Following the bye, the schedule becomes significantly tougher. The Giants will face the Eagles, Commanders, Jaguars, Colts, 49ers, Seahawks, Browns, Lions, Cowboys, and Eagles again to close the regular season.

The early portion of the calendar could therefore become critical for John Harbaugh’s team. If the Giants fail to take advantage of a relatively manageable opening stretch, the second half of the season could quickly become overwhelming given the level of competition waiting later in the year.

For Jaxson Dart, the schedule also creates a fascinating opportunity. Strong performances early in the season could immediately accelerate confidence around the quarterback and completely change expectations surrounding the Giants’ future.

Although the Giants remain optimistic about his recovery timeline, the second surgery confirmed in a previous report by Dan Duggan clearly adds another layer of concern to a situation that already required careful management.

Malik Nabers’ absence would be massive blow for Giants offense

The Giants did spend much of the offseason preparing additional depth at wide receiver. During free agency, they added names like Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin III, while the front office also selected Malachi Fields during the 2026 NFL Draft.

Those moves now look even more important considering the uncertainty surrounding Nabers. Still, replacing the impact of the young WR would be nearly impossible for New York’s offense.

Nabers was expected to become the centerpiece of the offense and one of the primary weapons for quarterback Jaxson Dart during his second NFL season. Losing him, even temporarily, would represent a devastating and unexpected setback for an offense already entering a critical transition period.

For now, the Giants continue hoping Nabers can return in time for Week 1. But after the latest medical update, it is clear they will take an extremely cautious approach with one of the franchise’s most important players.

Mauigoa, selected with the No. 10 overall pick, faced criticism from parts of the fanbase and even from star receiver Malik Nabers, who preferred the Giants select safety Caleb Downs instead. Despite the outside noise, Dart made it clear during an interview with Jordan Raanan that he is thrilled to have Mauigoa protecting him moving forward.

“That’s my boy. I can’t wait to go out and play with him. Him just already coming in, his attention to detail, his maturity, it’s very prevalent with the way that he goes around his business. The way that he’s going to be able to do his job at an extremely high level.”

Francis Mauigoa already embracing protector role for Jaxson Dart

Francis Mauigoa also made headlines on draft night after saying he was ready to die in order to protect Jaxson Dart on the field. That mentality immediately resonated with the quarterback, who appreciated hearing that level of commitment from his teammate.

“I was fired up hearing what he said on draft night. That goes the same from me. I play with everything I got for my teammates each time I’m out there on the field. I know he’s going to do the exact same thing.”

“I just think they are very versatile (offense). I think it starts there and the other thing is just can’t wait for all my boys to be back healthy. I’m excited for the pieces that we brought in, they’re gonna help us a ton. We’re gonna just be a physical, violent team,” the quarterback told ESPN‘s Jordan Raanan.

During his nearly two decades at the helm of the Baltimore Ravens, Harbaugh has valued physical play as one of his key traits. The recent picks in the latest draft are aligned with this style of play.

“That’s all we hear every single day from him (Harbaugh). That’s the style he wants us to play at. I just think that what he wants to do is what everybody on this team wants to be about. We are hungry to win. I couldn’t think for a better coach to play for.”

He also added: “I’m very happy with the approach we’ve had. But we’re going to win the Super Bowl. I hope you don’t take that as counting my chickens before they hatch, but what else should I say? I want us to win a Super Bowl, and we can do it.“

“The process of a rookie quarterback is slow,” Allegre told Bolavip US. “I think they made the right decision giving Russell Wilson the chance. Russell Wilson didn’t have a great performance in the games he played, and they ended up making the transition to Jaxson Dart. The results were not the best; it was a team that, I think, lost five games that they entered the last quarter winning by 10 points or more. But it is difficult to put in a rookie QB immediately.”

Jaxson Dart needs to grow, and John Harbaugh will help him

Last year, prior to the 2025 NFL Draft, Allegre suggested that neither Cam Ward nor Shedeur Sanders were the right options for the Giants. He was proven correct as the club prioritized defense with Abdul Carter before later securing Jaxson Dart.

“I never thought Shedeur Sanders was an option,” the two-time Super Bowl champion said. “Cam Ward was obviously not available when they ended up choosing. So, I believe it was the right call to come back and select Jaxson Dart late in the draft. That option was not available when we talked last year. They made the trade with Houston, giving up a second and a third, I think. Under those circumstances, I think it was an excellent decision.”

Dart had a promising rookie season in 2025, initially starting as QB2 behind Russell Wilson. He eventually took over the starting role—a move Allegre considers logical and views with great optimism.

“Little by little, they realized that Russell Wilson no longer had the level or the capacity to move the team forward, and that is when they made the transition to Jaxson Dart,” Allegre told Bolavip US. “So, I wouldn’t blame the Giants’ process last season too much. At the end of the day, finishing the season with only four wins is not ideal, but they had already established who was going to be their quarterback and also found a running back.”

While Dart endured a losing record in his first year, he showed flashes of elite talent. As a solid dual-threat quarterback, he now has a head coach in John Harbaugh who specializes in exploiting those exact qualities. “John Harbaugh knows how to handle quarterbacks who have the tendency to take risks when they don’t need to—as some may say, trying to gain that last yard at the cost of their health,” Raul Allegre stated. “Jaxson Dart has made statements; I think he is a kid with a lot of confidence and that certain arrogance that quarterbacks should have, but he reached a point of irresponsibility by saying in a press conference that it was his style and he wouldn’t change it.

“As the saying in the NFL goes: availability is the best ability. If you are not available—if you are in the concussion protocol or dealing with a knee injury, etc.—and you can’t play for two or three games, then you are costing your team the best chance of winning.”

The Giants missed a key opportunity in the 2026 NFL Draft

Allegre spoke with Bolavip US just after the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. While the Giants selected Arvell Reese (No. 5) and Francis Mauigoa (No. 10), these were not the players the former kicker would have prioritized.

The Giants aimed to fill the void left by Dexter Lawrence with Arvell Reese. However, Allegre believes they should have targeted Caleb Downs, whom he regarded as the premier defensive player in this class.

“The question here is whether the team is in a better position now,” Allegre said. “Obviously, the fifth pick was already theirs, and they ended up going for Arvell Reese. Personally, the player I liked the most was Caleb Downs, and I debated whether or not to take him twice. He ended up going to Dallas, which is not positive at all for Giants fans.”

At the same time, Allegre expressed concern regarding Francis Mauigoa’s health. The rookie offensive lineman is currently dealing with a herniated disc in his back—a diagnosis that surprised the former kicker, who noted the rarity and severity of such an injury for a player so young.

“Unfortunately, he [Mauigoa] arrives at the draft with a back issue that is said to need surgery; I don’t know which type or if he can recover without it,” Allegre stated. “But the fact that he has been diagnosed with back problems at the age of 20—I mean, 20! I developed back problems at 33. To me, it seems like a tremendous risk.”

Will the Giants achieve success in 2026?

Expectations for the Giants have shifted with Harbaugh’s arrival and Dart’s status as the established QB1. With the Eagles, Commanders, and Cowboys losing key personnel and undergoing staff changes, Allegre believes the Giants have a prime opportunity to compete in 2026.

One remaining uncertainty is the kicker position. Last season, the Giants cycled through five different players at the position where Allegre once shined. However, with the arrival of Jason Sanders, the Mexican legend believes these struggles for the Giants will finally be resolved.

“Last season (2024), Jason Sanders went 7-of-7 with Miami (20-29 yards); he made all of his 40-yard field goals,” Allegre said. “I believe Jason Sanders will solve all the problems the Giants have had at the kicker position, provided he recovers his form and stays healthy—which was also Graham Gano’s problem.”

The Bill Belichick Hall of Fame controversy

In a move that shocked the football world, Bill Belichick did not make the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility this past January. Allegre, who considers Belichick a living legend, expressed deep disappointment at the snub.

Allegre maintains that Belichick and Bill Parcells are the two greatest coaches in NFL history. He finds Belichick’s exclusion comparable to the delays Parcells faced, but he warns that the Hall of Fame’s credibility is at stake.

“It diminished the credibility of the Hall of Fame process, but we all know how it is—there are 50 voters, and many are not directly involved in football; most of them are journalists,” Allegre added. “They have their preferences, their favorites, and their biases, and unfortunately, that had an influence. The Hall of Fame is not complete without Bill Belichick as a member, no matter what happened.”

Regarding future eligibility, Allegre suggested that if the Hall of Fame snubs Tom Brady in 2028, the institution would lose all remaining credibility. However, given his relationship with Belichick, it remains to be seen if the HoF uses the same criteria for the quarterback.

However, Nabers made it known from the first interaction, that the rookie will be held accountable. Nabers should rest assured, though, as Mauigoa promised to protect Dart at all costs.

NY Giants’ Day 1 recap

The Giants entered the 2026 NFL Draft among the teams that owned several first-round selections. Thus, they had lots of eyes fixed on him. Despite the loud buzz around their picks, the Giants didn’t make any trades during the first round of the NFL Draft.

New York drafted linebacker out of Ohio State Arvell Reese with their first selection (No. 5 overall). The Giants followed that selection with Francis Mauigoa, offensive tackle out of the University of Miami, at No. 10.

As soon as that pick was in, the Dallas Cowboys moved up to select Caleb Downs with the 11th pick. If he turns out to be as good as advertised, fans will look back on this NFL Draft moment every time New York and Dallas meet.

Day 1 is in the books

As Day 1 of the 2026 NFL Draft comes to an end, the Giants get ready to do it all over again on Friday and Saturday. The New York Giants have six picks left: No. 37, 105, 145, 186, 192, and 193 overall.

Though Nabers expressed his frustration at several of the Giants’ decisions, the jury is still out on whether this draft was a success or not. In fact, it’s way too early to tell. Time and again, selections that left fans puzzled on draft night turned out to be great players. Thus, any analysis made tonight could turn futile when the 2026 NFL season kicks off in September.

After being selected, he was asked about what he would do for Jackson Dart and said that he was ready to give everything for him. “I’m ready to die for you, man.” He will be part of the offensive line, and that hunger to give everything was evident.

A 3-year starter, Mauigoa played every game and allowed the lowest pressure rate among all FBS tackles in 2025. According to Ari Meirov, he is likely to be an RG with the Giants.

Doubts about the Giants picks

The Giants’ moves during the draft have been questioned, and there is something that Nabers is saying on behalf of the fans, first disagreeing with the drafting of Arvell Reese after missing out on Jeremiyah Love.

And then for passing on Caleb Downs and drafting Francis Mauigoa, basically not being satisfied with any of the decisions the front office has made, according to the team’s needs.

And he directly criticized the offensive lineman coming from Miami, “I would rather get Downs than play against Downs, that’s all I’m saying,” Nabers said during his live reaction on Bleacher Report. “I understand Jaxson [Dart] did mention he wanted offensive linemen in this draft.”

Nabers simply does not see where Mauigoa would fit into the lineup upon arrival. “Is [Mauigoa] going to play inside? He has to play guard, but a lot of his film in Miami wasn’t at guard,” Nabers stated. “We did the same thing when we drafted Evan Neal. Caleb Downs was available. I’m not saying we don’t need a guard, but I think we could have gotten that probably later. We could have taken a playmaker now.”
