Real Madrid aren’t the only ones missing a key piece for the big game in Catalonia, as Dani Olmo isn’t playing for Barcelona, either. However, his absence is for a completely different reason than Vini Jr.’s, as the Real Madrid star is serving a harsh suspension imposed by LaLiga authorities.

Vinicius has been handed a four-game suspension by the Spanish football federation after his incident-filled outing against Villarreal in Matchday 8 of the 2026-27 LaLiga. Vinicius served the first game of his ban during Madrid’s 4-1 win over Sevilla, but has three more games left before he can return, and thus can’t play against Barcelona.

Why has Vinicius Jr. been suspended?

During Real Madrid’s 1-0 win against Villarreal in Matchday 8, Vinicius Jr. pulled Nathan Saliba’s hair. The foul initially went unnoticed by the referee, and Vinicius even assisted Jude Bellingham on what would have been the second goal of the game.

However, after a VAR review, the goal was overturned, and the Brazilian forward was sent off. Vini Jr. didn’t take the decision lightly and confronted the referee. As a result of the entire sequence, Vinicius was handed a four-game suspension: two matches for the hair pull and another two for his reaction to the referee.

Despite the club’s best efforts to appeal and reduce the punishment, the federation’s board stood firm and upheld the four-match ban, keeping Vinicius out of El Clasico at Spotify Camp Nou.

When can Vinicius return?

With Real Madrid set to play Racing Santander and Valencia on Nov. 1 and 7, respectively, Vinicius is eligible to return for Real Madrid on Nov. 21 against Celta de Vigo.

Because Vinicius’ suspension was imposed by the Spanish football federation, it only sidelines him for domestic competition. He can still play against AEK Athens in Matchday 4 of the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League (Nov. 4), just as he did against RB Leipzig during the week leading up to El Clasico.

Key takeaways

• Vinicius Jr. is suspended for Real Madrid’s El Clasico clash against Barcelona.
• A four-game suspension was handed to Vinicius Jr. following incidents against Villarreal.
• Eligible to return Nov. 21, Vinicius Jr. can face Celta de Vigo for Real Madrid.

While Vinicius is out for El Clasico at Spotify Camp Nou due to a harsh suspension imposed by the Spanish football federation, Olmo is sidelined for health reasons. Barcelona‘s defeat at Parc des Princes against PSG in the UEFA Champions League didn’t just snap Hansi Flick’s side’s unbeaten run in the 2026-27 season.

Barcelona’s deflating loss in Paris also raised concerns inside the locker room. Dani Olmo was subbed off early during Barcelona’s 4-2 loss to PSG and was subsequently ruled out of El Clasico against Real Madrid in Catalonia.

Dani Olmo’s status

As confirmed by the club, Olmo has sustained an injury to his left adductor muscle. According to the tests carried out on Olmo, the 2026 World Cup champion is expected to miss an entire month of action.

Although the return timeline is subject to change, Olmo’s initial injury update suggests he will not only miss El Clasico but could also be sidelined for upcoming fixtures against Aston Villa in the UEFA Champions League on Nov. 3 and Atletico Madrid in LaLiga on Nov. 8.

Olmo’s numbers in 2026-27

Coming off a dream summer in North America with the Spanish national team, Olmo made sure not to miss a beat with Barcelona. So far in the 2026-27 season, Olmo has appeared in 12 games, scoring one goal and providing four assists. It remains to be seen how Barcelona will fare without him, but if there’s one team in the world with enough firepower to weather the storm, it’s the Cules. The lineups for Barcelona vs. Real Madrid will be stacked regardless.

Key takeaways

• Dani Olmo was subbed off early against PSG and ruled out of El Clasico.
• A left adductor muscle injury sidelines Dani Olmo for an entire month.
• Dani Olmo has 12 appearances, one goal, and four assists in 2026-27.

Injuries will play a major role in shaping today’s battle. Real Madrid will be without starting goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, leaving Andriy Lunin to deputize between the posts for a match that remains the crown jewel of the European soccer calendar.

Barcelona enters the contest with key attacking absences of its own. Most notably, playmaker Dani Olmo is sidelined after picking up an injury during the club’s midweek UEFA Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

Real Madrid faces its own firepower deficit, as talisman Vinicius Jr. serves a suspension following his red card against Villarreal. Yet even with several marquee figures watching from the sidelines, both squads boast more than enough world-class talent to make this an enthralling tactical contest.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid: Confirmed starting lineups

With generational talents Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe headline the opposing attacks, the stakes are massive as both sides look to claim three critical points and seize control of the LaLiga title race.

Here are the confirmed starting XIs for El Clasico:

• FC Barcelona
  • Goalkeeper: Joan Garcia

  • Midfielders: Rodri, Pedri, Fermin Lopez
  • Forwards: Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Anthony Gordon

  • Defenders: Federico Valverde, Dean Huijsen, Ibrahima Konate, Marc Cucurella
  • Midfielders: Bernardo Silva, Aurelien Tchouameni, Arda Guler, Jude Bellingham
  • Forwards: Yan Diomande, Kylian Mbappe

While an October clash rarely decides the domestic title outright, El Clasico remains the ultimate measuring stick for both powerhouses, a high-stakes proving ground that consistently showcases soccer at its most electrifying.

Key takeaways

• Thibaut Courtois is going to be replaced by Andriy Lunin for Real Madrid.
• Dani Olmo will miss El Clasico after an injury against Paris Saint-Germain.
• Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. is suspended due to a red card against Villarreal.

Barcelona return to LaLiga action as the league leaders with a perfect 21 points from seven matches, having won every game so far. Hansi Flick‘s team has also been the competition’s most productive attack, scoring 31 goals and conceding only seven. A victory over Getafe would allow Barça to keep their perfect league record intact and strengthen their position at the top of the table.

Getafe arrive in 11th place with eight points, after two wins, two draws and three defeats. Jose Bordalas‘ team will be looking to build on its 1-0 victory over Malaga in its last league game, but the challenge is significant: Getafe are still searching for their first away goal in LaLiga this season.

Their defensive organization will be crucial against a Barcelona side averaging more than four goals per league game. The timing of the match also matters for Barcelona.

Raphinha has been one of the main attacking figures and was named LaLiga’s Player of the Month for August after scoring five goals and providing two assists during the opening part of the campaign.

LaLiga‘s official match page lists Barcelona with five goals scored and none conceded in their opening league match in the current fixture data, while the latest results confirm the team’s second consecutive victory.

Rayo Vallecano arrive in a very different position. The Madrid side have one point from their first two matches, drawing 1-1 with Alaves after opening the campaign with a defeat.

Jose Mourinho‘s second spell in charge began with a 2-1 victory away to Espanyol, so another three points would give Madrid a perfect start to the campaign.

For Mourinho, this is an early opportunity to show how quickly his new-look Real Madrid can establish itself. The club went into the season after two consecutive trophyless campaigns and has made significant changes to the squad, with the Portuguese manager expected to bring greater tactical discipline and structure.

Real Madrid already showed an attacking threat in the win at Espanyol, registering 15 shots and eight on target, while Kylian Mbappe was among the team’s key attacking outlets.

Real Sociedad, meanwhile, need a response after opening their league campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Real Betis. Pellegrino Matarazzo‘s side failed to score in Seville and now faces one of the toughest away assignments in Spanish soccer.

The situation is complicated by injuries, particularly at right-back, where Jon Aramburu is currently the only natural senior option available after Alvaro Odriozola‘s injury.

Real Madrid (4-2-3-1): Thibaut Courtois; Marc Cucurella, Dean Huijsen, Ibrahima Konate, Trent Alexander-Arnold; Federico Valverde, Bernardo Silva; Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Yan Diomande; Kylian Mbappe.

Barcelona begin their 2026-27 LaLiga title defense against Elche at the Martinez Valero, with Hansi Flick‘s side looking to make an immediate statement after winning the championship last season.

The Catalan club finished first in 2025-26 and are targeting a third consecutive league title, while Elche are entering a new campaign focused on establishing themselves in the top flight under Martin Anselmi.

For Elche, this is a major early test and an opportunity to make the most of their first home game of the season. The Martinez Valero is expected to be packed with more than 30,000 spectators, creating a demanding atmosphere for the reigning champions.

Elche opened the campaign with a 1-1 draw against Deportivo La Coruna, so a positive result against Barcelona would provide a significant boost to Anselmi’s project. Barcelona, meanwhile, enter their first official LaLiga match after an active summer transfer window.

The champions added Rodri, Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Joao Cancelo, among others, as Flick looks to strengthen a squad that will be competing on multiple fronts. Several new arrivals could make their competitive debuts, although Rodri and Cancelo are not expected to be available yet. Frenkie de Jong isn’t playing against Elche today due to injury.

Elche (5-4-1): Matias Dituro; Lucas Cepeda, Victor Chust, Federico Redondo, Marco Affengruber, Buba Sangare; Marc Aguado, Gonzalo Villar, Gerard Gumbau, Ali Houary; Dani Escriche.

And while Bellingham settled in perfectly at the Bernabeu, the same cannot be said about Trent Alexander-Arnold yet. That’s why Bolavip asked McManaman not only about Jose Mourinho‘s return to Madrid, but also about his expectations for the former Liverpool star this year.

“I think Trent Alexander-Arnold will be fine, he had a couple of injury problems last year,” McManaman responded to Bolavip during a press conference with international media outlets organized by LALIGA and ESPN.

“He never went to the World Cup and was unhappy about that, but he’s had a really good summer off, working very hard. And I think the structure with Jose Mourinho will really help. I think it will help the fact that he’ll have a right midfielder, who we think will be Yan Diomande, in front of him. I think that structure will help.”

McManaman also optimistic about Anthony Gordon’s potential at Barcelona

McManaman can relate to Alexander-Arnold, even if the former found success with Madrid earlier than the latter. Both share a strong Liverpool connection, having made it all the way to the Reds’ first team from the academy before taking their talents to La Casa Blanca.

Another fellow countryman McManaman can identify with is Anthony Gordon, even if the winger is playing for Real Madrid’s lifelong rivals Barcelona. McManaman also had encouraging words for Gordon as he enters his first season in LALIGA.

“As for Anthony Gordon, I wish him all the best, he’s from the same area where I grew up in Liverpool, he’s from an area called Kirkdale,” McManaman said. “So I wish him all the best, I know he played a couple of preseason games and he’s impressed. He’s quick, he’s strong, and the longer he stays at Barcelona, I think he’ll excell. So I wish him all the best, I hope he has a fantastic season.“

McManaman, the first English player to win the Champions League with a non-English club, has been a source of inspiration for new players moving to Spain. His comments should only give Alexander-Arnold and Gordon all the confidence they need to have a strong season in Spain.

Puyol, who captained Barcelona from 2004 to 2014, knows perfectly well what is like to face a Madrid side led by Mourinho. In his response to Bolavip, the legendary defender made it crystal clear how highly he thinks of the Portuguese manager.

“Well, we’re talking about a great manager,” Puyol said when asked by Bolavip about his memories facing Mourinho and how dangerous his return to Madrid can be for Barcelona. “I met him at Barcelona when I was young and coming through the academy, and when I made it to the first team, we could already see that he knew a lot about football.

“Then he went to other clubs, built a good résumé, and eventually arrived at Real Madrid, where Real Madrid had a very good team. We were going through a very strong period, and I remember a great rivalry and many individual battles. The Barça-Madrid rivalry is huge, but in those years, on top of that, it was Guardiola against Mourinho, Messi against Cristiano, and two great, great teams.

“So we’ll see how he does now. I still think Barcelona have a very good team and will be able to have a good season, but it’s clear that one of their biggest rivals is Real Madrid, and with Mourinho they could be stronger.”

McManaman believes that Mourinho ‘needs to finish above Barcelona’

McManaman, who made 158 appearances for Real Madrid from 1999 to 2003, has a deep understanding of the expectations surrounding Mourinho in his second stint at the club.

“He needs to win,” McManaman responded to Bolavip. “It’s simple as that. He needs to beat Barcelona, he needs to win the league. I don’t necessarily think he needs to win the Champions League, but he needs to finish above Barcelona.

“He’s been brought in because the last two years have been disappointing. So he needs just to get the best out of the players, but more importantly, it’s to finish above Barcelona. He has to do it instantly. Real Madrid can’t go three years without winning anything. So Jose has to hit the ground running and he has to be successful straight away. That’s what he’s been brought in for.”

McManaman is being realistic. Those are the standards at Real Madrid. If not, just ask Carlo Ancelotti. Carletto may have led the club to its 15th UEFA Champions League/European Cup title in 2024, yet one bad season the next year sealed his fate. Well, it was a bad season for Real Madrid’s standards. Finishing second in LALIGA and failing to win either the UCL or Copa del Rey led to Ancelotti’s departure and Xabi Alonso’s hiring in 2025.

Alonso didn’t last long though, and his replacement, Alvaro Arbeloa, couldn’t deliver major silverware either. Mourinho, who won three titles (LALIGA, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup) in his first stint in Madrid, now has to bring back glory days immediately.

Puyol, who also talked about Spain’s future, knows Mourinho’s return poses a threat to Barcelona and McManaman understands that winning the Champions League might be a tall ask, but anything less than a league title could be all she wrote for the Special One. Needless to say, this LALIGA season will be must-watch for world soccer.

The curtain is coming down on the La Liga season, but there’s still plenty left to decide on the final Matchday. Now, the focus shifts to the battle further down the table, where Valencia remain alive in the race for a UEFA Conference League berth.

Their European hopes depend on results elsewhere, but the equation is simple: anything less than a win would end their chances of sneaking into continental competition.
