The 33-year-old striker and 3rd all-time leading scorer for the USMNT is not on the 2022 World Cup squad.
Striker has been a major issue for Gregg Berhalter’s side, the coach has tried Ricardo Pepi, Jordan Pefok, Matthew Hoppe before settling on his World Cup roster with Haji Wright, Jesús Ferreira, and Josh Sargent.

Combined those six forwards add up to 18 goals to Jozy Altidore’s 42. A string of injuries and poor play has seen Altidore be brushed aside on the national team.

Altidore has scored crucial goals for the USMNT but never in a World Cup, he played in 2010 and 2014. Here is the reason why Jozy Altidore is no longer on the USMNT.

Why is Jozy Altidore missing the Qatar 2022 World Cup?

Jozy Altidore was a major presence in the front line for Toronto FC in MLS scoring 62 goals, then a move to the New England Revolution in 2022 and Altidore was a shell of his former self, scoring 1 time in 17 matches.

Jozy Altidore in Liga MX (Getty Images)

After a positive move on loan to Puebla where he scored 2 goals in 6 matches, Altidore’s future is very much in the air. On the USMNT it seems that Jozy has played his last match, last being called up in 2019 where he played 5 times and scored against Panama in the 2019 Gold Cup.

The 32- year-old former USMNT forward could see his time in Toronto FC finished as the club may buyout his contract or trade him.
The jury is out on Jozy Altidore’s body of work in MLS and Toronto FC. In total Altidore, who signed as one of the league’s most expensive players, scored 62 goals in 139 games, but the last two seasons has seen a big decline for the former New York Red Bulls prodigy.

Altidore played all of 16 games this season and scored 4 goals, in 2020 the big forward played 13 games and scored only 2 goals. Injuries have sidelined his career tremendously, and that may have been enough for the Toronto FC brass who recently named Bob Bradley as the team’s new head coach.

According to Tom Bogert, Jozy Altidore and former league MVP Alejandro Pozuelo could be on the move from Toronto FC, as Bob Bradley will want to lay his stamp on the team. Here is what solutions there is on the table with Jozy Altidore.

As reported by Tom Bogert, Altidore is under contract in 2022, but a buyout or trade is not out of the question. Toronto FC club president Bill Manning stated on Altidore’s future, “Jozy is under contract… Everything is open right now with us,” with regards to a buyout or trade.

With Bob Bradley taking over and a last place finish in 2021, Toronto FC will be shaking things up, Altidore’s injury history could be key in TFC moving on from the big American. While MLS MVP Alejandro Pozuelo’s contract is up after next season stated, “You can ask the sporting director later. I hope I can be here a lot of years. … I’m happy here. With a new project, new coach, I’m very excited. I hope I can be here more years.”

Jozy Altidore blasted against Taylor Twellman on Twitter after the former New England Revolutionplayer and current soccer analyst criticized the USMNT U-23's for missing the Olympic Games.
Jozy Altidore suddenly heatedthe social media. The Toronto FC and US National Team‘s striker reacted in a controversial way after Taylor Twellman criticized the USMNT U-23’s for failing to book an Olympic Games spot.

The Revs’ historic leading goalscorer has expressed that the US U-23’s elimination in the Olympic Qualifiers was “patheticand laughable”, and also disregarded “excuses” like players being unavailable or without playing minutes. In One Soccer Today, analyst Oliver Platt addressed Twellman’s comments, and later Altidore blasted towards the former USMNT striker.

Altidore’s reaction against Twellman

Jozy Altidore didn’t holdanything backand went harsh on his Twitter account. The current US National Team’s player replied to the video posted by One Soccer in which analysts were commenting about Twellman’s latest sayings and wrote: “Taylor twellman national team career was laughable. Beasley should be that analyst or a Mia Hamm. Twellman need to be on extra time radio with Bobby warshaw. He a white boy with connects. Stop giving him a platform.”

Altidore’s response took many people by surprise, as he wasn’t singled out up to then. All of a sudden, he blasted against the current soccer analyst heavily.Bobby Warshaw, former player as well and current writer, analyst, and author, answered: “Big fan of Jozy and athletes speaking their minds.
Many might be shocked to see Jozy Altidore so high up on this list, but in 2015 MLS wanted to bring home some of the 2014 World Cup heroes and Altidore was up to a return, especially considering he scored only 1 goal in 42 outings in the EPL. Altidore has been making this salary roughly since 2015!

3. Michael Bradley, Toronto FC – $6.5 million

Michael Bradley is one of the U.S. Men’s National Team all-time best players. He was playing very well in Serie A for Roma, although Bradleywas not an out and out starter when MLS called in 2014. Again, in 2014 MLS was looking to bring home prominent American players and paid them very well to return. It’s up to debate if Bradley has been worth such a high salary.

2. Javier Hernández, LA Galaxy – $7.2 million

The crown jewel of MLS. Chicharito is the league’s prize catch, it took a long time to get Javier Hernández to MLS, but he is finally here. The Mexican internationalis on the Galaxy books at 7.2 million and the club’s 2020 season was one of their worst ever. Chicharito scored an abysmal 2 goals in 12 outings.

1. Gonzalo Higuaín, Inter Miami – $8.8 million

<img loading="lazy" alt="Gonzalo Higuaínisthe highest-paid player in MLS at over $8 million a year. (Getty)

Who is the highest paid MLS player? Gonzalo Higuaín. The Argentine striker is the league’s highest-paid player, he has signed a two year deal with Inter Miami for $8.8 million a year, according to the Miami Herald. The 33-year-old forward is a proven goalscorer having scored over 100 goals for Real Madrid, 71 for Napoli, 48 for Juventus. While his first season ended with him testing positive for coronavirus and missing the team’s critical playoff game, Higuaín was a much-needed boost for a club going in the wrong direction. For now, his numbers are lukewarm, 1 goal in 9 games, but with a proper preseason Pipita could light up the league in 2021.
