“This ain’t no f*** Shaq and Kobe. There’s no beef,” Tatum told reporters, clearing the air about their relationship despite fans continuing to dissect the behind-the-scenes drama on social media.

Tatum looked much sharper in Boston’s second game of the season, raising expectations for his solo leadership as the Celtics navigate their first campaign without Brown by his side.

While Tatum adjusts to carrying the mantle alone in Boston, Brown is settling into his new role in Philadelphia. The Sixers have their sights set on a championship run behind LeBron James, who recently reached another career milestone against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Tatum looks increasingly comfortable in his return

Rather than forcing plays or barreling into crowded lanes to prove his burst is back, Tatum is letting the game come to him. His shot creation looks fluid once again: he is decisively planting into his trademark step-backs, elevating smoothly on mid-range pull-ups, and driving without the hesitation that often follows an extended lower-body rehab.

That comfort extends to his playmaking. Tatum isn’t measuring his impact purely in the box score; he is manipulating defensive rotations, using his length to read passing lanes over double-teams, and whipping crisp skip passes to shooters in rhythm.

When defenses collapse on him, he seamlessly shifts into a facilitator, demonstrating complete trust in head coach Joe Mazzulla’s spacing principles and his teammates’ timing.

Most telling is his aggression late in games. In crunch time, Tatum is actively hunting contact, attacking the rim with authority, and finishing through traffic without a second thought.

Key takeaways

• Jayson Tatum addressed Jaylen Brown’s trade to the Philadelphia 76ers after Boston’s game.
• “There’s no beef,” Jayson Tatum stated, denying any feud with Jaylen Brown.
• LeBron James reached a career milestone against the Cleveland Cavaliers for Philadelphia.

Tatum delivered a blunt, six-word response upon learning Brown was dealt to an Atlantic Division rival. “You traded him down the street?” Tatum asked during an appearance on YouTube’s The Sit Down podcast.

Although Tatum seemed shocked by Brown’s move to Philadelphia 76ers, NBA fans on social media raised eyebrows at the clip. Commentary quickly flooded the internet, with fans pointing out: “He wasn’t mad they traded him, just mad it was to Philly,” “First words were ‘where’ and not ‘why’, he wanted him gone,” and “Yeah, he wanted him traded, just not that close.”

While Brown spoke publicly about his departure and reflected warmly on his years in Boston, fans continue to speculate whether behind-the-scenes friction between the two stars ultimately accelerated the trade.

What did the Celtics lose without Brown on the roster?

Without Jaylen Brown, the Celtics lose their premier rim-pressurer, secondary shot creator, and most dependable multi-positional wing defender. Brown consistently embraced the toughest defensive assignments against elite perimeter scorers while easing the burden on Tatum by attacking transition lanes, relentlessly pressuring the paint, and generating offense in isolated sets.

Off the court, Boston surrendered an established veteran leader and proven playoff performer who served as a cornerstone of their championship culture. His absence drastically thins out Boston’s wing depth, forcing role players into expanded roles and leaving the offense far more predictable and reliant on Tatum to carry the scoring load.

The connection that Tatum can make this season with new names on the roster

Tatum now has the chance to establish chemistry with a revamped core headlined by veteran wing Paul George and rim-protecting center Mitchell Robinson. Partnering with George provides Boston with a lethal tandem of multi-positional scoring threats. With George shouldering secondary playmaking responsibilities, Tatum can roam more effectively as an off-ball threat, generating seamless drive-and-kick options.

In the frontcourt, Tatum’s two-man game with Robinson gives Boston an impactful vertical element inside. Robinson’s elite roll gravity and offensive rebounding prowess force defenses to collapse into the paint, opening up wide lanes for Tatum to attack the basket or pull up in rhythm.

Key takeaways

• Jayson Tatum expressed shock over Jaylen Brown’s trade to the Philadelphia 76ers.
• NBA fans speculated that Jayson Tatum secretly wanted Jaylen Brown traded away.
• Paul George and Mitchell Robinson joined Jayson Tatum on the Celtics’ revamped roster.

However, both George and Tatum are expected to play tonight’s contest as they recovered from offseason ailments. Meanwhile, the defending champion Celtics are aiming to re-establish their dominant form following a summer of minor roster adjustments.

With George revealing a key injury update a couple of weeks ago, Boston remains focused on executing the fast-paced, floor-spacing style that propelled them to the 2024 NBA title.

On the other hand, the Sixers are eager to see how its updated core gels. Dynamic guard Tyrese Maxey is expected to log minutes alongside Embiid, with rookie lottery pick VJ Edgecombe also projected to feature prominently in tonight’s rotation.

Projected lineups today for Celtics

With Tatum resting, the Celtics will turn to their reliable backcourt and depth to set the tone, leaning heavily on key playmakers like Derrick White and Payton Pritchard to lead the starting unit.

Here is Boston’s projected starting five for tonight’s game against the Sixers:

• Point Guard: Derrick White
• Shooting Guard: Payton Pritchard
• Small Forward: Paul George
• Power Forward: Jayson Tatum
• Center: Xavier Tillman / Neemias Queta

Tonight’s matchup offers an early barometer for both Eastern Conference contenders as they gear up for what promises to be a high-stakes 2024–25 regular season.

Key takeaways

• Paul George and Jayson Tatum are expected to play tonight’s preseason match.
• Boston’s projected starting five includes Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, Baylor Scheierman, Sam Hauser, and Neemias Queta.
• Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe are projected to feature in Philadelphia’s rotation tonight.

The Celtics superstar sparked major concern during Game 6 at the Wells Fargo Center when he exited with four minutes remaining in the third quarter and headed straight to the locker room. While he eventually returned to the bench, he spent the remainder of the game on a stationary bike as the Celtics fell 106-93.

It will be a devastating blow for the Celtics, who squandered a prime opportunity to close out the series after holding a commanding 3-1 lead. Now, without Tatum, they must find a way to clinch their ticket to the next round in front of the home crowd at TD Garden.

Mazzulla downplayed Tatum’s fitness issue

Seeing Tatum head directly to the locker room undoubtedly sparked a sense of dread among Celtics fans. However, Mazzulla made it a point to clarify after the game that the superstar was not injured and that there was no cause for alarm.

“He went in the back, just got stretched, got some treatment,” Mazzulla told reporters during his press conference, per Bobby Manning of Celtics on CLNS, effectively ruling out any significant injury. “That was about it”.

76ers dealing with concerns on the injury report

Philadelphia also enters the decisive Game 7 with its own concerns on the injury report. Both Joel Embiid and Paul George are listed as probable for the matchup, though both stars are expected to be in the lineup tonight at TD Garden.

The silver lining for the 76ers is that Tyrese Maxey is officially available to play after previously appearing on the injury report. Maxey has been essential to Nick Nurse’s scheme, scoring 20+ points in every game of the series against the Celtics thus far.

To the relief of Celtics Nation, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Boston superstar is in good condition and is fully prepared for tomorrow night’s win-or-go-home clash.

“It’s positive right now. Everyone in Boston is downplaying anything with Jayson Tatum… I’m told that Jayson Tatum told teammates after the game he’s fine, he’s good to go. So, I think the expectation in Boston is Game 7 Jayson Tatum is all good,” Charania said on Get Up.

Tatum clarifies the situation

Many in Boston were uneasy watching Tatum retreat to the locker room during the third quarter and later appearing on a stationary bike without returning to the floor. Following the loss, Tatum addressed the media to explain that the lopsided score played a role in his continued absence.

“You guys probably saw when I went to the back, saw me on the bike; my leg just was a little stiff when I came out in the third quarter,” Tatum told reporters. “But just kind of assessing the moment, the game was a little out of reach”.

Joe Mazzulla confirms Tatum’s availability

The sight of Tatum on the stationary bike sparked fears among fans, especially given his history with a previous Achilles rupture. However, Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla was quick to shut down any speculation regarding a setback.

“He’ll play,” Mazzulla said bluntly when asked by the Boston Globe about Tatum’s status for the series finale. With the season on the line, the Celtics will have their best player on the floor as they look to avoid a historic upset at the hands of the 76ers.

“I can tell he’s still out of shape,” Adebayo told reporters, reflecting on their relationship that dates back to when they were 12 years old. “You see what he’s gone through, and obviously [I was] checking up on him through the rehab phase.”

Tatum is currently navigating the difficult road back from a torn Achilles. While his recovery timeline allowed him to rejoin Boston for the regular-season stretch run, the explosive form that defined his pre-injury dominance hasn’t quite fully returned.

While Tatum‘s raw numbers remain respectable, his efficiency has dipped compared to past seasons. With the postseason looming, the Boston faithful are banking on their franchise cornerstone to rediscover his All-NBA rhythm before the chips are down.

Adebayo focused on Heat’s postseason push

While checking in on a friend is part of the brotherhood, Adebayo remains locked in on Miami’s seeding. The Heat are currently jostling for position in a crowded Eastern Conference, and the captain is keeping the locker room’s focus narrow.

“See if we can win all five, and then figure out whatever happens after that,” Adebayo said of the Heat’s remaining schedule. “Take it one game at a time, and whatever happens, happens at this point.”

Tatum’s comeback campaign

Since returning to the Celtics‘ lineup, Tatum has shown flashes of brilliance mixed with expected rust. Through 12 games, while averaging 31 minutes per night, here is how the star forward has performed:

• Points: 21.3 PPG
• Rebounds: 9.8 RPG
• Assists: 4.8 APG
• Steals: 1.2 SPG
• Shooting Splits: 40.2% FG | 32.1% 3PT | 82.7% FT

Holmgren is expected to return for Oklahoma City after recently missing time due to illness, and reports indicate he is no longer listed on the injury report for the game. Meanwhile, Boston’s situation is less certain.

Tatum has been managing his return following a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered in 2025 and has occasionally been listed on injury reports as the Celtics carefully monitor his workload.

What happened to Chet Holmgren?

Chet Holmgren recently missed games due to an illness, specifically flu-like symptoms. The Oklahoma City Thunder listed him as questionable on injury reports before he sat out multiple games while recovering.

The illness forced him to miss a short stretch of games during March, although it was not considered a long-term health issue. The Thunder medical staff chose to keep him out temporarily while he recovered.

Encouragingly for Oklahoma City, recent updates indicate that he is no longer listed on the injury report and is expected to return to action soon. His return should restore one of the Thunder’s most important defensive anchors.

What injury does Jayson Tatum have?

Jayson Tatum is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon suffered during the 2025 NBA playoffs. The Boston Celtics star has been working his way back after undergoing surgery and spending several months in rehabilitation.

The injury occurred during the 2025 postseason and forced him to miss a big portion of the 2025-26 NBA season while completing his recovery process. Achilles injuries are among the most serious setbacks for basketball players.

In recent weeks, however, the Celtics forward has made progress in his recovery and has already returned to game action after nearly ten months of rehabilitation. Still, Boston has continued to manage his workload carefully.

He has occasionally appeared on injury reports as the team monitors his conditioning and recovery following the surgery. Because of that cautious approach, he may still be listed as questionable or day-to-day.

When could Tatum return to play?

Jayson Tatum has already returned to the Boston Celtics lineup after recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon, making his comeback after roughly 10 months of rehabilitation. However, he will not play tonight.

Medical timelines for this type of injury generally range between nine and twelve months before players can safely return to NBA competition, depending on how their recovery progresses and how quickly they regain strength and mobility.

He made his long-awaited comeback in early March 2026, returning to the court after a lengthy absence and gradually being reintegrated into the rotation. Since his return, Boston has carefully monitored his minutes and overall workload.

The injury occurred in May 2025 during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks, and he underwent surgery shortly afterward.

Now three games into his comeback, the All-NBA forward is already proving his generational talent remains fully intact. Despite a tough road loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night, Tatum remained focused on the long-term plan when addressing his current workload and the team’s strategy for the stretch run.

“I could play more, but I understand the bigger picture,” Tatum told reporters while discussing his restricted minutes. “In the moment, I’m not thinking about my Achilles; I’m trying to compete and be out there, but this is part of the plan and I have to stick with it.“

The cautious approach is a calculated one, as Tatum works to overcome one of the most historically difficult injuries in professional sports. After a ten-month rehabilitation process, he is determined to be at full strength for the playoffs, especially after his absence proved fatal in last year’s second-round exit against the New York Knicks.

Why Tatum’s minutes are the story?

The media’s focus on Tatum’s playing time isn’t without cause, given his immediate impact upon returning to the rotation. In just 27 minutes of action against San Antonio, he dropped an efficient 24 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals, providing a vivid reminder of the elite production he maintained prior to surgery.

While his box score numbers are eye-popping, Tatum remains deeply conscious of his physical limits and the necessity of being healthy for a championship push. By prioritizing a “ramp-up” phase now, he is positioning himself to deliver peak performance when the stakes are highest in late May and June.

With the superstar duo of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum reunited, the Celtics are entering a new phase of their regular-season campaign. Currently sitting at an impressive 43-22, Boston is once again a legitimate threat to secure another banner and cement their status as the team to beat in the East.

According to the official NBA injury report released Friday afternoon, Tatum has been upgraded to available. This marks his first game action in 298 days, dating back to May 2025, when he suffered the injury during Game 4 of the Celtics’ Eastern Conference Semifinals loss to the New York Knicks.

The news is a massive boost for a Celtics squad that has performed admirably in his absence, posting an impressive 41-21 record. While the team has thrived behind MVP-caliber play from Jaylen Brown, the reintegration of an All-NBA talent like Tatum is expected to elevate Boston’s ceiling as they prepare for a deep postseason run.

Tatum was a cornerstone of Joe Mazzulla’s system, and Sam Hauser echoed that sentiment following Thursday’s practice. Speaking with reporters, Hauser highlighted the unique impact the star wing brings to the lineup. “He does so many things on the basketball court that are very hard, but he makes it look really easy,” Hauser stated.

However, Tatum has missed 62 games this season, and reintegrating him at this stage of the campaign could prove challenging. “We only have 20 games left, so it’s going to have to be a quick process whenever that happens,” he added regarding Tatum’s adjustment to the rotation. “And as much as you want a grace period for that, we don’t really have that luxury”.

Jaylen Brown’s leadership in the interim

Entering the season, many questioned whether the Celtics could remain elite without their primary star. After an 0-3 start, Brown took the reins of the franchise, evolving into a premier playmaker and vocal leader. Brown, the reigning 2024 NBA Finals MVP, is currently averaging career highs of 28.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 5 assists per game.

Tatum’s return is expected to alleviate the offensive burden on Brown, allowing the shooting guard to focus more on his elite scoring while Tatum restores the team’s half-court versatility. Despite the long layoff, Tatum is expected to be on a minutes restriction tonight as the training staff monitors his workload in a live-game environment.

Regarding his recovery, NBA insider Chris Haynes recently shared comments from Jayson Tatum about a potential comeback. “I’m trying to come back and I am doing everything I can to come back,” Tatum said. “I just don’t know if I can.” His remarks underscored both determination and caution as he continues to rehab.

Even sitting 5.5 games behind the first-place Detroit Pistons, the Celtics remain a legitimate postseason threat. Jaylen Brown, Payton Pritchard and Derrick White have carried much of the offensive load under head coach Joe Mazzulla, while the team’s defensive structure has remained reliable on most nights.

Tatum has been sidelined all season after suffering an Achilles injury during last year’s playoff loss to the New York Knicks. His rehabilitation process has progressed well and he has returned to practice, but there is still no clear timetable for game action. There has been speculation about a late-season return that could energize Boston in the playoffs, though Tatum has emphasized that he will not rush the process.

Celtics continue to respond

As the Celtics await Tatum’s potential return, Jaylen Brown has emerged as the undisputed offensive leader. Against the Warriors, Brown delivered a standout performance with 23 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists, recording his third triple-double of the season and controlling the pace throughout the night.

Boston built a lead of as many as 34 points and secured a 121 to 110 victory at Chase Center. After the win, Brown acknowledged former teammates Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis, who are now with Golden State, while also expressing confidence in the Celtics’ current core.

It is also important to recognize how Boston has remained competitive amid significant roster changes. The Celtics prioritized financial flexibility in the offseason, trading Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks and Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers. Combined with Horford’s departure, the franchise has leaned heavily on Brown, White and Pritchard, last season’s Sixth Man of the Year, to maintain their standing as contenders in the NBA Eastern Conference.

Jayson Tatum is reportedly on track to return to the Boston Celtics in the latter portion of the 2025–26 NBA season. In HoopsHype’s Around the Beat, CLNS Media Celtics writer Bobby Manning revealed that the Boston superstar could make his on-court comeback by March, a timeline that has generated optimism across the organization and its fan base.

“He has said that he wants his first game back to be at TD Garden,” Manning explained. “I am looking at late February, early March for him to resume five-on-five contact activity and ramp up toward a return. If he has that month-long window before the playoffs, it is feasible to see him back in the lineup by mid-March and fully ramped up for the postseason.”

Manning also noted that, according to medical opinions he consulted, the highest risk period for re-injury typically falls between four and six months after surgery. With Tatum reportedly past that threshold, each additional month of recovery significantly reduces the probability of setbacks and improves his overall outlook heading into the playoffs.

Doubt surrounding Tatum’s return

Tatum’s return is highly anticipated, but uncertainty still surrounds how effective he will be once he steps back on the court. Historically, players recovering from severe injuries often require extended time to regain peak form, which continues to fuel debate among analysts and fans.

The situation is particularly intriguing considering that early projections indicated Tatum would miss the entire year after suffering a torn Achilles tendon during the second round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs. That expectation initially shaped Boston’s long-term planning and roster management decisions.

Despite those projections, Tatum aggressively attacked his rehabilitation program and made significant progress. Recent reports indicated that he even considered a return this NBA season, although he later re-evaluated the idea in light of Boston’s unexpected success without him and concerns about disrupting the team’s current chemistry.

Head coach Joe Mazzulla publicly dismissed any notion that Tatum’s return could negatively affect the locker room, emphasizing that the Celtics would gladly welcome their franchise cornerstone back into the lineup. Manning reiterated that March remains a realistic window, though the final decision will depend on medical clearance and Tatum’s physical response in the coming weeks.
