John Harbaugh is already issuing warnings to divisional rivals, so getting the offensive coordinator hire right is key for the team. Both candidates have been head coaches in the NFL, as they are Kliff Kingsbury and Brian Callahan, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Kingsbury coached the Cardinals for four years but during his college days, he coached Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech. More recently, he was the Washington Commanders OC for the last couple of seasons. As for Brian Callahan, he worked with Joe Burrow during his time with the Bengals as OC, but then was the HC of the Titans for a year and a half.

Kingsbury is an intriguing option

Kingsbury should be a more temptiong option than Brian Callahan. Kingsbury’s offense on the Commanders was very explosive. Callahan’s resume is saved by Burrow. However, the QB hid Callahan’s flaws and those were exposed during his Titans days. Kingsbury is more creative and also knows the AFC East pretty well.

Also, Jayden Daniels is a very mobile quarterback and so is Jaxson Dart. He would also have a good RB room and pretty good, young wideouts. Callahan failed to develop Cam Ward in Tennessee and/or establish a proper WR1 for the rookie signal-caller.

Harbaugh is giving this franchise an overhaul

The Giants have had only one winning season in the last nine years. In fact, they’ve only won more than six games once in that span too. Hence, a complete new regime is needed to revamp the franchise and that’s what Harbaugh is doing.

The next few months will be key as he assess the talent on the roster, establishes the full coaching staff and prepares for the NFL Draft, where the Giants have the fifth-overall pick. In total, the Giants will have seven picks, though three are in the sixth round.

According to Charles Goldman of AtoZ Sports, Mahomes said, “I love Coach Nagy… He gave me a lot of ideas to be better as a person and as a quarterback… Wishing him the best throughout this head-coaching process…” It’s a very correct and diplomatic answer from a guy who seems to do no wrong in the NFL.

Mahomes is recovering from a torn ACL surgery. This year the Chiefs offense wasn’t great but that hasn’t stopped Nagy from getting calls to be a head coach again. This wouldn’t be the first time Nagy is a head coach in the NFL. It would also not be something that takes the team by surprise, as Andy Reid already made a decision on the next step if Nagy leaves the Chiefs.

Nagy’s numbers are not precisely great

The Chiefs offense took a hit during the three years Nagy has been the OC of the team. Prior to Nagy, the Chiefs had five years of being a top six scoring offense. Since Nagy arrived, the best they’ve ranked is 15th.

As a head coach, Nagy was at the Bears from 2018 to 2021. His record was 34-31 but the numbers are inflated by his first season where he ended 12-4. He then had two 8-8 seasons and and a 6-11 one before getting fired.

The Chiefs should be better off

Without Nagy, the Chiefs could potentially have the best OC opening in the NFL. Anyone would be dying to coach Patrick Mahomes. With names like Mike McDaniel, Kliff Kingsbury and others ready to take great OC jobs, you’d assume the Chiefs would be the most desirable destination.

Kingsbury is a name to monitor, he revalued himself in Washington and he’s previously worked with Mahomes at the collegiate level. Hence, that could be an enticing move for all parties involved.

As a matter of fact, the Chiefs already parted ways with a quarterback before Mahomes returns to activity. However, Reid may have a big decision to make around the franchise QB with his coaching staff facing potential changes.

The Chiefs reportedly know Matt Nagy might not to continue with Reid as his contract is expiring, which might force Kansas City to search for a new offensive coordinator in 2026. And Mahomes could have a strong influence in that decision.

Kliff Kingsbury is a free agent after parting ways with the Washington Commanders, and the Chiefs emerged as a possible suitor in case Nagy ends up leaving the organization.

Speaking on 96.5 The Fan Tuesday, Nate Taylor of ESPN suggested that if Mahomes wants Kingsbury as the Chiefs’ next offensive coordinator, it would be difficult for Reid to go in another direction.

Kingsbury’s connection with Mahomes before landing in the NFL

In the event Nagy doesn’t come back, Mahomes pushing for Kingsbury would make sense. We’re talking about his head coach at Texas Tech, where the quarterback shined before being drafted by Kansas City in 2017.

Kingsbury also forged a great reputation in the NFL as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, where he unlocked the best version of Kyler Murray in 2020, before doing an impressive job with Jayden Daniels as the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator in 2024.

Those credentials have made Kingsbury a name to watch as he’s leaving the capital city, with many offensive coordinator as well as head coaching opportunities around the league. Only time will tell us whether Nagy—who’s interviewing with the Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, and Cardinals this week—creates another opening in Kansas City.

Kliff Kingsbury is the actual Commanders’ offensive coordinator. However, back in the day he was the Texas Tech head coach, where Mahomes played. When asked about the relationship between the two, Mahomes said, “He’s one of the first people that truly believed in me playing the quarterback position. He gave me a ton of advice of refining me, but letting me still just be me and play to my strengths… A great person that I still stay in touch with.”

Under Kingsbury, Mahomes led the Big 12 twice in completions, pass attempts, passing yards and passing touchdowns. In fact, during Mahomes’ last collegiate season, he averaged 421 yards per game.

Kingsbury’s redemption arc is incredible

After his Texas Tech span, the Arizona Cardinals hired Kingsbury as head coach. His tenure there was not successful at all. In fact, his reputation suffered quite a hit. Now, he is once again a very respected name in the NFL thanks to his work as the Commanders’ offensive coordinator.

With him calling plays, the Commanders were a top five scoring offense last year and they are top 10 right now even with all their injuries. Kingsbury has developed a very creative offense and his scheme is deep in levels and versatile too.

Kingsbury will face a tough task this Monday

Kansas City has a very good defense and Mahomes is playing his best football since 2022. Hence, Kingsbury’s task right now is simpler said than done. He needs to overcome a top defensive unit, and keep the pace with one of the best quarterbacks of all time at Arrowhead.

Not only that, but he will have to do so with a backup QB. Jayden Daniels was ruled out of the game due to a hamstring injury so it will be Marcus Mariota going under center. With an 0-3 career record against Mahomes, Mariota will try to pull an incredible upset with the help of Kingsbury on the sidelines.

The Washington Commanders were really close to making it to the Super Bowl last season. Now, instead of progressing with quarterback Jayden Daniels, it seems like their whole offseason has been a long contract dispute with wide receiver Terry McLaurin. After the matter has dragged long enough, one of the coaches on the team gave some urgency to the situation.

Much of the team’s success was because of their explosive offense. However, offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury made clear that he needs all the players on the field, not outside of it.

Kingsbury is urging the players to get on the field. “I think we’re kind of at that point to where we need to start getting those guys. When they’re available, see them out there and jelling to see where we are as an offense.” The offense has been hit with other receivers getting injured. However, McLaurin is the best wideout on the roster, and he’s healthy. As long as the team doesn’t come to an agreement, it’s tough to envision the wideout going back to training.

Kingsbury’s reputation made a huge resurgence

Kliff Kingsbury’s story in the NFL is incredible. He became the Cardinals head coach after five years on the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Kingsbury was paired with number one overall pick, Kyler Murray. However, after four seasons with below par results, he was fired. His reputation was in serious scrutiny.

However, after one year as senior offensive analyst at USC, the Commanders hired him as offensive coordinator. His work last season was so good, that he is now seen as one of the best playcallers in the NFL.

Playcalling can be good, but if there are no weapons…

You can see Kingsbury is not happy with the actual situation. McLaurin is a key component on the Commanders’ offense. Other weapons like Noah Brown, haven’t been able to practice due to injury. This means Kingsbury’s been working with an incomplete unit the whole offseason.

Not only that, Jayden Daniels is a very young quarterback and he would like to avoid the sophomore slump. However, by not being able to work fully with his weapons, Daniels might suffer. This can’t fall into Kingsbury’s responsibility, as his job is limited because of front office issues.

But not all teams have the same expectations. That’s why they bring in head coaches with a specific purpose, either to lead them to contention or at least put together the building blocks of a winning project.

Needless to say, that doesn’t happen all that often, which is why the coaching carousel is a never-ending revolving door. With that in mind, we’ll talk about three HCs entering the NFL season on the hot seat.

3. Matt Rhule

He’s been in a tough situation given the Carolina Panthers’ struggles to find a franchise QB, and Christian McCaffrey’s health hasn’t done much to help. Still,Matt Rhule has failed to silence his doubters.

Truth be told, Rhule’s so-called defensive expertise is nowhere to be found, either. So, now that he’ll have his third starting QB in as many years (fifth if you count Cam Newton and P.J. Walker), patience may finally start to run out.

2. Kliff Kingsbury

Kliff Kingsbury’s shortcomings in the second half of the season have become a worrisome trend, and it’s been like that since his days in college. He’s a great offensive mind, but he’s failed to make timely adjustments when his team has needed him the most.

The Arizona Cardinals enter a make-or-break season after spending a lot of money on Kyler Murray. They need to prove that they can keep up with contenders after putting together an offensive juggernaut of a team. Otherwise,Kingsbury can close the door on his way out.

1. Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy wouldn’t even have a job if it wasn’t for that Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers. But the game has changed, the league has changed, and the only thing that hasn’t changed is his mistakes.

McCarthy’s questionable play-calling hurt the Dallas Cowboys more often than not last season. They have a suitable replacement in Dan Quinn, and Jerry Jones shouldn’t hesitate to pull the plug if they struggle to keep up in the NFC East.
