John Salley, a key member of the notorious Bad Boys Pistons, stirred controversy during a recent appearance on The OGs Show. While the late-’80s Pistons became synonymous with tough defense and physical play, Salley made the surprising claim that it was actually the Celtics who embodied that attitude first.

“The real bad boys were the Celtics. The Celtics had guys that would hit you, and you didn’t even know if they were on the team or not,” Salley said. “James Worthy even said it—you saw what they did.“ Salley also shared a harrowing encounter with NBA enforcer Maurice Lucas:

“Maurice Lucas tried to break my wrist and said, ‘I will break your wrist and your fingers. Don’t touch me anymore.’ And, you know, I’m playing defense, and I went like this, and I swear I almost lost my hand.” Salley said. “I pulled it back. He said, ‘I’m gonna break it.’ I’m thinking—why would you break my wrist over a basketball game?”

Isiah and Laimbeer’s Reaction

Salley also recalled how his Pistons teammates, particularly Bill Laimbeer and Isiah Thomas, responded to the Celtics’ hard-nosed style. “Bill and Isaiah were like, ‘Hey, they’re gonna call us bad boys? Fine. We’d rather be like the Raiders.’ And we took that on—we were tough. We understood that every play mattered. We didn’t take a single possession off.“

He added perspective on how the game has evolved: “Back then, before you would score, they’d run a play. You had to remember that play. Now, you don’t even have time to think. It’s almost like a baseball game—it’s about instinct and reaction.“

The Bad Boys legacy

The “Bad Boys” Pistons of the late 1980s and early ’90s are remembered as one of the most physically imposing and mentally tough teams in NBA history. With a core that included Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Dennis Rodman, Bill Laimbeer, and Salley himself, they built a reputation for punishing defense and no-nonsense basketball.

Under head coach Chuck Daly, Detroit embraced a gritty identity built on physicality, resilience, and tactical discipline. Their no-easy-buckets mentality became a league-wide talking point as they battled—and often beat—icons like Bird, Magic, and Jordan.

Detroit captured back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990, defeating the Lakers and Trail Blazers respectively. More importantly, they played the role of gatekeepers, forcing the young Bulls to toughen up before launching their own NBA dynasty. The Pistons didn’t just win titles—they changed the league’s perception of how championships could be earned.

Truth be told, there’s more than a handful of players that have put together a GOAT-kind of résumé. And there’s no point in comparing guys from different eras who also played different positions.

Nonetheless, there shouldn’t even be a debate at all, as no one will ever top Michael Jordan. At least, that’s what former Detroit Pistons ‘Bad Boy’ John Salley seems to think about this debate.

“Jordan was designed, the same way Jesus has been designed. So, people sit around and talk about Jesus Christ from 2019 years ago,” Salley said in an interview with Vlad TV. “Muhammad Ali is the greatest of all time.”

“The reason Michael Jordan is never going anywhere is because of Babe Ruth. Babe Ruth played in the 20s, or 30s, or 40s or whenever Babe Ruth played. And they still talking about Babe Ruth,” Salley added. “That’s what Michael Jordan is going to be in 50 years. He’s going to be the Babe Ruth of basketball. There’s only one Babe Ruth, and there’s only one Michael Jordan, and there’s one Jesus Christ and then there’s Michael Jackson.”

That’s a valid point right there. Jordan has a legendary aura, and even celebrities are starstruck just by being in the same room with him. That’s something not many people can make the rich and famous feel.

But then again, maybe we shouldn’t spend that much time debating whether one was better than the other. Fortunately, we were able to enjoy most NBA legends in our lifetime, and the league is currently flodded with elite talent.

Shaq was in his prime, and Kobe was up and coming. They were the perfect complement to each otherand the finest duo the league had seen since Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen did their thing.

However, their characters often collided, and their relationship ended abruptly. In fact, former teammate John Salley recently revealed how an unreleased article got Shaq to threaten to kill Kobe and forced his way out of the team.

DJ Vlad: “So basically, in the statement from Kobe, and it was an unmitigated slaughter calling out Shaq for everything, like he had saved this up for years:

Shaq not being in shape, Kobe considered himself much more committed to the game, Kobe lived and breathed it and was obsessed and Shaq was not. Kobe said a guy selling donuts at the 7/11 had more pride in his job than Shaq did.And they didn’t put the article out because of Jim Gray’s relationship with Shaq. But Shaq found out about it and he went ballistic.

John Salley: And then Shaq left at the end of that, he wanted to be traded. And they were able to do a deal with Miami and he realized that Kobe was the future of the Lakers.

DV: Yeah, I guess that Gray had reached out to Shaq for a response but he refused and he threatened to kill Kobe.

JS: I tell you, Shaq said it too. Nobody that we know that we worked with was as committed to this game as Kobe. But think about what happened; because it caused a reaction in Shaq we had never seen.

Kobe says that, article doesn’t come out. The next summer, Shaq comes out on September 8th, thin as we’ve ever seen him since he was drafted. And Shaq is in the best shape we’ve ever seen him. But it took that.”

It’s unfortunate that we didn’t get to see them dominate for as long as they could’ve. But, sometimes, these things need to happen for stars to flourish and build a path of their own. At least, they were able to bury the hatchet before it was too late.
