Some NFL careers seem to stretch deeper into January than others. Built on winning durability and perfect timing, these playoff runs reveal which players made the postseason feel like a yearly destination rather than a rare reward. <div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="SEO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/nfl-players-with-the-most-rushing-yards-in-a-single-season" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20251217_BUS_546887_Jamal-Lewis.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="Some seasons transcend statistics, turning rushing yards into a measure of control, endurance and era-defining dominance. A handful of NFL runs still shape how greatness on the ground is remembered.

January football is where careers are measured differently. The postseason doesn’t reward promise or hype, only teams and players, that keep winning long enough to return year after year.

Some names become fixtures once the playoffs arrive, their seasons routinely stretching beyond Week 18. Whether driven by dynasties or elite quarterbacks, the extended runs reveal who truly lived in the most demanding months.

Playoff appearances offer a different way to understand greatness in the NFL. Beyond rings or single-game heroics, they reflect persistence, timing and the ability to remain relevant as teams, systems and eras change across decades.

Tom Brady | 48 Games

Tom Brady (Source: Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)

Tom Brady’s postseason resume is a statistical outlier that may never be replicated. Over 23 seasons, he appeared in 48 playoff games, effectively playing three additional regular seasons purely in high-stakes, single-elimination football. His journey began as an injury replacement in 2001 and concluded with a career that saw him start in 10 Super Bowls.

This volume of play allowed him to set nearly every significant passing record in the playoffs, including 13,400 passing yards and 88 touchdowns. For over two decades, the road to the Super Bowl almost exclusively went through a team led by Brady.

Adam Vinatieri | 32 Games

Adam Vinatieri (Source: Brett Carlsen/Getty Images)

Consistency is the hallmark of Adam Vinatieri’s career, a kicker whose 32 playoff appearances were split between two of the most successful AFC eras: the early New England Patriots dynasty and the Peyton Manning-led Indianapolis Colts. Vinatieri was not merely a passenger on these teams; he was often the deciding factor.

He participated in five Super Bowls and won four, famously converting game-winning kicks in the final seconds of two of them. His ability to maintain a high conversion rate in freezing conditions and high-pressure moments made him the most trusted specialist in postseason history.

Stephen Gostkowski | 29 Games

Stephen Gostkowski (Source: Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)

Stephen Gostkowski spent 14 seasons as the primary kicker for the New England Patriots, a tenure that aligned with the most dominant stretch in NFL history. His 29 playoff games are a byproduct of a team that reached the AFC Championship game almost annually.

Beyond just being present, he was a prolific scorer, tallying 205 points in the postseason. His role was vital in the Patriots’ ability to secure three championships during his stay, providing a reliable floor for an offense that relied on tactical precision and field position.

Jerry Rice | 29 Games

Jerry Rice (Source: Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)

Jerry Rice’s inclusion on this list is perhaps the most impressive, as he is the only non-quarterback or kicker to reach this level of postseason longevity. Playing 29 games at the most physically demanding position for a receiver requires a legendary commitment to conditioning.

Primarily known for his years with the San Francisco 49ers, he also made a significant playoff run later in his career with the Oakland Raiders. He utilized these 29 appearances to set records that remain untouched, including over 2,200 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns in playoff competition.

Peyton Manning | 27 Games

Peyton Manning (Source: Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

Peyton Manning’s 27 playoff appearances represent two distinct chapters of excellence. Known for his meticulous preparation and control at the line of scrimmage, he led his teams to the playoffs in 15 of his 17 active seasons.

He is one of the few quarterbacks to reach the Super Bowl with four different head coaches and remains the first to win a title as the starting quarterback for two different franchises. His postseason career was defined by his ability to elevate different rosters, finishing his tenure with over 7,300 passing yards on the playoff stage.

D.D. Lewis | 27 Games

D.D. Lewis (Source: Getty Images)

A cornerstone of the legendary “Doomsday Defense,” D.D. Lewis was a fixture in the Dallas Cowboys’ lineup throughout the 1970s. His 27 playoff appearances remained an NFL record for many years and still stand as the highest total in Cowboys history. He was instrumental in Dallas reaching five Super Bowls, winning two of them.

His versatility as a linebacker allowed him to excel in Tom Landry’s complex defensive schemes, notably recording two interceptions in the 1975 NFC Championship game. He retired as one of the few players to compete across three different decades, spanning from the late 60s to the early 80s.

Bill Romanowski | 26 Games

Bill Romanowski (Source: Andy Lyons)

Bill Romanowski’s 26-game postseason career is a testament to both his durability and his presence on winning rosters. Over 16 seasons, he never missed a single regular-season game, a streak that extended into deep playoff runs with the San Francisco 49ers and the Denver Broncos.

He won back-to-back Super Bowls with both franchises, making him one of the few players in history to secure four rings with two different teams. Known for his intense and often controversial playing style, he provided a veteran physical presence in the middle of the defense for every postseason contender he joined.

Larry Cole | 26 Games

Larry Cole (Source: NFL Past Players)

Larry Cole spent his entire 13-year career with the Dallas Cowboys, serving as a vital component of the defensive line during the franchise’s most successful era. Like his teammate D.D. Lewis, he appeared in 26 playoff games and five Super Bowls.

He was a highly adaptable defender, capable of playing both end and tackle, which allowed him to remain productive as the Cowboys’ roster evolved around him. He is famously remembered for his habit of scoring against rivals; all four of his career touchdowns (three on interceptions and one on a fumble recovery) came against the Washington Redskins.

Travis Kelce | 25 Games

Travis Kelce (Source: Patrick Smith/Getty Images)

Travis Kelce has utilized his 25 playoff appearances to rewrite the record books for pass-catchers. As the primary target in the Kansas City Chiefs’ modern dynasty, he has surpassed Jerry Rice for the most postseason receptions in NFL history. His connection with Patrick Mahomes has resulted in 19 playoff touchdowns, placing him second all-time behind Rice.

His ability to find openings in postseason defenses has led to seven consecutive seasons with deep playoff runs, including four Super Bowl appearances and three titles, cementing his status as the most productive tight end in the history of the tournament.

James Winchester | 25 Games

James Winchester (Source: Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

While long snappers rarely command headlines, James Winchester’s 25 playoff games highlight his essential role in the Kansas City Chiefs’ sustained success. Since joining the team in 2015, he has been the starting long snapper for every game of the Mahomes era, ensuring the stability of the special teams unit during three Super Bowl championship runs.

His career is a rare example of specialist longevity; by never missing a snap in high-pressure situations, he has quietly climbed the all-time list of playoff appearances, tying teammates for the most postseason games played in franchise history.

Matthew Slater | 25 Games

Matthew Slater (Source: Billie Weiss/Getty Images)

Matthew Slater represents a unique chapter in NFL history: a pure special teams player who achieved legendary status without ever being a regular on offense. Serving as the special teams captain for the New England Patriots for 16 seasons, he appeared in 25 postseason games, acting as the emotional and tactical heartbeat of the unit during three championship runs (XLIX, LI, LIII).

His elite speed as a “gunner” and his ability to pin opponents deep were critical to Bill Belichick’s field-position strategy. A 10-time Pro Bowler as a specialist, his playoff longevity is a testament to the value of excelling in the game’s “third phase.”

Charlie Waters | 25 Games

Charlie Waters (Source: NFL Past Players)

Charlie Waters was a defining figure of the Dallas Cowboys’ “Doomsday Defense” throughout the 1970s. His 25 playoff appearances are highlighted by a remarkable knack for turnovers; he still holds the NFL record for the most career postseason interceptions with 9, including a historic three-interception performance in a single game.

He competed in five Super Bowls, securing victories in VI and XII. His instinctive play in the secondary and his ability to diagnose complex offenses made him a permanent fixture in the postseason for over a decade, during which the Cowboys rarely missed a deep January run.

Devin McCourty | 24 Games

Devin McCourty (Source: Mike Stobe/Getty Images)

Devin McCourty’s 24 postseason games, all of them as a starter, underscore his role as the cerebral anchor of the Patriots’ second dynasty. He is one of the few players in league history to earn Pro Bowl honors at both cornerback and safety, a versatility that allowed New England’s defense to reinvent itself year after year.

A three-time Super Bowl champion, he served as a team captain for 12 consecutive seasons. By the time he retired, he had logged more defensive snaps in the playoffs than almost any other player in the modern era, providing a consistent veteran presence in a secondary that faced the league’s most prolific passers.

Vince Wilfork | 24 Games

Vince Wilfork (Source: Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images)

Vince Wilfork was the immovable force at the center of the defensive line for 24 postseason contests, primarily with the Patriots before finishing his career with the Houston Texans. Weighing over 325 pounds, his impact went beyond traditional statistics; he was a master at absorbing double-teams and collapsing the pocket from the inside.

A two-time Super Bowl winner, his agility was often surprising for his size, evidenced by his crucial interception in the 2011 AFC Championship game. His presence ensured that his teams could control the line of scrimmage, a prerequisite for any defensive success in cold-weather playoff football.

David Akers | 24 Games

David Akers (Source: Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)

David Akers concludes this veteran group with 24 appearances, establishing himself as one of the most reliable scoring threats in postseason history. The bulk of his legacy was built with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he once set an NFL record by converting 19 consecutive field goals in the playoffs.

He finished his career with 39 successful postseason field goals, including a productive late-career stint with the San Francisco 49ers that led to an appearance in Super Bowl XLVII. His ability to maintain accuracy in the swirling winds of Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field made him an indispensable asset during an era of sustained NFC dominance.

" title="NFL players with the most receiving touchdowns in a single season" publication_id="BUS#/nfl/nfl-players-with-the-most-receiving-touchdowns-in-a-single-season">

Some NFL seasons tilt the field toward one receiver. Defensive plans adjust, coverage tightens and still the ball keeps going his way, piling up yards that feel less accidental and more unavoidable.

The league’s biggest receiving totals weren’t always about speed alone. They were built through volume, timing, trust and offenses willing to test the same matchup week after week.

Those single-season yardage marks remain rare benchmarks. They tell the story of when opportunity met precision, and how far an NFL passing attack can be stretched in one year.

Calvin Johnson | Rec Yds: 1,964

Calvin Johnson (Source: Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)

Calvin Johnson‘s 2012 season with the Detroit Lions was not merely a stellar performance; it was a statistical anomaly that forced a re-evaluation of the limits of the passing game.

Known as “Megatron” for his unique combination of size, speed, and strength, he culminated his masterpiece with 1,964 receiving yards, setting the all-time record in a 16-game season—a mark that, surprisingly, still holds firm.

What makes this record particularly astounding is the context. Unlike other players on this list who benefited from explosive attacks and sometimes more evenly distributed yardage, he was the central, and often nearly solitary, gravitational force of the Detroit offense, drawing monumental defensive attention, including double and triple coverage week after week.

His 122 receptions came from 204 targets, a volume reflecting the trust (and need) of his quarterback, Matthew Stafford, to simply throw the ball in the direction of his elusive giant.

This record, as he himself has expressed, was expected to fall sooner given the recent addition of a 17th game to the league calendar, underscoring the magnificence of achieving it in a shorter format.

Cooper Kupp | Rec Yds: 1,947

Cooper Kupp (Source: Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

Cooper Kupp‘s 2021 campaign not only placed him second historically in single-season yards but redefined the absolute dominance of a wide receiver in the modern NFL. His performance was a masterclass in route precision, instant chemistry with his new quarterback, Matthew Stafford, and relentless work ethic.

He joined the elite list by recording the receiver Triple Crown, leading the league in receptions (145), yards (1,947), and receiving touchdowns (16). But the story doesn’t end with the regular-season curtain call. His achievement is distinguished by being part of a Super Bowl winning run.

If we consider the yards accumulated during the postseason that culminated in the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI title, he set an even more staggering record: 2,425 combined yards from the regular season and playoffs, crowning his year with the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player award. His season wasn’t just an individual feat; it was the statistical engine that drove team glory.

Julio Jones | Rec Yds: 1,871

Julio Jones (Source: Carmen Mandato/Getty Images)

If you are looking for the definition of a “generational athlete” at the wide receiver position, Julio Jones‘ name must appear early. His 2015 season is a testament to consistency and athletic power that permanently installed him in the pantheon of the greats. He amassed 1,871 receiving yards, the third-highest total in league history.

That year, he was not just productive, but historically fast in his start, recording the most receptions by any player through the first three games of an NFL season. With an imposing height and elite speed, he made deep plays look routine, while his ability to break tackles made him a threat after the catch.

The Falcons’ offense at the time, under the coordination of Kyle Shanahan, exploited his versatility, moving him around the formation to create constant mismatches. He didn’t rely on luck; he relied on his ability to be virtually unstoppable in every sector of the field.

Jerry Rice | Rec Yds: 1,848

Jerry Rice (Source: Ronald Martinez /Allsport)

To talk about Jerry Rice is to refer to the greatest receiver in NFL history, and his 1995 season is not just a record but a testament to his dominance in a different era. That year, he reached 1,848 receiving yards, a mark that stood as the league’s gold standard for 17 years until it was surpassed by Calvin Johnson.

His 1995 feat is remarkable because it occurred before the full relaxation of rules favoring aerial offenses in the 21st century. His performance was a study in perfection: 122 receptions and 15 touchdowns.

At 33, an age when many receivers begin to decline, he demonstrated a dedication to training and route precision that kept him at the very top. It is a reminder that flawless technique, combined with a legendary work ethic, can transcend any era of football.

Antonio Brown | Rec Yds: 1,834

Antonio Brown (Source: Justin K. Aller/Getty Images)

The peak of Antonio Brown‘s career is undeniable, and his 2015 season stood as the pinnacle of his technical brilliance. Throughout the campaign, he proved to be one of the most difficult receivers to cover in the league, combining agility, speed, and a supernatural ability to haul in contested catches. His total of 1,834 receiving yards places him firmly in the all-time NFL Top 5.

Interestingly, this achievement shares the year 2015 with Julio Jones’ record season, speaking to a particularly prolific year for receivers overall. What distinguished him was his ability to accumulate yards after the catch and his constant use within head coach Mike Tomlin’s scheme and offensive coordinator Todd Haley’s system.

In a memorable game that year, he showed his explosive potential by recording 284 yards in a single contest, one of the highest single-game totals in league history. His record is not just a number, but a reflection of a four-season stretch with at least 100 receptions and 1,280 yards, solidifying his brief but spectacular period as the most productive receiver in the league.

Justin Jefferson | Rec Yds: 1,809

Justin Jefferson (Source: Steph Chambers/Getty Images)

In the landscape of modern NFL receiving, Justin Jefferson‘s 2022 season was an extraordinary demonstration of a young talent peaking early. At just 23 years old, he became the youngest player in history to lead the league in both receptions and receiving yards, a feat that earned him the coveted Offensive Player of the Year award.

Amassing 1,809 receiving yards, he vaulted himself directly into the top echelon of single-season performances, proving his worth as an elite playmaker immediately after entering the league.

What makes his statistical explosion so compelling is his route-running versatility coupled with an innate ability to secure contested catches. He was the focal point of the Vikings’ revitalized passing attack under a new head coach, frequently moving from the slot to the outside to exploit mismatches.

His consistency, averaging 106.4 yards per game, showcased not just a highlight reel of spectacular grabs but a foundational dominance that sustained itself over the new 17-game format. His season solidified him as a face of the next generation of receivers, delivering historic production at an age when many are just beginning to find their footing.

Tyreek Hill | Rec Yds: 1,799

Tyreek Hill (Source: Mike Stobe/Getty Images)

The 2023 campaign for Tyreek Hill was a heart-stopping exhibition of speed and deep-ball artistry that left defensive coordinators grasping at air. Known simply as “The Cheetah”, his 1,799 receiving yards—a personal best and the seventh-highest total in history—were accumulated through a relentless attack that stretched the field to its breaking point.

He openly pursued the 2,000-yard benchmark, a number previously considered mythical, using his unparalleled speed to create massive separation. His 112.4 average receiving yards per game speaks volumes about his explosive impact. Playing in Mike McDaniel’s dynamic offense, he became the league’s preeminent deep threat, but his season wasn’t defined solely by the long ball.

It was a potent mix of quick slants, screens turned into 50-yard gains, and deep post routes, demonstrating that his blazing speed is perfectly complemented by exceptional hands and field vision. His season was a thrilling, high-wire act of offense that pushed the Miami Dolphins to be one of the NFL’s most feared scoring machines.

Isaac Bruce | Rec Yds: 1,781

Isaac Bruce (Source: Doug Benc/Getty Images)

Before the “Greatest Show on Turf” era in St. Louis, there was the 1995 season of Isaac Bruce. In only his second year in the league, the Hall of Famer delivered 1,781 receiving yards, a figure that, at the time, was the fifth-highest in NFL history and established a benchmark that remains the Rams’ single-season record.

His performance that year was less about bombast and more about silken route running and smooth precision. He became the first player in NFL history to record three consecutive games with over 170 receiving yards, showcasing a rare consistency and dominance.

His ability to change direction and create space was unmatched, allowing him to thrive even on a team that, at the time, had a less consistent offensive identity compared to the Super Bowl years that would follow. His 1995 season is a testament to the power of pure receiving talent to elevate an offense, a foundational pillar laid before the team’s later championship glory.

CeeDee Lamb | Rec Yds: 1,749

CeeDee Lamb (Source: Luke Hales/Getty Images)

CeeDee Lamb‘s 2023 season was a spectacular leap into true superstar territory, culminating in an NFC-leading 1,749 receiving yards, placing him squarely among the top performers in league history. This campaign was characterized by his versatility and a historic workload, seeing him lead the league in receptions with 135.

He transitioned from a promising star to the unequivocal centerpiece of the Dallas offense. His production wasn’t relegated to one area; he dominated in short-area quickness, extended drives with tough catches over the middle, and showcased breakaway speed on the perimeter.

Crucially, his production became the motor of the Cowboys’ high-flying, up-tempo offense. The fact that he set the all-time franchise record for receptions and yards in a season underscores his pivotal role, stepping into the legacy left by Hall of Fame receivers in Dallas and redefining the peak of productivity for the organization.

Charley Hennigan | Rec Yds: 1,746

Charley Hennigan (Source: Tennessee Titans)

The story of Charley Hennigan‘s 1961 season is one of historical perspective, showcasing dominance in a nascent league era. Playing for the Houston Oilers of the American Football League, he amassed an astonishing 1,746 receiving yards—a professional football single-season record at the time that stood for 34 years.

This performance is particularly remarkable because it occurred during a 14-game season, giving him the highest yardage-per-game average on this entire list. Hennigan’s season was a statistical torrent that included three games with over 200 receiving yards, a professional football record that still stands today.

Playing alongside quarterback George Blanda, he was a revolutionary force whose output in the early 1960s was light years ahead of his contemporaries, a true pioneer who defined the offensive capabilities of the new American Football League.

Michael Thomas | Rec Yds: 1,725

Michael Thomas (Source: Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

When chronicling single-season dominance, Michael Thomas‘ 2019 campaign is defined by one primary metric: volume. While his 1,725 receiving yards are elite, his season is most famous for setting the all-time NFL record for receptions with 149, obliterating the previous mark.

This unparalleled consistency and ability to get open on nearly every down earned him the 2019 Offensive Player of the Year award. He was an absolute tyrant in the short-to-intermediate game, earning the moniker “Slant Boy” for his perfection of the quick, timing-based routes that quarterback Drew Brees executed with mastery.

His yardage total, while slightly lower than the list’s leaders, came with a nearly 80% catch rate on a colossal 185 targets, illustrating an almost machine-like efficiency. His season was less about spectacular deep plays and more about an unyielding, punishing accumulation of first downs and yards that choked opposing defenses drive after drive.

Marvin Harrison | Rec Yds: 1,722

Marvin Harrison (Source: Ron Hoskins/Getty Images)

If efficiency could be measured in yards, Marvin Harrison would be its standard unit. His 2002 season was highlighted not just by the 1,722 receiving yards he accumulated, but by the level of precision and volume he demonstrated, setting a record that, for many, is nearly untouchable: 143 receptions.

Although this catch record was later surpassed, his achievement in a pre-extreme passing era underscores his technical dominance. Harrison, known for his quiet focus and relentless work ethic, was the perfect partner for Peyton Manning in one of the most historic offenses in the NFL.

His game wasn’t based on pure speed or brute strength, but on an absolute mastery of route running, making defensive backs look like they were always reacting a step too late.

His 2002 season is a testament to the perfection in the art of receiving, with an uncanny ability to find the holes in the defense across every sector of the field and a reliability that Manning utilized on almost every crucial down.

Tyreek Hill | Rec Yds: 1,710

Tyreek Hill (Source: Rich Schultz/Getty Images)

Tyreek Hill‘s 2023 onslaught was not a simple exhibition; it was a historic pursuit of the 2,000-yard record that kept the league captivated until the final game. Before that, “The Cheetah” reached 1,710 receiving yards in 2022, his second-highest total.

His success that season lay in his unprecedented use as a pure speed weapon. The Mike McDaniel offense exploited his ability to create separation not only on deep plays but by turning short passes into explosive medium- and long-yardage gains.

Beyond the raw numbers, his campaign was a playmaking landmark, where every touch of the ball felt like a touchdown threat, proving that speed combined with sure hands can be the most destructive formula in modern football.

Ja’Marr Chase | Rec Yds: 1,708

Ja’Marr Chase (Source: Justin K. Aller/Getty Images)

Although Ja’Marr Chase is not yet featured in the all-time Top 10 for single-season yards, his impact on the league with his 1,455 receiving yards in 2021 is worthy of mention in any article about aerial dominance.

His rookie season was not just spectacular, but it set a new NFL record for the most receiving yards by a rookie, breaking Bill Groman’s previous 1,400-yard mark from 1960. He reunited with his college quarterback, Joe Burrow, and the result was instant chemistry that set defenses ablaze.

What distinguishes this performance is the explosive nature of his yardage; he had a remarkable average of 18.0 yards per reception, meaning it wasn’t just about volume, but about big, decisive, game-changing plays.

His season was the catalyst that propelled the Bengals from a losing team to Super Bowl contenders, demonstrating that explosiveness on the offensive side is an invaluable currency.

Antonio Brown | Rec Yds: 1,698

Antonio Brown (Source: Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

Antonio Brown was, at his best, the personification of an all-purpose receiver without weaknesses. His 2015 season, with 1,834 receiving yards, was not a fluke, but the peak of an unprecedented six-year run of elite production. In 2014, he predicted his peak performance with 1,698 receiving yards.

He distinguished himself not just by the yards, but by his mechanical consistency and post-catch prowess. His ability to catch the ball at the highest point, his footwork to manipulate defensive backs, and his relentless motor made him essentially undefendable.

In a field full of giants and sprinters, he utilized an unmatched combination of elite technique and fierce competitive desire to dominate the game, racking up yards at a pace that kept him among the league leaders year after year. This campaign remains a benchmark for technical excellence at the wide receiver position.

Every NFL season culminates in the most spectacular play: the receiving touchdown. These are the moments where athleticism meets precision, where legends are forged in the back corner of the end zone.

Only a select few elevated this skill to an art form, reaching statistical heights once thought impossible in a 16-game gauntlet. A benchmark of scoring mastery stood firm, representing the pinnacle of single-season aerial dominance.

From the rugged early days of the league to the high-flying offenses of the modern era, the evolution of the wide receiver position has been marked by this relentless pursuit of the goal line. This is a tale of record-setters.

Randy Moss (23 Rec. TDs) | Season: 2007

Randy Moss (Source: Jim Rogash/Getty Images)

There are records that feel unreachable, and then there is Randy Moss‘ mark of 23 receiving touchdowns in 2007. It wasn’t just a number; it was the zenith of a perfect season for the New England Patriots.

Following a tumultuous stint in Oakland, his arrival in Foxborough felt like an explosion of pent-up talent. Paired with a red-hot Tom Brady (who also broke the passing touchdown record that year), he became an unstoppable aerial force.

Standing 6 feet 4 inches tall with speed that defied physics, his 23-touchdown season was an exhibition of skill in winning jump balls, especially in the red zone. It was a visual phenomenon that combined untamed athleticism with an instant, telepathic chemistry with his quarterback.

The Brady-Moss duo not only made history with an undefeated regular season (16-0) but redefined what was possible in a modern offense. No one, to this day, has been able to eclipse this feat of 23 trips to the promised land.

Jerry Rice (22 Rec. TDs) | Season: 1987

Jerry Rice (Source: Jed Jacobsohn /Allsport)

The debate about the greatest receiver of all time cannot omit the astounding factor of Jerry Rice‘s 1987 season. The great Rice not only reached an impressive 22 receiving touchdowns, but he did so in only 12 games, due to a players’ strike that shortened the schedule.

Think about it: he scored at a pace of 1.83 touchdowns per game. That is a breathtaking efficiency record. While his modern competitors have the benefit of a 16- or 17-game calendar, his prowess was an exercise in concentrated focus and intensity.

Under the legendary Bill Walsh and catching passes from Joe Montana for the San Francisco 49ers, he wasn’t just the best on the field; he was on a different plane of performance than everyone else. His 1987 was a masterclass in how to maximize every opportunity, setting a precedent for excellence that stood for 20 years until Moss finally surpassed him.

Davante Adams (18 Rec. TDs) | Season: 2020

Davante Adams (Source: Quinn Harris/Getty Images)

In a year of global chaos, Davante Adams brought order and brilliance to the Green Bay Packers‘ offense. His 2020 season, featuring 18 receiving touchdowns despite him playing only 14 games, was a masterpiece in the art of precision and route running.

He didn’t rely purely on explosive speed; his game was built on detail, subtle deception, and an almost telepathic connection with Aaron Rodgers, the MVP Quarterback that season. He rose as the epitome of the modern receiver who dominates the area near the goal line. There wasn’t a single cornerback in the league who could anticipate his next move.

The fact that he matched the 18-score mark in fewer games than his contemporaries at that level speaks to an unparalleled ability to score when his team needed it most. His 2020 solidified his status as one of the most feared Red Zone threats.

Sterling Sharpe (18 Rec. TDs) | Season: 1994

Sterling Sharpe (Source: Green Bay Packers)

Before Favre, Rodgers and Adams became synonymous with success in Green Bay, the name that terrified defenses was Sterling Sharpe. His 1994 season, where he amassed 18 receiving touchdowns, was not just a statistical peak; it was a testament to a generational talent whose career was tragically cut short.

He was a complete, physically dominant receiver for the Packers. His 1994 year, which was also the last of his career due to a severe neck injury, demonstrated total command of the passing game. Alongside Brett Favre, he formed a combination that seemed destined to break more records.

Watching such a brilliant player reach 18 touchdowns and then abruptly disappear from the field gives his accomplishment a nostalgic and dramatic quality. His 18 scores feel like the end of an unfinished masterpiece.

Mark Clayton (18 Rec. TDs) | Season: 1984

Mark Clayton (Source: Rick Stewart/Getty Images)

To understand Mark Clayton‘s 1984 season, you have to understand the phenomenon of Dan Marino and his Miami Dolphins offense. Before the record-breaking explosion of the 90s, it was the Marks Brothers (Clayton and Mark Duper) who truly opened up the field.

Clayton, with 18 scores, was the primary beneficiary of Marino’s record-setting passing touchdown season. He wasn’t the biggest receiver, but his speed, his ability to stretch the field vertically, and his precise route-running made him the threat you couldn’t take your eyes off of.

In 1984, he showed that the NFL was evolving toward the passing game, and he was one of its most effective pioneers. His success underscores how the chemistry between an elite quarterback and a clever receiver can rewrite the record books.

Ja’Marr Chase (17 Rec. TDs) | Season: 2024

Ja’Marr Chase (Source: Ron Jenkins/Getty Images)

Ja’Marr Chase‘s 2024 season with the Cincinnati Bengals wasn’t just about reaching 17 receiving touchdowns; it was about establishing a new order. With 17 scores, the young marvel joined the elite, but his story has a unique journalistic twist: he achieved the Receiving Triple Crown (leading the league in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns) in the same campaign.

At 24 years old, he proved to be an all-situation perimeter weapon: capable of scoring a 70-yard touchdown or being the key target in the red zone. His performance was a total justification of his status as one of the league’s brightest stars, surpassing the 1,700 receiving yards barrier in addition to his 17 scores. He is proof that the generational talent of the new era is ready to rewrite history.

Rob Gronkowski (17 Rec. TDs) | Season: 2011

Rob Gronkowski (Source: NFL via Getty Images)

Usually, this list is dominated by wide receivers, which makes Rob Gronkowski‘s inclusion a narrative turning point. In 2011, “Gronk” was not just the best tight end in the league; he was a dominant force who tallied 17 receiving touchdowns, a record for his position that feels unbreakable.

His season was a physical anomaly. With the speed of a receiver but the size of an offensive lineman, he was simply too big for cornerbacks to cover and too fast for linebackers to track. His ability to leap over the defense in the heart of the red zone became an unavoidable, signature play for the Patriots.

His mark is not just a tight end record; it’s a testament to his overall offensive impact, proving that in modern football, the path to the end zone doesn’t have to go only through the wideouts.

Randy Moss (17 Rec. TDs) | Season: 2003

Randy Moss (Source: SB Nation)

By 2003, the league already knew what Randy Moss represented, but that didn’t stop him from tearing up defenses once again. His 17-touchdown season with the Minnesota Vikings marked his third year with 17 or more scores (along with 1998 and 2007, which you already covered), a testament to an unparalleled, elite consistency.

In 2003, he not only showcased his terrifying speed but also a maturity in his game that made him even more dangerous. His scores weren’t just spectacular plays; they were proof that he could dominate every facet of the game, from short routes to deep passes.

In a season where he proved to be the single offensive threat the Vikings clung to, these 17 receptions solidified his reputation not just as a playmaker, but as the most singular scoring force of his generation.

Randy Moss (17 Rec. TDs) | Season: 1998

Randy Moss (Source: Minnesota Vikings)

The American football world was barely catching up to the legend of Randy Moss when he burst into the league with 17 receiving touchdowns as a rookie for the Minnesota Vikings in 1998. This feat, unmatched for a rookie, was an explosive declaration of intent.

Wearing the famous 84 jersey, he brought a whole new dimension to the game. His nickname, “The Freak”, was born from his ability to turn mediocre passes into scores thanks to his leap and secure hands.

His 1998 was not just a record-breaking season; it was a cultural event where every game seemed to feature a new highlight reel that defied comprehension. He is the epitome of an instant impact that redefined what is expected of a player newly arrived in the NFL.

Cris Carter (17 Rec. TDs) | Season: 1995

Cris Carter (Source: Minnesota Vikings)

Cris Carter‘s 17-touchdown season in 1995, also with the Minnesota Vikings, is a study in technical perfection. While Moss was the raw force of nature, he was the surgeon. In a year where he set a personal scoring best, he demonstrated that intelligence and precision often trumped pure speed.

He was famous for his creed: “All I ever do is catch touchdowns“. And 1995 was his magnum opus. His ability to find the “soft spots” in the red zone defense, and his body control to secure every contested ball, made him the trusted target for his quarterback. His season was a masterclass in how anticipation, positioning, and unusually sure hands translate directly into points on the scoreboard.

Carl Pickens (17 Rec. TDs) | Season: 1995

Carl Pickens (Source: Pro Football History)

While Carter was grabbing headlines in Minnesota, Carl Pickens was living out his own legendary year in Cincinnati. In a display of pure offensive power, Pickens also reached 17 receiving touchdowns in 1995 with the Bengals.

This coincidence with Carter underscores the offensive explosion experienced throughout the league that season. He was known for his physical play and his ability to win one-on-one battles on the perimeter. His 1995 was proof that he could be the central engine of the offense.

With him at his peak, the Bengals had a receiver with a blend of athleticism and tenacity, capable of making big plays and securing crucial scores near the goal line. His achievement, though sometimes overshadowed by other names, represents one of the greatest seasons in the franchise’s history.

Jerry Rice (17 Rec. TDs) | Season: 1989

Jerry Rice (Source: San Francisco 49ers)

The year 1989 was foundational for Jerry Rice. While his 1987 (22 TDs) was spectacular, his 17-touchdown season in 1989 cemented his status as the most dominant receiver of the decade. This achievement, which coincided with a championship season, showed that elite performance was his status quo.

At this point in his career, he was the definition of consistency. His 17 scores were not only crucial, but they occurred on the San Francisco 49ers‘ path to their fourth Super Bowl. He proved to be the most reliable offensive weapon on a star-studded team.

It wasn’t just the quantity; it was the quality, the timing, and the pressure under which he delivered every touchdown. His 1989 is an example of how a superstar consistently produces at the highest level when team success is on the line.

Bill Groman (17 Rec. TDs) | Season: 1961

Bill Groman (Source: Heidelberg University)

The name Bill Groman might not resonate with the same familiarity as NFL icons, but his season of 17 receiving touchdowns in 1961 is a solid-gold achievement. What makes his mark unique is that it was accomplished in the American Football League, the NFL’s rival league at the time, playing for the Houston Oilers.

Groman, a receiver who combined power with surprising speed, dominated the passing game during an era when the AFL was establishing itself as a bold entity, prone to more spectacular offenses.

His 1961 record of 17 touchdowns was a declaration that the AFL could not only compete but also produce world-class playmakers. His achievement is a historical bridge, showing that the ability to score explosively was not confined solely to the NFL.

Elroy Hirsch (17 Rec. TDs) | Season: 1951

Elroy Hirsch (Source: Los Angeles Rams)

Elroy Hirsch‘s 1951 season is one of the most legendary in the early NFL, an exhibition of athletic versatility that culminated in 17 receiving touchdowns. Playing for the Los Angeles Rams, he was not just a receiver; he was a star who transitioned from halfback, redefining what an end (the receiver position of the era) could achieve.

His nickname, “Crazylegs”, originated from his unusual stride that made him look off-balance, yet he was incredibly difficult to tackle. In 1951, he was the centerpiece of the Rams’ offense known as the “Bomb” (the first modern vertical attack).

His 17 scores, which also included a then-record 1,495 receiving yards, are proof that even when the NFL was still tactically developing, pure scoring talent could dominate. His season is a landmark in the game’s transition to an aerial focus.

Don Hutson (17 Rec. TDs) | Season: 1942

Don Hutson (Source: Green Bay Packers)

If the “touchdown” is art, then Don Hutson was the Renaissance master. His season of 17 receiving touchdowns in 1942 is, statistically, the most dominant performance in NFL history, considering the context of the era. Playing for the Green Bay Packers, he surpassed the previous record by an astounding 11 scores.

In 1942, American football was primarily a ground sport. Passing formations were rudimentary, and defenses were physical. He was so superior to his contemporaries that he is credited with forcing the NFL to invent secondary defensive formations just to try, unsuccessfully, to cover him.

His 17-touchdown season, achieved in a mere 11-game schedule, has the ring of legend: it is a record of scoring dominance by percentage that will likely never be matched in the modern game. He didn’t just set the record; he invented the modern receiver position.

The New England Patriots have built a powerful offense around Drake Maye, and now the young quarterback will have another weapon at his disposal. The team has signed the son of a Hall of Famer to strengthen its wide receiver group.
The New England Patriots have just given Drake Maye a new wide receiver. The AFC East club has decided to bolster its offense by signing the son of a Hall of Famer for the remainder of the 2025 NFL season.

During the offseason, there were plenty of doubts about the Patriots. With a new head coach in Mike Vrabel and a young quarterback in Drake Maye, many expected New England to struggle in the AFC East this year.

However, the team is now on track to contend for the division title once again. Vrabel knows he needs more weapons to reach that goal, which is why the Patriots have added a new wide receiver to help Maye during the second half of the campaign.

Patriots sign son of Jerry Rice to bolster Drake Maye’s offense

Last year, the Los Angeles Chargers drafted Brenden Rice in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. His last name sounded familiar for a reason — he’s the son of Hall of Fame legend Jerry Rice.

After failing to earn a regular spot with the Chargers, the team waived him in August. Now, the Patriots have given him a second chance, signing him off Los Angeles’ practice squad, per Jordan Schultz.

Although Brenden Rice didn’t post eye-catching numbers during his college career at Colorado and USC, many still believe his natural talent and football pedigree could help him thrive — especially in a developing offense led by Drake Maye.

        <div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/stefon-diggs-backs-drake-maye-after-struggles-against-falcons" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20251104_BUS_520591_stefon-diggs.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="Stefon Diggs had Drake Maye's back after the win.

Rice joins an already talented Patriots offense anchored by Stefon Diggs. His arrival comes at a crucial moment, as Kayshon Boutte is dealing with a hamstring injury and the team needs more depth at wide receiver.

Who are the wide receivers for the New England Patriots?

As mentioned, Stefon Diggs is the clear WR1 and the primary weapon for Drake Maye. The two have built strong chemistry this season, forming one of the most productive duos in the AFC.

Boutte is listed as WR2, with Mack Hollins as the third option. DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, Efton Chism III, and now Brenden Rice round out a deep and promising wide receiver group for New England.

Brock Purdy’s San Francisco 49ers appear to be contenders heading into the upcoming NFL season, though some believe they’ll have to overcome a few challenges to get there.
The San Francisco 49ers are one of several NFL teams desperately looking to bounce back from last season, which ended without a playoff appearance. To help turn things around, Brock Purdy has been surrounded with a wave of young talent — a move that, according to many, could be a double-edged sword.

While many believe that the offseason and the most recent draft were ultimately fruitful for the Bay Area, others have expressed concern about how Kyle Shanahan will manage to mold all the young talent and maximize its potential.

Jerry Rice is widely regarded as the greatest wide receiver in NFL history and, among many accomplishments, lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy three times with the 49ers. That’s why his opinion carries serious weight in San Francisco — and he recently shared his thoughts on what lies ahead for the team.

“I just feel like we added on too many pieces. The reason why I say that is these guys are young guys,” Rice told Mercury News. “Super Bowl 60 is going to be here in San Francisco. I would have preferred to sort of leave everything like last year, add on to that, and have a chance for this coming year.

Former player Jerry Lee Rice Sr looks on before Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium on February 02, 2020 in Miami, Florida.

“Now, can Kyle Shanahan pull it together, and can these guys jell? We have to wait and see. But there’s this big question mark if it’s going to work. I’m always going to go Niners no matter what. But we’re bringing in so many young players. It’s going to take a while for that team to jell. If it doesn’t happen this year, then maybe the next couple of years.”

The key to the defense

Despite the doubts surrounding the team’s performance heading into the new season, Rice is confident that the arrival of Robert Saleh will be one of the high points for the 49ers’ staff.

“I feel like you win championships with defense. Maybe that’s why they brought Robert Saleh back. If that defense can get rolling like it did the last couple of years when he was around, I think we have a legitimate chance.

“The offense is going to take a while to catch up. You want the offense, toward the end, working on all cylinders. If that happens now, everything is good to go.”

New faces in the Bay

Despite several departures — including the significant loss of Deebo Samuel to the Commanders — the San Francisco 49ers have made smart moves to maintain balance on both offense and defense heading into the upcoming season.

Shanahan’s team used the draft to strengthen their defense, selecting Mykel Williams with the 11th overall pick. The former Georgia standout brings power and speed to the defensive line. At pick 43, they added Alfred Collins, a strong and athletic interior lineman who adds depth up front.

In free agency, San Francisco brought in quarterback Mac Jones and wide receiver Demarcus Robinson. Jones gives the team a solid backup option behind Brock Purdy, while Robinson adds veteran experience and reliable hands to a receiving group that lost key talent.

Reaching a milestone in the NFL

The San Francisco 49ers have a unique opportunity to achieve Super Bowl glory on their home turf as Levi’s Stadium is set to host Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026. This rare home-field advantage has only been accomplished once before, by Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV in early 2021.

For many fans, no wide receiver compares to Jerry Rice. However, Rams' Puka Nacua believes another underrated player is truly the best wideout in NFL history.
The NFL has had many talented players, but not everyone reaches elite status. For many fans, Jerry Rice is the greatest wide receiver of all time, but Rams’ Puka Nacua believes another player deserves that title.

Throughout NFL history, several players have excelled in their positions. Today, Tom Brady is widely regarded as the GOAT of football, but others have also dominated their respective roles.

For many fans and analysts, Jerry Rice is considered the best wide receiver ever. However, Rams star Puka Nacua believes someone else was better than the three-time Super Bowl champion.

Puka Nacua names the greatest wide receiver in NFL history—and it’s not Jerry Rice

A few years ago, when the NFL celebrated its 100th anniversary, the league released a list of the greatest players at each position. On offense, Jerry Rice was recognized as the ultimate wide receiver.

Rice had an astonishing career, mostly with the San Francisco 49ers. The wide receiver won three Super Bowl rings and established numerous records that still stand to this day.

However, as with any GOAT debate, not everyone agrees that Rice is the best wide receiver in history. Puka Nacua is one of those skeptics, as the Los Angeles Rams star believes another wideout deserves the top spot.

Speaking on the “Join the Lobby” podcast, Puka Nacua was asked about the best wide receivers in history. While he didn’t disrespect Jerry Rice, the Rams player confidently named Julio Jones as the true GOAT.

Julio Jones, former WR of the Atlanta Falcons

“The perfect mixture of like size and speed—he could run every route at his size,” Nacua said about the former Atlanta Falcons star. “A wide receiver body should look like Julio.”

Will Julio Jones play in the 2025 NFL season?

After spending the 2023 season with the Eagles, Julio Jones was unable to secure a team for the 2024 campaign. Although the wide receiver has not officially retired, that moment may not be far away.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/rams-qb-matthew-stafford-delivers-big-statement-on-arrival-of-davante-adams-ahead-of-2025-nfl-season" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20250324_BUS_362415_Davante-Adams-12.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="The Los Angeles Rams are excited about a strong campaign in the NFL, led by Matthew Stafford and the recent addition of Davante Adams to their offense.

According to rumors, Julio Jones is expected to announce his retirement this offseason. He just turned 36 and, while he could still play, his performances in recent years have declined, making it unlikely that teams would be interested in signing him.

The GOAT debate isn't limited to quarterbacks in the NFL, it extends to other positions as well, including wide receivers. Minnesota Vikings legend Randy Moss weighed in on that conversation.
Each year, the NFL showcases some of the greatest talents in football. While quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Montana, and Dan Marino often dominate the conversation, wide receivers have also built a strong following among fans. Legends such as Minnesota Vikings icon Randy Moss and San Francisco 49ers great Jerry Rice stand out, while today’s stars like Saquon Barkley and Davante Adams continue to captivate audiences.

When it comes to the NFL’s GOAT debate, the conversation often narrows to just a few elite candidates. For quarterbacks, Tom Brady is widely regarded as the frontrunner. However, in the wide receiver discussion, two names consistently emerge as the top contenders: Randy Moss and Jerry Rice.

While many argue that Rice holds the title, others believe Moss redefined the position. Back in 2023, Moss made his stance clear during an appearance on Cold As Balls with Kevin Hart.

“Hands down, I consider myself the greatest wide receiver to ever play the game,” Moss said. “That wasn’t a shot at Jerry. I still got respect and love for Jerry. But I just thought the way that I changed the game of football.” With that bold statement, Moss firmly positioned himself as the GOAT in the wide receiver debate, sparking further discussion among fans and analysts alike.

Former San Francisco 49ers player Jerry Rice looks on before a game between the 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium on November 17, 2024 in Santa Clara, California.

Moss reveals when he realized he was the best

When Moss ranked himself atop the GOAT wide receiver list, he also reflected on the moment he realized his own talent. “It was my freshman year,” Moss recalled. “At that time, the state had a lot of NFL players, mostly cornerbacks, who would come back to train for the upcoming season.”

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/nfl-news-aaron-rodgers-ignites-huge-controversy-as-he-chooses-retirement-steelers-or-vikings" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20250313_BUS_354951_aaronrodgers-2.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="In a stunning turn of events, Aaron Rodgers has set the NFL world ablaze with his decision to weigh retirement against an offer from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Moss continued: “I got to play against guys making over $3 million a month. They couldn’t cover me. They were trash-talking, and I just decided to cook them. In that moment, I knew I could do this, and that’s what happened afterward,” Moss explained.

The Hall of Famer also shared how his teammates often commented on his accent, playfully calling him “the country boy.” However, that never interfered with his performance. Moss delivered standout seasons not only with the Vikings but also during his stints with other franchises.

Moss vs. Rice: Who’s the greatest?

When comparing these two iconic wide receivers, key differences emerge that fuel the GOAT debate. While both dominated their respective eras, Moss and Rice brought contrasting styles to the game.

Key differences between Moss and Rice:

Style of play

Rice was celebrated for his precision route-running and consistency.
Moss stood out for his athleticism and explosive big-play ability.

Career trajectory

Rice enjoyed a longer, more consistently productive career.

Moss experienced a more volatile career, with periods of overwhelming dominance.

Statistics

Jerry Rice’s career numbers far surpass those of Randy Moss, solidifying his status as the most statistically accomplished receiver in NFL history.

Beyond the opportunity to win another Super Bowl ring, Travis Kelce has a rare chance to break one of Jerry Rice’s nearly untouchable postseason records. And with Patrick Mahomes throwing him the ball, he’ll have the perfect chance to make history.
Travis Kelce is on the verge of securing his fourth Super Bowl ring with the Kansas City Chiefs, alongside his quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has been instrumental in the franchise’s success. As the Chiefs chase their third straight title, Kelce also has a chance to break a Jerry Rice record for Super Bowl receptions.

According to the stats, Jerry Rice currently holds the record for the most career receptions in Super Bowl history with 33 across multiple appearances. Kelce, sitting at 31, needs just three more catches from Mahomes to surpass the legendary wide receiver’s mark.

Kelce shares a special place in the postseason with Jerry Rice, as they are the only players with over 2,000 receiving yards and 20+ receiving touchdowns (StatMuse). It’s worth noting that Rice took 15 years to achieve his 2,245 yards and 22 touchdowns, whereas Kelce has done it in just 10 years, with 2,039 yards and 20 touchdowns.

So far in the playoffs, Patrick Mahomes has thrown a total of 12 passes to Kelce, of which he has caught 9. Most of these receptions came in the game against the Texans, where he had 7 receptions out of 8 targets. In the more challenging game against the Bills for the conference title, he managed to catch only 2 out of 6 passes.

Patrick Mahomes (left) with Travis Kelce (right) – Kansas City Chiefs – NFL 2022

This isn’t the first time Kelce has surpassed Jerry Rice

During the 2024-25 playoffs, Kelce already broke one of Rice’s records, specifically for the most games with 100 or more receiving yards, totaling 9 games. The Chiefs’ tight end achieved this in the game against the Texans, posting 117 yards after catching all seven passes.

Other records Kelce could break

Rice holds several records that are still intact, including two notable postseason records. One is for the most career postseason receiving yards, and Kelce would need 207 to break that NFL record. On the other hand, Rice has another record that seems much easier for Kelce to break with Mahomes’ arm; he has 22 postseason receiving touchdowns, and the Chiefs player has 20, needing 3 to surpass it.

The three-time Super Bowl champion made it clear to the San Francisco 49ers' front office what they should do with Brock Purdy. It's likely that they will heed the words of Jerry Rice, given his significant history with the team.
Jerry Rice has once again spoken out about Brock Purdy, but this time his message was much clearer than before. Rice’s strong statement serves as a directive for the San Francisco 49ers’ front office to stop wavering about the quarterback’s future. The contract for the former “Mr. Irrelevant” is eagerly anticipated by all.

Rice advised the 49ers’ front office during The Morning Roast for 95.7 The Game to act decisively regarding their young quarterback. He stressed the importance of avoiding any uncertainty, saying, “If you feel like Brock Purdy is the quarterback for the 49ers, get it done. Don’t let it linger into training camp and all of that.” This message underscores Rice’s belief in Purdy’s potential and the need for the team to be confident in their decision-making.

His support for Brock Purdy doesn’t come lightly, as he emphasized the necessity of making a well-informed choice. “You gotta be sure. You gotta be positive. You cannot make a mistake if you don’t feel like this guy is completely what you need… I believe he is the guy.” With such strong endorsement from one of the greatest wide receivers of all time, the pressure is on the 49ers’ management to secure Purdy’s future with the team.

Despite the difficult 2024 season for Purdy and Co., it’s worth remembering that last season they were playing for a Super Bowl. Although they lost, one of the key factors in getting there was Purdy at quarterback. There are no official announcements about his contract extension yet.

49ers Earnings to Date

Purdy no longer has a contract with the 49ers, although it is likely that he will sign a new one. So far, his career earnings with the team have been only $2,885,346, considering he has led the franchise to the postseason twice. The only time he lost to make that phase of the NFL was in 2024 since becoming the starter for San Francisco.

Jerry Rice Praises Myles Garrett

Rice joined the conversation about Myles Garrett, delivering a sort of recommendation to the 49ers to use him to protect the offensive line points. “Man, that’s a dog. That’s a dog. Hey, that’s a no-brainer. If you can get that dog, you go get him because it’s only going to add to that defense. And you win championships with defense. I don’t care how potent your offense is and how many points you’re putting up, you’ve got to be able to stop the opponent, and he would be a great part to doing that.”

In the rich and century-long history of the National Football League, records have been set that defy the passage of time and the evolution of the game. These feats, achieved by legends of the sport, often seem unattainable.

From the astonishing 22,895 receiving yards amassed by Jerry Rice to the 297 consecutive starts by the indomitable Brett Favre, these milestones stand out for their impressive numbers and the stories of dedication behind them.

In a sport where competition is fierce and professional careers are often short-lived, these records stand as monuments to individual and collective greatness. Check out some of the most renowned and remarkable ones…

Jerry Rice’s career receiving yards (22,895 yards)

Current record: 22,895 yards

Record holder: Jerry Rice

Set: 1985–2004

Jerry Rice #80 of the San Francisco 49ers looks to the side while running during the game against the Chicago Bears in 2000. (Source: Jed Jacobsohn /Allsport)

Why is it unbreakable? Jerry Rice is considered the best wide receiver in NFL history, and his receiving yard record is simply astounding. Setting this mark of 22,895 yards requires not only a high level of technical and physical skill but also a consistency that few players achieve.

He played for 20 seasons and was a key part of the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive system, as well as other teams like the Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks. His longevity in the league, ability to stay healthy, and continued elite performance are the pillars of this record. The second-place holder in this category is Larry Fitzgerald with 17,492 yards, a significant difference that shows how difficult it will be to surpass this milestone.

Emmitt Smith’s career rushing yards (18,355 yards)

Current record: 18,355 yards

Record holder: Emmitt Smith

Set: 1990–2004

Running back Emmitt Smith #22 of the Florida Gators walks on the field during a game against theVanderbilt Commodores at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on October 14,1989. (Source: Allen Dean Steele/Getty Images)

Why is it unbreakable? Emmitt Smith, one of the best running backs in NFL history, set a record of 18,355 rushing yards during his career, a mark that few consider achievable today. To break this record, a running back would need to stay healthy and relevant for at least 15 or 16 seasons, something that’s increasingly difficult due to the nature of the position.

In the modern era, running backs tend to have shorter careers due to the high physical impact and team rotations. The evolution of the game and the preference for passing over running has also reduced the opportunities for a running back to accumulate such a high yardage total.

Tom Brady’s career passing touchdowns (649 touchdowns)

Current record: 649 touchdowns

Record holder: Tom Brady

Set: 2000–2022

Tom Brady #12 of the New England Patriots celebrates after a touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks in the second quarter during Super Bowl XLIX in 2015. (Source: Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

Why is it unbreakable? Tom Brady’s record of 649 passing touchdowns combines longevity and excellence. He played for 23 seasons in the NFL, allowing him to accumulate impressive numbers throughout his career, playing until he was 45 years old.

Maintaining such a high level of play for so long is exceptional. His longevity is a key factor: few quarterbacks manage to play at an elite level for more than 20 years, and even fewer remain productive into their 40s. Despite the talent of other quarterbacks in the NFL, Brady’s ability to achieve this record over such a long period makes it nearly impossible to break.

The Patriots’ 2007 regular season (16-0)

Current record: 16-0

Record holder: New England Patriots

Set: 2007

Quarterback Tom Brady #12 of the New England Patriots gestures during a game against the Buffalo Bills at Gillette Stadium on September 23, 2007. (Source: Jim Rogash/Getty Images)

Why is it unbreakable? The 2007 New England Patriots accomplished something only a few teams have managed: a perfect regular season, finishing 16-0. This record not only reflects a team’s ability to win every game but also their consistency, mental toughness, and flawless execution throughout an entire season.

Although the talent level in the modern era is higher than ever, it’s still extremely difficult for a team to win every game in a 16-game regular season due to the unpredictability of games, injuries, and fierce competition.

Most sacks in a single season (22.5)

Current record: 22.5 sacks

Record holder: Michael Strahan

Set: 2001

Michael Strahan #92 of the New York Giants celebraters after sacking Donovan McNabb #5 of the Philadelphia Eagles during the second period of the NFC Divisional playoff game in 2001. (Source: Ezra Shaw/ALLSPORT)

Why is it unbreakable? Michael Strahan, one of the greatest pass rushers in history, set this record in 2001, when the passing game wasn’t as protected as it is today. To reach this record, a player needs a rare combination of physical skills, instinct, and opportunity.

Today, quarterbacks receive more protection due to league rules, making it harder for a player to pressure them with the same intensity that he did. Additionally, offensive and defensive tactics have become more sophisticated, making a 22.5-sack record a monumental task.

Most career field goals (2,383 points)

Current record: 2,383 points

Record holder: Morten Andersen

Set: 1982–2007

Kicker Morten Anderson celebrates his record breaking field goal against the Carolina Panthers on December 24, 2006. (Source: Marc Serota/Getty Images)

Why is it unbreakable? Morten Andersen, one of the NFL’s most successful kickers, accumulated 2,383 points over his career. To surpass this record, a kicker would need to maintain an impressive success rate over an extremely long career.

Kickers don’t usually have long careers due to fluctuations in demand and competition for positions. Additionally, the frequency with which kickers attempt field goals has decreased, making it even harder to reach this mark.

Dick Lane’s 14 interceptions in a single season (1952)

Current record: 14 interceptions

Record holder: Dick Lane

Set: 1952

Dick Lane (Source: @DrakeRiggs_)

Why is it unbreakable? The NFL single-season interception record, set by Dick “Night Train” Lane in 1952, is one of the most remarkable and enduring milestones in the history of football. With 14 interceptions achieved in just 12 games, he set an almost unreachable standard, even in the modern era of the sport, where seasons are longer, and offensive strategies are more complex.

What makes this achievement so special is the context in which it was accomplished. In the 1950s, the game was much more focused on running plays than passing, which meant opportunities for defenders to intercept the ball were considerably more limited.

Brett Favre’s consecutive starts (297 games)

Current record: 297 consecutive games

Record holder: Brett Favre

Set: 1992–2010

Brett Favre #4 of the Green Bay Packers readies to throw against the New Orleans Saints during the third quarter on October 9, 2005. (Source: Harry How/Getty Images)

Why is it unbreakable? Brett Favre’s durability was one of his greatest strengths throughout his career. By maintaining a record of 297 consecutive games, he demonstrated impressive physical and mental resilience, overcoming countless injuries. In NFL football, players face a high risk of injury, making this record incredibly difficult to break. Staying healthy for so many years and continuing to play at the level that Favre did for almost 20 seasons is an accomplishment that few players could achieve.

Most touchdowns in a single game (7)

Current record: 7 touchdowns

Record holder: Sid Luckman, Adrian Burk, George Blanda, Y.A. Tittle, Joe Kapp, Peyton Manning and Nick Foles.

Set: 1943, 1954, 1961, 1962, 1969, 2013 and 2013.

Peyton Manning #18 of the Denver Broncos celebrates after throwing his fourth touchdown during the game against the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium on December 22, 2013. (Source: Scott Halleran/Getty Images)

Why is it unbreakable? The NFL record for touchdown passes in a single game, currently set at 7, is shared by several quarterbacks throughout history, each achieving this feat in different eras of football. This number has stood as the maximum since Sid Luckman of the Chicago Bears accomplished it for the first time in 1943.

Since then, players like Adrian Burk (1954), George Blanda (1961), Y.A. Tittle (1962), Joe Kapp (1969), Peyton Manning (2013), Nick Foles (2013) and Drew Brees (2015) have matched this milestone. Achieving 7 touchdown passes in a single game requires a unique combination of circumstances: a quarterback performing at their peak, an exceptionally efficient offense, and, in some cases, a vulnerable opposing defense.

Each of these games where the record was reached has its own remarkable story. For instance, Peyton Manning threw 7 touchdown passes during the 2013 season opener, when the Denver Broncos defeated the Baltimore Ravens, delivering one of the most dominant performances of his career.

Following a controversial offseason and a season start marked by ups and downs, a San Francisco 49ers legend has weighed in on Brandon Aiyuk's performance.
One of the top contenders for at least a playoff spot boasts one of the best receivers in the league. And by ‘boasts,’ we mean that Brandon Aiyuk has finally reached a massive contract renewal agreement with the San Francisco 49ers and joined the roster. His absence during training camps was felt in Week 1, but a franchise legend has delivered a clear message regarding the situation.

The contract renewal with the Bay Area franchise was delayed to the extent that the WR missed a significant portion of the training camp led by Kyle Shanahan, while most of his teammates, barring injuries, were present.

In their Week 1 debut against the New York Jets, the San Francisco 49ers secured a significant victory. However, Aiyuk appeared to be out of rhythm, and many observers took notice. On this situation, none other than Bay Area legend Jerry Rice delivered a clear message.

In an interview with @MorningRoast957, one of the greatest WRs in NFL history, Jerry Rice, commented on Brandon Aiyuk’s situation: “It’s going to take a couple games for Brandon Aiyuk. I think we are all in that healing process right now, because, man, it was crazy during the off season.“

Former player Jerry Lee Rice Sr looks on before Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium on February 02, 2020 in Miami, Florida.

Jerry Rice and his expectations for this season

With the goal of returning to the Super Bowl, the 49ers got off to a strong start on Monday Night Football and are positioned as serious contenders to go deep once again, though this time, better luck is anticipated.

Jerry Rice, one of the great legends of the Bay Area franchise, remains optimistic about what Shanahan’s team can achieve and hopes to see them lift the Super Bowl ring once again.

“I’m bleeding #49ers all the way. And we’re going to go win this thing this year. We’re going to take the whole thing. But people are not talking about us right now. We’ll just take the that professional approach and just win football games and get into the playoffs and get back to the Super Bowl and kick that door in.”

Peyton Manning reflects on Brandon Aiyuk’s performance

Unlike Jerry Rice’s perspective on Aiyuk’s performance in the game against the New York Jets, former Super Bowl champion Peyton Manning expressed his dissatisfaction with the WR’s performance.

On his ManningCast show former Denver Broncos QB stated: “There’s a reason for training camp. You need it. You need the reps. Get those contracts done earlier, so we can get in training camp [and] we don’t drop balls on opening night,”
