Throughout his tenure in Buffalo, Josh Allen has faced heavy scrutiny for his inability to guide the team to a Super Bowl. Last season, he seemingly had a golden opportunity to make a deep run, yet the signal-caller and his squad failed to capitalize on the situation.

The Bills’ key offseason addition that will impact Coleman

Hoping to remedy these offensive struggles, the Bills front office secured the services of a dynamic new weapon this offseason. Buffalo completed a major trade with the Chicago Bears to acquire wide receiver DJ Moore, landing a proven top target for Allen but directly altering the trajectory for Keon Coleman.

Following Moore’s arrival, the wide receiver depth chart has undergone a significant shift. Coleman now finds himself slotted as the WR4, sliding down a spot and making it even more challenging to carve out consistent targets in what is shaping up to be a decisive season for his future in Buffalo.

Reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN, the outside linebacker will now play for the Buffalo Bills on a one-year deal after visiting them last week. Danna is a very good player. While not racking up huge numbers, Danna was also reliable to make key plays for the Chiefs back in the day.

The Bills need that. Their pass-rush has been an issue for quite a while, and while Danna is unlikely to get 10+ sacks, he can get you 5-7 in key moments. The Bills hope that a better defense will take some pressure off of Josh Allen’s shoulders.

The Bills have tried many pass-rushers to no effect

Von Miller and Joey Bosa were huge names that the Bills brought in recent years to bolster their pass rush, and while not bad, they weren’t the difference-makers the Bills thought they could be.

This year, they did the same thing again by signing Bradley Chubb to a three-year, $43.5 million deal. However, now they got Danna too, and recently-drafted TJ Parker out of Clemson. The Bills are hoping at least one of them becomes a threat to opposing quarterbacks.

The Bills have a solid roster to work with

Buffalo strengthened its main needs this offseason. As you can see, the pass-rush has been bolstered. However, Josh Allen also got a major upgrade in his receiving core, as the Bills brought DJ Moore to the team, a certified WR1.

They also used a second-rounder in corner Davison Igbinosun to improve their secondary. All in all, they addressed their main needs in hopes of providing Josh Allen with a roster capable of going to the Super Bowl.

According to Jeremy Fowler, this is the first reported visit since he was released by the Chiefs in February. Danna, who is 28 years old, had spent all his career in Kansas City prior to his release.

The Bills ranked 20th in sacks in 2025, so bringing an experienced, proven winner like Danna into the team will surely help on improving that statistic. The Bills need good depth in the defensive end position and Danna could fill that hole. Josh Allen could have more leeway on offense as well.

Danna’s career numbers are not as impressive, but he is a force

Danna has been in the NFL since 2020 and has racked up 21.5 sacks during that time. He was a regular starter for the Chiefs since 2023, but given the fact that they’ve restructured their defensive line, Danna was a needed release.

The Bills could definitely take advantage of that. Danna just had one sack last season, but it was a down year for basically all of the Chiefs team. That could help the Bills though, as they could sign him with a discount, and then see him flourish once again.

The Bills defensive line has great upside

The Bills use a 3-4 base formation. The Bills just brought Jim Leonhard as their new defensive coordinator. He is coming from the Denver Broncos, so he is likely to use a very aggressive pass rush without much blitz.

Allen wants to remove a big thorn from his side

He has a point, actually. Gardner-Johnson has played for Super Bowl contenders throughout his whole career. In fact, he is a Super Bowl champion after all, when he played with the Eagles. Now, he is joining another contender, but only now is he getting these questions.

The Bills need to keep their strength on their secondary

The Bills had the best passing defense in the NFL last season. However, they still wanted to strengthen the unit. Hence, they bring a top-tier, champion-caliber safety in Gardner-Johnson. Also, they signed safety Geno Stone. They also sent Taron Johnson to the Raiders and released cornerback Dane Jackson and safety Taylor Rapp.

Last year, the Bills only allowed 156.9 passing yards. Getting the best of this free agency will only help them maintain this level of play. After all, Josh Allen can play superhero at quarterback, but if his defense allow him to not be in shootouts on a weekly basis, that’s the best.

Will the Bills defense overcome the McDermott departure?

This offseason, the Bills decided to part ways with long-tenured head coach Sean McDermott, in favor of offensive-minded Joe Brady. However, Sean McDermott was the defensive mind behind that. Yes, he had flaws (their rushing defense was not good by any means), but he was the one in charge.

Now, new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard was previously the defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator of the Denver Broncos. Which means, he has expertise on that unit. However, his challenge will be transforming the run defense into a good one.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Bills are releasing Curtis Samuel. The nine-year veteran spent two seasons with the Bills, but last year, he only played six games for seven catches and 81 yards. He became a non-factor for Josh Allen and the team as he also spent quite a while on Injured Reserve.

Samuel is now headed to free agency, where the 29-year-old will try to go to a team where he can shine. His best year was back in 2020, where he got 851 yards in 15 games with the Carolina Panthers, where he was the teammate of DJ Moore, the one who indirectly caused his release from the Bills.

Samuel is a collateral cap casualty

The Bills will save $6 million in 2026 salary cap space. Unfortunately for Samuel, the fact that Moore arrived on the team meant that one wideout was going to be let go. Unfortunately, it was him. Samuel struggled to stay healthy and struggled with his production as well.

The move helps alleviate the Bills’ salary cap constraints. The Bills also released cornerback Taron Johnson, which will save a further $1.9 million in cap space. Hence, the Bills are trying to create room for bigger moves by releasing expendable players.

Bills WR room is heavily paid

The Bills were the second-highest-paid WR room in the NFL, only behind the Bengals. With this move, they will go down to the fourth. They went from $59.4 million spent on WRs to $53.4, putting them below the Dallas Cowboys ($56.7m) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ($56.3m).

The difference is that when you think about the Bengals, Cowboys, and Buccaneers, you think of elite WR rooms that warrant that kind of money. With the Bills, it’s just not the case, as they’ve been a below par unit for years.
