Guillermo Ochoa made his fourth World Cup appearance, with Mexico manager Javier Aguirre acknowledging that the veteran's emotional tribute eclipsed the 3-0 victory over Czechia.
Javier Aguirre paid tribute to Guillermo Ochoa by subbing him on against Czechia, with the Mexico manager admitting that the veteran goalkeeper’s historic World Cup milestone eclipsed the 3-0 victory itself.

With the game comfortably at 2-0, Aguirre made a highly anticipated and emotional substitution for the national team, replacing Raul Rangel with Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa. With this symbolic gesture, the legendary shot-stopper took the pitch in his fourth different World Cup tournament with playing minutes, a milestone the manager believes deserves immense recognition.

“The moment Guillermo Ochoa stepped onto the pitch, it overshadowed everything else,” Aguirre told TV Azteca after the match. “He is a world-class legend, and I am incredibly proud of him.”

Guillermo Ochoa thankful for the tribute

While Mexico awaits their exact opponent for the Round of 32, the post-game spotlight shifted entirely to Ochoa. His teammates swarmed him on the pitch to celebrate the historic moment, leaving the veteran deeply grateful for the gesture.

“It was even better than I dreamed; everything just fell into place,” Ochoa said. “At the beginning, you are always fighting to get on the pitch. Javier makes the decisions, and this time it was my turn to support from the sidelines. But things aligned perfectly—the result, the setting—and I got my chance to play.“

Mexico now shifts its focus entirely to the Round of 32, with its knockout rival set to be finalized on Friday. For that high-stakes elimination matchup, Raul Rangel is expected to return to the starting XI and reclaim his spot between the posts, barring any unexpected tactical changes from the Chivas shot-stopper.

Is Guillermo Ochoa retiring after the 2026 World Cup?

Guillermo Ochoa is 40 years old and has stated that this will be his final World Cup. However, he has also hinted at the improbable possibility of one last international run, despite the fact that he will be 44 years old by the time the 2030 edition arrives.

While Ochoa is not currently expected to retire from club or international duty immediately following the 2026 World Cup, his long-term future may ultimately depend on how this tournament unfolds for both Mexico and himself.

Javier Aguirre was not happy following Mexico's victory against South Korea and securing qualification to the next round of the 2026 World Cup.
Mexico punched their ticket to the 2026 World Cup knockout stages with a gritty 1-0 victory over South Korea on Matchday 2. The win officially locks up the top spot in Group A standings for El Tri, guaranteeing them a place in the Round of 32. However, despite securing the milestone on home soil, manager Javier Aguirre left the pitch far from satisfied with his team’s execution.

Speaking to Telemundo post-match, Aguirre offered a blunt assessment of his squad’s current form, emphasizing that El Tri still has plenty of homework to do before the single-elimination bracket begins. “We know each other very well,” Aguirre said regarding South Korea. “There was a lot of pressure from both sides, very little space given, and it ultimately came down to a single mistake that tipped the scale in our favor.”

“Yes, we’re in a good position. But it wasn’t a great game; our opponent didn’t let us do much,” Aguirre admitted. “We got the goal off an error and had two or three other chances, but that’s it.” Rather than celebrating the mathematical qualification, Aguirre deflected questions about his overall satisfaction with the result, choosing instead to redirect the credit to the roaring home crowd.

Rangel believes Mexico can go toe-to-toe

Despite Aguirre‘s visible frustration on the touchline, the mood among the players remains highly confident. Goalkeeper Cesar Rangel, whose crucial, acrobatic saves preserved the clean sheet, insisted that Mexico fears no one in this tournament.

— Telemundo Deportes (@TelemundoSports) June 19, 2026

“I’ve said it before and I’ll stand by it: we are ready to go toe-to-toe against any national team in the world,” Rangel stated post-match. While Mexico’s performances against both South Africa and South Korea weren’t exactly dominant offensive masterclasses, history and logistics favor El Tri. They are a program known for raising their ceiling on the world stage, and this time around, they possess the ultimate wild card: the home-field advantage.

What’s next for Mexico?

With the top spot in Group A already mathematically wrapped up, Mexico’s upcoming match against Czechia on June 24 at 9:00 PM (ET) serves as a luxury tactical tune-up. The match will mark El Tri’s highly anticipated return to Mexico City Stadium.

Thanks to clinching the top seed early, Mexico’s path forward is taking shape: In the Round of 32, Mexico will stay at Mexico City Stadium to face a third-placed finisher from either Group C, E, F, H, or I.

And, in the Round of 16 path, if El Tri survives the Round of 32, the tournament bracket dictates it would return to the capital yet again for the Round of 16—keeping their hometown crowd behind them for the foreseeable future.

Veteran manager Javier Aguirre returns to lead Mexico for a historic third time at the 2026 World Cup. Known as 'El Vasco,' the tactical mastermind faces immense pressure to utilize his trademark grit and guide the host nation past its traditional limits on home soil.
Javier Aguirre wasn’t expected to be the man on the touchline for the 2026 FIFA World Cup just a few years ago. Yet the veteran tactician now finds himself at the center of one of the most high-pressure jobs in global soccer, leading the Mexican national team into a historic home tournament.

He spent much of his career establishing himself as the most successful Mexican manager in European club history, building a reputation for tactical discipline, intense motivation, and an ability to turn struggling teams around. Affectionately known as ‘El Vasco,’ his booming voice and passionate demeanor are instantly recognizable to fans worldwide.

Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, however, his role transcends mere tactics. Appointed to stabilize the national team after a turbulent period, Aguirre carries the hopes of an entire nation.

How old is Javier Aguirre?

Javier Aguirre is 67 years old. The veteran coach was born on December 1, 1958, in Mexico City. He belongs to a generation of iconic Mexican soccer figures, having successfully transitioned from a solid playing career as a midfielder into an internationally renowned manager.

Javier Aguirre, manager of Mexico

How tall is Javier Aguirre?

Javier Aguirre stands 5-foot-8 (1.73 meters) tall. During his playing days, he combined intelligence and a fierce competitive spirit on the pitch—qualities that translated seamlessly into his demanding, energetic, and highly expressive managerial style on the touchline.

What are Javier Aguirre’s social media accounts?

Unlike many modern coaches and players, Javier Aguirre is famously absent from social media. He does not maintain public accounts on platforms like Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), or TikTok.

‘El Vasco’ prefers to keep his focus strictly on the game and maintains a traditional, low-profile approach to his personal life. Instead of viral social media posts, he lets his work on the pitch and his notoriously entertaining, unfiltered press conferences do the talking.

Is Javier Aguirre single?

No, Javier Aguirre is not single. The Mexican manager has been married to his wife, Silvia Pelaez, for several decades. Together, they have built a strong family foundation, raising three sons: Ander, Mikel, and Inaki.

Despite the intense spotlight that comes with managing high-profile clubs in Spain and the Mexican national team, Aguirre and his wife have successfully kept their family life private, avoiding the tabloids and focusing entirely on his soccer career.

When did Javier Aguirre start his coaching career?

Javier Aguirre started his coaching career in 1996 with Atlante, the same club where he began his professional playing days. Before taking the head job, he gained valuable experience as an assistant coach for the Mexican national team during the 1994 World Cup under Miguel Mejia Baron.

His true breakthrough as a manager came shortly after when he took over Pachuca in 1998. He led the club to its first-ever Liga MX championship during the 1999 Invierno tournament, establishing himself as one of Mexico’s most promising tactical minds and opening the door for future international opportunities.

Which teams has Javier Aguirre coached?

Javier Aguirre has an extensive managerial resume, having coached clubs across multiple continents: Atlante, Pachuca, Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Al-Wahda, Leganes, Monterrey, and RCD Mallorca.

On the international stage, he has managed the national teams of Japan, Egypt, and Mexico. Crucially, he is currently in his third stint as the head coach of El Tri, having previously led the team during the 2002 and 2010 World Cup cycles.

Will Javier Aguirre be at the 2026 World Cup?

Yes, Javier Aguirre will manage Mexico at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. ‘El Vasco’ was appointed as the head coach in 2024, replacing Jaime Lozano, with the specific mission of preparing the squad for the immense pressure of a home tournament.

With Mexico automatically qualifying as a co-host alongside the United States and Canada, Aguirre is tasked with guiding El Tricolor beyond the Round of 16—a historic hurdle the nation is desperate to clear in front of its passionate home fans.

Who are the most experienced coaches at the 2026 World Cup?

Didier Deschamps, Carlo Ancelotti, Marcelo Bielsa and Javier Aguirre are among the most experienced coaches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Between them, they have accumulated decades of managerial experience.

Marcelo Bielsa, Head Coach of Uruguay looks on prior to the South American Qualifier match in 2024 (Source: Ernesto Ryan/Getty Images)

France coach Didier Deschamps stands out as one of the tournament’s most accomplished managers. Since taking charge of Les Bleus in 2012, he has guided the team to the 2018 FIFA World Cup title, the 2022 World Cup final and the 2021 UEFA Nations League trophy.

The 2026 tournament will be his fourth World Cup as France manager and his final competition before stepping down. He is also on the verge of breaking the record for the most matches coached at the World Cup.

Uruguay boss Marcelo Bielsa is another veteran of international football. The Argentine previously managed Argentina at the 2002 World Cup and Chile at the 2010 edition before returning to the tournament with Uruguay in 2026.

Beyond his World Cup appearances, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential tactical minds of the modern era, having inspired coaches such as Pep Guardiola, Mauricio Pochettino and Diego Simeone.

Mexico’s Javier Aguirre also belongs in this group. The 67-year-old has already coached El Tri at the 2002 and 2010 World Cups and is returning for a third stint on the global stage. His longevity and experience make him one of the most seasoned managers in the competition.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s Carlo Ancelotti arrives with arguably the most impressive club résumé in football history. Although 2026 is his first World Cup as a head coach, the Italian has won five UEFA Champions League titles and league championships.

Which coaches are making their World Cup debut in 2026?

Mauricio Pochettino (United States), Jamal Sellami (Jordan), Fabio Cannavaro (Uzbekistan), Sebastien Desabre (DR Congo), Carlo Ancelotti (Barazil), Julian Nagelsmann (Germany) and Luis de la Fuente (Spain) are the most notable coaches who will manage at a FIFA World Cup for the first time in 2026.

While each arrives with a very different background, all four will experience the tournament from the touchline for the first time when the competition kicks off across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The expanded 48-team format has created opportunities for several managers to reach the tournament for the first time. In many cases, those debuting coaches are leading nations making history themselves.

Who is the highest-profile coach at the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

Carlo Ancelotti is widely regarded as the highest-profile coach at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Brazil manager arrives in North America with a résumé unmatched by any other coach in the tournament.

Carlo Ancelotti attends to the media during a press conference of the Brazilian national soccer team (Source: Buda Mendes/Getty Images)

His appointment by Brazil was one of the most significant managerial moves in intereputation was built during legendary spells with AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

No manager has won more Champions League titles, and few have managed as many of the game’s biggest stars. From Paolo Maldini and Andrea Pirlo to Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior, he has consistently succeeded at the highest level of club soccer for more than two decades.

He is far from the only superstar on the touchline. France’s Didier Deschamps enters the tournament as one of the most successful international managers of the modern era.

He won the 2018 World Cup, reached the 2022 final and will be coaching in his fourth and final World Cup before stepping down after nearly 15 years in charge of Les Bleus. England manager Thomas Tuchel is another elite figure.

Lionel Scaloni also deserves a place in the conversation. He enters as the defending World Cup champion after guiding Argentina to glory in Qatar 2022 and building one of the most successful national-team projects of the decade.

Mexico will host a World Cup for the third time, and for manager Javier Aguirre, it's a golden opportunity for the Tri to make a statement.
While the overall sentiment surrounding the Mexico national team is not great, manager Javier Aguirre is dreaming about doing stuff never done before for the Tri. He basically said the sky is the limit.

Speaking to Mexican legend Cuauthemoc Blanco, Aguirre said, “When I saw the calendar, I thought ‘it’s right there for the taking, can’t let it slip away.’ That’s what I’m telling my players. England were champions at home and never again. Playing at home is priceless.”

Now, comparing Mexico, whose best result ever in a World Cup is the quarterfinals stage, to England, the nation were soccer was invented, it’s a huge stretch. Not only that, but Mexico have been the hosts before, and they haven’t won it. Still, for the manager, the confidence is sky-high.

Are Mexico good under Javier Aguirre?

Since getting appointed in 2024, Aguirre has managed 27 games, won 15, eight draws, and four losses. That’s an average of 1.96 points per matches. It’s not that inspiring for the host nation to be quite honest.

Following a solid 2-0 victory over Ghana, Javier Aguirre announced that six players from Mexico's preliminary 2026 World Cup list will return home and will not be part of the final roster.
Mexico have secured a solid 2-0 win over Ghana on Friday, but it was not all good news for the squad. Immediately after the match concluded, manager Javier Aguirre informed six players that they would not be making the final 2026 World Cup roster.

The Estadio Cuauhtemoc played host to Mexico in a crucial preparatory duel. El Tri managed to secure a commanding victory over an African side that serves as a perfect tactical benchmark ahead of their World Cup opener against South Africa.

While fans were thrilled by the performance, six players had little reason to celebrate. During the post-game press conference, Javier Aguirre officially announced the first wave of cuts, confirming that the following individuals will leave the camp:

Oscar Garcia (Leon / Goalkeeper)

Denzell Garcia (Juarez / Midfielder)

Luis Gabriel Rey (Puebla / Defender)

Eduardo Aguila (Atletico San Luis / Defender)

Isaias Violante (America / Forward)

Iker Fimbres (Monterrey / Midfielder)

Potential last-minute roster changes spark club conflicts

A few weeks ago, Mexico found themselves in a scheduling conflict with Liga MX clubs over international call-ups. Initially, the national team were expected to proceed without players whose clubs remained active in the domestic playoffs, but the landscape has quickly shifted.

With Pumas and Cruz Azul currently facing off in the Clausura 2026 final, several unlisted Mexican standouts from both squads are making a compelling late-season case for World Cup inclusion. Aguirre has kept a close eye on the final series and appears entirely open to shaking up his selection.

Jordan Carrillo of Pumas.

Carlos Rodriguez (Cruz Azul) and Jordan Carrillo (Pumas UNAM) are the primary names generating late buzz. Following their spectacular playoff campaigns, reports suggest that Aguirre is seriously considering whether their current form could provide a vital boost to the World Cup roster.

However, executing these additions could spark a major dispute with Chivas. The Guadalajara-based club willingly cooperative by lending five players to the national team early—sacrificing key talent during their own playoff push. If Rodriguez and Carrillo receive last-minute call-ups after playing through the domestic final, Guadalajara will undoubtedly question why they were forced to compromise their squad so early.

Aguirre now faces a delicate balancing act: avoid political friction with Chivas by leaving Rodriguez and Carrillo out, or prioritize his on-field options by selecting them, inevitably triggering immediate tension between Guadalajara and the Mexican Football Federation.

With only 36 days remaining until Mexico's debut in the 2026 FIFA World Cup against South Africa, a serious internal crisis has erupted between the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) and Liga MX clubs.
A serious conflict has emerged for Mexico. With only 36 days to go before the 2026 FIFA World Cup kickoff, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) and Liga MX clubs are locked in a dispute that could significantly impact the National Team’s hopes.

On Tuesday night, reports emerged that Toluca would have Alexis Vega and Jesus Gallardo back for their Concacaf Champions Cup match against LAFC. This development sparked a firestorm because Mexico, who recently drew 1-1 with Belgium, had already called up several Liga MX players, including Vega and Gallardo, for World Cup preparations. While teams initially agreed to release players despite the ongoing Liga MX Playoffs, Toluca’s sudden ability to reclaim their stars for a specific match triggered a heated dispute among other club owners.

Chivas owner Amaury Vergara responded by indicating that his players, who were scheduled to report to the National Team on Wednesday, should also be allowed back to face Tigres in the Leg 2 quarterfinal on Saturday, calling them immediately back to Guadalajara. Just hours later, the Mexican National Team issued a stern ultimatum: if any called-up players do not report to the training camp by Wednesday at 10:00 PM (ET), they will be officially excluded from the World Cup roster.

We have reached the #ÚltimaEscala… 🛬

Featuring only players from the Mexican league, these are the call-ups selected by Javier Aguirre for the training camp beginning this May 6th.

The list includes:
– 12 players who, based on the agreement with LIGA MX clubs, are being… pic.twitter.com/KFv6HQkagA
— Mexican National Team (@miseleccionmxEN) April 28, 2026

Toluca found a loophole in the agreement

Initially, the FMF established a list of Liga MX players required for the final preparation phase before the World Cup. El Tricolor indicated that while many were called to camp, not all would make the final cut, creating tension regarding which players were truly essential. Liga MX clubs that agreed to release players mid-Playoffs did so under the understanding that those players were virtually guaranteed a spot on the final list; otherwise, losing them during a title run would be senseless.

However, Toluca exploited a specific loophole in the paperwork. While the agreement between Liga MX and the FMF focused on player availability for the domestic Playoffs, Toluca are currently competing in both the Liguilla and the Concacaf Champions Cup. Toluca successfully argued for the return of Vega and Gallardo specifically for the international match against LAFC, rather than their local series against Pachuca, a distinction that caught the FMF off guard.

This technicality has made the situation incredibly complicated. Chivas, currently releasing five players to the National Team, argue they should have the same right to use their stars against Tigres. However, the FMF views the situations differently because Toluca refrained from using Vega or Gallardo in their domestic quarterfinal against Pachuca, whereas Chivas are requesting them for Liga MX play.

With only hours remaining before the 10:00 PM deadline, the Chivas players called to the National Team were reportedly still in Guadalajara as of Wednesday morning. While they could theoretically travel to report to Javier Aguirre’s camp before the cutoff, the tension is high. It remains to be seen if Aguirre will follow through on his threat to drop anyone who misses the deadline from the World Cup squad.

An opportunity opens for Guillermo Ochoa

Jose Raul “Tala” Rangel is currently the frontrunner to be Mexico’s starting goalkeeper in the World Cup. The problem is that Rangel is one of the five Chivas players currently in Guadalajara. If he fails to arrive at the National Team concentration by Wednesday night, he risks being left out of the tournament entirely.

Guillermo Ochoa of Mexico

If Rangel is excluded, a massive opportunity emerges for Guillermo Ochoa. The veteran, who is already set to appear in a record-breaking sixth World Cup, would find a much easier path to the final roster. Without Rangel in the picture, Memo could move from a mentor role back into the conversation for the starting spot on June 11.

19-year-old Seattle Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas has been called up by Javier Aguirre, much to the dismay of Mexican media.
The Mexican media is not kind to their national team, EVER. It seems like a business for El Tri to be in some kind of trouble or crisis. The problem is that, for once, Mexican media has a lot to be angry about: the Mexican national team has hit rock bottom.

So poor is the situation that the federation had to turn to Javier Aguirre for his third stint as national team head coach. El Vasco has since won one match and drawn another as he hopes to right the sinking ship that is Mexico.

Aguirre has already made some harsh decisions; one is calling up Monterrey’s nationalized Argentine Germán Berterame. The other is the Mexican-American Obed Vargas of the Seattle Sounders.

Is the Loss of Obed Vargas Any Concern for USMNT?

Obed Vargas plays as a midfielder, but Aguirre has listed the 19-year-old as a defender. Vargas once had a promising start to his young career, impressing many with the Seattle Sounders. While the dual national eventually settled into his role at the Rave Green, he has been nothing more than a steady performer, playing in 83 matches for the club.

Ricardo Galindo of Pumas and Obed Vargas #73 of Seattle Sounders battle for the ball in the second half during 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Final Leg 2 at Lumen Field on May 04, 2022 in Seattle, Washington.
Aguirre will likely hope to use Vargas possibly as a full-back, although he has been playing centrally in midfield for the Sounders. On ESPN in Mexico, one of the pundits stated that he was not happy with Obed’s call-up due to “not knowing him” and not accepting “that the national team be used to get to know players (dual nationals) and how they will interact in the national team environment.”

“I don’t know him and I don’t like him”.

Obed Vargas will face many problems in the coming weeks.

Take a look at a few of the media reactions to the 19 year old Alaskan native being called up to the Mexican National Team. pic.twitter.com/6DooFXHIei
— herculez gomez (@herculezg) October 1, 2024

While many USMNT fans initially had concerns about losing Obed Vargas, given the depth at full-back, it seems doubtful that Vargas was going to receive a USMNT call-up anytime soon.
