29. In what should be a first round with a lot of quarterbacks taken, Caleb Williams is seen by thousands of fans as the biggest hope to transform their franchises. Nevertheless, that won’t happen because the quarterback cannot be taken by any team.

Will Caleb Williams be in the 2023 NFL Draft?

The 2023 NFL Draft will have a lot of big names at the quarterback position such asBryce Young (Alabama), C.J. Stroud (Ohio State), Anthony Richardson (Florida) and Will Levis (Kentucky). Caleb Williams won’t be one of them.

Caleb Williams is eligible to enter the NFL Draft until the 2024 edition. That’s because he has just played one year with the Oklahoma Sooners (freshman) and another for the USC Trojans (sophomore). The rules mandate that he has to play at the college level at least for three years. “To be eligible for the draft, players must have been out of high school for at least three years and must have used up their college eligibility before the start of the next college football season”.

In 2024, unless something extraordinary happens, Caleb Williams will be a first-round pick joining other recent USC quarterbaks with that distinction such as Sam Darnold, Mark Sanchez, Matt Leinart and Carson Palmer.

Who are the favorites to win the 2022 Heisman Trophy?

After an amazing season with USC, QB Caleb Williams is a huge favorite to win the 2022 Heisman Trophy. The Trojans were really close of the College Football Playoffs, but a crushing 47-24 loss with Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game derailed their hopes.
The other three candidates are QB Max Duggan of TCU (+2000), QBStetson Bennett of Georgia (+3000) and QB C.J. Stroud of Ohio State (+5000). RB Blake Corum of Michigan seemed to be a huge candidate. However, a knee injury late in the season took him out of the race.

Stroud is the key factor as a candidate for the Heisman Trophy.

These are the games why Jim Harbaugh was brought to transform Michigan. The head coach has the Wolverines with an 11-0 record (No.3 ranked team in the nation) and a great shot at the College Football Playoffs. Harbaugh has done an extraordinary job since his arrival in 2015, but there are very few signature wins during his tenure. What better chance than a victoryon the road at Ohio State to clinch the division, fight for the Big Ten Championship and almost guarantee a spot in the semifinals for the national title (Michigan haven’t won it since 1997).

A Cinderella season for UCLA was almost entirely crushed after an incredible 34-28 loss to Arizona. If the Bruins want to stay alive, they’ll have to beat USC as a 2.5 point underdog. There’s no margin of error for them in theCrosstown Showdown. UCLA have an 8-2 record and trail USC, Oregon and Utah in the conference. However, a win vs the Trojans could shock the Pac-12 considering the Ducks and the Utes also face each other this week.

Now, the Trojans can end for good the Bruins’ season. With a9-1 record, USC still have a shot at the College Football Playoffs. If they win, they’re in the Pac-12 Championship Game which is scheduled to be played on December 2 in Las Vegas.
