In an interview with NBA insider Marc Stein, Markkanen acknowledged the rumors but took a positive outlook on the situation. “I think [it means] you’ve done things right — that teams want you,” Markkanen told Stein. “I was able to kind of zone it out and really wait for my agent for what’s real.”

This wasn’t Markkanen’s first brush with trade rumors, having previously dealt with similar situations. “I went through it once already during my restricted free agency [summer], going from Chicago to Cleveland, so this was easier for sure,” he explained.

He added, “Contract-wise, we couldn’t do anything before August. I knew that, if something happens with [trade interest], my agent will let me know. So I was able to kind of be home with my family and work out, and it was easier.”

Warriors’ offseason moves

After Klay Thompson’s departure to Dallas, the Warriors made several key acquisitions, including De’Anthony Melton, Buddy Hield, Lindy Waters III, and Kyle Anderson.

These additions are expected to enhance the Warriors’ depth and offensive firepower, though the team will need to focus on building chemistry and optimizing these talents on the court.

Steve Kerr confident in Wiggins filling Thompson’s role

Despite the loss of a franchise icon like Thompson, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr remains optimistic about Andrew Wiggins stepping into an expanded role. Kerr expressed confidence in Wiggins’ ability to increase his 3-point shooting.

“I’ve already told him: six 3-pointers a game,” Kerr told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Kerith Burke. “He’s a really good 3-point shooter. His numbers dipped a little last year, but since he’s been here, it’s been 39, 40 percent.”

Kerr also highlighted the importance of Wiggins becoming the team’s second-leading scorer behind Stephen Curry. “And let’s face it, with Klay gone, we need him to step up and be our second scorer after Steph, and we know he’s perfectly capable of that.”

The disappointing tenth place finish by the Golden State Warriors last season was undoubtedly a tough blow for the Californian organization, which will now look to rebound and return to the top of the standings.

A key to returning to their former glory is strengthening a roster that currently has few stars and young talent that has yet to firmly establish itself in the NBA spotlight.

The Warriors’ management had several players on their radar to reinforce the roster this offseason, with one particular target they were keen to pursue. However, it has recently been revealed that this player will not be joining the Bay Area, as he has signed a lucrative contract extension with his current team.

The player in question is none other than Lauri Markkanen. The Finnish star has agreed to a lucrative contract extension and will remain with the Utah Jazz for a few more years. As a result, Golden State will have to look elsewhere for their top reinforcement option. Curry, however, has made it clear to the Warriors’ front office he doesn’t want to have the final say on roster decisions.

Markkanen and a lucrative renewal with the Jazz

Lauri Markkanen was undoubtedly one of the most sought-after players in the NBA this offseason. His standout performances recently suggested that a departure from Salt Lake City was a very real possibility.

However, to the surprise of many, the Finnish player decided to re-sign with the Jazz and will stay in Utah for at least five more years. Markkanen will earn an additional $24 million on top of the $18 million he was set to make during the 2024-25 season, and he has signed a 4-year, $196 million extension.

In total, Markkanen will earn $238 million over the next five seasons, including $220 million in new money from his negotiations with the Jazz this offseason. Additionally, he cannot be traded during the 2024-25 season, as he signed this new deal on August 7, and the NBA trade deadline for that season is February 6.

Markkanen and his feelings about the renewal

Regarding the renewal, the Finnish player spoke with ESPN over the phone and stated: “They’ve all showed their belief in me, from the ownership to the front office to Will. It’s a comfortable environment and those guys’ resumes speak for themselves. I trust in the organization to help grow me as a person and a player, to build our team and I’m ready to take on the challenge.”

The league even sent a memo about a potential Lillard trade to South Beach. The Heat will need to one-up their offer for the multi-time All-Star, but it seems unlikely at this point.

Markkanen is an out-there target. The Jazz haven’t given any inclination they’d move him. That tracks. He is only 26, just earned an All-Star selection and has two years left on his deal at the bargain rate of $35.3 million.

There is still value in exploring sell-high scenarios. Utah is building for years down the line, not just the next two or three. (…) He can fill the frontcourt spot next to Bam Adebayo or absorb minutes at the 3, and his offense is a unique hybrid of one part self-sustaining, two parts play-finishing around his surroundings.

Three firsts is a huge price to pay, but Markkanen’s worth it. The Heat are also keeping Tyler Herro and getting out of Robinson’s deal (three years, $57.5 million)—which doesn’t look so bad this side of the 2023 playoffs but is also miles from asset territory.”

Of course, this is just an idea, and it doesn’t mean this is going to happen. Then again, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to think that the Heat could eventually move on from the Lillard saga and explore different avenues to bolster their roster.
