Peterson, a 6-foot-6 guard out of Prolific Prep, had offers from Kansas State, Ohio State and USC, too. He ultimately decided to join Bill Self, one of the best coaches in college basketball, to try to create something special at Kansas.

He is entering his freshman season with high expectations, as even Self admitted he will be asked to carry the team, something that Andrew Wiggins, Joel Embiid, or Frank Mason III weren’t asked to do during their college days. Peterson doesn’t seem to be running away from the challenge and his recent performances in practice have drawn a lot of attention.

In a recent X post, ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla recalled a practice session from Peterson that caught his attention. He labeled the guard’s performance as “ridiculous.”

“Wanted to give it 24 hours for me to digest what I saw at ⁦[Kansas] practice but ⁦[Darryn Peterson] hit EIGHT straight 3’s, some highly contested, in an intra-squad scrimmage yesterday. In addition to having an incredible feel & IQ for the game, THAT was ridiculous,” Fraschilla wrote. ⁦

Peterson starts his college career as one of the two best players in the country, constantly fighting for the No. 1 spot with AJ Dybantsa. The upcoming season will likely define which player will go as No. 1 overall in the 2026 NBA Draft.

Self saw Norm Roberts call it a career after last season, following a 14-year stint in Kansas. The coach celebrated Roberts’ career, while admitting that things wouldn’t be the same.

“This is a bittersweet moment for me because Norm and I have been together since 1995,” Self said. “Norm has played a key role to our success at all of the stops we have had together, especially here at Kansas.”

More recently, he saw one of his former players turned coach getting a call from an NBA franchise.

Bill Self reflects on losing assistant to the NBA

The Jayhawks’ coaching staff suffered another loss ahead of the upcoming season. They will challenge for the title without Chase Buford, who left to join the Denver Nuggets in the association.

“Chase just got hired by the Nuggets … You know, he got an assistant coach’s job, which is great for him and (I’m) happy for him. He did a really good job here,” Self said per On3. “I’m in the process of looking into some different things, but I haven’t done anything yet. I feel like I have the scope kind of narrowed down of what I think would be good for us, but I haven’t done anything yet.”

Buford spent one season in Kansas, helping the team post a 21-13 record (11-9 in the conference). He had played from 2007 through 2010 with the Jayhawks, helping Bill Self win the 2008 national championship.

Self said in July that he felt “strong” while thanking the doctors and people who helped him during that moment. He didn’t forget about the Jayhawks’ offseason and teased fans about a strong season.

The symptoms he experienced are now gone after Self had two stents inserted last month. He is well on track to be ready for the upcoming season, where the Jayhawks will have one of the best players of this class on the roster, Darryn Petterson.

Bill Self shares update after heart procedure

During a Friday conversation with the media, Bill Self shared another update on his health. The 23-year veteran coach explained how he approached the post-surgery process and what the doctors told him to do to avoid those scares.

“I did take three or four days off (following the surgery), but I’m feeling pretty good,” Self said. “They’ve asked me and told me that I probably could have some improvements in my lifestyle and life choices, primarily with food and exercise. I know you guys have never heard that but it is beneficial to feeling good and healthy. They got me doing some stuff, but I’m feeling good.”

The Jayhawks made it to the NCAA tournament last season, but they only lasted one round, as John Calipari’s Arkansas Razorbacks beat them in the first round.

So, the Jayhawks and the coaching staff have had more than enough time to evaluate him on and off the court and know what they were going to get next season.

With that in mind, legendary coach Bill Self shared his honest thoughts on his new star recruit, gushing about his talent and how he will accommodate the team around him.

“He’s ultra talented,” Self said, per Through The Phog. “You know, the thing about Darryn is we gotta have a team…That understands where the talent is and [ensure] we can play to his talent. He’s also got to learn how to raise the level of other people’s talent around him. He’s gifted, I mean, there’s. No denying that. He’s gifted, with the ball in his hands.”

Of course, it takes way more than just talent to make it in this line of business, but Peterson also has an impressive work ethic, and more importantly, he wants to be coached.

Some believe that he will end up the season as the first-overall pick in next year’s NBA Draft. It will take a lot for that to happen, but he certainly has that type of potential.

Leipold, responding to critics who doubted Kansas’ potential earlier in the season, emphasized the team’s growth and resilience. “As I told them, I’m extremely proud of their resolve and resiliency,” Leipold said. “There was a lot of negativity hanging around about what was wrong with this program, but they owned it, kept working, stuck together, and now they can see the results of that. For us to play as well as we did today is another sign of that.”

Leipold also addressed how the team maintained focus during tough times earlier in the season. “It’s tough when you’re close but not getting the results,” he admitted. “But this group owned it. They said, ‘Yes, we can be better,’ and they stuck together. That resolve has made them a special group.”

The win against Colorado sets up Kansas to finish the regular season on the road against Baylor, with Leipold calling the current streak “something truly special.” He added, “We still have a chance to reach a pretty special goal, but we have to go and play another good football team next week.”

Leipold: “We’re Playing Solid Football”

When asked if Kansas might be the best team in the Big 12, Leipold deflected, choosing instead to focus on the team’s progress. “I’ll let you write about that,” he said. “I don’t know how everyone else is playing, but from the Houston game on, we talked about making the second half of the season a season of its own. I think we’ve done that.”

Leipold acknowledged the challenges Kansas faced, including a tough Big 12 schedule. “You play four ranked teams in a row—that’s not always common,” he said. “We’ve played one of the more difficult schedules in the conference this year, and for us to perform this well down the stretch, I’m really proud of this team.”

Controlling the Line of Scrimmage and Dominating Possession

Kansas’ success against Deion Sanders’ Buffaloes started at the line of scrimmage. Leipold highlighted the team’s ability to control the game through physical play. “We talked about it this week—winning at the line of scrimmage was crucial, and we did that today on both sides of the ball,” he said. “To rush for over 300 yards, hold the ball for 40 minutes, and never punt—it was truly a start-to-finish performance.”

Running back Deon Neil had a standout game, with Leipold praising his resilience and clutch plays. “For him to put together a game like this, especially in his last home game, really puts an exclamation mark on his career,” Leipold said.

The Razorbacks thought that this 2022 regular season was going to be as good as last season but things were not as good as they expected. At the end of the regular season the Razorbacks won six of twelve games and only 3 of 8 within the SEC.

The Jayhawks suffered after winning the first game in October, after that victory they lost three games in October and another three in November for a total of six losses and one win against Oklahoma State.
