The Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson spoke about the real problem he faced with Michael Jordan and Larry Bird during his NBA career.
When discussing NBA legends who defined an era and inspired an entire generation of superstars, three names immediately come to mind: Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird. These players are often debated as some of the greatest in history, and Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic recently revealed what his biggest rookie problem was.

The storied rivalry between Johnson and Bird began in 1979, when Johnson led his Michigan State Spartans to a 75-64 victory over Larry Bird and the Indiana State Sycamores in the NCAA National Championship. That win not only set the stage for a decades-long NBA rivalry but also attracted numerous shoe offers for the 19-year-old Magic.

Johnson admitted he made a colossal mistake while evaluating his rookie shoe deals ahead of his NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers, who selected him first overall in the 1979 NBA Draft, according to the Earn Your Leisure podcast.

“Converse offered me the most money. And so, when you’re Black and you’re broke, you take the most money, right? So I decided to go with Converse,” Johnson said. “But Phil Knight came in and said, ‘I can’t offer you the same amount of money as Converse, but I can give you something called stock.’ And I passed on the stock, not knowing anything about it at 19. You know how much that stock would be worth today, 46 years later? A billion-five.”

Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, NBA legends.

By passing on the stock deal, Magic missed out on a potential fortune and an opportunity to get an edge over his rival, Bird. Meanwhile, Michael Jordan signed an unprecedented five-year, $2.5 million deal with Nike in 1984, including a 5% royalty on shoe sales—a contract that would forever change athlete endorsements and the business side of sports.

How early decisions shaped Magic, Bird, and Jordan’s legacies

Magic Johnson’s rookie year represented more than the start of a Hall of Fame career; it was a defining moment in the business of basketball. Choosing the immediate payout from Converse over the long-term stock option from Nike illustrates the tough financial decisions young athletes face. At 19, Magic prioritized what he understood—cash—but the decision had far-reaching historical consequences.

In light of this ongoing debate, the Los Angeles Lakers icon recently offered his surprising take on the discussion.

Larry Bird’s trajectory to the NBA offers a different lesson. His rivalry with Magic, ignited in the 1979 NCAA National Championship, shaped not only their NBA careers but also the cultural perception of player legacies. Bird’s strategic approach to his career and endorsements contrasted with Magic’s rookie mistake, showing how off-court decisions can define public image and long-term influence.

Michael Jordan’s rookie endorsement deal with Nike in 1984 further transformed the landscape. His five-year, $2.5 million contract with a 5% royalty on shoe sales set a new standard for athlete earnings and magnified the consequences of Magic and Bird’s early choices. Together, these three legends demonstrate that legacy in the NBA isn’t determined solely on the court; early career decisions and foresight can enhance—or limit—the impact of a legendary career.

Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird revealed the real reason behind his NBA retirement.
Larry Bird, a Boston Celtics legend and one of the most complete players in NBA history, defined an era with his basketball IQ, lethal shooting, and fierce competitiveness. Toward the end of his career, he admitted that his body was no longer responding the way it once had, acknowledging the physical toll that led him to make the difficult decision to walk away from the game.

Bird announced his retirement in the summer of 1992, but for a man who had once lived and breathed basketball, the decision was anything but easy. That final season became a grueling stretch, where even the simplest movements felt draining.

He continued to show up for practices, laced up his sneakers, and put on the Celtics uniform just as he had since 1979—but none of it felt the same anymore.

“Maybe that’s why when I walked up to the podium at my press conference in the Boards and Blades Club at the Boston Garden and finally said out loud it was over, I felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off my shoulders,” Bird wrote in his 1999 book Bird Watching. “I can’t tell you what a relief it was not to have to push myself through all that pain anymore. I can honestly say I hated basketball at that point,” he added.

Bird’s final seasons in the NBA

Bird’s final seasons in the NBA were marked by a mix of competitive brilliance and undeniable physical decline. After dominating the league throughout the 1980s and earning three MVP awards, Bird began to feel the wear and tear of years at the highest level. Still, he remained a key contributor for the Celtics—leading with sharp shooting, unmatched court vision, and a relentless winning mentality, even as his body started to betray him.

From 1989 to 1992, Bird battled chronic back problems that required extensive treatment before and after games. At times, he would lie flat on the locker room floor during halftime just to manage the pain. Despite those issues, he still averaged over 19 points per game during his final seasons—proof that his touch as a shooter and playmaker never disappeared. His presence on the floor continued to command respect, from both teammates and opponents alike.

In the 1991–92 season, Bird earned one final selection to the All-Star Game, though his physical limitations were increasingly evident. That same summer, he joined the iconic “Dream Team” at the Barcelona Olympics, capturing a gold medal alongside the greatest collection of talent in basketball history. While his on-court production was modest, his leadership and experience were vital in the locker room. It served as a symbolic farewell to the international stage and a tribute to his legendary career.

Bird officially announced his retirement on August 18, 1992. His departure left a massive void not only for the Celtics, who had built a dynasty around his brilliance, but also for the NBA, which lost one of its most cerebral and technically gifted players. He acknowledged that the constant pain and physical limitations made it impossible to maintain the standard he set for himself. Even with the bittersweet ending, Bird’s final seasons solidified his legacy as an unrelenting competitor—one who, even in decline, never stopped giving everything he had on the court.

During Larry Bird’s tenure as the head coach of the Indiana Pacers, a promising young player reignited fan excitement. Recently, this former player shared some memorable words from the legendary Bird that caught many by surprise.
After concluding his illustrious playing career, Boston Celtics icon Larry Bird transitioned to coaching, taking the helm of the Indiana Pacers from 1997 to 2000. His final season was particularly electrifying for fans, thanks to the rise of a promising young talent who injected new energy and optimism into the team. In a recent interview, the former Pacers player shared a fascinating anecdote involving Bird that resonated with fans everywhere.

Jonathan Bender, in a candid conversation with Scoop B, reflected on the strong faith Larry had in him. “I don’t know if people realize how much Larry believed in me,” he shared. Then, he added, “He would always say, ‘When you’re healthy, you’re going to change this league.’ I just never stayed healthy long enough.”

Unfortunately, the promising trajectory of Bender’s career was hampered by injuries; he managed to surpass the 50-game mark only twice before a series of setbacks ultimately reduced his time on the court. Despite entering the league as the 1999 NBA Draft fifth pick, Jonathan’s best season only averaged 7.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 0.8 assists, which was precisely the 2001-02 season in which he played the most games with 78.

Bender announced his retirement in 2006 at just 25 years old while playing for the Indiana Pacers. However, he made a surprising comeback during the 2009-10 NBA season with the New York Knicks. Determined to conclude his professional career on his own terms, he described this season as therapeutic, ultimately finishing his professional journey at the age of 29.

Jonathan Bender #24 of the Indiana Pacers moves the ball during the game against the Chicago Bulls at the United Center on February 10, 2004 in Chicago, Illinois.
Jonathan Bender reveals how he reinvented his career path after retiring from the NBA

Jonathan Bender refused to let his career-defining knee injuries dictate his future. Instead, he transformed his pain into a burgeoning business venture. In 2013, Bender unveiled the JB Intensive Trainer, a product designed to help athletes strengthen their knees and sidestep the arduous path he once traveled.

During an interview with Scoop B, Bender revealed that former NBA players like Penny Hardaway and Amar’e Stoudemire reached out to praise the efficacy of his innovation. Their endorsements underscored the impact of his creation, fueling his professional resurgence. According to Fortune, the JB Intensive Trainer soared past $500,000 in sales during its launch year, signaling a resounding success.

Following Cooper Flagg's standout performance in his last Summer League game, comparisons to Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird have been rampant. However, a former teammate of Isiah Thomas remains skeptical about the validity of these parallels.
Since his breakout performances with the Duke Blue Devils, Cooper Flagg has carried considerable hype around his name. After joining the Dallas Mavericks, he delivered a commanding performance in the Summer League that drew comparisons to Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird. However, a former teammate of Isiah Thomas expressed reservations about it.

“You put too much pressure on these guys. Number one, the great white hype, the great white hope. And so to me, Bird was Bird. They’ve been looking for the next Larry Bird for I don’t know how many years,” Olden Polynice said, via Byron Scott’s Fast Break.

Former Pistons center Olden Polynice wants to ease the pressure on Cooper, not discredit him. The intense focus on him may actually be counterproductive, considering he is still awaiting his debut at the elite level and likely requires substantial development. For instance, after scoring just 10 points in his Summer League debut, he faced a wave of criticism, with some even labeling him overrated.

“Magic became Magic through hard work, and Bird became Bird. Jordan became Jordan. Dominique became Dominique. They worked hard. They became the players. So we’re seeing them, we’re seeing the finished product. These guys now, they’re being created before they even played. We don’t even know if this dude’s body can hold up for 82 games,” Olden Polynice affirmed on Byron Scott’s Fast Break.

Moreover, Cooper Flagg openly admitted he is still acclimating to the fast-paced competition of the elite level. For that reason, Olden’s perspective has been warmly embraced by fans across the league. Nevertheless, his unique potential was on full display when he dominated the court, scoring 31 points against the San Antonio Spurs in the Summer League, hinting at a promising future in league history.

Cooper is undeniably stirring up excitement in Dallas. According to ESPN, they decided to keep him out of the Summer League team. While they have not disclosed the specific reasons, it’s likely a strategic move to prevent injuries and protect his long-term potential, acknowledging the valuable talent they have on their team.

A three-time NBA champion shared the logic behind Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird’s approach to shooting and why he was regarded as one of the greatest shooters of all time.
The Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird wasn’t flashy. He didn’t rely on athleticism or vertical leaps to make his mark on the game. What made him truly elite was his simplicity—a style that stripped the game down to its core fundamentals. Bird approached basketball with the cold logic of a master technician, choosing substance over spectacle every single night.

Throughout his Hall of Fame career with the Boston Celtics, Bird shunned the flashiness that began to define the NBA in the 1980s. While players around the league leaned into highlight-reel dunks and in-your-face swagger, Bird kept his game grounded. He rarely dunked, yet remained devastatingly effective. Critics called him unathletic, but that label missed the point. Bird was methodical, clinical, and relentless. And that’s why he remains one of the greatest shooters in NBA history.

Former Detroit Pistons forward and three-time NBA champion John Salley offered insight into what it was like to face Bird at his peak. “People would say stuff about him not being athletic,” Salley recalled. “I’d be like — I don’t think they’re playing the same guy I’m playing. He was quick to get around you, quick to talk smack, and quick to put two points in your face.” For Salley, Bird’s decision not to dunk wasn’t a limitation—it was a choice rooted in efficiency. “Why jump to dunk when the goal is simply to put the ball in the basket?” he added.

In an era dominated by explosive finishers like Julius Erving, Dominique Wilkins, and Michael Jordan, Bird’s refusal to rely on raw athleticism made him stand out. Yet opponents quickly learned that his restraint was never a weakness. It was part of a deliberate strategy. Bird controlled the pace of a game, dictated possessions, and found ways to win without ever playing above the rim.

Bird vs Salley: A rivalry built in the playoffs

The rivalry between the Celtics and Pistons in the late 1980s produced some of the most intense basketball the Eastern Conference has ever seen. At the center of those showdowns were Bird and Salley, representing two contrasting forces in the NBA. Boston leaned on Bird’s brilliance and championship pedigree, while Detroit countered with youth, athleticism, and the defensive tenacity of the “Bad Boys.”

Their head-to-head clashes reflected those contrasts. Bird was the thinking man’s assassin—deadly from mid-range, unshakably poised, and always one step ahead. Salley, by contrast, brought a modern mix of length and agility, thriving in the Pistons’ bruising, physical system. The 1987 Eastern Conference Finals became an iconic series, with Boston edging out Detroit in seven games. Bird’s legendary steal and assist to Dennis Johnson in Game 5 became an instant part of NBA folklore.

Detroit would get its revenge the following year, knocking out the Celtics in 1988 and eventually capturing back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990. By then, Bird was slowed by injury and age, no longer able to single-handedly carry Boston through the playoffs. Yet the mutual respect between him and Salley endured. The Pistons had finally become the dominant force in the East, but Bird’s presence still loomed large over every matchup.

In the years since, Salley has continued to praise Bird’s brilliance—particularly his mind for the game. He’s recounted how Bird would talk trash, predict exactly what he’d do, and then execute it flawlessly. “There was no stopping him,” Salley once said. “You could only hope to slow him down.” Their rivalry was fierce, but the admiration was real. And today, their matchups remain etched into NBA history—reminders of an era when intelligence, toughness, and execution were everything.

The Los Angeles Lakers defeated Larry Bird’s Boston Celtics in the 1987 NBA Finals, and Magic Johnson recently revealed the key to that victory.
The NBA experienced a major revival in the 1980s, driven by the emergence of two iconic superstars whose rivalry defined the era: Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. With them, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics dominated the league and collected multiple championships throughout the decade. One of their most memorable clashes came in the 1987 Finals—where the Lakers had a secret weapon.

In a recent interview on the Legends of Sport podcast, Johnson praised Michael Cooper. “To me, the greatest defender,” the Hall of Famer began, referring to his former teammate’s abilities. “But also a guy who hit six threes in the NBA Finals. He set the record. Coop could shoot.”

Earvin then recalled that matchup against the Celtics and the impact Cooper had on Pat Riley’s squad. “That ’87 run, he helped us win the whole playoff series. He probably hit three or four threes every single game,” he said. “And being the point guard so, he had to bring the ball up and still be a great defender once we got on defense. He could do it all.”

In that Finals series against Boston, the Lakers won in six games, powered by an exceptional performance from Magic Johnson, who led the team in scoring in three games and in assists in all six. His effort earned him the Finals MVP award—his third, after previously winning in 1980 and 1982.

Michael Cooper playing for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 1988-89 season

Still, the legendary guard made a point to emphasize Michael Cooper’s contribution. The then-31-year-old guard averaged 12 points, 2.3 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.6 steals across the series. His standout moment came in Game 2, when he hit six three-pointers to help lead the Lakers to a 141–122 win.

Performances like that cemented Cooper’s legacy in the NBA.
In a 2019 interview, Michael was asked whether he could thrive in today’s era of basketball—and how he imagines his career might look now. “I’d almost be a billionaire,” he joked, according to Basketball Network. “I can play great defense and shoot it a little bit, which is how you get paid now.
Larry Bird was one of the greatest players of all time, but NBA icons Byron Scott and Gary Payton also highlighted another side of the Boston Celtics legend.
Few players in basketball history had the kind of impact Larry Bird made during the 1980s in the NBA. Analysts often remember the Boston Celtics legend as one of the driving forces behind the league’s evolution during that era, especially because of his rivalry with Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson. However, Gary Payton and Byron Scott pointed out a different trait of the former forward.

“He was just the biggest trash talker that I’ve ever seen,” said Scott in a January 2025 interview on All The Smoke. “Larry would talk (expletive) during the game. He tell you where he’s going, catch it, shot it. Jump, he tell you, ‘Man, your jump high, but you don’t jump that high.’”

But Scott emphasized that Bird didn’t just talk—he backed it up. “I guess it ain’t trash talking if you ain’t backing it up right. I’m saying he telling you what he going to do and he’s doing it. So, I guess it’s just him being a prophet and telling you exactly what he was going to do,” the former guard joked.

Byron also recalled some of the things the Boston legend used to say on the court to opponents: “’You better put a black guy on me,’ all that (expletive) is true, because he was like, ‘You disrespect me putting a white guy on me. Ain’t no white guy can guard me. You better put a brother on me.’ That’s how he was. And then they couldn’t do nothing with him.”

Three-time NBA champion with the Lakers Byron Scott.

Still, among Lakers players, there was one who found a way to make things tough for Bird: Michael Cooper. “He said the only one that could was Coop,” Scott revealed. “He said Coop was the only one that could really guard him. He called him the best defensive player he’s ever seen.”

Byron Scott on Larry Bird’s talent

Scott had the chance to face Bird many times during those classic matchups between the Celtics and the Lakers. In fact, between entering the NBA in 1983 and leaving Los Angeles in 1993, Byron played in three Finals against Boston, winning two and losing one. That gave him firsthand insight into Bird’s greatness.

“I don’t think we give him enough credit for how great he was. Larry Bird was the real (expletive),” Byron said. “Larry Bird was one of the greatest players I’ve ever seen. He gotta be a top 10. He’s overlooked, just like anything else. Time has a way to make people forget about the past.”

Gary Payton also praises Bird

Another NBA icon who faced Bird was Gary Payton, early in his career with the Seattle SuperSonics while Larry was nearing retirement. “He was the coldest dude I’ve ever seen,” Payton said during a 2022 appearance on Uninterrupted. “Everybody be talking about this great greats and we always mentioning him. He was the (expletive). He’ll give it to you any way he wanted to. Larry Bird was cold.”

Gary also shared specific examples of what the Celtics legend would say to opponents during games: “Bird used to tell me, ‘Look here man, I’m gonna shoot this (expletive) jumper in your face right there in that corner and it’s gonna be your Christmas present. I’m gonna wrap it and bust your head open.’ All that (expletive).”

Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird epitomized fearlessness on the court, consistently showcasing his extraordinary talent against any opponent. According to a former teammate, Bird's skills might not be enhanced by modern training techniques.
Larry Bird remains an iconic figure in NBA history, particularly celebrated for his stellar performance with the Boston Celtics during the 1980s and 1990s. Bird’s career with the Celtics was marked by immense success as the team clinched three championships in the 1980s. Alongside Hall of Fame teammates like Kevin McHale, Bird helped forge a dynasty that was nearly unbeatable in its era.

While the NBA of that era boasted numerous remarkable talents, Bird consistently stood above the rest, even after the arrival of Michael Jordan. Many of Bird’s contemporaries have acknowledged his unrivaled competitive spirit and technical prowess on the court, attributes that defined his legendary status.

Reflecting on Bird’s legacy, his former teammate Kevin McHale spoke to Yahoo Sports eight years ago about the evolution of training techniques in basketball. McHale observed that while modern advancements in equipment and technology allow for detailed performance analysis and physical improvements, Bird’s success in the 1980s was driven by other factors.

“We had such a demanding schedule. Today’s schedule is much different. We had a trainer, just one trainer, and that’s all we had. Now, they have five strength coaches and all this stuff. All of that would’ve helped,” McHale noted.

May 17, 1986: Boston's Bill Walton with the over-the-shoulder pass to Larry Bird in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Bird had 19 PTS/16 REB/13 AST, Kevin McHale had 29 PTS/11 REB and Robert Parish had 28 PTS/12 REB in the Celtics' 111-107 win over the Bucks in Milwaukee. pic.twitter.com/r9wpbEKgTu
— NBA Cobwebs (@NBACobwebs) May 17, 2025

However, McHale continued: “But it wouldn’t help in the area Larry was superior in, basketball IQ. They prep you better to have a longer career, but it won’t make you tougher, that’s for sure. Lifting weights makes you better at lifting weights. Larry played with a mental and physical toughness that set him apart.”

Bird’s insights on the role of intelligence in basketball

Celtics legend, aligning with McHale’s remarks, shared his perspective on what it takes to excel in basketball. Interestingly, Bird emphasized attributes beyond physical prowess, highlighting the critical role of cognitive acumen and strategic understanding in the sport.

“You can have all the speed in the world, all the quickness, and be able to jump out of the gym, but I think the one thing you have to have is the desire to make yourself better every day,” Bird noted.

Bird candidly reflected on his own career, stating: “I wasn’t able to run fast or jump high, so I had to come up with another gimmick to get me through. The ability to learn quickly, master the fundamentals, and compensate for my lack of speed or jumping ability made all the difference.“

Bird’s intellectual impact on the Celtics’ dynasty

Bird’s integral role in the Celtics’ success in the 1980s continues to be a remarkable illustration of the power of basketball intelligence. His insights into the game, despite any physical limitations, underscore his extraordinary influence on the court.

Examining Larry Bird’s impact with the Celtics:

Immediate turnaround: Before Bird’s arrival in the 1979-80 season, the Celtics posted a dismal 29-53 record. His presence contributed to a dramatic 32-win improvement, culminating in a 61-21 record, marking what was then the largest single-season turnaround in NBA history.

The “Big Three”: Bird’s arrival coincided with Red Auerbach’s strategic acquisitions of Kevin McHale and Robert Parish, forming a legendary frontcourt that became the cornerstone of the Celtics’ 1980s dynasty.

Career averages: Over his 897 regular-season games, Bird averaged 24.3 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game, demonstrating his versatile skill set.

Five NBA finals appearances: During his illustrious 13-year career, Bird led the Celtics to five NBA Finals appearances, securing three championships and affirming their dominance.

Basketball IQ: Revered for his basketball intelligence, Bird consistently demonstrated an uncanny ability to anticipate plays, execute instinctive passes, and read the game with unparalleled precision.

Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird revealed the toughest defender he ever faced during his NBA career.
Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird opened up about some of the most intense matchups of his illustrious career, sharing rare insight into the physical and mental toll of going head-to-head with elite defenders during the NBA’s golden era. Known for his fearless confidence and ability to deliver in the clutch, Bird revealed who he considers the toughest defender he ever faced—but stopped just short of naming names, teasing that the answer might surprise those familiar with his legendary on-court rivalries.

Reflecting on his playing days, the Boston Celtics icon emphasized the importance of continually refining his game. Bird said he made a habit of adding new tools to his arsenal each season—whether it was a new shooting angle, post move, or off-hand finish. One opponent in particular forced him to stay sharp: Los Angeles Lakers swingman Michael Cooper.

“You always have to add something to your game,” Bird said it at a press conference in 1992. “Hooks, runners, lefty shots around the hoop. I used to work on those because of Michael Cooper. He was the only guy in the league who could guard me, and I had to be ready for him in the Finals.”

Bird has never been shy about giving Cooper his due, and he made clear that their battles left a lasting impression. He candidly admitted that Cooper stood above the rest when it came to defensive prowess—and he doesn’t expect that to change in his personal memory of the game.

1988-1989: Michael Cooper of the Los Angeles Lakers moves the ball during a game

“The best ever defensive player to guard me was Michael Cooper,” Bird said. “I’ll take that to the grave with me. He was a very intelligent defensive player—he’s very focused—and it was great to play against him. At that time, I was playing some of my best basketball, and he was still able to guard me pretty well.”

The Bird vs Cooper rivalry defined an era

The rivalry between Bird and Cooper stood out as one of the most compelling individual matchups of the 1980s, perfectly capturing the essence of the storied Celtics-Lakers feud. Bird, Boston’s sharpshooting maestro, and Cooper, L.A.’s defensive anchor, clashed repeatedly on the NBA’s biggest stage—most memorably in the Finals. Their faceoffs were chess matches marked by high IQ plays, physicality, and relentless determination.

Cooper, a five-time NBA All-Defensive First Team selection and the 1987 Defensive Player of the Year, was widely recognized as one of the few defenders capable of slowing Bird down—at least to some degree. His length, quickness, and boundless energy presented constant challenges for the Celtics star.

A clash of styles and mentalities

What made their duels so captivating was the stark contrast in style. Bird relied on deception, footwork, and flawless shooting mechanics. Cooper, on the other hand, thrived on anticipation, elite lateral movement, and dogged persistence. When the Celtics and Lakers met, Cooper was often assigned to Bird for nearly every possession—an assignment he embraced fully, no matter the venue or stakes.

Yet, beneath the fierce competition lay a deep mutual respect. Bird never wilted under Cooper’s defensive pressure, and Cooper never flinched in the face of Bird’s legendary trash talk and clutch heroics. Their battles not only elevated the stakes of the Celtics-Lakers rivalry—they elevated the game itself, setting a standard for individual excellence that still resonates through NBA history.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar marked his legacy as one of the NBA’s greatest. He won a record six MVPs with the Los Angeles Lakers. Moreover, in a past interview, he revealed the toughest player he ever faced.
The Los Angeles Lakers have featured some of the greatest players in NBA history. One of them is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. His impact on the league was undeniable, as he set the all-time scoring record that stood for 39 years, until LeBron surpassed him. He also won a record six MVP awards, more than any other player in history. Throughout his career, Kareem faced many legendary opponents, but his pick for the toughest one might come as a surprise.

“The best guy I played against might have been Larry Bird…People don’t appreciate Larry Bird enough. They think he was a chubby White guy. But he would wear us down. The muscle that was between his ears was the best because he made three points, assisted, rebounded and had steals. He was always in the right place at the right time. He is, without a doubt, one of the best players I’ve ever played against,” stated Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as reported by The Washington Times on 2022.

Despite Larry is a well-known legend within Boston Celtics, his name is not usually picked among the greatest of all time debate. During his 897 games, he averaged 24.3 points contributing with 10 rebounds and 6.3 assists. Also, he was on the MVP debates for along 9 straight years showcasing his talent winning the award 3 times. Besides, he led the franchise to three championships-1981, 1984 and 1986.

Even Hall of Famer James Worthy admitted he preferred guarding Michael Jordan over Larry Bird. The Celtics legend approached the game like a strategist. Bird constantly analyzed plays and anticipated moves before they happened. He did not lack physical capacity, but his edge came from his basketball IQ that made him a nightmare to defend.

Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics shoots the ball as Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers watches.

Larry Bird opens up about his departure from the Boston Celtics front office

After retiring in 1992, Larry Bird returned to the Boston Celtics as a special assistant to CEO Dave Gavitt. His arrival sparked excitement in Boston, where fans still viewed him as an icon. Bird’s return became one of the most anticipated moves in the city’s sports scene.

However, the situation began to shift during the 1995–96 season. The team’s decision to trade Sherman Douglas raised concerns. Many questioned Bird’s role and future with the franchise after that move.

Bird later opened up about the turning point in his relationship with the team. “I knew my days with the Celtics were over when I told our owner that Sherman Douglas was the most valuable guy on our team, and then he traded him a month later…(They) would ask my advice about certain personnel moves, then turn around and do whatever they wanted,” confessed Larry Bird as reported by Basketball Network.

Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic joined an exclusive club with NBA legend Larry Bird after finishing second in this season's MVP voting.
The NBA announced Shai Gilgeous–Alexander as the 2025 regular-season MVP, securing the top spot in the voting. Nikola Jokic came in second, with Giannis Antetokounmpo rounding out the top three. Despite the runner-up finish, the Serbian superstar made history, joining Celtics legend Larry Bird in an exclusive statistical feat.

According to StatMuse, Jokic is now one of just two players in NBA history to finish top two in MVP voting for five consecutive seasons, a distinction he shares with Bird.

Jokic won his first MVP in 2021, repeated the achievement in 2022, and finished second behind Joel Embiid in 2023. He secured his third MVP last season before landing in second place again this year, solidifying his spot alongside Bird in the record books.

Bird remains the only player in NBA history to finish in the top two for six straight years. The Celtics legend was the runner-up in 1981, 1982, and 1983, before claiming MVP honors in three consecutive seasons: 1984, 1985, and 1986.

Seasons of Jokic and Gilgeous-Alexander

This year’s MVP race was one of the most competitive in recent memory, thanks to exceptional seasons from both Jokic and Gilgeous-Alexander. The Serbian star delivered arguably the best season of his career, averaging 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, 10.2 assists, and 1.8 steals per game.

Meanwhile, Gilgeous-Alexander led the league with 32.7 points per game, shooting an impressive 51.9% from the field. He also averaged 6.4 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game.

The Canadian guard spearheaded a historic campaign for the Oklahoma City Thunder, who set an NBA record with a +12.9 point differential per game and finished with 18 more wins than the Nuggets.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s historic season places him in rare company. The only player to average at least 30 points, 50% shooting from the field, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1 block per game in a single season is Michael Jordan, who accomplished the feat in 1987-88 and 1990-91—both MVP-winning campaigns.
