There aren’t many better voices to weigh in on the position. During an appearance on the All The Smoke podcast, Miller was asked to name the five greatest point guards ever — a task he took seriously.

“Magic [Johnson], Isiah [Thomas], [John] Stockton, [Jason Kidd],” Miller said. “I didn’t see Oscar Robertson play.” With Miller naming only legends from previous eras, the hosts pushed him on whether he would include anyone from the modern game.

“I was a Steve Nash fan,” Miller admitted. “Who shoots 90-50-40, you know what I’m saying? I was a Steve Nash fan. But you’ve got Steph [Curry]. You gotta put Steph in there. Isiah, Steph, Magic, Stockton, and Kidd.”

Andre Miller’s journey

Miller was selected by Cleveland with the eighth overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft after a standout college career at Utah. He remains one of the few players ranked among the top 15 all-time in both assists and steals — a testament to his steady brilliance and high basketball IQ.

The Hall of Famer recently stirred debate with his comments on The Maverick Approach podcast, describing the modern NBA as “softer” and taking aim at the league’s growing acceptance of load management. Stockton questioned how this impacts the competitive spirit, pointing out that today’s stars can take “20 days off” strictly for rest.

“I do think it’s softer. You have guys that can take 20 days off, you know, what they call load management. Coming on, I’m going to take a few weeks off, work off, you know. Well, who’s going to feed us then? You know what I’m saying?” Stockton said.

“These guys do it, and they’re supposed to be examples, and the league allows it. I mean, load management, things like that, the salaries are off the charts. The style of play is—you know—these kids are talented, man. They can make shots.”

“And because they make shots, everybody thinks they should be taking them. And so, it’s just boom, boom, throw it out. There’s less strategy. There’s less physicality. The safety, again—kind of back to the COVID thing—safety is more important than the game.”

It’s a hard-hitting critique that resonates with some fans. While teams today still employ offensive strategies, Stockton believes the freedom given to nearly every player to shoot from deep has shifted the game away from the old “specialist” roles that once defined certain positions.

The truth is, the NBA is less physically punishing than it was in Stockton’s playing days, but it has also reached unprecedented levels of skill and efficiency.

When it comes to “physicality,” there’s a fine line between tough basketball and outright dangerous play. Stockton’s NBA era featured reckless fouls, cheap shots, and frequent fights—moments that may have looked gritty but didn’t necessarily elevate the game’s quality.

By eliminating unnecessary violence, today’s teams have allowed players to focus more on skill, athleticism, and creativity, shifting the emphasis from intimidation to execution.

Back in 2016, ESPN released its list of the top 10 point guards in NBA history. Johnson was the undisputed No. 1 selection at the time. While he graciously accepted the honor, he took issue with the placement of his fellow Hall of Fame point guard Isiah Thomas, who came in fifth behind Curry, Stockton, and Oscar Robertson. Magic quickly took to social media to voice his frustration, making it clear he believed Thomas deserved far more respect.

“ESPN ranked the Top 10 PGs of all time & they have Isiah Thomas ranked 5th. There’s no way Stockton & Curry are better than Isiah,” Johnson posted. “Let me remind everyone, young and old, I played against Isiah Thomas when he was hurt & hobbling on one leg… and Isiah Thomas still scored 25 points in one quarter in the NBA Finals!”

At that point in time, Curry had already built an impressive résumé, but his full legacy had yet to be established. While his game had changed the league, Johnson still did not consider him the greatest point guard of all time. Today, the argument for Curry at the top of the position is much stronger. But does Stockton truly have the case to rank above Thomas?

The legacy of Thomas as a candidate for greatest PG

Isiah Thomas is widely regarded as one of the most complete point guards in NBA history, thanks to his rare blend of leadership, vision, and competitive fire. Drafted second overall by the Detroit Pistons in 1981, Thomas immediately transformed the franchise into a perennial contender. Polynice stunned listeners of The Odd Couple podcast when he unveiled his all-time starting five and boldly included Stockton among the elite. Polynice leaned into a different philosophy: longevity, all-time records, and statistical dominance.

“It’s Magic and Bird — they go hand in hand,” Polynice said. “So for me, I’ve got Stockton in my top five, because I know what my criteria are. I’ve got Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar too.” His approach quickly drew attention for its old-school rationale and the deliberate exclusion of both LeBron James and Michael Jordan.

Polynice made it clear that leaving out two of the game’s most celebrated icons wasn’t a knock on their greatness, but a reflection of his personal definition of legacy. “I use facts, not fiction,” he said. “Stockton holds two records that will never be broken. People who do things like that have to be revered. Come on, man. You’ve got to look at it in its totality. You all are focused on highlights, who made the flashiest plays — but that’s not the point. It’s the totality of everything.”

Olden Polynice’s NBA journey

Olden Polynice, a 6-foot-11 center born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, carved out a 15-year NBA career as a tough, physical presence in the paint. After moving to New York, he starred at All Hallows High School before committing to the University of Virginia, where he helped lead the Cavaliers to the 1984 Final Four and earned First Team All-ACC honors in 1986.

Polynice was selected eighth overall by the Chicago Bulls in the 1987 NBA Draft but was immediately traded to the Seattle SuperSonics in the deal that sent Scottie Pippen to Chicago. He spent his early years in Seattle before landing with the Los Angeles Clippers, where he had his most productive season in 1990–91, averaging 12.3 points and 9.1 rebounds.

He later played valuable minutes for the Detroit Pistons and Sacramento Kings, establishing himself as a rebounding specialist and dependable interior defender. In Detroit, he averaged 7.3 points and 6.2 rebounds during the 1992–93 season before anchoring Sacramento’s frontcourt for five seasons.

Polynice returned to Utah in 1999, replacing Greg Ostertag as the starting center during the 1999–2000 season. He contributed 5.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while helping the Jazz to a 55–27 record and a No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. He later had brief second stints with both the SuperSonics and Clippers before retiring in 2004. He finished his career with 8,265 points and 7,110 rebounds across 1,058 games, averaging 7.8 points and 6.7 boards per contest.

During an episode of the Club 520 podcast, former Lakers guard Gary Payton reflected on his NBA career and revealed his pick for the greatest point guard of all time: “John Stockton, by far. He was just a little more crafty; everybody thought he was dirty, but we were just s*****d. We didn’t know how to play. It took me six years to figure him out… I really love playing against players like that. Because it got me more of the IQ about the game.”

While John Stockton remains a reference for many, he rarely comes up in debates about the greatest point guards ever. That is mostly because Magic Johnson dominated the court and transformed the position along his career. Because of that, most people expect a different name in that conversation. Still, Stockton left a lasting impact that many tend to overlook.

Throughout his career, the Utah Jazz legend played 1,504 games. He averaged 13.1 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 10.5 assists per game. He also holds the NBA records for most assists and steals. But his influence went far beyond the numbers. He controlled the pace and improved his team every night. Even so, Stockton never won an NBA championship. And that is why many do not include him among the top players at his position.

Ex-NBA player Steve Kerr breaks down John Stockton’s playstyle

Steve Kerr appeared in 910 NBA games, with the bulk of his career unfolding during the 1990s. Throughout that time, he often went head-to-head with John Stockton. While some former players have labeled Stockton a dirty player, suggesting he had a knack for delivering elbows without drawing fouls, Kerr holds a different opinion.

In a 1997 interview with the Chicago Tribune, he offered a thoughtful perspective. “I’ve never felt John was dirty. I’ve always felt he was extremely tricky and crafty…If you turn your head, he’s back-cutting for a layup, if you lose your balance a little, he’s going to push off you to get to the basket…He’s as smart a player as there is and awfully talented as well because he’s so good with the ball and is a great shooter.“

Kidd made the comments during an interview on The Dan Patrick Show, where he was asked to name, in his opinion, the best passer of all time. “Best passer. I’m gonna go with (John) Stockton,” he said after pausing briefly to think.

Explaining what made the Utah Jazz legend so special, Jason was clear. “I think the bounce pass, he had big hands, could take it off the dribble, could pause with it. Some would say it’s maybe double-dribble,” the Mavericks coach joked. “I think he knew how to manipulate the ball off the dribble and being able to find his target and he had some pretty good targets.”

That joke led Patrick to ask: “When did carrying become legal in the NBA?” The former point guard, again with a smile, replied: “In 1960. It’s always been a part of the game.” The host continued on that theme. “Now you can have the hand on the bottom of the ball and then go…” (he mimicked an upward motion with his hand). “Was it (Allen) Iverson who started it?”

Jason again thought for a moment and gave his take. “I don’t think it was Iverson. I think it’s the guy we were just talking about. If you look at Stockton, he knew how to manipulate the dribble,” said the NBA champion with Dallas in 2011. “Was he dirty?” Dan Patrick asked about Stockton. “He was smart,” Kidd replied with another grin.

The case for John Stockton

It’s no surprise that Jason Kidd named John Stockton as the greatest passer of all time. After being selected by the Utah Jazz with the 16th overall pick in the 1984 NBA Draft—the same class that featured Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and Hakeem Olajuwon—the point guard gradually earned his spot until solidifying his role in the 1987–88 season.

Starting that year, Stockton averaged more than 10 assists per game for a full decade, earning nine straight NBA assists titles from 1988 through 1996. That’s not all—he still holds the record for most assists in a single season (1,164 in 1990–91) and the highest assists-per-game average for a season (14.54 in 1989–90).

Those numbers make John Stockton the NBA’s all-time assists leader by a wide margin. The point guard totaled 15,806 assists over his 19-year career with the Jazz. In second place is Chris Paul, who currently sits at 12,499, making him the top active player in that category.

Jason Kidd was an elite passer, too

For years, Jason Kidd was the closest challenger to John Stockton in the assist rankings—until Chris Paul passed him during the 2024–25 season. In his 19 NBA seasons, the legendary point guard totaled 12,091 assists across stints with the Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns, New Jersey Nets, and New York Knicks.

That figure places Kidd third on the all-time list, behind only Stockton and Paul. In addition, the two-time Olympic gold medalist with Team USA led the NBA in assists five times—1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2004. With the exception of his final title, all those seasons overlapped with Stockton’s career, which further underscores Kidd’s remarkable consistency and skill.

Given the lopsided scoreline through the first three quarters, Nikola was rested to prioritize upcoming games. As a result, he played just 32 minutes at Paycom Center, finishing with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists.

That effort allowed Jokic to climb to 49th on the NBA’s all-time playoff scoring list, with a total of 2,440 points—surpassing Stockton, who scored 2,436 playoff points with the Utah Jazz between 1984 and 2003. Jokic’s next target is Los Angeles Lakers icon Byron Scott, who sits at 2,451 points.

The Serbian center has reached these numbers over 10 seasons with the Denver Nuggets. Notably, the team didn’t make the postseason in his first three years, only qualifying in his fourth NBA campaign—and they’ve done so consistently for the past seven seasons.

Jokic is closing in on the top ten among active players

While rising in the all-time playoff rankings, Nikola Jokic also solidifies his position as the 12th-leading scorer in the NBA Playoffs among active players. Closest to him is Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown, who currently ranks 47th with 2,523 points.

At the top, of course, is LeBron James with 8,289. Rounding out the active top ten are Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson, Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, Jayson Tatum, and Jimmy Butler.

Additionally, Jokic climbed to 52nd on the all-time playoff rebounding list thanks to the 8 rebounds he grabbed in the loss to the Thunder. He had been tied with A.C. Green at 1,084 and now moves past the former Los Angeles Lakers forward, as well as former Indiana Pacers player Dale Davis.

Although he reached new milestones during the game against OKC, Nikola Jokic was far from his best. Part of the Serbian center’s struggle came from the Thunder’s defensive strategy, which limited his freedom on the court.

However, Nuggets’ Aaron Gordon voiced frustration with the referees’ treatment of Jokic. “If they’re going to let ’em push him, shove him, put two hands on him, root him out, use the knee, elbows—all types of stuff they’re doing to him—that’s not necessarily legal,” the forward told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne. “Jok’s got to play through it. If they’re not going to call it, they’re not going to call it. But they’re fouling the guy.”

Recently, Stockton stirred debate during an appearance on The Huddle, where he addressed the perennial question of who the greatest player of all time is. When asked to choose among Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant, Stockton refused to commit to any of the three and instead delivered a surprising take: one of them wouldn’t even make his top five.

“Well, I wouldn’t use those three,” Stockton remarked. “Some of those three—or one of those three—wouldn’t even be in my top five. I hate that question, and I get asked it all the time. Who’s anybody to say, ‘Well, it’s either of those three?’”

Stockton went on to emphasize overlooked legends: “Wilt Chamberlain—they changed the rules to negate how dominant he was. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the leading scorer and shot-blocker in the history of the game for 40 years. Now, I know LeBron passed him, but he passed him with three-point lines and rule changes.” He concluded, “There are so many guys I would put in that first handful of five. I’m not certain the names everyone suggests are always the ones I’d include.”

Stockton’s take on what defines greatness

In a separate interview with The Universe Galaxy, Stockton elaborated on what separates the greats, emphasizing passing as a hallmark of true basketball brilliance. “Passing transcends every era,” Stockton explained. “It involves so much—it shows a player truly understands the game.”

Based on this philosophy, Stockton hailed Magic Johnson and Larry Bird as two of the greatest players ever. “Magic Johnson, for me, and Larry Bird—those two could pass, they could score, they could do whatever was necessary at any given time,” Stockton said.

“Well, you say MJ is the best player you’ve ever seen. I didn’t say that,” Malone told Adam Fisher of Bleacher Report in 2010. “I don’t consider him the best player I’ve ever seen.”

Some might speculate that Malone’s comments stem from the sting of losing to Jordan’s Bulls in two consecutive Finals during the late 1990s. Yet, Malone’s criteria for evaluating greatness seem rooted in a different era. When discussing his pick for the GOAT, Malone leaned toward Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell, two titans of the game’s early years. “It’s debatable that it could be Wilt Chamberlain or Bill Russell,” the 14-time All-Star said.
