Jannik Sinner addressed the media to share his thoughts on his recent health struggles during his high-stakes clash against Daniil Medvedev at the Italian Open.
Anticipation is reaching a fever pitch for what Jannik Sinner can accomplish in the upcoming Italian Open final against Casper Ruud. However, fresh off a grueling semifinal victory over Daniil Medvedev, the Italian sensation revealed he was battling through some physical fatigue and detailed exactly what he was enduring during the high-stakes matchup.

“I struggled a bit to sleep last night. It was a situation I hadn’t been in yet, where you need to finish when you’re nearly done with the match. You sleep, but you don’t know how you’re going to feel the next day,” Sinner revealed to the media during his post-match press conference.

While Sinner looked uncharacteristically sluggish at times against Medvedev, his raw talent ultimately carried him through the adversity. Having already eclipsed Novak Djokovic’s historic Masters record with his earlier win over Andrey Rublev, the world’s top-ranked player is now locked in on capturing a monumental title on home soil against Ruud.

The final matchup promises plenty of respect, as Ruud spent the earlier part of the week praising Sinner’s tactical evolution, silencing critics who had previously questioned the Italian’s ceiling and his ability to sustain this historic career run.

Sinner’s grueling road to the Rome final

Though Sinner attributed his uneven play against Medvedev to a lack of rest, the Italian superstar has put on an absolute clinic throughout an intense tournament, proving to the tennis world that he is a threat to dominate on any surface.

Navigating this kind of physical toll is simply the reality Sinner must accept at this stage of his meteoric rise. With Roland Garros looming on the horizon to host the world’s elite, his ability to manage his body in Rome will be the ultimate test of his championship mettle.

Jannik Sinner has now captured 27 consecutive victories on the ATP circuit, leaving many to wonder how many more he needs to reach the all-time record.
Jannik Sinner is currently experiencing an incredible run of form, reaching 28 consecutive match wins after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals of the Rome Open, surpassing Novak Djokovic’s Masters 1000 record for the longest winning streak in the history of the format.

While Sinner is now the new owner of the record for the longest winning streak in Masters 1000 events with 33 triumphs, he still has a long way to go to claim the absolute record on the ATP Tour.

Djokovic currently holds the record for the longest winning streak in ATP Tour history (since 1990), having achieved 43 consecutive victories between 2010 and 2011. It remains a difficult milestone for Sinner to overtake, though the Italian recently surpassed Andre Agassi on the all-time list to claim seventh place with his 28 victories.

The top eight list

Should the World No. 1 extend his current streak, he could soon bypass Pete Sampras, who sits just one win ahead of him. However, reaching the absolute summit of the leaderboard will be a monumental challenge for the Italian.

Jannik Sinner celebrates after winning a point.
Sinner going for Career Golden Masters

Following his victory over Medvedev, Sinner is now preparing to face Casper Ruud in the grand final in Rome. In addition to the opportunity to become the first Italian to win the tournament since Adriano Panatta lifted the title in 1976, the World No. 1 could also complete his Career Golden Masters—winning all nine Masters 1000 tournaments at least once.

The only player in tennis history to achieve this feat is Novak Djokovic, who remarkably did so on two separate occasions. He first completed the sweep in 2018 at the Cincinnati Masters, before repeating the achievement at the same tournament in 2020.

Jannik Sinner advanced to the Rome Open semifinals after defeating Andrey Rublev, and in the process, matched a unique Masters 1000 record held by Rafael Nadal.
Jannik Sinner continues to rewrite the history books during the Rome Open. Following his quarterfinal victory over Andrey Rublev, the Italian broke Novak Djokovic’s record for the longest winning streak in Masters 1000 history with 32 consecutive wins, while also equaling a unique record held by Rafael Nadal.

With his 6-2, 6-4 victory over Rublev, Sinner became only the second player to reach the semifinals at the first five Masters 1000 events of a season, a feat Nadal achieved in 2010 and 2011.

Sinner is now preparing to face Daniil Medvedev on Friday, May 15, as he hunts for a spot in the grand final, where he could potentially face Luciano Darderi or Casper Ruud. The World No. 1 is in pursuit of his first title in Rome, aiming to become the second Italian player to win the tournament since Adriano Panatta in 1976.

Sinner chasing Djokovic’s Career Golden Masters record

The World No. 1 is currently displaying an incredible level of play, having not lost a match since February 19, when he fell to Jakub Mensik in the Qatar Open final. Now, Sinner is moving closer to lifting his first Rome Masters title, which would allow him to continue setting new benchmarks.

Jannik Sinner celebrates after defeating Andrey Rublev. (Getty Images)

If the Italian is crowned champion, he would become the first player to win six Masters 1000 titles in a row since the format began in 1990. Furthermore, with a victory, Sinner would achieve the Career Golden Masters—winning all nine Masters 1000 tournaments at least once—becoming only the second player in history to accomplish this feat after Djokovic (2018, 2020).

Sinner doesn’t play for the records

Following the victory over Rublev, the Italian noted in his press conference that he does not play to break records, but simply to write his own history.

“I don’t play for records,” Sinner said, according to the ATP website. “I play for my own story. At the same time, it means a lot to me. But tomorrow is another day, a different opponent, different conditions… Emotionally, it takes a lot playing here at home. But at the same time, I definitely try to do my best. It was a good day today”.

Jannik Sinner continues to rewrite the history books, dispatching Andrey Rublev at the Italian Open to eclipse Novak Djokovic for the all-time Masters 1000 win-streak record.
Jannik Sinner’s masterclass at the Italian Open has once again shifted the conversation regarding his place in the history books. With a clinical 6-2, 6-4 quarterfinal victory over Andrey Rublev, the Italian sensation has officially eclipsed an all-time ATP Masters 1000 record previously held by Novak Djokovic.

Sinner’s triumph marks his 32nd consecutive win at the Masters level, breaking Djokovic’s storied record for the longest winning streak in the history of the format. Given his current torrid pace, the World No. 1 appears well-positioned to extend that historic mark even further as the tournament progresses.

The milestones don’t stop there. Sinner has now claimed 64 of his last 66 sets in Masters events, a staggering display of dominance. The Italian superstar continues to prove that regardless of the surface or the stakes, he is in a league of his own, rewriting the record books with every match.

Having recently surpassed Roger Federer’s personal best Masters streak, Sinner’s latest feat against Rublev serves as a definitive statement. This isn’t just a hot streak; it is a total takeover of the ATP circuit by a player firmly in his prime.

32 consecutive Masters 1000 match wins (All-time record)

18th career Masters semifinal at just 24 years old

50th overall career semifinal

2nd semifinal appearance in Rome

49–2 record over his last 51 matches

What’s next for Sinner in Rome?

With a spot in the semifinals secured, Sinner now awaits the winner of the clash between Casper Ruud and Luciano Darderi. Ruud has already weighed in on Sinner, offering high praise for the Italian’s evolving and nearly impenetrable baseline style.

While Jannik Sinner has faced his share of critiques regarding his stoic demeanor on court, fellow pro Casper Ruud recently chimed in on the conversation, noting that the world No. 1 often resembles a 'robot.'
Ahead of his Italian Open debut, Jannik Sinner has found himself at the center of a debate on the ATP Circuit. While some critics have labeled the Italian star’s clinical playing style as “robotic,” Casper Ruud was quick to defend the world No. 1 against those critiques.

“I see a lot of people saying he’s a bit too much of a robot. When you realize how difficult tennis is, if you can make it look robotic, it shows how good you are,” Ruud told the media as tournament play kicked off Sunday.

As Sinner continues to cement his place in tennis history—dominating across multiple surfaces—his peers are increasingly looking to his consistency as the gold standard for the modern game.

After matching Roger Federer’s mark for the longest Masters winning streak with his victory at the Madrid Open, Sinner remains the primary talking point of the tour. Now, all eyes are on the young phenom to see if he can carry this momentum into a high-stakes run at the French Open.

Ofner's reaction to that dropshot 🙄😂 pic.twitter.com/B2B1KlbFod
— jannik sinner files (@jannik_files) May 9, 2026

Ben Shelton joins the chorus of praise

Alongside Ruud, American star Ben Shelton also weighed in on Sinner’s recent form and the criticism surrounding his efficiency. “I’ve played him a lot when he’s been hot, and he’s caught fire again. Greatness is defined by what you do over a calendar year. The level he’s sustained tournament after tournament is what’s truly impressive,” Shelton remarked.

With both players vocal in their admiration, Sinner enters the upcoming draw as the undisputed main attraction and the heavy favorite to hoist the trophy on home soil.

Sinner reflects on home-court emotions

With the world No. 1 focused on a deep run in Rome, Sinner shared a rare personal moment regarding having his parents in the stands for his debut. “It’s very nice; I don’t get to see them as often as other players might. I’m very happy to share these moments with them. They’re wonderful parents,“ Sinner told reporters.

Jannik Sinner moved one step closer to the record books at the Rome Open by defeating Sebastian Ofner, equaling Roger Federer's longest career winning streak in Masters 1000 events.
Jannik Sinner remains steadfast in his quest for a maiden Rome Open title, defeating Sebastian Ofner 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the Round of 32. With this victory, the Italian world number one extended his dominant run across the ATP Masters 1000 circuit, matching an impressive record held by Roger Federer.

By securing the win over Ofner in the Round of 64, Sinner has officially matched Federer’s mark of 29 consecutive victories in Masters 1000 events. He will have the opportunity to surpass the Swiss legend on Monday, May 11, when he faces the winner of the match between Alexei Popyrin and Jakub Mensik.

Currently, Novak Djokovic holds the absolute historical record for the longest Masters winning streak, having secured 31 consecutive wins in 2011 and another 30 between 2014 and 2015. If Sinner reaches the semifinals in Rome, he could potentially stand alone at the top of that list.

Sinner aims for the Career Golden Masters

The Italian is on the verge of rewriting tennis history in the Eternal City. Beyond the winning streak, Sinner is chasing a milestone that would see him join the most elite company in the sport’s history. Should he claim the trophy this week, Sinner would achieve the Career Golden Masters—winning all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments at least once.

To date, Djokovic is the only player to have achieved this feat, doing so twice. The 24-time Grand Slam champion first completed the set in 2018 at Cincinnati and repeated the achievement at the same venue in 2020.

Ending a national drought

Sinner also carries the hopes of the home crowd as he looks to make Italian history. If he captures the title, he will become the first Italian man to win in Rome since Adriano Panatta in 1976, ending a half-century wait for a homegrown champion at the Foro Italico.

Jannik Sinner is gearing up for his debut at the Italian Open with an eye toward Roland Garros, but the Italian star made headlines off the court as he vented his frustrations to the media regarding the current state of tournament prize money.
Jannik Sinner is gearing up for his quest to secure another clay-court title this season. Following his first two trophies on the dirt, the world No. 1 has his sights set on the Italian Open, while anticipation continues to build for his run at Roland Garros.

Ahead of the season’s second Grand Slam, Sinner weighed in on the burgeoning controversy surrounding the Roland Garros prize money distribution. “It’s about respect. We don’t feel it. We’re disappointed. We give more than we receive, not just the top players, but all tennis players,” Sinner stated.

The backlash began last week after Roland Garros officials published the prize pool breakdown for the various rounds and for those who secured a spot in the tournament’s main draw.

While Sinner aims to chase Novak Djokovic’s Career Golden Masters record in Rome, the tennis world remains fixed on the developing labor tension. Sinner is far from the only high-profile star to voice a grievance regarding the French Open’s financial decisions.

Jannik Sinner celebrates a point vs Cameron Norrie.

Why is the Roland Garros prize money causing a stir?

A perfect storm of circumstances has created a rift in the tennis world, as players remain vocal about their dissatisfaction with the French Open organization’s plans for the upcoming edition.

Here are the five key factors fueling the fire:

The players are angry for several reasons: Roland Garros has increased the prize money by almost 9% compared to last year, but here’s what sparked the anger.

They consider it insufficient.

Nobody notified them or contacted them to discuss the potential increase.
The Slams only distribute 13-15% of their profits, which they consider unfair (the ATP distributes 22%).

They are demanding maternity, injury, and pension insurance, which they currently lack.

They want to sit down with the four Slams to negotiate this. They say the players are very angry at not being consulted on anything related to the distribution of Slam prize money, arguing that a 13-15% distribution like the current one is not enough (in other sports, it starts at 30%).

Sabalenka joins the fray

Another titan of the sport has entered the conversation. Aryna Sabalenka was even more blunt in her assessment of the Roland Garros pay structure, escalating the rhetoric significantly.

“I think at some point we will boycott it [Roland Garros], yeah. I feel like that’s going to be the only way to fight for our rights,“ Sabalenka told the media ahead of her debut at the Italian Open.

Jannik Sinner enters the Rome Open with a massive opportunity to complete the Career Golden Masters and match an incredible milestone held by Novak Djokovic.
Jannik Sinner was crowned champion at the Madrid Open after defeating Alexander Zverev in the final, leaving him just one step away from equaling a towering record held by Novak Djokovic at the Masters 1000 level.

If the World No. 1 lifts the trophy at the Rome Open, he will achieve the Career Golden Masters—winning all nine Masters 1000 tournaments at least once—joining Djokovic as the only players in history to accomplish the feat.

The key distinction remains that the Serbian legend has done it twice. The 24-time Grand Slam champion first completed the set in 2018 at the Cincinnati Masters, before repeating the achievement at the same tournament in 2020.

Djokovic’s unmatchable Masters record

When it comes to the Masters 1000 circuit, Djokovic stands alone. The Serb has dominated these events, holding the record for the most titles with 40 trophies, a benchmark that currently seems untouchable.

Novak Djokovic with the 2023 Paris Masters 1000 trophy. (Getty Images)

Following the Serbian in the record books are Rafael Nadal (36 titles), Roger Federer (28 titles), Andre Agassi (17 titles), and Andy Murray (14 titles). While the Italian currently has nine Masters trophies in his cabinet, he has the unique chance to match a specific record that no one besides Djokovic has been able to touch.

Sinner breaks Djokovic and Nadal’s streak

In his pursuit of the Career Golden Masters, Sinner has already snatched a record from the hands of both Djokovic and Nadal. With his victory at the Madrid Open, the Italian became the first player in history to win five consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments.

The previous record held by both legends was four consecutive titles. However, a dominant run through Paris (2025), Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, and now Madrid has allowed Sinner to set a new standard on the ATP Tour.

Jannik Sinner faces Alexander Zverev in the Madrid Open final with a chance to secure a historic milestone in the Open Era.
Jannik Sinner has a golden opportunity to make tennis history when he faces Alexander Zverev on Sunday, May 3, in the Madrid Masters final. If the Italian secures the title in the Spanish capital, he will become the first player in ATP Masters 1000 history (since the series began in 1990) to win five consecutive titles.

The current record stands at four consecutive Masters 1000 trophies, a feat Sinner currently shares with Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. The Serbian legend achieved this on three separate occasions, while the Spaniard reached the mark in 2013.

The World No. 1 joined this elite company by sweeping the first three Masters 1000 tournaments of this season, following a win in the final one of 2025. His current streak includes titles in Paris (2025), Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo (2026).

Sinner nearing Career Golden Masters

Should he lift the trophy in Madrid, Sinner will also move one step closer to becoming just the second player in history to complete the Career Golden Masters—winning all nine Masters 1000 tournaments at least once.

If he defeats Zverev, the Italian would only need a victory at the Rome Masters to join Djokovic as the only players to achieve this feat. The Serbian legend first completed the set in 2018 and incredibly repeated the achievement in 2022.

Sinner’s dominance in the ATP Rankings

The World No. 1 is also in a prime position to extend his lead over Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP Rankings. Entering Madrid with no points to defend, Sinner knew he could only gain ground with zero risk of losing points.

By reaching the final, he has already secured 650 points, which could rise to 1,000 with a victory on Sunday. Furthermore, with Alcaraz sidelined for the upcoming Rome Masters and Roland Garros due to injury, Sinner is poised to vastly increase the numerical cushion between himself and his Spanish rival.
